The original flotation reagents were certain oils selected for a combination of properties that occurred fortuitously. It was recognized quite early in the study of flotation mechanism that, in order to function, an oil must have an active group-one that differs from the remainder of the molecule in its affinity for water or the mineral particle. Wark4 gives credit for recognition of this elementary chemical principle to the senior author of this report.5 However, it was soon found that simple hydrocarbons could not be used as flotation reagents and that two of the functions, which were combined in the early flotation oils such as pine and eucalyptus, could be obtained in separate compounds and their relative intensity controlled to advantage. These two functions were called collecting and frothing.

This paper will cover a back up roll bearing technological upgrade, being implemented at the TERNIUM SIDERAR Hot Strip Mill (HSM), in San Nicolas, Buenos Aires, Argentina. This change was motivated by increased operating loads, which caused the original bearings to be outside the designed bearing rating. The problems were first identified by bearing seizures in some stands, and later followed by cracks forming in the back up roll neck areas due to fatigue and overload. MORGOIL engineers worked together with TERNIUM SIDERAR engineers in analysing the problem and to upgrade the mill with the newest and most economical technology. The upgrade consisted of changing the bearings to the latest generation MORGOIL bearing: the KLX, which within the same space, increases bearing capacity around 25%. This was accomplished re-utilizing all chocks. The new bearing allowed for a re-design of the geometry of the back up roll neck, making it much stiffer than the original design, and eliminating fatigue failures. In addition, an upgrade to hydraulic mounting and dismounting using the MORGOIL® HB lock was also implemented, as well as changing to the newest MORGOIL® HD seals. With the MORGOIL® KLX® upgrade, TERNIUM SIDERAR HSM increased load capacity, allowing them to roll products that were not even considered decades ago. Both older oil film bearings and roller bearing mills have been successfully upgraded while reusing existing chocks and in many cases rolls. Solutions are customized to the customer’s equipment and goals.

THE numerous theories of hardening which have been advanced in recent years are all satisfactory in accounting for some of the phenomena observed in hardening metals, but none so far presented account for all of the facts observed. Some years ago one of the authors, R. S. Dean,' presented a theory to account for some of the properties accompanying work hardening. The present paper develops this theory further in the light of recent experimental work and extends it to other forms of hardening. Many of the ideas included have come from the writings and personally communicated thoughts of others. We have attempted to give proper credit in every case, but it is possible that we have not always done so. As an historical basis it is desirable here to review very briefly the hardening theories which have been current. The first comprehensive theory of work-hardening phenomena was due to Sir George Beilby.2 He contributed the idea that with cold work part of the structure of the metal was rendered amorphous and that-it was to this amorphous material that the cold-worked metal owed its difference in properties. According to Beilby's theory this amorphous material was a supercooled liquid and, therefore, had the characteristics of a vitreous material. That such a theory is not capable of explaining the property changes in metals has been repeatedly pointed out. This theory also allowed a slip to take place only once on a given plane, which, as has been pointed out by Jeffries and Archer13 is not consistent with the observed length of an, individual slip and the amount of elongation which can be obtained by wire drawing. The modifications, which have been proposed to this hypothesis to make it coincide with the experimental facts, have to a considerable extent robbed the theory of its clean-cut characteristics. This report presents the results of a statistical analysis of a limited amount of sample and assay data from a production panel in an open - pit phosphate mine in the Phosphoria formation in Idaho . A frequency distribution analysis is shown for the assays , sample interval lengths , and products of assay and sample interval length for the millshale , furnace - shale , and main phosphate beds . Correlation techniques were used to show the relationships between assays and sample interval lengths . Within- drill - hole and between - drill - hole correlation were also examined as a means of predicting grade trends in the ore . Simulation methods , utilizing a digital computer , were used to establish assay populations that could be used for estimating grade of ore , cutoff grades , and deposit or bed identification .

