Filters and absorbents purify, clarify, and clean many types of liquids by removing solid particles. In addition, absorbents provide a convenient way to handle liquids and to clean up liquid wastes or spills. Filtration or absorptive processes are accomplished either in a mechanical way, as in absorption and filtration, or in a chemical way, as in adsorption. In filtration, minerals and rocks used as filter mediums are extensively utilized in applications requiring the filtration of high volumes of liquids. End use applications include liquid food products, waste waters, petroleum and chemicals, and drugs and pharmaceuticals. Upon closer examination of all of the materials used as filters and absorbents, industrial minerals and rocks represent only a small proportion of the total amount, as shown in [Fig. 1] (Rees, 1991). Given all the industries that use these minerals, most of the volume is concentrated in a few major end-use markets. Within these major end-use markets, a handful of minerals account for most of the total volume and value. The focus for this chapter will be to discuss the industrial minerals and rocks used as filters and absorbents in the most important markets. The selection of the minerals and markets to review is solely based on the total volume of material used and in special cases, those where the value of the market and material is high. The major materials include diatomite, perlite, sand, gravel, and such specialty clays as montmorillonite and attapulgite. These materials are mainly used for the filtration of food, chemical, and petroleum products. In addition, they are used as absorbents for pet litter and oil and grease spills, and as carriers for pesticides and fertilizers.

This paper by Mr. McIvor is yet another contribution to the eternal controversy surrounding the benefits, or otherwise, of high circulating loads in closed circuit grinding. Throughout the paper it is difficult to establish whether the author is referring to effects relating to the mill, classifier, or to the overall circuit. Table 1 is put forward as indicating the advantage of operating at high circulating loads. From the two (it would be interesting to see more) product sizing points provided in each case, the conclusions to be drawn are that cases one and two have very similar size analyses. The third case, however, indicates a much flatter curve, that is to say, higher fines production and a very wide spread of size ranges. If the objective of this circuit is to provide a closely sized product with minimum overground slimes to the downstream process, then it would appear to be the less "efficient" by far. No data is given for product pulp densities either. The term "efficiency" should never be used without a careful and clear definition. In this case, "efficiency" is used to express an apparent percentage reduction in operating work index (Bond) from the measured "standard" at 250% circulating load operation. Understanding aquifer properties in surface mine backfill is essential for managing the groundwater flow system as well as controlling the formation and discharge of acid urine drainage. Slug tests (injection and withdrawal) performed on wells in mine spoil may yield two distinctly different response characteristics. One type of response is indicative of a porous media system. The second type of response indicates the presence of a pseudokarst system. The presence of voids or conduits in the backfill is indicated by an almost instantaneous partial recovery of the water level displacement. This rapid recovery is turbulent flow and cannot be analyzed by conventional (Darcian) methods. The turbulent flow may cause the calculated hydraulic conductivity to be less than the actual values. The slug dissipation surface area created by the voids contiguous to the test well add to the known dissipation surface area of the screened interval. This can cause the calculated hydraulic conductivity to be greater than the actual hydraulic conductivity or the aquifer to appear more permeable. Whenever analyzing data from aquifer tests in mine spoil, these potential problems must be kept in mind. In spite of the problems encountered during slug testing of spoil, the aquifer hydraulic parameters derived and the slug responses observed remain useful in the hydrologic characterization of a mine site.

Large roof outbursts began occurring in November 1986 at Domtar's Sifto Salt Mine in Goderich, Ontario, Canada, working the bedded Salina A-2 Salt unit. The outbursts, measuring about 13-20 m in diameter, released high concentrations of methane from cavities that extended into carbonate roof units. Spontaneous ignitions of methane gas during an outburst seriously burned a mine technician. The Canadian Ministry of Labour contacted the U.S. Bureau of Mines for technical assistance to aid in mine managements1 efforts in alleviating the problem. Initial gas content determinations of salt samples from the outbursts by acoustic test methodology revealed no methane enrichment. In- mine core drilling and subsequent methane content testing indicates the main source of methane in overlying roof units. Drilling the roof units demonstrated the potential of draining methane from areas showing signs of impending outbursting and alleviating the danger. Three mechanisms are considered the most likely means by which methane was introduced to the mine environment. These are (1) hydrocarbon gases released from brines, (2) gas transport along horizontal bedding planes or gas accumulations in bedding separations, and (3) mining-induced fracturing. The abundance of higher hydrocarbons in gas yielded by non-evaporite rock samples from the Goderich mine may be indicative of a former association with liquid petroleum.

