There has been much progress on the issue of acid drainage over the past 20 years; however, significant challenges remain. The International Network for Acid Prevention (INAP) is attempting to address them by globally coordinating acid drainage information sharing and research. INAP pursues three branches of activities: it links AD research, practice, and people; it organises, sponsors, and participates in regional workshops as a forum for technology transfer; and it instigates and funds key acid drainage research projects. Through these activities INAP is helping the industry deal with what is arguably its most serious legacy issue.

(communication to the Secretary*):—For some time before the publication of Mr. Scholz's paper, I had been collecting data bearing upon its subject, and I now take pleasure in presenting to the Institute my results in the form of a discussion. It has long been a matter of common opinion among mining-men that mine-explosions are more frequent during the colder, or winter months, than during the warmer ones, and it is a matter of common knowledge among them that the air-ways and road-ways in most mines are much drier and are more inclined to be dusty during the winter than during the summer. In many mines, places which are wet and sloppy in the summer are dry and sometimes dusty during the winter. These changes, of course, can only be due to atmospheric conditions, and are caused by differences in temperature and humidity. Until recently, however, very little attention has been paid to the part that atmospheric conditions may play in mine-explosions, or, rather, to the effect they may have in rendering mine-conditions peculiarly dangerous, and in spreading and rendering more disastrous the effects of what otherwise probably would have been small explosions. To show the difference in mine-conditions during summer and winter months, I have tabulated in Table I. the results of 24 observations of hygrometric conditions in several different mines at different times of the year. Mines Nos. 1, 2, and 6 are located in the Pocahontas coal-region, in McDowell county,w.Va., the first one being a shaft-mine and the others drift. Mines 1A and 2A are drift-mines located in Logan county, W. Va. All of these are mines of fair size, but none of them has been in operation more than six years,

Industry Adopts Research: Seventy-Ave years ago Thomas A. Edison began in a modest way and with limited funds to gather about him men of various talents to form the first industrial research laboratory. His laboratory at Menlo Park, N. J., became famous for many discoveries and inventions, but possibly the most important of all may yet be the industrial research laboratory itself. Today, private industry operates 2500 research laboratories in which 135,000 persons' are directly and indirectly creating new processes and products and improving old ones, as well as developing new information to help keep the fountain of knowledge from running dry. In this change-making function, the scientific personnel comprises 41 pct; the technical personnel 26 pct; and the balance, 33 pct, nontechnical. The term "industrial research" has become so broad as to include almost everything beginning with the search for and discovery of the laws governing the properties of matter and energy to the development and testing of processes, methods, and equipment. These classes of investigation commonly merge so that no sharp boundary can be traced between them. The National Research Council therefore defines industrial research as "the endeavor to learn how to apply scientific facts to the service of mankind."' Currently, expenditures for research by industry are variously estimated at between $450,000,000 to $700,000,000 a year,' or about twice the expenditure for 1940. The President's Scientific Research Board" estimated that the national research and development for 1947 (excluding atomic energy) was as follows: A few companies spend as much as 5 pct of their gross receipts for research, but 1% to 2 pct is considered a good proportion by many." Shortages: Commendable as is the record of growth and accomplishment of science in industry, it is only a beginning. America and the rest of the world have merely sampled the fruits of industrial research; most industries have yet to make research the key to their future. A top research consultant, T. A. Boyd, of General Motors, states ". . . perhaps 90 per cent of all companies still have no research laboratories."Y or example, of more than 17,000 manufacturing concerns whose gross sales exceed $500,000 a year, less than 2500 have research laboratories. A still smaller proportion of the 184,230 manufacturing establishments in 161 industriese have or could afford their own research facilities. Yet, the small and mediurn-sized com,panies with less than 250 employees each, produce one half of the dollar volume of manufactured products.' How are these companies to participate in and share the benefits of research? The iron ores of the Mesabi Range occur in a 340 to 750-foot thick, Precambrian cherty iron formation termed "taconite." For about 65 years, extensive natural iron ore bodies were mined, and the ores either shipped as a direct ore or processed by gravity methods to a shipping grade iron ore. Since 1956, magnetite taconite ores, occurring in magnetite-rich horizons in the Biwabik iron formation, have been commercially concentrated and agglomerated. The transition from natural ores to concentrating-grade ores is progressing rapidly so that, in the near future, a major percentage of the iron ore shipped from the Mesabi Range will be as iron ore pellets produced from taconite. Natural iron ores of the Mesabi Range occur in the Biwabik formation as trough ore bodies in elongated channels and as irregular and tabular deposits in fractured areas associated with faults and folds. Ore bodies range in size from a few thousand tons to hundreds of millions of tons and may occur in any part of the iron formation. In some areas of strong ore development, ore was formed from the hanging-wall argillite to the footwall quartzite. The natural ores and beneficiating-grade natural crude ores were formed by the oxidation of the iron minerals, magnetite, greenalite, stilpnomelane, minnesotaite, and siderite, to hematite and goethite and by the removal of much of the silica in the cherty quartz and in the associated silicates by leaching. The ores are believed to have formed by the oxidizing and leaching action of surface waters. Magnetite taconite ores occur as stratigraphic zones in the Biwabik formation where it contains sufficient magnetite to be concentrated profitably, by magnetic methods, to give a magnetite concentrate that is agglomerated into a high quality product. Unoxidized taconite has an extensive distribution away from and between channels of oxidation and leaching but only a part of the unoxidized taconite is of ore grade. Two general types of magnetite taconite ore occur: ( 1) magnetite taconite of the Main Mesabi Range, generally west of Mesaba, which is composed of magnetite associated with cherty quartz, greenalite, stilpnomelane, minnesotaite, and carbonates and (2) magnetite taconite of the Eastern Mesabi, generally east of Mesaba, composed of magnetite associated with quartz, cummingtonite, actinolite, ferrohypersthene, hedenbergite, fayalite, hornblende, pyroxene, garnet, and biotite. The Mesabi taconite is a metasediment derived from an iron- and silica-rich chemical sediment that has been regionally metamorphosed and, on the eastern end, additionally metamorphosed by the Duluth Gabbro Complex.

