Zinc is a component of many input materials used in various pyrometallurgical processes, for example primary lead and zinc production from Pb/Zn ores and recycling processes dealing with zinc-containing residues (e.g., copper recycling, WAELZ process). Hence, zinc and its compounds are present in the respective metallurgical vessels and interact with the refractory lining. In the present work the zinc attack on the refractories out of various primary and secondary furnaces is briefly introduced and discussed. At the prevailing processing temperatures in the metallurgical vessels, zinc oxide is highly corrosive for the brick components. The knowledge of the wear behavior is based not only on a detailed chemical and mineralogical characterization carried out on provided post mortem samples, but also on FactSage calculations. This together with results obtained by practical testing in the RHI pilot plant represents an important prerequisite for product development and brick selection for the individual customer application.

The effect of microwave irradiation on grinding property of coal was studied by using Hardgrove grindability index tester. Superior grindability of coal was obtained to varying extent after microwave irradiation treatment. The variation in microstructure of pulverized coal during microwave irradiation was observed by utilizing scanning electronic microscope (SEM). The results indicated that the different microwave absorbance of minerals and carbon matrix led to cracks on their interface, by which coal particles were further pulverized and therefore the granularity of coal powder was reduced. Due to the different formation process of various coals, bituminite and anthracite are very different in physical and chemical properties. According to the content of coal pulverization, it can found that microwave irradiation has a stronger pulverizing effect on bituminite in comparison to anthracite.

"The damping capacity of the Fe-12 mass % Cr-6 to 30 mass % Mn alloys has been investigated. Particularly the effects of microstrucutre composed of the phases of a , a ' , y , and e on the damping capacity have been clarified. Various fraction of these phases were formed depending on the Mn content and cold work degree. The combination of 22 mass % Mn and 50% cold rolling formed the largest volume fraction of e martensite and showed the highest damping capacity. The other phases of a, a' and y had very small effect on the increasing of damping capacity.IntroductionFe-Mn alloys are known to be one of the high damping capacity materials [l-3]. In the present research, the damping capacity of the Fe-12 mass % Cr-6 to 30 mass % Mn alloys, in which 12% Cr is added for the improvement of corrosion resistance of the Fe-Mn alloys, has been investigated. Particularly the effects of microstrucutre composed of various phases of a (bee), a ' (bet martensite), y (fee), and e (hcp martensite) on the damping capacity have been clarified. The results of preliminary research on Fe-Cr-Mn alloys are reported by Igata et al. [4] Various volume fraction of these phases were formed depending on the Mn content and cold work degree. The combination of 22 % Mn and 50% cold rolling formed the largest fraction of e martensite and the measurement indicated clearly that e martensite had the largest effect on the damping capacity. The other phases of a ' y and a I had very small effect on the increasing of damping capacity."

An investigation of the effects of ozone and ozone-induced hydroxyl radical on reducing whole effluent toxicity is described and discussed relative to the application of ozone for industrial water treatment. Results from operation of an ozone system treating industrial effluent from a lead and zinc mine in Colorado are presented. The mine discharges 1,000 gpm of wastewater into a tributary of the Arkansas River and has historically exceeded Whole Effluent Toxicity (WET) limits and on occasion has exceeded numeric limits for copper, ammonia, and cyanide. Based on results of a Toxicity Identification Evaluation (TIE) conducted on the effluent and individual process waste streams, the source of effluent toxicity is believed to be primarily associated with organic reagents used in the milling process. Based on test results, an applied ozone to COD ratio of 3: 1 by weight and a contact time of 30 minutes was found to be effective for reducing whole effluent toxicity at pH 11 but not at pH 7, indicating oxidation by hydroxyl radical to be the dominant mechanism responsible for toxic-ity reduction. At an applied ozone to COD ratio of 3:1 and a pH of 11, toxicity was improved from 0 percent survival to 100 percent survival for Ceriodaphnia dubia and fathead minnow (Pimephales promelas) based

The use of red mud, a waste product of the ?Bayer? process for bauxite refining, was investigated for its arsenic removal effectiveness from aqueous solutions under various conditions. Red mud efficiently removed As(III) between a pH range of 7.6 and 9; and As(V) in the pH range between 5.5 and 6. Pre-washing of the red mud with salt water considerably improved its arsenic adsorption capabilities. With appropriate red mud dosage, the residual arsenic in solution was decreased below the regulated acceptable arsenic limit (0.1 mg/L) from aqueous industrial wastes. The arsenic adsorption followed first-order rate kinetics and fitted the Langmuir isotherm model. Results suggest that red mud is potentially a useful adsorbent for removal of arsenic from contaminated water or industrial waste solutions.

