A removable-jacket distortion apparatus was constructed and used to measure distortion coefficients for two high-pressure vessels. The measured distortion coefficients were used to compute distortion coefficients for volumes VI and (V1+V2) of a 1,000-atmosphere Burnett compressibility apparatus for the temperature range 0° to 75° C. Young?s modulus for Armco 17-4 PH stainless steel, heat treated to condition H1150-M, was computed from experimentally determined distortion coefficients. A 10-to 14-percent correction to the values obtained for Young's modulus may be required because pressure vessel end effects were neglected. The distortion coefficients of the compressibility apparatus are believed to be accurate to about 1 percent.

The Bureau of Mines developed a radiotracer method for detecting the contribution of selected components and additives to thermally induce deposits of turbine aircraft fuels. Fuels were examined before and after 52 weeks of storage at 130° F. Of particular concern was the influence of aromatic hydrocarbon fuel constituents on thermal-stability quality of jet fuels during storage. A microfuel coker test apparatus was used to thermally stress the test fuels and blends, and the resultant contribution to deposits of selected fuel components, labeled with carbon-14, was determined by radioactive-counting techniques. Ninety-one blends of five test fuels with carbon-14-labeled fuel additives or components were prepared, tested, stored for 52 weeks at 130° F, and reanalyzed for deposit-forming tendency. These additives included two anti-oxidants, a metal deactivator, and a corrosion inhibitor. Of the labeled hydrocarbon fuel systems studied, the greatest reaction was observed in blends containing methyl-and ethyl-substituted indenes. Other aromatic types also showed some contribution to the deposits. Three of the additives showed a marked tendency to degrade and react during storage and thermal stress. A cresol antioxidant, however, barely contributed to deposit formation. Oleic acid interacted with cadmium present in aircraft fuel systems and produced deleterious effects upon the thermal-stability quality of the fuel.

The Bureau of Mines started a continuing program to investigate and evaluate analytical techniques to assist governmental agencies to select simple, rapid, reliable methods for crude oil spill identification. Six crude oil samples were analyzed to evaluate gas-liquid chromatography, atomic absorption spectrophotometry, infrared spectoscopy, sulfur and nitrogren determinations, mass spectrometry, nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy, and ultraviolet spectrophotometry. Samples were studied from the following selected fields: El Morgan, Egypt; Duri, Indonesia; Minagish, Kuwait; Bachaquero, Venezuela; Gach Saran, Iran; and Prudhoe Bay, Alaska. These samples were chosen to represent high-production fields that are likely to be involved in oceanic transport. Over 50 years of Bureau of Mines analytical research on petroleum served as the basis for evaluation of the experimental results to determine which of the methods are effective techniques to identify crude oil spills. Gas-liquid chromatographic analysis, atomic absorption spectrophotometric analysis, and sulfur-nitrogen determinations are recommended as the most useful of the techniques investigated.

The Bureau of Mines investigated the flotation responses of two copper-nickel ore samples from the Duluth Complex with the objective of recovering bulk sulfide concentrates. One of the ores studied was taken from a test pit; the other was taken from a test shaft. The samples were quite similar except that the pit sample analyzed 0.35 pct Cu and 0.11 pct Ni and the shaft sample analyzed 0.69 pct Cu and 0.14 pct Ni. Flotation responses were studied in both laboratory and pilot plant tests. Pilot plant flotation responses were similar for both samples resulting in grades of 12.2 pct Cu and 2.5 pct Ni for the pit sample and 12.2 pct Cu and 2.1 pct Ni for the shaft sample. Weight recoveries were 2.5 pct for the pit sample and 5.2 pct for the shaft sample. Copper and nickel recoveries for the pit sample were 87 and 62 pct, respectively, and 92 and 73 pct for the shaft sample. Both concentrates contained small but significant values of cobalt and precious metals. Cobalt recoveries were low--less than 40 pct for both concentrates. Precious metals contents of the concentrates were 1.59 oz/ton for the pit sample and 0.99 oz/ton for the shaft sample. Silver was the predominant precious metal by weight, but platinum and palladium represented the highest values.

