The Bureau of Mines, under its cooperative agreement with the Kansas State Board of Health, has been conducting a study of the various methods of oil-field brine disposal in the oil fields of Kansas. A previous report5/dealt with this problem in the Ritz-Canton field, McPherson County, Kans. A preliminary survey of the Arkansas River drainage area in western Kansas was made during November and December 1934 and January 1935, and a second survey was made approximately one year later during the months of December 1935 and January and March 1936. In addition to the data on the production of oil and 'brine in the various fields and the methods used for handling the brine, the surface drainage and character of the surface soil in the various oil-producing areas were studied.

"Re-entrainment refers to dislodgement of particles deposited by both atmospheric and nonatmospheric processes and their subsequent insertion into a flowing field. Formation of sand dunes, snow drifts, soil erosion and fugitive dust emissions are a few examples of the natural occurrence of re-entrainment. Re-entrainment studies have been done for the estimation of potential hazards from nuclear fallouts. The phenomenon of re-entrainment has been utilized for the cleaning of wafers and filters. Re-entrainment is associated with both surface and underground mining activities. However, studies on dust re-entrainment in mine atmospheres are limited. Understanding the re-entrainment phenomenon is important because dust particles lying seemingly harmless on the ground and adhering to numerous surfaces can get re-entrained and become a health and safety hazard.There are significant differences in the kind of re-entrainment encountered in underground mines and those in other fields of interest. These major differences are air velocity, direction of air flow, particle size, amount of particles, and time of exposure. While numerous studies have been done in other fields to identify the role of interacting variables and their contribution to the mechanisms of re-entrainment, no similar reported work is available for dust in mine atmospheres.In this paper, recent research efforts on re-entrainment are reviewed. The most suitable form of representing re-entrainment in underground coal mine atmosphere is presented. Various approaches to studying re-entrainment phenomenon in mines are also outlined.In the mineral industries, formation of dust particles of widely varying sizes is a natural outcome of the fragmentation required in mining the solid resources. Fine particles in mine atmospheres, particularly in the respirable size range, are a threat to the health and safety of the miners when present in high concentrations. In 1980 the National Academy of Sciences (NAS) Committee on the Measurement and Control of Respirable Dust in Mines recommended that the spatial and temporal characteristics (of fragments produced in coal mining) need to be understood so that the exposure of workers to the dust can be controlled. Recently several studies have been performed to understand the fundamental behavior of the airborne respirable dust in mine airways (Bhaskar, 1987; Qin, 1988; Polat, 1989; Bode, 1990)."

Pyrite cinder is generated by roasting pyrite for sulfur dioxide production. It contains up to 62% iron, but also may contain other hazardous or toxic materials such as Zn, Pb, As, T1, Cd, Cu, Sn and S. Furthermore, the physical characteristics are not properly suited for conventional sintering. As a result pyrite cinder is considered to be unsuitable for iron and steelmaking or for outside storage because of its potential for causing environmental problems. In recent years industrialized nations have put increasing pressure on the manufacturers to either use such waste products or properly dispose of them. In this study, solutions to both the iron recovery and disposal problem were attempted by pelletizing the pyrite fines with internal carbon. The pellets, after hydrothermal hardening, were reduced and melted in a furnace for hot metal production. Hot metal of usuable quality was produced and the hazardous materials were either collected with the fumes or in the slag.

This paper will be presented in two parts. The first part will present the latest advancements in pile installation techniques using state-of-the-art press-in piling technology by Giken. By pressing in sheet piles and large modulus contiguous steel tube pile walls – as opposed to the more traditional installation methods using percussive hammers or vibrators – retaining structures can be constructed effectively noise and vibration free. For over water and coastal projects with limited access, this provides significant environmental benefits in the form of minimising the construction foot print and the impact to surrounding communities and the marine natural habitat. Typical noise and vibration data will also be presented. The second part of this paper will review the current manufacturing techniques for sheet piles and introduce innovative new materials used in the current piling market for embedded sheet pile walls. Materials include long service life non – ferrous materials such as new age plastics and fibre reinforced polymer piles. Their excellent long term performance and durability make them an effective solution in the marine environment. For steel piles, a number of steel grades with reduced corrosion characteristics will also be discussed including a newly developed steel to combat corrossion in the low water zone, an area often exhibiting the highest moments in a retaining wall. A number of project case studies will also be presented to reinforce their relevance in today’s changing construction landscape.