A morfologia, dimensões e composição química de tribocamadas são fortemente dependentes das pressões e temperaturas existentes no contato e oriundas das reações das superfícies entre si, com a atmosfera, com os lubrificantes e contaminantes presentes no contato. No presente artigo foi analisada a formação de tribocamadas em pares DLCaço inoxidável testados por 180, 500, 1000 e 2500 horas em atmosfera de gás refrigerante R134a sem a presença de óleo lubrificante. A caracterização foi realizada por microscopia eletrônica de varredura espectroscopia de energia dispersiva (MEV-EDS) (morfologia e composição química) e interferometria ótica de luz branca (dimensões). Nas análises por MEV-EDS foram identificadas tribocamadas que se apresentaram mais pronunciadas nas superfícies do aço inoxidável sendo as mesmas oriundas de transferências mútuas entre os pares tribológicos bem como oxidação. A espessura das tribocamadas, por sua vez variou de 100 a 500 nm. Os resultados revelam que as tribocamadas são quimicamente estáveis e que suas espessuras não variam significativamente após mil horas de ensaio.

"Gas adsorption in coal is an exothermic and physical process. Temperature might change during the dynamical process. In order to get the temperature variation of gas adsorption process, the experiment system which can test the temperature variation and analyze the thermal effect was established. Gas adsorption experiments under different conditions were done by using the test system. The results show that temperature increases during the adsorption process. It is an exothermic reaction process. Also, the temperature variation and the variation gradient increase with the increasing of equilibrium pressure. The temperature variation value is smaller if the experiment temperature is higher. The paper will provide basic experimental data for explaining gas adsorption mechanism better.INTRODUCTIONChina is the largest coal producer in the world while it also has the most serious coal mine disasters. According to the statistics, there are nearly a thousand coal mines in China including more than 110 the key state-owned mines risking to happen coal and gas outburst. Hundreds of coal and gas outburst occur each year which often causes serious casualties and economic losses (State Administration of Work Safety, 2007). With the continuing exploitation of the coal resources, the depth of the Chinese coal mines increases about 100 meters every year which causes the situation of gas accident becoming more and more serious (Xie et al., 2006).At present, the real mechanism of gas adsorption, desorption and the diffusion process in coal and the influence factor of it are not so clear. And because of the limit of prediction method and the technological level caused gas accident prevention theory and technology not so valid."

Finite-element,, mathematical models that solve LaPlace's and Richard's equations numerically were used to locate the phreatic surface within tailings pond embankments and to define the subsurface flow of water from the pond. Both must be known to design structurally and environmentally safe tailings dams. The permeability distribution within and beneath the embankment, the fluid potential values upgradient and downgradient from the embankment, and the geometry and elevation of an approximately impermeable layer at some depth beneath the embankment were used as computer inputs in analyzing over a dozen finite-element models of tailings dams varying structurally from simple to complex. Results predicted with the finite-element model were confirmed with measurements in a laboratory model of a tailings pond and in the field. Of particular importance to the design of safe slopes, all data indicated that the phreatic surface within a tailings dam is concave upward, a configuration opposite that in most earth dams. The close correlation between predicted and experimental values confirmed the practicability of using the finite-element technique to design safe tailings dams.

"The five papers which follow, under the heading of ""Technology Transfer-Universities to Industry"", were originally presented at the 20th Annual CIM Conference of Metallurgists in Hamilton, Ontario. They are a unique group of papers, unique because each paper is concerned with applied research done wholly or partly in a university environment and then translated into industrial practice.Universities can rightly be regarded as one of our nation's greatest resources-a veritable storehouse of knowledge and expertise. Yet, too often, this resource is overlooked or, at best, sparingly used by Canadian industry. Of course, university-based research cannot supplant industry-based research, nor vice versa; each type of research activity has its proper role in the over-all process of technology development.University-based scientists are best equipped to conceptualize, innovate, determine viability of basic premises and to verify these at the bench or small pilot-plant level. Industry based scientists are best equipped to develop ""bench-scale"" innovations into mature manufacturing practices. Thus, university-based scientists and industry-based scientists do not compete with, but rather complement, each other. Active, relevant university research enhances industrial research provided good communication between the two ""solitudes"" is continually nurtured.Good communication between industry and university is a prime objective of CSIRA/ACRIS (Canadian Steel Industry Research Association /Association Canadienne pour la Recherches dans d'Industrie Siderurgique), The directors of CSIRA/ACRIS foster improved communication by making regular visits to universities, by sponsoring projects and by providing lists to professors of uncharted areas where basic research is needed. More can be done to improve communication between industry and university, and it is the intent of the Association to do more.The five papers sponsored by CSIRA/ACRIS are examples of good communication and healthy cooperation. It is interesting to note when reading these papers that the cooperation arose, in each instance, as a result of different circumstances. However, there is a common thread and it is personal acquaintanceship-the university scientist/professor and the industry investigator/manager knew each other prior to the initiation of the project."

