"Two continuous coal zones occurring in a 2500f t (762 m) thick section of the Upper Carboniferous Pictou Group (Westphalian C and D) have been encountered in five offshore wells drilled f or oil and gas in the Gulf of St. Lawrence. They correlate, by means of fossil spores, with thick coals of the Mabou and Inverness coalfields situated at the eastern margin of the Basin. Therefore, the presence of a large submarine coalfield of at least 18000 sq mi. (46 620 km'] is indicated. This compares with an estimated size of 14 000 sq mi. (36260 km' ) for the Sydney Coal Basin.Accessibility is provided only by the small onshore parts of the Mabou and Inverness fields, because farther offshore the coals lie too deep to be mined (below 4 OOO f t ([ 219 m)).Two near-shore coal exploration wells indicate that at Mabou Mines the younger Inverness coals occur at a mineable depth to at least 5 km from land. A structure contour map of this area shows a reserve of 125 million tons in two Inverness equivalent seams that are 8.5 ft (2.6 m) and 4.5 ft (f.4 m) thick. The Mabou coals, however, reach too great a depth close to shore to possess mineable resources.A structure contour map of the Inverness submarine area, based on mine data and one off shore seismic profile, indicates inferred mineable resources of 160 million tons, in two seams that are 7ft (2.1 m) and 4.5 ft (f.4 m) thick . A detailed deep seismic survey will be necessary to substantiate the structure and resource estimates"",Maceral and coal quality percentage diagrams of five column samples of these seams (the 7 Foot and 13 Foot Seams of Inverness Equivalents) show a bright banded coal, high in reactive macerals, which will produce a weak coke unsuitable f or metallurgical purposes. A thermal coal with a rank of H. V. ""B"" Bituminous (0.64% Ro) is present, averaging 12000 btu llb (6 660 kcai/kg), 10% ash and 6% sulphur, of which 60 to 80% is derived from pyrite.Microlithotype profiles of the major Mabou and Inverness coals show characteristic successions that can be used f or seam identification and proved valuable f or structural interpretations.The time of faulting in the major fracture zone on the eastern margin of the Gulf of St. Lawrence Basin has been deduced from coal rank variations. A SEARCH of the records indicates that evidences of accumulations of petroleum and natural gas within the boundaries of British Columbia were discovered at approximately the same time as were those of Alberta. They probably would have been developed as soon bad it not been for the fact that they are in such uninhabited parts of the Province. Even today, the seeps of the Flathead area, and the later discovered extensive seeps of the Peace River area, have been seen by very few people. From the geological evidence, there is reason for believing that British Columbia soon will be a petroleum producing Province. Fifty-eight operators, both companies and individuals, are now backing the money and the effort which they have invested with us, for the most part within the last three years, in a belief that this is so. The promulgation of the Petroleum and Natural Gas Act in 1947 marked the beginning of a new phase with regard to the exploration and the development of our petroleum and natural gas resources. Since August 15th, 1947, the date on which the Act came into force, the area under exploration bas increased from a few thousand acres, held by lease under the Goal and Petroleum Act, 1986, to 10,460,115 acres, including all active permits, licences, and leases. In addition there are 192,720 acres under application, bringing the total under issue and application to 10,652,835 acres. The total area is comprised of 105 permits, 20 licences, and 26 leases under the 1986 Act. The permits and licences, which ?represent active exploration and development, are held by a total of 82 companies and 26 individuals.

As a result of a test-drilling program conducted by the Research Council of Alberta in 1968, a gypsum deposit averaging 30 feet in thickness, with a chemical purity of 84 per cent gypsum, has been proven to underlie the Clearwater River valley for a distance of 18 miles at depths ranging from near-surface to 300 feet. This and other subsurface deposits in the vicinity of Fort McMurray, Alberta are the product of local hydration of anhydrite beds believed to be the water-insoluble remains of the leached Prairie Evaporite formation of Middle Devonian age, the thick salt section of which is preserved down dip. The effects of salt solution are seen in the disturbed bedding and the intermixture of greyish green shale with gypsum in the core, the shale content being responsible for the rather low chemical purity of the deposit. A similar gypsum deposit, but probably of higher purity, is postulated to occur beneath the Athabasca River valley about 60 miles north of Fort McMurray.

I would feel more equal to the task if I could have the opportunity to talk to them singly, in doing which I know I may count upon their good sportsmanship not to compare notes. There has been some discussion between Mr. Kelly and myself as to our respective duties on this occasion: The precedents are not clear as to whether the retiring or the incoming president is expected to speak at length. Mr. Kelly's argument was that as the incoming president confines himself to promises for the future his field is a broad one and his opportunities for extending his remarks correspondingly unlimited.

