The Shortage of Mining and Metallurgical Engineers I N many parts of the Western World attention has recently been drawn to the acute shortage of mining and metallurgical engineers produced by the universities. Naturally, the reasons for this shortage have been discussed, and various remedies for it have been proposed. In this paper, I want to examine some of them. It is now fairly generally ac-cepted among mining men that the easy attractions of modern urban life have left the career of mining in the metaphorical as well as in the literal backwoods. The industry finds it increasingly difficult to recruit adventurous and intelligent young men; for such men now seek their intellectual, if not physical, adventure in more glamorous occupations from a safe social base in suburbia. The salaries, opportunities and security offered by the mining industry do not complete effectively with the rewards offered by other industries and by commerce, taking into account the social disadvantages of a mining life. The mineral wealth of pre-Cambrian rocks in Canada has been the subject of much study by geologists and engineers (members of this Institute), particularly so in the past few years, following discoveries of mineral deposits in areas far a part. This interest is well worth sustaining knowing the numerous rich producing mines within the pre-Cambrian formations, and the vast area covered by its rocks throughout this country. The pre-Cambrian has yielded minerals, both metallic and non-metallic; of these a much diversified list could be made. In more than one district we can point to mining as being responsible for the opening up of new sections, attracting a population into regions which otherwise would have remained virgin land of little commercial value. In these pre-Cambrian formations are found the rich copper deposits of Michigan, producing without interruption since 1845, and from which seven billion pounds of copper has been won; while in Minnesota and the adjoining district, at the head of Lake Superior, are mined iron ores which have rendered possible the great steel manufacturing industry of United States, the base of the economic structure of that wealthy country. The pre-Cambrian has given Canada the nickel-copper mines of the Sudbury district, the silver deposits of Cobalt and the gold camps of Porcupine and Kirkland Lake. With all of these our members are familiar; and it suffices to mention them to bring to mind pictures of the wealth and 'the growing population, in a word the importance of mining in?those sections of the country.

Although secondary-recovery methods have not been applied widely in California, it is apparent that increasing attention and effort must be given to this phase of recovery if the State is to maintain its high rank as a petroleum producer. Steadily increasing demands for petroleum products and decreasing rates of discovery of new oil fields and rapid depletion of existing reserves emphasize the prospect of an adverse situation of supply and demand in the not-far-distant future. If the trend of discoveries becomes more favorable or if more complete economic recovery of the oil in place can be obtained by secondary recovery, this situation can be averted. Not only are these reserves of economic importance to the petroleum industry to meet increasing market demands, but economic reclamation of such reserves is an important conservation measure, which will prolong the productive life of many fields" Accordingly, progressive operators in California are alert to the possibilities of secondary recovery and have done much to implement such operations wherever feasible. Most of the operations are of the pressure-maintenance type} in which the reservoir pressure is maintained or partly maintained by injecting natural gas to increase oil recovery. The possibilities of recovering additional oil from stripper fields by gas drive and water flooding (including water disposal) also are being tested in experimental field projects. Table 1 summarizes gas and water-injection projects in California.

Cave mining offers a flexible technique to exploit large, low grade, deep ore bodies with low operating costs. It is typically done in either a top down approach; i.e. sublevel caving, or in a bottom up approach; i.e. block or panel caving, to extract ore bodies that may have been previously considered unfeasible to mine. Sublevel Cave (SLC) mining, in particular, is a cave mining method based upon the utilization of gravity of blasted ore while the overlying host rock fractures and caves under induced stresses and gravity. Thereby the caved waste originating from the overlying rock mass fills the temporary void created by ore extraction to achieve a controlled collapse of the roof.

