The Federal Bureau of Mines participated with the National Aeronautics and Space Administration and Martin Marietta Aerospace in developing, building, and testing a portable X-ray fluorescence spectrometer for use as an analyzer in mineral-resource investigative work. The prototype battery-powered spectrometer, measuring I1 by 12 by 5 inches and weighing only about 15 pounds, was designed specifically for field use. The spectrometer has two gas-proportional counters and two radioactive sources, 109Cd and 55Fe. Preliminary field and laboratory tests on rock specimens and rock pulps have demonstrated the capability of the spectrometer to detect 33 elements, to date. Characteristics of the system present some limitations, however, and further improvements are recommended.

For the next few minutes, I will be discussing a product and category that many people laughed at for years. The product is cat box filiers or commonly referred to by the brand name KITTY LITTER. This product was introduced in 1947 by Ed Lowe using the name KITTY LITTER. From 1947 to 1964 the product was sold mainly through pet shops. Starting in 1964, the grocery trade began to carry cat litters. From that point, the cate gory began a solid growth trend. Particularly in the '7O's, cat litter has experienced the same kind of explosive growth that has characterized the entire pet market. For example, in the twelve months ending 9/21/79, cat litter unit volume grew by 15% versus the previous twelve months. The basis for this explosive growth is easy to comprehend. The cat population itself is rapidly expanding, reflecting the changing life- styles of Americans. As famiiies grow smaller, there is room for a pet. As apartment and con dominim living shrinks living space, a cat fills the human need for animal companionship more efficiently. Table I illustrates current cat litter market factors and projects major trends into the future to conclude that the cat litter market will equal $205MM in 1985. With this dynamic growth defined, it was imperative that a company such as Lowe's that was totally devoted to the commodity-priced products, evaluate the opportunities for added- value product differentiation. This process was started approximately four years ago with a search for new cat litter products and other new product opportunities.

The wear resistance of an alloy in heavy mill liner sections may be quite different from that of the same alloy in small balls and other light sections. This fact was established by means of a well standardized laboratory test that was validated for ball mill service. The salient properties of mill liner alloys, including austenitic manganese steels, medium alloy hardenable steels, and abrasion resistance cast irons are described, critically compared, and quantitatively ranked in terms of mill liner service. Where they are tough enough the high-chromium and other martensitic cast irons (e.g. Ni-Hard) promise maximum economy, but their section sensitivity is a limitation. To overcome this an extensive research program studied over a hundred experimental alloys, ranking them for heavy section abrasion resistance by means of the laboratory test. Computer analysis of the results provided a parabolic formula in terms of composition, the apexes of the parabolas providing optimum wear resistance. From the extensive family of parabolas one apex was selected for intensive study in experimental liners, pilot plant production, development of quality controls, and finally full scale production. This is a 19% chromium iron critically alloyed with nickel and molybdenum and hardened by heat treatment. It has excellent resistance to various types of abrasion, but its chief advantage is in heavy mill liner sections, where it has about 25% better abrasion resistance than the best of the quality controlled chilled Ni-Hards. It is also tougher. After production problems were solved, a number of ball and rod mill tests were arranged on a guaranteed performance basis. Two of these, representing about 138,000 pounds of mill liner castings, have recently confirmed in service the superiority that was predicted by the laboratory tests.

Quality assurance and quality control (or QAQC) plays a key role in safeguarding the level of confidence of the data generated during mineral exploration and mine development, and is also part of the reporting code requirements for resource estimation and reporting, as well as mining investment. Implementation of good policies and working protocols in quality management will result in the generation of reliable information, which is critical for decision-making on the future of the mining project. The use of certified reference materials, i.e., standard, blank, and duplicate samples, proves effective and efficient for ensuring the level of data confidence in terms of precision, accuracy, and sample contamination. This is well demonstrated by the practice of QC in the exploration programme for the chrysotile tailings storage facilities of Havelock Mine, using 1254 samples from 53 drill-holes. Different statistical tools were applied to analyse the assay results from these samples. The outcome substantiates that the QC practice established during the Havelock exploration project is aligned to best practice guidelines in the industry. The resource delineated indicates that the tailings material at Havelock could potentially become a significant source of supply to the global magnesium market.

