The reaction of coal, oil, or natural gas with air and oxygen and/or steam yields a gas containing varying amounts of impurities. Depending on the raw material and the end use of the product, these impurities include solids, such as dust or slag, and gases, such as hydrogen sulfide, carbon dioxide, and nitrogen. Considerable effort has been expended in developing and operating purification systems, and the literature is replete with equipment data and operating results. The research problems, the design, and the operation of the various systems have been the subjects of patent applications, journal articles, and textbooks.

"This work presents the small-scale mining cluster of kaolin in Rio Grande do Norte (RN) and Paraiba (PB), both Brazilian states, including the following information: number of companies, process flowcharts, production numbers, mineralogical (XRD) and chemical (XRF) composition, granulometric distribution (screen and laser granulometer) and image analysis (SEM). Some social indicators in the region of the RN and PB States are presented in association with these data. The number of companies and their flowsheet were obtained through in situ visits and sample collection for technological characterization. The comparative study of the different flowsheets for kaolin production in the world was done using the databases and presenting the state of the art of kaolin processing. The results indicated that the mean feed typically contains 35-39% kaolin with quartz, muscovite and kaolinite as main mineralogical components and SiO2 (65.83%), Al2O3 (21.19%), K2O (3.9%), and Fe2O3 (0,63%) as main chemical constituents. The products of mineral processing are twofold, one between 74 µm and 37 µm, and the other smaller than 37 µm. The wastes of operation had major quantities of kaolin. The average Human Development Index (HDI) of the cluster region is approximately of 0.61, which shows an association between mineral processing plant and social indicators. The kaolin recovery, however, is between 30-55% for the three most common types of flowsheets that are currently used in the small kaolin mining cluster, indicating a need for technological improvement to achieve regional development. These data could be used incrementally to adapt the process plant currently used in the small-scale mining cluster of kaolin."

Over the past few years the rising production costs, shortage of skilled labor, and increased use of lower grade ore bodies have all added justification for the use of on-stream analysis. A rise in the number of on-stream units indicates that this type of assay is now being accepted as a necessity. On-stream analysis is a much more rapid means of obtaining true assays of a flowing product when compared to wet chemistry or "grab" samples dried, briquetted and assayed by x-ray. In contrast, on-stream analysis uses real time samples assayed every 30 seconds while each stream is assayed every 5 to 15 minutes. It is very important not only to know that a change has occurred in the process, but to know what caused the change and how to correct for the change. For example, in a tailing sample the elements of interest comprise between 1% and 10% of the sample. The remainder is water and gangue. Previously the gangue was not assayed nor were the low atomic number elements used for corrections. In addition to the demand for higher accuracies some concentrators were being penalized for excessive Ca or in some cases 5i in their concentrates. This penalty was being imposed by the smelter in order that they could better cope with pollution problems and prolong the life of their furnaces. But until Ca, 5i, and S are measured on-line, nothing can be done about their control. By accurately measuring these light elements on-line, a complete assay is obtained of the total sample providing improved accuracy for the important products. The justification for complete accuracy assays is now even more obvious because they are possible at very 1ittle increased cost and at no increase in analytical time.

