Resin bolt performance is dependent on the size of the resin annulus, the difference between the hole and bolt radii. The vast majority of the millions of resin roof bolts installed each year in the United States employ an annulus of 0.125 or 0.188 inches. Short encapsulation pull tests with resin annuluses of 0.125 and 0.095 inch resisted an average of 2.25tons per grouted inch, with no significant variation. Resin loses to simulated fractures increased as annulus size decreased, with a minimum loss of35% and a maximum loss of 60% associated with0.188 and 0.095 inch annuluses, respectively.

A portable, stand-alone instrument especially designed for recording strong ground motion was used in this study to create a large database of peak particle velocities measured underground. A total number of 39 sites located in stopes mining Carbon Leader and Ventersdorp Contact Reefs were investigated. Peak particle velocities whith values up to 3 m/s were recorded at some sites. The data recorded on the skin of the excavations were compared to the data recorded by the mine seismic networks to determine the site response. The maximum site response was obtained for source radii of between 5 m and 30 m and events locating within 200 m of the site. The extreme values of peak particle velocities were obtained in cases were the face-area lay within the source radius. Un instrument portable unique spécifiquement conçu pour enregistrer les mouvements dynamiques des terrains, a été utilisé dans cette étude pour créer une base de données importante sur la vélocité maximum des particules, mesurée en souterrain. Un nombre total de 39 sites situés dans les excavations exploitant les récifs appelés ‘Carbon Leader et Ventersdorp Contact Reefs’, a été investigué. Une vélocité maximale avec des valeurs allant jusqu’ à 3 m/s a été enregistrée sur certains sites. Les données enregistrées sur le bord de l’excavation ont été comparées aux données enregistrées par les réseaux séismiques de la mine pour déterminer la réponse du site. La réponse maximum du site a été obtenue pour des sources de rayons entre 5 m et 30 m et des évènements situés dans les 200 m du site. This is what I term ... the graveyard end of any Conference. It's almost over. Those of you remaining are either all talked out or past the information overload stage. And some of the sensible? ones have left for more exciting field trips, or gone back to their work-site where they earn their daily crust, or headed off South to another Conference of interest to the Energy sector that is being held currently in Christchurch. But that's OK. I have a thick skin! And neither am I particularly Politically Correct! I am not a miner: I am not involved in the mining industry in a hands on way at all. I am not even an academic. I am not even too sure why I am here ... apart from the fact that I agreed to come! At various times in my life I have been a D istrict Councillor, Chairman of a Regional Council and even an MP. I am a supporter of responsible mining.  All of what I have to say is my own point of view rather than that of either the Coal Producers' Federation or the mining industry. That is not to say that we are often in agreement, but I thought I would clear that point right at the outset. And some of what I will talk about will not strictly be to the topic - it's hardly mind-bending riveting stuff. Well, is it? But obviously because you are still here you have some interest in the topic.

INTRODUCTION The Sacramento Regional County Sanitation District (SRCSD) serves unincorporated areas of Sacramento County, parts of the cities of Sacramento and Folsom, and the cities of Citrus Heights, West Sacramento, Rancho Cordova, and Elk Grove. SRCSD maintains 145 kilometers (km) (90 miles) of interceptors that convey a combined total of 0.6 million meters3 per day (160 million gallons per day) or more of waste-water, with additional miles of sewer interceptors that are scheduled to be built by 2020. Wastewater is conveyed to the Sacramento Regional Wastewater Treatment Plant in the southwestern portion of the County, also managed and operated by SRCSD, in interceptors with diameters as large as 3.0 m (120 inches.) As part of its overall expansion program, SRCSD has constructed a number of major interceptors over the last few years with tunneling methods due to concerns associated with either the impacts of open cut construction in an urban environment (traffic, safety, noise, environmental concerns) or the need to achieve a crossing of a stream, river, or transportation corridor. This paper focuses on a specific issue that affected construction of the Upper Northwest Interceptor (UNWI) Sections 3&4 project, located at the northern limit of the SRCSD service boundary and within the limits of the City of Sacramento. This project involved the construction of 3.2 km (2 miles) of 2.1-meter (84-inch) and 2.4 km (1.5 miles) of 1.7-meter (66-inch) diameter reinforced concrete pipe (RCP) using MTBM, EPBM, and 3.3-meter (130-inch) two-pass TBM methods. The owner elected to install the RCP using tunneling for a number of reasons including a desire to avoid traffic impacts in a dense urban corridor, to minimize disturbance to the neighborhood, and to avoid potential dewatering-induced settlement issues along the western one-third of the project. For the western portion of the alignment the 2.1-meter (84-inch) reinforced concrete interceptor pipe was to be installed using a 2.7-meter (105-inch) earth pressure balance machine (EPBM). No external dewatering of shafts or tunnels was permitted for reasons of concern about settlement, discussed previously. At the intersection of Elkhorn Boulevard and Natomas Boulevard (at the extreme northwest corner of the project) the 2.7-meter (105-inch) EPBM tunneled past a recently constructed 11-million liter (3-million gallon) water storage reservoir, passing within 3 meters (10 feet) of the tank?s shallow foundation while tunneling through clean sands with a shallow groundwater table. The paper will discuss the implemented solution to mitigate additional settlement risk that was developed as a joint collaboration between the owner, CM, designer, and contractor.