"A pressure oxidation plant to pretreat refractory sulphide ore at the Goldstrike plant in Nevada, was commissioned in early February 1990. The plant, with a nominal capacity of 1363 t/d, was commissioned over a one-week period and achieved design capacity and availability within ten weeks an unusually short period for a plant of this complexity.The pressure oxidation process is conducted under elevated temperature and pressure conditions, and in a corrosive environment. These conditions demand that the process and engineering design of the plant be carried out in a much more sophisticated and detailed manner than is normally required in a conventional gold plant.This paper provides an account of the process and engineering design of the Goldstrike pressure oxidation plant with special emphasis on the design of the vessels, slurry pumps, piping, valves, and control systems.BackgroundLocationThe Goldstrike property is located in Eureka County in northcentral Nevada on the Carlin geological trend. The mine is approximately 40 km northwest of the town of Carlin which is situated on Interstate Highway 80. The minesite is located 1700 m above sea level in the Tuscarora Mountains.Initial Goldstrike OperationsShallow, low-grade mineralization was discovered by diamond drilling in the Goldstrike area in the 1960s. A heap leach operation was established in the mid-I970s by the previous owners. The Post deposit was discovered in 1982. Gold production by mining and heap leaching reached I t/a (40 000 oz/a). American Barrick purchased the property in 1987 and started an aggressive program of deep drilling. This led to the discovery of the Betze and Deep Post deposits and established sufficient reserves to justify an initial 4100 t/d mill and a 5 500 000 t/a heap leach operation"

AS the pioneer operation treating the mixed lead- zinc-iron ores from the district tributary to the Salt Lake Valley, the International Smelting Co.'s plant has offered an extremely interesting and instructive opportunity to study some phases of this problem. Basically, there were two main reason for our attempting to work out a successful operation for the separation and concentration of the values contained in the rather widespread deposits of these so- called lead-zinc ores. In the first place, the time was ripe and demanded some method of curtailing the economic waste resulting from the costs of past and present practice of smelting ores of this character, or rather, those ores which could stand the charges inherent with smelting them. Secondly, but rather primarily with us, we believe that such a solution would greatly in- crease in general the production of lead in the district tributary to the Salt Lake Valley. It is generally known that there were and are three relatively large lead smelting plants in the Salt Lake Valley and the decreasing production of correspondingly clean lead ores was not efficient to justify the existence of all three. We could not hope for better lead smelting metallurgy nor more efficient business management than was being practised, so the only prospect was to at- tempt to work out some way to increase the primary production and thus widen the scope of operations.

"This work focuses on the characterization of heat generation during dry fracture by direct impact of a tantalum ore. Moreover, an attempt was made to quantify the heat energy loss to the environment during the grinding process of a ball mill. The study was carried out using mineral samples from a Spanish mine that were characterized by measuring their density and specific heat. During the experiments, increases of temperature ranging from 5.9 to 7.3 °C after the fracturing process were observed. A numerical model was then applied to calculate temperature distributions through the mill wall. Three possible combinations of heat transfer coefficients were analyzed, from (1) Kapakyulu and Moys, (2) Duda and (3) the heat transfer laboratory of Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya. The models with the coefficients from Kapakyulu and Moys and the heat transfer laboratory of Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya were found to provide results that were in best agreement with the experimental data. IntroductionEvery year, several billion tons of metallic ores, minerals, cement and other solids used in the ceramic and chemical industries are subjected to size reduction in ball mills around the world. The U.S. Department of Energy (2005) reported that in the United States about 29 percent of the total energy used by the mining industry, or 0.4 percent of total U.S. energy consumption, is used in comminution. In Canada and Australia, comminution is responsible for about 2 percent and 1.5 percent of total energy use, respectively. In nonindustrialized countries where mining constitutes higher fractions of their industrial sectors, comminution costs represent a significant contribution to mine operating costs. The specific energy consumption values for the grinding of these materials typically range from 5 to 50 kWh/t. Thus, a significant amount of electrical energy is consumed in the ball mill grinding operation (Aguado et al., 2006; Gupta and Sharma, 2014). Grinding can represent up to 50 percent of the direct operating cost in a mineral processing plant, especially as comminution devices operate in highly inefficient ranges of 4 to 8 percent (Wang, Yang and Yu, 2012)."

