Introduction The mining industry has been using computers since the late 1950s. Despite this early start, the use of mine planning software is not a common practice in many operations. But the trend might be changing because of the availability of relatively inexpensive personal computers (PC). The introduction of these machines has generated unprecedented interest by mine managers to computerize their planning operations. However, some managers have become disappointed with the PC's lack of adequate software and the inability to handle the massive amounts of information required for modeling. This paper is an attempt to shed some light on the future of computers in the mining industry. It will examine: • historical progress in the computer industry, • future advances in the computer industry, • historical usage of computers in mining, and • future alternatives available to mining. Historical Progress The computer industry has come a long way since the first full-fledged electronic digital computer Electronic Numerical Integrator And Calculator (ENIAC) was built in 1946. This machine weighed more than 27 t (30 st). It contained 19,000 vacuum tubes, occupied 139 m2 (1500 sq ft), and could perform 5000 additions per second. By contrast, today's fastest, commercially available computer is the CRAY-X. It weighs less than 5 t (6 st), has no vacuum tubes, occupies less than 9 m2 (100 sq ft), and performs over 100 million operations per second. This is an incredible advancement in less than 40 years. One person commented on the rate of advancement in the computer industry. He suggested that if the auto industry had advanced at the same rate as the electronics industry, we could buy a Rolls Royce for $2.75 and it would run

INTRODUCTION The Premise Not much time has to be spent in a tunneling project to realize the tremendous interdependence that exists among the various unit operations. The research that is to be described attempts to examine one set of these linked operations, namely, the effect of cutters on muck handling properties. All too often research focuses on too minute an aspect of a problem for the results to be of much immediate, practical use. The goal of this research is to avoid this specificity. Apologies are tendered if this goal is missed. It is known that the mode of flow of bulk solids under the influence of gravity -- emptying a bin or hopper -- is dependent on several basic parameters. The size of the particles and the distribution of sizes (consist) determine whether the solids will first flow out of a given aperture; the cohesion of the solids will determine if flow will continue after the bin is opened; and the angle of internal friction determines the size of the flow regime (1,2,3). It is well understood that the latter two parameters affect the behavior of bulk material on a conveyor belt. Cohesion of material to a belt is always an undesired problem. Heaping of material on a belt depends on the material's internal friction. It is also known that varying the particle size, and the packing density of the material can affect the material's angle of internal friction (4,5). Introduction It is estimated that nearly 40% of all the gold ever mined in free world countries has been produced by South African operations. There is concern that this immense productive capacity will soon decline. Such a decline could reduce world gold supply and lessen the ability of market economy countries (MEC) to exert the major influence upon the world gold market. This paper addresses three general issues concerning South African gold production: • How much gold remains to be recovered from the demonstrated resources of the 44 evaluated South African mines; • How long can production at current levels continue; and • What will be its cost. Table 1 provides production data on the world's 10 largest producers for the years 1971, 1981, and 1983. As shown, South African gold production declined significantly from 1971 through 1981. As of 1981, annual South African gold production had dropped by more than 311 t (10 million oz) in 10 years. Despite this, its mines still produced 656 t (21 million oz) that year, about half the world total. From 1981 through 1983, this trend was reversed. Annual South African gold production increased by more than 21.8 t (700,000 oz). The trend reversal was also evident in the US, Canada, and Australia. This illustrates the general, inverse relationship between gold price and gold production. In South Africa especially, as gold prices increased substantially during the 1970s, the average grade of ore mined (pay limit) was lowered as new, lower grade areas and materials were exploited. Gold production declined in volume. But gold revenues increased, and the lives of the operations were extended. The 1981-83 period was one of declining (US dollar-based, average annual) gold prices that resulted in increasing South African production as average ore grades were raised. South Africa currently accounts for 50% of world production (Fig. 1). Figure 2 illustrates South Africa's contribution to total MEC production in 1971 and 1983. Although South Africa's relative share of production has declined, it still represents the single most important source of new gold supply. In 1983, it supplied more than 65% of total MEC production. South Africa currently produces more than twice as much gold as the Soviet Union (ranked second in world production), and 11 times more gold than the US (ranked fourth in world production). "Quang Ninh province is located in the north east of Vietnam and the coal mining in the province generates two thirds of the province’s GDP. The coal is extracted from both open pit and underground mines for the country’s complete coal export and by a share of more than 90% for domestic coal usage. Overburden generated through open pit mines is piled up nearby in the form of large waste rock dumps. The side-hill fill dumping near open pit mines is the source of environmental degradation in the region. Among the current problems at solid waste rock dump sites are dust emissions during and after dumping as well as Acid Rock Drainage (ARD). One of the major existing problems at waste rock dumps is dump stability (comprising erosion, sliding and subsidence issues). The RAME R&D project (Research Association Mining and Environment in Vietnam) is - among other activities - actively involved in the research for stabilisation and rehabilitation of mine waste rock dumps in Vietnam in the form of several sub-projects. The Institute of Mining Engineering I of RWTH Aachen University is leading the sub-project of mine waste dump stabilisation in co-operation with Chair of Geotechnical Engineering and Brenk Systemplanung GmbH. Mine waste dumping in the form of layers as an alternative to the side-hill fill dumping is expected to bring up environmental and economical benefits by minimising the problems of dump sites with the contribution to a sustainable development. Reduction of the post construction settlements, long term stable dump profile with minimum erosion, improvement of material parameters for geotechnical slope stability through compaction from hauling trucks as well as economical evaluation of new dumping concepts are the areas of the current research. The project has been financed by German Federal Ministry for Research and Education (BMBF). The ultimate aim of the sub-project is the compilation of the project results in the form of a "Best Practice Guide" and software based "Decision Support System" for planning and management of solid mine waste dumps."

