The demand for rare earth elements (REE) is increasing rapidly owing to the emergence of new cleanenergy and defense-related technologies. China’s dominates the world production of REE. In this paper, we review the ore characteristics of four typical REE deposits in China and discuss the conventional beneficiation techniques, including gravity and magnetic separation, flotation, and hydrometallurgical processing of these ores. Some of the latest laboratory findings and industrial applications, as well as the development of novel reagents for REE processing in China are presented. The REE beneficiation technologies developed and employed in China could constitute a good case study for many other emerging projects being explored around the world.

The application of the Monte Carlo technique to production planning and everyday economic decisionmaking in mine production management is demonstrated. The logic is detailed using an example of underground production with continuous miners (CMs) and truck haulage. It is argued that availability of equipment and personnel are the predominant variables influencing mine output and productivity and that those availabilities may be well represented by binomial probability distributions. The probabilistic model is implemented in a standard Excel® spreadsheet with Palisade’s @Risk add-on to facilitate simulations. Starting from model calibration against data obtained from a mine’s annual reports, some general interdependencies of availability, utilization, productivity, and costs of production processes are outlined. Finally, several possible options and their consequences as regards production improvements are explored.

Although some of the platinum(II/IV) and rhodium(III) chemistry is considered ?old? and well-known, the application of modern multinuclear NMR spectroscopic methods to this chemistry in solution reveals new details about their rich and relevant solution chemistry. In this paper we will briefly illustrate that the highly-sensitive 195Pt NMR shielding is an excellent probe to explore aspects such as solvation, ion-pairing, and the hydrolysis chemistry of inter alia [PtCl6-n(H2O)n]n-2 (n=0-5). Moreover the novel use of 35Cl/37Cl and 18O isotopes effects as unique NMR ?fingerprints? leading to a new and unambiguous method of chemical speciation of the numerous possible PtII/IV and RhIII complexes present in halide-rich aqueous solutions. In the case of Rh(III) chemistry a new, direct speciation distribution diagram has been established for [RhCln(H2O)6-n]3-n complexes (n = 3-6) in HCl solution at 292 K with these methods.

In view of the limited reserves of good-quality coking coals in South Africa, Iscor has been involved in direct reduction since the middle sixties. Since the early seventies, its interest in direct reduction was stimulated further by a swing towards' continuous casting, which, in turn, contributed to a shortage of the scrap supply for electric-arc-furnace (EAP) steelmaking. A Special General Meeting of the Institute was held in Kelvin House, Johannesburg on Wednesday, 29th September, 1971. The President, Prof. D. D. Howat opened the meeting at 9.55 a.m. The President read the notice of meeting which was as follows: "In order to bring industry into closer liaison with the work of your Institute and to place the Institute's finances on a sound basis your Council recommends that companies be admitted to membership of the Institute under clause 2.6 of the Constitution, that is, as Non-Corporate members. The designation for this class of member will be that of "Company Affiliate". 2 Membership: This clause to be amended as follows:- 2.6 "Non-Corporate members shall comprise the grades of:- Company Affiliate Honorary Fellow Graduate Associate Student" 2.6.1 This clause to be added:- "Companies involved in or associated with the mining or metallurgical industries are eligible to become company affiliates" 2.14 Add:- "A special certificate shall be issued to all company affiliates". After giving the background to the recommendation made by Council the President asked for a proposer and seconder for the resolution. Mr J. K. E. Douglas proposed and Mr D. G. Maxwell seconded the resolution. The meeting agreed that the constitution be amended as proposed. The meeting closed as 10.05 a.m.

The effect of mineralogy on the grindability was investigated using three copper ores – two sulphides and one oxide. The dominant copper minerals were identified by optical microscopy and mineral chemistry derived from SEM-EDS analysis. The sample designated sulphide 1 was borniterich, sulphide 2 ore was mainly chalcopyrite, and the oxide ore was predominantly malachite and minor azurite. The gangue minerals were identified using semi-qualitative XRD analysis. Sulphide 1 contained more than 80% (w/w) of quartz compared to about 70% in the other two ores. The Bond work indices were 13.8, 21.6, and 17.3 kWh/t for sulphide 1, sulphide 2, and oxide ore respectively. This suggested that the chalcopyrite-rich ore is the hardest, while the malachite-rich ore has intermediate hardness, and the bornite-rich ore is the softest. The brittleness indices of the ores were calculated using the chemical composition of the gangue, and a good correlation between brittleness indices and Bond work indices was observed, which highlights the importance of the gangue composition in determining the fracture behaviour of the ores. There is scope for further investigation into the relationship between ore mineralogy and comminution behaviour using other breakage characterization techniques.

