Newmont Gold Company's Mill No. 4 is located along the Carlin trend, about 25 miles North of Carlin, Nevada. The plant consists of a primary grinding circuit using a 7.2 m (22 ft) diameter by 2.6 m (8 ft) long semi-autogenous mill along with a 2.3 m (7 ft) diameter cone crusher. Secondary grinding is performed in a 4.8 m (14.5 ft) diameter by 9.2 m (28 ft) long overflow ball mill in closed circuit with a set of 66 cm (26 in) diameter cyclones. The ground product is fed to a typical carbon-in-leach gold leach circuit. The grinding/crushing circuit operation and control scheme are the topics of this paper.

Sulphur as an element has been used for centuries. The technique of storing, handling and transporting it in its various forms has changed through the years. Freeport Sulphur Company, a division of Freeport Minerals Company, has produced sulphur since 1912. The first storing and transporting of this product as a liquid began in 1947. Significant environmental problems occurred in the handling of solid sulphur in the late fifties and early sixties. Since the sulphur WAS produced in the liquid form and the major customers used it in the liquid form, it became obvious that a liquid transportation system was the solution. The liquid sulphur delivery eliminated the dusty and hazardous handling problems and the contamination of the sulphur by dirt, acid, moisture and other materials. The remelting by the customer to use the sulphur is thusly eliminated with a savings in energy. In addition, this change in the mode of handling permitted a broad development of new sulphur mines in the marshy coastal area of Louisiana and offshore in the Gulf of Mexico.

The Tessenderlo-Kerley Leachprocess has been shown to be effective in the removal of residual copper from molybdenite concentrates. Concentrates of varying mineralogy, including those containing relatively large amounts of chalcopyrite, have been successfully leached on laboratory and pilot plant scales. The lixiviant system is ammonia andammonium bisulfite with air / oxygen addition. An abrasive is added which greatly enhances the kinetics, and it is subsequently screened out and reused. The dissolved copper is easily recovered using existing technology. Extraction profiles, reagent consumptions, and mineralogical data are presented.

Coupled influence of sulphidizers and xanthates on the electrokinetic property and flotation behavior of malachite was systematically examined via electrophoretic mobility measurements and microflotation tests. The electrophoretic mobility results for the malachite before and after surface modification with different types (Na2S and (NH4)2S) and amounts (1×10-7?1×10-4 moles/g) of sulphidizers, showed that the isoelectric points (IEP) of malachite differed at the low dosage level depending on the type of the sulphidizer, which ranged between 5 and 9.5. However, the IEP values were observed to be shifted from high to low pH values with increasing amount of sulphidizers and finally ranged between 3 and 4, indicating that the sulphidizers played a different role on changing the surface property of malachite. In order to further understand the effect of sulphidizers on the electrokinetic property and flotation behavior of malachite in a sulphidizer+xanthate system, flotation tests were carried out with malachite sulphidized with Na2S and (NH4)2S (adsorptive amount=8×10-5 moles/g) at different bulk xanthate concentrations. The results showed that the flotability of (NH4)2S-treated malachite was greater than Na2S-treated one over the entire xanthate concentration investigated, indicating that the type of sulphidizers played important role in malachite flotation; however, no obvious correlation between electrokinetic property and flotability of malachite was observed.

Computer-controlled machine sorting may, if properly applied, have a dramatic effect on overall economics of a mine operation. Radiometric and photometric sorters have been used for many years and new developments will be reported, such as a sorter for fine particles and a conductivity/magnetic sorter. Application examples with emphasis on precious metals will be given. Economics for some of the projects will be reviewed and discussed. Sorting underground is shown to be particularly attractive, but machine sorting would be profitable in most cases based on savings in transportation and milling/beneficiation costs only.

Conventional methods of drill hole site selection are reviewed briefly. Two approaches using geostatistics are then discussed, both of which have been shown to yield improved results. Finally, a branch and bound algorithm is described which will select the best locations for drilling from a user specified number of possible drill sites. Two options are discussed. First, the user can specify a maximum drilling investment or a maximum number of drill holes and the program will select the locations yielding the minimum estimation variance. This amounts to getting the most for a given investment. Alternatively, a maximum tolerable estimation variance can be specified and the program will select the number and location of the drill holes to obtain the desired information at a minimum cost. Another benefit of the approach is the quantification of the tradeoffs between investment and information obtained.