The majority of Appalachian coal deposits lie in a multi-seam environment. Historically, the decision to extract a particular seam has been based on ease of access, ownership and economics rather than ground control considerations. As mining progresses and seams are being mined out, it is increasingly common to find working and abandoned mines in close vertical proximity to each other. Such contiguous operations can produce both positive and negative ground control situations in neighboring seams. These ground control problems, defined as interaction problems, are frequently reported, and their severity can range from minor roof problems that may require no additional support to complete loss of a large section of coal reserves (Stemple, 1955; Peng & Chandra, 1980; Haycocks & Karmis, 1983; Su et al, 1984). As a consequence, interaction problems are of growing concern to the Appalachian underground coal industry. Although interaction problems in multi-seam mining have been recognized for many years and many investigations have been conducted to study the problems, the ground control principles involved in their development are only partially understood. Previous research has identified four interaction mechanisms: pillar load transfer, innerburden shearing, arching effects and upper seam subsidence (Haycocks et al, 1982; Haycocks & Karmis, 1983). Pillar load transfer mechanisms and innerburden shearing have been successfuly used to explain interaction phenomena associated with undermining operations, while arching and subsidence have been used to assess problems during overmining. In addition, interaction-controlling factors such as cover, innerburden and seam thicknesses, extraction percentages on both seams, time delay between operations on two seams, and characteristics of innerburden rock have been identified and utilized in evaluation of interaction effects (Haycocks & Karmis, 1983; Webster et a1.,1984). As an example, Figure 1 shows the relation of innerburden layering and thickness to interaction on the lower seam. The combination of such theoretical work and the analysis of case study information has made it possible to determine, with a certain degree of confidence, the interaction damage in undermining conditions. The results of such an approach have been sufficiently successful and complete to be incorporated into a software package to assist field engineers in estimating potential interaction effects when undermining a previously mined upper seam (Grenoble et al, 1984; Grenoble & Haycocks, 1985; Grenoble et al, 1985). During 1992 a number of papers were published on aspects of respiratory disease in US underground coal miners. These included reports on trends in prevalence of coal workers' pneumoconiosis, the risks of developing coal workers' pneumoconiosis in relation to dust exposure, and the relationship between lung disease other than pneumoconiosis and dust exposure. The intent of this paper is to provide a summary of the essential findings from these investigations. PREVALENCE AND INCIDENCE OF COAL WORKERS' PNEUMOCONIOSIS Coal workers' pneumoconiosis (CWP) is usually detected in living miners through use of the chest x-ray. Deposits of dust in the lung, and the fibrotic tissue reactions to the dust, are manifested on the x-ray as small and large opacities. These abnormalities are quantified into degrees of severity using a standardized classification scheme (the International Classification of Radiographs of the Pneumoconioses of the International Labour Office). For small opacities, the scheme provides for a four-point scale of abnormality (0, 1, 2, 3), reflecting increasing profusion of the opacities on the x-ray. In this report, category 1 or greater small rounded opacities (CWP 1+) represents the earlier radiographic stages of pneumoconiosis. Large opacities, indicate the later and often disabling stage of pneumoconiosis, usually referred to as progressive massive fibrosis (PMF). Information collected in a national surveillance program for underground coal miners (the Coalworkers' X-ray Surveillance Program (CWXSP)) and a large epidemiologic study (National Study of Coalworkers' Pneumoconiosis (NSCWP)) provide a means to assess trends in CWP prevalence over the years following the reduction in dust levels mandated by the 1969 Federal Coal Mine Health and Safety Act (FCMHSA). These programs are operated by the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH), and are described in detail in Attfield and Althouse (1992) and Attfield and Castellan (1992). Both studies were divided administratively into distinct time periods, and the results shown here reflect that division. Figure 1 shows the prevalence of CWP 1+ as determined from data from the CWXSP, plotted by time period and years in mining. There is evidence of a temporal reduction in prevalence. (The lack of an obvious decline in the early 1970s may be an artifact arising from use of different versions of the standard classification.) If the primary purpose of a control system is to assure a fixed-quality product at maximum yield, the real issue involved in control of the fine coal cleaning circuit in a plant is to demonstrate that control is technically feasible and economically beneficial . This paper suggests that it is not easy to do so in most cases. Fine coal, defined here as the 28 mesh x 0 fraction of the plant feed, is generally cleaned using a combination of hydrocyclones and flotation. Both of these processes are relatively insensitive to changes in operating variables. Further, the fines fraction general 1 y forms no more than 20% of the plant feed and, at times, is as low as 10%. The instruments to measure flow rates, densities, and product qua1ity (ash, sulfur, etc.) are not sufficiently accurate to allow effective responses to changing state variables and product quality. It is sufficient to run the fine coal circuits at maximum recovery, and the control of product quality and optimization of yield should be achieved by controlling the coarse coal circuits and measuring the quality of the entire clean coal leaving the plant. This contention is made with particular reference to U.S. plants cleaning coal for the utility industry and should be viewed in this context only. It is explicitly admitted that this strategy is mathematically non-optimal in the sense that all size fractions are not necessarily cleaned at equal elementary ash, and would result in a loss of yield. However, under the conditions of conventional coal cleaning practice, this is a sensible approach.