Published information is available on the radiological impacts of disposing of zircon sand in a landfill. Zircon flour by virtue of its finer particle size presents a different set of issues during disposal. This paper describes two options for disposal of such fine grained materials – namely incorporation into concrete aggregates and agglomeration by addition of cement. The study considers the radiological exposure of the public from such disposal methods and concludes that these options are viable alternatives for the safe disposal of waste zircon flour. The disposal of zircon into concrete aggregates at a rate of 10 per cent produces a sufficiently low effect to allow such aggregates to be used in building foundations or other such mass concrete applications. The use of cement agglomeration methods will also provide a safe method of landfill disposal provided at least 20 cm of soil cover is included.

In the challenging environments of deep-level, narrow tabular orebody gold mines in South Africa, rock mass classification offers a potential method for predicting hazardous areas and optimising rock support systems. This study evaluates the applicability of various rock mass classification systems, with a focus on the Modified or Mining Rock Mass Rating system tailored for high-stress, deep-level mining conditions. Extensive data collection was conducted at Kusasalethu Mine, involving underground mapping and analysis of the 2020/2021 fall of ground database. The Mining Rock Mass Rating system was adapted to the unique geological and operational conditions, providing a simplified, user-friendly approach for rock engineering and geology personnel. Results indicate that this adapted Mining Rock Mass Rating system effectively quantifies rock mass conditions and influences proactive mining adjustments. The study’s findings highlight the system's capability to enhance understanding of rock mass behaviour and substantially mitigate the occurrence of rockfalls and ground collapses. Further application and refinement of the system are recommended to continuously improve mining safety and efficiency.

"The critical importance of tap-hole design and management for furnace performance and longevity is explored through examining some of the specific matte, metal, and slag tapping requirements of non-ferrous copper blister and matte converting and smelting, ferroalloy smelting, and ironmaking systems. Process conditions and productivity requirements and their influence on tapping are reviewed for these different pyrometallurgical systems. Some critical aspects of the evolution of tap-hole design to meet the diverging process and tapping duties are examined. Differences and similarities in tapping practices and tap-hole management are reviewed. Finally, core aspects of tap-hole equipment and maintenance are identified – aspects that are considered important for securing improved tap-hole performance and life, so pivotal to superior furnace smelting performance. IntroductionThe sheer diversity of tapping configurations used on industrial pyrometallurgical operations is at first bewildering. They range from historical tilting furnaces without tapholes to modern eccentric bottom tapping (EBT) tilting and/or bottom slide-gate electric arc furnaces; to classical single tap-hole multiphase tapping (e.g. metal/matte and slag); to dedicated phase tap-holes (e.g. dedicated metal/matte-only and slag-only); to dedicated phase multiple tap-hole configurations (up to eight metal/matte-only tap-holes and six slag-only tap-holes); to more esoteric metal/matte-only siphons and slag overflow skimming, e.g. Mitsubishi Continuous Process (Matsutani, n.d.). This can be further complicated by periodic batch tapping; consecutive tapping on a given taphole; alternating tap-hole tapping practice; near-continuous slag-only tapping, with discrete batch matte/metal tapping on higher productivity, but low metal/matte fall (<20% by mass feed) Co and Ni ferroalloy and platinum group metal (PGM) matte furnaces; near-continuous tapping through batch tapping of individual tap-holes that are opened consecutively (Tanzil et al., 2001; Post et al., 2003); to fully continuous tapping on coupled multi-furnace cascades (Matsutani, n.d.)."

Modelling stockpiles is a key factor of a project’s economics and operation in mining, because not all the mined ores are not able to mill for many reasons. Furthermore, the financial value of the ore in the stockpile needs to be reflected on the balance sheet. Therefore, automatically tracking the boundaries of the stockpile facilitates the mine scheduling engineers to calculate the tonnage of the ore remaining in the stockpile. This paper suggests how the dynamic of stockpile shape changes caused by dumping and reclaiming operations can be inferred using polygon models. The paper also demonstrates how the geometry of stockpiles can be inferred in the absence of reclaimed bucket information, in which case the reclaim polygons are established using the digger’s global positioning system (GPS) positional data at the time of truck loading. This work further compares two polygon models for creating 2D shapes.

