A form of column flotation cell is described in which the contact between the feed and the air stream is made in a mixing device at the top of a vertical downcomer. The air-liquid mixture flows downward to discharge into a shallow pool of pulp in the bottom of a short cylindrical column. The bubbles disengage and rise to the top of the column to overflow into a concentrate launder, while the tails are discharged from the bottom of the vessel. The main advantages of the device described are that the overall height of the column is reduced to about one metre (3 ft), and the column can be self-inducing with respect to the air supply. Experimental results are given from tests on a feed stream to a conventional zinc cleaner circuit. Using wash-water to reduce gangue entrainment, the column gave high concentrate grades and high recoveries.

The need to feed an established talc mill from a crude ore source located closer to the mill prompted the 1986 drilling of a previously mapped, talc-carbonate deposit. This talc-bearing rock had never been considered a potential source of crude talc ore because of the high carbonate content and other deleterious minerals observed in outcrops. Selective mining, in-pit grade control and creative processing have allowed this deposit to be developed into an ore body. By definition, an ore body has to be a source of positive cash flow. With industrial minerals, this is determined as much by market acceptance as by ore tenor.

At the RETC 1979 in Atlanta/Georgia it was reported about the beginnings of the Hydroshield system and the first site experiences. Since that time over 10 miles of tunnels in various diameters have been built with that system, and the discussion of the two most interesting projects will be the main topics of this paper. AURELIA TUNNEL, ROME In Rome, the railway system is going to be completed and modernized. Therefore, it is necessary to tunnel through the Roman hills. Part of the new railway system is the Aurelia Tunnel, located some 100 feet below the famous Via Aurelia Antigua, close to the Vatican. The double track railway tunnel has an internal diameter of 9.44 m and a length of 2.410 m. It runs through completely differing soil conditions. (Fig. 1) The first 1000 t are situated in watertight clay, the rear part in water bearing loamy, clayey sands with interlayers of loamy clays. The figure shows the soft change-over from clay to sand. The McKinley Mine is located in the northwest New Mexico, in McKinley County, approximately 25 miles from Gallup. The mine is operated by The Pittsburg & Midway Coal Mining Co. (P&M), a wholly owned subsidiary of the Chevron Corporation. P&M is headquartered in Englewood, Colorado. Since the McKinley Mine began operations in 1962 a total of 83,391,000 metric tons of coal have been sold through 1990. The 1991 production was approximately 5.000.000 metric tons. The mine operations are contained on a 109.000 square kilometers lease area of which 44.000 square kilometers are on the Navajo Nation. The present customer base consists of four utilities and one industrial account, all of which are located in Arizona. The utility customers are the Arizona Public Service Co. Cholla Station at Joseph City, The Salt River Project. Coronado Generating Station near Joseph City, and The Tucson Electric Company, Irvington Generating Station in Tucson. The industrial customer is the Stone Container Corporation, Snowflake Paper Mill.

An understanding of the Florida Phosphate Industry, the mining practices and extraction processes and the historical development of the Industry, is essential to any consideration of reclamation. In the earliest days of the Industry, phosphate rock was produced by screening the phosphate pebble from the matrix. The waste, which consisted of overburden, clay, sand and fine phosphate, and was called "debris", was disposed of onto, either the adjacent surface area, or into mined-out pits. Since the Central Florida area was sparsely settled in those early days, there was no complaint from residents about contamination of streams or the resulting spoil piles - environmental concerns were non-existent. The development of the flotation process in the 1930's and the implementation of the flotation process in the early 1940's was a significant technological breakthrough in the Industry. This technique made possible the extraction of fine phosphate particles, and doubled the recovery of phosphate values from the matrix. However, the implementation of the flotation process produced a new waste disposal problem.