"INTRODUCTION A letter from S. D. Strauss, vice president of Metals Reserve Company, Washington, D.C., dated May 22, 1945, to the chief of the Metallurgical Branch, Bureau of Mines, in Washington; includes the following: Because of the present critical shortage that exists in the supply of corundum required by certain industries in war production, the Reconstruction Finance Corporation, Mr. W. C. Keeley, Vice Chairman for Metals and Minerals, War Production Board, has recommended that the Reconstruction Finance Corporation though Metals Reserve Company, proceed with preliminary mill testing of the corundum ore in Gallatin County, Montana, and that the results of that testing be transmitted to the War Production Board. If the results of the testing work are considered satisfactory, Metals Reserve Company will then provide for the actual mining and milling of the ore for the production of corundum concentrates.Pursuant to the above stated recommendation by the War Production Board, Metals Reserve Company desires to make -use of the facilities of the Bureau of Mines testing plant at Rolla, Missouri, for conducting sink and float and other concentration tests on representative samples of the Montana corundum ore. Two, and possibly three samples of ore are to be tested which will have an aggregate weight of approximately 50 tons."

Because of the' situation in Europe during the summer of 1939, with the possibility of war and consequent curtailment or loss of supplies of tin to the United States, the Bureau of Mines undertook an investigation of domestic tin resources. This was permitted by the Strategic Minerals Act of 1939, which authorized investigation of possible domestic resources of strategic minerals necessary in a national emergency. The minerals selected were in short supply, and the United States depended almost entirely on imports to meet normal requirements. The Black Hills of South Dakota were selected for investigation as one possible source of tin because of the occurrence of the mineral there has been known since 1876, although production had never been important. The Tinton area, in the northern part of the Hills, had received the most attention and contained some minor indicated and inferred tin deposits.

Sulfate balance control is a common problem for zinc plants. Roast-leach-electrowin plants are mostly concerned with the over-generation of sulfates while for the HudBay direct leach plant both extremes are possible including potential necessity to buy sulfuric acid to replenish a sulfate-depleted circuit, which makes the problem doubly important. Quantitative methods were applied at the HudBay plant to analyze sulfate generation/depletion based on a local sulfur balance and sulfate extraction calculation in the leach circuit, using a Pb-tie method. Main factors were established influencing sulfate generation/depletion, including the critical role of Pb and pyrite. Regression analysis proved to be effective and allowed the quantitative prediction of Pb concentrations necessary to reach the equilibrium for the sulfate balance. This in turn provided a firm basis for a sulfate-control strategy realized through concentrate blend correction, which allowed the plant to fine-tune sulfate generation/depletion effectively reducing economic consequences of excessive/deficient sulfate generation.

