Mine waste and mine reclamation are topics of major interest to the mining industry, the government and the general public. This publication and its companion volume are the proceedings of a conference held in Pittsburgh, April 19-21, 1988. There were nine sessions (50 papers) that dealt with the geochemistry, hydrology and problems of mine waste and mine water, especially acid mine drainage. These comprise Volume 1. The nine sessions (43 papers) that dealt with reclamation and restoration of disturbed lands, as well as related policy issues, are included in volume 2. Volume 2 also contains the ten papers that pertained to control of subsidence and mine fires at abandoned mines. Poster session presentations are, in general, represented by abstracts; these have been placed in the back of both volumes.

This is not a conventional professional paper. It deals mostly with personal experiences. These concern a background in applied mineralogy. Your committee asked me to do this. I accepted with a California enthusiasm which has since diminished with the approach of a Chicago winter. Nevertheless, I wish to thank your committee and also to apologize in advance for omissions and inadequate statements, as such a paper must possess. My introduction to applied mineralogy took place in 1922 at Stanford University. Physicists had recently demonstrated that crystalline powders would reflect x-rays in a systematic manner. Professor A.F. Rogers sug¬gested that significant x-ray reflections might be obtained from powdered opaque minerals. With the aid of Professor D.L. Webster in the Physics Department, I constructed an x-ray diffraction outfit. It was a crude affair, but it worked. Starting with 1924, we secured recognizable patterns of a goodly number of ore minerals (1,2,3). Today x-ray diffraction outfits are common, and a card system of mineral identification is constantly used.

SABC circuits have gained widespread attention within China, and are being gradually applied to many mines. However, the domestic knowledge of comminution process is still relatively basic, and the design and production management of the application of SABC technology lack guidance of scientific theories. This research project focuses on the Phase I SABC milling circuits of Wu Shan Porphyry copper mine. Targeting the design and operation problems of existing process and circuit, and without increased investment and alterations in equipment, the new technologies will combine ordinary crushing and grinding theories as theoretical guidance, and borrow JK Simulation Software (JKSimMet) for analysis in order to optimize the comminution process, efficiently allocate production output and energy consumption, eventually resulting in increased production and energy efficiency. Using JKSimMet Simulation Software, and combining theoretical optimizing and practical production techniques, as well as the on-site situation, the eventual SABC comminution process and circuit optimization plan is: increasing the grinding Ball charge from 8% to 10% v/v in the SAG mill; Setting the Ball charge in the Ball mill to 27% v/v and the maximum operating power draw to 5 800kW; replacing the HP Series crusher with a TRIO TC84 crusher, which is without a power controller, and adding a pebble bin. The final optimization result is: Maximum system processing capacity increased between 20%-26.7%, specific energy consumption reduced by more 2.0 kWh/t, creating an economic benefit of over 300 million RMB, thus achieving the goal of increased production, reduced energy consumption, and improved profitability.

THE following paragraphs comprise such information as the Secretary has been able to obtain concerning the members and associates whose deaths have been reported. Further particulars or corrections of errors, and biographical data concerning deceased members or associates not already noticed in this way, are solicited. Charles IV. Benton was born at Kezar Falls, Maine, Nov. 12, 1843. We have no accurate knowledge concerning the early part of his career. In 1871 he engaged with the N. Y. Honduras Rosario Mining Co., at San Juancinto, Honduras, C. A., and later was employed at the Monserrat mine at Yuscaran, and at Santa Lucia, Honduras, with the Tenero Mining Milling Co. of Pennsylvania. In 1897 he became a member of the Institute. At the time he was stricken with his last sickness he was employed at the Paymaster mine at Tucson, Ariz. He died at Fairmount, Denver, Colo., Sept. 9, 1907. William R. Boggs, Jr.-The notice in the Bulletin for January was incorrect in saying that the murder of Mr. Boggs occurred while he was employed as metallurgical. manager by Mr. W. B. A. Dingwall, at La Maroma, San Luis Potosi, Mex. Mr. Dingwall writes that in March, 1907, Mr. Boggs left him, to return to his home at Winston, N. C., whence he. subsequently went to Durango, Mex., to take, with the Topia Mining Co., a position which he occupied at the tine of his death, Nov. 17, 1907. Mr. Dingwall says that, while in his service, Mr. Boggs never had any trouble with the workmen, but was esteemed and liked by them, as by all who knew him ; and adds, injustice to the State of San Luis Potosi, that the population, even in the mining-camps of that State, is orderly and law-abiding, and that the authorities are vigilant and just. The Clogau St DavidÆs gold mine has a recorded production of around 81 000 oz Au and it is the largest mine in the Dolgellau gold-belt and BritainÆs most prolific historical producer. The original mine was first worked for copper, however; in 1854, gold was found in waste material from the St DavidÆs section. In recent times the mine has operated intermittently between 1983 - 2007. The principal black shale-hosted gold-bearing reef (Main Reef) can be traced for about 3 km, striking approximately NE-SW and dipping steeply between 60¦ - 90¦ SE. The reef system pinches and swells, changes strike and splits into a number of smaller branches. Reef width is variable, ranging from over 6 m to a few cm and in places reducing to small irregular blobs. The reef is internally complex and composed of swarms of narrow (1 - 300 mm) subparallel veins separated by country rock sheets. The gold-bearing veins within the reef package are discontinuous; though generally possess bonanza grades running 10s - 100s oz/t Au. It has historically been shown that some gold-rich vein segments can grade up to 300 oz/t Au. The predictability of the gold-rich segments is poor, but has been shown to be related to presence of the Clogau (black shale) Formation, and/or the mechanical interactions of the reef with greenstone sills, reef branching and splitting and/or cross-fractures to form ore shoots. The second part of the paper, presented at the Midland Institute of Mining, Civil and Mechanical Engineers' general meeting held in Doncaster on 27th May 1916, addresses the post-Carboniferous and pre-Permian movements which brought about the partition of the area and gave to the North Midland district its individuality as a separate coalfield. As earth-movements of several ages subsequent to the Carboniferous have played a part in the formation of this particular coalfield, the aim is to elucidate the effects which belong to the post-Carboniferous and pre-Permian Period and to disentangle them from those of later date. This is done by comparing the geometry of the folded surface of one of the more important horizons in the Coal-Measures with that of the surface of unconformity which divides the Permian from the Carboniferous rocks in South Yorkshire, Derbyshire, and Nottinghamshire