In the Gold-Cyanide Process (GCP) the cyanide anions act to solubilize the gold and silver present in the ore, and mercury as well. The resulting mercury and cyanide rich effluent are serious health and environmental problems. Currently, there is no mercury treatment from the ore leach solution since there are no precipitating agents or other technologies which can be used effectively in the pH ~ 10solutions. Recently, however, we have developed a new chelate ligand that is impervious to this level of pH and it can be used to precipitate Hg from NaCN solutions. On an actual sample taken from an active gold mine the chelate selectively reduced the mercury level from 34.5 ppm to 0.008 ppm within 15 minutes. Importantly, the gold and silver levels remained unchanged throughout this process. Thus, the environmental impact of Hg released in the GCP can be drastically reduced. Moreover, with a mercury treatment technology now available it may be possible to change, or reinvent, the entire GCP process.

In 1990, the former Soviet Union ranked first worldwide in the production of asbestos, chromium, iron ore, iron and steel, lime, manganese, mercury, nickel, peat, potash, and titanium. Since the middle of this century, that nation had maintained one of the world's most valuable mineral industries, ranking number two in 1950 and number one in 1990. It is clearly an enormous mining industry, with more than 1300 enterprises and an estimated employment base of 1.2 million persons (Table 1). Despite its size and historical achievements, however, the mining industry of the 1990s in the former Soviet republics is encountering problems in performance, efficiency, transportation and utilization. The industry operates below full capacity and is plagued by outdated technology and equipment, rising production costs, capital shortages and labor strikes, in addition to general economic deterioration and civil unrest. Attempts to boost domestic minerals supply in the republics so far have failed because of economic difficulties. And the republics lack the financing required to initiate new, large-scale development projects.

A new super-large 100 m3 (3500 ft3) pneumatic mechanical flotation cell is now available to meet today's mineral processing challenges. Several innovative design concepts represent a marked departure from conventional flotation cell designs. The radial discharge from the pump action rotor and the overhung vane type stator is contained in a conical bottom round tank with no dead comers. Peripheral launders collect froth overflowing the entire circumference of the tank and these launders are of a hexagonal design permitting cells to be nested together in a honeycomb fashion. The mechanism drive is either a customized right angle gear reducer or a conventional Vee belt drive. Both drive systems are available with an optional variable frequency control system that permits infinite speed adjustment of the rotor in each flotation cell or group of cells. Results of side-by-side comparative testing between three major manufacturers of super-large pneumatic mechanical flotation cells are discussed. These results were obtained at a large copper concentrator in Chile during several weeks of commercial scale testing.

A critical examination of the published results on the hemolytic ability of different forms of silica viz, quartz, cristobalite, tridymite and amorphous silica is made and it is concluded that quartz, cristobalite, and tridymite have nearly equal longterm abilities (within ±15%) but much larger than the hemolytic ability of amorphous silica when correctly compared on a per unit surface area basis. Also, a one-to-one correlation appears to be valid between the hemolysis and fibrosis studies. New results on the photoacoustic spectroscopy of amorphous silica particles heat-treated at 100, 200, 400, 550, 700, 820 and 1050°C are presented and it is observed that the intensity of the sharp silanol band at 3745 cm-1 and hemolysis by these particles have nearly the same temperature dependence. In contrast the intensity of the bulk IR modes (viz. the 797 cm-1 band) does not show any significant temperature dependence. These observations demonstrate that the surface SiOH species are involved in hemolysis by silica particles. Key words: silica polymorphs; hemolysis; silanol species

