INTRODUCTION Spokane Mining Research Center (BuMines) is researching sealants for underground coal mines to: 1. Reduce sloughing of shale roofs. 2. Reduce sloughing of coal ribs. 3. Seal block stoppings against air losses. 4. Construct stoppings by spraying over jute cloth or metal lath. 5. Render incombustible in-place polyurethane foam. Originally the work was directed towards reducing sloughing of shale roofs. Many underground coal mines have shale directly over the coal which weathers severely after exposure to the mine atmosphere. Lab investigations(l, 2, 3, 4) have shown that many shales separate into layers when immersed in water or stored in a high relative humidity environment. Upon drying or after removal from high humidity, the shales continue to separate. Underground coal mines become wet in the warmer months from condensation of the ventilating air. Conversely, the mines become dry in the cooler months from evaporation. The mines experience severe shale break-up during the summer and much less break-up during the winter. Figs. 1, 2 and 3 show weathered shale roofs. in underground coal mines. Fig. 4 shows fallen shale on the entry floor. Sealing the shale reduces this sloughing problem.

In most industries it is normal commercial policy to try to gear production to the market. In times of scarcity output is pushed to its maximum and in times of glut output is reduced. Because of the effects of supply and demand, these times correspond to times of high and low prices respectively so the policy results in maximising long run total profits. Stockpiling is often an integral part of the policy. Stocks are accumulated during depressed market conditions and sold off when demand revives. This further increases the long run total profits. However, such policies cause violent fluctuations in short term profitability and impose severe financial strains. Indeed planning and implementing the policies are a central management concern which is often critical to the success of the industry. The mining industry is no exception and, for many raw materials, trying to balance supply with demand is an international problem. Stockpiling and restricted production agreements are common elements of policy. But very little attention has been paid to the one additional control which is unique to the mining industry, namely, the cut off grade. This neglect is apparent at all levels from individual mines to national economies.

Introduction The Kaiser Resources Ltd. hydraulic coal mine is located in south eastern British Columbia, Canada, at the western end of the Crowsnest Pass, next to the Town of Sparwood. The seam presently being mined is the number 10, known locally as the Balmer seam, which is a high quality coking coal, 50 feet in thickness and of an average inclination of 35 degrees. The mine was designed in the late sixties as a small scale trial unit, and was to use a single monitor unit, working 3 shifts per day on a 5 day per week basis. Experience has proved the method to be so successful as to warrant the expansion of the ancilliary facilities to cater for the increased production. The annual raw coal production from this single monitor unit has risen from 108,988 short tons in 1970 to 942,334 short tons in 1975, with a total mine labour force of about 160 men including the surface de-watering plant, mine supervision and mine administration.

Beginning in late 1985 and continuing through 1987, US Bureau of Mines personnel investigated longwall chain pillar and entry design in two and three-entry gateroad systems at a deep underground coal mine in central Utah. To evaluate their respective stability characteristics, four chain pillars and two longwall panels within the two separate entry systems were instrumented with Bureau hydraulic borehole pressure cells to continuously monitor vertical and horizontal pillar and panel stresses through adjacent panel retreat. In addition, supplemental entry closure information was obtained from sites located in the vicinity of the instrumented pillars. The findings presented in this report demonstrate the practicality of evaluating mine pillar stability using in situ methods and support three significant conclusions regarding ground control aspects of the investigated two-entry system: (1) Total areal entry loading was considerably less for the two-entry system, as opposed to the three-entry system, (2) a smaller percentage of opened ground in the two-entry system contributed to a marked reduction in rooffalls, and (3) lower areal loading in the two-entry system suggests improved ground conditions when mining the underlying seam.

