This is the sixth annual tabulation that gives mineral royalty information. This tabulation, like the previous editions, includes all of the earlier data plus more than 100 new entries. In addition to the royalty information, some entries show the cost of purchased reserves. An article in the December 1984 Kentucky Coal Journal could have far reaching applications. It explains that a banking firm examined the "reserve risk" as one of six factors for analysis when financing a coal project. The firm concluded that coal reserves in Kentucky are worth an average of $0.29/t ($0.26 per st) in-place. The banking firm based this in-place value on its examination of more than 50 leases. In-place value is especially important when trying to establish a mineral value for a given deposit. Ernie Lehman wrote to this author after last year's column appeared and he quoted the lease rates for lead and zinc on federal land. He states, from first hand information, that the leases are based on a percentage of net smelter return as follows: 4% for the first five years, 4.5% for the next five years, and 5% thereafter. The figures used in last year's column ($ per st) came from dividing reported royalty income by reported production. The information reported last year merely translates the results of the net smelter return (as written in the lease) to royalty income per ton to the US Government for the various years. Statistics from the Minerals Management Service of the Federal Government show that oil and gas account for 40% and 53%, respectively, of the Federal royalty income. Coal accounts for about 4% and all other minerals, the remaining 3%. Oil and gas leases are mostly at 12.5%. Most of the coal leases are at 12.5% for surface mining operations and 8% for underground mining. Many of the other commodities are leased at 5%, which has been true for decades. Relative to Federal leases, this year's table shows some percentages and some costs per ton. This was done to give information about the leases and also to show income produced by various commodities. Note that some commodities have a variation in $/ton even though the royalty percent is the same. These variations result from a combination of factors that influence the value of a mineral commodity. The same caveats that have appeared in previous columns relative to factors that influence the value of reserves are restated. The data in the table serve as a general reference and are not intended to present an absolute scale of reserves costs. Several factors influence the value of any mineral commodity. The factors include: • location/transportation (especially significant for most industrial minerals); • market conditions both for the commodity and the company acquiring the right to mine it; *quality or grade of the deposit as it reflects the amount of processing/beneficiation necessary to produce the finished product; and • legislative restrictions and conditions for mining a given material at a given site. These and other factors will significantly influence the cost of reserves. The table shows the range of royalties and the variations in the basis of computing the fees. In a few instances, it gives the cost of acquired reserves based on purchase price and quantitative estimates of the material in place. The table lists the commodity in column 1, and the subsequent columns give the location - either by state, US geographic area or Canadian province; the cost - R for royalty and P for purchased cost; and the year in which the lease or purchase agreement occurred. The last column offers either comments or gives a footnote number for more information. The cost column requires more explanation. The units may refer to cubic yards (/yd), cubic feet (/cu ft), tons (/T, 2000 lbs) or acres (/A). 1 cu yd = 0.7646 m3 1 cu ft = 0.2832 m3 1st=0.9078t 1 acre = 0.4047 hm or m2 In several cases, the royalty is a percentage of the sales price of the finished product and is levied against either the amount produced or the amount sold. This paper is one of a series being prepared by the United States Bureau of Mines on tunneling methods. The tunneling methods described are those used at the Ojuela unit of the Compania Minera de Penoles, S. A., the Mexican subsidiary of the American Metal Co., Ltd., of New York. The Ojuela unit is situated some 4 miles southeast of Mapimi, Durango. Mexico, the latter place being connected by a 15-mile narrow-gage railway with the standard gage railroad at Bermejillo, some 40 miles to the north of Torreon, the location of one of the company's smelters.

