The ultraviolet spectrum of isopropyl ethylthionocarbamate (the principal constituent of Dow flotation collector Z-200) in water and of Z-200 itself in water was found to have an absorption peak at 242 nanometers(nm). The height of this peak was found to be directly proportional to isopropyl ethylthionocarbamate concentrations up to 15 p.p.m. Z-200 contains about 90 per cent isopropyl ethylthionocarbamate and the heightof the peak was proportionately lower, but obeyed the straight line relationship up to 15 p.p.m. This showed the potential value of spectrophotometric measurements for the determination of Z-200 residuals in flotation liquors.Methyl ethyldithiocarbamate (an impurity in Z-200) increased the peak height slightly, but other impurities in Z-200, xanthates, and most inorganic salts present in flotation liquors do not interfere. However nitrate ion and thiosulphate ion have absorption peaks which overlap the isopropyl ethylthionocarbamate peak.The simplest general method to overcome this effect is to extract the isopropyl ethylthionocarbamate into cyclohexane and to measure the absorbance of the extract.The maximum absorbance of the cydohexane extract was at 247 nm and the peak height at this wavelength was found to be directly proportional to the isopropyl ethylthionocarbamate or Z-200 concentration in the original aqueous solution. An alternative method is to measure the spectrum of the original aqueous solution using the aqueous raffinate from extraction as a reference solution. This gives the spectrum due to isopropyl ethylthionocarbamate alone and measurement of the absorbance at 242 nm gives the concentration in the original aqueous solution. Both methods give the same value for the concentration of isopropyl ethylthionocarbamate in the original solution.

When the 2008 Olympic Games begin in Beijing, China is September it will not only mark the end of the journey for the Olympic torch and the thou-sands of participating athletes, but the games will also mark the culmination of a massive amount of construction in the city. On display for the world to see will be 31 new and refurbished venues including the 91,000-seat National Stadium called the ?Bird?s Nest? and the aquatics center, called the Water Cube. What will not be featured as prominently on the television cameras broadcasting the games around the world will be the network of tunnels built beneath the city. But that infrastructure of rail lines will be of critical importance to the games. While preparing to host the world, China added a subway tunnel that will include four stops in the Olympic Park. The 4.4-km (2.7-mile) subway line that runs through the complex of stadiums, gymnasiums and parks began trial operations in June. Prior to the opening of that line, Beijing's No. 5 subway line, which runs through the heart of the city from north to south, opened in October. Rehabilitation, reclamation and restoration are all terms used to describe the repair of land after mining. Here, restoration is used to mean restoring the land's original use, capability or productivity. Effective restoration is dependent on good planning before mining commences and must include a clear definition of post-mining objectives. The physical condition of the land within the mining licence was that of an imperfectly drained soil in permanent pasture, supporting a seasonal supply dairying unit. During the mining process, the soil layers were separated, with the topsoil stockpiled separately. As part of the restoration process, the land was recontoured to encourage surface drainage, with topsoil spread evenly over the recontoured tailings. Low grond pressure machinery was used to minimise soil compaction, with light discing and harrowing used to increase water infiltration. A permanent pasture was sown, with weed species controlled by spraying, both before and after pasture establishment.  Soil testing has been used extensively to ensure there were no nutrient deficiencies that good compromise pasture establishment and performance. Controlled grazing practices were used to ensure that the sown pastures became well established.

Adsorption of lead and ferric iron on quartz and alumina is presented as a function of pH. Only the hydrolyzed species of these metal ions, FeOH++ and PbOH+, adsorb significantly on each of these minerals. Zeta potentials of quartz were measured as a function of pH in the presence of various additions of aluminum, lead, and magnesium salts. Sign reversal occurs at the pH values where significant concentrations of hydroxy complexes are formed. Models of adsorption are presented in the absence and presence of collector. The mechanism of adsorption of metal and collector species in the activation of nonmetallic minerals is still the center of considerable discussion in spite of the extensive study given this system. Until recently, the view was widely held that hydrated metal ions were responsible for this phenomenon. This fact is surprising, since it had been shown that the pH range in which flotation is effected corresponds to that in which metal ion hydrolysis occurs.' Additional support of this concept was pro vided by the work of Wolstenholme and Schulman in another system.' Later work has shown that hydroxy complexes of metal ions are the active species. These studies have also indicated that basic aqueous complexes of metal-collector may be necessary for flotation.3-7 Depending on the molecular weight of the collector, formation of these complexes may occur before or after precipitation of the metal-collector salt has occurred. Ion pair formation can occur when low molecular weight collectors are involved because relatively high concentrations of metal hydroxy complex and collector can be present in solution before precipitation occurs. This is not the case when high molecular weight collectors are used. A model of aqueous complex adsorption has been presented6,7 in which it has been assumed that adsorption occurs by the formation of water from adsorbed hydroxyl and hydrogen of the hydroxyl contained in the complex. Other authors8 have suggested that hy-droxy complexes are involved in these systems but that collector adsorption occurs by replacement of the hydroxyl of the adsorbed metal hydroxy complex with a fatty acid anion. All of these investigations have involved mineral surfaces that were negatively charged so that it is not possible to state with certainty whether hydrated metal ions or hydroxy complexes are the active species in this system. Use of a positively charged mineral should be helpful, however, since the hydrated metal ion will be repelled from this surface. On the other hand, if the hydroxy complex adsorbs by splitting out water, surface charge should have no effect because of the free energy decrease that the system will experience when water is formed. In this regard, sapphire is well-suited for study, since its surface is positively charged until approximately pH 9. Electrokinetic studies of quartz in the presence of various metal ions should also be useful in establishing the mechanisms of adsorption in these systems. That is, if the hydroxy complexes adsorb by water formation, drastic changes in the zeta potential should occur in the pH range in which hydrolysis occurs. In this view, adsorption of ions of widely different hydrolysis characteristics on both sapphire and quartz was measured. In addition, zeta potentials of quartz were measured as a function of pH in the presence of various metal ions and compared with flotation responses obtained under similar conditions. Experimental Materials and Techniques Reagent-grade aluminum, ferric and magnesium chlorides, and lead nitrate were used in this investigation. Adjustments in pH were made with reagent-grade HCl or KOH. Conductivity water, made by passing distilled water through an ion exchange column, was used in all of the experiments.

