Yield pillars have been used for many years to help reduce stresses near mine openings and improve roof and floor stability. A yield pillar is often defined as a pillar that fails but retains residual strength. Stress transfer occurs through the roof and floor after the peak strength of the pillar is reached. High stresses are transferred from around the openings onto abutments that can be barrier pillars or unmined ground. This mechanism, often referred to as pressure arching, is possible as long as the width of yield pillars is less than the critical width above which stresses cannot be carried by the overburden. Significant stress transfer also can occur due to small amounts of pillar and/or floor yielding before the peak strength is reached. This is accomplished in a quasi-elastic manner with little or no visible roof and pillar fracturing or floor heave. Long-term stability may be achieved when stresses and mechanical properties are favorable to pre-failure yielding. This paper gives practical examples where improvements in stability and resource recovery were achieved with this mechanism. Yielding was assessed by comparing measured and calculated vertical pillar stresses. Results indicated that calculated stresses in the pillars were 25 to 40 percent higher than the measured stresses, demonstrating significant arching load transfer to the abutments. Pre-failure yielding is probably often present but unintentional in both development and production areas. Better recognition and use of this mechanism should lead to improved designs as mines become deeper.

Goldex Mine is an underground mine located near the town of Val-d?Or. Multiple innovations were required to work the mine. Due to its low grade, it was important to develop a bulk mining method to economically extract the ore. The method used is a combination between shrinkage stope and long hole stope methods. This modified method is more than adequate; however, all of the ore body must be liberated in a very short period of time. Therefore, to bring down 23 Mt of ore, large blasts up to 1.8 Mt are required. The situation is also complicated by the fact that the mine is located in a residential area. No less that 40 homes are built within a 1 km radius of the mine site. In addition to managing mass blasts, means must also be found to mitigate the vibrations produced by the blast to diminish the disturbance to the neighbourhood. Therefore, the mine used numerous tools to properly plan the blasts and reduce the impacts. A program to control vibrations was one of the first tools put in place. The program?s aim was to draw up an action plan to ensure a follow-up of the homes by inspecting them. The second tool was to develop a methodology to plot a reliable attenuation curve and to adequately determine the maximum charge weight for each blast. Finally, effective communication tools were developed to inform the neighbourhood. There was a huge amount of work to be done in relation to the bench. Reliable and fast loading techniques had to be found to load large blasts in a very short period of time. Adequate logistics had to be developed to send underground more than 20,000 kg of emulsion per day while performing the daily underground operations. Technology had to be developed to adapt the i-kon electronic blasting system to large blasts. Since the control of the charges was the major factor to reduce surface vibrations, it was important to employ loading techniques that would permit decking of the long holes to reduce the charge weight per delays without adversely affecting the loading. All of this work requires an enormous amount of energy but also close collaboration between the different stakeholders (various departments, suppliers and consultants).

Collaboration between education providers is the key to long-term sustainability and improved quality in mining education. The mining industry is now, more than ever, an industry doing business on a global basis. Staff are recruited by global mining companies in many different countries and can find themselves deployed anywhere in the world. The mining engineer of tomorrow must be willing to take on this international challenge, and must be educated to a level where he or she has a comprehensive grounding in technical aspects of mining engineering, but also a well-founded appreciation of management, social, environmental and cultural issues which may be encountered around the world. In order to deliver such an education, academic providers must collaborate at both a national and international level. This paper provides an overview of progress that has been made in Australia through the national joint venture ? Mining Education Australia (MEA). Supported by the mining industry in Australia, through the Minerals Council of Australia (MCA), MEA has now been operational since 2007 and is seeing the development of a range of innovative courses and delivery methods, together with a high level of staff co-operation across the country. MEA has also now commenced some international teaching initiatives which are seen as a catalyst for a far greater degree of international collaboration in the future. Such activity is not only to the benefit of the students who are taught by experts from around the world, but it also ensures that individual university programs remain viable in terms of staffing numbers and financial performance. The paper also presents some statistics on recent upward trends in mining engineering student numbers from around the world, in response to the global shortage of mining engineers.