Essas ligas possuem uma elevada resistência à oxidação, elevada estabilidade térmica e elevada resistência à fluência em altas temperaturas, sendo esses requisitos necessários para aplicação nos fornos. Mudanças microestruturais, conhecidas como envelhecimento, podem ocorrer durante a operação, influenciado na resistência à fluência. Desta forma, a caracterização dos estados de envelhecimento de uma liga HP torna-se necessária para avaliar a sua vida remanescente. O objetivo deste estudo é caracterizar duas condições microestruturais de uma liga HP com a microscopia eletrônica de varredura e o ensaio não destrutivo de ultrassom. O processamento do sinal ultrassônico, utilizando a Transformada Rápida de Fourier (Fast Fourier Transform – FFT), foi realizado sobre o segundo eco de fundo do sinal ultrassônico, permitindo correlacionar a análise espectral do sinal com a microestrutura do aço HP. De acordo com a metodologia proposta, os dois estados de envelhecimento foram caracterizados através do processamento do sinal ultrassônico.

"Premature failure of rock bolts has been recorded at twelve underground coalmines over the past 15 years in Australia. Over the last four years, UNSW Australia has been conducting an Australian Research Council (ARC) and Industry funded linkage research project into premature failure of rock bolts. The extent of the problem was investigated by underground surveys of mines with known prematurely failed bolts using visual mapping, non-destructive load and ultrasound testing. A major component of this project was to define the environmental factors responsible for corrosion of rock bolts. The environment to which a rock bolt is exposed will include groundwater chemistry, the mineralogy of the strata, atmosphere within the drill hole and even microbial activity. This paper focuses on the groundwater survey and analysis findings to date along with in-hole bolt corrosion coupons installed into field sites. Corrosivity classification systems exist for general corrosion but do not apply to the rock bolt stress corrosion cracking (SCC) problem found in Australian underground coal. The method of in situ investigations is leading towards the building of a corrosivity classification model to assist mines in prediction of premature rock bolt failure. Fibrous silicon carbide was produced by thermal decomposition of certain silicates contained in graphite crucibles. Induction heating was used to produce the necessary temperature and thermal gradients. Both green and white fibers were mainly the beta modification even though each color grew within a different temperature zone. Alpha silicon carbide, present in insufficient amounts for X-ray detection, was identified by electron diffraction. The white fibers formed in a zone between 1,365° and 1,634° C (±50° C). The green fibers (less contaminated) formed in a much more narrow zone between 1,650° and 1,672° C (±50° C). The average lengths and widths of microscopic fibers grown by this method were 1.5 mm/0.002 mm (white) and 1.2 mm/0.0035 mm (green); however, same fibers observed by electron microscope had cross-sectional measurements of 150 to 300 A. Both differential thermal analysis and thermogravimetric analysis showed that silicon carbide fibers oxidized in air at temperatures above 500° C. Fibrous silicon carbide was indexed as a cubic cell with the dimensions a = 4.358 A. The density calculated from X-ray data was 3.217 g/cm3.

Video techniques for monitoring exposure, such as NIOSH’s “Helmet-CAM,” employ both real-time dust monitors and mobile video cameras to assess workers’ respirable dust exposures. Many real-time personally worn dust monitors utilize light scattering sensing elements, which are subject to measurement biases as a function of dust type (size, composition, shape factor) and environmental conditions such as relative humidity. These biased and inaccurate dust measurements impair the monitor’s ability to properly represent actual respirable dust concentrations. In the testing described, instrument mass concentration data was collected using three different types of commonly used commercial off-the-shelf personal dust monitors and compared to a reference standard. This testing was performed in a calm air (Marple) dust chamber in which three units of each make and model (for a total of nine monitors) were used for each test. Equivalency factors (EF, a multiplier to match the Thermo TEOM 1400a reference instrument) ranged between 0.746 and 1.879 across all dusts and environmental conditions tested, and between 0.821 and 1.519 on the ISO test dust.

The Crewstation Analysis Programs (CAP) is a package of computer programs that can be used to analyze some human engineering aspects of crewstation design (such as visibility and illumination) that have particular significance in underground mining. It was developed under the U. S. Bureau of Mines (USBM) Health, Safety and Mining Technology program at the Pittsburgh Research Center, Pittsburgh, PA. This manual describes the steps necessary to collect data in the laboratory to develop luminaire profiles for the CAP illumination analysis. It also describes how the CAP Illumination Model calculates illumination. 1.1 How CAP Calculates Illumination 1.1.1 Background -CAP currently includes assessments of visibility and illumination in the surrounding work area. The advantage of using computers for these types of analyses is that many design iterations can be tested quickly and efficiently to learn the effects of changes. This reduces the need for expensive testing using physical mockups. Another advantage is that design ideas can be tested in situations where it would not normally be possible. For instance, the effects of modifications to a lighting system or canopy design on visibility could be tested while the machine remains in service.

