The Hog Heaven property presently is under development for a combination of open pit and underground mining, followed by recovery of the silver and gold by cyanidation. Barometric pressure changes affect air density, leading to change in the mass of the gas in the gob. When the barometric pressure decreases, the volume of gas in the gob expands, while the volume of gas contracts when the barometric pressure increases, a process which causes the gob to “breathe” out and in. Although the concept of gob “breathing” is simple, its effect on spontaneous heating of coal in the gob area is not clear. In this study, computational fluid dynamic (CFD) simulations were conducted to model the spontaneous heating of coal in the longwall gob area under measured barometric pressure changes. A single longwall panel using a bleederless ventilation system was simulated. If there is no barometric pressure change, the intake airflow rate is equal to the return airflow rate. When the barometric pressure changes, these two airflow rates are no longer equal, and the difference between the two airflow rates represents the airflow rate the gob breathes in and out. The effect of inflow and outflow of gas on the potential spontaneous heating in the gob was investigated using the CFD model developed in our previous study. The effect of barometric pressure changes on the spontaneous heating was found to be dependent on the gob permeability and the coal oxidation rate. The effect of barometric pressure changes on oxygen concentrations in the gob was also examined.

Getting the best match between truck and haul road requires examination of many factors and their effect on the bottom line. Most mines use a bottom line measure based in some way on cost per ton of material moved. This measure focuses on the two components of truck haulage cost per ton: productivity (or performance) and operating cost. Productivity can be measured or predicted for specific tasks using either field measurement or modelling. Individual tasks can be combined to provide a larger scale, longer term net figure for total mine output. True cost is more difficult to capture as they are time and task oriented and can be influenced by a summation of factors over a truck lifetime. For example, "allocated" costs, such as owning (depreciation) and some repair costs, are spread over long periods of time. Other cost, such as fuel and tires can be tied more directly to certain tasks such as fuel and tire cost. This paper focuses on the more direct, task-oriented factors that affect truck productivity and cost.

Pyrometallurgical products from lime roasting of refractory gold ores, pyrite, and arsenopyrite have been examined for their mineralogy, porosity, permeability, retention of contaminant sulfur and arsenic, and potential effectiveness of gold extraction. Cathodoluminescence microscopy, supplemented by X-ray diffraction and scanning electron microscopy-energy dispersive analysis study, has shown that the products phases have characteristic cathodoluminescence properties as follows: anhydrite (CaS04), deep blue; unreacted portlandite (Ca(OH)2), deep purple; oldhamite (CaS), light yellow to rarely pink or orange; a sulfur-rich, arsenic-poor phase, violet; an arsenic-rich, sulfur-poor phase, non-CL. Within the temperature range examined (400-850°C), hematite exhibits greater porosity and permeability at the intermediate roast temperatures of 600-650°C.

The final 1995 figures on industrial sand and gravel have not yet been compiled by the US Geological Survey (USGS). There is usually about a nine-month lag time in receiving and compiling this information. However, USGS estimates that domestic production of industrial sand and gravel will increase about 4% to 28.2 Mt(31 million st). The average unit price is expected to increase as well. The top five producers during 1995 were Unimin, US Silica, Fairmount Minerals, Oglebay Norton and Morie Co. Glass manufacturing for containers, automobiles and buildings was mixed during 1995. Containers, the largest consumer of silica sand, remained steady, with regional increases. However, silica use in glass containers face increased competition from plastic and recycled glass (cullet). It was reported that the Pepsi Cola announced plans to replace glass containers with plastic during 1996.