The study evaluates the hydrological behaviour of exposed and covered waste rock dumps. The objectives were to determine the major factors influencing unsaturated flow in waste rock dumps and covers, and to improve the in-situ, laboratory and numerical modeling characterization methods. Using material properties obtained from in-situ and laboratory tests, waste rock dumps of different configurations, with and without covers, were modeled. It was found that a properly designed “Store, divert and release” (SDR) cover allows most of the water to be diverted downslope and discharged outside of the waste rock dumps. The SDR cover seems to work efficiently even in extreme storm events. The numerical modeling results show that the unsaturated hydraulic properties (e.g. air entry value and water entry value) of the materials largely control the infiltration of water into waste rock dumps.

Cerchar Abrasivity Index (CAI) is one of the commonly used tests to evaluate rock abrasiveness for cutter life/cost estimations of TBM projects. There are at least 3 style machines, 2 different pin hardness, and the test could be run on fresh rock surface VS a sawn surface. Each of these parameters has a meaningful effect on the results, but its impacts were not fully understood nor its implications well explored. This paper reviews the current practice of Cerchar testing and its implications on geotechnical investigations related to TBM tunnels and provide a set of guidelines on testing and reporting of the test results for future projects.

Until 1956, drill and blast was the only way to excavate rock. In that year, a tunneling machine using disc type cutters economically bored a small Toronto tunnel. Its amazing 105 ft/day set a new world record and set the stage for a new industry. The Disc Cutter Role in Excavation Mechanical excavation of hard rock is by now deeply ensconced in the heavy civil construction industry. All over the world, from the Swiss Alp Melange to Hong Kong Granite, to New York Gneiss, huge Tunneling Boring Machines (TBMs) create transportation, water and sewer tunnels. Powerful machines, boasting as much as 6000 hp, bore through rock, excavating in excess of 1400 tons per hour. The tool that makes this tunneling phenomenon possible is the single blade, rolling disc cutter. These hardened steel discs, from 15 1/2 to 19 inches diameter are arranged on a rotating cutterhead, to cut concentric circles in the rock. As the machine is propelled forward under great pressure, rock below each cutter is crushed. But the efficiency of the cutterhead is derived from the science of cutter spacing (distance between cutter paths). The majority of the rock excavated is not crushed, but flakes off in chips and chunks. No pick, tooth, or drag type cutting tool can duplicate the performance of a disc cutter. The economic use of drag type tools is limited to as low as 5,000 psi UCS rock strength in massive formations. In weakly bonded, foliated rock, drag tools do better, but are still limited to rock generally less than 15,000 psi.

An alum/sulfur deposit (USDA organic registered) was mined underground for alunite (K,Na) Al3 (SO4)2 (OH)6 from the early 1900s to the 1930s. It is now being mined as an open pit quarry. A larger assemblage of minerals is included with this method (Alunite, Potassium?Alum, Jarosite, Gypsum, Native Sulfur and K-feldspar). This assemblage of minerals provides the necessary requirements as a Volcanic Soil Conditioner Sulfur-Potash. Heart of Nature? Company has been marketing this product to farmers on the west coast as a (1) pH reducer, (2) soluble sulfur and potassium source for plant growth and (3) soluble calcium. Recently, a new market has been tapped. This product has been found to solve many odor, bacteria and algae problems faced in the dairy industry.