The Barrick Zaldivar mine is an openpit, heap-leach copper mine in Region II of northern Chile at an elevation of 3,300 m (10,826 ft), approximately 1,400 km (870 miles) north of Santiago and 175 km (109 miles) southeast of the port city of Antofagasta. In 2006, Zaldívar produced 307 million lbs of copper, with reserves estimated at 5.7 billion lbs. The mine uses conventional methods of openpit mining: Pure cathode copper is produced by three stages of crushing and stacking the ore, followed by heap leaching and bacterial activity to extract copper from the ore into solution. A solvent extraction and electrowinning process then removes the copper from solution and produces the cathode copper. A flotation plant also recovers copper contained in the fine fraction of the crushed ore. In 2006, an existing A-frame structure that covered copper ore from the mine?s secondary crushing operation was damaged beyond repair. The material delivery configuration of this original structure had the conveyor carrying incoming ore directly over the low roof to drop ore into the building at its peak, and ore trickling from the sides of the conveyor had accumulated on the roof, overloading it. A better solution had to be found, and fast: First, the Chilean Commission does not permit uncovered piles of this type since the extremely fine material leads to serious pollution problems. Second, Barrick Zaldivar is very concerned about worker safety, and the amount of dust created by the uncovered pile was not acceptable. The commercial application of electrolysis to zinc sulphate solutions for the production of metallic zinc is a development ·of the past twenty years. Earlier attempts failed to give satisfactory results, chiefly because certain harmful elements were either not recognised as being present in the solution, or, if recognised, suitable methods of removal had not been developed. The electrodeposition of zinc from zinc sulphate solution is extremely sensitive to the influence of a great many factors, all of which appear to be closely inter-related.Some of these factors tend to minimise the necessity for a high degree of purity of the solution, while other factors aggravate the harmful nature of certain impurities.The relationship existing betweBn the various factors in zinc electrolysis makes a general discussion of the injurious effect of impurities very difficult since, under one set of conditions a given concentration of an impurity may be of minor: importance, where its under another set of conditions the same concentration of that impurity may prove dangerous to successful electrolysis.

This paper is intended to give a general review of current gold extraction technology for free-milling or non-refractory auriferous ores. Fundamental process concepts and some of the differences between the current technologies is referred to. Typical flowsheets and layouts are provided and it is demonstrated that technology for extracting free-milling gold is relatively simple. For environmentally sensitive areas such as encountered in New Zealand relevant cyanide decay and destruction technology is also discussed. Brief mention is made of some likely future innovations. Finally reference is made of New Zealand's previous significant contribution to gold extraction technology. These contributions were pioneering ranging from the cyanide leaching of gold to adsorption by carbon and precipitation by zinc. New Zealand has not allowed its potential gold projects to develop at a rate commensurate with the rest of the world thereby stifling its renowned innovative approach in this technology. It is time for New Zealand mining to recognise its unique opportunities in developing gold extraction technology and again take a rightful place in leading the way.

This paper reports the results of a study to determine the effect of process control agent (PCA) on the characteristics of Ti-Mg powders during milling. It has been shown that a 2% increase in PCA content leads to up to a 40% increase in yield of the milled powder but reduces the kinetics of the mechanical alloying process. The introduction of 4% PCA decreases the mean powder particle size by up to 30%, whereas 6% PCA increases the mean particle size by up to 230%. During 1986, the Government continued with efforts to ease the country's almost total reliance on coffee exports for trade revenues by allocating 45% of the Government's budget to commerce and industrial projects. The collapse in coffee prices in 1985 continued to exacerbate the country's growing trade deficit, weakened currency, and dwindling reserves of foreign exchange in 1986. Amoco Burundi Petroleum Corp., a subsidiary of Amoco International Oil Co., continued with plans to drill at least two exploration wells in Lake Tanganyika in 1987. Both offshore and onshore drilling exploration was planned by Amoco Burundi. Any oil or gas finds were expected to have substantial impact on the Burundian economy, as a major portion of the country's trade deficit was directly attributable to petroleum and gas imports.