The mining industry of Cameroon continued to be dominated by crude petroleum. Crude petroleum production has become the most important facet of Cameroon's economic development. Oil production was estimated to be 6.3 million tons in 1983 compared with 5.2 million tons in 1982 and 4.3 million tons in 1981. Over two-thirds of its export income was attributed to crude oil. The country's only refinery, dedicated in 1981, has a production capacity of 2 million tons. Cameroon has become self- sufficient in petroleum products since commissioning the refinery. The oil sector contributed approximately 13.5% to Cameroon's gross domestic product in 1982-83. Oil production was expected to rise from 125,000 barrels per day in 1983 to 156,000 barrels per day in 1985 when output peaks. Cameroon's ultimate recoverable reserves have been calculated at 100 million tons, or 750 million barrels of oil.

"INTRODUCTION During the period from September 18 to November 27, 1944, the Bureau of Mines conducted an investigation and exploratory churn-drilling program in an area immediately north of the Crow Branch Diggings, a district lying approximately 2 1/2 miles southwest of the town of Livingston in Grant County, Wisconsin.The work was undertaken as part of a general Bureau of Mines investigation of the zinc-producing area of southwestern Wisconsin at a time when all effort was being made to increase the production of metals important to the Nation's war prrgram.Although no mining has been done in the district in recent years the Crow Branch Diggings were an important source of galena and may be found today in the dumps remaining from old surface-mining operations.The Bureau of Mines undertook an exploratory churn-drilling program on the northwestern projection of the general strike of the digging in a zone where subsurface,lead and zinc mineralization had been reported from drilling done in the early 1900's."

On the basis of world production data alone, 1985 appears to have been a year in which the world's mineral industry took another step upward in its recovery from the very poor years of 1981, 1982, and early 1983. Despite a drop in the output of crude oil, which was the single most significant crude mineral product from the viewpoint of value, the estimated value of world crude mineral production advanced by 3.4% to about $1,054 billion constant 1983 dollars, with output increases logged for nearly two-thirds of the commodities and forms of commodities for which the U.S. Bureau of Mines calculates a total world output. However, the economic well-being of any industry or group of industries cannot be measured solely in terms of the volume and/or value of its production, and examination of statistics reflecting other aspects of mineral industry performance shows that 1985 was a less than ideal year in many respects. In the case of consumption of mineral commodities, although there were gains registered in diverse sectors such as iron and steel, aluminum, fertilizer materials, solid fuels, and gaseous fuels, there were also proportionally small but notable declines in use among the older major nonferrous metals (copper, lead, tin, and zinc) and in the all-important liquid fuels. In the case of international trade in mineral commodities, although comprehensive data for 1985 were not yet available, there were indications that the value may well have fallen below the estimated 1984 level of $632 billion, although the volume may have increased slightly. This, if true, would be chiefly the result of declining prices of mineral commodities, and indeed, price declines were noted for a number of significant materials in terms of current dollars, and even more would register declines if calculated on the basis of constant dollars, adjusting for inflation.

Many underground projects now include preparation of a Risk Register through planning and design as a tool for project and risk management. There is still significant discussion within the industry as to whether and how to best present the Risk Register through the bidding process and the construction phase of a project. While the ITIG Code of Practice for Risk Management of Tunnel Works recommends this approach of continuity in risk management procedures, it is silent on the specifics of how this should be achieved. Coal exploration has traditionally involved the acquisition of data to enable a resource to be quantified and qualified to the extent that its economic potential can be determined. This process commonly relied on: drilling to determine the depth and thickness of coal seams, broad characterisation of the overburden and interburden, and to provide cores for coal quality analyses; basic wireline logging to cross-check the depth and thickness of coal seams and provide some indication of rock mass strength; and basic surface geophysics and remote sensing to identify major geological structures. In recent years, the adoption of the JORC Code as a basis for the reporting of resources and reserves has placed a greater emphasis on the need for detailed, reproducible data sets that not only satisfy the traditional requirements of mine planners, but also satisfy the governance requirements of corporate and financial institutions. Similarly, the development of sophisticated numerical modelling techniques for use in both open cut and underground mine design, has seen a greater demand for precise geotechnical data, in situ stress characterisation and hydrological information as routine input to the design process. These requirements, coupled with the prevailing trend toward high capital, relatively inflexible mining techniques less tolerant of geological surprises, and the need for consideration of environmental issues such as groundwater impacts and surface subsidence, requires that modern exploration programs be multifaceted, and designed to commence capturing data relevant to ædownstream issuesÆ even during the initial phases of exploration planning.