Abstract - The Vazante Mine is located in the Vazante District, the largest zinc district in Brazil. The Vazante deposit consists dominantly of an unusual willemitic ore. Small sulfide bodies are tectonically imbricated with the willemitic ore, within the Vazante shear zone. Structural styles of deformation and petrographic and isotopic evidence indicate that willemitic mineralization and deformation occurred synchronously during the Neo-Proterozoic. Various generations of hydrothermal veins and hydraulic breccias may pre-date, accompany and overprint the mineralization. Ore-formation temperatures are deduced from stable isotope geothermometry and mineral chemistry of both sulfide bodies and willemitic ore. Temperatures during the main stage of mineralization range from 206°C to 294°C (willemitic ore) and 317°C (sulfides), and reflect the prevailing metamorphic conditions within the shear zone. The fluid from which the gangue minerals of the sulfide bodies precipitated (at 250°C) had an oxygen isotopic average value of ?18O = +19.4‰. This value appears to reflect the interaction of metamorphic fluid with the carbonate rocks of the Vazante formation. At 250°C, the fluid in equilibrium with the vein mineral phases and willemitic ore assemblage exhibits a uniform oxygen isotopic composition, with an average value of ?18O = +11.5‰. The positive linear covariance of ?18O and ?13C ratios of the carbonates is most likely due to the mixing of metamorphic and meteoric fluids. The ?34S values of sulfides indicate a direct crustal origin for the sulfur. It is suggested that the sulfur is largely derived from pre-existing sulfide bodies and has been transported by metamorphic fluids. The willemitic ore may have originated from the precipitation of metal in sulfur- poor fluids under oxidized conditions, within the Vazante shear zone.

The drilling of constantly deeper oil wells has made it imperative that the manufacturer of casing be ever searching for new methods and new materials to meet the increased demands. One phase of this search constitutes the subject matter of the present paper. Starting from the original Drake well in 1859, the depth of wells has advanced by leaps and bounds, until today depths of 6000 to 8000 ft. are common. Conditions point to the necessity for drilling to greater depths, and it is not at all improbable that much of the future oil produc- tion will be from wells around 10,000 ft. deep. The trend to deeper wells is nicely illustrated by the curve in Fig. 1.l The points plotted are the maximum depths attained in the various pools which were at their peak for the years given. It may be of some interest to observe the change that has taken place in the tensile and collapsing stresses over the last 25 years. The pressure at the bottom of a 900-ft. hole, equivalent to the pressure caused by an equal column of water, is only 450 1b. per sq. in. The equivalent water pressure corresponding to the depth of the deepest hole today would be 4762 1b. per sq, inch.

