FULLY a decade ago, demand for ground mica began to exceed supplies of scrap mica from manufacturing operations and of waste block from feldspar and sheet mica mining in the United States, with the result that in recent years the market has absorbed larger and larger quantities of mica recovered as a by-product from clay washing,1 as a joint product with kyanite12 and by grinding schists. So far, only schists that contain a large percentage of mica have been utilized for making ground mica, but already there has been a good deal of wishful thinking with regard to recovering mica as an aid to the prospective working of low-grade gold ores and ores of certain base metals. With wet-ground mica selling at $60 to $100 a ton and even dry-ground mica worth over $20 a ton, many ores that could not be considered as otherwise workable under present conditions will show commercial possibilities if they can be made to yield even a relatively small percentage of salable mica. An interesting paper might be written on the coming role of industrial minerals as joint products of metal mines. It is largely a matter of markets. Many years ago I watched the mess left behind the gold dredges in the mountains of Colorado and thought of the Denver sand and gravel operators who prided themselves upon their canniness in providing devices for catching gold merely as an incident to their regular business of selling what we miners classed as "tailings." Nowadays almost every milling or mining operation near settled communities finds use for at least part of its waste for road material or concrete aggregate and several eastern iron mines have gone into the crushed-stone business. Promoters now mention fertilizer "filler" as potentially salable at all the way from $1 to $10 a ton, or whatever is needed to cover costs of mining and treating the "ore" and leave the metal values as "clear profit." THE subject of taxes appears to engage our attention altogether too lightly. At least it would seem that, notwithstanding the increase in the cost of government, and its concomitant increased taxation, little constructive work is being done with a view to solving the problem of increased taxes. I believe that the inattention of the public generally to the subject of increased taxation is due largely to the fact that shareholders are not advised of the amount of taxes paid by industry. Were companies to advise their shareholders the amount of monies paid or payable out of each year's earnings for taxes in one form or another, and were such amounts compared with the amounts available for distribution to shareholders, the effect would be a general demand for more equitable taxation methods. While I am not unmindful of the burdens and inequities in taxation confronting industry generally, I believe that the mining industry in this Province does not fully appreciate the burden represented by the costs of taxation. My reason for this belief is based partly upon1the fact that no serious effort has so far been made to devise some means By which the mining industry in British Columbia might protect itself against the ever-increasing burden of taxation. In addition to this fact the widely diverse nature of mining in British Columbia makes the accumulation of comparable data a problem which, so far as I can ascertain, has never been attempted in a manner which would be authoritative. It should not be necessary to cite the effects of this burden upon any one mining company or upon any branch of the mining industry, such as coal mining, placer mining, base-metal mining, or the precious-metal mines. In my opinion, the operation of our mines by large corporations is conducive to the payment of taxes with much less protest than would be the case were the taxes being taken out of the earnings of just a few partners or a very few shareholders. We appear to be too unmindful of the taxes, paid by mining companies, of a kind that are not so prominently brought to our attention as are the taxes which are calculated upon the taxable income of the company at the end of its fiscal year. British Columbian mining companies pay many other taxes besides those which are calculated upon taxable income. Among these are school taxes, property taxes, gasoline taxes, mineral taxes, coal royalty, to say nothing of fuel-oil tax, sales tax, and excise taxes.

The Federal Bureau of Mines conducted full-scale field tests in electro-kinetic dewatering and consolidation of slimes in cooperation with the Hecla Mining Co. at two of the firm's underground mines in north Idaho. To test the technique on new deposits, 4,000 ft3 of slimes from a collection sump, pumped into a watertight stope equipped with electrodes, were treated in two steps. Immediately after placement, direct current was applied using a floating electrode to hasten settlement of suspended fine particles. After removal of clarified water, the residue was further dewatered and hardened with electrokinetic treatment. In 25 hours, the material had become firm and dense with a surface capable of supporting workmen. In testing old deposits, 10,000 ft3 of slimes, placed in an unused tail drift 10 to 12 months previously, were treated. This material was sufficiently consolidated by electrokinetics to allow its removal from the mine with standard ore-handling equipment. In both tests, electrokinetic treatment densified slimes in a relatively short time with moderate power consumption.