There is a markedly increasing tendency to design deeper and deeper mines, to use larger amounts of explosive per round, to increase the advance rate of the excavations and so the natural ventilation tends to be more intense in the new mines. For this reason, the mines that make use of powerful mechanical ventilation should also take into account such factors as natural ventilation pressures, especially in the case of mines excavated in high-temperature rocks for which natural ventilation is particularly intense. The results of the studies reported here refer to a very hot mine excavated in an area with a high geothermal flow (the Boccheggiano - Campiano mine, southern Tuscany). At various external temperatures, experimental measurements and analyses have been made of the trend of the thermodynamic characteristics of the ventilation air and of the trends of the air/rock heat exchange along the downcast shaft and along the upcast shaft. These data were then used to work out approximate values of the corresponding natural ventilation pressures. After having identified the most conspicuous variations of the thermodynamic parameters of the ventilation air and the factors causing them, an assessment was made of the repercussions they have on the air flow rates and, above all, on the climatic conditions of the underground excavation sites. The natural ventilation pressures were found not to be constant in time; indeed they change continously and it is difficult to predict the changes. Moreover, it was found that their influence on the ventilation of a section of the mine network is greater if the effect of mechanical ventilation on that section is weaker. In the mine section where the measurements were carried out, some portions were found where the ventilation could become insufficient as a result of the effects of natural ventilation pressures. Finally, some guidelines to be followed in designing hot mines have been put forward which ensure efficient ventilation throughout the network at times with the aid of the natural ventilation pressures, which in certain circumstances may reach very high values in mines of this type.

Introduction Bulk commodity prices are ever increasing. This forces buyers and sellers in world markets to look more carefully at methods for obtaining an accurate accounting of commodity transactions in commerce and materials utilization in processes. Weighing and sampling inaccuracies can result in loss of income, product quality, and cost controls. So weighing and sampling accuracies are extremely important. They are the key components of managing the quantity and quality control aspects of bulk materials handling. This article will confine itself to the weighing systems and will deal with various aspects of system design, calibration, and operations. Emphasis will be placed on new developments and requirements in this field. Weighing methods To measure the gravimetric pull on a body being weighed (the load), the gravimetric force must be countered by an opposing force. Measuring this counter-balancing force thus becomes the measurement of weight. The conventional even-arm balance shows the concept of balancing an unknown mass with an equal known counterbalancing mass. But the loads encountered in industry generally range up to many thousands of pounds. So it is obvious that the even-arm approach is not practical. Thus, with the exception of direct load-bearing load cells, most of the weighing equipment uses some form of lever system. This is usually a combination of first- and second-class levers, to gain a mechanical advantage. These levers permit the load force to be counter-balanced and hence measured within a practical range. Lever systems not only perform this force-reducing action, they also serve to focus the load force at a single point, for convenient measurement. They align the force vertically in one direction so that measurement accuracy will not be affected by unrelated side forces. There are five basic methods of gravimetric weight measurements. That is, there are five basic types of opposing forces. • The first is the standard weight counterbalance. It uses a known weight to counterbalance the load directly or through a lever system.

Efficient filtration of fine kaolin particles plays a crucial role in the processing of raw kaolin to a marketable product. Filtration can often be the rate-controlling step of the whole process. Consequently, plant production depends on the rates being achieved in filtration. To alleviate the bottleneck in production, Nalco Chemical Co. initiated a reagent development program to chemically enhance the performance of the filtration units. Filter aids of different classes were assembled and evaluated in bench simulations. These included reagents whose primary mode of functionality were coagulation, flocculation, thickening and combinations of each. This article discusses the development and application of a new reagent that improves the filter production rate with minimal impact on filter cake percent solids. Plant data indicate that this reagent can increase production rates by as much as 35% on clays of varying particle size, as well as clays that are calcined. The reagent's impact on solids content, re-slurrying characteristics, Brookfield and Hercules viscosity and drying is within the standards set by plants that evaluated and now use this product.

The New Austrian Tunneling Method was, as is well known, developed from conventional rock tunnelling. In Germany about 10 years ago the NATM began to be applied to partially stable soils by incorporated excavation and support methods to allow its use with these soils. The advantages of this tunnelling technique - adaptability, ecomomy, and quality have resulted in its widespread usage. Today, about 85 % of all mined tunnels in Germany are produced with this technology. This rapid development has resulted in about 40 companies operating within a geographical area about the same size as the state of Illinois that are capable of utilizing the NATM. In most cases German contract/award procedures allow the contractor to develop alternate design and plans. As a result of this flexibility and intense competition, safety factors have been gradually reduced to the lower limit of what could be regarded as demonstrably safe, and the utilization of the NATM has expanded to include higher risk conditions, namely * excavating larger cross sections. * working with less overburden. * work undertaken under less stable soil conditions.

