The U.S. Bureau of Mines, in cooperation with the Iron Range Resources and Rehabilitation Board, investigated the potential of using northeastern Minnesota papermill waste sludges as a binder for Mesabi Range iron ore (taconite) concentrate. Sludges from five different commercial papermill waste treatment operations were evaluated in laboratory tests. Except for the coarsest sludge, all were fairly easy to blend with the taconite concentrate using conventional mixing methods. The coarsest sludge had to be reslurried at 2 pct solids before adding it to the concentrate in order to obtain pellets without visible sludge clumps. Drying and grinding the sludges made them less effective as binders because of a lower degree of rehydration. On a dry weight equivalent basis, twice as much raw sludge binder was required to obtain similar pellet physical properties as with bentonite; however, the pellets made with raw sludge had superior metallurgical properties. Over 30 pct higher reduction rates and over 1500 C higher softening temperatures were obtained with sludge binder than with bentonite. Sludge D, which had the lowest fiber and the highest alkali metal content, resulted in the lowest reducibility enhancement. Even though more raw sludge was required than bentonite, the sludges have virtually no value, and therefore may provide a cost-effective additive binder for producing improved metallurgical-quality pellets. Large-scale testing has not been done to confirm these laboratory results.

This paper provides a new approach to optimize the production planning in underground mines by means of evolutionary algorithms. Firstly, genetic algorithm is used to reach the global optimization in planning. Then, evolutionary programming is employed to obtain the partial optimization for each year. Mining claims must have a discovery of a valuable mineral deposit to be valid. When required, a Federal government mineral examiner makes a determination of validity and recommendations thereof to authorized management officials. The examiner should show whether or not an existing mining operation, or a proposed operation have economic viability. This is accomplished through an analysis of legal entities, land status and use, geologic and mineralogic relationships, and mining, milling and processing techniques considered in an appropriate economic evaluation framework. A framework involves market and market entry studies, reserve analyses, all costs analysis, royalty buyouts, tax structure, discount rate of return, and escalation and risk factors. An income approach to value is then used by means of a simple or complex discounted cash flow (DCF) analysis to certify validity. Whether one claim is owned by a single miner, or hundreds of claims are owned by a large corporation, thorough, fair, consistent, and appropriate economic concepts should be applied by the mineral examiner.

[During the past year the Metallurgical Fundamentals Section gave about an equal amount of time to the experimental determination of fundamental thermodynamic constants and to the demonstration of the application of such data to more directly practical metallurgical problems. The first division of the work - the actual experimental measurements of typical thermodynamic constants - was carried out an two problems, termed ?continuing? programs, namely, (1) measurements of Specific Heats at Low Temperatures and (2) Measurements of Heats of Formation and Free Energies. Specific substances chosen for investigation are classified as (n) those that have been the subject of requests for information from the industry and that, upon examination, seem of sufficient practical importance to justify study, and (b) compounds that are difficult to treat metallurgically, or whose specific thermodynamic properties have not yet been determined satisfactorily and for which accurate data might suggest improved or new methods of Metallurgical treatment, or (c) materials recognized as belonging to a social class with exceptional thermodynamic properties and, hence, of scientific as well as technical importance.]

"The profile of the respondents was that of a professional responsible for communications, community relations or corporate social responsibility programs. By targeting a consistent professional profile it was possible to ensure that most respondents had a similar degree of responsibility and/or decision-making ability related to the application of communication technologies. The research attempted to be inclusive and attention was paid to interview respondents from both genders and from indigenous groups.4, 5 A codebook of 80 themes was developed that highlighted recurring topics; for example, codes were created to identify risks, benefits, policies and learning process of using social media and included topics that were repeatedly emphasized by respondents (i.e. age, efficiency and language). Both manifest coding (i.e. coding of the visible content, such as specific words) and latent coding (i.e. coding of underlying meanings) was undertaken (Creswell [13]). The codes were used in the qualitative analysis using ATLAS.ti software and network views were created to illustrate the relationship between major themes of this research. There are limitations to this research, largely related to the changing nature of the Internet and communication technologies. There is also a geographic limitation to the application of this research because most of the data was gathered primarily from Canadian sources.6 Different levels of Internet penetration, or limited access to computers or mobile devices, and low literacy rates may reduce the applicability of the research in countries with low Internet penetration. A more systematic process to selecting candidates may have helped bring balance to the final list of interview respondents. For example, most of the corporate respondents were from medium and large companies and there was not adequate representation of small mineral exploration companies. The research did not probe into social media applications by different business groups within the mining sector, such as smelting and processing."