It is possible to purify some liquid metals by exploiting the difference between the vapour pressure of the bulk metal and the minor constituents or impurities. The rates of purification can be improved by carrying out the process under reduced pressure, that is, so called, vacuum. Some commercial examples of vacuum refining are the purification of molten tin to eliminate trace amounts of lead and the refining of cobalt, also to remove lead. The objective of this paper is to review the basic theory behind vacuum refining technology in order to show how the feasibility of vacuum refining can be determined simply for a particular system by evaluating Olette's Volatility Refining Criteriont.

"Soil contamination by oil as well as by other organic pollutants poses a major problem to the environment. Various methods have been used to remove organic contaminants from soil, such as: biological, thermal, chemical and physical. Methods based on Mineral Processing principles have also been used (cyclone separation, gravimetric separation, attritioning and washing). This paper studies the possibility to remove a rich-in-contaminant soil fraction by applying flotation. The contaminated soil was artificially prepared by mixing soil with diesel fuel. Sodium dodecylsulfate (SDS) and a tertiary amine (TA) were used as collectors. The effect of collector quantity added and conditioning time was studied. The results showed that the removal of a rich-in-contaminant soil is feasible while a clean fraction is also obtained. In several cases, the removal of oil-contaminated soil approaches or reaches 100%. Introduction Human activities are intimately associated with environmental pollution to the air, water and soil, as well. Soil pollution from inorganic and organic compounds is of equal importance with that of air and water, as it results in soil degradation and its concomitant problems with respect to meeting the human needs (house building, agriculture etc). Heavy metals along with their compounds are encountered among the most usual soil inorganic pollutants. The corresponding organic soil-pollutants are oil, oil-derivatives, pesticides, various aromatic (benzene, phenols, cresols, toluene etc) and poly-aromatic (naphthalene, anthracene etc) hydrocarbons, as well as various other organic compounds (pyridine, cyclo-hexane etc). Oil remains the basic energy source sharing 38% of the global needs, being followed by coal and gas with a share of 26 and 21% correspondingly [1]. The entire activities related with oil production, transport and consumption promote pollution in the air, water and soil. Consequently, soil pollution from oil is favoured at refineries, storage sites (due to possible pipe and tank leakage, tank cleaning works, loading and transportation) and, finally, at the oil-selling sites. Oil (or diesel-oil) fuel is a mixture of hydrocarbons, with 10-20 carbon atoms in the chain of each. It is mainly composed of paraffins, naphthenes and various aromatic compounds. In general, oil is composed of 20-30% in aromatic compounds, 5-6% in naphthenes and the rest is paraffins [1]."

"INTRODUCTION The Park City district, situated 30 miles east of Salt Lake City, Utah, in the Wasatch Mountains, Is a well-known producer of lead, zinc, and precious metals. Nearly continuous production has been maintained from the dis¬trict since its early discovery about 1870. For approximately 50 years, gravity milling methods were employed to beneficiate Park City ore, and during that time tailings from the mills were sluiced down Silver Creek and deposited on lands below the camp for 7 miles.Owing to the large tonnage of tailings deposited along Silver Creek, considerable work was done in the past in the attempt to develop a low-cost concentration method for re-treating this material, but no-method was found that was economically feasible. The Bureau of Mines was asked to conduct beneficiation tests on Park City tailings in November 1944, and metallurgical studies were initiated at that time. This report summarizes the results of laboratory ore-dressing studies made on samples from the Grasselli deposit."

"High performance production under challenging geological conditions is a product of several parameters. Main factors are the technical equipment and the knowledge in processing. The design and the support system of maingates must also be taken into consideration. The extraction of seams in German underground hard coal mines of RAG in a range of heights between approximately 1.1 and 4.0 m ( 4 and 13 ft) is done by plow and shearer technology. A complete system for quality management of production is required. The process examination of processes begins with procurement of the equipment. Education and training of the engineers and specialists, as well as for the miners are requirements for success as well.This report gives an overview of RAG measures for achieving high performance. Starting with examination of the processes accompanying procurement of equipment, the following important elements are described. Standards in education and training, technical design and elements of automated processing using stateof- the-art in control systems are critical to this system.The application of automation plays a decisive role in modem coal mines. The latest development in German coal mines is the fully-automated shearer system for longwalls. This helps to enhance safety, particularly in difficult ground conditions, by removing the shearer and shield operators from the immediate mining activity.INTRODUCTIONLongwall mining in carboniferous strata in Germany faces various challenges. Different longwall systems are used to mine up to 24 seams, each with a thickness between 1.1 m (3.6 ft) and 4.0 m (13 ft). High stresses due to a depth of up to 1,400 m (4,593 ft) requiring pillars between the panels, require special systems for roadway development, roadway support and reinforcemen.t as well as for longwall advance operations. Two main types of equipment for extraction are shearer and plow systems. While shearers are utilized for seam thicknesses above approximately 1.8 m (6 ft), plow systems can be used for smaller seam thicknesses between 1.8 m (6 ft) and approximately 1.0 m (3 ft)."