The Acid Drainage Technology Initiative (ADTI) was initiated in 1995 by federal agencies, the National Mining Association (NMA) and the Interstate Mining Compact Commission (IMCC) to identify, evaluate and develop cost-effective and practical acid drainage technologies. In 1999, ADTI was expanded through the addition of the metal mining sector, which is focused on drainage quality issues related to metal mines. ADTI addresses drainage quality issues from abandoned, active, and future coal and metal mines. The guiding principle of ADTI is to build consensus among industry, federal and state regulatory agencies on acid drainage technology development and technology transfer issues. ADTI is focusing its efforts on mine drainage prediction, sampling/monitoring, modelling and avoidance/remediation. ADTI is not a regulatory or policy development program. ADTI includes the Coal Mining Sector (CMS) and the Metal Mining Sector (MMS) under the overall guidance of the ADTI Operations Committee. The Operations Committee consists of representatives from industry, state and federal government and academia. The Coal Mining Sector includes two committees; a prediction committee and an avoidance and remediation committee. The Metal Mining Sector includes steering committee and work groups on prediction, sampling and monitoring, modelling, mitigation, and pit lakes. The Coal Mining Sector has produced two publications on the prediction and prevention of acid drainage. The Metal Mining Sector has workbooks under preparation covering the work group topics. This past winter, the Metal Mining Sector, working with the US Bureau of Land Management, presented a satellite training session on acid drainage. ADTI has evolved in response to changing needs and technologies as evidenced by the addition of the Metal Mining Sector in 1999. The Operations Committee and the members of the Coal and Metal Mining Sectors will guide future direction in response to identified issues.

Since the introduction of longwall systems, the prediction of roof behavior and support requirements have become the major issue referring directly to safety as well as productivity. In more recent times, and especially in the USA where longwalls are exclusively equipped with costly hydraulic self- propelled support systems, a decision whether a longwall is applicable in a given condition, and when so, what kind of equipment should be selected, is of primary importance. There are numerous examples where lack of experience, and subsequently wrong selection of supports or winning machines, resulted in considerable losses. It should be emphasized that careful studies of prevailing geological and mining conditions, especially in a new area, are required to assure a successful operation. An evaluation of the conditions can be carried out in different ways utilizing such methods as: - Theoretical approach. applicable when geological conditions comply with the theoretical assumptions. - Empirical relationship which gives satisfactory results where the coefficients could be adequately determined. - Structural geological studies which must be undertaken in all cases, since the frequency of fractures and their orientation have a prevailing influence on roof behavior. - Scale model study on equivalent material for determination of failure conditions in the roof and mechanism of movement (flow) of broken rock matter. Coefficients for empirical formulas can be determined by these types of studies, as can boundary limits for mathematical modeling. - Mathematical modeling, e.g., finite element analysis. - Measurements and observations taken underground during the development period end utilization of experience for previous longwall panels in the area. Usually it is the most practical method where mining and geological conditions are comparable. An application of me or more of the above approaches remains to be a matter of judgement for particular conditions, however, the utilization of a practical experience, when available, is usually the safest way for planning a successful longwall operation.

"A lest apparatus has been developed for obtaining the relations among confining stress, porosity and percolation rate for hydraulic sand backfills. The apparatus can also be used to evaluate internal drainage characteristics and the effects of partial saturation on percolation rates. The test apparatus, test procedures and typical test data are presented in this paper.IntroductionAlthough the standard percolation test has become an accepted method of evaluating the drainage characteristics of hydraulically placed tailings backfill, it is recognized that the test results require considerable interpretation due to the following factors: (I) The results can be markedly influenced by varying sample preparation procedures, which vary the amount of material segregation in the sample . In particular, a thin layer of slimes on the top of a sample can control the flow of water into the sample. Wall edge effects can also affect the test results. (2) The in-place porosity of the backfill is not duplicated in the test sample and empirical formulae must be used to estimate the variation of percolation rate with porosity. (3) Internal drainage characteristics and the percolation rate of partly saturated fill cannot be evaluated in the standard percolation test.In addition to eliminating these problems, the compression percolation test apparatus also provides additional data on the mechanical properties of the backfill. Compressibility (or bulk modulus) is measured at different stress levels during the course of a test and this information can be used in evaluating the usefulness of the fill in providing ground control and in limiting ground subsidence. The engineering design of mine backfill is becoming an important part of the over all design of underground mine operations. The design problems are sufficently different from conventional civil engineering soil mechanics problems that new test methods and design procedures are required."