Anionic conditioning of phosphate ores prior to fatty acid flotation is a critical step that determines the selectivity, recovers and, hence, the economics of the process. However, the chemical mechanisms operating during this conditioning step are not very well established. In this work, a comprehensive surrey of plant practice was conducted. Then, adsorption on flotation feed and francolite were studied under simulated plant conditions. Different adsorption mechanisms were found to be dominant under laboratory and plant conditions. In plant water, there was sonic physisorption of oleic acid on phosphate flotation feed and francolite, in addition to chemisorption. However, in distilled water under laboratory conditions, only chemisorption was detected. Fuel oil reduces the residual oleic acid in solution after adsorption, which explains the beneficial role of extender in phosphate flotation. The dissolved species in solution arising from the flotation feed or plant processing water are shown to clearly play a major role in determining the adsorption of oleic- acid on the substrates. The study also specifically demonstrates that, for the results to be used commercially, it is important to conduct the tests under plant mixing conditions and with the same plant water chemistry.

In order to investigate the design parameters of a future longwall in a thick coal seam a numerical model of gas emission from the goaf area was developed. A Longwall goaf was modelled as a collection of different size coal blocks. For each coal block the partial differential equation of gas flow was independently solved. In developing the flow equations, both pressure-driven and diffusion driven gas flow regimes were considered. The total gas emission rate was calculated by integrating the gas release from each individual coal block over the whole goaf area. The main output of the computer program are gas flowrate from goaf and residual content of caved coal in the goaf as a function of distance from the face. The model was applied to a longwall face driven in a thick seam where large volumes of coal in the roof were to be left behind the face. The gas contained in the coal was mainly CO, with a high desorption rate. Simulations were under- taken to quantify the effect of size of the caved coal on the flowrate from the goaf. The flow properties of coal, such as diffusivity, permeability and coal swelling due to gas adsorption, were directly measured on coal samples from the seam.

In mid-1975, the United States Borax & Chemical Corp., a member of the RTZ group, engaged Computing Associates, Inc. (CAI) in a continuing project to model their operating property at Boron, CA, with the goal of computerized assistance in medium- and long-range open-pit mine planning. Their property, 161 km (100 miles) northeast of Los Angeles, is the largest producer of borate minerals in the world. Because of unusual geological complexity, this unique deposit presents interesting problems in computer modeling, compared with the coal, uranium, and other metallic deposits with which CAI ordinary deals. Mine planning for Boron has historically been based on manually plotted contour plan maps and cross sections, with geological reserves derived from manual triangularization of the drilling pattern. Standardization and reproducibility of log interpretation, contouring, and reserve calculation were principal goals of using the computer. Additionally, it was desired to shorten both the time and cost of a planning cycle, while at least equalling the accuracy of the manual planning. The present recovery plant processes only water-soluble borates; at some time in the future it will be necessary to recover acid-soluble borate minerals as well. With computer assistance the economics of this changeover point can be more thoroughly evaluated.

The driving force behind most advances in technology is need. In the early 1980s, underground coal miners in the USA wanted to build longer conveyors to handle larger capacities but continue to use fabric reinforced belting with mechanical fasteners. Conveyors with intermediate drives were certainly the answer but achieving reliable designs required a significant learning curve. Basic design methodologies had to evolve including advanced simulation of starting and stopping along with complex control techniques and logic. Some components also evolved as specific performance requirements changed Today, in addition to underground mining, the technology has been used extensively in the tunneling industry where the need is for control of belt tensions to negotiate tight horizontal curves. Even though intermediate drives are not used extensively on the surface yet, the lessons learned will find their way to long overland surface conveyance where smaller components are more available and reliable, and often with less capital cost. This paper will document the evolution of intermediate drive technology over the last 30 years and will show examples of its current use.