"In this paper, pure bainite ductile iron and their alloying form of 0.2wt% niobium were prepared by a controlled cooling heat-treatment. The effect of niobium alloying on the microstructure, hardness and impact toughness of bainite ductile iron was studied. The results show that adding niobium effectively improves the hardness and toughness of bainite ductile iron. The hardness and the impact toughness of niobium-alloyed bainite ductile iron were investigated by varying the temperature at which samples were fed to the incubator.IntroductionThere are two essential methods to prepare the bainite ductile iron: isothermal quenching [I-31, and alloying [4• 51• Isothermal quenching process is very time and energy consumable, concerned as a high cost technique for mass production. Besides, there are certain limitations on the size and shape of castings in this process. In addition, it potentially harms the environment. As for the alloying, Ni, Mo, and Cu have to be utilized to obtain bainite. However, the large demand and high cost of Ni makes it not feasible in practice.It is well known that niobium can promote the formation of carbon compound, and improves the stability ofundercooled austenite, which is preferred to the increase of the hardenability. Previous studies showed that niobium could refine the grain and improve the mechanical properties of gray cast iron [6-81 • Therefore, in the present work, the effects of niobium and the temperature at which samples were fed to the incubator on the microstructures and properties of niobium alloyed bainite ductile iron were investigated."

"India’s present annual marine fish catch is 2.9 million tonnes and its low value fishes such as sardines, sciaenids, goat fishes and leiognathids amount to 60%. The fish meal obtained from these resources is mainly used presently as an ingredient in live stock and aquaculture feeds. These fishes offer vast scope in the production of pet foods. Pet foods prepared with leiognathid fish meal (60%), maize flour (10%), wheat flour (5%), vitamin and mineral mixture (5%) and water (20%) and experimented with 50 cats and 50 dogs were found to be ideal. Depending on protein level, feeds are being formulated for experimenting with more number of pet animals. "The potential of hydrocarbon resources in the Arctic oil and gas provinces is enormous. Oil, gas and condensate constitute the basis of mineral resource base of the shelf zone of the Russian Arctic; summary volume of hydrocarbons exceeds 100 billion tons of conventional fuel. Only in the Shtockman gas condensate field in the Barents Sea explored balance reserves equal to 3.2 trillion m3 of gas. It is necessary to establish a special regime of nature management in the Arctic. Environmentally oriented economic activities should be more actively stimulated. The Energy Strategy plans that starting from 2010 in the Barents and Pechora Seas up to 10 million tons of oil and 50 billion m3 of gas will be extracted, reaching the level of 30 million tons of oil and 130 billion m3 of gas in 2020. This task cannot be solved without intensification of geological exploration on the continental shelf. A process for large scale chromatographic separations using a continuous chromatography technique is described. The process combines the advantages of large scale batch fixed column displacement chromatography with conventional analytical or elution continuous annular chromatography (CAC) to enable large scale displacement chromatography to be performed on a continuous basis (CDC). Such large scale, continuous displacement chromatography separations have not been reported in the literature. The process is demonstrated with the ion exchange separation of a binary lanthanide (Nd/Pr) mixture. The process is, however, applicable to any displacement chromatography separation that can be performed using conventional batch, fixed column chromatography.

The amount of secondary batteries are increasing about 15% by year. Among these batteries, it can be highlighted the NiCd ones, due to their high consumption. In Brazil, the consumption of NiCd batteries grown quickly in the last 5 years, due to the dissemination of cellular telephones and other electronic devices. The first step of a process to recycle spent NiCd batteries is the pretreatment through unit operations of mining treatment. The aim of this work is to define a physical pretreatment to conditioning the waste to a pyrornetallurgical recycling process of spent NiCd batteries used in cellular telephones. Batteries were disassembled by hand to release the different components. The studied batteries are basically composed (by weight) of: 78% nucleus, 18% plastic case and 2% circuits. The grinding of the batteries was performed by knife mill and also by hammer mill. After grinding the material was screened and submitted to a magnetic separator.