The yielding-rock-bolt concept, as developed in South Africa, consists of a smooth-bore die or collar fitted to a standard rock bolt. Laboratory testing at the Bureau of Mines Spokane Mining Research Center under slow and fast strain rates showed that extrusion loads can be controlled by varying the configuration of the die bore and that theoretical analysis (using basically Sachs' theory of wire drawing) predicts extrusion loads of the different die-bore configurations. A derived equation, based on this research, can be used for designed die-thread combinations for any desired extrusion load. Dynamic loading resulted in slightly higher loads (15 percent) than static loading. The strain hardening effect, which increases yield and ultimate strength, was partly offset by adiabatic heating of the threads, which decreases strength.

Three types of communication systems have become popular in solving communication requirements underground: Loud-speaking pager phones, carrier current phones, and magneto ringing phones. Basically, all three are simply single-channel party line systems. Although these systems are quite reliable, the single channel creates a variety of problems. For example- 1. Since no call is confidential, messages are sometimes purposely made vague, especially if accidents or safety topics are being discussed. 2. A potential user must literally "wait in line" until the channel becomes clear for his use; thus, when foremen have to wait to call in reports or supply requests, this single chan-nel creates a serious productivity bottleneck. 3. In many large mines, there are independent branch lines that must be tied together by a dispatcher, adding further delays to the system. To solve these problems, some mines have installed other phone systems-mostly commercial dial phones in industrial enclosures that offer extra channel capacity and private line features. Others have installed a system that combines both dial- and page-phone features in a single unit. Although these do represent improvements, they do not truly solve the overall problems that face modern mines. Besides extra channels, a communication system should have the following features to enhance productivity and safety: 1. A means of paging a roving miner to alert him that he is wanted on the phone. 2. Wireless-to-wired system interconnects by which a miner can talk on the wired phone system by using a remote portable radio. 3. Remote monitors that alert personnel when there is a toxic or explosive gas buildup. 4. Control interfaces that allow remote control of fans, pumps, or other devices. 5. Transmitters and receivers that can serve as emergency links. 6. Loopback that allows an alternate path of communications if the main path is cut. This chapter focuses on equipment and methods to meet the special communication needs of individuals in various places of the underground mine. The communication requirements can be broken down into four categories: 1. The mine entrance (shaft communication). 2. Permanent and semipermanent locations (shop areas, lunchroom, crusher stations, etc.). 3. Mining areas (the room-and-pillar sections, longwall faces, block caving areas, etc.). 4. Haulageways (tracked trolley haulage, diesel, belt haulage). Methods of implementing systems to meet the communication needs of these areas are described in sections 3.2 through 3.5. Section 3.6 discusses methods of satisfying special communication requirements that exist. Major topics in this category include communications with roving personnel, the isolated miner, and motorman-to-snapper communications. Stability constants, that is, equilibrium constants for complex-formation reactions, have been determined by a titrimetric method for complexes formed by the transition metal ions Ni2+, Cu2+, Zn2+, and Cd2+ with the structurally analogous bidentate ligands N-ethylethylenediamine and 2-(ethylthio)-ethylamine. The sulfur containing ligand was found to be the weaker of the two chelating agents for each of the four metals. Absorption spectra of the individual complexes have been determined in order to calculate their crystal field stabilization energies. The combined results suggest a linear relation between free energy of chelation and ionic radius of the metal ion.