An understanding of how health and safety management systems (HSMS) reduce worksite injuries, illnesses and fatalities may be gained in studying the behaviors of health and safety leaders. These leaders bear the accountability for identifying, understanding and managing the risks of a mining operation. More importantly, they have to transfer this knowledge of perception, recognition and response to risks in the mining environment to their workers. The leaders’ efforts to build and maintain a mining operation’s workforce that consistently executes safe work practices may be captured through more than just lagging indicators of health and safety performance. This exploratory study interviewed six leaders in occupations such as site-level safety supervisors, mine superintendents and/or general managers at surface and underground stone, sand and gravel and metal/nonmetal mine sites throughout the United States, with employee populations ranging from 40 to 175. In exploring leaders’ perspectives on how they systematically manage health and safety, examples such as approaches to task training, handling near-miss incidents, identifying future leaders and providing workers with feedback offer insights into how leaders translate their knowledge and management of site-level risks to others.

Corrosion of equipment and machinery in the coal industry is usually the result of three main agents: acids, chlorides, and abrasion. Acids and chlorides are especially troublesome in coal preparation plants where soluble salts and sulfur in the coal produce a highly corrosive wash solution. Abrasion is common in all operations where coal is handled or conveyed. Together, the acid-chloride-abrasion combination results in some of the worst corrosive conditions found in any industry. The variety of equipment and structures in the coal industry calls for different corrosion control techniques. Table 1 lists the areas of concern for a number of items. Just as there is a wide variety of corrosion problems, there is a wide array of coating materials available. Tables 2 and 3 are selection charts to provide guidance in narrowing down the choices. Experience has shown that a limited number of coating systems work best on coal equipment and structures. These systems are described in Table 4. The good-better-best designation in the table refers to coating system longevity. Good indicates the least costly and shortest service life. In nearly all cases the lowest annualized cost can be achieved by using the coating system rated best, due to the avoidance of costly repaints and unnecessary downtime. The most expensive coating system, though, is worthless unless the coating system is properly applied. Field inspection to insure compliance with specifications is an important aspect, and is a service available from many coating suppliers. Even the best coating systems require periodic maintenance to achieve satisfactory results. Spot rusting from mechanical damage should be repaired annually to maximize the coatingsystem's results.

What exactly does clean coal mean? Mining coal creates dust and releases methane gas. And burning coal liberates CO2 and emits particulates, including SO2 and NOx. Coal creates wastes that are often stored in unsightly and potentially dangerous slag heaps and lagoons. When clean coal technology is discussed, it sometimes seems that creating modern or ?ultra super critical? coal-fired power stations is presented as the main or even the only answer. However, there may be a more holistic approach. Using the energy potential of coal is always going to have environmental impacts. Some of these will be negative. But the need to secure future energy resources demands that society tackle these negative issues and find ways to minimize and offset them.

Glenrock, WY is underlain by two abondoned coal mines. Subsidence events have been recorded over the years, with the frequency increasing in recent years. As part of Wyoming's Abondoned Wins Lands Program, investigations including mining history/methods/mappings, subsurface drilling and material site searches were performed. Portions of the mines less than eighty feet from the surface, were identified as probable for subsidence. Subsidence control by hydraulic backfill was selected. Design included search and injection boreholes, water supply from the mines and the slurry mixing, transport and injection system. Injection system performance and backfill success is king monitored during construction.

In the USA, miners are at higher risk for work-related disorders that could precipitate an opioid prescription, injury-related opioid prescriptions, and opioid overdose. We aimed to support prevention of these outcomes with an “opioid hazard awareness” miner safety training module. In January and February 2020, the training module was embedded within required mining safety and health training for stone, sand, and gravel miners in Massachusetts (USA). Training impact and reception were assessed with a pre- and post-training survey of trainee characteristics, training content knowledge, and attitudes. Over 800 miners were trained and over 600 responded to surveys. We found statistically significant improvements in opioid risk factor knowledge and knowledge of resources to help a coworker. Nonstigmatizing attitudes were high both at baseline and following the training. The training was perceived as relevant and useful by trainees. Improving opioid hazard awareness in high-risk worker populations has potential to reduce opioid dependence and downstream impacts including overdose death. Employer injury-prevention efforts should be reinforced while worker health and safety training enhances awareness of opioid-related harms and prevention strategies for miners and other high-risk worker populations.

In the Rocky Mountain region, variations in Tertiary mineralization correlate with changes in tectonic setting and associated igneous activity that can largely be related to tectonics along the west boundary of the American plate. Successive settings include compressional tectonics and associated continental-arc igneous activity; transitional igneous types associated with intra- and back-arc extension; and basaltic or bimodal basalt-rhyolite assemblages associated with Basin and Range extension in- ward of a growing transform boundary between Pacific and American plates.