"During the horizontal spin casting of rolls, vibrations and mould deformations seems to have a significant effect on the final quality of the product. Sources for vibrations can be found in the poor roundness and a static imbalance of the chill itself. The bending of the mould axis is also considered. Both, vibrations and axis bending, are used as an input for CFD simulations of the flow dynamics of the liquid metal inside the rotating cylinder. The aim is to study the feedback of the free surface behavior in terms of wave propagation and various wave shapes. Introduction The horizontal spin casting process (HSC) is a casting process that has several advantages over the traditional gravity casting processes. Centrifugally cast products have a high degree of metallurgical purity and homogeneous microstructure. A significant gain is observed for the rupture strength, the rupture strain, and the Young modulus. These properties naturally depend on the centrifugal force and thus, the best mechanical properties can be found at the largest distance from axis of rotation. However proper selection of the angular frequency has to be done in order to prevent the so-called ""metal rain"" i.e. metal droplets can fall down from the upper part of the cylinder due to a too weak centrifugal acceleration. In the same time excessive speeds can lead to the appearance of longitudinal cracks caused by the hoop stress in the initially solidified layer. From empirical knowledge other parameters have important influence on the casting products, it includes the pouring temperature, the pouring rate, the mould coating etc. Recently the presence of natural or forced vibrations have been identified as possible additional factors to be taken into account [1-2]."

Chile is the most important copper producer in the world and the mining sector plays a key value in its economy. However, at present the country does not have a satisfactory set of regulations about closure and restoration of mining operations. In our country many mining operations will, in the near future, shut down their activities, therefore, it is of utmost importance to elaborate and enforce a set of regulations to prevent risks and to protect the environment. The present study is focused on reviewing and analyzing the existing national regulations about the closure of mining operations and preparing a comparative analysis with other international regulations of countries with mining experience. The final results of the study will be a legal proposal to regulate the closure of mining operations in Chile, aiming at minimizing the potential environmental adverse impact, internalizing the social costs by the relevant operators and defining all aspects of liability for the environmental damage.

An investigation of gold distribution in the mill products of Sar Cheshmeh beneficiation plant demonstrates that on average 44% of the gold is routinely recovered as a by-product in the copper concentrate, and the remaining is lost to the tailing. In order to evaluate the causes of gold losses, the distribution and mode of gold occurrence in the Sar Cheshmeh ore and mill products were studied. Searching for gold within samples and within individual grains of sulphide minerals was carried out by SEM in the backscattered electron mode and SIMS, respectively. The mineralogical distribution of gold revealed by microbeam techniques were combined with the results of relevant metallurgical experiments including, sizing, heavy liquid separation, and diagnostic leaching tests, and the nature and location of gold in the ore and mill products were determined. The combined results of the experimental approaches pursued suggest that while there are some gold in solid solution and/or -colloidal size within sulphides of the Sar Cheshmeh ores, "visible" gold is the principal form of gold occurrence at Sar Cheshmeh.

"The present study evaluated the feasibility of using iron species generated by electrocoagulation (EC) as an adsorbent for removal As(III/As(V) from aqueous media. The full potential of EC was evident in that more than 99 percent of arsenic was removed without addition of chemical reagents. The adsorbent iron-species generated by EC was characterized by Chemical Analyses, X-Ray Diffraction and Scanning Electron Microscopy. The experimental data were correlated by employing a Langmuir adsorption isotherm. Thermodynamic parameters such as ?H o , ?S o and ?Go were calculated. The adsorption process was found to be exothermic and spontaneous.1. IntroductionArsenic contamination in potable water supplies is a serious health problem in many countries around the world. Groundwater arsenic contamination in La Comarca Lagunera Mexico was first reported 30 years ago [1]. Arsenic concentration has been found in well water from several communities ranging from 0.25 to 1.0 ppm. The elevated concentration of arsenic in water, above that originating from natural sources, has been attributed to the use of organoarsenical pesticides in the cotton fields and also to the millions of tons of waste slag generated at a local lead smelter [1]. The main arsenic species present in natural waters are arsenate ions 3- 4 AsO (oxidation state V) and arsenic ions H3AsO3, - 2 3 H AsO and 2- 3 HAsO oxidation state III). However, As(V) ions are most prevalent in oxygenated water while As(III) is found for anaerobic conditions, such as in well water or in groundwater. Conventional methods of arsenic removal rely on chemical-based treatment with lime, alum coagulation, iron coagulation and chemical oxidation. Other processes used with varying degrees of success include adsorption onto activated carbon, reverse osmosis, nanofiltration, manganese dioxide, magnetite and ionexchange resins [1-3]. These conventional processes generate a considerable quantity of secondary hazardous waste such as solid sludge, which also pose serious environmental problems. These drawbacks have forced various industries to search for effective, alternative treatment technologies for arsenic with a preference for electrochemical methods."