This paper presents a case study which applies risk assessment techniques in evaluating potential environmental problems associated with past waste disposal practices at a 65 acre non-ferrous metals and metal alloys manufacturing facility. Waste management activities at the site involved a number of surface impoundments for gangue material, neutralized acid rinse waters, acid rinse sludges, demolition debris, storm water runoff, stockpiled ores, and a permitted residual waste landfill. As a result of these activities, the She contained 9 identifiable waste management areas impacted by over 35 potentially hazardous chemicals and metals. Extensive environmental data obtained from investigations at the Site revealed heavy metal and volatile organic chemical contamination in various environmental media. These data were utilized to evaluate potential risks to human health and the environment. The human health risk assessment estimated potential health risks to workers, residents, and Site trespassers under current and expected future uses of the Site. Areas of the Site were identified which were considered to present potential health concerns under the various exposure scenarios. Results from the human health risk assessment were utilized to develop cost effective risk based soil remediation goals protective of the public health and environment.

This paper presents detailed information on the genesis, formation, and industrial utilization of Yaylacik magnesites. Tectonically, the study area is located within the Tavsanli Zone, immediately south of the Izmir-Ankara suture in western Turkey. The geologic setting mainly comprises ophiolitic melangks basics, and ultrabasics associated with very rich magnesite deposits and lacustrine sediments. The ophiolitic unit tectonically overlies the schists and carbonate rocks. The presence of glaucophane and lawsonite indicates a low-temperature/high-pressure metamorphism. The ultra- basic rocks, which exhibit cumulate composition, have been mostly serpentinised and represent the oceanic floor of the Yaylacik ophiolite. Basic intrusives consist of dolerite and diabase, and they show the characteristics of within-plate dolerites. The magnesite occurrences are commonly observed in block, stockwork, lens, and vein forms and were deposited within the serpentinites. In most magnesite samples, secondary quartz/chalcedony formations are observed as fracture fillings due to the highly effective tectonic movements. Field surveys and microscope studies reveal that magnesites had been formed by the metasomatic alteration of serpentinites. Chemical analyses show that, although MgO content of the magnesites varies from 43.41% to 50.48%, Fe203 and CaO are lower than 1%. Silica contents are as high as 5.52% in a few samples. Although Yaylacik magnesites are not suitable for making basic refractory bricks, they are widely used as caustic-calcined magnesite in a variety of applications, including animal food, artificial fertilizer, chemical (acid neutralizer), medical and pharmaceutical, and water treatment.

Emissions of particulates, unburned hydrocarbons, nitrogen oxides (NO[ ]) and carbon monoxide (CO) from diesel engines are of concern in mines, particularly underground mines. All these undesirable products except NOx are the result of incomplete combustion in the cylinders. Various approaches to achieving more complete combustion in diesel engines have included different fuel compositions, use of catalysts, fuel additives, engine modifications, and oxygen-enriched intake air. The present study shows that injecting minute quantities of primarily platinum group metal catalysts into the intake air of a Deutz/MWM D916-6 mine diesel engine substantially reduces emissions in the exhaust. The catalyst injection system, which was developed by National Fuelsaver Corporation (Robin. 1981), transfers catalyst compounds in solution to a stream of air bubbles by a process called Bubble Fractionation (Lemlich et al.. 1966, 1968. 1970). The amounts are so minute that concentrations in the engine exhaust should be well below OSHA/NIOSH Time Weighted Average (TWA) exposure limits at steady state, a fact that was confirmed by analysis of collected particulates in the exhaust. When the catalyst injection was used along with a pleated paper filter to remove exhaust particulates, the filter operating life was shortened greatly. Therefore, this system is not recommended for use on diesel engines equipped with a water scrubber and a filter. It does offer a practical and relatively economical way of reducing exhaust emissions from other diesel engines, such as those in outby mine service