The Annual Business Meeting of the members of The Rocky Mountain Coal Mining Institute held during he 84th Regular Meeting of the Institute was called to order by the president, H. Dean Jacot at 11:30 a.m Tuesday, June 28. 1988 in Peak Room 5 of Beaver Run Resort at Breckenridge, Colorado. Twenty three were present and a quorum was established. The president stated the purpose of the annual meeting is to inform members of the status of the affairs and activities of the corporation during the year. It was moved by Loren Linville, seconded and carried to approve the minutes of the previous meeting as published in the 1987 Proceedings. The chair called for reports of the various com¬mittees and these reports will he placed on file in the RMCMI office. Bylaws and Resolutions. Chairman Loren V. Linville reported there were no bylaws revisions. He further reported that the Board had adopted two resolutions: (I) Noting the passing of members since the last convention-Richard T. Brownrigg. Don A Dewey, John T. Maulshy. Hugh D. Nyquist and Mike Zakotnik. (2) Recognizing the superior skills of J. Brett Harvey. RMCMI Vice President of Utah. For recruiting 26 new members from the State of Utah and named him as #1 Recruiter in the Institute?s 1988 membership drive. Linville further commended the Executive Secretary officers, chairmen and committees loran excellent job in planning the 84th Regular Meeting and convention. Membership. In the absence of chairman Ed Sullivan. the secretary reported there are currently 718 active or dues paying members, 51 Life Members and 250 delinquent in dues payment. In the 1988 membership drive. 132 new members have been recruited and 74 of them attended this convention making up 27V, of the total attendance. Patrons of the Institute. This report was given by the secretary for chairman Ira McKeever. A total of 124 plaques has been prepared during the low year life of the program. It has been culled to 119 possible donors as some firms have gone out of business or consolidated. Of this number 46 renewed their annual $100 donation and three new Patrons have joined prior to the convention for a total of 49. During the convention. four new Patrons donated $100 each. tour former Patrons pledged $100 each and seven would be-new Patrons pledged $100 each for a total of 15. This would bring the grand total to 64 if all pledges are received prior to the close of this fiscal year as opposed to 59 renewals in 1987. Program. Co-Chairman Pete Nielsen announced the convention program theme "Broadening OUR Horizons" was well received despite the loss of three speakers during the final days prior to convention. Because the remarks of the Monday luncheon keynote speaker ran over the first time-to-be-tried Monday afternoon Poster Session was delayed almost an hour in beginning. This well thought out feature will he run again next year but in a different time frame. Nielsen thanked his co-chairmen, Bill Balaz and the Poster Session chairman Marcie Greenberg. Publicity. Chairman Tom Egan reported three newsletters including the convention newspaper were sent members during the year. He and Bob Jacob of Bob Jacob Public Relations were at registration daily to secure business card ads and to solicit advertising for the Proceedings. Scholarship. Chairman Keith McGinnis reported that six of the seven scholarship recipients were present at the convention. The University of Arizona at Tucson was added this year and it was the only university visited this year by the chairman. Each scholarship recipient was introduced to the membership at the Monday morning Welcome Session, presented a plaque and responded. The input Iron each winner was most favorable to the program. Each was appreciative of the many contacts made and the educational seminars and programs. McGinnis noted that the mining engineering department at the University of Wyoming may be dropped during the coming year. Joe Dunlap suggested that every member rally support of this department. This report describes the exploration and recent utilization studies the Bureau of Mines conducted on the Iron King, Chambers, and Dry Camp chromite deposits in the John Day district, Grant County, Oreg. The field investigations were undertaken during parts of 1939 and 1942 to determine the tonnage and grade of chromite in the district that could be utilized as a war reserve for the steel industry. As a result of the Bureau's field work, which included construction of 9 miles of access road, 6,204 feet of diamond drilling, 195 channel samples, and 1,020 linear feet of trenching, an ore reserve of 208,000 tons of 22-percent chromic oxide was indicated in the 3 deposits. Less than 1,000 tons of this ore has been mined since the field work was completed because the 2 largest deposits are submarginal in grade and there is as yet no incentive to develop and mine the ore. Since the war, however, the Bureau has been seeking means of utilizing the ore. Two methods of utilization that show promise are direct smelting of the ore in an electric furnace and use of the chromite for making refractory brick.

This paper proceeds from the premise that process improvement is a key part of the mineral engineer’s role, and one in which he/she can make a significant contribution to shareholder value. It presents four tools to help with process improvement projects. Two are designed for process monitoring, to determine as soon as possible whether there has been a true change in performance: the cumulative sum (cusum) control chart plot with V-mask, and the control chart using a process model. The other two are used for process optimisation: simplex self-directing evolutionary operation (SSDEVOP), and a response surface model developed using a central composite rotatable experimental design (CCRD). These methods are robust, have a rigorous theoretical basis and are easy to implement. They also promote project continuity which increases the chances of success, particularly in fly-in/fly-out (FIFO) operations. Variants are used in other industries, but they are rarely if ever applied in mineral processing to-day for reasons which are unclear. The paper gives examples of the application of each method in concentrators which demonstrate that they have the potential to be useful additions to the mineral engineer’s professional toolbox.CITATION:Napier-Munn, T J, 2014. The article evaluates the convective heat transfer coefficient of ventilation air in a potash mine. The energy balance is obtained through thermal characterization of the ventilation air and rock, allowing for the calculation of heat transfer parameters. Different models for calculating the convective heat transfer coefficient are analyzed. The results indicate that the Pethukov–Kirilov, Gnielinski, and modified Dittus–Boelter models are optimal for this mine. The study also indirectly examines the conductivity of the adjacent rock, suggesting saturation throughout the studied section and the presence of liquid water upwelling in a specific section.