The 10-mm Dorr-Oliver cyclone has been widely used as a personal sampler for size selective sampling of particles within the respirable range (Dp < 10 gm). Because of their inertia, the particles are unable to follow the swirling flow (outer vortex) within the cyclone. The particles migrate to the bottom of the cyclone, depending on their size, and get trapped into the inner vortex which leads to an eventual blow-off from the top of the cyclone. By measuring the size distribution of the particles in the free stream and in the collected sample, the aspiration efficiency of the cyclone can be calculated. Velocity difference between the free stream and sampling velocity. Inlet orientation, particle impaction and deposition, particle inertia and free stream turbulence result in the departure of the aspiration efficiency from unity and this, in turn, leads to inlet bias. Although the effect of inlet bias on sampling efficiency has been investigated in past, the results lack detailed information and show only some general trend. In this effort, a systematic, in-depth experimental work on the effect of inlet bias on the sampling efficiency has been undertaken using non-intrusive Laser Doppler Anemometry (LDA), Aerodynamic Particle Sizer (APS) and impactors.

The types of compounds present in aromatic concentrates derived from high-boiling petroleum distillates can be estimated from a gel permeation chromato-graphic (GPC) analysis by the use of tables developed from extensive GPC and mass-spectral analyses on fractions from four crude oils. For a fraction from the GPC analysis, the retention volume and the molecular weights (from mass spectrometer) suffice to indicate the types of compounds which predominate. The tables which show these qualitative analyses were developed through the use of pure compounds as well as the extensive analyses on Prudhoe Bay (Alaska), Gach Saran (Iran), Swan Hills (Canada), and Wilmington (California) crude oils. These tables provide a rapid method for determining which types of compounds are present in a GPC fraction before attempting to develop quantitative data.

"This Bureau of Mines report contains a tabulation of methane emissions during 1980 for all coal mines located in the United States with emissions greater than 0.1 MMcfd. Listed for each mine are methane emission quantity, location, and coalbed. The report also compares records of 1975 and 1980 and describes relationships between emissions in 1980 and the Bureau's coalbed gas content data on 11 mines.INTRODUCTIONMethane gas is a threat to safety in underground coal mines. Research by Government and industry has led to great gains in reducing methane gas ignitions and explosions. The development of advanced methane control techniques is necessary for the safe operation of more gassy mines and the implementation of rapid mining techniques.As part of this research, the Bureau of Mines has surveyed total methane emission data from underground bituminous coal mines in the United States and tabulated emissions from mines producing over 0.1 MMcfd of methane. This report is an update of similar studies previously described in Information Circulars 8733, 8659, and 8558 (2-4).3The data from 1980 were compiled from Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) records of air quality-quantity inspections made quarterly at each mine. The inspections involve measuring airflow and collecting air samples in the main returns. From these data, an average methane emission is calculated and used to represent the daily mine emission for each quarter. The methane emissions given in this report are the averages of the four 1980 quarters and do not include mine emissions from other sources such as degasification projects. Since a previous Bureau study showed that emissions from mines emitting less than 0.1 MMcfd represented only 2 pct of all emissions, 0.1 MMcfd was chosen as a lower limit for data collection (4)."

The performance of Ecuador&apos;s mineral industry continued to be affected not only by depressed oil prices in recent years but also by natural disasters. In March 1987, Ecuador canceled foreign debt payments for the rest of the year and appealed for international aid because of a series of earth-quakes that destroyed villages and crippled the nation&apos;s oil industry. The earthquake destroyed a key section of the country&apos;s main oil pipeline and forced a halt to production and shipment of Ecuador&apos;s most important export product. Ecuador produces 240,000 barrels of oil per day and exports 144,000 barrels daily. Oil accounts for 60% of the nation&apos;s hard currency earnings. The Government of Ecuador asked the Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries and other oil-producing countries to assume Ecuador&apos;s oil sales commitments. Ecuador agreed to pay the countries back in an equivalent amount of oil when it was able to resume exports.

