Precedence constraints are broadly used in mathematical models and algorithms for mine planning to model, for example, slope angles in open pit operations or connectivity in underground mines. Unfortunately, these constraints do not capture relevant geometrical aspects for the design of the mine like minimum bottom space of pits or smoothness of the economic envelope in block caves. In this work, we present different approaches that utilize precedence constraints generating economic envelops that are more suitable for design purposes. The numerical experiences show that the proposed techniques produce high value envelops with better geometrical properties and that the methods proposed can be computed efficiently.

Methane Rating has been developed from a need, in South Africa, for quick and simple measurement of coal face methane characteristics. It employs proven existing direct measurement methods, adapted specifically for rapidly advancing coal face conditions, to deal with the short term high release rates encountered during continuous miner coal cutting. The Rating is a comparative value, relative to the normal or average conditions encountered within a maintained data base. The seam gas content and the initial emission rate are plotted against each other on a graph, where they are compared with the average conditions to obtain the rating. The higher the seam gas content, and the higher the initial methane release rate, then the higher the Methane Rating, on a scale of 1 to 4. Methane being released from a newly mined coal sample is measured once underground, from a sealed gas-tight canister. The sample is returned, still sealed, to surface and milled to rapidly release the remaining methane. It is later intended that the milling process is also completed underground. Applications include the identification of changing methane conditions, outburst prone conditions, methane emission against advance, and mining in devolatilised coal.

Tests were conducted to investigate the potential for recovering anthracite from preparation plant tailings. Samples were collected from tailings streams or slurry ponds of several anthracite cleaning plants. A washability analysis was conducted on each sample. The use of gravity-and surface-based cleaning processes for treating the 28x200 mesh tailings material was examined. Simulations were performed for various cyclone staging arrangements using published partition data for both water-only and dense-medium cyclones. Froth flotation testing was done on both precleaned anthracite and tailings material. Grade-yield curves were determined for various conditions.

A reaction is evaluated by which heated and pressurized water is used to precipitate metal oxides from loaded Kelex 100 complexes. Pure copper oxide (CuO) and pure nickel (Nio) in powder form, and ranging in average size from 12 to 25 micrometers, were found to precipitate from copper and nickel loaded Kelex 100/kerosene complexes, by water heated and pressurized to between 374 and 400 °c and 2170 psig (148 atm) and 3500 psig (238 atm). The precipitation is suggested to result from hydrolysis of the metal, following exchange for the hydrogen in the phenolic hydroxyl of the Kelex 100 structure, enhanced by the conditions provided by heated and pressurized water. The reaction is believed to have the characteristics of homogeneous nucleation and heterogeneous growth. The effects of temperature, pressure, initial metal concentration and seed addition on the kinetics of the process were studied. In addition, characterization studies were performed on the reaction products. A detailed discussion of the experimental results is presented.

Almost all modern cutting bits use a cemented tungsten carbide tip to provide adequate hit life against wear. Laboratory tests by the US Bureau of Mines have indicated that the number of strikes for ignition increased by a factor of three with a new non-rotating bit impacting a sandstone block when the clearance angle was increased by 10°, and that carbide-tipped bits allowed more strikes before ignition than steel-tipped bits by a factor of 7 to 10. Recent field tests in an operating coal mine indicate a dramatic reduction in the frequency of frictional ignitions and improvement in hit life by using a mushroom-shaped hit cap and a larger initial clearance angle. The latter was achieved by increasing the hit attack angle. Improved hit performance through selection of the grade of tungsten-carbide is a com¬promise between fracture resistance and wear resistance. A large clearance angle should he maintained by various techniques, such as a variable attack angle holder, or a reusable hit that can he reground.