While American scientific literature contains much information upon geologic conditions controlling the production of oil in Rumania, copper in Chile, and other fuel and metallic resources in many foreign countries, it is singularly lacking in data about the nonmetallics outside of the United States. Thus, though the United States is the outstanding market for European high-quality refined kaolin, and for the chinaware, porcelain, and other products of the European ceramics industries, American literature contains only the briefest references to the deposits from which the raw kaolin utilized is obtained. To the writer, to whom has come in the past year the opportunity of visiting a number of these deposits personally, they have proved of extreme interest both commercially and geologically. It is the latter phase that is discussed in this paper. The older and now largely crystalline rock areas of France, Germany, and other parts of western Europe contain numerous pegmatite dikes of which the upper portions have been subjected to surface weathering and kaolinization in much the same way as those of the eastern portion of the United States. Like the latter, the European pegmatite kaolins have long been known for their freedom from iron and other impurities offensive to the china and porcelain manufacturer. Unfortunately, they are also, like the American deposits, individually of small size and noted for their high costs of production. Deposits of sedimentary clay similar in many respects to the high-quality sedimentary kaolins of Georgia and South Carolina are known and worked, notably in southern Germany and in the Newton Abbott district of Devon and Dorset in England. In general, their relationship to the parent rock from which they were derived is more evident than in the United States and the individual deposits are of smaller areal extent and less regular in outline. While these deposits are of considerable economic importance they did not, because of their similarity to deposits in America, attract and hold the interest of the writer to the extent that several other types of deposits did. In cooperation with the Edison Electric Illuminating Co. of Boston, Mass., and the Boston Consolidated Gas Co., a survey has been conducted continuously since 1929 by the Bureau of Mines to determine the general hazards of combustible gases and vapors in manholes of the Edison Electric Illuminating Co. The New England Telephone & Telegraph Co. also has cooperated in the investigation, and tests have been made in its manholes since May 1, 1933. Yearly reports6/ on the results obtained since the beginning of the survey have been published. The method and procedure of conducting the survey in 1936 were the same as heretofore.

Solvay has developed several novel reagent innovations to improve separations in sulfide ore flotation and address major industry challenges. These innovations include: a) carbon management strategies to reduce the deleterious impact of organic carbon on flotation circuits; b) new collectors for heavily tarnished or oxidized Cu-Au ores; and c) a functionalized depressant for minimizing penalty elements in metal concentrates. Owing to their unique chemistries, these innovations exhibit a wide spectrum of rather unique properties that are quite in contrast to the traditionally used reagents. The chemistry, attributes, application, and advantages of these innovations are discussed in this paper based on laboratory, pilot, and plant results and observations for various ores

The U.S. Bureau of Mines has constructed a smoke chamber and developed sensitivity tests for smoke detectors. Response of ionization-and optical-type commercially available smoke detectors have been investigated. Six smoke detectors were measured with respect to visually obscuring smoke characterized by a corresponding optical density for smoldering and flaming coal combustion in the smoke chamber. It was determined that for one type of ionization smoke detector the alarm time was nearly equivalent to that of an odor monitor's alarm for smoldering coal combustion experiments and earlier for flaming coal combustion experiments. The experiments showed that an average CO concentration of 5 ppm corresponded to an optical density of 0.022 m-l for smoldering and flaming coal combustion. Two of the commercially available ionization-type smoke detectors were more responsive to flaming than smoldering coal combustion at an optical density of 0.022 m-l, whereas the optical smoke detectors showed the opposite trend. The responsive characteristics of the detectors evaluated with respect to known smoke conditions in the smoke chamber shows their potential for use as mine fire sensors or part of a mine atmospheric monitoring system to improve mine safety.

Nestes dias materiais ecológicos como compósitos com fibras naturais em matriz polimérica estão chamando a atenção de pesquisadores científicos, devido ao seu bom desempenho na substituição de materiais como madeira, polímeros à base de petróleo e outros. Neste trabalho foram avaliadas as propriedades de tração de compósitos de matriz epóxi reforçados com diferentes espécimes de fibras lignocelulósicas. Compósitos reforçados com até 30% em volume de fibras longas, contínuas e alinhadas de malva, sisal e bambu foram testados em uma máquina Instron a temperatura ambiente. A fratura foi analisada por SEM. Os resultados mostraram alterações significativas nas propriedades mecânicas com a quantidade dessas fibras. Estas propriedades mecânicas foram comparados com outros resultados em compósitos testados em ensaio de tração. A análise da fratura revelou uma fraca interação da interface fibra / matriz, o que poderia ser responsável por um maior desempenho de algumas propriedades.

