INTRODUCTION This contract is the most northerly portion of the Metropolitan Sanitary District of Greater Chicago's Tunnel and Reservoir Plan. (TARP) The project begins at Addison Street in Chicago and proceeds northerly approximately ten miles to end at Wilmette Harbor and Lake Michigan. The project which consists of 2 work shafts, 32 drop shafts, 7.322 km (24,020 ft.) of 6.7 m (22 ft.) diameter circular rock tunnel, 8.458 km (27,750 ft.) of 9.2 m (30 ft.) diameter circular rock tunnel and miscellaneous rock bolting and grouting, was bid for a total cost of $63,140,480. The tunnel invert elevation varies from 65.5 m (215 ft.) to 77.4 m (254 ft.) below the ground surface, which places the tunnel in a rock formation of dolomite limestone. At the tunnel invert, the unconfined compressive strength of the limestone varies from 96 MPa (14,000 psi) to 152 MPa (22,000 psi). The 6.7 (22 ft.) diameter tunnel required the mining of 10.9 cu m. (14.2 cu yd.) of rock per lineal foot of tunnel while the 9.2 m (30 ft.) diameter tunnel required the mining of 20.1 cu m (26.3 cu yd.) of rock per lineal foot of tunnel. The total cubic meters of rock required to be excavated from both tunnels was 818,821 cu m (1,070,978 cu yd.). All of this will be mined by tunnel boring machines (TBM). These tunnels were not to be lined with concrete. The thirty two drop shafts have upper portions that are cylindrical in the overburden and rock sections. Injection of biomass into blast furnace as alternative reducing agent is so effective for the purpose of mitigation of carbon dioxide emissions from steel industries, because biomass is considered to be carbon neutral raw materials. Certain amount of Palm Kernel Shell (PKS) is abandoned after Palm oil extraction process. To use as a reducing agent of blast furnace, PKS was carbonized and classified by 100 mesh sieve. To examine the gasification behavior of PKS carbide under the blast furnace conditions, several combustion experiments were conducted using hot model experimental furnace. The experimental results showed that the gasification efficiency of PKS carbide increased as the quantity of volatile matter increased. This tendency is the almost the same for the pulverized coal, so carbide of PKS can be used at blast furnace at appropriate amount of volatile matter that can be controlled by carbonization condition. In addition, the pressure drop of the furnace tends to decrease because the amount of ash in PKS carbide may be smaller than that of pulverized coal. PKS carbide is a suitable reducing agent in that respect.

The properties of crude petroleum continue to interest the Bureau of Mines and constitute an important phase of its major studies on the mineral resources of the United States. The Bureau's interest in the subject has been intensified by frequent requests for information on the characteristics of crude petroleum from various producing fields. Since its inception the Bureau of Mines has collected and analyzed samples of typical oils and at present has surveyed and classified crude petroleums from nearly all the known oil fields of the Western Hemisphere. Results of these surveys have been presented in various Bureau of Mines publications. (See bibliography, appendix A, p. 145.) The nature and comparative value of crude oils from various countries and the extent to which these oils may be considered potential competitors for markets are of manifest importance to the petroleum industry in all lands, largely because all crude oils, wherever produced, are either actual or potential competitors for a market with all other crude oils. The numerous discussions of foreign production of oil that have appeared in the technical press in the past indicate the great interest of the United States in this subject.

The Hermada antimony deposit is in the Sewtooth Range in southwestern Idaho, about 77 miles by road northeast of Boise. Stibnite mineralization occurs over an area one mile wide from west to east and two miles long. It is locally referred to as the Swanholm district. In 1947 high- grade stibnite ore was discovered on the East Fork of Swanholm Creek. Since then, ore in commercial quantity has been produced by the Hermada Mining Co. The total output for 1947-50 was about 5,000 tons of ore, containing 640 short tons of antimony metal.

