Restoration of a wetland which was initially disturbed at the turn­of-the-century will be undertaken to compensate for the temporary loss of wetlands associated with future mining operations. The proposed mitigation area exhibits xeric conditions as a result of past dredging and gravel mining operations which had the effect of lowering the flood plain surface and wasting the fine surface sediments. Together these mining activities resulted in complete alteration of the surface and subsurface water systems. Water which had inundated the soil profile, now flows on the basalt bedrock, surfacing only for a relatively short time during high flow periods. The conventional approach to wetland restoration in this type of area is to remove surface material in an attempt to bring the surface nearer to the underground water. These operations would require the removal and redistribution of large quantities of gravel, cobbles and boulders and the attendant destruction of existing wetland areas. Rather than lowering the surface elevation to the water level, the mitigation plan conceptualized for this project involves forcing the water to the surface by creating subsurface ponds behind four impermeable barriers. The barriers will extend vertically from the bedrock to the surface. Surface berms will be constructed along the length of each groundwater barrier to enhance sediment deposition and encourage the development of wetland vegetation. This is the least expensive and least invasive method of creating a wetland which will remain saturated to the requisite degree and for the amount of time required for classification as a wetland as defined by the 1989 Federal Manual for Identifying and Delineating Jurisdictional Wetlands.

For the mining industry in general and gold mining in particular, the past few years have been difficult. Economic conditions, coupled with growing regulatory restrictions, have led to increasingly important reasons for managing assets wisely. From a public company perspective, such asset management makes sense because it ultimately provides for an increase in shareholder wealth, and that is why we are in business. Regardless of whether a company is public or not, assets must be managed effectively to remain a player in today's competitive environment. So, as the chief executive officer of a gold mining company, how do we manage our assets to ensure that we are satisfying our obligations to our customer-the Amax Gold shareholder? The gold industry has been under siege. We have just completed the third year with average prices below $12.85/ g ($400/oz). When finding, and/or acquisition costs and development costs to operating costs are added, there isn't much of a profit margin left. What this environment provides, however, is opportunities for growth. In the gold business, you either grow or you die. Today, most North American gold producers have, at most, a 10-year mine life. We are all scrambling to add reserves so we do not become extinct. As prices remain low, opportunities abound for increasing diminishing reserves. This is the time for the opportunistic company to take advantage of market conditions and that is precisely what Amax Gold has done. In the framework of the Specific Programme: ?Promoting Competitive and Sustainable Growth? a detection system was designed and developed in order to provide an added value service beyond standard instrumentation. In the hydrocarbon industry it will be possible for the first time to detect in a pulse regime, two types of radiation emissions using a single device. This means that any saturation of hydrocarbons can be detected, irrespective of the degree of formation water mineralization, which is a major limitation on currently available neutron-gamma tools, where the formation water has a low mineralization.