Minerals are certainly where they are found. The undemocratic distribution of the world's mineral wealth has created an incongruous inbalance: mineral-rich, scarcely populated countries supply highly-populated industrialised countries that in turn consume more minerals than they produce. This has been as much a generating force for colonisation, invasion, and war as religion, political ideals, or megalomania. The Industrial Revolution of the seventeenth century was born in Britain, a country with large domestic resources of coal, iron, lead, zinc, copper, tin, etc., as well as a large population. As consumption outstripped production imports filled the gap, particularly from its worldwide colonies. For example, when Canada was founded in 1867 more than 905 of its investments were British financed, and much of these were mineral-based. The British made similar investments in South East Asia, Australasia, the Caribbean, and elsewhere, as did the other industrialised Western European countries hungry for raw materials. Later the United States emerged as a leading industrial power, again due largely to its abundant natural resources. Consumption soon exceeded production and foreign sources were saught. American business went exploring abroad ant many a mineral resource was developed almost totally on the basis of the US market many .thousands of miles away. Closer to home, Canada was also an obvious target for the US with its rich mineral resource base, small population, and geographical juxtaposition, so much so that about the time of the 1914-18 War the US took over from Britain as the major investor in Canada, and this peaked in 1967 when the US accounted for 80% of the country's foreign investment. After the 1939-45 War Japan joined the ranks of the USA and Western Europe as industrialised powers, and they too searched the world for the deposits lacking in their homeland.

It is not the purpose of the writer to set forth in these notes anything new or surprising in blast-furnace practice, but simply to lay before the Institute the somewhat unusual results obtained during a period of six consecutive months, ending April 30, 1896, at the Dover furnace of the Penn Iron and Coal Co., and to give, with these results, the conditions under which they were obtained, and all figures pertaining to that period. This plant was entirely rebuilt, on thoroughly modern and improved plans, in the spring of 1895, by Frank C. Roberts & Co., of Philadelphia.

Discussion by B. Beatty This is a response to M.J. Hrebar's paper, which tracks in detail the highly productive stripping capabilities of modern large bulldozers at two separate installations. It proves the old adage "economies of scale" and quantifies the advantage of being able to move large loads of dirt over comparatively short haul distances by sliding rather than carrying the load. This discussion examines whether a bulldozer is the most efficient way of using this geotechnical principle. Case 1 - Study eastern US: Contour coal stripping application The energy consumption for the Case 1 mining method (eastern US contour stripping operation) shows the D11 averaged 117 L (31 gal) of diesel fuel per scheduled hour, and produced 333.3 bank m3 (436 bank cu yd) per scheduled hour (0.351 L/m3). Assuming 1 L (0.26 gal) of diesel fuel contains 10.4 kW-hr of energy, the unit expenditure of fuel energy for Case 1 Study was 3.66 kWh/m3. Another way of shifting this material is by using an overburden slusher (OS), as shown in Fig. 1. The OS as shown in Fig. I. The OS is electrically powered and consists of a manned low wall winch (LW ), a remote controlled (radio telemetry) highwall winch (HW) and a hoe. The winches operate to pull the hoe back and forth across the pit. The hoe carries load in the forward direction ahead of a rear mounted blade and returns empty. A spreadsheet (Lotus 123) simulation package, BOSSIM, models the OS operation on a load by load basis over a wide range of pit configurations. The geometry shown in Fig. 2 of the paper was modeled using BOSSI M and the results are summarized in Table1. Table 1 shows a LW with 150 kW (200 hp) and a HW of 120 kW (160 hp) installed power, towing a 15-m3 (19-cu yd) hoe, would accomplish the Case 1 stripping task at about the same scheduled stripping rate (D11=333 m3/hr or 433 cu yd/ hour, OS=342 m3/hr or 447 cu yd/ hour). It was assumed the winches in this equipment have an electromechanical efficiency of 90%. This gives an average electrical energy expenditure rate of 151 kW-hr, and a unit energy expenditure level of 0.44 kWhr/m-3(0.57 cu yd/kWh)-an improvement of 8291%- over the D11 alternative. The energy comparison illustrates the importance of using more efficient electric power if possible, ahead of the internal combustion engine, and delivering power from a fixed ground position rather than through a moving track system. Another important energy observation is the comparative action of the dozer blade and the OS hoe. The former implement continuously digs and spills as it works the load forward. The OS hoe digs the load until full, the blade then lifts due to the contained load pressure and a shear plane forms under the mass, enabling it to slide forward in a force reduced - transporting mode. Economic comparison Table 2 operating cost per scheduled hour and unit cost comparison follows a format used in Tables 2 and 3 of Hrebar's paper and compares Case 1 Study with the OS alternative. Drill and blast costs are kept constant in both cases, although when larger OS units are considered, it is expected these costs will reduce because bigger hoe sizes will permit larger rocks to be transported efficiently.