THE fact that coals of different ranks and even of the same rank differ greatly in their amenability to froth flotation is well known. In recognition of the need for an explanation of this phenomenon, two hypotheses have been suggested. Wilkins1 reported that the floatability of coals increased with an increase of the carbon content or rank. This postulate is handicapped by the fact that bituminous coals that possess moderate carbon contents are actually more floatable than anthracite coals that have high carbon contents, as shown in columns 6 and 9 of Table I. Taggart and his associates' implied that the difference of floatability between bituminous and anthracite coal was caused by the variation of carbon-hydrogen ratio. This is not applicable to the relative floatability of other coals and carbons. For example, column 11 of Table I shows that the carbon-hydrogen ratios of low-floating lignitic coal and non-floating animal charcoal are not only smaller than the moderate-floating anthracite coal, but are also similar to the high-floating bituminous coal. Furthermore, according to this hypothesis, high temperature coke-A (464), Ceylon graphite (1238), and lamp-black (357), all possessing extremely high carbon-hydrogen ratios, should be less floatable than other substances having much lower carbon- hydrogen ratios such as high volatile-B bituminous coal (11.9 to 22), anthracite coal (35.7 to 60.5), lignitic coal (15.6 to 33.6), and charcoal (13 to 26.2). However the former group is actually more floatable than the latter group.

"The high rock pressures at the deeper levels of the Tsumeb Mine have necessitated the changing of the mining methods and the introduction of cable bolts. After two rockfalls in the cable-bolted stopes, the mechanics of cable bolting were investigated. Practical methods were developed to find the best grout mixtures, the bond stresses between cables and cement, the bond stresses between rock and cement and the load on the cable bolts, which was mathematically calculated from data observed underground. The design of the cable bolt support system as used at the Tsumeb Mine is explained. GeneralThe Tsumeb Mine is in northern South West Africa/Namibia, approximately 400 km by road from the capital city, Windhoek, at an elevation of 1300 m above sea level. Mining operations in Tsumeb were started in 1905 by the Otavi Minen und Eisenbahn Gesellschaft and continued, with an interruption during the Depre ssion, until 1940, when the mine was closed and taken over by the Custodian of Enemy Property. The present owner, Tsumeb Corporation Limited, obtained the mine in 1947 and restarted the underground mining operations in 1949 after the mine was dewatered. Currently, the stoping operations are between 26 Level (840 m below surface) and 38 Level (1260 m below surface). In addition, the mine is an important silver producer and has produced 670,100 kg of silver since 1947."

There are many diverse opinions on the contribution of minerals to the economy, but there is a dearth of adequate quantitative information. The mining industry is an important economical factor in Vietnam. Mining is presently being conducted at about 60 locations and at over 1000 mines. Petroleum extraction and coal mining are the most important parts of industry though metals such as zinc, tin, chromites, iron are also extracted. Last year the sector produced 20 million tons of crude oil, 26 million tons of coal and 500,000 tons of apatite. In particular, Vietnam is one of the world?s largest producers of anthracite, and it is one of the top producers of ilmenite and zircon in the Asia-Pacific region. The government intends to increase the mining production on all levels, however, at present one can observe adverse impacts of the mining activities on the natural environment such as insufficient waste dump rehabilitation, occurrence of acid mine drainage, mining subsidence and emissions as well as lack of appropriate water treatment facilities. This paper describes the current mining situation, future perspectives, the major environmental challenges of the country and approaches to solve these problems. Particular emphasis will be given to the research project ?RAME ? Research Association on Mining and Environment in Vietnam?, a venture carried out by universities, research centres and industry. This project is worked out in collaboration with the national Vietnamese coal and industrial minerals company VINACOMIN.

Coal is our most abundant, low cost energy resource. Expansion of its use is being challenged due to "SO2 emission" regulation with even more restrictive legislation pending. High quality coal reserves are becoming more limited due to greater use in recent years. Aids to allow more use of coal in today's environment include beneficiation of coal before combustion and scrubbing the emissions from coal during combustion. Dow's efforts to help meet these challenges by beneficiating coal include true heavy media gravity separations with chlorinated solvents and liquid/liquid partitioning processes and "Dow Solvent Recovery Technology" to recover the solvent from product (or floats) and rejects (sinks), The objectives of the efforts to clean coal are to reduce sulfur and ash. In this paper, the solvents will be described; a general flow diagram presented; some of the results on upgrading various coals will be described, and projected costs of full-scale plants using chlorinated solvents will be compared to conventional cleaning plants.