The need for lightweight aggregate for use in concrete products ,and structures has caused the Bureau of Mines to undertake an investigation to determine the availability of suitable raw materials and to study methods, procedures, and equipment to supply that need. Evidence is at hand to prove that the shortage of lightweight aggregate is nationwide. A survey recently covered in a report (13)5/ by the Construction Branch of the National Housing Agency has pointed out the locations in which lightweight aggregates are produced. A study of this information discloses that the producing centers are widespread, and that certain areas, notably the region east of the Mississippi River, and especially the sections along the Atlantic coast line and the Southeastern States, have only a few such plants. Certainly, many localities are badly in need of installations equipped to provide an ample supply of high-grade lightweight aggregate. The work undertaken by the Bureau of Mines includes investigation of the use of clays, shales, slate wastes, coal-mine wastes, diatomite-clay combinations, and various other 'mineral mixtures as possible raw materials. Likewise, special consideration has been given to the development' of equipment and techniques to produce the lightweight products.

This study investigates the evolution of dimensional properties of grinding products, namely, the mass, the surface area, the length, and the number of particle distributions with the energy input in a ball mill. The size analysis of the mill products enables the calculation of the mass distribution of each material at predetermined size classes and then the determination of the other dimensional properties by taking into consideration the geometry of the particles. Based on the distribution of dimensional properties, an effort was made to determine whether the grinding products are fractal in nature. The effect of material type and grinding conditions on the relationship between the dimensional properties and the specific energy input was also investigated. Special importance was assigned to the study of the specific surface area and the surface area production rate, both during the initial grinding stages and at higher energy levels. The determination of the surface area production rate allows the identification of the grinding limit and the maximum specific surface area which could theoretically be achieved. This approach has as ultimate objective the maximization of energy efficiency and subsequently the minimization of the high grinding cost.

A group of mining men attending a recent workshop on "Analysis and Control in the Canadian Minerals Industry" issued, among others, the following statement: "Slurry flow measurement is considered to be one of the most inaccurate in the industry. A special program should be launched to encourage development." In response, this paper starts off the program with an investigation of the principles and the conventional practice of slurry flow measurement and identifies weaknesses which cause inaccuracies. Then it follows with descriptions of nonconventional systems in use at various locations and comments on their degree of success. The paper concludes that relatively simple methods, which it describes, can be applied to obtain an accurate slurry flow measurement.

In this paper the production and stability of crystalline scorodite (FeAsO4·2H2O) is discussed both on the basis of previously published work as well as recent work performed in our laboratory. The production of scorodite, especially from arsenic-rich and iron-deficient sulphate solutions offers a number of operational advantages such as high arsenic content, stoichiometriciron demand, and excellent dewatering characteristics. In addition to hydrothermal production of scorodite the work done over the last 10 years in our laboratory has determined that it is feasible to produce scorodite by step-wise lime neutralization at 90°C. The atmospheric scorodite possesses the same structural and solubility characteristics with the hydrothermally produced scorodite. Long term equilibration tests (up to 66 weeks) in the pH range 5 to 9 and temperatures from 22 °C to 75 °C revealed scorodite to undergo slow incongruent dissolutionyielding a highly metastable nano-sized 2-line ferrihydrite phase. The equilibrium arsenic concentration with this phase was 0.35, 0.96 and 5.87 mg/L at pH 5, 6, and 7 respectively at 22°C. In the presence of gypsum slightly lower concentrations were measured, this being more pronounced at pH>7. It was tentatively deduced that a Fe-Ca-AsO4 association (in the form of a phase resembling the mineral yukonite) contributes to the lowering of As concentration. Finally thermodynamic calculations determined that scorodite is stable in the presence of ferrihydriteunder oxic conditions up to pH 6.75 at 22 °C or higher pH at lower temperature and gypsum-saturated solutions. "Float dust deposits in coal mine return airways pose a risk in the event of a methane ignition. Controlling airborne dust prior to deposition in the return would make current rock dusting practices more effective and reduce the risk of coal-dust-fueled explosions. The goal of this U.S. National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health study is to determine the potential of open-air water sprays to reduce concentrations of airborne float coal dust, smaller than 75 µm in diameter, in longwall face airstreams. This study evaluated unconfined water sprays in a featureless tunnel ventilated at a typical longwall face velocity of 3.6 m/s (700 fpm). Experiments were conducted for two nozzle orientations and two water pressures for hollow cone, full cone, flat fan, air atomizing and hydraulic atomizing spray nozzles. Gravimetric samples show that airborne float dust removal efficiencies averaged 19.6 percent for all sprays under all conditions. The results indicate that the preferred spray nozzle should be operated at high fluid pressures to produce smaller droplets and move more air. These findings agree with past respirable dust control research, providing guidance on spray selection and spray array design in ongoing efforts to control airborne float dust over the entire longwall ventilated opening. IntroductionCoal mining processes produce airborne dust that naturally deposits on the floor, roof and ribs of mine airways. These fine dust particles, termed float coal dust when smaller than 75 µm in diameter, are deposited in the return entries of coal mines and can be reentrained by pressure waves induced by methane-air explosions (Rice et al., 1911; Nagy, 1981; U.S. National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH), 2006). These particles are also those most likely to participate in coal-dust-fueled explosions, which can potentiate and propagate explosions resulting in extensive damage. In order to meet compliance requirements of at least 80 percent incombustible content in the composition of material deposited in mine entries (U.S. Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA), 2016), coal mines apply an inerting agent, specifically, rock dust (Harris et al., 2009). Should methane be present in the mine atmosphere, the required fraction of incombustible content is further increased by 0.4 percent for each 0.1 percent methane. The removal of airborne float coal dust (AFCD) prior to deposition is an approach intended to make current rock dusting practices more effective by increasing the proportion of inert material to combustible material, resulting in a lower risk of coal-dust-fueled explosions."