Over the last few years, and especially the last few months, issues relating to Corporate Governance in industry in general, and the Minerals industry in particular, have become increasingly topical, as a result of a number of scandals and failures. The development of International and National Codes for the reporting of Mineral Resources and Reserves began some years ago, and has been followed by more stringent Listing Rules for the Securities Exchanges, as well as more standardised formats and protocols for financial reporting of assets and activities. More recently, some countries have adopted Codes for the Valuation of Mineral Properties, which have focussed on standardisation of valuation approaches to be adopted, and the qualifications of people deemed competent to sign off such valuations. This process has not been without criticism, the main criticism being the proliferation of local standards and regulations, which are often difficult to apply and regulate, or which are too prescriptive for multinational mining companies to deal with. In South Africa, these concerns have been recognised, while at the same time a need has been identified to establish a Code which could be applied to South Africa, and the African continent as a whole. Such a development would necessitate that the Code satisfies the needs of the continent, but in a global context. This global context has already been set by the activities of the International Organisation of Securities Commissions, the International Valuations Standards Committee and the International Accounting Standards Board. This paper explains the progress and process that has been established in South Africa for this purpose, and highlights the key issues which are open to public debate, so that the process is inclusive and transparent, whilst at the same time it is consistent with international time frames, and provides a deliverable product that meets the desired objectives.

Changes in the 1978 quantity and value of the sales of various natural abrasives, compared with the data for 1977, were of a mixed nature. Output of tripoli-type materials and garnet increased in both tonnage and value. Emery production also increased. But special silica stone product sales decreased in both tonnage and value, and the reported quantity and value of sales of manufactured abrasive material also decreased for 1978. In 1979 output of tripoli-type materials and special silica stone products decreased in both tonnage and value when compared with the previous year. The tonnage and value of sales of garnet and manufactured abrasives increased when compared to 1978 data.

Chemical grouting has been successfully used for over forty years to control the movement of groundwater in a wide variety of applications including tunnels, subway systems, sanitary sewers, mines and construction projects. This paper illustrates the versatility of chemical grouts by reviewing three projects where chemical grout was utilized to address some very difficult water control challenges. The featured product is acrylamide which can be used alone or in conjunction with other types of grout such as cementitious products. Acrylamide grout is injected as a two component product that will react and form an impermeable gel when the components combine. There are notable differences between the acrylamide based products and cementitious products. The most notable and significant difference is that acrylamide is a true solution grout that contains no particulates and has a viscosity of 1-2cps. This feature enables the acrylamide grout to penetrate very small geological features that other grouts could not penetrate and to seal small cracks and fissures where groundwater seepage is occurring. The product also has an adjustable gel set time from a few seconds to several hours which enables the operator to determine the product travel before it forms a gel. When properly applied the product has a half-life in the soil of 362 years (per testing by the US Department of Energy).

CHANGES in mining practices have evolved so quietly and unobtrusively that perhaps we scarcely appreciate how truly startling these changes are unless we cast our minds back so as to compare the past with the present. Such retrospection is, indeed, necessary when attempting to forecast the future, for it is only by carefully reviewing the past that we can hope to obtain an indication of what the future may hold in store. In this instance, it is not necessary to delve into the very early history of . coal mining, as our purpose will be served if the last three or four decades are reviewed, a period that is still fresh within the memory of many of us. These earlier days might be termed the selective period of mining, for at that time the coal resources of the world had not been tapped to anything like the extent they are at present and this condition enabled the owners and operators to exercise selective powers and only mine such seams of coal as could be most easily reached an worked at the lowest possible cost and which, at the same time, would suit the requirements of the market. Carrying this thought of selective mining still further, the miner, who was then an artisan skilled in all the branches of his calling, was able to select or discard such parts of the seam he was working that the co al sent out of the mine was acceptable to the consumer with just the barest minimum of preparation. Compare these conditions with the? conditions prevailing today, when coal seams of medium height, good quality, and readily accessible have been largely depleted and the operator has been compelled either to carry on his operations under much greater depths of cover where the coal is more costly to win, or else to work seams of lesser height or of poorer quality.