This report is one of a series of reports on the characteristics of commercial aviation gasolines, It presents compilations of inspection test data on their products furnished by 16 manufacturers of commercial grades of aviation and special date obtained in Bureau of Mines laboratories on 66 samples of these gasolines, Data are presented for 19 samples of grade SO, 17 of grade 91/98, 22 of grade 100/130, and 8 of grade 115/145 aviation fuels. These gasolines are designated July 1948 production, although some of the samples may have been produced a month earlier or later.

The long-term open-pit mine production scheduling problem (OPMPSP) is typically solved in two broad stages. The first stage entails optimisation of the ultimate pit limit, which delimits the economical final pit and maximises the undiscounted value of the deposit. The second stage entails optimisation of the long-term open-pit mine production scheduling, which maximises the discounted value of the deposit. The long-term OPMPSP is a type of an NP-hard problem, such as the travelling salesman problem (TSP), because it is intrinsically complex to solve since it incorporates both hard and soft constraints. Therefore, metaheuristic approaches have been used to find global optimum solutions to the long-term OPMPSP. This paper presents a metaheuristic approach utilising a dual interchange algorithm (DIA) to solve the long-term OPMPSP. The DIA is a parent algorithm which supervises two subservient algorithms, namely, simulated annealing (SA) and Tabu search (TS). The DIA selects the better solution generated in each run from the two algorithms, and simultaneously penalises the algorithm that produced an inferior solution, while rewarding the one that produced a better solution. The DIA was tested on the three-dimensional Arizona Copper Deposit (KD) dataset, which is publicly available for research purposes from the online MineLib repository. It was set to generate net present values (NPVs) in five-minute intervals and the solution improved until it plateaued at about 30 minutes of runtime. The NPVs compared favourably to those obtained on the same KD dataset but obtained over 24-hour runtimes, when solved using simulated annealing and Tabu search algorithms, and the NPV generated from the work of Muñoz (2012) using the modified TopoSort as found on the MineLib repository at the time of this study. Therefore, this paper demonstrates that DIAs can be developed and used to solve the three-dimensional long-term OPMPSP.

"These hydrocarbons belonging to the same chemical series as methane, having the general formula CnH2n have many chemical properties in common with methane and their addition to a lean gas charges the properties and burning characteristics of the gas in the same general direction although to a different extent. The hydrocarbons of this series do not readily enter into chemical reaction with other substances and therefore are incapable of combining with oxygen or polymerizing in the disturbing system and thus cannot cause gum and room troubles commonly met with in the distribution of manufactured gas.As the number of carbon atoms in the molecule increases, i.e. in proceeding from methane throughout the series, the oxygen requirements for the complete combustion of unit volume of the gases also increases; in other words, the calorific values of these hydrocarbons (as gases) increases from methane. Similarly the specific gravity increases from methane in the same order. In Table 1 are shown some of the physical constants and properties of a few of these hydrocarbons which hive bearing on their use for enriching gas."

"It was discovered that the selective activity of bacteria during the extraction of raw material concentrates by means of flotation could also be achieved with extracellular polymeric substances (EPS) excreted by bacteria. EPS, which is extracted by means of centrifuging bacterial cultures, can help to significantly reduce the use of cyanides, approximately 200,000 t/a of which are used for ore dressing today.The bacterium used was Acidithiobacillus ferrooxidans. In order to identify the bandwidth of the oxidation activity, 20 bacterial strains of the strain collection of the University of Hamburg were attracted to iron(II) sulfate and pyrite under defined conditions. All strains oxidized iron(II) sulfate ten times faster than pyrite.EPS has so far been derived from four strains. In general, EPS extracts are divided into a hydrophilic and a hydrophobic fraction. The hydrophilic fraction is composed of e.g. fucose, rhamnose and glucose; fatty acids such as dodecanoic acid, hexadecanoic acid, octadecanoic acid and nonadecanoic acid were found in the hydrophobic fraction.Pure mineral phases and mineral mixtures were used for the flotation tests. As opposed to current knowledge, the results were reproducible with technical flotation machines."