Your committee doesn't assign any easy topics to us speakers. How do you define "successful" in what is essentially a losing game? I am reminded of the fellow who returned from a one-week vacation in Las Vegas, and proudly stated, "I only lost $150." To him, that was "success." I am afraid that workers' compensation is a losing game for employers, too, and success has to be defined in terms of how much or how little is lost. We have no chance of producing a profit for our employer. We will narrow down to some suggestions about conducting a workers' compensation program at the plant level, but first I want to discuss the general legal, social and legislative climate in which your plant program operates. Workers' compensation is a statutory program with its general parameters established by the legislature. These parameters are then amplified by the boards and commissions established to administer workers' compensation. What influences the legislature and the boards and commissions as they establish the framework in which we must function?

Failure of in-pit overburden dumps in open-pit coal mines causes debris to flow toward the active working face, threatening the safety of people and equipment. The evaluation of the potential mobility of failing mass will aid in hazard mitigation associated with unwarranted dump failure. The potential mobility is shown by mobility ratio (ratio of total drop between debris flow's initial and final deposition points to total travel distance) and runout characteristics. In light of above, a laboratoryscale debris flow flume was developed to investigate the effect of material gradation and slope angle on runout characteristics and mobility ratio. The total mass of experimental debris mix (Q) is fixed at 30 kg with 20% water content. Experiments at three different slope angles (30°, 35°, and 40°) demonstrate that increasing the proportion of fines in the experimental mix increases runout characteristics while decreasing the mobility ratio. The length and area of the runout decrease as the slope angle increases, while the mobility ratio increases. There is a positive correlation between d50 and runout characteristics at a fines content of 0.1Q, but a negative correlation at a fines content of 0.2Q and 0.3Q. Conversely, there is a negative correlation between d50 and mobility ratio for fines content of 0.1Q, but a positive correlation exists for fines content of 0.2Q and 0.3Q. A new index called the fine-to-coarse (F/C) ratio is used to identify the critical value of fines and coarse proportion that causes a transition from dry granular flow to fluidized debris flow.

Since the Hardy Cross numerical algorithm was applied to the solution of mine ventilation networks, there have been numerous developments in ventilation network analysis procedures. The Newton-Raphson method, the linear theory method, and the second-order approximation method are three of the additional approaches that have been applied. The efficiency of a ventilation network analysis procedure depends not only on the method of solving the system of equations derived from ventilation networks, but also on the method of deriving the equations through selection of the meshes. This paper investigates the impacts of three mesh selection methods on the efficiencies of four ventilation network procedures. The minimum-resistance spanning tree method is the most popular procedure for selecting meshes. The shortest-path method was suggested by Epp and Fowler (1970) for improvement of the Newton-Raphson method. The minimum-resistance-path method is suggested here as the third method of selecting meshes. The effects of these three methods on the Hardy Cross method, the Newton-Raphson method, the linear theory method, and the second-order approximation method are analyzed in this paper. These network analysis methods have been summarized in the paper by Kim and Mutmansky (1991).

I am indeed honored to be the 1991 recipient of the Daniel C. Jackling Award. To be voted this honor by my peers in the Society for Mining, Metallurgy, and Exploration and AIME means more to me than I can truly express. Daniel Jackling's position and prominence in the mining industry first came to my attention in the fall of 1949 when I transferred from Wisconsin Institute of Technology, then a three-year school, to the Missouri School of Mines to complete my last year for a bachelor's degree in mining engineering. I played basketball in the Jackling gym and ran track on the Jackling field. I didn't know a lot about Jackling then, except he was an honored graduate of the school and, obviously, supported the school financially. Over the years, Jackling's name kept coming up. He was a man with a reputation for being a doer, a mining leader who was always a step ahead, a mining engineer who knew how to motivate men in the working place, to organize mining systems, to finance and organize corporations. to open up new, low-grade ore bodies for exploitation. If Jackling were alive today, I would expect he would bean excellent candidate to apply practical rock mechanics to his projects. Looking over the list of Jackling Award recipients, I have known many, have met many personally and had a few who were dear friends that affected my own professional life. Ab Shoemaker, '58, and I consulted at the White Pine Copper Co. on mining problems in the 1960s. We arranged for our visits to the mine to coincide so that we could collaborate on our ideas. I would rent an auto and drive for Ab. He said he was the only mining engineer in the country that had a PhD for a chauffeur. James Boyd, '67, was my mentor as regards the White Pine Rock Mechanics Program that we organized in 1963. Only through Boyd's forsight. leadership, dedication and willingness to spend money on research and development did the Practical Rock Mechnics Program at White Pine succeed. He never wavered in his support to that program or to me personally. Tom Howard, '75, was my predecessor in 1970 as Director of Mining Research for the US Bureau of Mines. When I joined the Bureau in August 1970, he had the research centers up and running. Any successes I may have had with the Bureau of Mines were due in great part to Tom's leadership and organization throughout the 1960s. Gene Cameron, '68, was my teacher at the University of Wisconsin and I remember him fondly. He was the one professor who lectured in a manner that made me welcome going to his classes each day, a truly remarkable educator. If you have come today to listen to me talk about instrumentation, rock properties, stress-strain relationships, rock mechanics theory, etc., you will be disappointed. Large volumes of data have been collected by well qualified theoreticians to define stress-strain conditions in mines. Unfortunately, very little of this data has been used by industry due to the lack of initiative and understanding by the researchers to the true problems of implementation in the industry. I hope my remarks will assist future investigators to work through the maze of operational problems so they will experience the satisfaction of seeing their research used. I fully realize that the Jackling Award is given by the Society for Mining, Metallurgy, and Exploration and is primarily offered for accomplishments in hardrock mining. I have found it impossible to separate hardrock and coal mining when I talk about "Applied Rock Mechanics." There is too much overlap and the same mechanics principles are applied to both. For example, coal mine designs have been applied to salt, trona and potash. Also, the original layout and design of White Pine Copper Mine was based on coal mine designs. This formal literature review identifies strengths and shortcomings of current literature related to mine rescue, self-rescue, and self-escape technology. Key concepts and factors that influence the decision making behind mine rescue and self-escape were identified. Historically, underground mining has been one of the most dangerous occupations due to the harsh nature of working environments. During the latter half of the twentieth century, and into the twenty-first century, mining fatalities have declined, yet large-scale mine emergencies persist. The emergence of new technologies, in combination with evidencebased mine emergency research, is resulting in new training methods, monitoring systems, and self-escape approaches being tried in operating mines. This review identifies areas in which substantial research is being conducted, such as the use of virtual reality and game-based training and areas that warrant further development such as the measurement and information gathering capabilities of unmanned ground and aerial vehicles, as well as emergency management and incident command systems. This paper summarizes the current underground mine rescue and self-escape landscape in the USA, including the breadth and depth of mine rescue and self-escape training and practices as evident in the literature.