Estimates are given for the distance from a seismometer at which a miner can probably be detected. The procedure in making these estimates was to first establish the natural noise levels at the output of a surface seismometer for the 25 to 100 Hz frequency passband. The noise levels give the range of values which may be expected in areas with no man-made noise. For each noise level, we give the detection threshold which, when exceeded, indicates that a signal has been received. Based on the signals recorded by Westinghouse, curves are given which show the peak signal amplitude as a function of source- to-receiver distance (slant range). Curves are given for the Westinghouse seismic thumper, a 50-pound timber, and a sledge. For a given type of source, the receive signal strength depends more strongly on slant range than on any other factor. However, there is approximately a five-to-one scatter in the amplitudes. Thus, further study of factors affecting the signal amplitude might allow better estimates to be made for any particular geological setting. Combining the signal amplitude with the detection thresholds for the different noise conditions gives the distances at which a miner should be detected. These are given in Table l* below. [ ] The text also gives the increase in detection ranges which should occur if steps are taken to increase S/N by 10 dB. We feel that 10 dB is a conservative estimate of the improvement possible. During an actual rescue operation, the seismic crew and system should be capable of making on-site estimates of their detection capability, based on measurements of the site noise, and upon the best available estimates of the

This chapter includes tables for 1981 that were not available in time for publication of the 1981 Minerals Yearbook, but does not include corresponding tables for 1982. The value of raw nonfuel minerals produced in the United States during 1982 was estimated at about $20 billion, a decrease of $5 billion compared with that of 1981. The decline in value is the first since 1971 and is the largest percentage drop since 1938. Although the domestic mining industry continued to be troubled by difficulties in attracting capital and by import competition from countries with lower overall production costs, the principal cause of the decline was sharply decreased demand brought on by the worldwide economic slowdown. Metal commodities were impacted most severely with only 4 of 21 metals registering production value gains and only 3 of 21 showing production quantity increases. Overall metal production value decreased 37% from that of 1981, a reflection of the domestic slowdown in the automobile and construction industries, which are major metal users, Overall production value of nonmetals decreased 12% compared with that of 1981, with only 14 out of 44 nonmetals showing increases. Nonmetal production quantities increased over 1981 for only 6 of the 44 nonmetals.

THE MILDEST recession of the postwar period ended in the first months of 1961, and the economy climbed steadily during the remainder of the year. The Federal Reserve Board (FRB) Index of Industrial Production climbed from a low point of 102 (1957=100) in February to 115 in December, a rise of 12.5 percent. But economic activity for the year as a whole was only 1.5 percent higher than the 1960 level, as measured by real gross national product (GNP). Although activity increased throughout 1961, much of it was merely regaining ground lost in the decline during the second half of 1960 and the first months of 1961. The FRB index did not re ain the July 1960 high of 110 until June of 1961. Mineral fuels did not fully share in the economic recovery. The (FRB) crude oil and natural gas index rose only 5 percent between February and December. Although the index of monthly coal production increased 11.5 percent during the year, the February level was so low that total production for the year was the lowest since 1954. Total production of energy measured in Btu&apos;s was up slightly (1 percent) during the ear. Coal production was down; production of crude oil and natural gas was up. Calculated consumption paralleled production-total up slightly, coal lower, and crude oil and natural gas higher. The most interesting product developments were in coke and residual fuel oil. "It took only 9 years from the first appearance of roof shields on the U.S. longwall mining scene to the present predominance of shield faces. An apparent consequence is the welcome downward trend in accidents related to failures in longwall ground control. The report addresses load prediction, the effects of shield geometry on support loads, factors contributing to ground control, and related techniques. The Bureau of Mines took an active part in the evolution of longwall mining, including developing one of the first shield faces in 1975, the first lemniscatetype shields in 1976, the Mine Roof Simulator completed in 1980, the first shields in steeply pitching coalbeds in 1981, and the first multilift working of a thick coalbed in 1982. The information offered in this state-of-the-art report will assist in establishing criteria for roof support selection. INTRODUCTIONIn terms of roof support technology, the introduction of shields in the seventies and eighties was a major step forward. Table 1 indicates the predominance of shield faces on the U.S. longwall mining scene and its apparent consequence, a welcome downward trend of ground-control related accidents.The rapid progress of longwall technology began in 1975 and is highlighted by a development leading from the caliper shield to the modern lemniscate type. Shields have been gaining preference over chocks since their advent to longwall mining in 1975. Safety and productivity factors favoring shields over chocks are--1. A sheltered working space requiring minimum cleanup work.2. Structural stability that allows advancing without delay even with brushing roof contact and, by controlling all lateral loads, removing the requirement for cumbersome leg restraint and restoration devices.3. Wide hydraulic range of mining height.The development of roof shields in the Federal Republic of Germany preceded and paralleled their rapid adoption by U.S. miners. In 1983, 87 pct of the total production in Germany came from shield faces (1).2 In Great Britain, the National Coal Board introduced the first shield support system in 1977 to initiate Advanced Mining Technology (ATM) and Heavy Duty Mechanization (HDM) programs; as of mid-1982, 44 shield faces were operating, or 7.5 pct of a total of 581 faces CJ_)."