Factors that have influenced mineralization in the Valley and Ridge and Piedmont provinces in Alabama are not clearly understood. Lithology and structure are recognizable factors in the Valley and Ridge province, where barite, lead, and zinc sulfides occur in structurally complex areas of Cambrian and Ordiovician carbonate rocks. Metal mineralization in the Piedmont province indicates a complex relationship with factors such as favorable host rock, proximity to intrusive or high-grade metamorphic rocks, several metamorphic events and separate or related structural events. Lineaments, as used herein, refer to naturally occurring linear features consisting of topographic, vegetative or soil tonal alignments that are at least partially continuous for distances greater than a mile (Lattman, 1958). Lineaments in Alabama were first recognized by J. G. Newton in 1970, using Apollo 9 series photographs. Subsequent studies delineated the features (Powell and others, 1970) and suggested relationships to structural and hydrologic factors. More recent work has explored relationships to mineralization, environmental geology and the tectonic framework of the Appalachians (Drahovzal and Copeland, 1970; Drahovzal and Neathery, in press). The lineaments recognizable on Apollo 9 photography probably represent fractures, some of which may reflect geofractures that bound major basement blocks. The lineaments defined in Alabama range from about 4 miles to nearly 200 miles in length. Most of the lineaments are straight, but some are arcuate; some appear to terminate at the intersections with other lineaments but most cross each other with no offset. Some lineaments pass through areas of structural disruption such as terminations, offsets and changes in structural style, but others show no such relationships. Besides the question of the stability of the roof and walls, one of the main problems encountered with tunnelling and shaft-sinking through the soft ground of alluvial origin forming the sub-grade of most large towns is settlement. Public transport and road tunnels in town centres are particularly affected, as they cannot generally be designed at any great depth for several reasons, such as the fact that ventilation shafts and access to the surface by means of stairs, escalators, lifts, ramps and so on must be fitted into the limited space available and are therefore costly, and because of the difficulties of driving below the water table. It is for this reason, coupled with the need for wide radius curves, that tunnels now so often pass close under buildings and monuments which must not be exposed to any risk of damage from subsidence during excavation. Grouting is the usual method used for consolidating soils, improving their strength and making them less compressible, but it is itself liable to cause heaving and cracks in the buildings above and has many other attendant dangers, including continually revised estimates which are the reason for the often inordinately high costs met with in urban tunnelling to-day. INTRODUCTION Geotechnical engineers play a major role in tunnel design primarily because tunnels are constructed entirely within the ground. In general, this role can be divided into two major tasks: subsurface investigations and project design. Under subsurface investigations, it is necessary for the geotechnical engineer to accurately describe the ground in which the project will be built. Under project design, it is necessary for the geotechnical engineer to work together with other members of the design team to make certain that the tunnel fulfills its intended purpose at least cost. Given in the paper are the authors' opinions about what constitutes an adequate scope of services for these two tasks on a tunneling project. SUBSURFACE INVESTIGATIONS o Background Study All subsurface exploration programs for tunnels begin with a thorough investigation of background information about the proposed site. Such background information includes geologic, reports topographic maps, aerial photography, and case history reports of other nearby tunnels. Once completed, it is necessary to study the background information so that the proper scope and magnitude of subsurface exploration work is performed in a manner that provides maximum input to a knowledge of those intact and rock mass properties that are important for an understanding of the entire ground mass. HISTORY The Surigao Nickel Refinery of Marinduque Mining and Industrial Corporation is located on Nonoc Island off the northwestern coast of Mindanao in the Philippines. Nonoc Island is part of the Surigao Mineral Reservation which had been identified as early as 1912. Initial interest in these deposits was due to their iron content, and their value as a nickel deposit was not seriously entertained until the late 1950's. The Philippine government undertook extensive test pitting and sampling programmes at that time and in the early sixties Marinduque became involved in helping to establish firmer ore reserves. Evaluations of the test pitting programme indicated reserves of 75,000,000 tonnes of ore averaging 1.22% Ni, 0.1% Co and 38.5% Fe. The Philippine government called for bids on the reservation in 1962 and Marinduque and Sherritt Gordon carried out some feasibility studies for the recovery of nickel from the deposit. However, it was not until 1968 that Marinduque was granted proper authority to exploit the Surigao deposits. Marinduque and Sherritt then entered into an agreement which allowed Marinduque to utilize a process developed by Sherritt for treating lateritic ores. During 1968, a 25 st/d pilot plant was erected in Fort Saskatchewan, Alberta for the purpose of modelling all process steps. A 10,000 tonne ore sample was sent from Nonoc as feed stock for the pilot plant.

As part of a cooperative effort between the U.S. Bureau of Mines and the Florida Institute of Phosphate Research (FIPR), with input-from the phosphate industry, the conversion of phosphor-gypsum to sulfur is being investigated. The proposed process incorporates a thermal reduction of phosphogypsum to calcium sulfide (CaS) and a hydrometallurgical treatment to convert calcium sulfide to ammonium bisulfide (NH4SH), which is then oxidized using a catalyst to produce elemental sulfur. The paper summarizes the results of continuing laboratory studies using an activated carbon catalyst which was loaded with sulfur through oxidation of ammonium bisulfide solution. The extraction of the sulfur that forms in situ on the catalyst is a key area in the development of the sulfur recovery process. Two approaches for removing the sulfur are being investigated: 1) thermal treatment to volatilize sulfur, and 2) leaching the sulfur using liquid anhydrous ammonia. The research has shown that it is technically feasible to recover over 90% of the sulfur from the carbon by either volatilization or ammonia leaching. Locked-cycle testing has demonstrated that the carbon has the potential to be recycled after ammonia leaching.