I will not attempt to forecast either the future price of copper or the future growth of the copper industry; rather I would like to discuss the current trends experienced in the smelting and refining terms and conditions for sales and/or purchases of copper concentrates. A brief review of contract language and terms, together with a review of the common jargon, I believe, would be helpful. To accomplish this review, I will first list what I consider the four basic parts or sections of a basic ore contract and then illustrate basic terms with calculations.

The geologic modeling of multiple domains is required for the prediction of mineral resources and reserves. In general, explicit methods have wide acceptance among modelers due to the ability to manually add deemed important trends and geological features into the models. As an alternative, implicit geologic modeling techniques are increasingly adopted to reduce professional time requirements. These methods aim for objective, repeatable and flexible models by replacing the manual time-consuming interpretation of sections with the interpolation of signed distance values. These techniques, however, have been developed for the binary case of two domains at a time. The current paper presents an algorithm that extends the binary case to multiple domains. The method is able to transfer large-scale geological features from data to geologic models. A case study illustrates the benefits of the algorithm and practical implementation considerations.

The difference in age, host rock lithology, alteration and style of mineralization indicates a fundamental difference in the format ion of gold deposits in the Flin Flon and Amisk Lake areas. The Flin Flon area contains early quartz-sulfide-gold veins fo rmed within intermittently active fractures and later plutonic hosted deposits thought to be generated in a porphyry system. In the Amisk Lake area two types of gold occurrences are recognized: I) gold-quartzcarbonate- sulfide veins within or flanking fault zones and 2) structurally and stratigraphical ly controlled zones of dissem inated and vein type sulfide-gold mineralization within extrusive and intrusive rhyolite and dacite porphyries. Both types of deposits are set within supracrustal rocks. are accompanied by intense alteration haloes and were formed prior to the major deformation event suggesting an early, epigenetic hydrothermal origin.

The major factors limiting the establishing of vegetation on the shale and sandstone wastes at Minto are high exchange acidity and low pH (shale pH 4-5, sandstone pH < 4). In the first revegetation program (1967-74), 3.8 million trees were planted without grading on 4,000 acres (red, jack and scots pine and black locust). White dutch and sweet clover, birds-foot trefoil and red top were established in selected areas, and ponds were stocked with brook trout. In the second phase of reclamation, beginning in 1979, a comprehensive plan will be initiated which will allow for forest production, wildlife development and recreational activities.

The stripping of coal with mechanical. equipment has progressed since the introduction of the first steam-powered shovel for the retóval of overburden at a mine in Pittsburg, Kans., in 1877...From the smart steam-powered shovels with dippers of less than a cubic yard capacity, small digging radius, and shovels that required manual moving, the trend has been toward large-capacity machines. Steam as power has been replaced largely by electricity, gasoline, and Diesel fuel, and dipper capacity as great as 35 cubic yards has been attained. Shovels and drag lines are self-propelled and revolve through 360°. The cost of these large-capacity modern machines is great, and in order to assure the return of the investment during the life of the property the reserve of coal in the area to be mined must be large;" Many comparatively small areas of coal suitable for strip mining exist, but these areas probably could not be mined, profitably with this large equip- ment. Therefore, heavy equipment has not been used in small areas because of the high cost in place of this equipment, the time and Atpense required to transport the machines to the mine site, and the construction of power lines if the machines are electrical powered.. Scrapers and light excavating equipment ane mobile, and the investment cost is not high. These units have been used in sirring the coal in small areas. A study to determine the methods in, yogue, and economic considerations involved in the use of such equipment was undertaken, and the information obtained is discussed in this report.