The Mid-Tennessee Zinc (MTZ) mines, comprised of the Gordonsville, Elmwood, and Cumberland sites, last operated 4 years ago and are undergoing rehabilitation to begin production in 2008. The mines utilize a random room-and-pillar mining method that results in complex ventilation networks. Upon decommissioning, the mechanical ventilation units were removed and disposed of and several shafts sealed. In an effort to re-open the mines and operate in compliance with imminent Mine Safety Health and Administration (MSHA) diesel particulate matter (DPM) regulatory limits of 160TC µg/m3, a new ventilation system was required. The new ventilation system was developed primarily based on the diesel equipment required to meet production. Particular emphasis was placed on the DPM, diesel equipment utilization, main fan sizing, and fan locations to enable the mines to meet MSHA?s ventilation requirements in a cost efficient manner.

Rare earth elements (REEs) and their compounds are essential in a multitude of mundane and sophisticated applications such as renewable energy technologies, catalysts, medicine, and defense applications. The global supply deficit could be attributed to the destabilization of REE market that has, as a result, incentivized indigenous production of REEs. Cost-effective and environmentally benign opportunities are being explored for the production of REEs from non-conventional mineral sources including coal and coal by-products to stabilize the supply chain. Coal from Healy coal mine and Wishbone Hill deposits in Alaska have been quantified for REEs and were found to possess elevated total REE concentrations as compared to world average levels (60– 70 ppm). The objective of the study was to concentrate the REEs in the froth phase by froth-flotation of the fine size fraction (< 75 μm). A Box-Behnken design of experiment was employed to ascertain the main and interaction effects of operational parameters on response variable by analyzing 3D response surfaces. Experiments were carried out to maximize REE recovery and concentration by modeling and optimization of three operating variables (frother dosage, pulp density (% solids), and collector dosage). Based on the results, the optimum flotation conditions for maximum recovery at an elevated concentration of REEs in the froth fraction was obtained at 4.2% solids and 32.7 ppm of frother dosage for Healy sample and 10% solids and 37.9 ppm of frother dosage for Wishbone Hill coal sample. The quadratic relationship between the input and response variable was found to be independent of collector dosage suggesting good surface hydrophobicity and floatability of the two coal samples.

The planning and operation of ventilation network systems for uranium mines require special considerations since ventilation is the primary technique of controlling ambient concentrations of radon progeny. The major environmental challenge facing the ventilation engineer is the requirement to dilute radon progeny to below the Working Level Month per year of worker exposure required by law. The application of large airflow volumes and the utilization of low residence times constitute some of the factors considered by the design engineer. Good mine planning and sequencing are also critical for protecting the health of miners. The mine ventilation must have such characteristics as flexibility, high air distribution efficiency, rapid air transit times, zero recirculation and no short-circuiting. A well established maintenance program for all ventilation appliances must be in place to guarantee control of the distribution system. Real-time monitoring systems permit assurance the adequate quality of air is delivered to working places. A case study for an operating mine is used to demonstrate how the ventilation system is successfully managed and operated using the above concepts.

Kenny/Shea JV is constructing the water intake tunnel for the new Elm Road Generating Station, a supercritical coal-fired power plant in Oak Creek, Wisconsin, being built by Bechtel Power Corporation. The intake tunnel system consists of a temporary mining shaft, pump house and intake channel riser shafts, and four lakebed intake shafts. An 8.33 m diameter, 2,800 m long TBM mined rock tunnel is being constructed to connect the shafts. The intakes are located 2.4 kilometers offshore in Lake Michigan. The shafts and tunnel are being constructed in glacial tills and Silurian Dolomite. The estimated tunnel completion is December 2007.