The work of the United States Bureau of Mines on stream pollution3 by coal-mine drainage has included a study of seasonal variations in acidity and volume of several streams in Pennsylvania. The acidity of these streams has been determined during the two or three years prior to 1930 and the results may be considered to represent "normal" low water conditions. The summer of 1930, however, was unusually dry and represents what may be termed "extreme" low water conditions on these streams. This report is a comparison of the results obtained for extreme low water of 1930 and for other years. The streams investigated were Buffalo Creek in Somerset County, Indian Creek (lower 5 miles) in Westmoreland County, Little Toby Creek in Elk and Jefferson Counties, Daguscahonda Run in Elk County and West Creek in Elk and Cameron Counties. These will be treated separately in the order given. Most of the descriptive matter and physical data pertinent to the streams and drainage basins are taken from published reports of the Pennsylvania State Water Supply Commission, 1917.4

"PURPOSE OF REPORTThe safety and efficacy of permissible storage—battery gathering locomotives are becoming recognized more and more in coal mines. The great mobility of this type of haulage equipment is due to the fact that no trolley wire and bonding of rails are needed; hence wherever there is track and adequate ventilation to dilute properly any dangerous gases, the storage—battery gathering locomotive may go. As coal near the outcrop or the surface is mined out, coal farther from the outcrop or deeper in the ground must be mined, and gassiness of the coal bed often increases under these conditions. The use of electrical equip¬ment capable of giving off arcs or sparks while operating near or at the coal faces constitutes a serious explosion hazard. Often, it is uneconomical or impracticable to use animal haulage, and locomotives must be employed. The operator should consider the safest and most economical unit; permissible equipment is the answer to this problem, and storage—battery locomotives are the only permissible electric haulage units.A comparison of permissible storage—battery locomotives with cable—reel locomotives of the latest enclosed ""explosion—tested"" type has been made at the Keystone No. 1 mine of the Houston Collieries Co., at Keys one, W. Va. The information and data contained in this publication were obtained by the writer during an inspection of haulage at this mine.ACKNOWLEDGMENTSThe writer is indebted to P. C. In recent years, a number of significant developments have occurred in the steel industry which are no-table and of general interest. This paper is confined to the steel-melting phase of the business. The development of high production rates on Stelco's Basic Open Hearth furnaces is chronologically summarized. Al-though various aspects of this subject have been presented previously, this paper summarizes the developments in high fuel rates, the usage of basic refractories, low and high oxygen rates and hearth maintenance. Background T HE interest which has been shown in steelmaking techniques in the past few years has been due, primarily, to the extremely high production rates obtained. Upon further study of the facilities and techniques employed to generate this steel at record rates, tonnage oxygen appears as the common factor. It can be stated that tonnage oxy-gen has revolutionized steelmaking techniques to a degree never before encountered. This Bureau of Mines report describes methane liberation trends from all U.S. coal mines liberating over 100 Mcfd (100,000 cfd) (2.8 Mm3/d). Detailed are results from the latest Bureau survey performed in 1985 and shown are mine and company name, location, coalbed and methane liberation quantity. The report shows that in 1985, there were 180 mines producing more than 100 Mcfd (2.8 Mm3/d) and the total quantity of methane liberated by these mines was 303,900 Mcfd (8,605 Mm3/d). This data is compared with previous studies performed in 1971 , 1973, 1975, and 1980. From 1971 to 1985, there was a 10% decrease in the number of mines liberating at least 100 Mcfd (2.8 Mm3/d) but there was a dramatic 34% increase of liberations from these mines. The increase seems to be caused by new mines being developed in deeper, gassier coalbeds, particularly in Alabama. Likewise, in comparing the ten highest liberating mines in 1975, 1980, and 1985, an increase in methane liberations each year was experienced. The report classifies mines by three levels of liberations: greater than 100 Mcfd but less than 500 Mcfd (2.8 to 14 Mm3/d); 500 Mcfd to 1 ,000 Mcfd (1 4 to 28 Mm3/d); and greater than 1,000 Mcfd (>28 Mm3/d). It was found that 87% of liberations were from mines producing over 1,000 Mcfd but these accounted for only 38% of all the mines in the study.

