This manual provides instructions for installing, operating, and maintaining a protective canopy on the Galis Mfg. Co. roof drill. The instructions are based upon two actual installations: one made in a mine on roof drill, model 300, and one in the factory. The parts list and engineering drawings for the protective canopy are included at the end of the manual. And a discussion of some alternative design concepts is also included. The manual can also be used for retrofitting other roof drills with similar protective canopies. Skilled mechanics can determine if the instructions herein would be applicable to the other roof drills and can determine any necessary modifications if they are not.

"The material known as coal has a highly variable composition. As a consequence, coals show a great variation in their physical and chemical properties as a function of coal rank. The situation is further complicated because the preparation engineer must deal with raw coal, as mined. This is an assemblage of coal, upwards of 30% mineral matter and, typically, several percent pyrite. The kind and amount of the mineral constituents is also highly variable from source to source. A knowledge of coal rank and source location, and the kind and amount of associated impurities, is the first step in evaluating the response of a raw coal to preparation procedures. The raw coal must first be characterized before information from one source can be extrapolated to that of another.INTRODUCTIONCoal is a black or brownish-black combustible solid, derived from a heterogeneous mixture of plant remains and associated mineral matter that have undergone chemical and physical metamorphic changes by biological and geological processes without free access to air. It is composed principally of carbon, hydrogen and oxygen with lesser amounts of nitrogen and sulfur. 'Its exact chemical and physical nature has remained poorly defined, because the term 'coal' refers to a broad range of coalified solids ranging in rank from anthracite to a variety of bituminous coals of differing volatile matter content, sub-bituminous coals, and ending with lignite and brown coals. The variation in chemical and physical properties through these ranks is massive. In summary, Luckie's (1988) assertion is apropos: ""There is no such thing as coal; there are coals"". The coal preparation engineer, and, most especially, those scientists and engineers from other disciplines wishing to work with coal, must constantly keep this admonition in mind because what is true for one coal seam is often not directly applicable to another."

Location and History God's lake is in the northeastern part of Manitoba, about 400 miles northeast of Winnipeg, or about 250 miles due north of Red lake, Ontario. The lake is quite large, having an overall length of 54 miles and a maximum width of 18 miles. There are numerous islands in the lake, the largest of these, known as Elk island, being about 15 miles long and 3 miles wide in the widest part. The accompanying map (Figure 1) shows the location of God's lake and of the mine. The God's Lake area has long been regarded as promising country for the prospector, but, due to its inaccessibility, practically no prospecting was done prior to 1927. In the years 1927-1931, inclusive, a few prospectors visited the area, but no discoveries were made. In 1932, Bob Jowsey and Archie McDonald entered the area from Island lake. They first prospected in the vicinity of Knife lake, which is immediately south of the main part of God's lake, and then moved on to the latter lake, heading for the north shore of Elk island. The first afternoon on God's Lake, when looking for a place to camp on the north shore of what is now known as Jowsey island, Jowsey discovered a quartz porphyry dyke which was cut by a number of gold-bearing bluish quartz stringers. On the strength of this discovery, he and McDonald began at once to stake the Reno group of claims. Rumours of the discovery brought in other prospectors, and other groups of claims were staked to the east, along the north shore of Elk island. A second discovery was soon made by Dan McCrea on his Gold Standard claims, three and a half miles to the east of the original discovery. Staking still continued to the east, along the north shore of Elk island, and Bob Brown and Harvey McKenzie staked the Akers group on a discovery approximately two miles east of McCrea's discovery. Through the efforts of Jowsey, the Reno, Rand, Elk, and Cona groups, belonging to the original syndicate for which Jowsey and McDonald staked, were combined with the Gold Standard, Greenstone, and Akers groups, and the Company known as God's Lake Gold Mines, Limited, was formed. Several additional groups of claims were later taken over by the Company and a considerable area of adjoining ground was staked to round-out the property.

The rock quality designation (RQD) is a commonly used index for the classification and evaluation of rock mass quality and is widely adopted in mining and geological engineering. The traditional method of obtaining RQD still requires manual measurement of core length and calculation of RQD, which is inefficient. To address this problem, we propose a framework for drilling core image segmentation and RQD estimation from digital images of cores in core boxes based on the deep learning algorithm. The proposed framework is generated by combining the Mask Region-Based Convolutional Neural Networks (Mask R-CNN) instance segmentation algorithm, the U-Shaped Convolutional Neural Networks (U-Net) semantic segmentation algorithm, and the image processing functions of the Open Source Computer Vision Library (OpenCV). To demonstrate the accuracy of the proposed method, seven boreholes in the Xiushuihe vanadium-titanium magnetite mine, located in the Sichuan Province, China, were used as the case study. According to the comparison of the manual measurements and calculations of the cores taken from seven boreholes used to conduct this study, the framework can record the length of the drill cores and calculate RQD within an average error rate of 3.42%, while it saves about 85% of the working time. The results illustrate that the proposed framework enhances the efficiency of RQD calculation while satisfying the engineering requirements.