Yield pillar-based gate road designs oftentimes fail to provide mine operators with adequate ground control because of the unknowing misemployment of "critically" sized pillars. A "critical" pillar is one that is too large to either yield nonviolently or yield before the roof and floor sustain permanent damage, but is too small to support full abutment loads. To demonstrate the critical pillar concept, a field study of a tapering gate road was conducted by the U.S. Bureau of Mines at the Sunnyside Coal Mines, Sunnyside, UT. Extreme pillar stresses and associated coal bumps characterize the response to first panel mining of a 16.8-m wide critical design. Significantly lower pillar stresses, early yielding of the pillar and adjacent panel rib, and an absence of coal bumps suggest that a narrower 12.2-m-wide design more closely approaches proper yield pillar dimensions. Probehole drilling of several 1 O.6-m-wide pillars revealed low stress levels and substantial pillar and panel rib yielding prior to abutment onset, indicating a properly functioning yield pillar design.

During the major expansion of the Inspiration smelter, which took place in 1973, the bulk material handling system underwent a matching expansion in order to move the required materials. Inspiration is the first smelter worldwide to employ electric smelting in conjunction with the use of Hoboken converters (1), (2). The installation includes a 51 -MVA electric furnace, five 4.25m (14-foot) diameter Hoboken converters, rotary dryer, bedding plant, acid plant, heat recovery steam plant, and gas and dust handling system. See Figure 1, Plot Plan. As of today, the 51-MVA electric furnace is the world's largest in the smelting of copper. Engineering design for the installation was per- formed by Treadwell Corporation of New York. The task of designing the conveyor system was complex because the system had to be installed while the smelter was operating and with minimum plant shutdowns, and it had to serve both the existing and the new smelter. Existing conveyors were redesigned where necessary and incorporated into the new conveyor system. See Figure 2, Flow Sheet. The system encompasses the handling of such diverse materials as wet and dry copper concentrates, cement copper, silica flux, cold dope, and concentrate and flue dust.

Nearly 17 years ago a major producer of synthetic zeolites started an extensive exploration program for natural zeolite deposits which resulted in the discovery of over 170 occurrences in the western United States. A few years later several of the other producers and consumers of synthetic zeolites also started similar exploration programs. Since then, small quantities of natural zeolite minerals have been produced from at least 12 deposits in the United States. Of these the Bowie deposit, about 13 miles north of Bowie, Arizona, is the most important,having produced over 5,000 tons of vitric tuff zeolitically altered to the mineral chabazite and minor amounts of the minerals erionite and clinoptilolite. Mining Districts and Mineral Deposits of Arizona compiled by Charles A. Mardirosian, Consulting Geologist, estimates the value of the total production from the Bowie deposit at a very conservative $2,000,000. Unfortunately, none of the companies responsible for the discovery and the initial production of natural zeolites made any effort to develop the high volume, low cost applications of this unique mineral raw material. Instead, they developed only the high unit value uses to supplement their existing synthetic molecular sieve product lines. With the producers of synthetic zeolites thinking in pounds and not in tons, further development of natural zeolite deposits stagnated for over a decade.

The hydrology of in situ leach mining operations is being studied by the U.S. Bureau of Mines using a variety of techniques, and the Bureau has made significant advances in tracking and modeling the flow of leach solutions in rock formations. However, the influence that leach solution composition has on the hydrology of these systems is poorly understood, and geochemically-controlled changes in the hydrologic characteristic of ore deposits during in situ leach mining of porphyry-hosted, copper oxide ores have not been previously studied. The Cyprus Casa Grande in situ leach mining operation mines fracture-hosted and disseminated copper oxides (predominantly chrysocolla) hosted by granodiorite porphyry using a pattern of underground wells. The injection solution consists of sulfuric acid raffinate from a solvent extraction-electrowinning plant. Chemical analysis of representative injection and recovery solutions reveals that gangue cation concentrations in these solutions are high, and geochemical modeling shows that the solutions are saturated or nearly saturated with respect to gypsum, jarosite, and various amorphous oxides. Precipitation of these solids is evoked by calcium-exchange reactions, rising pH, and perhaps locally rising redox potential, as the leach solution reacts with the ore minerals, host rocks, and the atmosphere. Mass and volume balance calculations show that approximately 25 cm of precipitates are formed per gram of copper recovered at Cyprus Casa Grande. The results of geochemical modeling agree with petrologic examination of pre-and post-leach core samples from the leached horizon. Moreover, hydrochemical modeling and hydrologic field data suggests that chemical precipitation causes significant decreases in porosity and permeability during in situ leach mining of porphyry-hosted, copper oxide ore.