Coal production from underground coal mines has been important to the development of the industrial economy of the United States. Environmental problems have developed from some abandoned operations. These problems include: mine and refuse pile drainage, subsidence, unsafe mine openings and to a lesser extent mine gases, slope stabilities, mine and refuse pile fires and abandoned equipment and structures. Field investigations in three eastern coal mining districts, two in Ohio and one in Illinois, were performed to document the mine closure procedures used and subsequent problems that developed. The purpose was to identify, evaluate, and rank the seriousness of these problems. Based upon this evaluation, the undesirable present day situations could have been avoided or at least minimized by varying certain mining practices or mine closure procedures. It was found that federal regulations address all of these problems during the pre mining, active mining and post mining phases except for abandoned equipment which is the least threatening problem category. Ideally current practice would prevent future problems. However, the extensive and complicated nature of the legislation, environment and mining practices will necessitate adjustments to the law. The investigator recommends the following: 1) Goal oriented legislation encouraging complete resource extraction, standardization and compilation of mining generated hydrological data, periodic review of the coal mining regulations, and improved communication and cooperation between coal interests, regulators and the public. 2) Permitting effluent limitations to accurately reflect natural conditions. 3) Solidly back filling shafts and individual assessment of sealing or capping requirements. 4) Installing shaft vent pipes into the fill material to intercept and vent methane.

Phase changes in as-cast alloys in the Ni2 CoCr-Ni, Ti-NSAl system containing 0.1 wt pct C were studied after heat treatment at 1650°F. It was found that a vegion of CrCo-type s was developed in this system after I1000 hr. The tendency for s formation was dePendent upon the aluminum and litanium content, the s -forming tendency generally becoming more pro-nounced as the latter two elements are increased. s lended to form in interdendritic regioues and was associated with solutioning- of- carbide phases. Electron- vacancy computations for prediction of s formation on these alloys mere in sufficient agreement with what was observed experimentally to indicate that the method should be of value in assessing a-forming potential in cast alloys. However, the correlation of electrotz- vacancy numbers may not be as favorable in cast as cormpared to wrought alloys. THE increasing use of high-temperature alloys for longer times at higher temperatures has resulted in a real need for obtaining information on the phase changes taking place in these alloys since these changes often have a direct effect on properties. This paper reports on a study of the phase changes in Ni-Cr-Co-Al-Ti alloys after prolonged heating at 1650°F. The alloys were selected from the pseudo-ternary system Ni2CoCr-Ni3Ti-Ni3Al and this system was chosen because it is the basis of many of the newer cast commercial superalloys. The attempt here was not to define accurately the boundaries of s formation in the NizCoCr-Ni3Ti-Ni3Al system but to delineate the phase transformations taking place upon heating alloys covering a wide range of chemistries in this system. An addition of carbon was made to all alloys to further simulate commercial alloys. It was hoped that the information generated in this manner would be of more direct use to superalloy designers than an equilibrium diagram approach since commercial alloys generally have outlived their usefulness when equilibrium is attained. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE The alloys were vacuum-melted from carbonyl-nickel pellet, vacuum-grade chromium, electrolytic cobalt, high-purity aluminum and titanium, and spec-trographic-grade carbon.

Introduction In the period from 1939 to the present, Canada has experienced a remarkable industrial expansion, rising to probably seventh in rank amongst world countries. In the early part of this period, the desperate need for military supplies unloosed tremendous amounts of capital for building new factories and for expanding and converting existing facilities. Mines, factories, and other divisions of the industrial economy bent every energy toward greater and greater output. The result was an 80 per cent increase in the volume of the nation's production within a period of four years, a truly remarkable accomplishment and one in which the mining industry had a very vital part. After the critical year, 1944, the tempo of industry eased off a bit, dropping approximately 20 per cent by 1946. At this time the prospects or post-war industry were clouded by monetary and political chaos in overseas countries, by trade restrictions, and by market uncertainties. There was, of course, a pent-up demand, both at home and abroad, for civilian goods that had been curtailed during the war and for capital equipment that had been destroyed. In the midst of this world-wide uncertainty, if anyone had ventured to predict that by the end of 1950 Canada's industrial output would be back to the 1944 level and humming along at nearly twice the best pre-war pace, he would have been considered rash indeed. Yet this has been the case.

The Bureau of Mines has been engaged in a program to increase the utilization of chromium by providing samples to individuals and institutions requesting chromium for research investigations. This report consists of a tabulation of the disposition of chromium samples distributed from July 1953 through June 1961; 109 requests for chromium were answered by providing chromium as electrolytic plate, powder, or wrought forms. The demand for samples reached a peak in fiscal year 1959 and declined to a relatively low level in fiscal year 1961. The largest number of requests came from individuals engaged in mechanical property studies; there were also many requests from those concerned with vaporized metal and physical properties studies. Most noteworthy application for chromium was the experimental use of the radioactive form, Cr[51], in radiotherapy of cancer.

