Independence Mining Company, Inc. (IMC) has for the past several years processed refractory gold ores at its Jerritt Canyon operation near Elko, Nevada. The ore is typical of those of the Carlin Trend and is refractory due to physical encapsulation of gold in carbon, pyrite, and arsenopyrite. It is also "preg robbing" due to the contained organic carbon that acts as a gold adsorber. Refractory ores require some form of pretreatment before cyanidation to enable economical recovery of gold. The metallurgical facility at Jerritt Canyon is unique in that it consists of two distinct pretreatment methods for the recovery of gold: a chemical process utilizing chlorine and a pyro-metal­lurgical process employing oxidative roasting. This paper pro­vides a comparison of the two methods highlighting flow sheets, pretreatment operation detail, performance comparisons, and pertinent environmental data.

The Coal Utilization review arrived too late to appear in the May issue. Coal utilization technology is improving due to the urgency with the 1990 Clean Air Act and the incentives provided by the Clean Coal Technology (CCT) program. Advances in the CCT are the subject of this report because of their broad industry application, support and involvement. Clean coal demonstration program Projects in the $5 billion Clean Coal Technology program are jointly funded cooperative agreements - not contracts - between government and industry. The industry participant in each project contributes at least 50% of the total cost. The participant takes primary responsibility for the project and is awarded any patent rights for inventions that may occur during the demonstration. The government, on the other hand, ensures that schedules are met, costs are controlled and project objectives are met.

The solution mining review did not arrive in time for publication in the May issue. The term solution mining is commonly used to refer to heap leaching, dump leaching, in situ mining and bore hole slurry mining technologies. The US Bureau of Mines is continuing with research in these areas. Commercial application of these technologies is progressing. There is an ongoing cooperative research project between the Bureau of Mines and the Santa Cruz Joint Venture to evaluate in situ copper mining at a field site near Casa Grande, AZ. The project is currently in the environmental permitting stage. The Bureau is preparing an environmental assessment for the project as part of the National Environmental Policy Act. The Bureau is also continuing with laboratory experiments to study the leaching characteristics of atacamite ore from the field test site, as

Biodiversity assessments that are developed in different stages of a mining project, have different objectives that define the methodology to be used in each of these stages. In this way, we define two stages of a project: 1) the time at which assesses the state of biodiversity or biological components, before any intervention in the project area, previously defining the area of direct influence and indirect influence of the project for each biological group to be evaluated and 2) the time when certain groups or biological, are monitored during the developmental stages of the project with you to obtain information about the level impact they may have, for project activities. It discusses the methodological differences that must be used in both biodiversity assessments: to develop biological baselines and in those assessments aimed at monitoring different components of biodiversity.

During the cyanide leaching of gold ores containing copper minerals, aurocyanide (Au(CN)f) is produced and typically recovered using activated carbon. However, free cyanide, as well as cyanide associated with cuprous cyanide complexes, are generally not recovered from the barren liquor. This results in a significant economic penalty in high cyanide consumption due to the dissolution of copper. 1\vo different configurations of a novel method for the treatment of barren liquor streams for cop­per recovery and cyanide recycle are described. Recovery of copper and cyanide is affected using solvent extraction (XI 7950). Loaded organic is stripped with a high copper, high caus­tic solution which is electrowon to produce copper metal. Depleted electrolyte is treated with sulfuric acid to recover cyanide which is returned to the leaching circuit. Results of benchscale and mini-pilot plant experiments are presented.

A general study of gold refractory arsenopyrite pyrite concentrate bioleaching has been carried out including two continuous bioleach testworks at different sizes, namely one at a laboratory scale with a 100 1 unit at a 2 kg/d dry solid flowrate and the other at a pilot scale at a 100 kg/d dry solid flowrate. Both tests show a 80% bioleaching of arsenopyrite in about four days of treatment and with the same kinetic. Pyrrhotite is attacked at the earlier stage of the bioleaching but pyrite remains unaffected. The weak potential of oxidation associated with the decomposition of arsenopyrite and the abundance of arsenite leads to a high grade of elemental sulfur in the bioresidue which consumes the major part of the cyanide during the gold recovery, furthermore, the arsenite and ferrous produced in solution have to he oxidized to obtain a stable precipitate in the waste products and as outlined in previous works of other authors on this subject the addition of iron to obtain a Fe/As molar ratio at least above 3 is necessary. The agitation equipment used in the pilot unit allowed an optimisation study calculation for scaling-up the design and power requirements of an industrial installation, For the pretreatment of a gold refractory As high-graded concentrate the reagent cost has the greatest part in the operating cost of the biooxidation step due to the necessary retreatment of the biosolution, In that conditions the power cost is quite marginal, actually it is significant for the treatment of pure pyrite.