The Oklahoma City Wilcox sand, discovered on March 26, 1930, has produced 394 million barrels of crude oil and 819 billion cubic feet of natural gas as of July I, 1941. The 100,000-bbl. wells, pressures of 2600 lb. per sq. in., and flows of "Wilcox" sand caused exciting moments in the early life of the field. Today the reservoir is substantially at atmospheric pressure and produccs 75,000 bbl. of crude oil daily through 466 pumping wells. Early estimates of the initial crude-oil content of the "Wilcox" sand1 indicated that about 600 million barrels of crude oil would remain after the pumping wells ceased to produce economically. The Oklahoma City Wilcox Secondary Recovery Association was organized in March 1939, to study the possibilities of recovering a portion of this oil. Only a very brief summary of the information available can be presented in a paper of this nature. Some simplifications and generalizations are necessary to give the over-all picture in SO short a space and statements made may not apply to a specific well or small area. Since the area under consideration by the Association is that north of the south line of section 22-11-3, some information will be presented for areas A, B, C, 1, 2, 3 and part of 4 of Fig. 2, and some will be for the entire Wilcox zone west of the fault. This paper is essentially an abstract of an engineering report made by A. D. Small, B. T. Murphree, M. C. Sons and the author for the Oklahoma City Wilcox Secondary Recovery Association on Sept. 5, 1940. Some information is taken from a report to the Association by C. V. Sidwell on March I, 1940, and some data are from a recent report by A. D. Small. It gives a brief history of the Wilcox zone, estimates of the initial oil contents of the reservoir, present conditions in the reservoir, and probable results from several programs of "secondary recovery." History of Wilcox Zone The Wilcox sand lies on the flank of the general structure, as shown by cross section of Fig. I2,3,4 and areal map of Fig. 2. The sand is of Ordovician age and is composed of well assorted, rounded sand grains with no apparent cementing material. The loose texture of the sand is shown by the enormous quantities of sand production from the wells and from the soft cores. The productive sand varies from zero thickness on the east to 220 ft. maximum and to zero thickness on the west because of water. The development of the pool4 as dependent upon drilling restrictions within the city limits, which accounts for the spacing of drilling operations listed in Table I by years. In 1931, areas I through 7 of Fig. 2 were open for drilling with the exception of some west-edge properties, and all wells drilled before Feb. I, 1935, were in this portion of the field. Nearly all wells drilled from 1933 to 1037 were in areas A, B and C. Since 1939, the newly drilled wells have gradually enlarged the producing area toward the west in the northern portion.

"The use of a torque wrench to establish the amount of actual load developed on an expansion anchor bofting system dates back to work completed in the early 1950s. The advent of ultrasonic measurement systems and hydraulic torque wrenches has made it possible for the U.S. Bureau of Mines to perform torque-tension measurements in the laboratory and the field much more accurately. The results indicate that the amount of initial boft preload may be overestimated by amounts in excess of 45% of the expected load using torque wrenches. This inaccuracy is primarily due to the friction that occurs between the bearing plate and the head of the boft. These parameters become extremely important when the support system is being used to prevent joint members from slipping relative to each other or when the boft acts as a heavy spring to clamp two or more sections together. Methods to overcome the frictional losses are presented in conjunction with a laboratory method to determine the actual torque-tension ratios for expansion anchor and combination bolting systems.IntroductionMechanically anchored roof bolts have been widely used in the mining industry since their introduction in 1947. Estimates made in 1989 indicate that out of 85 million fixtures, approximately 49 million bolting fixtures still use applied tension to complete the reinforcement necessary to maintain stable openings. Nearly 85 million bolts are used yearly. The most widely used bolt is the resin-anchored headed rebar, followed by standard mechanical roof bolts, specialty bolts (mechanically anchored, resin enhanced fixtures) , and combination bolts . Po st-tensioned resin rebars, combination systems, and friction stabilizers make up the remaining 10% of the units used (Fig. I).For mechanical, combination, and tension rebar bolts, the bolt tension is the primary means of reinforcing the roof, but in many cases, because of poor installation procedures, the bolts are ineffective. Mine operators recognize the importance of proper installation procedures. Long-term bolt tension measurements are required in the Code of Federal Regulations (CFR)In each bolting cycle, the actual torque or tension of the first tensioned bolt installed with each drill head shall be measured immediately after it is installed. Thereafter, for each drill head used, at least one roof bolt out of every four installed shall be measured for actual torque or tension. If the actual torque or tension of any roof bolts measured is not within the range specified in the roof control plan, corrective action shall be taken."

