Oxidation state of titanium was determined in CaO-SiO2-TiOxslags in the composition range25–53 per cent CaO, 27–46 per cent SiO2, 10–55 per cent TiOxat 1873K using gas equilibration method. In the experiments, slags with different titanium oxide contents were equilibrated with a known carbon monoxide and carbon dioxide ratio. The results were used to determine the Ti3+and Ti4+contents as well as the activity coefficient ratio of corresponding oxides in the slag. The dependency of the activity coefficient ratio as a function of oxygen partial pressure was determined. In modern steel continuous casting technologies mould fluxes are well-known to assure lubrication required by tribological system of mould-solidifying strand shell, and to provide crystalline phase solid film, contributing to control heat extraction between strand and mould wall. Actual cooling rates during normal continuous casting mould operations are far higher than critical cooling rate of the liquid slag. Indeed, DTA measurements point out that even relatively small cooling rates of 30?50 K/min are high enough to give exiguous formation of crystals. In this paper, contribution of devitrification in defining crystalline phase formation of industrial basic mould slag, used in continuous casting of crack-sensitive steel grades, has been investigated by means of non-isothermal experiments study. Devitrification has proved to play a major role in mould flux crystallization in a working environment explaining the higher amount of crystalline phase formed in plant sample in comparison with lab sample from DTA analysis with typical cooling rate of 5?20 K/min. The amount of crystalline phases formed ranks as follow: Cuspidine > Combeite > Gehlenite. Kinetic analysis of DTA non-isothermal experiments has provided kinetic parameters through Kissinger and Ozawa methods, as Avrami constant resulting to be n ?2 and activation energy of Cuspidine crystallization resulting to be EC= 315 kJ/mole. The effect of addition to the parent material of oxides as MnO, TiO2, ZrO2, Al2O3 and Fe2O3near to saturation point has proved to affect, in certain cases, crystallization behaviour of mold flux. In particular, MnO, TiO2, ZrO2oxides produce a relevant dump of crystallization of Combeite and Gehlenite phases, while Al2O3and Fe2O3do not appreciably affect crystallization. Mineral resource evaluation and estimation process is not an exact science; however it depends on the knowledge and experience of the competent person and his ability to apply his mind, make reasonable assumptions, interpretations and exercise sound judgment in the mineral resource estimation process. The mineral resource evaluation results in a mineral resource statement are disclosed to investors. The minerals industry is presently undergoing rapid changes in legislation governing the public reporting of mineral assets. It has gone through different phases of development with respect to the reporting of mineral resources and mineral reserves (mineral assets). In the past no reporting was done and currently mineral assets are reported as a supplementary section that briefly describes the mineral asset termed ?the mineral reserve and mineral resource statement?. The current industry trend appears to be going towards recognition and disclosure of the mineral assets on to the balance sheet. This paper explores the salient issues behind the mineral resources and mineral reserve statement of vein and reef deposits published in the public domain. It also highlights the potential misleading consequences of these issues and which filter through to the valuation of these particular mineral assets. The creation of reporting standards in the minerals industry has made significant inroads in standardizing and consolidating the interpretation and understanding of the different classification categories in the industry in an effort to promote common interpretation towards these salient issues.

Plasma is partially ionized gas composed of ions, electrons and activated elements at high temperature. Some flying ash from incinerated municipal waste is melted to become glass by a transfer-type arc plasma furnace. As the glass is ionic silicate, when an electric current passes through anode to cathode, ions in molten slag electrochemically react with electron in plasma at the surface of molten slag. In case of molten Na2O-SiO2, sodium ions in the molten slag carry electric current and SiO2are reduced to evaporate as SiO gas by electron in plasma. The cases of Ag+in NaNO3-KNO3molten salt and Fe2+in FeO-SiO2slag were examined. The amount of cathodic reaction is larger than that of anodic reaction and not apparently according to the Faraday?s law on the electrochemical reactions.