An existing mining company plans to extend their surface coal mining operations in central Pennsylvania. Although the proposed site contains pyritic material, the results of the acid-base accounting for the site show an overall NP:MPA ratio of 4.26:1 for the entire site. The pyritic material is, however, associated with the lower of the three seams to? be mined. If traditional dragline mining methods were used, this would result in the acidic material being placed at the top of the spoil piles, exposing it to air and water, and therefore to the formation of Acid Mine Drainage (AMD). Further concerns are associated with the fact that the alkaline material is not distributed evenly over the mine site. In order to prevent the formation of AMD, the company has proposed to mine the area using Truck/Shovel mining methods. This technique offers a more flexible alternative for cut sequencing and for the selective placement of waste material. Working with the Department of Mineral Engineering at The Pennsylvania State University, a mine plan was developed for this site. This plan results in the layering of the alkaline and acidic spoil in order to achieve an overall net alkalinity in all spoil areas. Mining of this site should therefore not result in the formation of AMD.

This publication is a compilation of tested methods for the analyses of titanium tetrachloride, titanium sponge, and various intermediate materials and products. They are presented in concise form without the detail usually found in publication of new methods because many of them are modifications of well known procedures. The Electrometallurgical Experiment Station, Boulder City, Nev., has been developing titanium production methods since 1945. Most of this development was on a modified Kroll Process but also included work on sodium reduction and electrolytic methods. During these years a large variety of samples were analyzed. Most of the analytical problems were solved using published methods or modifications of the same. At the start, there were no published procedures for analyzing titanium sponge using spectrochemical methods. A great deal of study was given to testing several of the well known techniques, and some of them, such as direct sparking of the metal, proved to be completely unsatisfactory. Solution-spark techniques were finally tried, and satisfactory procedures were developed for some of the more common impurities. These spectrochemical methods were then put into routine use for several months before their publication.2/ Some new modifications have been made, and techniques have been developed to determine other impurities found in titanium sponge and tetrachloride. All spectrochemical methods used in 1954 are included in this publication.

O presente estudo tem como objetivo avaliar a influência da deformação (e) na obtenção dos coeficientes ?r e r na liga UNS C22000, utilizada especificamente para a produção de projéteis A norma ASTM E 517 que apresenta a metodologia para se determinar esses coeficientes não especifica claramente qual e a ser utilizada. Os resultados alcançados não demonstram diferenças significativas com relação a e utilizada nos ensaios, ou seja, os coeficientes obtidos utilizando 0,10, 0,15 e 0,20 de deformação são os mesmos.

Top outlet sediments from the National Geochemical Survey of Australia have been extracted by a partial extraction method for over 50 elements including gold. The partial extraction results from this low-density survey show discrete coherent anomalies for Au in the vicinity of many of AustraliaÆs known goldfields, and in the vicinity of some minor gold occurrences. In several instances catchment outlet anomalies for Au have been recorded from areas not known to contain significant economic gold. Several large economic goldfields are shown to not produce anomalies in catchment outlet samples. A survey of overbank samples in the Swan Avon catchment of Western Australia at double the sampling density shows that low level anomalies (>1 ppb) can be traced back to source using overbank sediments. Follow-up of one of the Au anomalies at Kent River in previously regarded non-auriferous terrain (western Albany-Fraser Belt) indicates a non-economic, but perhaps geochemically significant, Au anomaly with associated pathfinders including palladium. This may indicate that further exploration of the western part of Albany Fraser Belt for Au is warranted. The combination of catchment overbank samples and partial analysis technique has been shown to be effective at locating the source of gold anomalies from initial low-density continental and regional surveys.CITATION:Mann, A, Davidson, A and de Caritat, P, 2013. Idaho has nearly 6 billion tons of potential sources of phosphorite, 10 to 31 percent P2O5' above and within 100 feet below entry level, the largest potential of any State in the United States. In 1963 Idaho ranked third after Florida and Tennessee in total mine and marketable production of phosphate rock; Montana ranked fourth. This report describes phosphate deposits, mines, and prospects in 10 districts covering most of the Idaho phosphate field. All mine production of phosphate rock in Idaho comes from surface mines and is processed to phosphate fertilizers, phosphoric acid, and elemental phosphorus. Producing districts are Fort Hall (Gay mine), Trail Creek (Conda and Ballard mines), and Crow Creek (Georgetown Canyon mine). FMC Corp. and J. R. Simplot Co. at Pocatello have the largest elemental phosphorus and fertilizer production facilities, respectively, in the State, followed by Monsanto Co. and El Paso Natural Gas Products Co. (formerly Central Farmers Fertilizer Co.). The only other major phosphate processing plant in the State is the phosphoric acid and phosphate fertilizer complex at Kellogg operated by the Bunker Hill Co. In 1963 a plant was constructed and put on line at Monsanto, Idaho, to recover vanadium from ferrophosphorus produced by electric furnace operations in the area. El Paso Natural Gas Products Co. completed construction of a fertilizer and phosphoric acid plant near Conda in 1965. There is a small fertilizer plant producing phosphate fertilizers for local consumption in Soda Springs.