Because of the lack of a universally accepted definition or standard for RCA, we are left to our own conventions in the marketplace as to what is most ?effective? or a ?Best Practice? for our own facilities or organization. This lack of uniformity in the application of RCA produces an equal lack of uniformity in the measureable outcomes of RCA on the bottom-line from site to site and industry to industry. What is the definition of success for an RCA? Is it regulatory compliance? Is it some quantifiable measure of bottom-line performance? Is compliance and bottom-line performance the same thing? Can we measure the ROI we receive by doing compliant RCA? These questions must be adequately addressed if any definition of RCA is to be effective on the bottom-line. Like our various Corporate Vision and Mission Statements, what would be our Vision and Mission for RCA? When pondering the answer to this question, we should consider: ? What Key Performance Indicators will the Success of RCA be Linked to? This provides a direct correlation to the corporate dashboard and therefore garners support for the RCA effort when implemented at the sharp end. Not until we know what KPI?s will effectively measure our maintenance and reliability objectives can we begin to establish which opportunities will afford the greatest returns1. ? What Bottom-Line Metrics will be Tracked to Measure the Effectiveness of Our RCA Effort? Will it be increased production, profitability, regulatory compliance, etc.? Will it be decreased injuries/fatalities, claims, customer complaints, risks, etc.? We should be specific about these metrics and their correlation to the metrics on our corporate dashboard. ? What Will Trigger an RCA Investigation? Normally companies will establish quantifiable thresholds to be surpassed before an RCA will be conducted. Examples may be an OSHA recordable injury, a failure event in which production losses exceed $250,000, an equipment failure in excess of $50,000 or a regulatory violation. This is the norm. However, we should realize this is using our RCA skills totally on a reactive basis. High Reliability Organizations (HRO) strive for proaction and they also use RCA proactively. Why can?t we use RCA to analyze why unacceptable risks from an FMEA are so high? It is perfectly applicable yet rarely implemented in this fashion.

INTRODUCTION Mica Dam is located on the Columbia River just downstream of the "big bend" of the Columbia, where it leaves the Rocky Mountain Trench and begins to flow southwards, approximately 85 miles north of Revelstoke, B.C. (Fig.l). The dam was built as one of three Columbia River Treaty dams in British Columbia which regulate the flow of the river and provide flood control downstream in Washington and Oregon. In addition, the three Canadian dams make possible greatly increased power generation at existing power plants in the United States and further development along the Columbia and its tributaries in British Columbia. History Mica Dam, constructed during the period 1967 to 1973, is a zoned earthfill embankment 650 feet high, which has 12,000,000 acre feet of live storage and an available head of 550 feet. Power intakes which would serve either a six-unit surface or underground plant were incorporated into the design and construction of the right abutment of the dam (Fig. 2). Prior to 1971 alternative 2500 MW capacity surface and underground powerplant arrangements were studied. Cost estimates for the two alternatives were the same within the limits of estimating procedures. However, it was believed there was a certain continuing risk in locating a surface plant at the toe of a steep canyon wall. A series of flotation experiments were carried out in a 2.25-dm3 laboratory-scale Rushton turbine cell using hydrophobic quartz particles. Flotation was performed at a constant mean bubble diameter over a range of superficial gas velocities and impeller rotational speeds. The overall flotation rate constant increased linearly with increasing superficial gas velocity (and hence bubble surface area flux). The rate constant also increased linearly with increasing energy dissipation, until a maximum value was reached. A further increase in energy dissipation had little effect on the rate constant. The dependency of the rate constant on energy dissipation is a reflection of the size range and hydrophobicity of the particles used in this study. The flotation rate constant increased with increasing particle size, except at the highest energy dissipation value examined, for which the flotation rate of the larger particles reached a plateau and, in some cases, decreased. Good agreement was obtained between the experimental results and those predicted by a fundamental flotation model using experimentally measured values for mean energy dissipation and the Sauter mean bubble diameter. The bubble velocity was adjusted to obtain the best fit to the experimental data. The inferred bubble velocity, based on the flotation model, was found to increase with increasing superficial gas velocity (and bubble surface area flux) and was found to decrease with increasing impeller rotational speed. While the inferred bubble velocities were significantly lower than experimentally measured bubble velocities, and, except at low superficial gas velocity values, significantly higher than the bubble swarm velocity calculated from gas holdup measurements, similar trends with impeller rotational speed and superficial gas velocity were observed in all cases.