Simulation continues to hold the spotlight among the Operations Research applications in the operational side of mining. One reason for this is the need to solve the many waiting line and storage problems common to the industry. A second reason for using simulation is the central requirement of retrospect testing. Acceptance of a model by management is more likely to depend on its tested performance rather than on the underlying validity aspects of the model itself. Mathematics have not been and may not be developed that will allow all desired system elements to be considered simultaneously. It is in this realm that simulation bridges the gap between theory and useful design procedures. One of the earliest published accounts of simulation at work in the coal industry is demonstrated by the application cf Monte Carlo methods to explore changes in future operating policies for an existing track system (Manula, 1963). By modifying certain control parameters, revision in design changes were evaluated in the computer rather than in the actual production section. A second application which has found wide use in practice is the VFI-OCR Face Simulator (Prelaz et al., 1968). The model developed here has the purpose of allowing the comparison of methods for room-and-pillar face operations end observing their effect on mining prior to actual installation. Proposed changes are tried in the model and the best of these are selected as a guide for better mire management: IBM's own simulation package, the System 360 General Purpose Simulator, has experienced heavy use in solving similar problems and other steady-state situations.

This presentation reports survey findings that aim to modernize the definition and understanding of the term 'mining.' The survey, conducted via LinkedIn in Winter 2024, garnered responses from a diverse group of individuals, including current or former employees of mining or exploration companies, mining consulting firms, service providers, supplier firms, as well as students and retirees with industry experience. The data, ethically approved by the University of Saskatchewan, offers valuable insights into satisfaction levels within the mining sector and suggests an expansion of the identifying characteristics of definitions of mining. This marks the third CIM gaining insights paper by Beneteau, Espley, and Nyabeze, following previous works on 'Career Satisfaction for Women in Mining' (2010) and 'Mentorship Initiatives in the Canadian Mining Industry' (2018*)."

During 1995, the estimated consumption of lithium minerals in the western world was 139 kt (153,000 st).This amounted to 18 kt (20,000 st) of lithium carbonate equivalent (LCE). Overall tonnage demand for lithium minerals increased by 10.8 kt (11,900 st) during 1995from 1994. From 1992 to 1995, overall tonnage demand has increased 62%, from 85.5 to 139 kt (94,240 st). There are four major producers of lithium minerals. Gwalia Consolidated in Western Australia is the largest producer of spodumene. It supplies high-grade spodumene concentrate, fine-spodumene concentrate, glass-grade spodumene and chemical-grade spodumene.Tantalum Mining (Tanco) of Manitoba, Canada, produces high-grade spodumene concentrate, fine-spodumene, concentrate and montebrasite. Bikita Minerals in Zimbabwe is the largest manufacturer of petalite. It supplies high-grade and container-glass petalite.

TO certain people the name of Northern Rhodesia brings only a vague recollection of a distant country somewhere in Africa; to others, it means a big game territory and the opportunity for excellent shooting; to some, a land of sunshine and peace; but to mining men the name signifies the land where the latest discoveries of copper ore are astonishing the mining world and bid fair, in a few years, to make Northern Rhodesia one of the largest copper- producing countries. There is a fascination about this part of the globe that is somewhat similar to southern California, and at the same time there is that feeling of mystery peculiar to a tropical climate. Perhaps it is the isolation, the fear of wild animals, or the influence of an undefinable something which cannot be expressed.