The objective of this study was to determine if significant relationships exist between coal mine roof stability and the time roof is left unsupported. Additional factors such as geology, opening geometry, and mining methods were also studied: to determine their relative influence on mine roof stability. The results of the study indicate that geologic factors such as shear zones (either joints or faults) and changes in roof rock lithology were the principal factors governing mine roof stability. The time lapse factor appeared to be of critical importance when poor mine roof conditions are encountered. The study pointed up the need for improved and permissible rock mechanics instrumentation for use in coal mine investigations.

A synthesis of reported All-In Sustaining Costs (AISC) for 57 Australian gold mines in the period 2014–2016 reveals for the first time the clear influence of grade upon cost performance, most evident in gold-only underground mines. Past syntheses of costs on a single quarter basis have viewed grade as potentially subordinate to other factors such as production scale, mine geometry, mineralisation style and a combination of other mining-related costs. Better understanding of the grade to cost relationship on both an individual mine and whole-of-portfolio portfolio basis is needed. Insight into the roles and trade-offs between other cost-determining factors will aid the future sustainability of the gold mining sector in Australia and assist in targeting prospects for future resource growth and development. While the overall trend is toward higher-grade mines displaying lower costs and vice versa, the grade to cost functions appear radically different between mines based on time-series data. The median cost of Australian gold production in the final quarter of 2016 was A$1081/oz. The threshold for lowest cost quartile production was A$965/oz. Underground production now dominates Australian gold output – with 71 per cent of ounces originating from operations that are either entirely underground or hybrid pit/underground mines. Scale economies are evident, with smaller mines predominately among the higher cost producers. For mines of equal grade, open pit mines are lower cost than underground operations. Reserves are modest, with a median mine life for underground operations of 4.7 years based on current production rates. Reserve additions at mines are likely constrained not only by the finite nature of mineralisation at each mine but also by the geometrical difficulty of accessing suitable drilling locations to test for reserve extensions.CITATION:Ulrich, S, Trench, A and Hagemann, S, 2017. The aim of this study is to present hazard classifications of location, type, and causes of accidents in Turkish coal-extracting industries using Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP). In this study, fatal mine accidents were analyzed by pairwise comparison and weighting, and the most important hazards were identified by determining the effective main and sub-criteria among location, type, and causes of accidents. For this purpose, 1st, 2nd, and 3rd level hazards consisting of location, type, and causes of accident were determined by using the data of fatal mine accidents in underground and open-pit coal mining in Turkey between the years of 2010 and 2020. And then the data were categorized, and each category was prioritized using the AHP technique. According to the weights calculated by AHP, the most dangerous main criteria at 1st level hazards in underground coal mining is ventilation operations (0.363), while the most dangerous sub-criterion at 2nd level hazards is firedamp explosions and other gas accidents (0.409). On the other hand, in open-pit coal mining, the most dangerous main criteria at 1st level hazards are slopes and benches (0.575), while the most dangerous sub-criterion at 2nd level hazards are landslides (0.429).

The 17th National First-Aid and Mine Rescue Contest was held in the Kentucky Fair and Exposition Center, Louisville, Ky., October 2, 3, and 4, 1957. The meet was under the auspices of the Federal Bureau of Mines and the Joseph A. Holmes Safety Association, in cooperation with the National Coal Association, United Mine Workers of America, State mining departments, local mining institutes, and coal operators' associations. The Arrangements Committee, as authorized by the General Committee, made all the necessary arrangements for conducting the 1957 contest. Members of the Arrangements Committee were: Harry Gandy, Jr. (chairman), National Coal Association; James B. Benson, Southern Coal Producers' Association; Charles Ferguson, United Mine Workers of America; George C. Trevorrow, Bituminous Coal Operators' Association; and James Westfield, Federal Bureau of Mines.