The origin of roof bolting is obscure, but is believed to have begun some 40 years ago in the mines of St. Joseph Lead Co. in southern Missouri. It was not until after World War II, and more particularly after 1949, as a result of the concentrated effort of the USBM, that roof bolting attracted widespread interest. It is estimated that at the end of 1954, 26 pct of all bituminous coal mining in the U. S. was being done under roof bolts. Those mines alone use nearly 2,000,000 roof bolts per month, according to USBM statistics. Uses in metal mines are increasing rapidly, as confidence and knowledge grow. The application has found equal success in other fields, such as tunneling work for dam and waterway construction and right of way maintenance on highways and railroads.

Traditional in situ fan flow test methods under accepted standards require determinations to be made of both static pressures and total pressures during testing. This is to determine the resultant velocity pressures, which are vital in the accurate determination of the final fan airflow. These crucial velocity pressure (Vp) determinations are normally determined using simple manometric instrumentation such as an electronic manometer or an inclined liquid filled manometer. There is relatively little noise or fluctuation in the static pressure determinations and they can be quite easily and accurately recorded. There is almost always considerable fluctuation in the velocity pressure determinations though due to the highly turbulent and irregular velocity profile normally found in such in situ installations. This velocity turbulence means that the recording of such data is subject to random human error as the observer tries to average such fluctuations mentally during the observation period. Worse than this, and in the extreme, the recording of such velocity pressure data could actually easily be misreported if, for some reason, persons chose to do so.The author has devised a field method using highly accurate quartz crystal logging barometers to objectively record these velocity pressures. The method eliminates the ability to either mistakenly or intentionally misreport these crucial velocity pressures and is carried out in parallel with the recognised methodology, so result comparisons can be drawn. As such, a far greater level of confidence can be achieved in the final flow performance results than using the traditional more subjective method. Further to this it is difficult and almost impossible to refute the results using this ancillary substantiation method.The accurate determination of fan flows due to the impost of the carbon tax has taken on much more significance given the financial impacts in Australia at this time. The methodology detailed herein can be applied equally for both fan flow compliance testing and the verification of mine airflow data for greenhouse gas emission evaluations.The paper utilises the results of one 24-point pitot traverse to demonstrate the various findings. These include the very wide range of velocity pressures, which were logged at most of the measuring stations. It also illustrates how the method is utilised and compares the results derived from both this method and the more subjective traditional method along with the benefits of logging the velocity pressure results during the testing process.CITATION:Rowland, J A, 2013. Abstract Following discovery on the Giant property of very promising gold deposits, some of which terminate against the steeply-dipping West Bay fault, a geological study was initiated co locate possible faulted extensions of the ore. Geological mapping revealed that the ore and the shear zones to which the ore is confined are older than the fault and therefore subject co displacement by it. It also disclosed several diabase dykes which seem co provide the best basis for determining the fault movement. After applying various techniques co determine their strikes and dips, the dykes were used as structural markers and it was estimated that, subject co certain possible errors, the movement on the fault was 16,140 feet (3.06 miles) south and 1,570 feet (0.297 miles) down on the west side relative co the ease. Evidence supporting this conclusion was obtained when subsequent deep diamond-drill holes intended to test the hypothesis cut an ore-bearing major shear zone which, so far as can be determined, is nearly identical with its present correlative on the Giant property. Introduction The fault under consideration follows a northerly trend past the west side of the original settlement of Yellowknife, which is situated 600 miles north of Edmonton and 400 miles from the Northern Alberta Railway terminus at Waterways, Alberta. The mining properties chiefly concerned include the southern part of the Giant claims, on the east side of the fault, and the Con-Rycon-Demelt claims, on the west side, 3Y2 miles to the south. Geological data were also obtained from the eastern part of the A. Y.E. property, which lies south of the Giant claims, and from the Negus, Meg, Yellorex, and Kam properties, which are south and southeast of the Con-Rycon-Demelt claims. Recognition of the major faults in the Yellowknife Bay area, including the West Bay fault which appears to be the greatest, resulted from the work of Dr. A. W. Jolliffe (McGill University, formerly of the Geological Survey of Canada) in 1935 and subsequent years. It has been stated with little exaggeration that these faults rank with the largest known steeply-dipping dislocations of the earth's crust. In the winter of 1939, a mineralized shear zone named the Creek Vein was found on the Giant property. It was noticed that the space relationship between the new shear zone and a body of quartz-feldspar porphyry is roughly the same as that between the Con C-4 shear zone and a body of acidic flows lying north of the Con property. Coupling this relation with the assumption that the movement along the fault is dominantly horizontal, it was postulated that the Giant shear zone represented the faulted extension of the Con C-4 shear.