As a general rule for gold treatment the presence of reasonable amounts of 'coarse' free gold will dictate the use of a gravity circuit. The actual particle size of gold that constitutes the por­tion of' coarse' free gold can vary widely. The larger its size the more troublesome it is, mainly because of the tendency for this gold to quickly settle out from slurries in regions of relatively low velocities. There are a multitude of places where 'coarse' gold can find a resting place, namely, in chutes, between and behind lines, in pump hoppers and in pumps themselves. Fortunately, the problems associated with recovering very 'coarse' free gold, say greater than Imm, is rare on most gold mines that have grinding and cyanide leaching circuits. For these operations it is common practice to have a gravity circuit situated within the milling circuit to recover 'coarse' free gold. Should the 'coarse' free gold constitute 15% to 20% of the total gold in a deposit then its recovery by gravity separation is seri­ously considered. As a gold mine 'matures' the availability of soft oxide ore decreases and the likelihood that harder ore having sulphide gold association increases. To maintain gold production rates in this situation either the gold grade of the treated ore must increase or more ore needs to be treated. In the latter case this is achieved by installing more grinding capacity, an expensive option, or coarsing the grind, with the downside of loss in gold recovery. In general the less expensive capital options is fol­lowed. There is, however, some upside to improve recovery when reasonable quantities of sulphide containing gold are pre­sented that can be recovered by flotation or gravity separation. Concentrates produced from these unit operations can be finely ground and reintroduced to the cyanide leach circuit to improve gold recovery. This scenario is a much less costly option than one where all the ore is ground finer. In this paper the experiences of recovering gravity gold from the Telfer Gold Mine, and gold associated pyrite from the New Celebration Mine will be discussed.

"The deposits of the east end of the Mesabi Range cover very large areas, and consist of the same taconite that produces the hematite of the central and western Mesabi. It is not deeply covered with drift, but outcrops boldly in large masses. It is not concentrated locally into enriched bodies separated by leaner areas, but is all a fairly uniform, hard, banded, unaltered chert, carrying about 25 to 30 per cent iron as magnetite.The Mesabi Iron Company, organized by Hayden, Stone & Co., and under the direction of D. C. Jackling, has taken over these deposits and is building a Concentrating plant at the new town of Babbitt, about fourteen miles east of Mesaba, Minn. This plant is to have a capacity of 2,000 to 3,000 tons per day, and is based on the application to this low grade material of the methods which have made the so-called porphyry copper properties so successful.In 1916, an experimental mill was built in Duluth; containing full sized machinery and capable of handling from 100 to 200 tons daily. A considerable tonnage of material was concentrated here during 1916, 1917 and 1918. The work showed that the resulting product could be varied, almost at will, between 60 per cent and 70 per cent iron and .006 per cent to .030 per' cent phosphorus, and that this could be made on a large scale well within the limits of cost set by iron trade conditions. A small special cargo was sent down the lakes, late in 1918, assaying 63.27 per cent iron (natural and dry) and .008 per cent phosphorus; but it is assumed that large scale shipments will normally be of a Bessemer' grade carrying about 63 per cent iron and .020 per cent to .030 per cent phosphorus. This material is a sinter, carrying only traces of sulphur and titanium, with silica between 6 per cent and 10 , per cent, and alumina, lime, magnesia, and manganese, each below 1 per cent. Some of the iron in this sinter is hematite and some is magnetite, the percentages varying according to the treatment given on the sintering machine. Like the analyses, this hematite percentage is within reasonable control. Sinter made from finely ground magnetite has much the structure of coke, being firm yet porous, and gives good account of itself in the blast furnace."