Monodisperse micron size nickel oxalate particles with rhombohedron morphology were prepared from condensed Ni(OH)2 suspension by a novel gel-sol process proposed by one of the authors. Firstly, condensed nickel hydroxide gel was formed by fast adding 1 mol dm-3 NaOH solution into 0.2 mol dm-3 nickel chloride solution, and then oxalic acid solution with a concentration of 0.25 mol dm-3 was dropped into the gel drop wise through a pump equiped with a pH controller under preset pH value, and in this process, Ni(OH)2 gel was converted gradually into monodisperse nickel oxalate sol. The formation of the nickel oxalate particles was found to proceed through a dissolution-recrystallization mechanism from the nickel hydroxide gel. The product particles exhibited rhombohedron like shape with micron size long axis and sub-micron size short axis. The effects of such factors, as temperature, surfactants, et al, were evaluated experimentally on the particles sizes and morphologies.

In the UK during the 1990s the energy companies had developed a policy of æDash for GasÆ, building large natural gas power stations to produce more than 30 per cent of the UKÆs electricity demand. The price of imported thermal coal was dropping and the electricity generators were putting pressure on the UK coal producers to produce coal at a reduced cost. Imported coal from Columbia, South Africa, America and Australasia had increased their market share in thermal coal sales to over 50 per cent of a 55 Mtpa market. The pressure on the UK coal industry to reduce costs and improve productivity levels from an ever decreasing resource was high. Companies were benchmarking their operations on the imported coal producers and had to realign their organisations, productivity levels and costs to world best practice, not just technically, but in world class organisational management techniques.

In fuel cell powered automobiles, hydrogen is required to be stored in materials that have a hydrogen storage density of over 4 mass%; further, these materials should be capable of supplying hydrogen by using the waste heat from a fuel cell, which is at a temperature of 373 K, in order to match the mileage of gasoline-powered vehicles. A Ti-Cr-V alloy, which exhibits a BCC structure and forms a solid solution, is a promising candidate for onboard hydrogen storage materials. Although it has a large hydrogen storage capacity of over 3.9 mass%, the rechargeable hydrogen capacity is limited to approximately 2.6 mass%. In this study, the effects of fine pulverization of the alloy on PCT (hydrogen pressure-composition-isotherm) characteristics were investigated in order to improve the rechargeable hydrogen storage capacity of the alloy. From the PCT measurements of the finely pulverized samples of the alloy, a plateau in the absorption curve was observed to begin at a hydrogen concentration of 0.5 mass%; further, a rechargeable hydrogen storage capacity of 3.3 mass% was obtained. This was greater than that obtained from the sample that was not finely pulverized, i.e., 2.5 mass%. However, the plateau width in the desorption curve was 2.5 mass%, which was the same as that observed for the sample that was not finely pulverized. The increase in the rechargeable hydrogen capacity during absorption is attributed to the precipitation of the -hydride phase (MH~2) directly from the metal phase (phase). The precipitation of the phase (MH~0.5), which should be formed in low hydrogen concentrations, is suppressed as a result of a possible reduction in the internal defects such as dislocations, vacancies, and grain boundaries by fine pulverization and annealing of the alloy.