Over a period of seven years (1989-1996) the Mineral Industry Research Laboratory (MIRL) University of Alaska Fairbanks, has investigated the effects of temperature, residence time, and particle size on the degree of low-rank coal (LRC) upgrading for a non-evaporative, hydrothermal drying process, also known as hot water drying (HWD). Three Alaskan LRCs were used in this study: Usibelli coal (Seam No. 4) from the Nenana Coal Field, Little Tonzona coal from near McGrath, and Beluga coal from the Beluga-Yentna field on the west side of Cook Inlet. Replicated, factorial tests were conducted. Experimental results indicate that most of the low-rank coal upgrading via HWD occurs rapidly within the first 10-20 minutes of residence time. Thereafter, the upgrading process slows down and over 100 minutes of additional residence time are required to produce similar percentage increases in coal properties to those achieved in the first 10- 20 minutes. The properties of the hot water dried products were very sensitive to process temperature. Calorific value, carbon and oxygen contents, equilibrium moisture levels and Hardgrove gindabilities all appear to change linearly with temperature within the 275°C to 325°C range.

India is targeting to boost its electrical capacity from 100 GW to 200 GW within the next 10 years. The National Hydroelectric Power Corporation (NHPC) has decided in2001 to take execution of the 800 MW Stage-II of the prestigious 2,051 MW Parbatihydrol electric project in Kulu district of the northern province Himachal Pradesh. Two parallel 30° inclined underground pressure shafts of 1.542m in length each will be excavated in different geological formations and lined with hexagonal concrete segments by a hard rock double shield TBM. That kind of heading will be a novelty to India and an innovative method for inclined pressure shafts. The 4.88m Mitsubishi DSTBM will be assembled underground on a swivelling steel platform especially designed for the launching as well as for the acceptance of the TBM in the upper cavern of each shaft. The hexagonal segmental lining system causes a significant higher job safety than an open TBM with conventional support. Each ring consists of four honeycomb segments with 20 cm thickness. After finalisation of the excavation a steel liner will be installed and concreted. The Joint Venture Jäger-Seli will perform the two pressure shafts as a sub-contractor for the Indian company Gammon India Ltd.

Engineers and Owners share a common desire to build reliable, efficient plants on schedule at reasonable costs. This paper describes one tool that Bechtel finds can integrate these objectives by “putting innovation into practice”. Examples of such innovative engineering practice include the use of computational fluid dynamics (CFD) to determine efficient designs. This paper outlines several examples of CFD applications on actual Mining and Metals Projects from around the world. The focus here is to highlight the modeling objectives, analysis strategy, actual benefit obtained from the work, lessons learned to improve future efforts and the common mistakes that can obscure the correct or best results, despite impressive graphics. The tools are powerful, and the results are more powerful when applied with skilled and well-directed human effort and ingenuity.

A new generated NaNO3 ? NaNO2 ? KNO3 ternary thermal energy storage system which has low melting point as 124°C and high specific heat capacity was studied for the short and long?term thermal stability by using the Thermogravimetric Analyzer (TGA). Based on the actual working condition of molten salt in solar two, the simulated cyclic thermal stability measurement was also conducted. The ternary system demonstrates excellent short ? term thermal stability and thermal reliability after cyclic heating and cooling processes. However, in the long ? term as well as the simulated cyclic stability measurement, large amount of weight loss was observed. Moreover, the stepwise long ? term isothermal study reveals that below 440°C the weight change is minimal and this temperature is viewed as the upper limit temperature of thermal stability for this ternary system. To determine the lost phases at high temperature above the upper thermal stability limit, techniques such as XRD and SEM are used to compare the condition of the salt mixture before and after the long ? term thermal stability study. On the basis of the comparison, it can be concluded that the major weight loss was due to the decomposition of sodium nitrite.