Recovery of rare earth elements (REE) from coal-related resources has recently received significant interest due to supply concerns and their key roles in critical industries and defense-related technologies. An integrated flowsheet consisting of sorting, crushing/grinding, physical separation, acid leaching, solvent extraction, and selective precipitation was designed to achieve continuous production of rare earth products from various coal-related resources such as coarse refuse and acid mine drainage. A pilot plant was constructed that enabled continuous testing of the circuitry on a range of different coal-based feedstocks. Despite achieving significant success in producing high-grade rare earth oxide products, low REE recovery values and high operational costs necessitated a re-evaluation of the process flowsheet. This article describes the circuitry improvements that were based on both laboratory and pilot plant test results. Roasting as a pre-leach treatment was found to significantly improve the leaching rate and overall REE recovery values. After roasting West Kentucky No. 13 and Fire Clay coal refuse materials at 600 °C, REE recovery increased by 60 and 40 absolute percentage points, respectively. Rare earth concentration in the pregnant leachate solution (PLS) was increased to around 700 ppm prior to solvent extraction using a staged precipitation method. REEs in the precipitate were re-dissolved, purified, and extracted from the PLS using solvent extraction and selective precipitation to values of around 80%. As a result of the improvements, chemical consumption in the acid leaching and solvent extraction processes was significantly reduced. A techno-economical assessment of the improved flowsheet indicated significant commercialization potential.

Social licence to operate is becoming part of a mining company’s DNA in the same way as health and safety. Consequently, mining companies are receiving increasing pressure from their shareholders to ensure that they add enduring value to the local communities in which they operate. Apart from the shareholders, a company has responsibility to suppliers, customers, employees, the government and the community, which means under the social responsibility model they must be accountable to the other stakeholders. External and internal challenges in mining are increasing the difficulty and complexity of mines to operate. The external mining environment has a big impact on mining operations and is driving matters such as the focus on safety, responsible mining and resource management, sustainability issues, profitability and productivity. Considering this, it is expected that the widespread implementation of Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) related practices across the mining industry in the next ten years will increase, not just for the big players but for juniors as well. Companies, investors, governments and insurers who fail to act on ESG matters are to likely face greater risks. Demonstrating leadership in ESG will ultimately become a differentiating factor and market participants have much to gain from embracing ESG stewardship as part of their competitive advantage. Stock Exchanges have an important role to play in advancing sustainability in the capital markets. It is for this reason that the Sustainable Stock Exchanges (SSE) initiative was founded to serve as a global platform for exploring how exchanges can enhance performance on ESG issues and encourage sustainable investment. The SSE initiative provides an effective platform for dialogue between the United Nations, stock exchanges, investors, companies and regulators in the mining industry. The paper will explain why ESG reporting is crucial for the survival of a mining company and how the lack of transparency could be detrimental to its public image and shareholder relations. The paper will also identify bodies that regulate ESG reporting, as well as the available tools that provide guidelines on reporting ESG matters. Key ESG reporting parameters (at a global scale) will also be highlighted.

Shotcrete is a key initial rock support component used in underground mining and civil projects. The strength of shotcrete plays a vital role in providing and deciding the support adequacy. The strength of shotcrete is evaluated by its uniaxial compressive strength (UCS) test that is usually conducted on extracted core samples. Shotcrete cores are commonly extracted from the test panels along the direction of its application; thus, its strength perpendicular to the direction of application is often neglected. The true bearing strength of shotcrete is thereby ignored despite the fact that higher stresses act normal to the direction of its application. Although the anisotropic behavior of shotcrete is well reported, no study has reported extensive testing of this scale and nature. This study reports extensive testing of shotcrete cores extracted from tunnels of a mega hydroelectric project in Pakistan. The study reports 7- and 28-days strength tests of shotcrete cores. The research also investigates the anisotropic behavior of steel fiber reinforced shotcrete and suggests that shotcrete exhibits higher strength perpendicular to the direction of its application.