The use of resin-grouted cable supports to control large ground movements in several types of underground mines has increased substantially since being introduced in 1991. Cables offer several advantages over traditional support systems, having large support capacities coupled with the flexibility to be used in low openings. Cable slings have been designed to be installed on-cycle using no-spin technology or a two-piece unit that can be placed with hand-held drilling equipment. Additionally, yielding cable supports have been developed and are being used to control large amounts of movement in coal and evaporite deposits.

The E h potential during of a iron reducing bacteria such as Aquaspirillum Magnetotacticum (A.M.) can be predicted by a growth model. It also reflects the adsorption of Fe+2 Cu+2 and Mn +2 ions, that can be incorporated into magnetic material called magnetosomes. The Ferric ion concentration during controlled growth of Thiobacillus Ferrooxidans (T.F.) is a function of the bacteria population curve, while A. M. ferrous ion concentration is a function of the integral of the population curve. Charting of the redox potential of T.F. during batch oxidation of refractory ores such as pyrite and pyrrhotite can be helpful to establishing onset and rate the bulk bio-oxidation rate. The onset of biooxidation is marked by an increase in Fe +3 ions that can be correlated with increased growth due to adsorbed electrons.

Activated carbon loaded with gold from different halide solutions has been characterized by thermal analysis techniques. The mechanism of gold uptake by carbon varies from predominately adsorption for gold iodide to predominately reduction for gold chloride. TGA and DT A measurements confirm the existence of adsorbed gold-halide species within the micropore structure of carbon. These results suggest that the ration of reduced; adsorbed gold increases for gold halides in the order Au-I > Au-Br > Au-Cl. In the case of Au-I, TA results for the loaded carbon were compared with pure compounds of 12, AuI and AuI3.

The Bureau of Mines conducts studies of the economic impacts of regulations on federal lands. These studies are part of the Bureau Potential Supply Analysis (PSA) program. To meet the needs of these studies, a methodology was developed to estimate operating and capital costs for a mineral deposit given its tonnage, grade, and depth. The format for the cost models in this study was developed at the Bureau's Western Field Operations Center (WFOC), Spokane, W. A., for studies of known and undiscovered resources on Federal lands. These cost models are described in a Bureau publication by Camm (1991).

