This paper will discuss the application of a continuous miner using a fixed drum milling type cutting head for the underground mining of hard rock and salt ores. Continuous mining machines of the ripper chain cutting head, oscillating milling cutting head and boring arm designs have been used in rock and salt applications with various degrees of success. The large boring arm miners have been successful in potash, trona and salt, but they have not been successful in mining rock materials like iron ore. The main method used in underground mining rock materials is the conventional drilling and blasting the ore from the solid. This is particularly true for the harder, more abrasive copper and iron bearing ores. The softer salt based ores of potash, trona and rock salt can use several underground mining methods depending on seam conditions. Several of these methods use underground coal mining equipment that has been extensively redesigned to adapt it for use in mining noncoal materials. Conventional mining methods employ the use of a universal cutting machine to undercut or topcut the ore body before face drilling and blasting takes place to produce a smooth parting of the ore. The boring arm continuous miner is widely used in underground mining of potash and trona ores. It produces a tunnel with a smooth semicircular contour which results in good rib and roof stability. The ripper chain continuous miner is also widely used in mining the salt based ores of potash, trona and rock salt. They are used more frequently in Europe than in the United States and Canada. Before you begin mining aggregates in Oklahoma, you must first look at the market and ask these questions: (1) Is there a need for additional aggregate production? (2) Can we produce the aggregate efficiently enough to compete? (3) Is the deposit close enough to the market? If you can answer "yes" to each of these three questions, then you are ready to start the process for mining aggregates in Oklahoma. The first consideration to be made is whether the aggregates produced will need to meet state specifications. If you do not want to meet state durability standards, there are numerous formations you can mine and produce aggregates. We will deal only with the formations that will meet state durability standards. These formations are located in the southern half of Oklahoma and in the Tulsa area. Some of the formations that contain limestone, dolomite, and sandstone that will meet state durability tests are West Springs Creek, Kindblade, McKenzie Hill, Butterly-Royer, and Rush Springs Formations. Granite and rhyolite also are found in Oklahoma and can be used as construction aggregates. Once an area has been identified as having durable material, and drilling has verified its properties, a permit must be secured from the Oklahoma Department of Mines, Oklahoma Department of Environmental Quality, and any other applicable agency before construction of a plant occurs. There are many different brands of crushers available, but all work on one of two crushing principles-either compression breakage or impact breakage. Each type has its application in different industrial-mineral types and the desired end product. A typical small crushing plant would start with a jaw crusher for primary reduction, and then employ one standard cone and one shorthead cone for secondary reduction. One grizzly would be in the circuit with one finished-product screen and three to four finished-product stackers. Natural sands and gravels are found in rivers and old river channels. These too need to be tested to see if spec product can be produced. All of our sand operations have very little gravel; thus, we do not process the gravel. The sand is processed through classifying tanks for gradation.

In this paper, a number of novel hypotheses that provide a fresh perspective on the characterization of strata movements associated with longwall mining are developed by analyzing subsidence measurements with an influence-function-based computer program. Using an inverse application of the traditional influence-function technique, easily obtained surface displacements are used to analyze some of the complicated, expensive, and difficult-to- measure movements of the intermediate roof strata in a longwall panel. The primary hypothesis developed by this analysis proposes the existence of an area of partial roof caving near the edge of a panel called the "edge effect." A secondary hypothesis, interrelated with the first, promotes the importance of the effect of gate-entry closure on the observed strata movements. Both the primary edge-effect hypothesis and the secondary hypothesis concerning gate-entry closure are justified and quantified in an extensive analysis of surface subsidence that uses supporting information from related theories, design criteria, and in situ measurements. Next, the edge effect and the gate closure hypotheses are extended further and used to provide an explanation of the complex subsidence interaction of adjacent longwall panels in what is termed a "redisturbed" effect. Finally, the importance of accurately understanding these longwall strata movements for proper subsidence prediction or gate design is stressed.