A method of hand-calculating the air-cooling requirements of a conceptualized underground mining operation is presented for the reader's orientation. Separate air heat load calculations were conducted for adiabatic compression, electromechanical equipment, wallrock, broken rock, groundwater, and blasting operations. The air heat sources were calculated for four mining levels under conditions representative of a typical planned mining operation at depth. The total heat gain on each level will approximate the level air-cooling requirements. The results of these hand calculations can be further modified by the use of mine ventilation computer software that refine the heat-source calculations, predict underground ambient air temperatures, and establish the air-cooling requirements of a mine. INTRODUCTION The principal mining method employed is a modified vertical crater retreat (VCR) blasthole operation. Typical scopes range from 20 to 40 feet wide, 75 to 100 feet long, and 100 feet in height. Six and one-half inch blastholes are drilled with an "in the hole" hammer drill. Eight-foot high horizontal rounds are blasted down. Mucking of ore from the undercut to orepass is done with LHD equipment operated from a remote control station. Backfill includes hydraulically placed tailings with cement, and waste rock when available. Stope access is from ramp sub-levels on 50-foot vertical intervals. Crosscuts are ramped down to the first stope cut 25 feet below the sub-level elevation. Then the crosscuts are raised by taking down the back when each stope cut is completed, until an elevation 25 feet above the sub-level is reached. The crosscuts are filled with tailings, and/or waste rock. See Figure 1. Typically, a two-pronged approach to defining the air-cooling requirements is conducted. First, the principal sources that make up the air heat load are individually hand-calculated. Second, projections of mine heat load are calculated by utilizing computer modeling techniques. This paper discusses the first method (hand calculations) of determining the individual components of heat flow into the mine. CALCULATED AIR HEAT LOADS Adiabatic Compression The plans for the mine include delivery of 300,000 cfm of air to ventilate the lower level operation. This is equivalent to approximately 200 cfm/ton of rock produced (300,000 cfm/1500 tpd of ore and waste). As air flows down a shaft, with no heat interchange between the shaft and air and no evaporation of moisture taking place, the air is heated in the same way as if it were compressed in a compressor. Dry air increases in temperature about 5.4°F per 1000 feet. One BTU is added to each pound of air for every 778 feet of decrease in elevation, or is subtracted for the same elevation increase. For dry air, the dry-bulb temperature change is 1/(0.24 x 778) = 0.00535°F/ft., or 1°F/187 ft. elevation. Auto-compression may be masked by the presence of other heating or cooling sources, such as shaft wallrock, groundwater, air and water lines, electrical facilities, etc. The major factors influencing the temperature of the air delivered underground by a shaft are (1) the night time cool air temperature's effect on the rock or lining of the shaft, (2) temperature gradient of ground rock related to depth, and (3) evaporation of moisture within the shaft which increases the latent temperature and decreases the sensible temperature. [Calculation For Adiabatic Heat of Compression] a. Assumptions: 1. Three hundred thousand cfm of fresh air at 3000 level has increased in temperature during the summertime to the point where it has little available cooling power. Air-cooling will be required on 3000 Level and below. 2. Elevation of 3000 Level is approximately +1000 ft. above sea level.