"The high virgin horizontal in situ stress field in the Sydney Basin and its impact on civil engineering projects is a well-known and accepted phenomenon found in significant literature (e.g., Pells, 2013). The prevailing high-stress effects depend on many factors — rock quality, tunnel orientation, proximity of geological features to tunnel crown, size and shape of opening, depth of excavation and stress magnitude. The behavior of the rock mass under high in situ stress conditions can cause stress fracturing and consequent dilation of the tunnel periphery, resulting in rock spalling at the tunnel crown/ invert or raveling of rock blocks on the tunnel sidewall. This type of failure is of a brittle nature and may create construction and safety risks during tunnel excavation, if it occurs behind the excavation face where ground support has already been installed. Therefore, the associated risks need to be managed during construction. This paper presents the design strategy adopted to mitigate these adverse tunneling conditions for the WestConnex Project to-date. Overview of the WestConnex M4 East and new M5 tunnel projectsWestConnex is one of the New South Wales government’s key infrastructure projects. This 33 km (20.5 mile) project aims to ease congestion and connect communities and is the largest integrated transport and urban revitalization project in Australia. It was a key recommendation of the State Infrastructure Strategy released in October 2012. It brings together a number of important road projects, which, together, form a vital link in Sydney’s Orbital Network. These road projects include a widening of the M4 east of Parramatta, a duplication of the M5 East, and new sections of motorway to provide a connection between these two key corridors. The WestConnex project includes a number of stages: Stage 1a: M4 Widening; Stage 1b: M4 East; Stage 2: New M5; and Stage 3: M4–M5 Link. The tunnel design referenced in this paper relates to Stage 1b and Stage 2 of the WestConnex Project (Fig. 1)."

Ongoing economic success for mining companies is dramatically enhanced when they really know what they are harvesting, such that they can accurately forecast their head grades for any time period in excess of a month. This is an uncommon experience. It is a very common scenario for resource/reserve estimates to overstate the concentration (grade). Grade is a critical input of revenue, and hence, it is to cashflow projections. With the current direction being taken by the legal climate, it is no longer adequate for directors to accept the resource/reserve estimates of experts at face value. This is because resource/reserve estimates are the foundation of primary mineral economic decisions. Directors of mining assets need to undertake their own due diligence analysis of these estimates, in the best interest of themselves, and the company's shareholders. In the light of the industry's past achievements, this is quite a challenge. This paper suggests a set of new objective tools for directors to undertake an overview of the unique commodity concentration pattern and assess associated economic dynamics of each mineralization. These tools allow the examination of global graphical trends that can be helpful to directors and others in undertaking due diligence of resource/reserve statements. Ensure that it smells right.

A comprehensive project has been completed at the University of British Columbia that focused on the development of a commercially competitive composite cable bolt. Laboratory evaluation consisted of pull tests, preliminary shear tests, grout column testing and scanning electron microscope evaluation of the composite cable bolt. Field implementation at five underground mines throughout Canada were completed for technical and overall performance evaluation of the new product. The project began in 1989 under the sponsorship of HDRK Ltd., a consortium of mining companies including Inco, Noranda and Falconbridge Ltd. The objective was to develop a cuttable cable bolt that would serve as support for a continuous miner within a hardrock environment (Mah, 1994). The bolt was required to be cuttable by a continuous roadheader without adverse effects to equipment, personnel and the milling process. From the beginning, the focus was to employ existing cable bolt installation technology (Goris et al., 1994) whereby the cable bolts are grouted within a 4.8-cm-diam (1.08-in.diam) or larger employing a portland cement grout having a water:cement ratio between 0.35:1 to 0.4:1.

Limestone quarry Vijenac, is one of the key limestone producers in B&H. Conventional massive drilling and blasting is the technique applied for limestone exploitation. Utilized blasting scheme causes appearance of large oversize stone pieces, uncontrolled flying stone and undesirable seismic effects. In order to reduce or eliminate exposed disadvantages and to improve environment in the area of Vijenac quarry, an innovative blasting scheme was tested. Conventional blasting scheme was changed from single row, deep inclined blast holes combined with two lines short horizontal holes to multi row, inclined blast holes combined with a single line short horizontal blastholes. Applied innovative blasting scheme reduces negative blasting impact on the environment through safer working conditions, reduced amount of dust after blasting, reduced explosive and energy consumption, reduced appearance of explosive gasses and reduced earth and air vibrations as the result of seismic effects.

For at least 5500 years man has been matching wits with Nature to find better methods of extracting this most common, yet essential, metal from her, grasp. And, during nearly all of this period, the vertical shaft furnace has played a principle role in this dramatic struggle.