The movement of radon away from its source in porous media is determined by two key parameters: the fraction of the total radon formed which enters the intergranular pore spaces, termed the emanation coefficient, and the transport processes which exist in these pores such as diffusion and convection. The first parameter, the emanation coefficient, is of primary importance since it is a measure of the actual amount of radon which is free to migrate within the media. The effects of particle size and radium concentration on the emanation coefficient were examined using a quartz-pebble conglomerate ore from the Elliot Lake mining district of Ontario. It was found that the smallest particle size examined (<74 µm) had the highest radium concentration and contributed the most to the radon emanation. A one-to-one correspondence between radium concentrations for the various particle size fractions and radon emanation was not observed. Samples were examined using scanning electron microscopy and very small particulates were observed to be present on the particle surfaces. When these very small particulates were removed from the host particle surfaces by rinsing, the radon emanation decreased by a factor of 17. This result indicates that most of the emanation comes from the very small particles. The effect of moisture on the emanation coefficient was examined qualitatively and a trend of increased radon release with moisture content was noted.

1. INTRODUCTION Roadheaders have a shadowy origin - probably in Eastern Europe - but were introduced to Europe and the West by the importation of a Russian PK3 machine by the National Coal Board in 1961. A number of features rendered this type of machine an attractive tool for coal mine operators: its flexibility of operation, its combined cutting and loading ability, the opportunity it provided of making any shape of roadway, as well as its ability to cut some rocks. Encouraged and sponsored by the National Coal Board, the development of roadheaders was taken up in Great Britain, notably by Anderson Strathclyde and Dosco; in Europe, predominantly in numerical terms by Voest Alpine and Paurat. Over the 24 years since the importation of the first PK3, evolutionary development has taken place to the extent that machines are now available in many forms up to 120 tons in weight. Machine design has altered, partly as a result of increased power requirements and partly in line with the use of a ripping or a co-axial head. However, the basic concept remains: a boom containing a motor and transmission gear, with a driven cutting head at its extremity and capable of universal movement urged by hydraulic rams mounted on the boom turret and on the machine deck. Generally, the turret, hydraulic powerpack and all other necessary equipment are mounted on a chassis, which contains a discharge conveyor, the whole being carried on caterpillar tracks so that a complete machine entity is provided. The key to productive computer usage is system software integration with full compatibility among individual components. The majority of software developers in our industry are still in the process of perfecting individual components. As a result, exchange and validation of data between disciplines becomes an arduous process. We at Morrison Knudsen Engineers, Inc. (MKE) have integrated an entire system, allowing exploration, geology, modeling, mine planning, and operation modules to work as a single, complete system with direct exchange and validation of data. The importance of integration to both developers and users of today&apos;s mining soft- ware is becoming increasingly apparent as we, an industry, move toward growth and enhancement of the technology of ore reserve acquisition, evaluation, and management. It is also important to understand the present state of integration and where it is leading US. Not long ago, another industry passed through the same stages we are now setting up for the mining industry. The stereo industry began with a few individual components, the record player, tape recorder, and radio. People were able to play records, listen to the radio and record conversations and music only through microphones on their tape recorders. Soon, one enterprising individual discovered he could tape sound directly from the radio or record player by capturing audio output from the speaker wires. Interfaces and patch cords were developed, providing a means to transfer audio information between components with not only little loss of sound quality, but also the elimination of back- ground noise. The industry took another step forward with the introduction of "integrated" stereo, where the components were packaged in one cabinet with shared resources. This reduced overall cost which paved the way for better quality. Today&apos;s stereos are now so well integrated that many of the components share data and resources from the same manufacturer, designed to work together for almost perfect data transfer between any of the components. The result is better sound, convenience, and reduced cost. This is the ultimate goal for integration. Any system development passes through these same steps on the road to total interaction. Initially, the components are designed, tested, and marketed individually, often by separate companies. As the users become familiar with the components, the need arises for an automatic interface between the components. This is necessary to cut down on error during data transfer and to eliminate the redundant work required to enter results from one component into the next component in the system. As a result, interfaces must then be developed to aid in this data transfer. After data transfer is accomplished, the next step is resource sharing. Resource sharing is careful design and engineering by either cooperative, individual manufacturers or one firm taking on the task to produce a single package product. Design and resource sharing leads to lower overall cost, while still providing component capability with options to grow as the user grows. The mining software industry has been working to develop some very high quality component software and has indeed accomplished this task in every aspect of the mining industry. However, realizing the importance of integration, some companies with limited individual resources have started working together to interface their individual components. Other firms have undertaken the project of developing complete, integrated systems.