Strain (work)-hardening in tensile tests were examined for low carbon steels with various ferrite grain sizes ranged from 0.4µm to 16µm. The steels had microstructures composed of ferrite grains and dispersed cementite particles. They were fabricated through warm caliber rolling with an accumulative area reduction of 93%. Strain-hardening rate at a given strain increased with an increase in volume fraction of cementite particles. The balance of yield strength and uniform elongation for ultrafine-grained structures could be improved by the dispersion of cementite particles. Effects of the cementite dispersion and the ferrite grain size on the strain-hardening rate can be roughly explained by the work-hardening model with GN-dislocation density. Strain-hardening design using dispersed cementites was proved to be effective in controlling ductility of the ultrafine-grained steels.

Despite numerous empirical, numerical, and hybrid studies conducted on the subject of coal rib failure, mine fatalities related to rib failures continue to occur at around 1.5 per year between 2009 and 2021. To date, a standard methodology for the design of coal rib supports that can accommodate the wide range of unique conditions found in coal mines in the USA has not been developed, forcing mine operators to rely on the trial-and-error process or industrial legacy practices for the design of coal rib support patterns. In this study, to better understand the support systems’ effectiveness, various rib bolting scenarios were investigated. A coal mass constitutive model is implemented to a distinct element method (DEM) code, and rib factor-of-safety (RibFOS) analyses were performed by applying strength-reduction for the coal matrix and explicitly modeled face cleats. Ribs with various overburden depths and mining heights composed of solid Banded-Bright coal (BBC) were considered in this study. Different scenarios such as rib bolt length and the number of bolts were studied to quantify the effect of primary rib support density on rib stability. As a result of the unsupported coal rib analyses, a decaying exponential relationship is proposed between the mining height-overburden depth and the RibFOS. The developed coal rib models clearly show the coal-rib bolt interaction and illustrate how the addition of rib bolts restricts the movement of the coal rib. The results reveal that the strength reduction method in DEM code with the coal-mass model can aid in the development of practical primary support charts, which can help in the rib support design process. In addition, an unsupported RibFOS cutoff is proposed, beyond which the addition of primary support cannot stabilize the failed rib structure.

Hydrogen reduction of cobalt sulfide (Co9S8) was experimentally investigated in the temperature range 813-1053 K. The results revealed that the reaction kinetics can be described by the shrinking core mod¬el in chemical control regime at low temperatures, it is of first order with respect to hydrogen concentration, and the reaction activation energy is 67.4 kJ/mol. The SEM second electron images of the samples before and after experiments showed that the swelling of the sample above 973 K is due to the formation of metallic cobalt whiskers.

During shallow tunneling in an urban environment, deposits or pockets of saturated soil or fractured, weathered rock are often encountered. Under such conditions, special problems with tunnel support, underpinning of structures adjacent to the tunneling, and/or flow of groundwater into the tunnel occur. If the ground conditions are appropriate, i.e., the soil is sandy, silty or fissured, or the rock is weathered or fractured, the solution to these tunneling problems may be chemical stabilization of the ground. Injection stabilization as an aid to tunneling is practiced extensively in Europe and its use is increasing in the U.S. The advantages of this technique over conventional solutions can be substantial in terms of cost and time, especially in mechanized tunnel boring where even a small zone of soft ground can bring the tunneling to a complete halt. In this paper European practice in using chemical ground stabilization for urban tunneling will be reviewed. In contrast to previous papers which have dealt with specific applications (1,5,8,9) this paper will broadly cover the subject, addressing itself to grouting techniques, costs, the reasons for grouting, philosophy of the users towards grouting, design of grouting solutions (or lack thereof) and methods of quality control. Differences with U.S. grouting practice are also noted. The information presented is derived from several visits to Europe, discussions with European and U.S. grouting personnel, and the available literature (2). The author's most recent European trip was made under the auspices of the U.S. Department of Transportation in conjunction with a research study being performed at Stanford University; a detailed report of this visit is available in reference (6).