The use of virtual reality (VR) technologies to train miners is an evolving area in research and development. In July 2006, representatives of 14 international organizations met to discuss current VR-related efforts and explore ways to employ VR in the future. This paper gives an overview of the various approaches presented at the meeting and discusses directions for future implementation. An example of a training package that teaches mine map-reading skills is presented. The meeting was the first step to building collaborations for furthering VR applications for mining. Planning has begun for a 2008 meeting open to broader participation.

"Lucky Strike and Menez Gwen are two hydrothermally active sites located along the border of the Azorean plateau, southwest of the Azores islands where the alteration processes affecting basaltic rocks are prominent (Costa et al., 2003). Here we report on a slabby brecciated rock, abundant at both Lucky Strike and Menez Gwen, composed mainly of basaltic fragments cemented by hydrothermal precipitates from warm fluid circulation system. Research reveals that hydrothermal alteration takes place mainly by replacement processes, in which silicification is dominant (Costa et al., 1997 and Costa, 2014).Petrographic observations, including scanning electron microscopy (SEM), microprobe analysis, and mass balance studies made on basaltic fragments within the breccia show that silicification is one of the main processes resulting from hydrothermal fluid circulation. This alteration process leads to complete replacement by silica, in extreme cases, forming an impermeable cap that may contribute to the formation of sub-seafloor sulphide deposits, including examples in the geological past."

Utah has produced about one billion troy oz. (31.7M tonnes) of silver, more than any U.S. state except Idaho. Several very high grade ore systems, now closed, occur within large polymetallic limestone-hosted districts related to plutonic complexes. These Utah mines fed several major lead smelters for nearly a century. Interaction of magmatic chloride-rich fluids with carbonate rocks localized significant bonanzas within these districts. A low sulfidation state was produced in the fluids by their passage through limestones. The Bingham porphyry mine has also yielded more byproduct silver than other porphyry copper-gold systems. Away from exposed intrusive rocks, some large silver-only systems occur in Mesozoic sandstone and in caldera-related veins in volcano sedimentary rocks. Thick permeable latest-Proterozoic basement meta quartzite sequences present beneath western Utah may have been important, as perhaps they were in the Coeur d’Alene district of Idaho, in providing chloride and silver-rich ore fluids. However, it is clear that specific Tertiary magmatic events played an essential role in the evolution of the Utah silver-rich metallogenic province. The largest silver districts in the state are genetically related to porphyritic plutonic rocks.

Steel fiber reinforced concrete segmental rings are the final tunnel lining for approximately 85% of the alignment for a 6.706-meter (22-foot) internal diameter tunnel being built as part of the East Side Combined Sewer Overflow Tunnel Project. This paper describes the approach adopted for the design of the steel fiber reinforced concrete segments, the development of the performance criteria for the segments, and the testing program used to confirm the performance of the materials and segments in the laboratory and in the field.

I would like to share some observations about the mining business and place the ongoing discussion in the context of our changed world. The mining industry practices its trade in a universe defined by prices, laws and governments. Prices, as in what the industry is paid for what it produces, and the costs of goods and services. Laws that have to be transparent and fair. And governments that the industry prefers to be stable and supportive of the industry, and certainly not corrupt. However, the day-to-day realities of the mining business in 2000 are not what they were 10 years ago. Several events have occurred that have resulted in a less populated workplace that is obliged to work much smarter and faster. These include real declining prices for most mineral commodities; low and diminishing returns to company shareholders; massive restructuring of the industry through mergers, partnerships and alliances; gold’s changed role from reserve currency to just another commodity; the growing importance of native title and the startling imperatives of “sustainable development.” In addition, the “borderless world” now means that resource companies will need to pass the test of being responsible corporate guests who respect and enhance the social, moral and societal values of their host countries.

This section of the Handbook deals with general principles to be evaluated in the development of a mining operation. It addresses the major issues that must be examined to fully evaluate a mining venture. Of course, one of the main topics to be evaluated is mine planning, which is covered in more detail in other sections (13, 17) of the Handbook and should be referenced in mine development projects. The topics to be discussed in this introduction include equipment and supplies, infrastructure, utilities, and project management. In any of the aspects mentioned, the current existing conditions at or near the mine site must be evaluated. This will include assessment of current use of utilities, infrastructure, housing, equipment suppliers, etc., as well as anticipated growth, both in the supply aspect of these systems as well as projected usage on these systems. After full assessment of both these aspects, an evaluation must be made as to the requirements the project will place on these items. Assessment must be made as to any up-grades required to bring the project on line, what impact the project will have on existing or expanded systems, and anticipated future growth impacts on support systems not only of the project but of other surrounding industry and urban devel-opment

