Since 1990 and the publication of the Ergonomics Program Management Guidelines for Meatpacking Plants by the US Occupational Safety and Health Administration, numerous reports of companies implementing ergonomics program have been published. However, despite these numerous reports, no examples of implementing an ergonomics program in the mining industry have been reported. In 2000, NIOSH initiated a long-term project to demonstrate the implementation of an ergonomics process designed to identify and reduce exposures to ergonomic risk factors found in mining. The mine selected for this project was the Jim Bridger Mine, a surface coal mine located 35 miles northeast of Rock Springs, Sweetwater County, WY. This paper discusses how a large, surface coal mine implemented an ergonomics program and the lessons learned while doing so.

Although local conditions at each mining property affect the percentage of increase in drilling speed for a given reduction in gage of bit, the results of drilling tests conducted at the Mount Weather testing adit show such a large advantage in favor of the smaller gages that they should be indicative of the possibilities at most mines. GENERAL DISCUSSION Although it is common knowledge among miners that drilling speed increases with reduction in gage of bit, the large amount o this increase is not so universally realized, A recent Bureau of Mines4/ survey of drilling practices in 28 metal mines showed that the maximum gage of starters is 3 inches and that at 50 percent of the mines starters are 2-1/4 inches or larger, Because this size appears too large for conditions at most mines where abrasion is moderate and where powder distribution permits, the use of smaller bits presents a favorable opportunity for reducing drilling costs.

THE South Asian countries of India, Ceylon, Pakistan, Afghanistan, Nepal, Bhutan, and Sikkim have a large variety of mineral resources; however, in spite of mineral industry growth during 1964, development of resources remained far short of possible development, and, in terms of value of trade in minerals, the area remained a sizeable net importer. India's mineral industry is by far the most significant; its minerals production in 1964 accounted for more than 90 per cent of the total value of all minerals produced in the area. The total value of all minerals produced in South Asia in 1964 was only about 1 percent of the area's estimated gross national product of $55,125 million. Despite the rather small current contribution of minerals to the economy, development of mineral resources figures prominently in plans for the industrial development of the nations of this area.

The Bureau of Mines conducted drilling studies in the Pocahontas No. 3, the Pittsburgh, and a western coalbed to establish the gas migration characteristics for each. Gas pressures in the Pittsburgh coalbed were about 260 lb/in2 and in excess of 550 lb/in2 in the Pocahontas No. 3. Caving in drill holes prevented pressure measurements in the western coalbed. The Pittsburgh coalbed contained intersecting "clay veins" which formed gas pres- sure cells. Although these geological features hamper mining, they can be used to control the flow of methane into a mine working. Methane control techniques are proposed for the Pittsburgh and Pocahontas No. 3 coalbeds.

Exports of agricultural products, mostly coffee, continued to account for more than 90% of Burundi's foreign exchange revenue. The country's ban on commercial mining was lifted in 1987. Mining of peat for fuel, limestone for agriculture, and clay for insecticides continued as in previous years. At yearend, Burundi's external debt stood at almost $700 million.2 Amoco Burundi, a subsidiary of the Amoco Petroleum Co., drilled two exploration wells in northern Lake Tanganyika in 1987. No oil was found, but preliminary findings were encouraging enough that further seismic surveys and offshore and onshore drilling exploration were planned in 1988. Any oil or gas finds would have substantial impact on the Burundian economy because a major portion of the country's trade deficit was directly attributable to petroleum and gas imports. The Zaire Government agreed in June to let Amoco Burundi explore Zaire's side of Tanganyika using the same equipment and personnel being used in Burundi.

Enable prospective in situ leach mine operators to evaluate the economic potential of an ore body by using a user-friendly, computerized in situ copper oxide leach mining cost model. Background As part of its research on in situ leach mining technology, the Bureau of Mines produced a 5-volume contract report that mining companies can use to design an in situ mining operation for copper oxide deposits. Written for the Bureau by the Science Applications International Corporation (SAIC) in 1988, the generic design manual also contains a computerized cost model for evaluating the economic feasibility of in situ leach mining for any specific copper oxide deposit. The cost model is to be used with Volume II of the contract report. But because of certain complexities associated with running it, the Bureau found that the model could be improved by making it more user friendly. Approach The approach taken by Bureau researchers to make the original model more user friendly was to incorporate a HELP function to define input parameters, and to enable the display of output on the monitor. An accompanying handbook, U.S. Bureau of Mines Information Circular (IC) 9284, contains further details on running, the 1990 model.