A test has been devised that can predict accurately the % crystallinity developed in a slag film formed between the steel strand and the mould. The % crystallinity in the test samples was determined and compared with that for slag films formed in the mould when casting with that flux. There was good agreement between the % crystallinity in the test samples and the slag films. It was found that additions of TiO2and ZrO2had little effect on the amount of crystalline phase formed, but additions of CaO caused a dramatic increase in the amount of crystalline phase formed. Various parameters (which can be calculated from chemical composition of the flux) have been plotted against % crystallinty in the test samples. It was found that the modified (NBO/T) ratio provided the best relation with % crystallinity for the various parameters tested. There commended relation is % crystallinity=141.1(NBO/T)-284.0. The Skorpion process comprises three processing steps, atmospheric leaching in sulphuric acid, zinc solvent extraction and electrowinning to produce special high grade zinc. The major mode of impurity transfer was attributed to crud runs in the solvent extraction circuit. Crud may be described as a heterogeneous, partly inorganic, partly organic mass of material which accumulates predominantly at the interface between organic and aqueous solutions. The paper describes the route causes of the crud formation in the solvent extraction circuit and optimisation strategies which are being followed to prevent impurity excursions in electrowinning. Pushback 8 South is the final cut back on the south wall of the East Pit at BHPBilliton?s Mt Whaleback iron ore mine in the Pilbara region of Western Australia. Development of the cutback commenced in 1999 and is now nearing completion with ultimate pit walls up to 300m high. This paper describes the geotechnical, structural and hydrogeological setting of PB8S, reconciliation between design and slope performance and the slope engineering techniques used to effectively manage the risks associated with the slope. These techniques include slope buttressing and sequential mining with waste backfilling, as well as a detailed program of displacement and hydrogeological monitoring, structural mapping and slope stability assessment. During the course of slope formation recent developments in remote slope displacement monitoring using radar and remote structural mapping using terrestrial photogrammetry have also been applied. Aspects of the PB8S slope management plan are relevant to many large scale open pit slopes. This paper provides geotechnical practitioners with information which may be helpful in managing geotechnical risk in similar environments.

A number of challenges face platinum concentrator plant operators. These challenges include the increase in operating costs, the increase in smelter cost for the processing of concentrate, the shortage and cost of power, and the tightening of specifications on concentrate quality by the toll-smelting operations. Over the years the focus has moved from extracting the platinum group metals (PGM) from the Merensky Reef to the UG2 reef. This has a number of advantages, including the higher ?basket price? for UG2 concentrate, reduced mining cost per unit volume as a result of the higher density of UG2, and the reduction in overall concentrate tonnage to be smelted. In many cases the Merensky ore has been fully exploited and it makes sense for the focus to shift to the UG2 ore that can be accessed through the Merensky shaft infrastructure. The presence of relatively high levels of chromite in UG2 concentrate is, however, a major disadvantage due to the problems associated with smelting such a concentrate in conventional submerged arc furnaces. In addition to increasing the specification on the minimum PGM grade of concentrates, smelters have had to impose strict specifications on the levels of chromite in the concentrate. The threat of high penalties has forced concentrators to change their modus operandi, often resulting in a significant loss in recovery. The final concentrate grades and PGM recoveries are shown to vary significantly throughout the industry. The reasons for this include varying ore mineralogy and different operating philosophies. This would therefore imply that the opportunity exists to optimize the operations by considering fundamental aspects such as the PGM mineralogy and the application of appropriate technologies. By returning to the fundamentals of flotation and applying the findings of detailed process reviews, it has been possible to increase the concentrate PGM grade, reduce the concentrate chromite grade, and in some cases increase the recovery of PGM to concentrate. This paper presents case studies where this approach has been used to successfully optimize concentrator performance, resulting in lower operating cost and higher PGM production. Since the dismal performance of the Rand Mines management was called to account by its shareholders in 1994, the waves of change have continued to ripple across the South African mining industry .The number of listings on the gold board of the Johannesburg Stock Exchange, that once numbered 40 or 50-odd, have now dwindled to no more than a handful as unprecedented restructuring has taken place. The redefining of the industry has not been limited to the gold sector, but across the base metal, coal, diamond, platinum and industrial mineral sectors as well. At the same time the Mining Houses began to reconsider their funding strategies. Originally established in the early part of the century to ensure the long-term sustainability of their group mining operations by providing substantial financial muscle and technical support, the Mining Houses were faced with a rapidly changing political environment, which proved to be a critical catalyst in giving momentum to the change. Furthermore, the significant development costs and increasing risk profile for new projects, coupled with pressure from shareholders demanding respectable returns, opened the door to opportunities for banks to begin providing external debt by the way of project finance. However, the provision of long-term debt to the South African mining industry had generally not been common since mining companies had financed new projects with equity, or with the cash flows from existing operations. Those banks that had the appetite for exposure to the perceived high risks of the mining sector rapidly built up specialist resource banking divisions capable of addressing the increasing demands of the industry. The application of project finance, the principles of which were developed in the 1970s specifically for infrastructure projects and privatization, is now commonly applied in the financing of greenfield and brownfield mining projects. This paper outlines the approach that lending banks would typically adopt when arranging or providing mining project finance, their usual areas of concern and the way in which the finance is structured to mitigate the many inherent risks.