Introduction Despite the focus on the so-called "high-tech" and service components of the economy, the minerals industry in 1987 continued to provide the world the overwhelmingly dominant share of the total raw material supply for all manufacturing operations. And, in the form of fertilizers and other soil treatment materials, minerals also supplied indispensable raw materials to ensure continued high production of the agricultural and forestry sectors of the world's economy. Moreover, the role of minerals as a source of construction raw materials was essential to that sector. On the basis of preliminary and partial statistics on world output of crude mineral commodities, 1987 appears to have been a year of further recovery from the recessional years of 1981-1983. The value of world crude mineral industry production (all mineral commodities including fuels) apparently advanced about 5% to nearly $1.1 trillion in terms of constant 1983 dollars.' That is significantly above the recently revised 1986 level of nearly $1.05 trillion, but still considerably below the record-to-date high of $1.27 trillion set in 1980, as shown in Table 1. That growth in value took place despite relatively flat world oil prices - oil being the most important component of the aggregate, as it has been for decades. There is insufficient information available to assess the total value of processed mineral commodities (refined metals, refined oil, manufactured fertilizers and the like). But a figure of $2.6 trillion (constant 1983 dollars) would be a quite conservative estimate for those materials derived only from primary or newly mined materials. And an additional, as-yet-unestimated increment should be added for processed materials derived from secondary raw materials - scrap and other reclaimed substances. From a world trade viewpoint, minerals and mineral products dominate in terms of tonnage. For example, in 1985, on a weight basis, mineral commodities including fuels constituted more than 58% of all goods moving through the Suez Canal and 53% of all goods passing through the Panama Canal. These waterways cannot accommodate giant tankers and ore carriers. So an even larger share of total oceanic trade is composed of minerals and mineral products. Yet, in terms of value, the share of the total accounted for by these industrial essentials is much lower than that accounted for by other commodities, most notably sophisticated high-tech equipment and other goods with a relatively high per-pound value. Worldwide data on the value of mineral export trade for 1987 is so incomplete at this writing that it is impossible to assess that actual level. Indeed, the compilation of similar available data for 1986 covers only the exports of nations with developed market economies. In 1985, these countries accounted for only 67% of total world exports of all goods. They accounted for only 41% of world exports of major mineral commodities: crude nonmetals; metal ores, concentrates, and scrap; mineral fuels; nonferrous metals excluding gold; and iron and steel. For these developed-market-economy countries, the value of exports of these major mineral commodities declined by more than 10% between 1985 and 1986. In 1991, the USBM (U. S. Bureau of Mines) evaluated the mineral resources of the 174,550-acre Bear Creek-Poker Peak area. Located 40 air miles east from Idaho Falls, ID, the study area is in the Caribou National Forest but is mostly administered by Targhee National Forest. USBM personnel mapped and sampled mines, prospects, and mineralized sites in and near the study area. Five types of mineral occurrences were identified in the study area: phosphate, limestone and travertine, placer gold, coal and uranium (the latter contained in the coal), and oil and gas. The study area has a high potential for oil and gas; evaluation of these commodities were beyond the scope of this study.

This paper describes research conducted under the BuMines's Advancing Metal and Nonmetal Mining Technology Program, a major element being the application of new and improved technology to shaft design in deep underground vein-type mines. Two basic design parameters considered in shaft planning are configuration (shape) and ground support. The most common shapes are circular and rectangular. Ground support systems include concrete, timber sets, steel sets, rock bolts, and steel liners. The inherent advantages and/or disadvantages of various shaft designs such as ventilation and fire resistance, flexibility and ground support characteristics are well known. Circular concrete-lined shafts have minimal resistance to air flora and are virtually fireproof, an important consideration in deep hot mines. However, concrete does not yield significantly, and failure conditions and misalignment cannot be easily repaired. Timber-supported rectangular shafts predominate in the Coons d'Alene Mining District with its highly stressed and frequently heavy ground. The sets can be relieved and reblocked when out of alignment. However, the constant maintenance and repair requirements result in exposure to an inherently dangerous working environment combined with excessive operating costs. Obviously a dilemma exists--a circular, concrete-lined opening has many desirable features, provided it is strong enough to withstand the stresses involved. Rectangular, timber supported shafts have proven adequate in the Coeur d'Alenes; however, the implication of increased maintenance and repair requirements on ever-deepening shafts in this district and other similar areas will be an important design consideration in the future. This paper, then, presents shaft-configuration and ground-support guidelines to help remove some of the uncertainty concerning the stresses to be encountered in typical deep vein mining areas.