Abstract The degree of cathodic protection of steel and the anode corrosion rate were determined when anodes and waters of different compositions were used at temperatures similar to those in domestic hot water tanks. Twenty different anode materials, sixteen of them magnesium-zinc-aluminium alloys, were immersed in six different synthetic waters resembling those to be found in various parts of Canada. The results showed that (1) both the degree of cathode protection and the average anode corrosion rate are affected materially by the composition of the anode material and of the water; (2) poor cathode protection is associated with low anode corrosion rate; (3) when the cathode is fully protected, the anode corrosion rate may be comparatively low or comparatively high, depending upon the composttion of the water; (4) an important relationship exists between the magnesium content of the preferred anode and the composition of the water; (5) the degree of protection is increased as the SO4 + Cl concentration of the water is increased and thus as its specific resistance is decreased. Introduction Fairly recently, the use of the active metal magnesium for the cathodic protection of less active metals has received a considerable amount of attention. This interest has been stimulated by the fact that the wartime demand for magnesium was greatly in excess of the present peacetime demand and there is a natural desire to continue operating the large magnesium plants which were built during the war. Information regarding the use of zinc and aluminium for this purpose also has been published. There is a great demand for domestic hot-water tanks which will resist corrosion satisfactorily. This problem is rather complex in view of the fact that the composition of the water used in such tanks varies greatly and depends upon the locality. The present investigation deals with the effect of water composition and anode composition on the cathodic protection of steel under conditions approaching those which exist in hot water tanks.

Although the metal silver has been known and prized from very ancient times, it is in the New World that the greatest silver camps have been found. This is shown in the following comparison: [] For the last few years, the World's annual production of silver has averaged about 240 million ounces troy. Of this total, the North American Continent contributes approximately three quarters, Mexico leading with 38 per cent, followed by the United States with 27 per cent, and Canada with nearly 9 per cent.[] Of the largest silver producers in Canada, the Sullivan takes first place. Although primarily famous as a lead and zinc mine, it produced, in 1926, more than 4.5 million ounces of silver. The Premier mine, in northern British Columbia, produced more than 3 million ounces. In Ontario, the largest producers in 1926 were the Nipissing mine, .with 1.9 million ounces, and the Keeley mine, with 1. 7 million ounces. The Mining Corporation produced 1.1 million ounces from mines in the Cobalt district proper, and an equal amount in South Lorrain; while from the Castle-Trethewey mine, in Gowganda, there was an output of slightly less than one million ounces.

THE LATE Dr. D. F. Hewitt, Ontario's foremost authority on industrial minerals, was the first to point out the importance of urban minerals when he produced figures (Hewitt 1968) to prove that the Toronto-Hamilton area was Ontario's second largest mining camp in 1966 (Fig . 1). In that year, the value of mineral production within a 60-mile radius of downtown Toronto exceeded individually that of Steep Rock, Kirkland Lake, Timmins, Manitouwadge and Elliott Lake. Only the nickel and precious-metal production of Sudbury .surpassed in value that of Toronto's pits and quarries. Although that position was unchanged for some years during the early sixties, it was admittedly an unusual situation: gold was still pegged at an artificially low value; uranium was stagnant; and Texasgulf had not entered the scene. However, the point had dramatically been made. The combined value of production from hundreds of sand and gravel pits and dozens of limestone and shale quarries was of formidable proportions. The mining industry of the urban fringe could not be denied. Construction aggregates, cement, building stone and bricks were fueling an apparently insatiable appetite for urban expansion and redevelopment.

Sheep Creek Mines Limited has developed several operating techniques that have greatly assisted in keeping unit costs at reasonable levels. Some of the techniques, as described in this paper, include organization, accounting, warehousing, bonus and contracts. INTRODUCTION THIS paper is a non-technical report on operating techniques developed by Sheep Creek Mines Limited at their Mineral King mine, located near lnvermere, B.C. Depressed metal prices and continually rising labour and materials costs have necessitated a continuous search for method to keep operating costs down. The newly developed techniques and practices have greatly assisted in maintaining unit costs. Sheep Creek Mines Limited is a mining company incorporated under the laws of the Province of British Columbia. The Company's share capital is 3,500,000 common shares, witl1 a par value of 50 cents each, of which there are 1,875 000 shares is-sued. The Company has eight di-rectors. The administration, exploration and accounting offices are located in Nelson, B.C. The Company's working capital is approximately $1,500,000.