The frustration encountered by exploration crews in connection with land acquisition could be graphed to show a correlation with the natural law that everything tends to become more so. Figure I shows a rather common, situation. The combinations of ingredients are almost limitless and the resulting brew is often poisonous to an exploration man. A single step, that of taking a series of deep soil samples is often delayed until some sense can be made from "floating" unpatented claims which are obscure in orientation as well as position, placer claims overlapping lode claims, location posts with empty Prince Albert cans, and claims with no apparent assessment work for ten years. Add to this some patented claims with¬out monuments, a state or federal withdrawal area which may or may not invalidate pre-existing claims, a loosely defined tunnel site, and some ranchers who understandably resent the separation of surface rights from mineral rights. The picture is familiar to exploration men. One approach to such problems is to ignore them until someone voices an objection -- but then an even more chaotic situation is likely to develop. Another practice is to stake new claims to cover all ground that is "open" at first glance and then find out if there are conflicts so that the new claims can be adjusted accordingly.

In February 2010, Teck?s newest Concentrator at Mina Carmen de Andacollo (CDA), Andacollo, Chile was commissioned. The Concentrator is a single line configuration, comprising of one 36 ft diameter x 20 ft long SAG mill driven by an 18,000 hp gearless drive. The SAG mill feeds two ball mills each 25 ft in diameter x 40.5 ft long, each driven by a total of 19,000 hp through dual pinion drives. A series of four phases will be reviewed from operational readiness, mechanical completion, commissioning, and ramp-up. Also, now after 6 months of operation, this paper will review the significant steps taken during ramp-up enabling the announcement of commercial production, in October 2010.

THE history, geology, ore deposits and current mining operations of the Huitzuco district have been described by C. W. Vaupell1 and the current mill operations by David Segura.2 This paper completes the story of Huitzuco with a description of the reduction of the flotation concentrates. The predominant ore mineral in the Huitzuco deposit is livingstonite, a rare, mercury-antimony sulphide (HgS.2Sb2S3). Other associated minerals include cinnabar, stibnite and elemental sulphur. The gangue is largely limestone and gypsum. Former operators mined a selected grade of ore, from which the mercury was recovered by an expensive, inefficient operation. A consid-erable tonnage of rejects and fills, carrying mercury and antimony, was left in the mine. In order to recover both mercury and antimony from these fills and also from newly developed ore, a combination method has been developed, by means of which the livingstonite is concentrated by flotation and the flotation concentrates subsequently reduced to metallic mercury and antimony. An essential part of the flotation treatment, as developed by Segura, is the use of copper sulphate as an activating agent. A typical analysis of concentrates now being produced at the property is as follows: Hg, 7.73 per cent; Sb, 26.40; Fe, 1.20; S, 29.68; CaO, 11.50; MgO, 7.25; Si02, 1.63; A1203, 0.65.

Comprehensive field tests were made by the Federal Bureau of Hines at the Conda open pit mine near Soda Springs, Idaho, to determine whether surface geophysical techniques could be used to detect and delineate faults in phosphate deposits. The tests included seismic refraction, magnetometry, electrical resistivity, and airborne photography. Of the several geophysical techniques tested in the field, horizontal resistivity profiling was the most effective method for diagnosing faults. The method is quick, inexpensive, accurate, and can be easily used by mining company personnel to detect and delineate faults.