The world's largest grinding mill operates at the Cadia Hill Mine in Australia. Svedala Industries supplied the 12.2-m- (40-ft-) diam, 20-MW Cadia gearless, semiautogenous grinding mill (SAG). This was a leap of more than 40% above the largest operating SAG mill. This article reviews the significant items involved in the development, design, manufacture, installation and operation of this mill. Description of the Cadia project The Cadia Hill Mine is located 25 km (15 miles) southwest of Orange, in the Central Tablelands of New South Wales, Australia. The mining lease covers about 3,100 hm2 (7,660 acres) of the Cadia Valley. The Cadia deposit is a large, homogeneous, low-grade, porphyry-type, gold-copper resource. Current reserves stand at 202 Mt (222 million st), grading 0.73 g/t (0.02 oz/st) gold and 0.17% copper. They contain 146.2 t (4.7 million oz) of gold and 347 Kt (382,500 st) of copper. The operation consists of openpit mining and ore processing to produce gold bullion and a gold/copper concentrate. The operation processes 17 Mt/a (19 millon stpy) of ore to produce 91 kt/a (100,300 stpy) of concentrate and 9.1 t/a (293,000 oz/year) of gold. The plant operates two 12-hour shifts a day and had a targeted availability of 94%. The plant facilities include a copper concentrator, o water supply system, an openpit mine, tailings pipeline and dam, and a concentrate pipeline and dewatering facility located in Blayney, about 35 km (22 miles) from the concentrator. Significant features of the process plant include o primary crusher and stockpile, a reclaim conveyor system feeding, the Cadia SAG mill (Figs. 1 and 2) and two 6.7-m- (22-ft-) diam ball mills (Fig. 3). A portion of the gold is extracted in a gravity circuit. The balance is extracted with the copper in the flotation section of the plant. Concentrate is thickened and piped about 35 km (22 miles) to the filter plant and rail loadout facility located in Blayney. Tailings are pumped to a tailings dam and process water is reclaimed from the tailings dam. The water system is designed to control and capture available runoff from local creeks, and to store these waters in dams and weirs. In addition, a major portion of the water for the process plant is treated effluent from the city of Orange and a smaller portion from Blayney Mill selection. The low-grade ore posed a dilemma for Cadia. To achieve a satisfactory economic operation, large-scale processing was required. The selection of the mills, equal to the largest designed and operated at the time, gave a plant configuration consisting of two 11.1- x 5.8-m (36- x 19-ft) SAG mills and three 6.1- x 9.1-m (20 x 30-ft) ball mills. This configuration did not provide the most satisfactory economic model for the project. A review of the single line configuration indicated that a significant reduction in the overall capital cost of the plant could be achieved by increasing the size of the mills and reducing the quantity. We present an algorithm to integrate the uncertainties of mean activity rate and magnitude cumulative distribution function in the interval estimation of the primary seismic hazard parameters: the exceedance probability and the mean return period. The algorithm is applicable for both the parametric and nonparametric modeling of magnitude distribution. When the Gutenberg-Richter relation-based parametric model of magnitude distribution is used, the interval estimation of its parameters is based on the asymptotic normality of the maximum likelihood estimators. When the nonparametric kernel estimation of magnitude distribution is used, we apply the iterated bias-corrected and accelerated method for the interval estimation, based on the smoothed bootstrap and second-order bootstrap samples. Previous studies indicated that the uncertainty of mean activity rate significantly affects the interval estimates of hazard functions only when the activity rate is low and the inference period is not long (Orlecka-Sikora & Lasocki 2017). With increasing mean activity rate, the uncertainty of magnitude distribution dominates over the uncertainty of mean activity rate in the aggregated uncertainty of the hazard functions. The provided algorithm is generic and can be applied to capture the uncertainty of any multiparameter function from the uncertainties of its parameters. Here we present a further development of the algorithm developed by Orlecka-Sikora & Lasocki (2017) by presenting its implementation in the Traffic Light System approach. As an example of use, we present the confidence intervals estimation of hazard parameters for the datasets related to induced seismicity accompanying underground exploitation of copper ore in the Legnica-Głogów Copper District (LGCD) in Poland. The algorithm is under implementation to the EPISODES platform (https://tcs.ah-epos.eu/) - an IT platform that provides access to integrated research infrastructures of the Thematic Core Service of Anthropogenic Hazards (TCS AH) of EPOS (European Plate Observing System). The algorithm is also a component of the pilot developed within the EPOS SP project (No 871121), which aims to strengthen the interaction with the private sector and the added value for society. The pilot demonstrates the potential of the IS-EPOS platform software applications for the technology-related probabilistic assessment of time-dependent seismic hazard. The pilot supports a Traffic Light System approach. The current seismic hazard is compared to threshold values based on the exceedance probability for a given magnitude.