Heap leaching was introduced to the precious metals mining industry approximately two decades ago as a simple, low cost method for recovering gold and silver from ores. Since that time, operational experience has contributed to knowledge and understanding of the process, making it a reliable alternative to conventional milling processes for low grade ores. At time of this writing, dozens of heap leach operations are active producing hundreds of thousands of ounces of gold and millions of ounces of silver annually. These successes have caused the popular press to acclaim heap leaching "high-tech" gold mining, but, despite the hype, the process remains a simple one. An example of simplicity in heap leaching is the operation established in 1986 at Amax Gold's Sleeper Mine. Starting with a simple goal, namely to produce gold from sub-mill grade ore at low cost, heap leaching was rapidly implemented at Sleeper; only five months after testwork started, leaching commenced on the first commercial scale, 50,000 ton heap of low grade ore. Sized at 600,000 tons per year to produce 10,500 oz gold per year, the low grade heap operation has performed beyond expectations. During the first year of production, 881,800 tons have been leached producing 15,665 oz of gold and 35,528 oz of silver. Operating ·costs for the first year have averaged $112 per oz gold produced ( or $95 per oz if silver credit is included). Successful implementation of heap leaching at Sleeper has had a dramatic impact on ore reserves and future operations.

A laboratory centrifugal concentrator was used to evaluate two gravity circuit configurations treating a flash flotation concentrate at a Canadian gold mill. The Initial circuit consisted of a 76 cm (30 Inch) plant Knelson Concentrator (PKC) for coarse gold removal. Later, a hydroseparator and spiral were Installed, with the hydroseparator underflow feeding the spiral and the spiral tailings plus hydroseparator overfiow reporting to a 51 cm (20 Inch) PKC. Gold recovery In the 76 cm PKC averaged 45%. Gold was recovered consistently In all size fractions greater than 38 µm, where recovery dropped to 22% for the -38 µm material. Changing the circuit to Include the hydroseparator and spiral decreased the Knelson unit recovery to less than 17%. The decrease was attributed to the spiral which recovered much of the free gold ahead of the Knelson and to changes In the mill feed (free gold portions were finer and less abundant). The spiral demonstrated erratic behaviour although It still recovered significant coarse gold (+75 µm) yielding unit recoveries of 18-44%. Although mechanical difficulties were experienced with the 76 cm PKC, Its performance was superior to that of the hydroseparator, spiral and 51 cm PKC configuration. Much of the gold In the ball mill recirculating load was found to be too coarse for significant recovery In the flash flotation cell and should be recovered by gravity from the cyclone underflow or ball mill discharge. The LKC proved to be a successful device to evaluate gravity recoverable gold content. Dilution of test samples with silica further enhanced this methodology.

A hydraulic rock breaker was developed in Germany by Helmut Darda and uses a wedge-plug and feathers mechanism powered by a 10,000 p.s.i. power pack. During the past four years these tools have been increasingly used all over North America for secondary breaking of boulders and rock. More recently, techniques have been developed to break rock off the solid in trenches and rock emplacements where blasting is pro¬hibited or very limited. Underground operations are commencing to adopt the splitter for scaling plus including systems which can be efficiently applied to chambers and mines. Mr. Neil Duncan, who was originally scheduled to give the main part of this presentation has, during this past month accepted a position with the Alberta Energy Resources Conservation Board in Calgary. The board encourages its members to take part in seminars such as this but, unfortunately, due to the heavy pressure of work, it was impossible for him to attend this conference. Mr. Duncan has, however, forwarded me his notes and suggest¬ions, and using these, combined with a slide presentation, we feel that we can quickly and clearly define the operations and application of the hydraulic splitting technique as it applies to your profession and tunnelling work. The first question that most of you are asking is, "Why use a hydraulic splitter if you can blast?" A combined chemical and biological treatment for the removal of heavy metals and arsenic from a contaminated soil was studied as a potential method for soil remediation. Small scale and column tests were conducted in order to ex-amine the effect of plant-compost and Na2CaEDTA addition on a calcareous soil highly contaminated with heavy metals and arsenic. EDTA is known to be an efficient leaching agent of heavy metals from contaminated soils but has no effect on arsenic. Compost tea on the other hand contains humics that can leach several iron compounds including Fe(III)-oxides and thus can extract arsenic bound to these oxides. The action of Fe(III)-respiring bacteria D.palmitatis was also evaluated for the reduction of iron oxides and compared to simple chemical treatment in the presence of compost in small scale tests. Results indicated that the addition of compost and EDTA into soil pulp lead to the predominance of reductive conditions and the simultaneous dissolution of both heavy metals and arsenic at high percentages. The presence of D.palmitatis did not further enhance the reductive dissolution of Fe(III)-oxides by compost and EDTA as it was observed in the inoculated samples. Column tests using soil as received revealed that, although the extraction of metals seems to be a slow process, compost is an effective oxygen barrier that promotes the reductive dissolution of iron oxides and the subsequent arsenic release together with the dissolution of heavy metals by EDTA.