CLEANING fine coal in jigs is not new in Europe, where the feldspar jig is being used almost exclusively for this purpose. A feldspar jig operates with an artificial bed made up generally of feldspar or other hard rock material. Dimensions and specific gravity of this material must be of suitable values for good bedding qualities. For good efficiency, the size should range between 1x2 in. and 2x2x½ in. thick. The disadvantage of an artificial bed is that it is not mobile and must be replaced every so often with new material to obtain good cleavage characteristics. A semi-mobile bed has been developed to retain only a part of the feldspar on the sieve screen— the other part is drawn off with the refuse material, from which it is reclaimed and returned to the jig feed. Recirculating this feldspar rock offers definite advantages. However, in time it will lose its original shape because of wear, and new bed material must be added to the jig feed. The latest feldspar jigs arc generally air-pulsated, Baum-type jigs, although more than 70 pct of the feldspar jigs operating in Continental Europe are still of the piston type. These jigs are very popular in Europe, but they do require a great deal of time and attention. New Theory to Eliminate Artificial Bedding: At the preparation plants of Pittsburg & Midway Coal Mining Co. it has always been the contention that a small piston-type jig could be developed to clean fine 1/4x0-in. coal down to 28 to 60 mesh efficiently by obtaining and admitting bedding material from the present plant refuse circuit to the jig feed. This eliminates use of artificial bedding materials. The jig should incorporate these essential adjustable features as follows: Adjustable Sieve Screen A screen that can be raised and lowered to increase or decrease washing compartment depth. The sieve screen also can be set on an incline level, or decline. Adjustable Plunger Eccentric Length of stroke can be adjusted to increase or decrease pulsion and suction. Variable Plunger Speed Variable speed reducer for decreasing and increasing the number of strokes per minute. Water Distribution Adjustable baffle plate separating the plunger and sieve compartment so the water can be distributed uniformly over the entire sieve screen area. Refuse Ejector Special unique rubber-type refuse ejector gate operated by air and electrically controlled (as a conventional jig). Automatic Control Conventional float that measures the specific gravity of the coal-water refuse medium in the jig is of the submerged type. The float is mounted on a vertical stem held in position by two parallel arms. A movable weight regulates the effective specific gravity of the float. The float stem can be raised and lowered, having a graduated scale to indicate the depth of bed for the setting of the float. Hutch Drawoff Hutch material is drawn from the cell compartment to the elevator compartment by gravity. Neste trabalho, as diferentes microestruturas, as propriedades mecânicas e a soldabilidade do ferro fundido submetido aos processos de soldagem SMAW, com a utilização de eletrodos de Fe-Ni, e GMAW mecanizado, com a aplicação de arame de Fe-Ni e proteção de Ar-25%CO2, foram investigadas e comparadas. Dentro deste contexto, após a realização de testes de soldagem, com e sem a aplicação de pré-aquecimento, utilizando diferentes parâmetros de soldagem, os cordões de solda foram avaliados por meio de microscopia óptica e microscopia eletrônica de varredura, assim como pela análise dos perfis de micro-dureza e da composição química do arame e do material depositado. Foi possível avaliar a influência da aplicação de diferentes parâmetros elétricos de soldagem, a utilização ou não de pré-aquecimento nas microestruturas geradas nas zonas fundidas, parcialmente fundidas e termicamente afetadas dos cordões obtidos, assim como as propriedades mecânicas.