The concurrent observation of the phenomena of alkali-aggregate reaction and development of efficient dust collection systems on rotary kilns made mandatory the process modifications to produce low alkali cements. Such low alkali cements as were available prior to these recent changes were either the rare result of low alkali raw materials, the loss of alkalies with dust loss from the kiln stack, or in some instances by the use of CaC12 in the kiln feed to increase volitalization of the alkalies and their subsequent loss or discard with the normal dust emission from the kiln. The relative slowly soluble nature of natural occurring alkali minerals in cement raw materials as compared to the very soluble nature of the alkali salts as present in cement kiln reaction products, either in clinker or in dust emission led to the development of the water leaching system. Two distinctly different problems of leaching are created by the two major systems of portland cement production, the wet and dry processes. The wet process is characterized by moderate dust loads and concentration of soluble forms of alkali in the dust. Further the return of the leached dust slurry does not materially change the characteristics of kiln feed on reintroduction and subsequently does not materially influence kiln operation. The dry process differs in high levels of dust emission and the presence in the collected dust of large amounts of unreacted kiln feed with its sparingly soluble alkali minerals. In the dry process reintroduction of leached dust slurry changes the dry process to what may be classed as a damp process. This change results in some decrease in kiln capacity and creates conditions of operation which are uncommon to either the wet or dry process.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines, Kennecott Copper Corp., and New Mexico Institute of Mining and Technology are cooperating on a research project to improve extraction of copper from previously leached waste dumps that are in part compacted and impervious to leach solutions. The field work is being done at the "J" leach dump, Chino Mines Division, Kennecott Copper Corp., Santa Rita, N. Mex. The laboratory percolation leaching tests were made at the U.S. Bureau of Mines Salt Lake City Metallurgy Research Center on drill core samples from the "J" dump to determine how much copper might be leached if permeability could be restored by explosive heaving or other means. The core samples from nine drill holes on "J" dump contained from 0.06 to 0.14 percent copper. Copper extractions ranging from 15 to 3 percent were obtained in 75 days by percolation leaching of minus-1-inch material with dilute sulfuric acid. The tests results indicate that about 2'7 percent of the copper remaining in the "J" dump could be extracted under ideal leaching conditions.

The quantity of coal recovered by diamond coring techniques is not sufficient in many instances to make meaningful coking and/or ash fouling tests. Quantities in excess of that obtained by conventional coring techniques, usually in amounts exceeding 500 pounds, has been designated bulk sampling. During the past three years, AMAX Coal Company has utilized five methods of bulk sampling. It was our desire to obtain a bulk sample that was diagnostic of the seam by the most expedient and economical method. From the beginning all of our efforts have been directed to methods which would extract the required coal from slim boreholes which provide quick and inexpensive access to the coal seam, regardless of depth, terrain and accessability. In our efforts and investigation several large diameter cores have been taken from thick coal seams at relatively shallow depths in easily drilled rocks. On the other hand, for deeper thin seams multiple large diameter coring is more expensive and time consuming. It is somewhat less expensive when multiple cores are taken from a single slim borehole utilizing deflection coring, although considerable skill is necessary.

To evaluate the effects on groundwater of a proposed in-pit disposal operation at an east Texas lignite mine, the local geologic, hydrogeologic, and geochemical features were thoroughly characterized. Resultant data were used in a flow and transport model (SWIFT) to simulate migration of the ash leachate. Computer simulations indicate that the leachate plume will travel 61-152 meters from the disposal area in 100 years after resaturation of the spoils. A 61-meter buffer zone of mine spoils without ash will surround the disposal area. The proposed landfill operation received regulatory approval and is currently operating as a Class 2 non-hazardous landfill.

I. Introduction The experimental work described in this paper was carried out during 1967 and 1968 in an inclined reinforced concrete adit which had been driven during 1965 and 1966 to provide primary access for a new gypsum mine. The new mine was situated near the village of Sherburn-in-Elmet in central Yorkshire in an area of extensive post-glacial plains of deltaic and lacustrine origin. These plains cover a large area of this part of Yorkshire extending inland from the coast for a distance of about 35 miles. The gypsum deposit at Sherburn dates from Permian times and it is considered" to have been associated with the western-most edges of the ancient Zechstein Sea which was also responsible for the formation of the extensive evaporite deposits in north-east Yorkshire. The gypsum deposit, which varies in thickness from 10 to 15 feet, is extremely pure and it occurs quite close to the surface; in the Sherburn area the overburden is only 120 feet thick. The proximity of the deposit to the surface, however, tends to give a somewhat false idea of the magnitude of the problems associated with its extraction. These problems were all related to the nature of the overlying strata. As has already been mentioned, the surface deposits are post-glacial and they consist of an extremely large number of thin layers of varved clays, fine silts and sands extending down to a depth of 75 feet. From the bottom of the post-glacial deposits to the seam, a distance of about 45 feet, the strata consists of a succession of marls, weak sandstones, and siltstones, which although they are inherently incompetent materials, are appreciably stronger