Bureau of Mines laboratory tests show that ilmenite concentrates with titanium dioxide contents as low as 33 wt--pct can be beneficiated to produce a crystalline substitute for natural rutile suitable for direct chlorination. The synthesized product prepared by a three-step procedure was comparable with natural rutile in titanium content. Reduction smelting of ilmenite removes iron as a pig iron byproduct, and the remaining slag phase is greatly enriched in titanium. Oxidation of the slag in the presence of phosphorus¬bearing slag additive converts the titanium-bearing phases to discrete rutile crystals and a glass phase containing most of the associated impurities. Rutile is separated from the glassy impurities by attrition scrubbing ground slag in dilute phosphoric or sulfuric acid solutions. Tests made in a laboratory fluid-bed reactor show that synthetic rutile responds to chlorination at the same rate as natural rutile and that more than 95 pct of the titanium contained in the feedstock was extracted as titanium tetrachloride.

In August 1984 the U.S. Bureau of Mines conducted a study of the mineral resource development potential of the Badger Canyon-Antelope Creek area, within the Boulder-Pioneer wilderness study area, about 5 miles northeast of Ketchum, 10. The purpose of this study was to investigate in greater detail an area which was designated by the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) and the Bureau as having a moderate mineral resource potential for zinc, molybdenum, lead, and silver, and a low potential for copper. One hundred twenty-eight soil samples were taken along a 6,2S0-ft traverse on the ridge separating Badger Canyon and Antelope Creek. 5 Five rock samples were collected from old prospect pits and mineralized outcrops. All samples were analyzed for gold. Silver, copper, lead, zinc, molybdenum, arsenic, antimony, vanadium, and mercury. The metal concentrations in the soil samples along the traverse are irregularly distributed. Samples collected near old prospect pits tend to be high in lead and zinc, undoubtedly a reflection of underlying galena-and sphalerite-bearing quartz veins. All of the copper and mercury values in the soils are less than the detection limit, as are most of the lead, molybdenum, and antimony values. Except for lead and zinc values, the metal concentrations in the rock samples are low. Galena and sphalerite were observed in quartz vein samples collected at the old prospects. The results of the study indicate that the galena-sphalerite-bearing quartz veins and veinlets are too narrow, widely-spaced, and low in metal values to be economic. Low concentrations of metals in the soil and rock samples, combined with the lack of major mining activity in the past, indicate that the area has a low likelihood for economic development.

Control dust generated during overburden drilling at surface coal mines using either wet suppression or dry collection systems. Approach For the wet suppression systems, a range of water flow rates was tested over a number of holes. Each hole was drilled at a specific and constant flow rate. A recording flow meter was mounted in the water line near the control system pump. For the dry collection systems, each drill was tested with the front of the shroud set at different heights above the ground. Because of the irregularity of the ground surface, all height measurements were taken at the front of the shroud. Background Wet drilling systems consist of a water tank mounted on the drill from which water is pumped into the downhole air line. The water droplets in the bail air conglomerate dust particles as they travel up the the annular space of the drilled hole, thus controlling dust as the air bails the cuttings from the hole.

To develop technology to help assure an ample domestic supply of zinc, the Bureau of Mines is investigating an aqueous chlorine-oxygen leaching process for treating complex sulfide concentrates. This report discusses the purification of aqueous C12-02 leaching solutions by utilizing zinc cementation to remove Cd, Co, Cu, Ni, and Pb. Additional processing of the purified solution is necessary to produce ZnC12 crystals suitable for molten-salt zinc electrowinning cells. The effects of solution temperature, reaction time, zinc dust concentration, ZnCl2 concentration, and degree of agitation on the removal of impurities were investigated for both simulated and actual leaching solutions. Zinc dust addition to a leaching solution at 30° C decreased the Cd, Cu, Ni, and Pb concentrations to acceptable levels of less than 3 mg/1 each. By increasing the solution temperature to 75° C, the cobalt content was decreased to less than 5 mg/l, an acceptable level for producing electrolytic cell-grade ZnC12. Impurity removal rates from ZnCl2 solutions are Pb>Cu=Cd>Ni>>Co. An increase in the solution temperature increases the rate of removal for these metal impurities.