All the more reason to hone technical skills, reconnect with old contacts and get one’s finger on the pulse of the industry.More than 400 did just that in the balmy sunshine and among the saguaro cactus of the Tucson venue of the SME Arizona Conference.Giving the keynote speech was Patrick Merrin, vice president at Hudbay Minerals (see box), while the luncheon speaker was University Distinguished Professor Mary Poulton, director of the Lowell Institute for Mineral Resources at The University of Arizona.“Attendance was great, especially given the copper price,” said Ta Li, vice president of business development at Tetra Tech and 2001 SME President. “The luncheon speaker was one of the better ones in recent years. Her talk contained a lot of fresh ideas, and practical versus theoretical concepts.”Talk about values, not economicsPraise was unanimous for Poulton, who gave a thought-provoking talk on “The New Face of Mining: The Culture Change for Compatible Mining.” Corporate social responsibility has been embraced by the metals mining industry, and it’s being done right, she said. “So why do we have more conflict? Why are there more protests? Why does permitting take longer and longer?” Poulton made a case for an approach based on compatible, rather than sustainable, mining to present a new face of mining that can be compatible with communities, cultures and the environment, and still be profitable. When the mining industry starts to talk about compatibility between what it is doing and what “me,” as the consumer, wants, what “we,” as citizens of a community, want, and what’s good for the “world,” we’re going to see the next culture change happen, she concluded."

In Novemeber of last year I visited a mica mine in Hunan Province, China. For nine months , we had been trying to sell Chinese mica to a customer in Belgium. Talking to the customer was like negotitating with a stone wall. The buyer refused to communicate any -thing other than his steadfast refusal to consider Chinese mica. He would not advise us what he wanted, what specifications or grades. He would give no indication if our price at market, or reasonable, or totally out to lunch. He would not even accept samples. It took no genius to guess that the mica buyer had at some time in the past bought a shipment of Chinese mica and had received a disaster. I invited the mica mine in Hunan in order to see for myself what could be done - without massive investment in equipment and instruments - to upgrade the quality of the mica for export. We had seen this type of customer reaction before. One disgruntled customer who had pur¬chased pigment grade barites direct from China ranted and raved about unreliable and inconsistent quality. It did no good to explain to him that China is a big country, with hundreds of mines scattered throughout many areas, each producing a different product. Our further explanation that Chinese export organizations also varied in degree and efficiency of customer service fell on deaf ears. Samples had no effect on his perception. Eventually we showed him photoraphs of two mountains of pigment grade barites. One lot was our sales of pigment barites to a major European minerals processor. Our Chinese barites stood proudly white and beautiful next to a hill of other material which now appeared at best mediocre and dull by comparison, and which the buyer had decided to reject after he received our Chinese barites. Finally the customer was sufficiently impressed to look seriously at our guaranteed specification and the outturn analysis performed by our other customer.