INTRODUCTION The United States Uranium Registry (USUR) tissue program was funded in 1978 by the United States Department of Energy (DOE) through its Human Health and Assessments Division, and registrant enrollment began in 1980. It is operated by Hanford Environmental Health Foundation (HERF), Richland, Washington, with support provided by Pacific Northwest Laboratory (PNL).** The USUR tissue program is the first systematic effort to contact and gain assistance of workers occupationally exposed to uranium and to seek and study uranium deposition in human tissue. This paper describes the program objectives, populations selected for study, procedures for enrolling workers in the program, types of tissue to be studied, and analytical procedures to be used. PROGRAM OBJECTIVES The objectives of the USUR tissue program are to: 1) Determine the distribution and concentration of uranium, if any, in the tissues of occupationally exposed workers. 2) Compare bioassay measurements of exposed individuals with the results of analyses of tissues obtained at autopsy. 3) Seek evidence of histopathologic changes related to any uranium deposition that may be present. 4) Conduct analyses of whole bodies, when available, to obtain more precise data on the uranium burdens, if any, in the body and organs, and especially the distribution in parts of the body, such as the skeleton, that are not usually accessible for sampling. 5) Develop data that will assist in evaluating a) the accuracy of current in-vivo measurement techniques, b) the propriety of existing regulations, and c) the adequacy of current protection programs. SELECTION OF POPULATIONS FOR STUDY Selection of the populations for the USUR tissue program was based on studies of the United States Uranium Registry described elsewhere (0c81). Potential populations for study were quite varied because of occupational exposure to different chemical forms of uranium, different levels and eras of exposure, varying ability to identify populations exposed in the past, and the general interest and cooperativeness of the populations. Nevertheless, certain identifiable populations emerged that were both willing to participate in the study and likely to provide useful information. Among the targeted populations are individuals who were exposed to uranium prior to the existence of modern exposure standards. These individuals are presently being enrolled by the USUR. The reliability of concentration and distribution data and the demonstration of effects are more likely in such individuals than in those who have received less exposure. However, the targeted groups also include individuals who Have been exposed to permissible levels of uranium, and reference employees in uranium plants who have not worked with uranium. The lesser exposures are of immediate interest because of the rarity of heavy exposures under current standards. The sampling of potentially exposed individuals with negative in-vivo measurement results may serve to check the adequacy of in-vivo measurements in the detection of deposition. [ENROLLMENT PROCEDURE] The enrollment of participants follows three patterns. 1) Presently employed workers are enrolled by the cooperative efforts of USUR staff with the medical, industrial relations, and/or health physics personnel of the uranium facility. Volunteers may be enrolled by medical personnel at the time of their physical examination or by health physics personnel at the time of a bioassay or lung counting procedure. Follow-up after initial contacts with currently employed uranium workers is carried out by on-site personnel, but subsequent follow-up is the responsibility of the Registry. 2) Retired workers are contacted by mail, with a covering letter from their former employer supporting the principles of the study but leaving participation in the program on an entirely voluntary basis. 3) An alternate method of enrollment is to obtain a USUR autopsy consent after death from the next of kin. As part of enrollment in the program, permission is requested for access to the individual's medical and exposure data, and a short occupational history is filled out. The autopsy permission agreement signed by the individual is for an initial period of 5 years; the USUR ordinarily seeks renewal of the agreement upon its expiration. While this agreement provides