McDermitt Mine is located in northern Humboldt County, Nevada, approximately 5 miles south of the Orgeon-Nevada line (Figure I), within the Opalite Mining District. The operation is a joint venture between Placer Amex Inc., San Francisco, and Mineral Exploration Company Ltd., a limited partnership. The McDermitt orebody possesses a discontinuous, gently dipping blanket-like form within 150 feet of the surface over an area 2200 by 2500 feet. The ore zone averages 20 feet in thickness. The ore minerals consist of cinnabar (HgS) and corderoite (Hg3S2C12) deposited parallel to bedding within argillized, Miocene age, tuffaceous lacustrine sediments. Exploration indicates reserves of approximately 3,000,000 tons ore at a grade of 10 pounds mercury per ton (0.5%) An open pit mining operation utilizing scrapers and bulldozers supplies a concentrator with 700 tons of ore per day. The milling operation consists of autogenous grinding, flotation concentration, concentrate dewatering, and tailing disposal, with a design capacity of 100 tons per hour. The furnace section consists of a concentrate filter, vertical six hearth furnace, mercury condensing system, and exhaust gas scrubbing systems. It has a design capacity of 1000 pounds of dry concentrate per hour. The McDermitt orebody is situated about 2000 feet north of the Cordero Mine which, with adjacent properties, produced over 115,000 flasks (76 pounds per flask) mercury from 1941 to 1972' Two other major mercury producers in the district have been the Bretz and Opalite Mines, located in southern Malheur County, Oregon, within 5 miles of the Oregon-Nevada line. Bretz and Opalite have produced about 14,800 and 12,370 flasks mercury respectively, from 1926 to 1965.1/

Butler Taconite, operated by the Hanna Mining Company, is an Iron ore pelletizing operation that is located on the Western end of the Mesabi Iron Range in Northeastern Minnesota. The operation mines low-grade taconite ore and through primary crushing, two stage grinding, magnetic separation, agglomerating and indurating, produces 2.6 million annual tons of high quality, 66% iron pellets. Mining and stripping is done with 13 - M100 trucks and 5 - 12 cu. yd. shovels. The operating processes in the concentrator and pellet plant are primarily con¬trolled through a centralized control room and monitored by a PDP l140 computer. During 1969 and 1970, a re-organization of the Company took place. Through this re-organization, each mine unit was analyzed and studied to determine the proper staffing of the internal departments. At this time, it was decided to continue with further detailed studies of the Maintenance Department with the intent to reduce maintenance costs. Maintenance costs at the time of the re-organization were 38.6% of the total mine operating cost. The preliminary study indicated that the Maintenance Department had a system of maintenance, as a matter of fact, it had a separate system in each sub-maintenance division and in some of the sub-divisions each foreman had a system of his own. Therefore, from the data collected, it was decided to develop one system of maintenance that could be utilized throughout the entire operation. To determine the type of system suitable to all phases of the operation, detailed time and method studies were conducted. All types of maintenance tasks performed at the operation were studied. The data collected was analyzed and the recommended improved methods were reviewed with the Maintenance Superintendent and his staff. The new improved methods that were accepted as feasible, were introduced into the system immediately.