The study of oxidation behavior of High Chromium Steel material used for surface layer of work rolls was carried out. Specimens taken directly from the roll were subjected to thermal fatigue in the temperature range between room temperature and 500 °C up to 700 °C by using thermo-mechanical simulator Gleeble 1500D. Our observation was focused on the impact of oxidation as a principal mechanism of degradation of the roll’s surface layer - mainly on the characteristics of oxidation propagation in relation to the test temperature and microstructure constituents characteristics of the material. Oxidation is considerably accelerated by certain characteristics of eutectic and primary carbides, i.e. their size (area), composition, morphology, orientation regarding to the water-cooled surface, etc. In the presented paper selected cases where emphasized oxidation takes place are investigated, analyzed and explained. Obtained results thus represent a contribution to explanation of conditions which lead to acceleration of oxidation behavior that in turn can lead to chipping or even early spalling of material from the roll surface layer.

"We present some of our recent efforts in the development of predictive, directed oxidation chemistry of cerium(III) complexes under non-aqueous conditions. The electrochemistry of cerium(III)- alkali metal heterobimetallic aryloxide complexes is reported and compared with cerium aryloxide complexes that are kinetically stabilized by hydrogen bonding cations that span between the complexed aryloxide ligands. Comparative electrochemical measurements reveal differences between the heterobimetallic complexes and the hydrogen-bonded complexes.INTRODUCTIONThe rare earth elements comprise the lanthanides, La–Lu, and the element yttrium (Aspinall, 2001). Rare earth ores such as monazite, LnPO4, and bastnäsite, LnFCO3, typically bear mixtures of light rare earths: La–Sm while monazite, LnPO4, contains mixtures of heavy rare earths (Eu–Lu) (Cotton, 2006). Pure rare earth elements typically are isolated using a liquid-liquid separations process.(Bautista, 1995) The hydrometallurgy of these elements is a difficult problem because the separation factors between neighboring rare earths, which are predicated on the small differences in the sizes of the trivalent ions, are quite small (Cox, 1992). The element cerium, with its 4f1 electronic configuration in the trivalent state, is unique among the rare earth elements due to a relatively accessible 4f0 electronic configuration. The accessibility of the 4f0 configuration underlies the chemistry of cerium(IV), the only rare earth ion with molecular chemistry in the tetravalent oxidation state (Cotton, 2006). Cerium is trivially separated from mixtures of light rare earths by making use of its unique oxidation chemistry. In an effort to extend separations chemistry by oxidation reactions to other rare earth elements such as terbium and praseodymium, the solution electrochemistry of well-defined cerium complexes is of interest."

"In 2013, the commissioning of the MillStar Stabilisation and FloatStar Stabilisation and Optimisation controllers were completed at the Cerro Bayo Silver (Ag) mine in Patagonia, Chile. The MillStar control system has stabilised the feed to the SAG mill as well as the density at the discharge end of the SAG mill and ball mill. The FloatStar Stabilisation and Optimisation controllers have successfully stabilised and optimised the flotation circuit to ensure consistent product quality within desired specifications.The mill feed is controlled utilising the MillStar Solids Feed controller. Additionally, the solids to liquid ratio into the SAG mill was controlled utilising the Mill Inlet Ratio controller in conjunction with the Solids Feed controller. The discharge end of the milling process is a highly interactive and complex system. The use of a Robust Nonlinear Model Predicative Controller (RNMPC) was ideally suited to control this section of the process. On the Cerro Bayo milling circuit, the RNMPC was used to control the mill discharge sump level and the primary cyclone feed density to produce a more consistent feed to the flotation circuit.Three levels of the FloatStar control system were installed, for flotation stability, concentrate flow stability as well as grade optimisation. The Level Stabiliser was used to stabilise the level control on 6 flotation banks. The Flow Optimiser was commissioned on the Rougher, Scavenger and Cleaner concentrate sumps to stabilise concentrate flow from the flotation cells. The Grade Recovery Optimiser was commissioned on the Roughers section. A number of instrumentation challenges were identified which limited the overall benefit derived from the system. Once these were addressed, the performance was optimised. The overall benefit provided by the system was observed in terms of the improvements in Ag recovery."

The susceptibility of a low-alloy steel that has been hardened and tempered-826 M40 (EN26)-to embrittlement by strain aging during service was simulated by artificial aging of specimens at 100°C. It was found that the brittle transition temperature of both monotonic and cyclically strained material was increased by only about 25°C as a result of strain aging. It is concluded that the susceptibility of low-alloy steels in the hardened, tempered condition is less than that of low-carbon steel, and that such steels qualify for exemption of the periodic 'annealing' required by the Mines and Works Act.