The conventional role of exploration, development and grade control is examined in this paper within the context of the many and varied types of gold occurrences which are found at the Dome Nine. The account endeavours to trace the development of the total ore evaluation process, from diamond drilling through the exploration and drifting stage, to the stope development and planning phase of the operation, with an emphasis on sampling techniques and assaying procedure. The concept of ore reserve calculations is developed and the practice of grade control is described. In summary, the role of the geological, the engineering and the mining department is presented in relation to the contribution each has to make in the evaluation and exploitation of ore from one of the world's classic Archean gold deposits.

The United States Bureau of Mines, in cooperation with the Natural Gas Department of the American Gas Association, has been studying actively for the past-several years the flow of natural bas through high--pressure pipe lines.4 This report deals with that part of the study involving the design of pipe-line, systems consisting of lines laid parallel to each other. The lines are deferred to as the original line and the parallel line. The paralleling line may or may not extend the entire length of the original line; however, the parallel line is, connected at its two ends to the original line. As a result of the large expansion of the natural-gas industry almost all markets within economic distance from the developed gas fields have at least one pipe line supplying them with natural gas. Small increases in the consumers' demand for natural gas can be met usually by increasing operating pressures, but any marked increase in demand necessitates paralleling sections of the existing systems. Whether this condition is due to a dearth of workable deposits or merely to insufficient exploration is not apparent . The mineral resources , as reported by various authorities , include asbestos , asphalt rock , bitumen , chromite , coal , copper , gold , gypsum , iron , lead , magnesite , manganese , marble and other building stones , nickel , ocher , pandermite ( a hydrous borate of calcium) , petroleum , phosphate rock , pyrite , salt , silver , sulphur , tin , and titanium ( ilmenitic beach sands ) .

Fletcher and Company® has encountered an extensive set of roof strata challenges and has overcome various drilling issues by varying machine parameters and working with customers and tool manufacturers to develop solutions. Every mine wants to drill and install roof bolts as fast as possible with maximum safety at the lowest possible installation cost for their conditions. In most circumstances, the intuitive method of higher speeds and pressures can actually have a detrimental effect on the roof drill safety and performance.This paper will outline recent tests carried out at several different coal mines in the Eastern United States. The tests focused on optimizing the drilling parameters of feed pressure, feed rate, rotation speed, and drill torque.The drill feed, rotation speed, and rotation torque, as well as the type of bit selected, have a definite impact on the performance of the roof drill including drilling speed, safety, and tool life. The drilling process can be improved while also improving operator safety and reducing bolt installation costs by maintaining the appropriate roof drill settings for the specific strata conditions.The advantages of improving the drilling process includes increased bit life, increased drill steel life, reduced hanging drill steels, reduced clogging of the vacuum system, decreased whipping drill steel potential, reduced noise generation, and increased cutting size which reduces fine dust generation and dust collection system servicing.INTRODUCTIONIn recent times, the economic pressures that coal producers are facing have created an increased emphasis on controlling operating costs. Several coal operators have pointed out their dissatisfaction with low bit life, and there is a renewed interest in improving tool life and machine performance as part of an overall cost control strategy. Operators are looking for ways to reduce tooling cost, maintenance costs, and drill downtime without decreasing drill performance. This renewed interest in reducing operating costs, along with the ongoing desire to improve safety, created a perfect environment to take a fresh look at the existing fleet of machines to see what could be accomplished. The goal was to take a practical approach to reviewing machine parameters to determine what changes could be made. The emphasis was on changes that would be feasible to roll out to an entire fleet of machines in a short period of time with minimal capital expenditure. The thought process was that significant improvements could be made by simply tuning up the machine parameters to provide a more efficient and safer bolting process."