The results of an inquiry into the structural nature of some 70 iron alloys containing both nickel and chromium over a considerable range of concentration are briefly described in this paper. This study is a part of a comprehensive program of investigation into alloys involving chromium in progress at the Union Carbide and Carbon Research 1aboratories. All the compositions studied contained carbon in amount comparable to commercial alloys. The B Constituent In addition to locating the limits of composition for the three principal types of structure (polyhedral ferrite, martensite and austenite) and their combinations, certain other features of the system were observed. A hitherto undescribed brittle constituent (designated here as the "B constituent") was discovered. It is very hard, non-magnetic and forms in two modes from chrome-ferrite by recrystallization. It is the stable low-temperature condition for the equal-proportion chromium-iron materials containing less than 10 per cent. nickel. Although it partakes of the nature of an inter-metallic compound, yet it may exist over a considerable range of composition. It is non-existent above a temperalure zone, varying with composition, from 800° C. to 950° C., and heating above this critical temperature develops chrome ferrite persistent after average cooling rate; a few hours just below this temperature will develop the complicated brittle crystalline type. The B constituent, when found in the grain boundaries of alloys of lower chromium content, contributes a serious brittleness removable, however, by heating and cooling rapid enough to prevent its re-format&apos;ion. By suitable means of precipitution, the hard B constituent can be made to strengthen the already stiff alloy matrix in the manner of submicro-scopic particles, as exemplified in duralumin or the Sykes iron-tungsten and iron-molybdenum alloys. Depending upon which of two letters describing the theme of the session I chose to honor, the subject choices because either one or three. They were: "Applied Research and Exploration and Discovery" or "Applied Research in Exploration and Discovery." The final choice; to partially ignore both of them. That minor difference in meaning may be appropriate here, inasmuch as very minor research/exploration differences may also have profound impacts on discovery. To further set the stage, I consider myself an Industrial Minerals geologist, and more specifically primarily associated with basic construction materials crushed stone and sand & gravel. My remarks will apply primarily to those materials. Therefore, when the discussion instructions included emphasis on beneficial aspects (to name a few): "drill target definition; elimination of ore potential; ore forming environments; alteration studies, and isotope analysis," problems became apparent. Evidently, and although this was a form letter, the drafters of that letter had no idea what was involved in research for a construction materials source. My task may be great.

Flotation works very well for particles that are typically in the range 20 to 150 µmin diameter, for base metal ores. In this range, it is possible to get quite high recoveries in conventional flotation machines. Outside this range, the recoveries decline progressively, whether it be with the very fine or the coarse end of the size spectrum. In this paper, the reasons for the drop-off in recovery are briefly reviewed, together with strategies for future work. Recent progress in the author&apos;s laboratory will be described. These include the Concorde Cell, which takes advantage of the high dissipation rates in the shock wave created when a gas-liquid mixture reaches supersonic velocities. The environment thus created is very beneficial for the flotation of ultrafines. For coarse particles, the reasons for the drop-off in recovery can be related to the highly turbulent nature of the pulp in a conventional flotation cell. To improve recovery, it is necessary to find a way of bringing particles and bubbles into contact in a quiescent environment. A new process for coarse particle flotation will be described, in which a fluidized bed is created in the flotation cell. The flow conditions are very gentle, and the high solids concentration leads to rapid rates of capture of the particles. Experimental results are presented. It is apparent that the maximum floatable size for coal and minerals can be increased by a factor often over the limits found in current practice. Advances

PT Freeport Indonesia’s Deep Mill Level Zone (DMLZ) is one of three operating cave mines at the Grasberg mine complex. The DMLZ is situated in the East Ertsberg Skarn System (EESS). It is set 500 m below the operating DOZ mine and located approximately 1,500 m below the surface, making it one of the world’s deepest panel caving operations. Initial undercutting of the DMLZ commenced in the second half of 2015 and has expanded to more than 120,000 m2. High pre-mining stresses and the changes associated with caving, combined with a strong and brittle rock mass, led to significant seismicity and rock bursting. Stress and seismic management are the main challenges for the operation and have evolved significantly from initial undercutting to the present. Considerable amounts of empirical data associated with ground response have been collected, evaluated and combined with historical lessons learned from the Intermediate Ore Zone (IOZ) and Deep Ore Zone (DOZ) mines, which are located within the EESS. This has provided an improved understanding of how the various geological, geotechnical and mine design criteria relate to one another. Additionally, the information has allowed for the development and implementation of improved strategies for stress and seismic management in the DMLZ. This paper describes how these learnings have driven changes in mine geometry, layout, and support systems. Through comprehensive monitoring and detailed inspections, positive changes have been seen in the ground response, leading to an increase in footprint reliability and accelerated cave growth. The paper summarizes the key learnings at the DMLZ regarding stress and seismic management as well as the positive improvements towards sustained and safe caving operations in the DMLZ.