The effect of composition on electrical conductivity (resistivity), viscosity and liquidus temperature of the slags encountered in electric smelting of PGM-containing suphide concentrates is reviewed along with the relationsip between slag composition, slag-matte separation and metal losses to slag. Optimization of slag composition at furnace temperature is attempted on the basis of opposite and parabolic trends of the viscosity-conductivity relationships of the slags. The importance of surface tension of slags is emphasized using available and estimated information, which are grouped into a useful correlation. These values are coupled with or incorporated into slag viscosity plots to illustrate the correlation between the two factors which influence slag-matte separation as well as refractory attack. The electrode in the slag-resistance furnace is the central factor in the design and operation of the furnace by its role of conveying the smelting power. The obvious parameters are the size and positioning in the slag bath, which are defined by slag resistivity, furnace resistance, cell constant and power input. The flow of heat generated by the electrode current determines the energy distribution and furnace dimensions creating viscosity profiles, which in turn affect flow conditions. Thus the flow of slag and matte isdiscussed in conjunction with the furnace geometry, stirring action of the electrodes, buoyancy and electromagnetic effects. The action of the electric furnace as a settler is discussed. The rectangular furnace is considered as a channel reactor in this analysis and the action of the electrodes is described to indicate a balanced settling rate in the area of electrode action. Discussion of the design and production capacity of the electric furnace with reference to operating current, power input, furnace dimensions and electrode size are based on considerations derived mainly from slag properties such as its resistivity, viscosity and liquidus temperature.

Publications on hard rock tunnel support design in the South African mining industry have originated primarily from the goldmines during the past 50 years. Little has been published to date on the platinum and chrome mines of the Bushveld Complex. This paper covers the search for a suitable design methodology for off-reef tunnels at Impala Platinum Mine, situated on the Western Lobe of the Bushveld Complex. The fall of ground accident statistics for off-reef excavations of the mine are presented and the available rock mass quality evaluation systems are reviewed. The Q-Tunnelling Quality Index (or Q-Index) is selected because it assesses the important driving factors behind falls of ground at Impala. Two off-reef excavations are evaluated using the Q-Index, and it is shown that minor modifications are required for implementation at Impala. It will take some time before support design throughout the mine is based on the outcome of proper geotechnical investigations based on the Q-Index. Widespread implementation of such support designs should help to solve the fall of ground problem in off-reef excavations while at the same time reducing support costs.

An overview is given of the matte melting process used for the beneficiation of South African Platinum Group Metal (PGM) ores. Most producers use six-electrode furnaces to melt the concentrate and Pierce Smith converters to oxidize excess iron sulphide from the furnace matte. Concentrates from two reef-types (the so-called Merensky and UG-2 reefs) dominate the feedstock supply. Concentrate from the Merensky reef is low in chromium and do not pose significant melting problems. Concentrates from the UG-2 reef contain much higher levels of chromium, which results in the formation of chromium-rich spinels during melting. This is attributed to the low solubility of chromium in furnace slag under typical operating conditions (an oxygen partial pressure of 10-8-10-9bar at temperatures of 1550°C to 1600°C). During the converting process care is needed to avoid excessively oxidizing conditions, which result in cobalt, nickel and copper losses to the slag. High nickel losses result in the formation ofFe2NiO4(trevorite), which often forms solid solutions with FeCr2O4and Fe3O4. In future, the main challenge in the processing of South African PGM ores will be to cope with ever increasing levels of chromium in the concentrate. A short-term solution to the problem would be to melt the concentrate under slightly reducing conditions to promote the formation of CrO, which is more soluble in the slag than Cr2O3. A longer-term solution to the problem would be to abandon the current matte-smelting process in favour of an alloy-based process, which would offer total flexibility with respect to the amount of chromium that can be tolerated in the feed. In general, overall experience has shown that the approach to the appointment of a project manager is given much attention, but little specific attention is given first to the risk associated with the project conceptual design and its overall executability within either the new legislative framework or the sustainability of the outcome. The risk in project executability and sustainability within the ?new age? legislative framework of the Mining Charter, etc, is itself however, of far greater importance. The degree of importance being defined by the intended projects impact on the business going forward. This is particularly the case where the intention of the implementation is effectively to turn around or even enhance a loss-making strategic investment like a mine or process plant operation in an ?old-order rights? or Brownfield?s operation. This paper attempts to highlight the importance of a ?pre-project project? (PPP) to mitigate the risk in the ?new age?, with specific reference to operational due diligence (ODD) and project conceptual design.