The South African Institute of Mining and Metallurgy hosted a School on &apos;The Practical Design of Comminution Processes&apos; at Megawatt Park (near Johannesburg) on 14th to 16th May, 1991 Derek Barratt, a Senior Consultant of Wright Engineers, Canada, and the main speaker, provided a good insight into how Wright Engineers design milling circuits, particularly large semi-autogenous mills. He was ably assisted by Jens Lichterof Allis Mineral Systems, who described some interesting examples of pilot-plant testwork and summarized South African milling practice. Mike Moys of the Witwatersrand University spoke on the influence of pulp viscosity on mill performance, and Johan Engelbrecht and Jeremy Bosman of Multotech

One of the most challenging aspects in semi-mobile in-pit crushing and conveying (SMIPCC) system design is determining the optimum depth at which to change from a purely truck-based haulage system to a conveyor-based haulage system. We used scenario analysis to determine the optimum transition depth between a truck and shovel (TS) system and a SMIPCC system. Traditional pit-limit algorithms were used to generate the final pit limit on a copper deposit, which was then divided into four pushbacks. The final operating pushbacks (phases) were designed for both TS and SMIPCC. The end depths for each phase are viewed as candidate transition points to switch from the TS to SMIPCC haulage system. Economic calculations were applied for five different scenarios, including adopting SMIPCC from the outset (pure SMIPCC), after the first, second, and third phases, and finally not using the SMIPCC system (pure TS) at all. The analysis indicates that the second scenario, at a depth of 335 m, results in the lowest cumulative discounted cost (CDC). In this case, the CDC is 17.6% lower than that for the pure TS scenario and 10.7% lower than for the pure SMIPCC system scenario.

This paper describes mining industry funded research that is being undertaken to address the critical gaps and uncertainties in our knowledge so that we can develop new approaches and create more effective ways for predicting the reliability of rock slopes in large open pit mines. It is envisaged that this research will not only lead to more effective pit slope design but further reduce the potential for unforseen geotechnical risks by enabling the geotechnician to communicate the risks more effectively with management and to optimise site specific control measures. To achieve this, several research tasks are in hand. The first is to accurately represent the structured rock mass with a 3D computer model (Siromodel) that creates polyhedral blocks from structural distribution data characterised by position, orientation and persistence. Siromodel is being coupled with particle flow and other numerical codes to evaluate how the structured rock mass deforms in the stress environment of an open pit and how a candidate failure surface may propagate through the dilating rock mass along the path of the least shear and/or tension resistance. A beta version of the Siromodel software has been distributed to 20 Sponsor mine sites for technical evaluation. The end state is to develop methods of analysis that characterise the reliability of a described candidate surface, and the probability of the candidate surface propagating to failure, recognising that the rock mass strength may well be defined in a different way than before.

This paper presents the results of a study focussed on determining the distribution of cobalt in different types of pyrite of the La Estrella IOCG deposit in Chile. In the IOCG mineral deposits, where copper is the main product, the quantification and distribution of cobalt is required to correctly define the technical and economic viability of recovering cobalt as a by-product. In the La Estrella mineral deposit, seven alteration and mineralisation events were recognised through both optical and automated electronic mineralogical analysis. Of these seven events, five different types of pyrites were identified, each with unique characteristics of the pyrite crystals. Through advanced elemental analysis of these five types of pyrites, it was determined that the concentration and distribution of cobalt within the pyrite crystal is dependent on the mineralisation event. The results indicate high cobalt concentrations in the early pyrite mineralisation events, associated with relatively fine pyrite grains, and cobalt generally occurring in a solid form in the pyrite core. The late pyrite mineralisation event exhibits the lowest concentrations of cobalt, with cobalt predominantly present along the outer periphery of the pyrite. These results are relevant from a metallurgical point of view because the preferential location of cobalt within the pyrite crystal will influence the maximum metallurgical recovery of cobalt. For this, a cobaltiferous pyrite concentrate must be formed which, according to the characteristics of pyrite, must be processed with the optimal solubilisation method. The overall objective is to ensure both good cobalt recovery and a high concentration of cobalt in the leach solution resulting from pyrite leaching. Mr Janisch&apos; s comment&apos; in the August issue on Dick Stacey&apos;s remarks about safety factors indeed requires wider debate. The example he quoted to illustrate the successful application of the safety factor concept in coal mining, namely the Salamon formula, is to my knowledge the only recognized application of that concept. Not only that, but that particular formula should be used only for what it was intended, namely to prevent major disasters. It was never intended to indicate long-term pillar stability, and it should not be used for that.