DESPITE the confusion resulting from the depression and the beginnings of recovery, important progress in all branches of iron and steel metallurgy has been accomplished during the year 1933. Research work has been intensive and highly technical, with increasing attention paid to fundamentals. Plant application of research developments has been rapid. Highly specialized laboratory methods were used for the study of iron-ore concentration methods. More attention has been given by the blast-furnace operator to the sizing of ore and the elimination of fines from the charge by the use of sinter. Combustion in the open-hearth has been placed under better control and the insulation of open-hearth furnaces has spread rapidly, with resultant higher fuel efficiency and better control of the melting and refining operations. Control of iron oxide content in the slag and the determination of iron oxide and other inclusions in steel received great attention during the year.

The Doe Run Company's Herculaneum, Missouri lead smelter has existed in continuous operation since 1892. Throughout the history of the plant extensive developments have been made to improve throughput, increase productivity, decrease operational costs and improve technology, while remaining an environmentally responsible producer of high quality primary lead in the international market. This paper provides an overview of the Herculaneum smelter, focusing on the most recent configuration of the operations. The paper includes discussion on all the aspects of primary lead production at the Herculaneum smelter.

"INTRODOCTIONIn an earlier communication 1 from our laboratory it was reported that mechanical crushing of coal and quartz under normal air atmosphere generates of free radicals on the particle surfaces, and that these radicals decay with time, hence pointing to a higher toxicity of fresh dusts in relationship to pneumoconiosis and silicosis. More recently Fubini et al.2 have also reported the detection by electron spin resonance (ESR) of the formation of SiO. and Si-type of radicals from quartz particles crushed under atmospheric conditions. In agreement with earlier ESR studies on single crystals of quartz crushed under high vacuum ( -10-10 torr>3 and subsequent exposure to air,3 and to other gases,4 these radicals were identified2 as being formed by the homolytic cleavage of the Si-0-Si bonds and the reactions of the Si• and SiO- radical with atmosphere. Fubini et al.2 also suggested that these radicals might be involved in the mechanism of the fibrotic action by silica, either by transforming the particle surface into a selective oxidating agent or as an initiator of a sequence of reactions leading to fibrosis. Earlier Gabor and Anca5 bad reported that lipid ·peroxidation caused by free radicals on the silica surface might be involved in the red blood cell membrane damage. Thus far, however, no parallel cytotoxicity, fibrogenicity, and free radica1 studies on a given quartz dust sample have been reported, except for some earlier work from our laboratory.1·6·7 We now present more recent results obtained from parallel cytotoxicity, fibrogenicity, and free radica1 measurements on a freshly made quartz dust. The dust's free radica1 content was measured using ESR spectroscopy while its cytotoxicity potential was estimated via hemolysis. Hemolysis was employed as the toxicity test because it is a widely used method for estimating the potential of a dust for disrupting the cell membrane. 8 The fibrotic potential was followed by measuring the dust-induced lipid peroxidation, using linoleic acid as a model lipid. As discussed below, the results obtained suggest new clues to the mechanism of the quartzrelated cytotoxicity and fibrogenicity. MATERIALS AND METHODSReagentsCrystalline quartz particles with a size range of 0.2-2.5 mm were obtained from the Generic Respirable Dust Technology Center, Pennsylvania State University, University Park, Pennsylvania. These particles were crushed in air to obtain quartz dust samples with particle sizes smaller than 20 microns. We chose to work with a dust with mixed particle sizes, rather than a specific range, as an effort to simulate the mining atmosphere. An agate mortar-pestle arrangement was used for the crushing and grinding because of the close similarity of the structure of agate to that of quartz. Diethylenetriaminepentaacetic