Introduction The US Office of Surface Mining (OSM) is proposing changes to the Code of Federal Regulations in the interest of minimizing the adverse effects of excess-spoil-fill construction on the “prevailing hydrologic balance, fish, wildlife and other environmental values” (70 FR 35112). The proposed changes will require: (1) minimization the amount of excess spoil generated at a mine site; (2) minimization of the size of the fills constructed; (3) consideration of alternative configurations for disposal; and (4) development of a disposal plan that would minimize adverse impacts to the environment.1 To achieve those objectives, mining companies operating in steep-sloped Appalachia will likely build excess spoil fills (also called valley fills) that toe out at higher elevations in the hollows (i.e. to prevent or limit burial of streams). Consequently, the slopes of fill foundations will generally be steeper. Whereas the authors of this paper support these measures to protect the hydrologic balance and general environment, we wish to point out that placement of fills on steeper foundations can negatively impact the stability of the fills if proper care is not taken during their construction. It is important to note that in addition to impairing human safety, valley fill instability can negatively impact streams, the riparian habitat etc., and thus defeat the very purpose of the spoil minimization measures proposed. We do not, however, propose additional regulatory requirements pertaining to valley fill stability. Rather, we intend to emphasize the importance of engineering requirements already on the books, especially as they apply to the predominant type of valley fill constructed: the durable rock fill. We believe that the practice of restricting valley fills, to higher elevations in the watershed leaves less room for error in the design and construction of stable structures. This paper gives a quick review of the nature of excess spoil generation; methods and requirements of excess spoil fill construction, and the to-date stability record of the fills. The interest in excess spoil minimization and how it affects valley fill construction is also discussed. Most importantly, we will review long-standing issues pertaining to proper design and construction measures with respect to durable rock fills and discuss how they will become more critical as spoil minimization is practiced.

Libby, Montana is the site of a large vermiculite deposit that was mined between 1920 and 1990 to extract vermiculite for commercial applications such as insulation, gardening products, and construction materials. The Libby vermiculite deposit also contains amphibole minerals including tremolite, actinolite, richterite, and winchite. Historically, Libby mine workers experienced high exposures to amphibole structures, and, as a group, have experienced the health consequences of those occupational exposures. It has been suggested that Libby residents also have been and continue to be exposed to amphibole structures released during the vermiculite mining operations and therefore are at increased risk for disease. The Agency for Toxic Substance and Disease Registry (ATSDR) conducted two epidemiological-type studies of residents living in Libby and the surrounding areas to assess these risks. The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) collected and analyzed exposure data in Libby and used those data to project risks of asbestos-associated disease for Libby residents. The EPA has placed the Libby Asbestos Site, which includes the mine and the town of Libby, on its National Priority List of hazardous waste sites in need of clean up. This article presents a review of the exposure studies conducted in Libby and an analysis of health risks based on the data collected in those studies. Libby mine workers have experienced elevated levels of asbestos-associated disease as a consequence of their occupational exposures to amphibole structures. Libby residents? exposures typically are substantially lower than mine workers? historical exposures, and the health risk projections for residents are, accordingly, substantially lower. © 2007 Published by Elsevier Inc. Research has shown that excessive soil compaction is detrimental to the establishment of trees in reclaimed soils. Dry bulk density and penetration resistance are two soil parameters that can be used to indicate the level of compaction in reclaimed soils. It is believed that reclamation practices which minimize soil compaction will produce better results when forestland is the intended post-mining use. The University of Kentucky has developed reforestation test cells on reclaimed soils at a surface mine in eastern Kentucky to test this hypothesis. Each test cell has been planted with various species of trees, and since 1997, data have been collected at these test cells for soil average dry bulk density, average penetration resistance, average depth to refusal, and average survival rate of trees. These data have been correlated to determine the relationship between soil compaction and tree survival rate. It is believed that the two soil compaction parameters may ultimately be used to predict tree survival rates on reclaimed surface mined lands.