The authors developed the TBM Excavation Control System (the TBM Navigator), in order to realize the advanced observational construction. During the excavation using this system, the rock strength value is immediately calculated from the TBM driving data as an index of rock properties, and the drill energy coefficient is also calculated from the drill logging data that is carried out using the probe hole ahead of the tunnel face. In this study, a new, geostatistical simulation-based method is proposed for the automatic prediction of the rock properties ahead of the tunnel face with good precision, using both the drill logging data and the TBM driving data. The applicability of this method is validated through the prediction at the actual tunnel excavation that passes through the faults. Les auteurs ont mis au point un Système de Contrôle de forage avec la machine à pleine section (Navigateur de la machine à pleine section), en vue de réaliser un système de surveillance plus efficace. Avec ce système, la résistance de la roche est immédiatement calculée, au cours du forage, à partir des données de conduite de la machine, comme indice des propriétés de la roche, et le coefficient d'énergie de la foreuse est également calculé à partir des données de log de forage collectées dans un trou de sonde foré dans le front de taille. Dans cette étude, on propose une nouvelle méthode basée sur la simulation géostatistique qui permet de prévoir d’une manière automatique, des propriétés de roches se trouvant derrière le front de taille avec une précision satisfaisante, à l’aide des données de log de forage et celles de conduite de la machine à pleine section. Cette méthode s’est avérée suffisamment précise au cours du forage d’un tunnel réel qui traversait une zone de failles. Die Autoren entwickelten das TBM Ausschachtungssteuerungssystem (den TBM Navigator), um noch besser überwachte Bauarbeiten zu ermöglichen. Unter Einsatz dieses Systems wird die Gesteinsfestigkeit während der Ausschachtungsarbeiten unmittelbar aus den TBM Antriebsdaten als ein Index für die Gesteinseigenschaften berechnet. Gleichzeitig wird auch der Bohrenergiekoeffizient aus den Bohrlogdaten berechnet, die an Hand der Probebohrung am Stirnende des Tunnels erhalten wurden. In der vorliegenden Studie wurde ein neuartiges, auf geostatistischen Methoden basierendes Verfahren für die automatische und angemessen genaue Vorhersage der Gesteinseigenschaften am Stirnende des Tunnels vorgeschlagen, für das sowohl die Bohrlogdaten als auch die TBM Antriebsdaten verwendet werden. Die Anwendbarkeit dieser Methode wird durch die Vorhersage bei einer tatsächlichen, durch Verwerfungen verlaufenden Tunnelausschachtung bewiesen.

The dissolution of alumina and magnesia has been investigated using laser scanning confocal microscopy (alumina) and a rotating finger apparatus (magnesia) to assess the effects of temperature, composition and forced convection on the rate of dissolution in CaO-SiO2-Al2O3based slags. The two techniques have differing strengths and limitations, and provide complementary methods for studying dissolution. Alumina dissolution was studied for temperatures from 1477 to 1577°C. Based upon the data, the rate controlling mechanism was thought to be mass transfer control in the slag. The diffusion coefficients for the alumina particles are estimated to be in the range 10-11to 10-10m2.s. MgO degradation for sample rotation speeds of 50 to 800 rpm at 1500 and 1530°C was studied for both congruent and incongruent dissolution. The results show that the rate of dissolution for this is primarily controlled by a diffusion mass transfer mechanism for congruent dissolution except at the highest rotation speed. For incongruent dissolution, the mechanism is much more complex, with the morphology and distribution of the spinel reaction product having a significant effect. At high speeds and prolonged times, mechanical forces played a major role in the degradation process. The oxidation state dependence of the electrical conductivity of a calcium ferrite slag with 25 wt% CaO was measured at 1300°C using a shallow slag layer and two-electrode technique. The experiments were started in air and the slag was sequentially reduced by means of a controlled gas atmosphere using CO2and CO. The electrical conductivity in air was approximately 300 S/m and increased with reduction to approximately 1900 S/m at a pO2of 10-10atm. The interest in the oxidation state dependence of the conductivity of calcium ferrite slags was to provide a comparison with the conductivity of iron silicate slags and to establish the effect of slag basicity on the electrical conductivity and its oxidation state dependence. The results obtained are discussed in terms of the slag structural information available in the literature. The co-ordination of the ferric ions appears to play a large role in determining the electrical conductivity. Keywords: calcium ferrite, slags, electrical conductivity.