I had the good fortune to attend the above Conference which was held in Kanpur, India, on 11-15 December, 1995. The Conference was held in honour of Professor P.C. Kapur of the Indian Institute of Technology in Kanpur. Professor Kapur was one of the early students of legendary teacher and researcher of mineral beneficiation, Professor Doug Fuerstenau of the Department of Materials Science and Engineering at the University of California at Berkeley. I have attended my fair share of international conferences and this one certainly rated at the top of the list on several counts. With an open-hearted hospitality which one might almost take for granted once you have spent some time in India, the organizers of the Conference looked after every need of their guests, including breakfast and transport to and from the conference centre, wonderful traditional lunches and dinners and outstanding entertainment in the evenings. The papers were generally of a high standard, and debate flowed enthusiastically and freely. Several international guests delivered seminal papers in their fields as discussed below.

ABSTRACT : Rock mass classifications RMR, Q and GSI do not suggest decreasing modulus ratio with the decrease in the quality of rock. These have been linked to joint factor, Jf , for better prediction. An engineering classification is suggested based on strength and modulus applicable to both intact and jointed rocks. ZUSAMMENFASSUNG : Fels Masse Klassifizierungen RMR, schlägt Q und GSI daß das Abnehmen von modulus Verhältnis mit der Abnahme in der Qualität des Felsen nicht vor. Diese sind zu gemeinschaftlichem Faktor, Jf, für bessere Voraussage verknüpft worden. Eine technische Klassifizierung wird auf der Basis auf Kraft und modulus vorgeschlagen die zutreffend sind zu beiden unversehrten und jointed Felsen. RESUME: RMR de classifications de masse de Rocher, Q et GSI ne suggèrent pas la proportion de modulus décroissante avec la diminution dans la qualité de rocher. Ceux-ci ont été reliés au facteur de jointure, Jf, pour mieux la prédiction. Une classification construisant est suggérée basé sur la force et modulus applicables intacts et les rochers de jointed.

Ores are becoming extremely variable with mineralogy and hardness disturbing the grinding and flotation circuits. The current grinding and flotation sensors provide large amounts of data for process optimisation. Adding the right context and operational events augments operational knowledge for proactive actions to improve the performance of the grinding and flotation circuits. A data-driven strategy is needed to enable operations, maintenance, and business personnel to quickly and easily take corrective action when abnormal conditions occur. A digital plant template transforms data into operational insights in real-time. It uncovers the hidden, idle and downtime losses. By measuring and managing these unproductive times, people find new ways of avoiding them, improving the profitability of the plant. The information created by the real time analytics enables the calculation of recovery in real time and develops predictive analytics models to find the best operating condition based on the type of ore currently mined. The creation of new workflows and collaboration between mining and concentrator plant and the enterprise, including services providers, are enabled. A grade recovery model is used to identify the best operating conditions in real-time. An optimal Gaudin size distribution shape is used to find the grinding operating conditions that optimise the metal recovery in the rougher sections of the mineral processing plant. Sensors in the flotation circuits enable estimation of metal recovery and determine the optimal froth depth and aeration profiles, using an industrial air holdup flotation model. The implementation of a recovery/grind strategy with industrial examples in non-ferrous metal concentrator is presented in the paper. A three-day symposium on the production of clean steel organized by The South African Institute of Mining and Metallurgy, was held in September 1995 at Vanderbijlpark. It was attended by 151 delegates, who represented the whole of the steel industry in South Africa: Iscor Works, Saldanha Steel, Columbus Stainless, Highveld Steel & Vanadium, Iscor Research & Development, University of Pretoria, and Technikon Witwatersrand, as well as the users of steel products were represented. Professor Allan Cramb held the delegates attention with well-presented research and practical information. He obtained excellent interaction with the delegates by responding in depth to the questions put to him during the Symposium. In summary, he emphasized the following aspects of the elimination of defects during the processing of steel in continuously cast materials.