Metastable pyrophoric wüstite (FexO, with x between 0.89 and 0.95) was found to be much easier to grind to colloidal state than were its stable disproportion products magnetite or iron. The grinding of polycrystalline magnetite appears to be complicated by the magnetic flocculation arising from interparticle attraction. This is superimposed on the attraction of a fluctuating electric dipole for a neighboring induced dipole. More than 85 pct of the tumbling time was saved by grinding antiferromagnetic wüstite instead of the ferrimagnetic oxide of iron (Fe304). Disproportionation of colloidal wüstite to the stable ferromagnetic and ferrimagnetic colloidal particles of alpha-iron and magnetite, respectively, was accomplished rapidly at temperatures above 250° C but below 570° C, the eutectoidal stability point of the wüstite phase.

In 1985, ASARCO Incorporated terminated copper smelting operations and associated byproduct arsenic trioxide recovery at Tacoma, WA, although shipments of arsenic trioxide from stocks and limited production from cleanup operations continued. Imports of arsenic trioxide increased markedly as a result of increased demand for arsenical wood preservatives and the decline in domestic shipments of trioxide. Expanded world capacity more than met the increased demand for arsenic and its compounds, and prices remained unchanged throughout the year. Domestic Data Coverage.-Arsenic trioxide was produced by one U.S. company, which voluntarily reported its production to the Bureau of Mines.

As part of an overall goal to develop technology that can maintain an adequate supply of minerals to meet national economic and strategic needs, the Bureau of Mines is evaluating a method for selectively extracting nickel and cobalt from low-grade domestic laterites. The method involves electrowinning to recover the metals in pure form; therefore, preliminary laboratory-scale electrowinning tests were conducted in both a nondiaphragm and a diaphragm cell to determine the effect of variables on energy efficiency under controlled conditions. Electrolytes were generally reagent-grade sulfate solutions that were prepared to simulate electrolyte that could be obtained by stripping nickel-and cobalt-rich solvent extraction reagents. Limited tests were conducted with electrolyte generated from laterite leach solutions. Electrical energy consumption in a nondiaphragm cell was 2.06 kwhr/lb Ni with the cell operated at 50° C, a cell feed of 90 g/l Ni, a pH of 3.5, an extraction of 3.2 g/l, and a cathode current density of 20 amp/ft2. The energy requirement decreased with increasing concentration and temperature, and increased with increasing. extraction and current density. At 50° C, energy consumption in the nondiaphragm cell was 21 pct greater than in the diaphragm cell, but it was only 5 pet greater at 65° C. For this reason and because of overall cost considerations, operation at 65° C with the nondiaphragm cell was preferred. Smooth sheets of cobalt were obtained by electrowinning in a nondiaphragm cell at selected temperatures from 50° to 85° C and with cobalt concentrations from 55 to 87 g/l. The energy consumption (1.48 kwhr/lb) was 22 pet lower with a cobalt concentration of 75 g/l and a cell temperature of 65° C than with a cobalt concentration of 55 g/l and a cell temperature of 50° C.