"Methane gas explosions in a longwall coal mine can originate from in or around the gob and can seriously harm nearby workers and equipment. In order to fully understand the explosion flame and pressure wave propagation in the mine, it is important to investigate methane flame propagation in confined spaces as well as flame interaction with rock rubble and other mine structures. The latter can lead to enhanced turbulence causing high-speed deflagrations and/or detonations. Researchers ignited methane-air mixtures in horizontal, cylindrical reactors that contained inserts to simulate various gob characteristics. Rock surface topology and ignition location were investigated. Results show rock surface roughness increased fluid motion, thereby increasing methane flame front propagation velocity, overall pressure rise of the explosion, and time of pressure decay. Moving the point of ignition away from the open end of the reactor resulted in an increase in peak overpressure and an overall pressure rise of the explosion. Experiments were used to validate a computational fluid dynamics (CFD) combustion model that will be incorporated into a mine-scale explosion model to simulate and predict explosion hazards of large scale methane gas deflagrations in longwall coal mines. INTRODUCTION Coal mining is an integral part to our global society with coal-fired power plants providing about 40% of our global electricity [1]. A common method of extracting coal underground is by longwall mining. Researchers and investigative reports have found that explosive gas zones of methane-air mixtures can form along the longwall face and within the longwall gob, presenting an explosion risk to nearby workers and equipment [2]. In an explosion, the resulting flame and pressure wave presents a fatal traumatic injury hazard and can cause serious damage to equipment. In order to evaluate and mitigate the explosion risks in longwall coal mining, researchers at the Colorado School of Mines are developing a coupled CFD and combustion model of a longwall coal mine. The purpose of the model will be to better predict the explosion hazards under various mine conditions in order to build stronger prevention and mitigation strategies for miners."

Ion exchange techniques have been growing fast and spectacularly in all phases of Science for the last two decades, but still its acceptance as a unit operation in Metallurgy is resisted. Mainly this is because ion exchange procedures are thought of as glamorous techniques by which only relatively expensive metals are to be recovered. Perhaps this concept comes from the early and basic marriage of uranium and other high price metals and ion exchange procedures. The general trend is that ion exchange technique requires equipment and materials which are too expensive to economically perform a chemical step whenever "cheap" commodities are produced. However, we are here presenting a means of utilization of waste hydrochloric acid by an ion exchange technique. We have studied this from the engineering and economic standpoint in a number of variations of the main procedure discussed here and we-conclude that under proper economic circumstances, the cost of the ion exchange material as well as the equipment and labor involved in the ion exchange section, is by no means unreasonable.

Rockfall hazards are ubiquitous in mining environments making their control critical for safe mining operations. The complex processes involved in rockfall events necessitate a probabilistic modeling approach with well-calibrated material properties. The controls designed to mitigate rockfall hazards need to be reliable, efficient, and safe to deploy to meet the constraints present at an active mine. This paper presents an innovative solution to rockfall at Rio Tinto’s Bingham Canyon Mine. The solution incorporates the site-specific calibration and creation of a predictive rockfall model with the design, field testing, implementation, and monitoring of the rockfall controls.

Ring gear and pinions used as the final drive on large metallurgical grinding mills are expected to transmit their rated horsepower reliably for long periods of time. Duty is 24 hrs./ day. Life expectancy of such gear sets is of the order of 20 years; that is, each gear and pinion flank is expected to resist failure by pitting for 10 years. This means that for a dual pinion gear set having a ratio of 18.42:1.0 and a mill speed of 10 RPM, every gear tooth will see 105.12 x 106 surface contact stress cycles and every pinion tooth will see 968.15 x 106 surface contact stress cycles in a 10 year period. The allowable surface contact stress on the gear and pinion is determined by the material hardnesses. The rule being the higher the hardness, the higher the allowable surface contact stress may be.