L'approche analytique choisie doit tenir compte de plusieurs facteurs, les plus importants étant: le type de materiel analysé, sa representativite, la sensibitite de la methode et les cotits reliés à son utilisation. Dans cette optique, plusieurs démarches ana/ytiquessont possibles, toutes requérant une étape de préconcentration. L 'une des plus adéquate consiste à effectuer une préconcentration par fusion plombeuse suivie d'une analyse par émission au plasma, cette procédure permettant de mesurer Ie platine, la palladium et Ie rhodium à des couts compétitifs (15 $/échantillon). Advenant 10 presence de teneurs appréciables de l'un ou plusieurs de ces éléments, une préconcentration par fusion au sulfure de nickel suivie d 'une analyse par activation neutronique assure alors la mesure de tous les EGP ainsi que celie de l’or (90 $/échantillon). Il est important de noter que Ie nickel, ades teneurs superieures à 4%, interfère au cours de l'étape de préconcentration par fusion plombeuse, ce qui se traduit pas sous-dosage des concentrations en platine, effectivement presentes dans l'échantillon. Ainsi, les géologues à la recherche d'EPG dans des environnements géologiques riches en nickel devraient s'assurer que l'analyse utilise, au cours de l'étape de préconcentration, une fusion au sulfure de nickel.

The paper shares programs that presently use the CDC PLATO System to train individuals in industry. A short history of PLATO development; as a training system is presented with reflection on the major training trends being used to improve training effectiveness. A discussion is offered to describe the benefits of using a system for individualizing instruction. An introduction; is offered showing how one can recognize' individual differences, with an explanation of how the strengths of a computer are used to deliver and manage the training. Simulations of hazardous processes are shown to be one of the most effective uses of the computer for training.

AFTER all the chronology that has been given, what is the present status of chromium steels? For the purpose of this discussion the different types of chromium steels can be divided into three classifications-those containing relatively low , percentages of chromium, say 5 per cent or less; the medium-chromium steels containing up to about 18 or 19 per cent chromium; and the steels containing still higher percentages of chromium, and some of the special alloys. Chromium has some unique effects in steel, so it is well to make a few generalizations. The affinity of chromium for carbon is great and the metal is unique in the manger in which it supplements and enhances the effects of carbon. Chromium retards -considerably the thermal transformations on cooling and exerts an opposing influence both on the absorption and precipitation of the carbides in steel. These statements make it easy to understand the fact that chromium .steels are capable of producing a hardened product at a much slower rate of cooling than is, true of plain carbon steel, and that chromium carbide or -the mixed carbides of iron and chromium do not contribute to brittleness to as great a degree as does iron carbide.

The objective of Quality Assurance and Quality Control programs on advanced exploration projects is to ensure that data from sampling, assaying, and recording of geological observations are of high integrity for the purpose of obtaining reliable mineral resource and reserve estimates. National Instrument 43-101 Standards of Disclosure for Mineral Projects states that all scientific and technical reports must be prepared and certified by a Qualified Person in accordance with professional and industry standards following Mineral Exploration Best Practices Guidelines and Definitions, and Guidelines of the CIM Standards on Mineral Resources and Reserves. Additional information is given in Companion Policy 43-101CP and Technical Report Form 43-101F1. Although the Qualified Person must discuss and describe the Sampling Method and Approach; Sample Preparation, Analyses, and Security; and Data Verification; there is little specific information in the guidelines on Quality Assurance and Quality Control programs. Examples from the Oyu Tolgoi Cu-Au Project are given for optimizing sampling protocols, following proper sample preparation procedures, safeguarding sample shipments through chain of custody, ensuring quality of assaying with Round Robin monitoring programs, verifying transcribed data, and validating data with check assays to ensure high integrity for resource and reserve estimation. Oyu Tolgoi, also known as Turquoise Hill, is in the South Gobi desert, Mongolia, about 550 km south of the capital city of Ulaanbaatar, and 875 km northwest of Beijing, China. The project covers a major copper-gold system, which consists of the South West, South, Central, and Far North deposits, comprising high sulphidation and porphyry mineralization with oxide, supergene, and hypogene ore types. Exploration is done by multiple diamond drill rigs, and samples are prepared on-site and shipped to laboratories in Mongolia, Canada, and Australia for further preparation and analysis.

The single six-in-line furnace of the Polokwane Smelter is the largest installed high-intensity furnace for platinum group metals (PGM) base metals sulphide smelting in the world. The furnace employs state-of-the art technology to deliver a planned throughput of 650 000 t/a dry concentrate at a design 68 MW power input. A dynamic gas-mixing system assembled by the Bureau of Mines for the generation of precise gas mixtures from sources of concentrated or pure gases and diluent gases is described. A set of electronic mass flow controllers with maximum flows ranging from 10 to 5,000 ml/min, a so-called Pure Air Generator, and gases in cylinders are used to generate differing gas concentrations. The repeatability of the delivery rate of a flow controller, measured on different days, has a precision of 0.3 pct of the setting. This dynamic gas-mixing system reduces the cylinder inventory and the demurrage charges for special gas mixtures. Gas mixtures that cannot be shipped commercially, such as flammable mixtures of methane in air, can be conveniently prepared by this system. The maximum dilution ratio is 2.5 x 104. Thus, gas mixtures can be made over a wide range of concentrations, from the percent region (by dilution of a pure single-component gas) to fractional parts per million (by dilution of a premixed standard, e.g., a 1,000-ppm mixture). This system is especially useful in determining the response of gas detection devices over the entire range of their measurement. Because the controllers are voltage controlled they lend themselves easily to automated control using computer-based systems.