The Federal Coal Mine Health and Safety Act of 1969 requires each mine operator to implement the respirable dust sampling program established by the Secretary of the Interior and the Secretary of Health, Education, and Welfare. This program requires frequent sampling of "high-risk" face workers and periodic sampling of other underground workers. Dust samples are collected by the coal mine operator and weighed at the Bureau's Pittsburgh Field Health Group, and the results are processed by the Bureau's Automatic Data Processing Section located in Denver, Colo. This paper presents the system employed by the Bureau to weigh the dust samples and to process and store the data.

"The Conservative Government 's budget proposals brought forward on December 11, 1979 have been withdrawn, but they are far from dead. On the contrary, a number of those budget proposals, especially the ones which would close loopholes and result in other technical changes being made to the Income Tax Act, should be considered to be alive and well.It is not unreasonable to expect the next government, of whatever political persuasion, to reintroduce many of these technical changes in the next federal budget. For that reason, last December's budget may have offered an interesting preview of what the mining industry and other taxpayers can expect in 1980. It is quite possible that some of these changes may be effective as of the original dates announced in the withdrawn budget proposals.This month, ""Tax Notes"" reviews the main pro visions of Mr. Crosbie's December, 1979 budget, with a primary focus on the changes that would have affected the resource sector.It must be emphasized that all of the budget proposals discussed herein have been withdrawn, that none of them are law and that any actual changes in our tax rules will have to be dealt with by the new Parliament that will be assembled following the February 18 election. December 1979budget withdrawnThe federal budget proposals brought forward by Finance Minister John Crosbie on December II, 1979 were withdrawn as a result of the defeat of the Conservative Government on a motion of non-confidence in the House of Commons on December 13. However, it appears quite possible that at least some of the proposals may be introduced into Parliament at a future date, possibly with retroactive effect.In a press release issued by the Department of Finance, Finance Minister John Crosbie stated that if the Conservative Government is returned to power, it will reintroduce all of the measures contained in his December II budget.Mr. Crosbie stated that all of the income tax measures contained in the budget would be reintroduced, effective on the dates indicated in the Notice of Ways and Means Motion tabled on December II. Some of the more important measures in December II budget, and their effective dates as indicated in the Notice of Ways and Means Motion, are discussed below.The December budget had also introduced or increased excise taxes or duties on gasoline, wines, cosmetics and photofinishing. If the Conservative party is re-elected, these measures will be reintroduced with prospective effect (i.e . effective as of new dates to be announced in the new budget)."

The long and arduous process of bringing aggregate produced in Mexico to the Gulf Coast of the United States really began in the 1970s when the first exploratory trips were taken by Vulcan's geologists. It was not until the middle of the 1980s that all of the elements of the project seemed favorable and the largest capital investment in Vulcan's history was given the green light. The history of the project will be covered along with a discussion of the role that market forecasting played in the process. Is this the first of many or a once in a lifetime project? In July 1987, Vulcan and its joint venture partner broke ground in Mexico for a world-class limestone quarry and crushed stone production facility. This project is the largest ever undertaken by Vulcan's Construction Materials Group, with a total cost of over 200 million dollars -a cost shared equally by Vulcan and its joint venture partner, Ingenieros Civiles Associados, or ICA, a diversified Mexican company which is also the largest construction firm in Latin America.

Coal production during 1963 amounted to 446 mil- lion tons, an anticipated increase of about 6% over the 1962 production of 422 million tons. Electric consumption was 207 million tons, a continuation of its upward trend with an increase of about 7%. The metallurgical market consumed 77 million tons: the industrial market, 96 million tons; and the retail market, 26 million tons. Exports were 46 million tons. Modernization continues in the coal industry as it approaches the mid-1960's. The industry has shown a keen desire to explore and pursue new developments, new concepts and new managerial methods and techniques that have become so vital and important for industrial well-being.