"THE mineral industry is constantly undergoing changes and facing challenges, and today we are in the midst of another serious one -namely, manpower requirement at every level in the mines, shops and plants. In the not too distant past we had a situation where labour was plentiful, although the equipment, by present-day standards, was quite inadequate, and that's easily understandable when you look back at the primitive methods by which our Western mines were first developed and operated, and then improved by the inventiveness and ingenuity of man.I'd like to show you a few slides from drawings made by Buck O'-Donnell which illustrate some of yesterday's methods of mining. Some of you probably had first-hand experience with some of these so you know they were tedious, time-consuming and involved a lot of heavy labour.Taking the Anaconda Company operations at Butte as an example, we can see what has happened in just the past ten years. In August of 1956, the Butte mines had 5,516 day's-pay employees and 976 salaried employees, for a total payroll of 6,492. In August of this year, there were 3,645 day's-pay employees and 605 on the salaried roll, for a total of 4,250. The number of contract miners had gone from 1,347 in 1956 to 606 in 1966 and that of other underground miners from 2,893 ten years ago to 1,149 this year. Along with these changes, however, another change of special significance has taken place, and that is in the number of skilled craftsmen, surface engineers and so on required for our operations. In 1966, we had 1,890 of these people, 600 more than in 1956 and nearly three times as many as just twenty years ago."

An innovative process using titanium tetrachloride (TiCl4) gas as reactant has shown successfully to obtain titanium through electro-winning of TiCl2 formed in-situ on titanium cathode. The process involves a continuous feed of TiCl4 gas reacting onto a titanium cathode immersed in a molten salt (NaCl-KCl), whereby in-situ formation of titanium dichloride (TiCl2) through a disproportion reaction. Simultaneously, the TiCl2, thus in-situ formed in the molten salt media, has been reacted into chlorine gas and titanium, the latest electrodeposited on the titanium cathode by electrowinning. The reaction kinetic of this innovative process was investigated in terms of TiCl2 in-situ formation rate and galvanostatic electrodeposition rate, where, in particular, the effect of operating variables such as TiCl4 partial pressure and flow rate, as well as temperature and galvanic potential applied was investigated.

THE breaking and handling of ore is obviously the most important consideration when the layout of a new mine is contemplated. The problem must be attacked with due regard to the claim area of the property, the dip of the orebody, the anticipated percentage of payability, the width of the reef, and the amount of dislocation anticipated by dykes, faults, or sills. Among these, as far as East Geduld is concerned, the three most important items are: Area. 2,640.5 claims. Average dip 12° (from flat to 35°) Average channel width 36 inches. We are fortunate on the Witwatersrand in 'chat there is usually sufficient information available from surrounding properties to determine, within narrow limits, the factors mentioned above. With this information avail-able, the choice of layout is not limited, and it will be found that on the Witwatersrand each group has developed its own technique to suit its individual requirements. On East Geduld, the layout of the property for handling ore is known as the endless-rope haulage system. Following is a brief description of the general principles followed.

Blaine number has long been used to evaluate the pelletising ability of iron concentrate in the industry. Much information and practical data are available about the effect of Blaine number on pelletising efficiency of different concentrate types. But not many researchers have focused on the effect of Blaine increasing method on pelletising behaviour of coarse concentrates. In this paper the effect of two different grinding methods (i.e. HPGR and Ball Mill) on physicochemical properties of coarse magnetic concentrate green and fired pellets were investigated. Microstructural studies by Field Emission Scanning Electron Microscope (FESEM) showed that the concentrate for which the Blaine number had been increased through HPGR grinding, has flake-like morphology. In contrast, increasing the Blaine number through ball mill grinding results in more granular particles. Two samples were prepared using HPGR and ball mill. The Blaine number of the HPGR product and ball mill product were 900 cm2.gr-1 and 1200 cm2.gr-1 respectively. The results revealed that pellet properties of this HPGR product are comparable to that of the ball mill product; this is due to the fact that the flake-like morphology leads to enhanced pelletising performance of coarse magnetite concentrates.