A thorough geological engineering investigation is required before surface lands overlying abandoned underground mines can be safely recommended as building sites. The major problems confronting the geological engineer are assembling accurate geologic and mining information and developing an accurate rock mechanics model of the situation. A successful investigation requires a combination of technical expertise in rock mechanics and engineering geology tempered with practical engineering judgment. The results of a good study are not always favorable to the prospective builder.

Introduction Diesel-powered vehicles are used extensively in underground mines throughout North America. The bulk of the diesel vehicles found in underground mining operations are used for loading and ore haulage, as well as for transportation of personnel and supplies. Along with the advantages of using diesels underground is the disadvantage associated with diesel-tailpipe particulate-matter emissions (DPM). The concentration of DPM in the ambient air of US underground metal mines is not now regulated by the Federal Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA). However, recent studies have shown DPM to be mutagenic (National Institute of Occupational Safety and Health, 1988), and the American Conference of Governmental Industrial Hygienists (ACGIH) has recommended that the exposures of per¬sonnel to DPM be limited to an 8-hr time-weighted average concentration (threshold limit value or TLV) of 0.15 mg/m3 (Anon., 1995). The authors, while making measurements in a number of US underground mines that use diesel haulage equipment, found mine air DPM concentrations ranging from 0.2 to 2.36 Mg/M3 (McCawley and Cocalis, 1986; Watts et al., 1989; Cantrell et al., 1991; Haney, 1992; US Bureau of Mines, 1992; Watts, 1992; Watts et al., 1995). If the proposed DPM TLV were to be adopted as a permissible exposure limit (PEL) for US underground mines, the proposed limit of 0.15 mg/m3 PEL would be lower than any of the concentrations measured in the earlier studies and would represent more than a 15-fold reduction from the maximum 2.36 mg/m3 concentration. A 0.15 mg/m3 PEL would also represent a 4.5-fold reduction from the average 0.68 mg/m3 measured mine ambient air DPM concentration reported in this paper. Other diesel tailpipe emissions that are now regulated underground include carbon monoxide (CO), with a PEL of 50 ppm; nitrogen dioxide (NO,), with a PEL of 5 ppm; nitric oxide (NO), with a PEL of 25 ppm; and sulfur dioxide (SO,) with a PEL of 5 ppm. Because the concentrations of these gaseous pollutants and DPM are affected by the state-of-maintenance (Waytulonis,1992), it is important that a means be developed to measure emissions from engines that are now in service to determine when maintenance is needed. The current study was the result of an inquiry by mine¬maintenance personnel who had been receiving complaints about high concentrations of diesel soot (DPM) in mine headings from load-haul-dump (LHD) vehicle operators. Mine-maintenance personnel were searching for an objective test to determine if the diesel tailpipe particulate emitted was excessive. The mine was also evaluating electronically controlled, two-cycle, naturally aspirated, direct-injection diesel engines on some of their JCI (John-Clark Inc.) load-haul-dump (LHD) vehicles. These LHD vehicles were used to haul freshly blasted ore from mine headings to a feeder breaker. The feeder breaker breaks down the larger chunks and feeds the broken ore onto a conveyor. Michigan Technological University, in past studies, developed an emissions-measurement apparatus (EMA) ca¬pable of measuring diesel vehicle tailpipe pollutant concentrations (Chan et al., 1992; Chan et al., 1993; Carlson et al., 1994). At the time of the study reported here, most of the mine's LHD vehicles used a 12-cylinder, four-cycle, naturally aspirated prechamber diesel engine. The study was undertaken in cooperation with mine maintenance supervisors from late 1992 through July 1993. The objectives were to compare diesel exhaust emissions between the 6-cylinder, two-cycle, electronically controlled, direct-injected diesel engine and the 12-cylinder, four-cycle, prechamber diesel engine and to, then, use the data collected, in conjunction with mine ambient air measurements, to demonstrate the application of the "deterioration factor" (Chan et al., 1992), which is a measure of the state-of-maintenance of mine-vehicle engines that are now in service. The information would be used to identify vehicles that need maintenance to reduce emissions. Introduction Ball mills are lined drums, either