The basic story at Bear Swamp was how to excavate an underground chamber 79 feet wide by 227 feet long and 150 feet high, along with the related access, tarbrace, leads, power tunnels and shafts, do it under cost and ahead of schedule and still have just about everybody love you. The isometric sketch of the overall project follows. I won't go into any of the details of the physical scope at this point. Instead, we'll bring out the sizes, grades, particular problems of the different areas as we cover them. First of all, let's establish that Bear Swamp was a Target Estimate - Fee with Incentives type of contract. Gates and Fox's contract was with the project's general contractor, J. A. Jones. We were one of three contractors who submitted proposals and estimates to Jones. After much negotiation and many submittals, Gates and Fox was notified we had been selected to do the underground excavation on April 12, 1971. We had our first people back on site in two days, set up a temporary office, made our first steel order for jumbo erection, pacing our jumbo construction to meet the date when J. A. Jones would have the access portal ready for us. The shops, yards, dry house, compressor building were all erected as sites were designated for our use. At last, on Thursday, June 3, we trimmed the face and moved our 9-machine Euclid jumbo up a hastily constructed haul road and started our portal preparation of the access tunnel.

Introduction Groundwater resource evaluation has historically required extensive field investigative work, usually at great cost. More recently, the advent of the microcomputer has made difficult aquifer and groundwater evaluations comparatively simple and less expensive. A groundwater model is a numeric solution to a set of equations that calculates the water level in an aquifer or other types of water bearing strata. A computer will execute the solution of the set of equations rapidly and thereby permit evaluation of large amounts of hydrogeologic data rapidly. Computer modeling of groundwater resources is very often used to forecast the effects of multiple uses of a single groundwater resource. Modeling of heavily used aquifers has proven to be beneficial for averting problems arising from competitive use of a groundwater resource. This paper describes the work tasks performed in order to evaluate a large alluvial aquifer and thereby predict the hydrologic impact of additional groundwater withdrawal. Purpose and Scope Neyer, Tiseo & Hindo, Ltd. (NTH) was retained to evaluate the groundwater supply potential of the Missouri River alluvium underlying the Fairfax District in Kansas City, Kansas (Figure 1). The proposed groundwater supply is being considered for industrial use as non-contact process water and a heat exchange medium for plant climate control. The anticipated peak groundwater demand is estimated to exceed 30 million gallons per day (MGD) during the summer months, with an average daily demand of nearly 25 MGD. The proposed groundwater supply was to be developed from 15 large-diameter production wells located at positions that would minimize potential interference.