In a previous paper upon the enrichment of mineral veins by later metallic sulphides,? the writer has shown that certain masses of rich ores, such as are found in many mines, either near the water-line or as bonanzas in depth, are of secondary origin, and are due to a leaching of lean ore and the concentration of the material by reaction between the solution and the unaltered ore below. The geological and mineralogical evidence is believed to form an adequate basis for a chemical and physical explanation of the phenomenon. In the present paper the writer will give a brief synopsis of this theory, and will apply it more particularly to deposits of the precious metals, laying special emphasis upon the dependence of such enrichments upon the presence of iron sulphide (as pyrite, etc.) in the primary ore, and upon structural features which control the circulation of the enriching solutions below the water-level. It is believed that many, though not all, of the bonanzas arid pay-shoots of rich sulphide ores, especially those carrying gold and silver, which are encountered in ore-deposits, are of such secondary origin. Apparently it is essential that the occurrence and structural relations of such ore-masses should be understood, as the success of the mine is often dependent upon the finding and extraction of these ores. A legitimate deduction, too, is that such ore-deposits decrease in value With depth. As my own studies have been mainly in Montana, my illustrations must be drawn from the ore-deposits of this and adjacent States, with such as I have noted in hurried visits else-

Pilot Hole "X" was drilled to test the formations through which the ventilation shaft for the proposed U.S.B.M. demonstration oil shale mine would be drilled. The geologic formations encountered in this hole are discussed. Correlation of the geologic horizons encountered in this hole with those encountered in nearby drill holes was accomplished by the use of geophysical logs. Data on the geophysical interpretations are provided. The anticipated geotechnical characteristics of the geologic units encountered in Pilot Hole "X" are described.

KENTUCKY'S first acid-grade fluorspar flotation mill, shown in Fig. 1, was placed in operation Aug. 1, 1952, by the Pennsylvania Salt Manufacturing Co. at Mexico, Ky. During 1951 a critical shortage of acid-grade fluorspar developed and it became necessary for the company to produce part of its fluorspar requirements. In 1951 the company purchased the Crider and Lennen metallurgical fluorspar mill and an adjacent stockpile of tailing at Mexico, Ky. The tailing, assaying about 26 pct calcium fluoride, originated from log washer and jig mill concentrators in the area. As the mill did not have a fluorspar dryer or convenient rail facilities, the company leased the Burleson concentrator at Marion, Ky., where these facilities were available. At Marion, Ky., on the Illinois Central Railroad, dry acid-grade fluorspar is transported direct to the company's Calvert City, Ky., hydrofluoric acid plant.

"The current California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) practice based on AASHTO LRFD Bridge Design Specifications is to use the O’Neill and Reese method (FHWA, 1999) for calculating the side resistance and base resistance of Cast-in-Drilled-Hole (CIDH) piles / drilled shafts. In this calculation, end bearing is typically neglected for piles constructed using a wet method due to questionable reliability of end bearing resulting from soil disturbance and inadequate cleaning of the base. Pressure grouting below the tips of drilled shafts in cohesionless soils has long been used worldwide to provide reliable end bearing capacity, but for decades it was relatively unused in this country. It has been used increasingly in the United States over the last decade. Before this project tip grouting has not been utilized on or accepted by Caltrans to maximize piles end bearing capacity. This project proved that tip grouting to mobilize reliable base resistance can be successfully implemented on a full-scale bridge project requiring over 350 large diameter shafts.For the Gerald Desmond Bridge Replacement Project, Shimmick/FCC/Impregilo, JV utilized a temporary Oscillator casing to the full depth to install CIDH piles. Piles were constructed by the wet method and then pressure grouted below the pile tip. A tip grouting procedure for these large diameter shafts was developed and tested to specifically address the geology and constraints of the project. This procedure was then proven during the Load Testing of test piles during the Test Shaft construction phase of the project. Tests showed a minimum reliable base resistance of 150 ksf could be mobilized in very dense sand at a downward movement of 5% of the pile diameter for piles ranging from 4.9 to 8.2 feet in diameter. By tip grouting, the length and diameter of the piles were significantly reduced."