Introduction As with many gravity concentration processes, pneumatic concen¬tration traces its origin in antiquity. The use of winnowing to separate chaff from grain has long been known, and such procedures were undoubtedly practiced in ancient civilizations for the concentration of ores and the separation of slag from metal whenever specific gravity, size, and shape differences were favorable. Taggart142 has reported on the use of dry rockers and dry panning techniques for use with gold ores in arid regions such as Western Australia. The present day air table was developed in the last century for this purpose. Devices and Processes Classification. All classifiers make a separation on the basis of size, shape, and specific gravity. In addition to specific gravity and size, particle shape factor is often particularly important to pneumatic processes, and advantage is taken of the fact that both flat and fibrous particles settle at velocities substantially lower than that of their equiv¬alent spheres. Another factor of importance in this process is the bulk density of the material since substances such as exfoliated ver¬miculite or partially opened fibrils of asbestos have bulk densities significantly lower than those of the pure in situ mineral. Winnowing takes advantage of all of these physical factors to affect a separation starting with a closely sized feed, and vermiculite has been separated from rock by this process.142 When air classifiers are used to size minerals, the separation will often not be perfect because heavy particles will respond similarly to somewhat coarser light particles while flat, elongated, and low bulk density particles will act as would particles finer than the cut size. An example of a classification process that also results in concentration is the zig-zag classifier"' used to separate paper from glass, metal bottles, and cans during the recycle of municipal solid waste. Application of this process to minerals showing the proper specific gravity, size, and shape differ¬ences is obvious. An important device of this type is an air-aspirated screen used to remove asbestos from its associated rock during the dry processing of that mineral.144 The raw ore is crushed and screened and the asbes¬tos removed by aspiration from the surface of the screen by virtue of its shape and low bulk density. Hindered Settling. Based on the discussion in the section on "Hindered Settling Concentration and Jigging," the use of air devices could be anticipated in desert areas or where moisture may be deleteri¬ous to the product to be separated. Such processes have three major defects: (1) dust may be difficult to contain, (2) fines are difficult to process, and (3) the process is inherently less efficient than are wet processes as may be seen from Eqs. 3 and 4 in the section on "Hindered Settling Concentration and Jigging p. 4-47." Taggart142 has reported on the use of both dry panning and a dry rocker for gold separation in and regions. The dry panning makes use of winnowing, defection on the basis of specific gravity and shape during fall, and hindered settling. Prescreened placer material is poured from one pan to another as air blows across the falling stream. The process is repeated many times with hand picking to produce a rough concentrate. Magnetic minerals are then removed, and the residue, one grain deep in the pan, is air blown. In dry rocking the gravel is sized on a steeply inclined screen with the undersize fed to a riffle box with a porous bottom which is blown from underneath."' This device was the forerunner of the present-day air table. Air Tables and Jigs.145. 146 At least nine types of these devices have been developed, all but two of them for coal. While the devices used for coal may be characterized as pneumatic jigs, pneumatic tables, and pneumatic landers,145 only pneumatic jigs survive today. The same is true for ores.'" In these devices presized particles are fed to the separator which consists of an inclined vibrating conveyor with a porous surface through which air is carefully introduced to form a fluid bed. The lighter particles are lifted by the air out of uphill conveyance and float downhill, while the heavier particles in contact with the surface are conveyed uphill by the vibrator. Typically both transverse and longitudinal slopes are used. A plan view of a Triple S air table and the type of separation made is shown in Fig. 44.147 Because of its external appearance, the device has been called an air table, although it functions essentially as a jig. However, some of the asymetrical acceleration conveying function of a standard shak¬ing table is also performed by the eccentric vibrator incorporated into this device. Low pressure air is admitted below the vibrating table surface consisting of cloth (e.g., canvas), porous plastic, woven wire, or punched metal supported on a wire mesh or grid. As with a shaking table, the device produces a concentrate, middlings, and tailings. The middlings are recycled or are subsequently treated on another concentrating device. As with many wet separations, presizing by screening is necessary. The oft-repeated admonition of Professor Richards, "Separation without classification is damnation," is cer¬tainly true here. In this way a small heavy particle which might weigh the same as a large light particle and thus report to the same place on the air table has already been removed in the sizing step. Air tables are almost universally encased with a canopy to remove dust by aspiration. Some concentration may also be achieved in this step when favorable specific gravity, size, and shape differences are present. Applications Ore Separations. Air tables were originally developed for ore separations, and they find application in and regions or where water is deleterious or inconvenient to use or remove (e.g., small tonnage materials already dried). They have been used for asbestos, bauxite, calcite, cassiterite, columbite-tentalite, diatomaceous earth, fluorite, gilsonite, graphite, kyanite, manganese minerals, mica, managite, perlite, pyrite, pyrrhotite, vermiculite, and uraninite ores. More recently, air tables have found favor in separating a wide variety of secondary materials such as abrasive grains, bone char, catalysts, fiberglass, scrap glass, scrap wire from its insulation, prills from slag, dross and coke from metal or from each other, metal from crushed crucibles, lead from plastic in old batteries, and cubic particles from flat ones. The devices also finds considerable application in the preparation of food¬stuffs. Placer Dome Canada owns and operates the Campbell Mine at Balmertown, in the Northwestern corner of the Province of Ontario, Canada. The mine operates at 1500 stpd and produces in excess of 300,000 oz of gold annually. Recent changes to the gravity concentration circuit have resulted in a 10-15 % increase in gravity recovery. The circuit changes responsible for these improvements will be the focus of this paper.

Kerr-McGee Coal Corporation has used diesel face haulage and support equipment at its dual-seam Galatia Mine in Southern Illinois since production activities commenced in 1983. The mine began production from its lower seam, the Harrisburg No. 5 coal seam, in October 1983 and from the upper Herrin No.6 coal seam in April 1985. Before production began, the company developed a program designed to make use of the flexibility offered by diesel equipment. While productivity was an important goal, the top priority of the program was to provide a safe and healthy work environment for the miners. Management believed that high productivity would naturally follow. History has proven this belief to be true.

Differential settlement on reclaimed land presents a particular problem when the land is to be used for row crops. The poorly drained depressions caused by differential settlement restrict crop yield resulting in additional costs to alleviate the problem. Potentially more serious is the threat of failing to meet target yields due to settlement: related reductions. Because the mechanism by which the problem occurs is not well understood, a physical model study was conducted to investigate the importance of several factors. Although the importance of such factors as the relative amounts of rock and unconsolidated overburden in the undisturbed condition and the size distribution of rock fragments were considered, the analysis concentrated on the causes of settlement in the reconstructed soil layer above the rock spoil.