At Ok Tedi, ore type and SAG feed size distribution vary widely and frequently. This makes control of the SAG mills by application of the power/pressure relationship difficult. Power logic has traditionally been conservative due to power spikes associated with rapid size distribution changes. A new expert system was installed in early 2000. The system incorporates multiple state fuzzy logic to deal with frequent and radical ore type and size variations, along with monitoring of motor temperatures. A short term power spike no longer warrants immediate radical action. This has resulted in increased mill throughput and improved circuit stability.

Research on the development of new and improved methods for the discovery and production of oil and gas and production of fluid fuels from coal continued to be the major thrust of the Bureau of Mines energy research program during 1973. Crude oil recovery from tar sands and oil shale also retained a high priority in this work. Complementing this program were numerous studies aimed at accomplishing the objective of increased energy output with greater safety and minimum harm to the natural environment. This report summarizes research objectives and results and itemizes formal publications of the Bureau of Mines on energy and related subjects.

An exchange of coal mine specialists was made with the USSR under an "Agreement on Exchanges and Cooperation in Scientific, Technical, Cultural, and other Fields for 1972-73," which was signed by President Nixon and Chairman Breshnev on April 11, 1972.* This exchange, in the field of coal mine safety and scientific research in hazard control technologies, was one of 16 technical exchanges covered under the above agreement. A six-man USA delegation visited the Soviet Union from September 9 to September 21, 1973. The delegation visited four deep mines, three in the Donets Basin and one in the Moscow Basin, a State Safety Research Institute, a Mine Research Station and associated Research and Design Institute, two Research and Design mining equipment institutes, and a Trade Union-sponsored health sanitarium. In Moscow, the delegation received a briefing on the Soviet coal industry from First Deputy Minister Vladimir Fedanov. A similar briefing was given to us on the Donets coal basin by the Deputy Minister S. Saratikyanz of the Ukrainian Coal Ministry. Lengthy technical discussions were held with the mines staff and research personnel at the institutes we visited. In addition, we had detailed discussions with key staff members of two combinats "Donetskugol" and "Tulaugol." In all these meetings, principal topics were matters of safety related to hazards associated with face mechanization, coal transport, methane gas control measures, gas outbursts, coal and rock outbursts, fire fighting add control, explosion suppression and control measures and other related hazard factors. There was also much discussion on miner training, miner's attitudes toward safety and accident prevention practices, and preparation and enforcement of safety rules and regulations. The delegation was very warmly received and constant attention was given to our needs. Our numerous questions were answered with candor although quite often in not as much detail as we would have liked.

A mining company has entered into contractual commitments to supply certain quantities of its product to clients in each time period. Failure to fulfil its obligations would damage its reputation as a reliable supplier. The planned production would normally be sufficient unless major problems such as highwall failures, roof falls, natural disaster, or strikes that interrupt production or delays in obtaining environmental permits, occur. To overcome these difficulties, the company may be able to obtain more of the commodity: from its strategic stockpile (if there is sufficient there); by buying it on the spot market; or for some commodities such as gold and uranium, by leasing it. Two sources of uncertainty, the spot price of the commodity and the occurrence of serious incidents that interrupt production, are considered. For simplicity it is assumed that the commodity price follows a geometric Brownian motion, that productions incidents have a binomial distribution, that they are independent from one time period to another and that they do not affect prices. A branching tree structure is used to model the joint evolution of prices and production incidents. The aim of this research project was to evaluate the companyÆs options for fulfilling its contractual commitments. When evaluating these options, multi-stage stochastic programming with recourse was used to solve this problem because in addition to providing the dollar value of the project, it gives decision-makers the æroadmapÆ to reach the optimal value. That is, how much material should be bought/sold on the spot market, how much to add to/subtract from the stockpile, how much to lease and in the worst case what the shortfall would be, for each time period as a function of the current spot price and breakdown status. A case-study over a five-year period is used to illustrate the proposed procedure. In this study the production would be sufficient to cover the companyÆs contractual commitments unless production incidents occur. Focus is on evaluating the impact of the quantity initially in the stockpile on the value of the project when the commodity market is tight, that is, when only small quantities can be bought on the spot market or by leasing.

This study predicts the level of smoke that miners might meet while trying to escape a coal mine fire and describes how smoke would impede their safe escape. For this study, the authors assumed that miners exit through an escapeway adjacent to the burning entry, that some air would leak from the burning entry to the escapeway. The following conclusions were made: • A very low amount of air leakage to the escapeway can produce a critical level of visual obscurity from smoke. This shows that intake airways may be as susceptible to smoke visibility problems as return airways. • This critical level of smoke obscurity is reached much before a critical level of carbon monoxide is reached. • Small fires can cause a severe sensory irritation that further limits vision. Thus, reliable eye protection is very important. These results show that methods to guide miners through dense smoke will contribute greatly to saving lives during mine fires.