The xanthate adsorption mechanism on pyrite was investigated with an emphasis on solubility studies. Additionally, adsorption studies, Eh and infrared spectrophotometer measurements were performed. Pyrite floats at pH levels between 3 and 6 using ethyl and amyl xanthates with a maximum at pH 4. The solubility of pyrite in the absence and presence of xanthate was investigated in detail with respect to pH and conditioning time. Experimental results showed that the solubility of pyrite increases from 60 to 120 ppm (10-3 to 2x10-3 mol/ L) in the presence of xanthate at pH 3. Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectra of ferric xanthate, dixanthogen and pyrite conditioned with xanthate indicated that dixanthogen is the only species that can be determined on the pyrite surface. Adsorption tests showed that the highest level of xanthate adsorption was in the acidic range; yet higher adsorption densities were detected in neutral solutions compared to alkaline conditions. Electrochemical data suggest that the doubling of the iron concentration is due to the reduction of ferric ion to ferrous by xanthate while xanthate is oxidized to dixanthogen. Dixanthogen formation together with the hydrophobic iron hydroxy-xanthate complex on the surface is proposed to be responsible for pyrite flotation. Mechanized mining in the underground coal industry has continued to evolve since the introduction of the remote control mining machine. Remote control continuous mining machines without an onboard operator’s compartment are now the norm in the industry. Extended cuts in excess of 30 ft (9.1 m) are commonplace. Unfortunately, machine operator positioning has become an often unrecognized safety concern, particularly when remote control continuous mining machines excavate a turn (turn a crosscut). From January 2001 through July 2004, remote control continuous mining machine operators or helpers have been involved in ten roof fall fatalities and eight machinery crushing fatalities. The machinery crushing incidents occurred when machines were being repositioned or moved to another place. Of the ten roof fall fatalities, three occurred while a crosscut was being turned and a fourth fatality occurred while mining was being conducted adjacent to the crosscut. The operating time associated with turning crosscuts is a relatively small part of the mining cycle. In recent years, however, a disproportionate number of fatal incidents appear to have been associated with this activity. Procedures for reducing the incidence of operator fatalities while turning crosscuts are discussed. These techniques include: minimizing the number of turn cuts, limiting turn cut depth, establishing no work zones and using visual warning devices to designate them, installing more roof/rib support in the vicinity of the turn cut, using notch cuts prior to initiating a full turn cut, and positioning the remote control miner operator in nontraditional locations.

Division II at Kamoto mine in Kolwezi, Zaire represents a transition zone between Divisions I and III where transverse and longitudinal cut-and-fill rooms were being mined. Because this transition zone had been geologically depicted as being badly faulted the mining in this division had been deferred to a future time. However, to increase production and to reduce mining costs by carrying out the mining of the 3 divisions simultaneously, it was decided to mine Division II. The mining research group of Gecamines was given the task of designing a mining geometry then testing this design in a full scale test. Based on an evaluation of the faulting and fracturing of the 2 parallel orebodies and on an extensive in situ testing program preliminary mathematical analyses were used to develop and evaluate room and pillar designs in the 35°-65° dipping bedded formations. Based on these analyses and the constraints of having to fit the design of Division II to grade into Divisions I and III in a logical manner, a mining geometry for Division II evolved. To test this design an instrumented room was excavated in the most critical area. The results of this full scale testing showed that the behavior of the roof and wall rocks were as had been predicted by finite element computer model studies which incorporated the material properties and results of the field testing. The room geometry design was both judged and observed to be stable, hence mining commenced.

Efficient transport of bulk materials by belt conveyor systems is an important engineering design issue, especially as conveyors become longer and power requirements increase. It is well known within the industry that the parasitic energy loss of a belt conveyor, due to the indentation of the idlers into the belt backing material can be upwards of half the total energy required to drive it on a horizontal flight. Other loss sources includes the rolling resistance of the idlers, belt/roller misalignments, material trampling, frictional and acceleration losses on loading, etc., but energy absorbed by indentation of the belt backing as it passes over each successive idler is the dominant power consuming factor. INDENTATION LOSS MODELS Models to predict the rolling resistance of a cylinder (idler) on a viscoelastic foundation (backing material) have been available for some time. As a contact problem, it is nonlinear (contact length or indentation depth is a dependent on the load and vice versa) in load/deformation response. Rubber backing material is generally assumed to behave as a linear viscoelastic solid, even though it is known that most rubber compounds retain linearity only at very low strains. Because completely general solutions are impossible, practical solutions require simplifying assumptions. Those assumptions relate naturally to two separate pans of any analytical model: I. The deformation model-aspects of the problem relating to the geometry, boundary conditions and kinematics of how the material deforms. 2. The material model-aspects of the problem relating to the material properties, or constitutive relationships, i.e., the stress/strain relationships.