MANY changes were made in the methods and equipment used in the mining of pebble phosphate rock in the generation immediately preceding the present World War and it would be extremely interesting to note the improvements that will be made during the next generation. Literally, much water has gone over the dam since the days when we used local cordwood for generating steam and drying pebble phosphate rock. belt-driven centrifugal pumps operated by steam engines. and floating dipper or centrifugal dredges; when we removed overburden by small steam shovels and transported it by dinkey locomotives and six-yard cars; when washing machinery was installed on wooden structures the washers being replaced every four to six years. Those were the days when men were plentiful, and 47 different mining companies were selling their products, based on .decidedly meager information; and. like so many mining operations, little thought was given to conservation. As the importance of phosphate rock has become more prominent in the thoughts of our economists, a more intelligent approach has been made to mining problems. Two-stage electric smelting tests, using small submerged arc furnaces, were made on high-iron manganiferous materials from the Pioche District, Nev., and the Cuyuna Range, Minn. The object was to reduce sufficient iron in the first stage to give a slag with a favorable Mn to Fe ratio for smelting to ferromanganese in the second stage. The nodulized flotation concentrate from the Pioche District contained 29.2 percent Mn and had a Mn to Fe ratio of 2.3:l. When smelted with coke and silica or alumina as flux, more than 90 percent of the manganese was recovered in slags with Mn to Fe ratios of 10: :24:1. The Pioche slag was smelted to ferromanganese using coke and lime- stone or dolomite as flux. The ferromanganese was high in silicon but other- wise met specifications. Recovery of manganese to ferromanganese in this step was 73 to 78 percent. Overall recovery of manganese was about 70 percent. The sintered flotation concentrate from the Cuyuna Range material contained 12.9 percent Mn and had a Mn to Fe ratio of 0.3:1. When smelted with limestone as flux, about 83 percent of the manganese was recovered in a slag with a Mn to Fe ratio of about 6:1. The Cuyuna slag was smelted to ferromanganese with coke and limestone for flux. Recovery in this step was 61 percent of the manganese in a high silicon ferromanganese. Overall recovery of manganese was about 50 percent.

"Concurrent with the continuing demise of many Canadian mining towns is the rise of a new method of providing remote mine sites with a workforce. This is the Long Distance Commute (LDC) which uses commuter labour and requires no permanent settlements to support the mine operation. It provides a flexible and cost effective method of operation to the industry and relieves both governments and industry of the expense of building and maintaining mining towns. However, little attention has been paid to the effect on workers or their families of the LDC work schedule whereby workers spend a fixed number of days at the site followed by a fixed number of days at home. Off-shore oil rig experience would indicate that negative social impacts may be expected. Research leading to an understanding of the problems involved seems to be indicated. One innovative suggestion has been to use already established but dying mining towns as workforce pick-up points for new LDC operations further north.BackgroundUntil recently, mine towns were considered as a necessary component of mine development. This was a natural symbiosis resulting from the need to provide workforce accommodation close to isolated mine sites. The early mine communities in Canada were often just a huddle of shacks around a head frame. Gradually mining companies began to provide housing which varied from basic duplexes and quads in grid pattern layout to professionally planned and designed towns, either model company towns or the more recent suburbs-in-the-bush, the so-called ""instant towns"" of the postWorld War II era of resource development. The improvement in accommodation reflected the need to attract a stable workforce as mine operations became more sophisticated. City amenities were expected and offered in these mine towns as a way of encouraging a permanent community of mining families. Indeed in towns like Manitouwdage, Schefferville, and others, it was not unusual to find a significant percentage of two- and three-generation families apparently providing the permanent mining communities so desired by mine operators."