acid (DETAPAC) were purchased from Sigma. All other chemica1s were purchased from Fisher or Aldrich.Hemolysls ExperimentsHemolytic activity of silica was measured, following an established procedure,9 as the amount of hemoglobin released from a 2 % suspension of sheep erythrocytes after incubation with 10 mg of silica dust for one hour at 37 °C. The hemoglobin release was estimated via the absorbance at 540 nm using a Gioford spectrophotometer. The procedure was calibrated by substituting the silica dust by a phosphate buffer solution as a negative control (background) and O.S % Triton-X-100 as a positive control (100% hemolysis). The minerals barite (BaSO4-barium sulfate) and witherite (BaCO3-barium carbonate) are the chief commercial sources of the element barium and its compounds whose many uses are nearly hidden among the technical complexities of modern industrial processes and products. Barite, the major ore mineral, is extremely vital to the petroleum industry which in 1980 consumed at least 90% of the world&apos;s production of 8.8 million tons as a major ingredient of the heavy fluid, called mud, that is circulated in rotary drilling of oil and gas wells. The remaining 10% of the barite production was consumed chiefly in the manufacture of barium chemicals and glass and as a pigment, filler, and extender. Barite occurs throughout much of the world and is available from three major geologic types of deposits-vein and cavity filling, residual, and bedded-in sufficient quantity at competitive prices to meet current demands. The world&apos;s demand for barite is expected to increase, and geologic circumstances are favorable for the discovery of new deposits of commercial value. Witherite is much less common and abundant than barite, although it is more desirable in many ways as a raw material for the production of barium chemicals. The United States has not produced witherite since about 1950; England is currently the chief producer of witherite. End Uses Most of the world&apos;s barite production since 1926 has been used as a weighting agent for the muds circulated in rotary drilling of oil and gas wells. The muds fundamentally are mixtures of water, clay, and barite in different proportions that vary according to local reservoir conditions. Muds with a specific gravity as great as 2.5 are used. The mud is pumped down the hollow drill stem, passes through the bit at the bottom of the hole, and rises to the surface in the space between the drill stem and the wall of the hole. In the course of this circulation the drill bit is cooled, cuttings are removed, the drill stem is lubricated, the walls of the hole are sealed, and the hydrostatic head of the column of weighted fluid helps to confine high oil and gas pressures. The latter feature aids in prevention of gushers, thus reducing both environmental pollution and waste of oil and gas resources as well as conserving the natural reservoir pressure for greater production and rate of recovery of the products contained in the rocks. Barite is particularly well suited for drilling mud because it is clean, easy to handle, soft (nonabrasive), heavy, virtually inert chemically, and relatively inexpensive compared to many other available heavy materials. Barite is used in the manufacture of glass in continuous tanks. The addition of barite homogenizes the melt and gives greater brilliance and clarity to the finished glass. Ground barite, both unbleached and bleached by sulfuric acid, is a common industrial filler, extender, and weighting agent. The rubber industry is a major consumer of barite as a filler. Barite also is added to bristolboard, heavy printing paper, playing cards, rope finishes, brake linings, clutch facings, plastics, and linoleum, to name but a few uses. Bleached barite has long been an extender in white lead paint because of its weight. The low index of refraction of barite, however, makes its ability to cover marks poorer than some other substances, but its low capacity for absorption of oil is a good feature. Off-color or unbleached barite can be used as a filler in colored paints. In the construction industry, some lump barite is used in concrete aggregate to weigh down pipelines buried in marshy areas and to shield nuclear reactors. Because barite absorbs gamma radiation well, its use reduces the amount of expensive lead shielding otherwise