Tailings management represents a major portion of the cost associated with extraction of gold. For each gram of gold extracted, 150 to 200 kg of waste material is produced. Because of environmental concerns and unwillingness of society to accept environmental damage caused by poor waste management practices it has become essential to follow responsible and safe practices in tailings management. This paper presents general aspects of tailings management and discusses different techniques utilized. Characteristics of tailings and the effects that these have on stability and environmental aspects are discussed. The paper also discusses the effect of mine back-filling practices on the surface disposal of the remaining tailings fraction.

The recirculation of mine air in an underground colliery, has always been regarded as a hazardous practice in South African collieries. The Mines and Works Act and Regulations states that fresh air, flowing Into an underground section, must flow out directly into the return airways after being utilized once in the section. One of the largest producing underground collieries in South Africa, Initiated a project on controlled recirculation with the permission of the South African Government Mining Engineer. The project involves the recirculation of 65 m3/s of air inside a ventilation district which serves a total of six production areas. The aim of the project was to increase the airflow to the sections without altering the existing ventilation system. Tracer gas studies were carried out to determine the actual distribution of the recirculated air to the individual areas. The results showed that an effective 54,18 m3/s of the recirculated 65 m3/s reaches the sections. This gives an air utilization figure of 83,4 per cent. Dust surveys were also carried out as part of the project to determine the effect of the recirculation of the return air on airborne dust levels. The results showed that the dust levels remained constant in the main intake and return airways and that no hazardous situation was being created. The project proved to be successful and showed that controlled recirculation can be executed and used as a solution for the supply of air to sections without endangering any lives.