cylindrical in shape or modified cylinders that have either one or both ends of the shell, consisting of conical sections, that rotate about the horizontal axis. Fig. I I shows a cylindrical mill, Fig. 12 a conical ball mill, and Fig. 13 a Tricone ball mill (Hardinge tradename). Steel or iron grinding media, generally in the shape of spheres, are used to grind the ore to the specified product size. In order to obtain more contact area for grinding and to simulate the shape of worn balls, balls have been made with two concave surfaces diametrically opposite each other. Some concentra¬tors, such as Erie Mining Co., have used slugs cut from worn and broken rods to supplement the balls in ball mills and save money otherwise lost as rod scrap. Cylindrical and conical shapes have been tried instead of balls, but balls remain as the most common shape grinding media used in ball mills. Ball mills were a logical development from the earlier pebble mills that used hard natural pebbles such as flint pebbles or sized ore pebbles (obtained from the ore itself) as grinding media. In the early 1900s36 it was found that when cast iron or cast steel balls were used in place of flint or ore pebbles, the mills drew more power and gave greater production capacity. Advances in technology have resulted in the manufacture of ball mills up to 18 ft diam inside shell, drawing up to 8,000 hp. Ball mills are employed to grind ores, especially the more abrasive ores, to finer sizes than can be produced economically in other size¬reduction machines such as roll crushers, hammer mills, and impactors. Ores can be ground dry-dry grinding-or in a slurry-wet grinding-using ball mills. Dry grinding nominally refers to less than I %v moisture by weight. If the moisture content increases by several percent, dry grinding capacity is significantly reduced as shown in Table 17. The usual range of solids content in wet ball-mill slurries is from 65 to 80% by weight. Wet grinding is used to prepare the feed material for unit opera¬tions such as flotation, magnetic separation, gravity concentration, and leaching that require a slurry of liberated valuable mineral and unwanted gangue particles. Dry grinding" is employed to produce feed for agglomeration, pelletizing, and pyrometallurgy processes that require feed that is dry or nearly so and for finely ground industrial mineral products used in the dry state. Dry grinding is also used when minerals cannot be dewatered economically to the required moisture level or when the ground product reacts unfavorably with liquids. For example, cement clinker must be ground dry. Dry grinding requires about 30% more power than wet grinding for comparable size reduction .28 The total power required in a dry¬grinding ball-mill plant including drying may be double that required for a wet-grinding plant. Grinding-media and liner consumption in dry grinding reported as pounds of metal consumed per kilowatt-hour per ton of ore" is 10-20% of that used in wet grinding. The Wabush pellet plant, Point Noire, Que.3o reported ball consumption dropped from 6.3 lb per ton of ore ground to 2.5 lb per ton of ore ground when they converted from wet to dry grinding, and a 30% increase in power consumption. A number of comparisons made on wet and dry grinding of cement raw materials show metal consumption in dry grinding to be 10% of that in wet grinding. The capital costs for wet grinding are generally lower than for dry grinding. When thickening and filtering of the wet-ground product are required, dry grinding may have a lower capital cost. With open-circuit grinding the ball-mill discharge passes directly to the next processing step without being screened or classified and no fraction is returned to the ball mill (Fig. 14). In closed-circuit grinding the ground material, undersize, in the ball-mill discharge is removed either using a screen or a classifier with the oversize being returned to the mill for additional size reduction (Fig. 15). The over¬size material that is returned to the ball mill is called the circulating load. Open-circuit ball-mill grinding requires more power than closed¬-circuit grinding for products containing similar amounts of top-size material. The less the amount of oversize allowed in the product, the longer the ore must remain in the ball mill when grinding in open circuit. This increases the production of extreme fines and thus the consumption of more power. The power required for open-circuit ball-mill grinding can be estimated using the multipliers listed in Table 18 and knowing the power required for closed-circuit grinding to yield the desired product particle size.