Leo-potpourri, was selected as the title to this paper for several reasons. First, it is a fascinating word--not looking like it sounds or sounding like it looks. It also allows for a great degree of flexibility in designing a presentation around it. Further, it has become popular to use this eco hyphen something pattern. We hear of eco-mania, eco-hysteria and the like. Lastly, in this era of intense environmental concern, two of the principle elements on which the integrity of our efforts must be equated are ecology and economics. Accordingly, the term "Eco-potpourris" allows me to roam at will through the great number of considerations that make up this environmental issue. Whereas only a few years ago the subject of environment and environmental control had low visibility with the public, today it competes as the focus of attention with the many other popular social issues of our time. The program content here at this meeting, for example, is liberally represented by papers dealing with one or more aspects of environmental concern. If one would look at the 1964 program, in contrast, I would expect that no more than possibly one or two papers covered this subject and even then that those papers dealt principally with the environmental aspect of occupational health. It is gratifying that the program at this meeting demonstrates a serious awareness to a broad spectrum of environmental concerns. It would be a mistake, of course, to believe that this clamor for a quality environment is a "flash in the pan" that will soon subside. "STATE OF THE ART The current situation of ground prediction in TBM is of great concern for tunnelling contractors, and the subject has been quite widely addressed over recent years, for instance by the French Eupalinos 2000 programme, which tested a variety of technological approaches. A number of interesting projects were executed, such as the SOUND and OnSITE projects, part of the German Geotechnologien programme: these projects are focused on seismics, while other techniques such as radar are not considered. Little information and even less industrial applications have been released apart from lab simulations and numerical modelling. A number of field tests in different configurations have been carried out for compression waves, but the results were often not reliable or convincing, and therefore little has been reported in open literature. The advances seem somewhat promising as far as hard rock tunnels are concerned, but ignore the problem raised by concrete lined tunnels such as those bored by a TBM in soft ground. In such tunnels, sending and receiving seismic waves reliably through the lining (and the grouting behind) is quite illusory. A careful analysis of the seismic prediction research results show that the main problem is the source which is poorly controlled and poorly coupled (for instance in concrete lined tunnels, or in approaches that use the TBM cutter head vibrations as a source). Generating waves perpendicular to the tunnel axis is also a problem: aligning with the tunnel axis makes more sense. Radar (Ground Penetrating Radar - GPR) has been used in geotechnical surveys for decades, and also for tunnel inspection. Attempts have been made at using it on a TBM (for example in Japan by Taisei) but mainly using off-the-shelf GPRs, which are not adapted to work in the specific environment of a TBM (because of its huge mass of metal, to start with). Very few results have been published, probably due to the somewhat disappointing performance of such implementations. At present, no TBM has a GPR incorporated in its cutter head that is able to predict ground characteristics while drilling. Another characteristic and drawback of most current methods is that they require dedicated periods of time during which other tunnel construction activities must be stopped. Due to the duration of such operations this leads to performing ground prediction on a weekly basis only, and therefore to a requirement for an investigation range of 100 metres approximately (in order to cover the TBM advance over the coming week). This is not achievable with boreholes made from the TBM, even less if a reasonable accuracy is required, as is usually the case."

The recent expansion of our cities into hilly areas, particularly on the Pacific Coast, has resulted in damage or destruction of many homes due to geological problems such as landslides, soil creep, erosion, subsidence, or groundwater seepage. In southern California, landslides are the principal cause of damage and attention is focused on them. Landslides have occurred due to the reactivation of old slide masses, or have been caused by grading and increased water, infiltration resulting from development.. Reactivation of a portion of the ancient Portuguese Bend landslide in Palos Verdes, Los Angeles County, affected approximately 150 homes. A common type of new failure' occurs when grading has undercut bedding or other essentially planar surfaces so that they dip unsupported out of slope. Other slides have occurred due to the inherent weakness of the material involved. Preventive measures undertaken to eliminate damage in the southern California area have. included areal geologic mapping programs-in-advance of development, enacting or strengthening grading codes, and requiring extensive studies by consulting geologists and soils engineers both during the design stage and during construction. In the design stage, proposed cuts are frequently flattened, lowered or reorientated. Frequently, due to the high cost of land, they are supported by compacted fill buttresses. As a result of these measures, the geologic environment has a major effect on the feasibility, design, and development of, a very substantial percentage of tracts or individual homes.