Ferroalloys like FeCr and FeMn are mostly produced in submerged electric arc furnaces. Typical for these processes is that the amount of slag is quite high. The role of slag for the process is thus very essential and specific chemical, physical and electrical properties are required. Slags in FeCr process are Al2O3-MgO-SiO2based with minor contents of CaO and CrOx. Slags in FeMn process are principally similar originating from silicate minerals but can have quite a large composition range depending on the manganese ore and its gangue minerals. Characteristic for FeMn process is that the slag is rich in manganese oxide up to above 30%. A common feature is that the ?ore oxides?, CrOx and MnOxin slag are not only divalent oxides but also containing some higher valent of Cr3+ and Mn3+, respectively. In FeMn production conditions the slag consists mainlyMn2+. This is a clear difference from CrOx containing slags in which both two and three valent coexists in slags in FeCr process conditions. Oxidation state of the slag depends on the ambient oxygen partial pressure and temperature in the examined process. Thermodynamics of slags in ferroalloys production are discussed in terms of phase diagrams, activities and oxidation state of chromium and manganese oxides. Further, slag properties influencing reduction kinetics and furnace operation i.e. viscosity and electrical resistivity are discussed. The processes by which particles and bubbles interact capture many of the central concepts of colloid science and hydrodynamics. This area of research embraces hydrodynamics, interfacial(including capillary) forces, particle and bubble behaviour and solution chemistry. In this review, we discuss collision, attachment and stability efficiencies. We deal with the identification of a flotation ?domain?, the deformation of a bubble surface upon interaction with a solid surface, the kinetics of three phase contact line expansion and the determination of attachment efficiencies through to the direct measurement of bubble-particle interaction forces. We have recently carried out a test of collision theory where the latter embraces both inertial and centrifugal forces. The real challenge is now to quantitatively describe the behaviour of real systems and to incorporate a reliable description of the behaviour of particles in flotation froths. The approach described is very robust when applied to flotation, both from qualitative and quantitative points of view, providing an intellectual foundation for understanding this complex process in separation science and technology.

The advent of low-quality export coal demand has brought a new range of possibilities to the South African coal industry. Products that traditionally were only of value to the domestic or combustion industry sectors now have the potential to be exported, with only minor amounts of upgrading required through beneficiation. Comparatively high steam-coal export prices can be obtained for lowquality export coal, which enhances the economic feasibility of expanding low-quality thermal coal exports. There are, however, increasing concerns about the feasibility of lower quality thermal coal exports and the broader implications. These concerns relate to the environmental impact of low-quality thermal coal production for export and the inherent threat to the security of domestic thermal coal supply in South Africa. Against this background, this paper serves to explain the extended value chain in the production of export coal. The technical and economic advantages and disadvantages of low-grade exports versus coal production for domestic use are evaluated. The value chain estimation is calculated by the beneficiation modelling and characterization of two coals. Based on the value estimation, the lowgrade export production scenario, and finally the modelling of potential pollutant distribution, are described. Nickel is recovered as a by-product of the platinum-producing process operated by Anglo Platinum. The metal is mined mainly as sulphide minerals contained in platinum ores. These pass through the concentrating, smelting and converting process route and nickel is finally recovered by electrowinning. Smelting of the concentrated ore in the electric furnace produces a melt with a high slag to matte ratio. The resulting furnace slag is granulated and later milled and floated to recover matte. A project was initiated to investigate the distribution of nickel in the slag in order to improve recovery. Slag samples were examined using a combination of chemical and mineralogical techniques. The granulated slag was found to consist mainly of a silicate glass phase, which reflects the composition of the molten slag in the furnace. Nickel occurs as free matte granules, as matte phases locked inside the glass, and in the glass phase itself. Whereas nickel in the matte is as sulphide, most of the nickel in the glass phase appears to be oxide- bound(i.e. in solid solution). Milled slag as flotation feed showed recovery-limiting features such as free matte with oxidized surfaces and unliberated matte inclusions in the slag. The biggest nickel losses, assuming no tapping problems, are in the glass phase solid solution. Only around 40% of nickel would be recovered from the slag, even under ideal conditions. Spoon and pot slag samples were also examined to see if casting and crushing would improve recovery. Although larger and therefore more easily recovered matte phases formed, nickel partitioned into crystalline silicate phases, limiting the maximum theoretical nickel recovery to 70%.