INTRODUCTION The following papers describe the extraction of nickel in the form of ferronickel from the Dominican laterites. The Falconbridge process was developed initially in the Falconbridge Metallurgical Laboratories and subsequently in several successive stages of pilot plant operation in the Dominican Republic. In the course of this work we came to believe that there is advantage in piloting on site. Mining, metallurgical and geo-political considerations all have major impact and that belief has been borne out by commercial plant experience. Lateritic nickel ores differ substantially, even within the same orebody, in their amenability to extraction methods. The Falconbridge process takes account of the heterogeneous nature of the deposit. Three years of geological field exploration led to ten years of process development after it was realised that the then known metallurgical processes would not give economical extraction from the Dominican ores. In addition to establishing the viability of a novel pyrometallurgical approach, it was necessary to verify design parameters for a very considerable scale-up to prototype commercial operation. The plant was eventually constructed within the original estimates of time and cost. Unique features contributing to the technical and commercial success of the project are described. Additionally, some bold extrapolation based on pilot plant work, eventually proved to be quite conservative. The mine is not a conventional open pit operation, but is perhaps better characterised as an earth moving job. Novel application of mobile equipment led to great flexibility in the mine, where operation of several mining fronts is essential to maintaining uniformity of ore feed to the plant. "The ecological costs related to the various optimized production schemes were calculated based on the designed ultimate pit. Moreover, the influence of the ecological costs on the selection of production schemes was discussed. In one designed pit, a series of geologically optimum pushbacks with sufficiently small increment were produced using the floating cone method founded on the principle of the highest metal content. Then all the pushbacks were reordered by the dynamic network diagram. The production scheme with the maximum NPV route was considered as the optimum one. The ecological impacts produced by mining were quantified and the ecological cost calculation models, which contain the direct eco-value loss, the indirect eco-value loss, the eco-restoration cost and the carbon emission cost were proposed. In one big open pit mine case, various production schemes were optimized and the one with maximum NPV was selected without taking into account the eco-costs. The scheme with the maximum comprehensive profit was obtained by calculating the eco-cost of each scheme. The results showed that the best scheme considered with the eco-cost was not the scheme with the maximum NPV. Therefore, the eco-cost presents the effect on the selection of the best production scheme.Introduction Optimizing production scheme is to determine the mining quantities of ore and rock, the pushing position of stope each year, and maximize the NPV of mine. In the theory, production scheming optimization has gone through trial and error (Pana and Carlson 1966), linear programming method (Johnson 1968), mixed integer programming (Gershon 1983), integer mapping (Kim and Cai 1990), dynamic programming et al (Gu et al 2014). In recent years, the study on production scheduling optimization has been focused on two aspects. On the one hand, the study is to solve the investment risk caused by the uncertainties of economic and geological environment (Ramazan and Dimitrakopoulos 2013, Marcotte and Caron 2010, Lamghari and Dimitrakopoulos 2012, Godoy and Dimitrakopoulos 2004, Benndorf and Shishvan 2014). On the other hand, the emphasis of the study was on reducing the problems for the optimization algorithm, to make it more efficient and practical (Cullenbine et al 2011, Shishvan and Sattarvand 2015, Askari-Nasab et al 2011, Nasab et al 2010). However, different production schemes cause different damage of mine land and pollutant emission, thus triggering environment problem. With the improvement of people’s consciousness of environment protection, the environmental issue of mining has been attracting more and more attention."