Industrial processes have been developed for ferrochromium production, ilmenite smelting, and cobalt recovery from slag. Recent work has been done on such processes as the production of ferronickel from laterite ores, the fuming and condensation of magnesium, and the recovery of platinum group metals from 'difficult' feedstocks.

The u.s. Bureau of Mines investigated electrode designs for electrowinning lead metal from a LiCl-KCl-PbCI2 electrolyte at 4500 C. The major objective of this investigation was to decrease the energy requirement for lead electrowinning. Electrolysis was performed in a bench-scale cell using several graphite electrode assemblies. Such parameters as electrode spacing, current density, and chlorine gas removal from the anode were investigated in the bench-scale tests. An optimum electrode assembly, termed the sawtooth design, was scaled up and operated at 3,000 and 4,000 A. The sawtooth electrodes operating at 3,000 A produced lead for 0.66 kW·h/kg. The electrodes were constructed by cutting large triangular grooves in the electrode surfaces. The electrodes were placed together such that the triangular peaks of one electrode projected into the triangular valleys of the other electrode. Chlorine did not build up on the anode with the sawtooth electrodes.

Roof bolter operators may be exposed to high respirable dust concentrations on continuous miner sections with blowing face ventilation when bolting is performed downwind of the continuous miner. One solution to reduce the high respirable dust concentrations is to use a canopy air curtain (CAC) to deliver clean air from a filtered blower fan directly to the bolter operators under the canopies. The influence of CAC installation in the airflow and dust dispersion around the location of the roof bolter operator can be evaluated by using computational fluid dynamics (CFD). This study, performed by the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH), considers two scenarios: (1) a roof bolting machine in the center of the entry for installation of the fifth row of bolts from the face, and (2) a roof bolting machine positioned close to the face for the installation of the last row of bolts. In both scenarios, the bolting machine is placed in an environment which contains 6.0 mg/m3 of respirable dust and is ventilated by a blowing curtain with 3000 cfm (1.42 m3 /s) of air. This environment is used to simulate the roof bolter machine operating downstream of a continuous mining machine. Two operation positions are simulated at the same bolting location: dual drill heads in the inward position for two inside bolts and dual drill heads in the outward position for two outside bolts. The influence of the CAC on airflows and dust dispersion is evaluated with the CAC operating at 250 cfm (0.12 m3 /s).

A weak airborne radiometric anomaly was examined in the field and the presence of uranium confirmed. Rotary-percussion drilling showed the presence of uranium but a subsequent programme of diamond and rotary percussion drilling indicated that the concentration of uranium was uneconomic. Within the tufts and volcanics of the prospect the uranium existed as uranyl phosphates within the oxidized zone. Geological mapping and the diamond drill core showed that the Stag Creek Volcanics are part of the Lower Proterozoic Masson Formation, probably with member status, rather than the expression of an Archaean basement ridge. This change in the interpretation of the fundamental structure of the Pine Creek Geosyncline has led to a reexamination of the stratigraphy and to suggestions which differ from the current concept.

The purpose of this program is to extend electromagnetic (EM) techniques for use in locating miners trapped in mines as deep as 1000 m. A previously developed EM system is considered adequate for use at mines less than 300 m deep where it has a probability of detection of 54%. A system for deep mines must keep underground equipment simple, and use extremely low frequencies (ELF), sensitive receivers, and noise cancellation. The proposed location method, developed by Develco for other applications, is based on vector field measurements from two or more static sensors and computation of source location by iterative techniques. During Phase II, very sensitive search coil sensors were built and used in a separate test to verify the feasibility of atmospheric noise cancellation. A "Breadboard" location system version without cancellation, which is a fieldable test bed to evaluate receiving and location functions, was tested and supplied. Very good results were achieved from the first in-mine test with the transmitter at a depth of 380 m. It is expected the results of this work, and additional evaluation tests in the future, will be used to define the requirements for a prototype operational system.

"Continuous mining systems containing multiple excavators producing multiple products of raw materials are highly complex, exhibiting strong interdependency between constituents. Furthermore, random variables govern the system, which causes uncertainty in the supply of raw materials: uncertainty in knowledge about the reserve, the quantity demanded by the customers, and the breakdown of equipment. This paper presents a stochastic-based mine process simulator capturing different sources of uncertainties. It aims to quantify the effect of geological uncertainty and its impacts on the ability to deliver contractually defined quantities and qualities of coal, and on the system efficiency in terms of utilization of major equipment. Two different areas of research are combined: geostatistical simulation for capturing geological uncertainty, and stochastic process simulation to predict the performance and reliability of a large continuous mining system.The process of modelling and simulation in this specific production environment is discussed in detail. Problem specification and a new integrated simulation approach are presented. A case study in a large coal mine is used to demonstrate the impacts and evaluate the results in terms of reaching optimal production control decisions to increase average equipment utilization and control coal quality and quantity.