Classification system efficiency (CSE) is a simple, powerful metric that provides a comprehensive measure of classification system performance. CSE directly quantifies the amount of coarse solids in the mill, and as a result, also directly quantifies the percentage of mill power being used effectively. In this manner, it is an effective, practical grinding energy efficiency metric.Three independent variables drive CSE: circulating load ratio, sharpness of classification, and classifier bypass. Due to practical downstream constrains on per cent solids, improvements realised by increasing circulating load reach diminishing returns as sharpness of classification and bypass deteriorate in the most commonly used classification device, the hydrocyclone. This combination of effects leads to the use of CSE, and its relationship to operational economics, as an objective circuit optimisation criterion.Its simplicity in measurement makes CSE a useful tool for the plant metallurgist, and it is not subject to a great amount of experimental error. CSE provides the plant operator a fast, simple, and effective means to evaluate the performance of the plant classification system. Improvements in CSE relate directly to circuit throughput and energy efficiency. Although the Bureau of Mines has thus far made no large-scale experiments with oil shales, and the feasibility of the commercial manufacture of shale-oil products suited to present market requirements has not been demonstrated, there is ample reason to believe that these products will eventually supplement the more commonly used petroleum products and give equally good service. In 1919 the bureau, in cooperation with the Department of Metallurgical Research, University of Utah, began investigating the oil shales of the United States to obtain detailed information on their value. The States of Colorado and Indiana also cooperated through their State universities, in which research laboratories were organized to assist in carrying on the oil-shale studies planned and directed by the bureau. As a result of these studies much information is now available concerning laboratory methods of producing the greatest yields of the best products from oil shale. In order to study the principles that govern the retorting of oil shales and to test the oils produced, it has been necessary to develop and standardize reliable apparatus and methods for distilling shale, and to adapt to the testing of shale oils some of the methods the Bureau of Mines uses for testing petroleum. The methods employed by the Scottish shale-oil manufacturers were also studied, but most of them have been superseded by those described in this bulletin, which give more comprehensive and accurate results and employ more convenient apparatus. This paper is presented, therefore, as a manual of apparatus and methods that the bureau has developed for work on oil shale and found satisfactory for routine tests and for research. Explanation and discussion of the principles underlying the methods of testing are included wherever necessary for a clearer understanding.

The mechanism by which age-hardening takes .place is still not completely understood. The principal theories range from the extreme of "precipitaiion-hardening" to that of "order-hardening," with many intermediate gradations. In the hope of obtaining new data on which to base a choice among the many theories, the authors have made electron micrographs of formvar replicas taken from metallic specimens at various stages of age-hardening. The results so obtained on an alloy of 2 per cent beryllium in copper and one of 20 per cent molybdenum in iron will be described in the following pages, as well as the technique used in preparing the replicas. Preparation of Formvae. Replicas of Metallic Specimens This section is concerned with the techniques that have roved successful in preparing formvar replicas for studying the microstructure of metals with the electron microscope. Because of its simplicity and accuracy, the formvar replica1 method developed in the General Electric Research Laboratory has been used exclusively, since it is much simpler than the silica replica method of Heidenreich and Peck2 and produces as good results. The formvar method to be described requires a technique acquired only by practice, and no foolproof set of rules can be given. it is a rapid method and a replica can be obtained in less than five minutes under favorable conditions. This does not mean that perfect replicas can be produced every five minutes, but rather that one can well afford to take several strippings* in order to produce a replica of high quality. The metallographic technique required for replica work—very fine polishing and etching with very dilute solutions—is described here. It can be said, in general, that almost any surface that has been carefully prepared for a photomicrograph at 1000 or more diameters can be used to obtain a replica for the electron microscope. Preparation of Metallographic Specimens The preparation of the metallographic specimens is somewhat more exacting than that usually given to samples to be used for inspection under the light microscope. After much experimentation, it was concluded that the best method consists in polishing the metal through to the coarse cloth, then etching and repolishing on final cloth until the layer of distorted metal is removed. Land use is the single most important element affecting the quality of our physical environment. .The minerals industry is a user of land and by its very nature, directly affects the landscape. Mining is a very visible activity. Producers of sand and gravel, crushed stone, clay, cement and lime operate right at the interface of the public. These production sites must be located near population centers. People are more travel oriented than years ago and through use of the expanded interstate highway system visit remote and little-visited areas. They visit communities on their vacations, places they enjoy on weekends and places they drive past on business trips. Although not residents of these localities, they have a strong interest in changes that occur in the landscape. As a result, the public has a greater concern today about mining and its use of land. From 1930 through 1971, the minerals industry used 3.65 million acres, or 0.16 percent of the land mass in the United States (4)2/. Of the total 3.65 million acres utilized, about 59 percent was accounted for by the area of excavation, 20 percent by disposal of overburden and other mine wastes from surface mining, 13 percent by disposal of mill or processing wastes, and 5 percent by disposal of underground mine wastes; the remaining 3 percent was subsided or disturbed as a result of underground workings. Nonmetallic minerals and fossil fuels each accounted for 43 percent of surface land used during 1930-71; the metal mining industry utilized the remaining 14 percent.