During 1996 and 1997, Oregon experienced flooding on a scale not seen in many years. Some gravel pits located near rivers experienced erosion. In several cases, breaches occurred between the gravel pit and the river. Initial evaluation of several sites that experienced these breaches showed that impacts to the river system were complex and varied significantly from site to site. The impacts to the adjacent river system may be viewed as positive and negative. Several flood-plain-mining sites in Oregon located in areas of historic river flow reverted to active riverbeds. In many cases, state and federal fisheries biologists and university researchers saw the resulting increase in channel complexity and habitat as favorable. The Oregon Department of Geology and Mineral Industries —Mined Land Reclamation Program (DOGAMI-MLR) is studying the effects to the off-channel areas that resulted from the 1996 floods. More data is needed to make sound flood-plain decisions regarding mining.

The Manapouri Power Station is an underground hydro-electric station located in the South Island of New Zealand, and was constructed in the 1960s. Between 1997and 2002, a second 10m diameter tailrace tunnel was constructed to increase the out-put and to improve the overall hydraulic efficiency and output of the station. A critical economic and project approval consideration for the second tunnel was the outage time required for the breakthrough into the power station. The power station is in part dedicated to providing power to an aluminum smelter with the balance to the National Grid, and apart from the physical problems associated with providing an alter-native power supply to the smelter, the loss of generation revenue and supply risk were significant issues. Innovative planning reduced the planned outage time from several months to21 days, and the breakthrough was eventually achieved in 11 days as a result of additional value engineering measures implemented during construction. This paper describes the engineering optimization that took place during the planning stages of the project and later during construction, as well as describing the construction methodology used.

A cover with capillary barrier effects (CCBE) is being constructed on the AA Leach Pad at the Barrick Goldstrike Mine site near Carlin, Nevada. The purpose of the cover is to eliminate/minimize infiltration of meteoric waters into the leach pad. Laboratory and numerical analyses indicate that Carlin Formation siltstone (TCS), a locally available material, has the necessary hydrologic characteristics when placed on the leach pad to act as a CCBE. A pilot study has been conducted on a small-scale test cover placed on the AA Leach Pad to examine the cover performance under irrigated conditions. The preliminary test results demonstrate that the designed cover is capable of preventing meteoric water infiltration.

The Shiloh Church deposit is a very significant molybdenum occurrence in an ususual, perhaps unique, geologic environment. Work done to date indicate that several million tons of "ore" may be present, occurring as a matrix in limestone and dolomite breccias. Mineralized rocks cored to date are at or near the surface and the deeper resource potential has not been tested. The prospect is located in Polk County, north- western Georgia (Fig. 1). The "ore zone" was outlined by North American Exploration, Inc. (NAE) using geochemical prospecting techniques. Extensive geological work, including core drilling, has been conducted on the properties, together with geochemical and geophysical surveys. The geology, geochemistry and geophysics of the prospect are discussed. It is hoped that these data can be used to formulate exploration programs in similar terranes located elsewhere in the eastern U.S.A.

In order to better understand the effects of longwall mining on the methane reservoir overlying the panel, the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health/Pittsburgh Research Laboratory (NIOSH/PRL) designed and implemented a vertical borehole monitoring experiment (BME) on an active longwall panel. The mine operates in the Pittsburgh Coalbed in Greene County, Pennsylvania. The BME site was located away from either end of the panel to avoid mechanical influences caused by the draping of overburden in this region and was positioned at the same distance from the tailgate gateroad as the mine?s gob gas venthole sites. The borehole drilling depths and monitoring intervals were chosen to address a different stratigraphic zone in each of the three planned holes. The monitoring boreholes were positioned perpendicular to face advance using a close spacing pattern of about 15 m (50 ft) between collars. Boreholes were instrumented downhole and on the surface for various measurements. It was observed from the field data that the gob gas venthole fracture network formed 24-46 m (80-150 ft) ahead of the mining face. Overburden permeability?s within the same test zones increased 100 to 500 times following undermining. The borehole test interval within the fractured rock responded to overburden gas pressure while the test interval in the caved zone responded to mine ventilation conditions. Eight months after the boreholes were undermined, slug testing indicated permeabilities had increased further in the fractured rock zone. Measurements of surface movement indicate that the permeability development observed in the boreholes is a product of vertical subsidence without lateral movement within the tensional rock mechanics zone on a supercritical longwall panel. Results from this study suggest that maximum permeability in the longwall panel overburden is achieved 58 to 190 m (190 to 620 ft) behind the longwall following maximum compaction of the overburden.