Mineral processing plants are monitored and controlled using measurements that are usually processed by on-line material balance calculation techniques. However, gross errors, due to sensor biases or failures, may corrupt all the process variable estimates. On-line gross error detection methods are required to ensure efficient mass balance evaluation. In the proposed approach, material imbalances and raw measurement corrections are tested by statistical techniques designed to detect and isolate sensor problems.

Deep tillage is widely used as a means of alleviating excessive soil compaction. There has been some concern that the voids created by deep tillage may collapse before a more natural soil structure develops, resulting in recompaction subsequent to deep tillage A laboratory investigation was conducted to determine the feasibility of pneumatically injecting organic material into the voids produced during deep tillage in order to prevent any significant recompaction from occurring. Various amendments were injected into the soil during laboratory tests using a small-scale ripping and injection system. Measurements were made of selected soil proper Pies to evaluate the feasibility of this method.

This paper quantifies the detrimental effects of pyrite and stibnite on gold leaching kinetics. Means to reduce the effect of these minerals by addition of lead nitrate and oxygen are presented. A significant retarding effect was observed when the pyrite concentration was 20%. A pretreatment with lead nitrate reduced the extent of gold surface coating by Ag, Fe and S. Stibnite, at a concentration as low as 20 ppm, significantly affected the gold leaching kinetics through forming a passivating film of Sb(V) oxide possibly Sb2O5. The most practical way to alleviate the effect of stibnite is to leach the materials at a moderate pH with addition of lead nitrate. A low temperature reduced the efficiency of lead nitrate to counteract the effect of stibnite. The increase of dissolved oxygen is not favourable to alleviate the coating of stibnite on gold.

Mechanical mining is steadily gaining in usage in the mining industry. A variety of machines are now being used, including tunnel boring machines, roadheaders, continuous miners, surface miners and augers. These machines have advantages compared to drill-and-blast mining methods, including increased safety, lower cost, uniform muck size and accurately sized openings. A century of experience with mechanical methods has paid dividends to the coal industry. Current trends guarantee eventual development of true general-purpose hard-rock mechanical mining machines. When several significant challenges have been met, mechanical miners will become integrated mining systems and will determine the design of mines.

GOLD AND SILVER Cyanidation According to Mellor (1923) the alchemists of the eighteenth century knew that gold was soluble in aqueous solution of potassium cyanide, and the early jewelers probably utilized this fact in gilding. He also mentions that Scheele in 1783 and later Bagration in 1843 noted the solvent action of aqueous solutions of alkali cyanides on gold. Yet it was not until 1887 that the value of this observation was recognized, when MacArthur and Forrest (1887) made use of it in leaching gold from its ores. Since then, the process has spread to every gold and silver mining district in the world.

In December 1988 Phelps dodge corporation brought an underground gold mine into production in the republic of Botswana. The mineralization is associated with steeply dipping shear zones in Archean greenstones of the Tati Schist Belt. The gold is intimately associated with sulfides and is refractory in nature. The deposit is being exploited by underhand open stoping methods. Vertical and inclined shafts are used to hoist the ore to surface where it is treated by conventional crushing, milling and flotation, followed by fluid bed roasting with CIP elution and carbon regeneration. Adjacent deposits are being explored with a view to increasing production. Legal and taxation aspects of operating in Botswana are discussed.

A numerical procedure to model flow networks using a node-based approach is discussed, and the analysis encompasses both steady-state and transient solutions. An intelligent supervisor developed using expert system tools and applied to a crushing plant is presented in this paper. The structure of this supervisor, based on a model of a human operator, consists of a Knowledge base containing a qualitative model of the process, and a Rules base with the heuristic logic used by an operator when supervising a plant. The simulation results obtained show the potential of this type of systems to supervise the automatic operation of a plant.