The design of mine fire emergency plans requires that the contamination of mines by fumes, and the mutual interaction of fires and ventilation systems be pre-calculated. Several computer models were developed by the Bureau of Mines for this purpose during the last decade. The models advanced in sophistication from the transient-state simulation of fume concentrations for the early stages of a fire to the steady-state simulation of airflow rates, concentrations, and temperatures for fully developed fires, and finally to the complete transient-state simulation of fires and ventilation systems. The principal features of these models are described.

Every time a tycoon in the producing industry pontificates on the economic history of copper, or prophesies its future, he is likely to praise the virtues of "stabilization". Consumers of copper constantly bemoan fluctuations in the supply and price of the metal. Governments in some producing countries, to a greater or lesser degree dependent upon exports of copper for foreign exchange and upon taxation of copper profits for substantial parts of their budgets, are perhaps more eager than any other group for "stabilization".

A prime objective of physical coal cleaning is the separation of raw coal into a clean coal product with the required low ash and pyritic sulfur content and a high ash refuse. The refuse should also contain a minimum amount of combustible matter. In order to be effective, cleaning processes require that the mineral matter in the feed, including pyrite, be largely discrete and free particles, liberated so that the particles are not attached or embedded in coal. Liberation of mineral matter from coal, particularly pyrite, was investigated by Bechtel as part of two fine coal cleaning research programs sponsored by the Department Of Energy (DOE), Pittsburgh Energy Technology Center (PETC). Two proof-of-concept (POC) plants, each with a capacity of 900 kg per hour, were installed and tested to evaluate production of ultra-clean coal using microbubble flotation and spherical agglomeration technologies. The plants were designed to produce clean coal with 2 percent ash and pyrite content lower than that achievable by conventional methods. Also, the quality targets were to be attained at energy recoveries above 80 percent. Bench-scale flotation and agglomeration tests indicated that it would be practical to grind the 6 mm top size feed coal to a mean particle size (050) of 10 micrometers in the POC test plant. In this part of the paper, the steps taken in the grinding circuit to maximize liberation of mineral matter are described.

This is due to concurrent trends in public behavior, including a rise in public interest in these projects that is not matched by a rise in science literacy, and increasing organization and participation of the public through social media, citizen science, and grassroots initiatives. In recent years, several high-profile incidents have demonstrated that when public concern is ignored or met with a passive response from industry, it can rapidly grow into organized opposition that negatively impacts or wholly derails a project. Engaging, listening to, and educating stakeholders during early planning and development phases are therefore essential to earning credibility and trust. Moreover, maintaining two-way lines of communication throughout the lifespan of a project demonstrates social responsibility and facilitates cooperation, acceptance, and even support from communities and others. Positive experiences with specific projects at a local, community level can influence the larger public opinion of an entire industry sector. This paper presents cases studies of public engagement related to shale gas development (including hydraulic fracturing and pipeline construction), mountaintop removal mining, and management of mixed-use watersheds near surface mining operations. The experiences highlighted in these case studies are used to draw best practices of public engagement for sustainable energy development.Introduction Within the scientific research community, the importance of public engagement has gained increasing recognition. In a 2007 article in Nature, medical researcher, Patrick Taylor, stated that public engagement has both “gone viral” and “gone global” and has the ability to make real impacts to research (Taylor 2007). Nancy Baron, the science outreach director for COMPASS, an organization providing communications training for scientists, provides further evidence for the increasing focus on engagement, including shifting attitudes observed during her own experience as a communications coach and documented in surveys, the recent inclusion of communication and engagement activities in academic tenure review, and the surge of workshops, materials, and other resources available on the subject (Baron 2016). In addition to COMPASS, a number of organizations and institutes have been developed to train scientists for communication and engagement with the public, perhaps most notably the Alan Alda Center for Communicating Science at Stony Brook University, and academic fellowship programs, such as the Leopold Leadership Program at Stanford University and the Wilburforce Fellowship Program, have been established for the same purpose."

It has been demonstrated for two totally different silver bearing and cyanide refactory concentrates that the formation of silver jarosite can be prevented through the addition of iodide to the autoclave feed. A molar ratio of r/ Ag+ of no more than 1 was sufficient to raise silver extractions in a subsequent cyanide leach from 4% after autoclaving without iodide addition to 98% for the sulpho-salt concentrate and from 15% to 97% for the pyritic acanthite concentrate. Flowsheet proposals will be discussed to prevent loss of the iodide additive. The use of chloride instead of iodide will also be reviewed.