INTRODUCTION The Laurens Street section of the Northwest Line of the Baltimore Region Rapid Transit System, located along Pennsylvania Avenue between Pitcher Street and North Avenue is situated in material which cannot be definitely categorized as soil or rock. However, in the area of residual soils in which these tunnels were constructed, considerable attention was required to determine the character of the ground so that the designers and the constructors could properly evaluate the behavior of the ground and plan their respective efforts accordingly. The Laurens Street sections structures consist of twin rock tunnels, station structure, traction power substation, vent shafts at both ends of the station, the midline vent shaft, and the twin mixed-face tunnels. This paper concentrates on the mixed-face tunnels which extend from Station 99+67.03 (O.B.) to Station 102+49.00 (O.B.) at the southern end of the section. Since the completion of the design of this project, the Laurens Street section has been renamed the Upton Station. (See Figures 1 and 2). SUBSURFACE INVESTIGATIONS At early stages, three preliminary studies were performed by the General Soils Consultant (Ref. 1, 2, & 3). The purpose of the first study was to ascertain the generalized geological and subsurface conditions which might be encountered in the region. No borings were performed for this study. Introduction Opencast surface mining requires blasthole drilling to achieve mine planning. No single method of mining is right for all conditions. Occasionally, mine planners introduce a project with little regard to drilling and blasting. These costs are usually a significant percentage of total mine overhead. One drilling and blasting method that can be used to reduce overall mine expense is inclined or angle hole drilling. But inclined-hole drilling will not cut costs unless a set of required circumstances is met. Several conditions of mine design indicate the use of angle drilling. Geotechnical problems must first be analyzed. Primary considerations are safety, fragmentation, production, and maintenance. Secondary considerations are, in some instances, reduction in amount of explosives, which lowers blasting costs; reduction of practical fragmentation beyond blasting pattern limits; and reductions in overall costs due to reduced volume of excavation. Future trends in blasthole drilling may include incorporation of drill equipment designed to allow rapid change from vertical to inclined drilling. This will allow the operator to adapt to changing hole requirements with minimal production loss. Another improvement may be the ability to chamber holes at any elevation throughout the hole depth. This will allow more charge to be placed at strategic locations to improve fragmentation. Merits of Drilling Inclined Holes Drilling is performed to create voids for explosives. It is done either to recover minerals or to excavate a volume of earth. The manner of mining or excavation can greatly affect the economics of the overall project. Many innovations and methods have been tried, but the most practical and economical is still drilling holes and using explosives to fragment the material. To break up the material, the practice has been to place charges within the mass. This is done by drilling holes of a specific diameter and depth into the material. The holes are of such magnitude as to develop sufficient energy to break or loosen this material, providing for easier removal. In general, more open or exposed faces must exist to aid material breakage when blasting. Inclined drilling can be advantageous in open-cut mining with highwall depths of at least 24 m (80 ft). A minimum of two faces are open in open-cut mining and the material can be thrown outward to cover pre-mined volume. This cuts cost by eliminating the need to remove or relocate a large portion of material. Sometimes the material is of such a mass that more energy per unit is required to loosen it than can easily be done by blasting vertically. Inclined holes allow a more uniform loading of drilled holes. The unit of energy is raised, so little or no secondary blasting is required. This usually comes about only if the main plan calls for drilling holes deeper than 24 m (80 ft). For shallow holes, spacing and burden can be made closer to allow sufficient energy to blast the toe. Based on the findings within their report to Congress, the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) announced that it had decided not to regulate mining wastes under the hazardous waste regulatory program. However, they found that some mining wastes are hazardous and may be causing environmental damage. Cyanide wastes from heap leach operations were included in this group. In evaluating the effects of cyanide use in mining one finds a significant lack of information on the fate of cyanide in soils. Cyanide attenuation and degradation of soils is important, because ground water is a major potential pathway for cyanide contamination. There is a strong potential for cyanide to be removed from solutions as it migrates through soils· by volatilization, chemical reaction, adsorption, oxidation and biological processes, but no definitive investigation has defined these mechanisms adequately to be able to predict the fate of cyanide in soils.

The Mine Safety and Health Administration has developed a program to improve the decision making process of personnel involved in mine emergency situations. The Mine Emergency Responsiveness Development Program (MERD) has been designed specifically for fires and explosions in underground mines. This program addresses the responsibilities and organizational requirements that are necessary during rescue and recovery operations of a mine emergency . Specific skills and knowledge are required to manage an organization of personnel under conditions of intense stress, such as a mine fire or explosion. As a result, the MERD program develops these skills by providing role playing emergency simulations. This role playing provides the participants with the opportunity to experience problems, explore solutions and interact with other personalities which may exist during mine emergency situations. This paper presents the standard procedures for the MERD program developed by the Ventilation Division of the Pittsburgh Health Technology Center.

The bacterial oxidation of arsenopyrite has been shown to be an efficient, economic and environmentally acceptable method for the liberation of any gold content . The mechanism of the process is not certain but is usually considered to involve direct and indirect reactions with respect to bacterial involvement. The direct reactions are those in which the bacteria attached to the mineral surface cause its dissolution, with dioxygen being the oxidant. The iron(III) produced in solution is the chemical oxidant in the so-called indirect reactions. Barrett et al 2 showed that a synthetic bio-oxidation solution (with no cells present) could dissolve up to 15% of an arsenopyrite sample, the products of the chemical oxidation being iron(II) and arsenic(III). This paper describes an extension of the investigation of the chemical process and its imp! ication for the mechanism of the bio-oxidation of arsenopyrite.

Laser Ablation-Inductively Coupled Plasma-Mass Spectrom­etry (LA-ICP-MS) has been used successfully to "fingerprint" gold in forensic investigations within Australia and abroad. By comparison of the elemental associations it has been possible to relate gold to specific mineralising events, mines, bullion samples and fabricated articles. The methodology facilitates identification of the provenance of gold thereby providing definitive scientific evidence in criminal investigations. "Gold" samples for analysis span a wide range of materials with many requiring exhaustive prior separation and treatment to present the contained gold in a chemically "unmodified" state, and in a form, suitable for LA-ICP-MS fingerprinting. The quality of the fingerprint, and hence its value in evidence, is directly related to the rigours of prior sample preparation and evaluation, to an appreciation of the history of the gold under investigation, and to the skill of the analyst.