Specialized sulfur concretes were developed by the Federal Bureau of Mines as a result of research for the beneficial utilization of sulfur in construction materials. Materials were developed for use in acid and salt corrosive environments where portland cement concrete has been found to deteriorate. Because the mineral aggregates also come into contact with the corrosive media, concretes were developed utilizing both limestone and quartz aggregates. The sulfur binder used with both aggregates was modified by reaction with 5 pct dicyclopentadiene to improve product durability. Sulfur quartz aggregate concrete was found to have moderately high strength characteristics (6,000 psi compressive) and was extremely resistant to chemical attack by both acid and salt solutions. Sulfur limestone aggregate concrete exhibited very high strength characteristics (9,000 psi compressive) and was extremely resistant to chemical attack of salt solutions. Both types of concretes maintained their strength and integrity after long-term testing in acid and salt solutions and exhibited considerable resistance to damage by the action of freezing and thawing. Potential uses include leach tanks, electrolytic cells, thickeners, bridge decking, industrial flooring, pipe, and tile.

BEGINNING Thursday, July 16, the National Broadcasting Co. is broadcasting from 6:30 to 6:45 p.m., over its nationwide network and possibly also by short wave a series of eleven radio programs dealing with the contributions of engineers to the prosecution of the war. The series is being arranged and sponsored by a committee of representatives of the national engineering societies, R. L. Sackett, chairman. The committee began its deliberations before Pearl Harbor and had scripts under way on blackouts, bombs, and damage to structures. The declaration of war emphasized the importance of the proposed radio program. The National Broadcasting Co. and the Office of Civilian Defense enthusiastically endorsed the committee's proposal and have been generous in their help and approval of scripts so far submitted. Controversial matters are included in the broadcasts and changes will be made when requested by O.C.D. up to the minute that a program goes on the air. In this way the latest and authoritative information will be given.

Rhenium is primarily recovered as a by-product from molybdenum roasting circuits. However, rhenium is also present in copper heap leach solutions at very low concentrations and represents a potential new rhenium source. Freeport-McMoRan Copper & Gold has developed a new process using carbon adsorption followed by ion exchange or solvent extraction to concentrate rhenium from less than 1 ppm to 15 g/L. The product is compatible as a feed to an existing rhenium processing plant. A pilot plant operated at Freeport-McMoRan?s Sierrita mine has demonstrated the technical and financial feasibility of this new process.

Introduction For the past year and a half, the mill of Cochenour Willans Gold Mines, Limited, McKenzie Island, Ontario has been roasting arsenopyrite-gold concentrates, prior to cyanidation, by means of a roaster employing techniques that are new and novel. The roaster is known as the Dorrco 'fluo-solids reactor', and the technique as 'fluidization'. The reactor has demonstrated its ability to roast a flotation concentrate containing arsenopyrite, pyrite, stibnite, small quantities of other sulphides, and some lime silicates and carbonates, yielding a calcine consisting mainly of porous iron oxide, plus the gold values. This calcine is readily amenable to cyanidation. Bulk shipments of concentrates to a distant custom smelter, as practised prior to this installation, has thus been eliminated, with appreciable savings in smelting charges, freight costs, and interest losses during shipment and smelting. This is the pioneer installation of fluo-solids roasting at a Canadian mill and up to the present performance results have not been published. It is the purpose of this paper to present the information now available for the benefit of other millmen who may be confronted with identical or similar problems to those encountered and solved at Cochenour Willans.

In a Bureau of Mines investigation of the dynamic compaction of mine hydraulic backfills, two basic forms of mechanical vibration inducers were used and compared for effectiveness of compaction. Internal compaction, using concrete probe vibrators of various sizes, and external compaction, using plate vibrators} were studied and evaluated for use in underground stopes. An aluminum plate, which was light and displaced sufficient volume to remain afloat in fluid fill, and a steel plate were both used in the external compaction tests. Efficiency of compaction was better in studies conducted with internal probe vibrators. Tests were conducted in an underground backfilled stope with three different-sized probe vibrators (2-, 4-, and 6-inch-diameter) to determine an approximate area of influence. Results showed the areas of influence to be approximately 3, 4, and 5 feet in diameter, respectively, for the three different probes. Physical properties of hydraulic slurries were determined; preferred grain-size distributions, water exudation properties, and water contents of hydraulic slurries are reported. The best compaction results were obtained with moderately well-graded, fully saturated backfills, with slow rates of water exudation, which were capable of remaining in a semifluid state during the compaction process.