INTRODUCTION This paper presents an assessment of conventional flotation technology. In addition it presents some ideas which can be used to change the perception of what may be done with conventional flotation equipment to maximize its efficiency. Perspective of Conventional Flotation Technology 1. Flotation in many coal preparation plants is defined as something between a necessary evil and a non-viable concept because: -Too much art is required on a continuous basis to achieve uniformly acceptable results. -It is expensive, the capital cost in dollars per ton of circuit feed for flotation and dewatering is high. -It is a difficult process to use when SO2 reduction governs system design and equipment selection. -It creates a product (fine coal froth) that is difficult to dewater in the presence of BTU/lb as-received pressures. -It is a difficult process to control from a management standpoint, there are no dependable set points to rely on. 2. Many froth cell circuits are 0.5m x 0 (nominal 28 M x 0) feed which is sourced from screen/cyclone underflows. The original intent was to obtain maximum yield at acceptable product quality and moisture using disc filters. (See Figure #1) 3. An alternate to conventional flotation and its perceived to be limits of efficiency, capital costs, etc. is to move towards such developing flotation technologies as column flotation, reverse flotation, and microbubbles. A lot of work is being done to move these concepts thru pilot stages into full scale, commercial plant operation. The majority of the coal producers and coal preparation plant designers view these concepts as being in the development/pilot plant stages. OBJECTIVES Based on the preceeding comments of the perspectives of the coal producers and plant designers, the options are limited. They can make do with what they have available to them in the way of industry standard equipment and practices or they can move forward with developing technology. I feel there is a third option: what can we really do today with what is available to us, without reinventing the wheel? APPROACH 1. When processing coal against ash and SO2 restrictions, the fine clean coal stream can be the best stream on the clean coal conveyor due to the release by size and the ability to create a high BTU/low sulfur (dry basis) product. 2. Targets: -Consistent raw coal size consist in the plant feed . -Do not put pyrites in the froth cells. -Adjust criteria defining good flotation away from yield towards maximum BTU recovery at minimum ash. -Limit the froth cell feed size consist to 0.15 mm x 0 (nominal 100M x 0). -Establish and maintain a correct, consistent percent solids in the froth cell feed. -Select flotation reagents with care. -Introduce reagents in the proper sequence.

Rusk County is located in the northwestern portion of the state of Wisconsin, roughly 130 miles east of Minneapolis (Figure 1). The topography is generally flat with dairy farming the principal activity. Forest and swamp lands are common, as well as pasture and cultivated ground. Rusk County falls near the southern terminus of the Precambrian Shield and is covered by a thick layer of glacial drift. Outcrops are quite rare, but the few available exposures indicate that the subsurface is comprised of steeply dipping metamorphosed volcanics and sediments of Early Proterozoic age. A thin section of flatlying Cambrian sandstone is sometimes found directly under the glacial till. The depth to Precambrian basement has been recorded to be as great as 150 feet beneath the surface.

A core from the La Camelia attapulgite mine in north Florida was studied in detail to determine the detailed vertical variability and the relations of the various parameters. The structural, textural, mineralogical and chemical data indicate there are two major depositional cycles represented within the minable interval. The sediments deposited during the two cycle differ in detail but in general are similar. The environments of deposition grade from shallow marine to lagoonal to tidal flat to marsh. The sedimentary structure (lamination, burrows, pebble conglomerate), mineralogy (attapulgite, montmorillonite, sepiolite, dolomite, calcite) chemistry (Al, Mg, Fe) are closely related to each other and their nature is determined by the depositional environments. Most of the clay minerals and carbonate minerals are authigenic and are therefore particularly sensitive to environmental differences. The variability and environmental features seen in this core are characteristic of the sediments in the general attapulgite mining area. A detailed understanding of the relationships discussed should be of value in prospecting, mining and processing.