Titanium is a well-known component of bauxite ores, sometimes occurring in sufficient quantity to mace its recovery worth considering. This question has been raised by some of the companies lixiviating bauxite ores. At the East St. Louis plant of the Aluminum Ore Co., a subsidiary of the Aluminum Co. of America, the waste sludge discharged daily contains over 75,000 pounds of Ti02. The sludge is all through 20-mesh, and a large proportion is slime. A supple of the waste was deslimed so that a gravity-concentration test of the "sand" could be made. The Aluminum Ore Co. cooperated in the work and made the chemical determinations In order to anticipate the results of table concentration a series of specific gravity fractions (float-and-sink) was made with heavy liquids. Acetylene tetrabromide was used for a density of 2.95, methylene iodide for 3.33, and thallium formate for 3.78, and the double salt of thallium formate-malonate made the separation at slimed sample appears in Table 1.

To a greater or lesser extent, the economies of the smaller Caribbean Island countries continued to have common problems. These included unemployment, inflation, foreign exchange shortages, trade deficits, and unstable world prices for their exports. Declining prices for petroleum provided some relief from scarce foreign exchange. Overall, the mineral sector remained stable. The Amerada Hess Corp. crude oil transshipment terminal on St. Lucia was completed during 1981. However, there were no shipments during the year. No official reason was offered for the delay in opening the terminal, but it may have been related to the world surplus of crude oil that occurred in 1981. There has been no further action on the refinery, which was to complete the island's petroleum complex. During the first half of 1981, an announcement was made that a second oil transshipment terminal would be built on St. Lucia. The report indicated that the terminal was to be financed by Saudi Arabia and include underground storage. After the original announcement, no further information was made available. This terminal, like the Hess petroleum complex, may have been temporarily postponed because of the crude oil surplus.

The potential for roof fails in underground mines remains a clear and present danger for mine workers An investigation of ground conditions in nearly 50 percent of the nation’s underground stone mines fold that the slate of roof stability is primarily determined in a limited and subjective manner. These large-opening mines with roof heights typically 7 m (23 ft) or more, make physical observation difficult. Although some mines use monitoring techniques to gain additional information an roof stability, this practice is usually short term and localized to address ground conditions in a particular section or part of the mine. A roof-fall hazard-assessment techniques was development based on engineering judgment acquired from extensive underground stone mine experience and on exanimation of the related literature. This technique utilizes observational processes to determine roof fall likelihood Case-study scenarios offer a realistic picture of model implementation. Providing the mine level decision-maker with an accurate assessment tool to ascertain the level of ground fall hazards is expected to reduce mint worker injuries and fatalities Moreover; the presences of danger can be overcome with a clear picture of quantified ground conditions.

The figures are on a mine basis, unless otherwise indicated, except for cement, coke, and steel, which are measured at the processing plant. The tables are essentially a retabulation, by countries, of the 53 commodity world tables appearing in the various chapters of this volume. For lack of comprehensive information, data for the following minerals are excluded: Andalusite, aplite, asphalt, boron, bromine, calcite (optical), calcium chloride (natural), carbon dioxide, clay, columbium (niobium), diatomite (kieselguhr), dumortierite, emery, garnet (abrasive), gem stones (other than diamonds), germanium, greensand, grindstones, helium, indium, iodine, kyanite, lithium, magnesium compounds (other than magnesite), meerschaum, mineral pigments, monazite, natural gas, natural gasoline, oil shale, olivine, perlite, pumice, quartz crystal, radium, sand and gravel, selenium, sillimanite, sodium salts (other than common salt), stone, strontium, sulfur (byproduct), tantalum, tellurium, thallium, topaz (industrial), tripoli) uranium, vermiculite, wollastonite, and zirconium. In addition, a few minor geographic areas for which no statistics are available, are also omitted from the tabulation; it is believed that no significant quantities of minerals are mined in any of these areas. The statistics in these tables were derived principally from questionnaires sent, in cooperation with the United States Department of State, to the governments of each country. The cost of reclamation can vary widely, depending on the primary objectives of the restoration activities. statistics in this study originated from State files, publications, and personal communications relating to restoration and pollution control measures for previously mined lands (orphan lands) and active mines. Reclamation of orphan lands is generally considered a public burden and constitutes an economic problem. All work reported here was completed under government contract, by the lowest bidder, with money coming from State and/or Federal funds. Cost would have been substantially lower had the reclamation been concurrent with mining. Several persons connected with some of the projects have observed that costs could probably be reduced by at least one half, if the reclamation had been conducted along with the mining. The expense of clearing and grubbing of volunteer vegetation, disposal of buried trees and brush, loosing of compacted spoil, and re-establishing access to areas could be saved. In addition, a contracting firm doing the work for a government agency would have mobilization costs and receive a profit. Mining companies also are profit conscious and would consider these costs in anticipating their profits (e.g., overhead would be less if reclamation is integrated with mining). The data presented here should serve as a guide for estimating and determining cost ranges, however, it should be recognized that variations exist. Adjustments may be necessary from the standpoint of physical conditions, economic conditions, price changes, and more restrictive requirements of recent surface mining laws. Reclamation conditions, procedures and successes in the eastern United States, particularly in Appalachia, have no bearing on conditions to be expected in the western United States. The situations are wholly different. Reclamation in the West differs from th t in the East, primarily because of aridity especially a during the summer months 1). Because of the many variables and differences between reclamation in eastern and western areas, they will be discussed separately.