Particle-size Distribution Specifications for Particulates. Feed to and finished products from size-reduction operations are defined in terms of the particulate sizes involved. It is also well to know whether the ultimate individual particle is being measured, or, if any aggregation or agglomeration of particles exists, whether this has been created by the size-reduction operation. The most complete description of a powder is given by its particle¬size distribution. This can be plotted in terms of cumulative percent oversize or undersize in relation to the diameters of particles, or it can be plotted as a distribution of the amounts present in each unit of diameter against the several diameters. It is common to employ a weight basis for percentage, but there are some data in the literature where frequency, or number of particles, is used. The basis of percent¬age, whether weight, frequency, or some less commonly used factor, should be specified, as also should be stated the diameter, its units, and preferably whether determined by sieve, settling velocity, or other¬wise. Fig. I presents two sets of distributions-ore cumulative and the other in unit intervals. The slopes of the 5-µ intervals of the cumulative curves are converted to percent per micron and plotted as a block, or histogram, from which smooth curves are derived. Powder A has a narrower, or tighter, size range for the bulk of its weight than powder B. Both materials have the same weights below and above the size marked by the arrow. Simpler treatments of distribution are possible. In some cases the significant value is the top size. Since the 100% point is dubious, some amount, as 95 or 98%, so specified, can be called top size. In other cases the percent on some sieve helps define coarseness. Merely stating that all, or all but a small percentage, passes a given sieve is inadequate for defining the true fineness or a material. Complete parti¬cle-size analysis to show the distribution is essential for most compari¬sons and calculations. Particle-Size Equations. A number of equations have been pro¬posed to correlate the quantity of a particulate material with its parti¬cle size to obtain a distribution relationship. Introduction Inorganic depressants are chemicals added to the froth flotation process to maintain or produce hydrophylic surfaces on one or more minerals so they will remain in the pulp rather than attach to the air bubbles. Whether a depressant will be effective in depressing a given mineral depends on how it is used and the environment in which it is used. Some depressants must be added and conditioned into the pulp before the collector is added. Other depressants can be added in the presence of previously added collectors and effectively depress the desired minerals. Often the concentration of depressant relative to the collector concentration is critical to making an economic separation. It should be noted that some depressants will only work when specific collectors have been used. Some reagents such as sulfuric acid and hydrogen peroxide essentially act as depressants by altering the previously added collectors so that they are no longer effective. Some depressants such as sodium ferrocyanide are only effective in a very limited pH range and an essentially collector free environment. Major Depressants CaO Milk of Lime is by far the most used depressant both in tonnage and dollar value. Although it is most commonly listed as a pH modifier, it is also an important depressant for pyrite in copper and copper molybdenite flotation plants. Although a simple pH adjustment will often depress pyrite, there are times when grinding with fresh milk of lime is required to obtain optimum depression. Lime is also a molybdenite and gold depressant. NaSH Sodium hydrosulfide is by far the most commonly used reagent to depress copper and iron sulfide minerals in by-product molybdenite flotation plants. NaSH also depresses gold, silver sulfides and silver chloride. ZnSO4 Zinc sulfate is commonly used to depress sphalerite in lead-zinc and copper-lead- zinc flotation plants. It has also been used to effectively depress talc in by-product molybdenite circuits at a pH of 6.5.

The main scope of the present study is to investigate the suitability and sensitivity of the magnetic susceptibility as a pollution monitoring tool in urban areas. For this purpose, a municipal park located in the centre of Chania city, which may be affected by traffic and domestic heating pollution, was selected as the study area. In the context of the present work, magnetic susceptibility measurements were conducted in two phases. Surface soil samples were collected in 2006 from the area under investigation and they were analyzed in order to estimate the spatial distribution of the magnetic susceptibility. One year later, mapping of the magnetic susceptibility has been contacted in situ using Bartington MS2D and MS2F sensors. Additionally, soil samples were collected from selected positions in order to compare the values of the magnetic susceptibility with that estimated in 2006 research. Both investigations indicate high values of the magnetic susceptibility around the park near the roads and in a small area inside the park where a café is located.

Their presentation will be on gainsharing. WALTER COOK: How many of you have gainsharing plans in place currently at your location? [show of hands] A considerable number-more than about half the room. Of those plans, how many of them do you consider as meeting your needs and being successful? [show of hands, far fewer, general audience laughter] You have all at least heard the word "gainsharing." Some of you undoubtedly aren't quite sure what gainsharing is, while others obviously have gainsharing plans in place and are looking for ways to improve them. In the short time I have now I'll be able to give you a precursory look at gainsharing and some brief ideas on where to look to improve your current plans. Over the years, I've found that it is often best to explain gainsharing by comparing it to other forms of employee compensation