It has been within only the last two or three years that enough progress has been made in preferential flotation to warrant metallurgists in recommending the installation of commercial-sized plants for the treatment of copper-zinc-iron ores. Until the new processes had been worked out successfully, the treatment of this type of ore had proved a stumbling block in the path of metallurgical progress. Separation of lead-zinc ore is comparatively simple. A lead-zinc ore low in iron may be separated and concentrated by gravity con-centration, provided it is not necessary to grind too fine. Owing to the specific gravity of chalcopyrite and sphalerite being so nearly the same, however, their separation by gravity concentration is out of the question. Complex lead-zinc-iron ores in which the several minerals are intimately associated, requiring fine grinding to free them, have been successfully treated by flotation for the past fifteen years. Galena is easily floated, and its flotation, unlike that of chal¬copyrite, is not affected by the reagents used to inhibit the flotation of sphalerite and iron sulphides. When an attempt was made to use the methods of lead-zinc se-paration on copper-zinc ores, it was found that the depressant re-agents added to inhibit the flotation of the iron and zinc minerals would, under certain conditions, depress a large part of the copper. It was also recognized that, in the grinding of copper-zinc ore, soluble salts were generated which were detrimental to flotation unless properly controlled. The main part of this paper will be a discussion of solutions in the grinding circuit in relation to the pro¬duction of soluble salts and their effect on flotation.

Wall control programs tend to be expensive and consequently require financial justification in order to get approval for the expenditure required. The difficulty faced in getting this approval is that the outcomes of a wall control program are all subjective – a prediction of wall stability and what the wall would do with and without the program. Determining a net benefit is difficult and often justification of a wall control program is based on gut feel, history and a good selling campaign to build a perceived need.This paper outlines a simple solution to this problem by applying risk management principles to wall control. The process is to identify the risks to the operation associated with current wall conditions and then build a risk database for different potential scenarios for each risk. A financial impact is assigned to each risk scenario to complete the database. A consequence and likelihood analysis of each of the risks is undertaken and a formula applied to estimate the projected cost to the operation for the current risk profile. The process is repeated for the predicted wall control conditions after the application of the wall control program. A successful wall control program will reduce an operation’s risk profile so this projected cost should be less than that calculated for the current scenario. The difference in the two projected costs is the value that the wall control program has produced and this value can be used to determine the net financial benefit potential for the wall control program.This methodology can also be applied to other improvement programs that focus on risk reduction such as vibration control.

Part of this was due to restricted purchases of strategic mineral supplies, and part to economic conditions. Inflationary tendencies have keen increasing since the war started; out in the past three years they have become serious. The difficulty in obtaining supplies, and labor troubles, has also combined to reduce production in many circumstances. British Guiana The Cuyuni Goldfields, Ltd., operating he Aleck Hill mine, is increasing their yanked mill to 500 tons. This appears be one of the few important new developments in South America during recent years. Brazil The big Volta Redonda steel plant was sported as being ready to start operations. Argentina Political troubles have restricted activities during the past year, and fuel short. ges have been so acute that surplus corn as burned in some instances.