The Rawley property is located in the Kerber Creek mining-district, Saguache county, Colorado, at an elevation of 10,600 ft. (See sketch-map, Fig. 1.) Ore was found in this vicinity as early as 1880, and claims covering a large area were located and in many instances patented. The ores, however, being of comparatively low grade, and the nearest railway station, Villa Grove, being some 20 miles away, it is extremely doubtful whether any considerable amount of ore was ever handled at a profit. It is safe to say that several hundred thousand dollars were spent (a large part in building mills) previous to 1902-03. About that time a very capable promoter gathered together a group of these claims and interested some New York people, who had had no previous mining experience, in the purchase of these claims. Following the organization of a company, this promoter became General Manager. As often happens under such conditions, the first step was to erect a mill to treat 100 tons per day. It may not be fair to this enterprise to say that the failure which followed might have been foretold, simply on general principles, but this much is certain—the water supply fluctuates in the course of a season through a wide range and for a considerable portion of the year was inadequate to run this mill at capacity. Further, it is currently reported that some of the mill foundations were placed on ice. However true this statement may be, it is a fact that, when first inspected by us, many of the belts in the mill were held on'their pulleys by means of idlers. A shut-down followed, with a material re-adjustment of interests, at which time we became consulting engineers for the company.

In terms of present metal prices, analysis of extant records of the Eureka district indicate past production of the magnitude of $200,000,000 in recovered silver, lead, and gold. Production to date has been thoroughly oxidized ore from massive replacements, fissures, manta, and pipe-like bodies-in large part from the massive Eldorado (middle Cambrian) and Hamburg (middle to late Cambrian) dolomite horizons. In the productive area of about 6 square miles carbonate rocks comprise 80 per cent of the section, which includes early Cambrian to late Ordovician horizons. Four-fifths or more of the district's production came from a block of Eldorado dolomite in Ruby Hill that was moved in over younger horizons on strands of a regional thrust fault. The lower 500 to 600 feet of the block was much fractured and brecciated and became host to the ores. The Ruby Hill fault, a late normal fault, limits the Ruby Hill block of dolomite on the north for its entire length of nearly a mile and terminates the downward extent and exploitation of its ores. It introduced an hiatus of some 40 years in the district's development. Drilling of the past 20-odd years, followed by underground work, has now exposed the down-faulted extension of the Ruby Hill block of Eldorado dolomite and its contained ores, dropped 1800 feet in a dip shift to depths beneath the surface of 2000 to 3000 feet. The ores at depth are the sulfide counterpart of those mined in early years on the footwall side of the fault. The ores of the district may be attributed to the same source as the intrusive quartz diorite outcropping in a limited way south of Ruby Hill but found at depth elsewhere in drill holes. The long north-south axis of the district, its anticlinal structure, its major faults, and the distribution of the intrusives and, in their relation to the surface, the ores themselves, all suggest that erosion has not cut deep enough to expose the extent of intrusives and the ores consequent upon them.

Ground-water and tailings pond monitoring in the Upper Santa Cruz Basin Mines Task Force's Special Studies Area has been performed to determine the nature and extent of aquifer contamination from copper tailings pond's recharge in the basin. A monitoring program for each of three mining areas (Mines A, B, and D) was developed. Analysis of data shows that recharge from Mine A's ponds has caused increased hardness, sulfate and total dissolved solids in local ground water. However, pumpage in the area has controlled most of the water's movement. Pond recharge from Mine B has led to similar conditions, and the degraded water is moving towards a local public-supply well. Pumpage from Mine D's interceptor wells is controlling some, but not all, of the movement of recharge seepage from Mine D's ponds. Recommendations include the need for enhanced monitoring programs at each current mine site, development of a monitoring program for Mine C's area, development of water budgets for all mines, investigation of tailings pond compaction and sliming, establishment of mine closure plans for containment of recharged pond water, and the need for additional interceptor wells in several locations.

The mineral kaolinite is one of the commonest minerals in the uppermost 10 m of the continental crust; ranking in abundance alongside minerals like quartz, mica, feldspar and calcite. Only very exceptionally does it possess all the necessary properties needed to make it worth commercially exploiting. The terms 'Kaolin' and 'Kaolinite' are derived from a locality known as 'Kau-ling', in Jiangxi Province, Peoples Republic of China; where samples of a white clay used by the Chinese to make porcelain were first obtained by European missionaries and explorers in the eighteenth century.

This paper presents a review of the state of the art in coal preparation plant instrumentation and a discussion of automation practice that could be applied based on current mineral beneficiation experience and demonstrated foreign technology in coal washing plants. Specific e-mules of applications of remotely controlled slurry values, pneumatic and electronic field transmitters, computers for control and data logging, and on-line analytical instrumentation are given. A program, to demonstrate this technology is described.