"INTRODUCTION One of the major activities of the Bureau of Mines is the promotion of safety in mining and the mineral industries. Research is undertaken in connection with these problems to determine the explosion and ignition hazards of combustible gases, liquids, and solids and to investigate means of reducing them.Occasionally the Bureau is asked to determine inflammability or ignition temperatures to enhance safety in nonrnineral industries. From time to time it has complied with such requests when no other agency was available to do the work and the investigation could be conducted with a minimum of time and expense. The present investigation is one of this class.Nicotine (C10H14N2), a colorless combustible liquid having a boiling point of 246°C, is usually obtained from tobacco and its products by extraction processes. When heated to its boiling point it decomposes; the purified product is obtained from tobacco extractions by distillation at reduced pressures or is distilled in a current of inert gas.It has an unpleasant odor, a burning taste, and in the undiluted state is highly toxic. Under certain conditions it can be oxidised to nicotinic acid and in the near future may therefore become of considerable economic importance. Nicotinic acid is a component of the vitamin B complex now commonly used to fortify white flour and other foods that normally are deficient in these vitamins."

Provide a method for obtaining in situ measurements of coal cutting forces which are needed for mining machine design. Approach A portable in-seam testing device is carried to the face of an underground coal mine heading to measure the cut-ting force encountered by a continuous miner pick directly at its maximum depth of cut. How It Works The tester frame is attached directly to the coal surface with four one inch diameter threaded studs resin-bolted into 1-1/4 inch diameter holes which are drilled 30 inches deep. Spherical nuts and washers compensate for misalignment between the bolts bearing plate, and traverse beams. Spacers can be placed over the studs to assure that the traverse beams remain in the same plane. The development of the Sevier Valley Coal Co.'s mine marks the opening of the Salina Canon coal district in Utah. The mine is favorably located with respect, to the existing markets of the West, and if the present estimates of the amount of workable coal in it are accurate it has many Important advantages in favor of its development. This mine is situated 18 miles east of the town of Salina, Sevier County, Utah, which at present is the nearest shipping point oh the Marysvale branch of the Denver & Rio Grande Western Railroad, and is about 152 miles south of Salt Lake City, which is the distributing center for much of the coal from the Carbon - Emery coal field and is the place from which nearly all Utah coal shipped to San Francisco and points on the northern Pacific coast has a common haul.

Provide coal mine shafts/slopes with an optimum coal mine shaft fire and smoke protection system composed of reasonably-priced, reliable hardware. Approach Accident and injury data indicate that a relatively low percentage (5%) of underground coal mine fires occur in shafts or slopes. Nevertheless, shaft or slope fires are extremely serious because they block critical escape routes for miners. That also can happen when combustion products resulting from fires in other mine areas contaminate shahs and slopes. Seeking the optimum configuration for a shaft/slope fire and smoke protection systems, the Bureau of Mines gathered data on the performance of existing fire detection devices and signal telemetry systems In several mines, and analyzed the generic protection needs of the U.S. underground coal mining industry. The optimum system developed by the Bureau provided an adequate number of detectors, a wide area of coverage, and an extensive data acquisition, analysis, display, and storage capability. This system. recommended for fabrication and in-mine testing, consisted of a microcomputer-controlled master panel located in the test mine's slope hoist room, and four remote units. Two of the remote units were placed on the surface atop upcast ventilation shafts, a third was situated underground near the slope bottom, and a fourth was installed at the slope top in intake air.

Solvent extraction separation of light group rare-earth elements in a quaternary ammonium compound-chelating agent system was demonstrated in single-stage studies, Typical separation factor values obtained were 93 for lanthanum-praseodymium, 5.4 for praseodymium-neodymium, and 11.6 for neodymium-samarium. These values are significantly higher than those obtained using organophosphate extractants. Further studies in a 20-stage countercurrent mixer-settler resulted in the production of 99 percent lanthanum (oxide basis) at 96-percent recovery. Subsequently, 88 percent of the neodymium with a purity of 92 percent was recovered in the raffinate.