Abstract A division of part of the Canadian Shield into provinces believed to represent former mountain belts is attempted, special emphasis- being laid upon radioactive age determinations, the relation of Archaean to Proterozoic rocks, and the structure of the Grenville province. Original data on the distribution of radioactivity within several batholiths and their connection with ore deposits are' presented. The possible growth of continents and a theory which explains the shape and distribution of the world's younger mountain and island areas are discussed and applied to the Canadian Shield in an attempt to explain how the growth and present structure came about. The relation of the major mining camps of northeastern Ontario to fault zones is discussed in the light of this theory. Introduction The valuable symposium issued by this Institute to celebrate its jubilees emphasizes the important role of major faults in determining the location of many ore deposits in the Canadian Shield. Many of these faults are known to extend for long distances. It is therefore widely appreciated that it would be of great value if the pattern, ages, and causes of these faults were better understood. This would be particularly useful if the relations of the major fault systems to petrological and metallogenic provinces and to former mountain belts could be established. Each year the volume of available data, and hence the chance of reaching a fuller solution of this problem, increases. This article is a review of the present situation. It is accordingly based almost wholly upon the work and ideas of others, which are gratefully acknowledged. Naturally, responsibility for the selection and marshalling of the data is the writer's.

A total of 26 full-scale production blasts at three sites were extensively monitored with sophisticated instrumentation systems to determine the benefits of more accurate detonators. The new and more accurate MS electric Masterdet detonator was tested against conventional detonators to determine any increase in productivity outputs. All blast design parameters between paired blasts were kept as constant as possible with the only difference being the inherent accuracy of both detonator systems.

Oklahoma contains extensive resources of high-purity gypsum that were deposited in the Anadarko and Hollis basins during Permian time. The gypsum resources and reserves are estimated to be about 48 billion short tons and a; located in the western portion of the state. Oklahoma is the largest producer of gypsum products in the United States. The Blaine Formation and the Cloud Chief Gypsum contain several beds of minable thickness. Four stratigraphic units in the Blaine Formation are quarried in Oklahoma. The Shimer, Nescatunga, and Medicine Lodge Members are quarried in northwest Oklahoma. The Van Vacter Member, consisting of three gypsum beds, is quarried in southwest Oklahoma. The Cloud Chief Gypsum is quarried in the west-central part of the state. The gently dipping gypsum in the Blaine Formation generally crops out along low escarpments and is covered in the downdip direction by increasing overburden, consisting of sand, shale, and/or dolomite. Anhydrite occurs in the downdip direction under the thicker overburden. The Cloud Chief Gypsum crops out as hills, which are eroded remnants of a more widespread, massive sulfate unit. All of the gypsum produced in Oklahoma is extracted using quarrying methods. A variety of products are made from gypsum quarried in Oklahoma. The products are manufactured from uncalcined, calcined, and deadburned gypsum. Products vary from raw, ground gypsum used for agriculture, to high-value-added industrial plasters, cements, and fillers produced from calcined gypsum. A sampling of the many products manufactured from Oklahoma gypsumincludes: (1) agricultural-soil amendment; carrier for insecticides, pesticides, and herbicides; calcium supplement in animal feeds; (2) gypsum wallboard-common, fire-resistant, and water-resistant varieties; (3) industrialgypsum plasters-art and casting, pottery and ceramic, molding and tooling, crayons, wall patching; (4) industrial gypsum cements-oil-well cement, high-strength statuary, high-strength tooling, fiber-reinforced architectural, road and bridge repair; (5) food and pharmaceutical-filler and binder in aspirin and other medicines, yeast activator in brewing of beer, moisture absorbent in bread and pizza dough; and (6)portland-cement retarder-ground with clinker to control setting time.