Equipment was constructed which permitted the hot compression of 99.8 pct Armco iron and 2.8 pct Si steel at constant true strain rates of 0.05 to 1 per sec over the temperature range 600" to 1000°C. A maximum true strain of 1.9 could be attained, followed by immediate quenching or by isothermal annealing. True stress-true strain curves were obtained, and the steady-state flout stress, a, strain rate, i, and temperature, T, were found to fit the following expression: The constants A, a, n', and AH were determined for the two ,materials. The activation energies obtained for Arrnco iron and silicon steel are 66 and 80 kcal per mole, respectively, and approximate those for seu- diffusion and for creep. This indicates that hot compression is a diffusion-controlled thermally activated process. THE hot compression of iron and steel is usually carried out in the austenite temperature range,1"7 as this is the one of greatest interest with respect to industrial hot working. However, a disadvantage of testing in the austenite range is that the hot-worked structure is destroyed by the phase transformations taking place during cooling. The present study was therefore carried out in the ferritic temperature range, and the hot-worked substructures were preserved by rapid quenching after deformation. The substructural results will be described in a separate paper, and the present communication is restricted to the strain rate/stress/temperature relationship observed during hot working. The results of hot-compression testing are usually given in the form of true stress/true strain curves, with a different curve for each temperature/strain rate ~ornbination.',~,~ Sometimes simple algebraic equations are fitted to the curves, so that certain extrapolations or interpolations can be performed.1'2'5 These equations are, however, devoid of mechanistic interpretations. The present study was undertaken to show that hot compression can be described by an equation of the type used in creep studies. That is, it will be shown that the temperature dependence of the strain rate in hot working is well-represented by an Arrhenius term, with an activation energy similar to that for creep. Also it will be seen that the stress dependence of the strain rate is similar to that for creep EXPERIMENTAL METHOD AND MATERIALS The investigation was carried out with the following three ferrous materials: 1) Armco iron; 2) Armco iron with 0.26 pct Mn; 3) 2.8 pct Si steel. The first two materials were utilized for investigations performed in the temperature range 600" to 800°C; the last one was used for tests at temperatures from 600" to 1000°C. The materials were of commercial purity,* as shown in Table I. Cylinders of five different sizes were prepared by strain annealing. The resulting mean grain diameter was 3 mm in the 1-in. Armco iron and 2 mm in the other sizes and grades. Different ratios of diameter/height were used to enable the determination of the coefficient of friction. The specimen faces were provided with concentric grooves, which acted as lubricant holders during compression, as recommended by English and ~ackofen' and others.2'9 Powdered glass lubricants were applied to the samples before hot compression to decrease friction and barreling, following the practice of previous investigator~.~~~~~~~~ Different mixtures of glass powder were used for each temperature, after the determination of suitable compositions by experiment.'' Equipment for Hot Compression. Hot-compression tests were carried out on an adapted 150-ton vertical hydraulic extrusion press and also on a modified high-temperature creep machine. The modified extrusion press was used for temperatures up to 800°C. The following items were added to the press: a) a high-temperature furnace with built-in upper and lower platens; and b) a transmission assembly, which permitted the attainment of logarithmically decreasing crosshead speeds. These accessories are described in detail in Ref. 11.

The idea of using water-only cyclones to scalp clean coal from the feed to other devices has recently been gaining in popularity.l,2,6 An indication of this popularity is that water- only cyclone scalping is already employed in a few commercial plants. Water-only cyclones scalp the feed to a heavy media vessel in the Warwick plant,3 to Deister tables in the Rowland plant,4 and to a heavy media cyclone circuit in the Amherst Coal Company's McGregor plant.5 Despite this trend, we found surprisingly little information in the literature on the performance of water-only cyclone scalping. Therefore, we undertook a study of its technical merits, limiting our investigation to a water-only cyclone scalper in conjunction with heavy-media cyclones. We felt this to be a reasonable combination of equipment, since both processes operate well on the same size coal. First, we developed simple mathematical relationships revealing general characteristics of the system. Next, we compared the clean coal yield and quality obtainable by the system on four different coals with that obtainable by heavy-media cyclone circuit alone and water-only cyclones middlings recirculation circuit alone. This was done by using computer program to simulate the operation of the three systems. Finally, we considered the effect that implementation of the system would have on a typical preparation plant circuit.

This study investigated the operating parameters that affect the kinetic dissolution of copper and cobalt from sulfidic ores. The sulfuric acid concentration, temperature, sodium chloride concentration, particle size range, and leaching time were selected to deduce the kinetic mechanism of the leaching reaction. Other parameters, such as a stirring speed of 250 rpm and the percentage solid 10% w/v, remained constant. The results reveal that an increase in acid concentration enhances the leaching rate of copper and cobalt. Copper and cobalt dissolution was positively affected by the addition of sodium chloride. The highest leaching rates of copper and cobalt were 24.71% and 15.65%, respectively. The chemical control and diffusion control by shrinking core models are well fitted as the kinetic models representing the dissolution of the minerals. The respective activation energies for copper and cobalt dissolution of 10.92 and 31.023 kJ mol− 1 for the chemical control and 18.83 and 37.28 kJ mol− 1 for diffusion reaction control were established from temperature-based experiments.