A laboratory study was conducted on the separation of Zn, Pb, Cu and Ag from a finely dissem-inated interlocked silver-rich multimetal sulphidc ore. These are often difficult to separate from each other by flotation. The thermodynamic calculations of Zn-S-O, Cu-S-O systems at different tem¬peratures were presented on predominance diagrams. Based on these diagrams the optimum temperature and gas composition were selected for roasting. The results of separating Zn, Cu from calcine by neutral leaching and acid leaching were found to be satisfactory. The distribution of silver in the roasting and leaching processes were tested. A flow sheet was proposed.

High temperature softening behaviours of iron blast furnace feeds (sinter, lump and pellet) have been determined under conditions simulated to the blast furnace. The industrial samples were packed with sandwich structure (coke / ore / coke) in graphite crucibles and 30 CO / 70 Ar gas mixture was blowing directly through the bottom of the crucibles. The displacement and temperature were continuously recorded simultaneously to construct the softening curves. Separated quenching experiments were also carried out at selected temperatures under the same gas atmosphere. The temperatures were selected corresponding to the turning points of the softening curves. The phase assemblages and composition of each phase in quenched samples were analysed by Electron Probe X-ray Microanalysis (EPMA). The proportion of the liquid formed at temperature was obtained from the backscattered electron images. The deformation characteristics of these complex multi-phase materials are shown to be related directly to the phase assemblages of the samples and the microstructures. FactSage was also used to assist the predictions of liquid / solid fractions and their compositions.

"Environmental protection is becoming over the years an increasingly significant problem of mankind. Up to the last decade the only way to make the domestic waste harmless in Bulgaria was deposition on uncontrolled landfills without undertaking actions for protection of the soils. This also caused pollution to spread into the surface and underground waters and that is why actions are now undertaken for remediation of contaminated soils. This is achieved by developing projects for the closing down of polluted sites. In the present paper some projects for closing down of polluted areas are discussed. The actual conditions are examined and project decisions for preventing the surface waters from penetrating into the waste are presented. In this way the pollution of the soil is stopped and the soils are gradually remediate.IntroductionSoil is the topmost layer of the earth crust. It consists of mineral particles, organic substances, water, air and living organisms and is an extremely complex and changing living environment. Soil is a non-renewable natural resource which is of considerable importance in a number of crucial processes (production of foods, storing, filtrating and turnover of many substances, including water, carbon and nitrogen). It also serves as a basis for human activities, shaping the landscape, ground on which cultural heritage is built, and source of raw materials. These functions of soil must be protected both because of their social and economic significance and from the point of view of environmental protection.The processes of erosion, loss of organic substances, compaction, salination and contamination contribute to the degrading of soils accompanied by a negative impact on human health, natural ecosystems and changes in climate, as well as on the economy. All these make it necessary to protect soils from contamination. Over the last years intensive work started in Bulgaria for the construction of controlled sanitary landfills for rendering municipal solid waste harmless. Pursuant to Bulgarian legislation, in these controlled sanitary landfills measures are undertaken for protecting the soils from contamination through appropriate project decisions – the filtration of the products from the biological decomposition of waste into the adjacent sites (soils) and, therefore, the contamination of the surface and underground waters is prevented. At the same time the purity of air is maintained, human health is protected and conditions are created for including the controlled sanitary landfills into the surrounding landscape."

In order for Philippines Associated Smelting and Refining Corporation (PASAR) Corporation to remain a leader in the copper smelting and refining industry, continuous improvements in plant technology are required. Reliable performance of plant equipment is essential for a competitive smelting operation. PASAR is constantly searching for the best equipment and technology to allow us to manufacture products more efficiently. When the Smelter was commissioned in 1993, the Flash Furnace off-gas treatment system was a constant source of problems. There were frequent shut-downs of the electrostatic precipitator due to material buildups on the discharge electrodes and collecting plates. In 1998, the precipitator was successfully upgraded to eliminate the buildup problems and to increase the collection efficiency. The upgrade greatly reduced down time and maintenance, and the enhanced collection efficiency also eliminated pluggage problems and material losses in the Acid Plant. This extensive precipitator upgrade was accomplished during a 30-day Smelter turnaround.
