Over the past decade, heap leaching at Cortez has evolved from a rather small operation producing around 30,000 ounces per year of gold to an operation scheduled to produce over 400,000 ounces in 2004. Evolution and expansions in the heap leach operations are discussed including plant design criteria and some of the design features in the various facilities. Operating parameters and production forecasting are also discussed.

This is a response to M. J. Hrebar's paper, which tracks in detail the highly productive stripping capabilities of modern large bulldozers at two separate installations. It proves the old adage "economies of scale" and quantifies the advantage of being able to move large loads of dirt over comparatively short haul distances by sliding rather than carrying the load. This discussion examines whether a bulldozer is the most efficient way of using this geotechnical principle.

The paper deals with the application of artificial intelligence methods in assessing the effectiveness of longwall shield support. A fuzzy sets based method is used to derive response surfaces/curves representing the dependence between basic parameters of the shield, as the initial setting pressure and the stiffness on the response metric, i.e. the convergence and load increase during a working cycle.

Commercial operations at the open pit, heap leach Crofoot Mine commenced in April, 1988. Approximately 13,600 tonnes (15,000 st) of low grade pregnant solution are treated daily using a Merrill-Crowe circuit. Acceptable gold recoveries from these low grade solutions can be obtained by optimizing solution pre-treatment prior to zinc addition.

This paper will discuss some of the equipment used to construct the middle segment of the MetroWest Water Supply Tunnel. The $252 million, seven-year project located in Framingham, Massachusetts consisted of two hard rock TBM drives worked from a single shaft. The 24,407-foot long west heading was constructed at the same time as the 35,006-foot long east heading. Also included was raise bore construction of four, 30-inch diameter steel lined riser shafts, one 12-foot finish and one 10-footfinish shaft as well as two major valve chambers. The main shaft was 400-feet deep and 32-foot diameter.

Reduction of the total energy expenditure in mining and ore preparation processes was achieved by redistribution of the energy from the crushing and grinding steps to the blasting operation. Reducing the burden/spacing distance by 25% or increasing the charge length by 25% during blasting results in significant energy savings in subsequent comminution processes. The energy cost of mining and comminution is reduced by up to 10%.

The April 13, 1992, flooding in the freight tunnel network under the city of Chicago had a profound effect on the nearby Chicago Transit Authority (CTA) subway service. The "FIRST AUTOMATIC SHOTCRETE TECHNIQUE" (F.A.S.T.) system, provides safe, efficient methods of remotely lining, shafts/raises. Two systems are available; one system will be used to shotcrete a 3.04m (10-ft.) diameter ventilation raise at a mine in Mexico; the other system incorporating remote control and sensing devices will to used to shotcrete ventilation raises from 2.75-4.9m (9-16 ft.) in diameter. The Sustainable Minerals Roundtable was established in 1999 to develop a set of national level indicators to measure the contributions of mineral and energy systems to sustainable development in the USA. The U.S. Forest Service and the U.S. Geological Survey are sponsors of the Sustainable Minerals Roundtable, with meetings convened by the University of Nevada, Reno. Eighteen meetings have been held in various regions of the United States to receive input from different communities of interest. Indicators are being prepared under four criteria: legal and institutional, productive capacity, environmental impact, and socio-economic. This paper reviews the process followed by the Sustainable Minerals Roundtable, and presents the priority indicators.

The lignite surface mines of Ptolemais basin operate according to special environmental terms regarding the concentrations of heavy metals and trace elements in water discharges. Based ?n the results of lab analyses and in-situ measurements conducted so far it is concluded that the concentrations of heavy - toxic metals and other trace elements are low or negligible. The deviations from the upper concentration limits specified by laws and regulations are rare and non-systematic both on their spatial or temporal distribution. The same results prove also the relation between water quality and type and nature of the sediments forming the Ptolemais basin and the carbonated and metamorphic rocks forming the surrounding mountain areas.

Investigations were undertaken to improve the recovery of silver from CRA's Hidden Valley gold/silver deposit by the addition of calcium peroxide. The addition of 0.75 to 1.5 kg/mt of calcium peroxide improved silver extraction by 5 - 300 and reduced cyanide consumption by up to 30%. Gold extraction was also marginally improved in some of the tests. The results are of economic interest and plant trials will be initiated once operations are underway.

Results of the application of the micro-gravity method in predicting rock bursts and rock mass deformations are discussed. Research was done in the Daisy black coal mine, Upper Silesia, Poland, during 1979-1980. At that time, microgravity investigations helped increase the safety of coalbed exploitation in progress. During the first stage of exploitation, a mining shock of 107 J energy was predicted in a region where 40 miners worked.

This presentation will describe the underground excavation at the Bad Creek Pump Storage project. It consists of approximately 3,650 m of various size tunnels ranging from 4.2 m to 9.0 m finished diameter, a powerhouse cavern 45 m high by 135 m long by 22.5 m wide, and 422 m of 9 m diameter shaft. A total of 350,000 m of rock will be excavated, hauled, and placed in a submerged wier. Temporary rock support consisting of shotcrete and/or rockbolts is installed as required.