Within recent years several mining companies have sent expeditions co the east end of Great Slave lake co determine the mineral possibilities of that area. Little was known of the geography of the region, and even less of the geology; and, not until Blancher's survey was made and the results published, was an accurate map of the lake available. Early explorers followed the Inconnu channel and the north shore of McLeod bay to Port Reliance, and, just prior to Blancher's survey, Hornby showed that the southern passage was feasible. Apparently, but few geologists have ? travelled through the country, for geological information is meager. In 1900, Robert Bell, of the Geological Survey, made a trip to Fort Reliance by way of the north shore of McLeod bay, and he gives a brief description of the geology. The present paper is the result of an expedition into this little-known region by Mr. Geo. M. Douglas and the writer in the summer of 1928. The south shore of Great Slave lake was followed to the east end of Tochatwi bay, and an extensive exploration was made of Kahochella and Pethei peninsulas. The prime object of the expedition was co determine the presence or absence of the copper-bearing Keweenawan basalts.

The mining of high-grade narrow vein deposits is a predominant field of activity in the precious metal sector. These types of deposits are located throughout the globe and have a significant presence in mining operations. The principle factor that has undermined the profitability and effectiveness of mining such ore zones is the substantial dilution that occurs when blasting with explosives during extraction. In order to minimise ore dilution, the thermal fragmentation mining method enables the operator to extract a narrow mineralised corridor, 30 cm to 1 m wide (according to the true width of the ore vein). By inserting a strong burner powered by diesel fuel and air into a pilot hole previously drilled directly into the vein, a thermal reaction occurs spalling the rock and enlarging the hole to 30 - 100 cm in diameter. This patented method produces highly concentrated ore, resulting in 400 - 500 per cent less dilution when compared to conventional mining methods. The mining method was conceived with the aim of mining ounces, not tonnes. This method of extraction, reduces the environmental impact of mining operations since much smaller quantities of rock are displaced, stockpiled, and treated using chemical agents. The fully mechanised equipment operated by a two-person team, maximises the effectiveness of skilled personnel, increases productivity, and reduces risks of injuries. Important economic benefits are generated for large- and small-scale mining operations alike. For large-scale operations, the mining method increases mining reserves, lowers the cost per ounce, and increases the total profitability of existing mine operations. The method also significantly lowers costs and risks of developing and mining small-scale deposits, requiring less investment capital, shortening the payback period, thus reducing the lending risk.  Combined with a small modular processing unit able to process between 100 - 300 tons per day, the method substantially lowers the financial break-even point for small-scale mining operations in a narrow vein environment. The company has been working with the technology at its Rocmec 1 mining site; results achieved and future developments are discussed.

During 2001 the Ridgeway Gold Mine, driven by company initiatives and recent NSW legislation (General Rule 2000), developed and implemented Major Hazard Management Plans to control significant hazards identified at the underground mine. The paper presents the objectives, issues, outcomes and process involved in the development and implementation of the plans at Ridgeway. The sharing of the experience gained and an overview of the intended way forward will offer a valuable insight for other mines considering embarking on a similar journey.

"INTRODUCTION The great demand for tungsten incident to the war has led to the exploration of a large number of low-grade tungsten deposits. To properly evaluate the low-grade deposits it is essential to have available a dependable method of analysis applicable to all types of low-grade tungsten ores. Results reported on the tungsten content of the ores have often varied quite widely and have led to confusion. The Bureau of Mines has been requested by Government lending agencies and by companies interested in the production of tungsten to publish a general method for the determination of tungsten in low-grade ores. To meet this need, the Bureau of Mines is herein submitting two methods for analysis that have been proved on a large number of tungsten-bearing ores various types in the Bureau of Mines laboratory in Salt Lake City. Also, a third method was developed that requires no cinchonine and has proved to be applicable on most tungsten ores. The cinchonine method is the generally accepted for analysis of tungsten ores. Very reliable results can be obtained by this method if certain precautions are taken, as outlined in this report."