A patent is a right granted by the government to exclude others from making, using, selling, offering to sell, or importing a claimed invention. Once the right is granted, the patentee may use the U.S. Federal Courts to enforce that right. Reading a patent from a litigation perspective is quite different than reading it from a technical perspective. The Judge's interpretation of the claims will affect their scope, and likely the ultimate outcome of a patent case. Additionally, the patent right can be challenged. If done successfully, the patent can be rendered invalid or unenforceable. The likelihood of success, and well as the achievement of other litigation goals is often influenced by the forum where the litigation is initiated. Finally, patent litigation costs are significant, and will weigh heavily in the decision to file (or fight) a patent lawsuit.

Experimental results on the oxidation reaction kinetics in the forward combustion oil recovery process are presented. A total of 48 runs were made wherein a stationary thin layer of coked, unconsoli-dated sand was burned isothermally in a combustion cell. Individual runs were made at various temperature levels to permit determination of the effect of temperature upon the reaction. An expression was obtained for the burning rate of carbon as a function of carbon concentration, combustion temperature and oxygen partial pressure. The carbon burning rate for two types of crude oil indicated a first order reaction with respect to both carbon concentration and oxygen partial pressure. The effect of combustion temperature on the reaction rate constant matched the Arrhenius equation. The activation energy was similar for the two crude oils examined. The activation energy decreased for a porous media containing clay. The rate of oxidation of crude oil at reservoir temperature was found to be significant. Other significant findings included information on hydrogen-carbon content of fuel residues, fuel reactivity and the products of combustion. INTRODUCTION The production of crude oil by underground combustion has been studied in the laboratory by many investigators.1-5 Results of laboratory and field experiments have been reported in the literature describing the forward combustion process. But as yet, no qualitative or quantitative study of the kinetics of fuel combustion involved in this process has been reported. The fuel concentration and the rate at which fuel is burned at the front are important factors governing the air requirement in a forward combustion operation. Although the fuel is essentially unrecoverable crude, the air required to burn the fuel is an important economic factor in this process. Because fuel is burned, the heat transport associated with forward combustion is a key and unique feature of this new oil recovery method. Many investiga-tors5-9 have presented information on the heat transmission and fluid mechanics involved in forward combustion. Berry and Parrish10 demonstrated the utility of considering reaction kinetics in reverse burning. From differential thermal analysis, Tadema11 presented a qualitative discussion of the nature of reactions between oil and oxygen in combustion oil recovery. Although little quantitative work has been done on the reaction kinetics involved in forward combustion oil recovery, an extensive literature does exist on combustion of carbons and oils, and carbonaceous residues from cracking catalyst pellets. Dart, et al., 12 studied the combustion rate for oxidation of carbonaceous residues on clay catalyst pellets, and found the reaction to be second-order with respect to carbon concentration, and first-order with respect to oxygen partial pressure for carbon concentrations less than 2 weight percent of the catalyst weight. The reaction appeared to be first-order with respect to carbon concentration for concentrations greater than 2 percent. Metcalfe13 noted that other workers had found that aging of the fuel during the combustion process was responsible for changing coke properties, and it accounted for the apparent second-order carbon concentration effect found by Dart, et al. It appears that burning of residues from cracking pellets is first-order with respect to both carbon concentration and oxygen partial pressure. Dart, et al., also observed that hydrogen in the hydrocarbon residue appeared to react faster than the carbon. Lewis, et al.,14 studied oxidation of charcoal, coke and graphite in a fluidized bed. Gas velocities were high enough to partially lift and circulate the carbon particles.