The purpose of Volume II of this study is to provide a general plan for the pilot testing of two materials which could be used to tag explosives for both pre- and postdetonation identification and of tracing techniques which would thereby aid the investigator of an unauthorized bombing or explosion in being able to determine the source and/or user of the explosives. Volume I described the planning factors by which the tagging of explosives could be implemented on a National basis. 1.2 BACKGROUND Tagging explosives at the time of manufacture with a taggant material that could survive detonation, be recovered, and provide an investigative lead has been seriously studied for several years. This concept has gained widespread support among many law enforcement groups because of the scant clues that can presently be found among bombing residue.

The main tectonic elements in Myanmar are a late Mesozoic and Cenozoic magmatic arc system in the west, repeated in northern Myanmar by more than 300 km of dextral movement on the Sagaing Fault, and the back-arc continental region affected by early and late Mesozoic orogenies, in the east. Historically most lode gold production has been from latest Cretaceous high-grade mesothermal veins and derived placers in the Wuntho and Tagaung-Myitkyina segments of the magmatic arc. Placer deposits in the Ayerwaddy River north of Myitkyina are currently worked by more than 100-bucket dredges. South of Wuntho, the magmatic arc and Pegu Yoma fold belt host epithermal gold with associated As, Sb and Zn in mid-Tertiary marine sediments. MyanmarÆs most productive lode gold deposit, the Kyaukpahto mine, lies within a north-trending district east of the magmatic arc and north of Mandalay. Here mineralisation and associated jasperoidal silica occur in Eocene sandstones and Permian and Triassic carbonates. Possibly this district continues southeastwards, across the Sagaing Fault, as sediment-hosted Sb Au and locally skarn Au mineralisation within a 1100 km long fold-thrust belt. Also present in the back-arc region are sandstone-hosted Au Cu in a Palaeozoic slate belt, and gold and stratabound gold-base metal mineralisation in the medial metamorphic belt. While untested targets remain in the magmatic arc, particularly for high sulphidation Au, the best potential is clearly within the back-arc slate and fold-thrust belts in the western part of the Shan Plateau and in northeastern-most Myanmar.

Since there are abundant supplies of ores and fuels to keep prices down, at least in peacetime scenarios, future needs may be as much political and social as technical and economic. Engineers and economists will develop new and innovative ways to find, mine, process and pay for mineral deposits. Pressure from governments and non-governmental organizations and the public will combine with market forces to provide opportunities for highly competitive, risk-taking enterprises who can leverage the qualities of their orebodies and employees by being good neighbors and partners.

This report describes the potential for utilization of satellite observations for remote sensing of mine waste disposal areas. Four study sites consisting of metal and nonmetal mining areas in different climatic and physiographic regions of contigous United States were used in this investigation. The mine waste disposal sites consisted of mining of phosphates in Florida, copper in Arizona, silver in Idaho, and coal in West Virginia. Landsat satellite multispectral scanner observations were used together with aerial photographs, ground surveys, U.S. Geological Survey maps, and other ancillary information. Landsat digital data were categorized using automated supervised classification algorithms and an image analysis system. Detailed description of automated classification techniques employed and the accuracy attained is provided together with the results of manual interpretations. The inventory of areas distrubed for phosphate mining and a change detection investigation for-Polk County Florida were also undertaken during this study.

This report presents the results of a task to complete a final design of a remote controlled hi-roof bolting machine for high roof areas in coal mines. The project was begun by visiting several coal mines to become familiar with roof fall areas. Several machine concepts were generated and presented to the design committee for criticism. A preliminary design was completed, as covered by this report. A Final Design and Final Report will be issued incorporating the committee comments at the Preliminary Design review and comments received concerning this Preliminary Design Report.