Introduction Basis For System San Juan Coal Company (SJCC) is a subsidiary of BHP Billiton. Until recently, BHP Billiton operated three surface mines in northwestern New Mexico: Navajo, San Juan, and La Plata. The San Juan and La Plata Mines supplied the San Juan Generating Station operated by Public Service of New Mexico. Stripping ratios at those operations were increasing, and by 2000 a feasibility study was underway to develop SJCC’s vast underground reserves as a replacement. Early in the evaluation and planning phase for the San Juan Underground Mine, it was determined that the target seams (Fruitland #8 and #9) had a high propensity for spontaneous combustion. Spontaneous combustion was identified as a risk, both to personnel and equipment, and to the ability of SJCC to reliably fulfill its obligation to the power plant. In the last 20 years, several western US coal mines suffered underground spontaneous combustion events and/or mine fires. Included in this group were Colorado Westmoreland’s Orchard Valley Mine (1987), RAG’s Willow Creek Mine (1998 and 2000), Oxbow’s Sanborn Creek Mine (1999), the West Elk Mine of Arch Coal (2000), Arch’s Skyline Mine (2002), Western Fuels’ Deserado Mine (1996), and the West Ridge Mine of Andalex Resources (2003). The cause for the majority of these fires was spontaneous combustion. Fighting the fires required injection of an inert gas or foam. Nitrogen and carbon dioxide were the predominant choices of inert gas. In all cases, the gasses had to be trucked in from considerable distances. Before the inert gas could be used, injection holes had to be drilled into or near the suspected fire locations. This drilling and trucking caused costly delays in the timing of the fire fighting effort, and was not as precise as desirable. Emergency purchasing of gas and pumping services was extremely expensive, running as high as $70,000 per day at one mine. As a result of the experience of other western US coal operators, and the risk inherent with spontaneous combustion at SJCC, it was decided to pursue installation of a nitrogen delivery facility on-site at SJCC. This decision was later expanded to include a continuous supply of nitrogen.

In 1980, some US cars were designed and built to metric dimensions; wine and gas were sold by the liter; and the March of Dimes Walkathon was measured in kilometers. Although the US Congress has taken a ''soft" approach to metrication, and public resistance to the idea remains strong, the use of metric units is becoming more and more widespread. As the minerals industry becomes more international in scope, US mining companies are converting to the metric system-particularly those companies with business interests overseas.

Evidence of hydrothermal activity on two Mid-Atlantic Ridge oceanic core complexes (OCCs), at 13º30’N (the Semyenov 1 through 5 fields) and 13º20’N (the Irinovskoe field) (Fig. 1) were studied using CTD casts, dredges, TV-grabs and SP surveys during previous research cruises to these sites (Cherkashev et al., 2013, McLeod et al., 2009). In late 2013, the Semyenov and Irinovskoe fields were revisited, this time with an autonomous underwater vehicle (AUV) and a remotely-operated vehicle (ROV) during the ODEMAR (Oceanic Detachments at the Mid-Atlantic Ridge) cruise on the French research vessel "Pourqoui Pas ?". Here we present the first visual surveys and direct sampling of these vent sites. High-resolution (~2 m) bathymetry of the 13º30’N and 13º20’N OCCs and their associated vent fields was collected during 4 and 5 AUV dives, respectively, using the GEOMAR AUV "ABYSS" (Fig. 1). These surveys were flown between 70 m and 100 m above the seafloor, typically at a constant height to reduce vehicle movement. The AUV was equipped with Eh, turbidity, and temperature sensors in order to detect active hydrothermal venting. Over twenty ROV dives with the ROV "VICTOR 6000" allowed for the visual exploration of the OCCs and collection of 59 hydrothermal rock samples from the vent fields. As a result of these exploration activities, the first robust estimates of the size of the deposits, and the geologic controls on sulfide accumulation at these sites can be determined.