During the mining process, the in-situ material is broken into different size ranges, from very large pieces to very fine particles. Some of the fine particles become airborne. In underground coal mining, airborne respirable dust is associated with health and safety of the miners. The amount and size distributions of airborne dust are important parameters to effective dust control measures. The design of underground mine experiments, including sampling procedures and sample analyses methods to determine these parameters are presented in this paper. A total of fifteen continuous miner cuts were sampled. The amount of dust generated during the cutting process and the relationship between total and respirable airborne dust concentrations and amounts are examined. The amount of respirable dust airborne is on the average only 0.016% of the respirable dust generated. On the average, 61% of the total airborne dust measured is in the respirable size range. The amount of respirable airborne is on the average 36% of the respirable size fraction in the total airborne dust. For equal proportion of rock and coal material cut, rock contributes about twice as much fines (=0.22 mm) as coal. Additional fundamental research is necessary to further the understanding of the airborne propensity of respirable dusts in mine atmospheres.

Jet grouting is a viable supplementary measure for NATM tunneling in special softground conditions. In particular it is used as a type of forepoling to maintain face stability and to provide initial support for large openings until the shotcrete lining reaches sufficient strength. For this purpose cement grout is injected under high pressure through horizontal pipes outside of the tunnel perimeter and thoroughly mixed with the soil producing 1 to 3-foot diameter cylindrical beams. Excavation of the tunnel then proceeds beneath this umbrella of 40 to 50 foot long beams. Design and construction experiences from recent projects are presented for tunnels diameters between 30 and 50 feet in fill and alluvial and colluvial deposits.

The recommendations resulting from a Dispute Review Board (DRB) hearing of a contract dispute are being challenged more and more frequently. This paper explores possible causes based on the authors’ experiences. Challenges facing the DRB process include: The DRB process is starting to lose some of the informality and flexibility. Both owners and contractors appear to be putting too much weight on a board recommendation on a dispute. DRB’s do not make “decisions,” they provide recommendations for dispute resolution to both parties. The DRB process is not just for contractors to present an unresolved issue to a board hearing. Owners can also initiate a request for a hearing on a disputed issue. For the DRB process to remain a viable element of the successful construction project, confidence must continue to be maintained in a process that is intended to work on behalf of both parties to the construction contract.

Radian Corporation (Radian) has developed a process for treating Cr(V1)-contaminated soils that involves: 1) soil washing using an alkaline extractant, 2) biological reduction of Cr(V1) to Cr(II1) in the soil wash effluent, and 3) separation of Cr(II1) from the biologically treated effluent. Biological treatment has been demonstrated for immobilized cells in fluidized bed bioreactors and suspended cells in slurry bioreactors for Cr(V1) levels ranging from 30 to 600 mg/L which have been reduced to non-detectable levels (< 0.05 mg/L; method detection limit [MDL]) during hydraulic residence times as short as 12 hours. The resulting Cr(II1)-containing effluent stream was chemically treated to precipitate chromium hydroxide for removal by physical separation.

A simple method for estimating the steady-state water quality of a pit lake is presented. The steady-state concentration of a conservative chemical constituent in a pit lake is shown to be a simple function of the inflow rate, the evaporation rate and the inflow concentration. An analytical method is presented for estimating the equilibrium ground water-inflow rate for use in water-quality predictions. The time required to reach chemical steady state is estimated using an iterative mass-balance model. Mine operators should find the methodology useful for planning and screening regulatory applications where conservative estimates of pit lake water quality are desirable.

For tunnels with low overburden, the shotcrete lining is the main element of ground support, which is why shotcrete behavior is of prime importance. Following its application, shotcrete not only gains strength and stiffness with time but—if loaded at an early stage—it is also subject to creep which in turn leads to stress relaxation. For two-dimensional FE calculations, a computational modulus of elasticity of shotcrete is to be used. Based on parameter studies it was found that the modulus of elasticity of shotcrete depends on both shotcrete mix and ground behavior. While the Young’s Modulus used for young shotcrete may range from 1,000 to 7,000 MPa, the Young’s Modulus used for hardened shotcrete is best represented by a value of 15,000 MPa.
