Comprehensive ventilation surveys are made to review the adequacy of the mine system with regard to both statutory requirements and/or company policy, to evaluate improvements to the current ventilation system and to plan for £stun expansion. If computer simulation is to be used for these purposes, accurate quantity and pressure measurements become an absolute necessity since the validity of the computer generated output is heavily dependent on the accuracy of the input data. Consequently ventilation surveys that are run to generate input data for computer simu¬lation must use the best data collection procedures to guarantee as accurate results as are possible. These requirements have led to modifications in procedures that are used for routine ventilation surveying. McElroy and Kingery (1957) have recommended that pressures be measured independent of quantities since minor changes in mine conditions have a greater effect on absolute pressure measurements than on quantity measure¬ments. They estimate that, for large mines, a pressure survey may take only 1 to 3 days while the corresponding quantity survey would require 1 to 3 weeks. Although this procedure would undoubtedly lead to more ac¬curate pressure measurements, its use for the development of computer input data is not recommended for the following reasons. Atkinson's equation, H = RQ2, is used in computer oriented analysis to develop the airway resistance, R, based on quantity and pressure loss measure¬ments. It can easily be seen that since R a 1/Q2 and R a H, the effect of errors in quantity measurement is, in fact, more significant than those in pressure measurement. The Madison RARE II study area has four prospects with identified resources. These are listed in table 1 and are described in the following text. A high potential for Sillimanite exists at the Placer Creek occurrence (fig. 1, no. 7) and potential for phosphate rack in all areas underlain by the Phosphoria Formation. Some prospects exhibit minor potential for copper, lead, zinc, silver, and gold in the southern portion and very minor potential in the northern portion. Deposits in the northern end also have low potential for rare earth, asbestiform anthophyllite, or kyanite group minerals (including sillimanite).

"Because of its interest in accident prevention, the U.S. Bureau of Mines cooperates with city officials and utilities in investigating the causes of explosions in sewers, manholes, and other underground openings and in developing means for preventing such explosions. For several years this Bureau has been cooperating with the Edison Electric Illuminating Co. of Boston and the Boston Consolidated Gas Co. in detecting and eliminating combustibles and physiologically harmful gases in manholes in the city of Boston and adjacent territory.These Bureau of Mines investigations° have shown that combustible gases from the usual sources — leakage from gas—distributing systems and from underground tanks and gasoline wastes — can be located and the dangerous conditions remedied by a well—planned, adequately supervised, systematic, and continuous manhole survey. However, other types of gas, which are termed here ""soil"" gases, also occur in manholes and are more difficult to eliminate because they have no fixed origin and because seasonal and barometric changes affect their production and passage into the manhole space. These gases appear to be produced by bacterial and fermentation or through reactions of entrapped air in the soil. Soil usually abnormally high in carbon dioxide and low in oxygen, and contain varying amounts of methane. They are especially clangorous to men entering manholes because they lack sufficient oxygen to support life. Owing to the difficulty of constructing gastight manholes the most feasible method for eliminating soil gases from manholes is by ventilation. Consequently the Bureau of Mines initiate 4 study of natural ventilation methods for the removal of these gases from manholes and also for taking care of unforeseen accumulations of combustible gases and vapors.The following factors were considered by the Bureau to be important to the natural ventilation of manholes: (1) Relation of area of ventilation opening* to the capacity of the manholes, (2) size and shape of the manhole, (3) design of the ventilation opening (4) and velocity, and (5) weather conditions."

A portable radon diffusion chamber has been tested with electrical collection of the radon daughter nuclei for enhancement of sensitivity. The detector size was small enough to be worn suspended from the belt. With a battery-supplied high voltage the sensitivity was found to be 1.43 tracks/cm2 per pCi-hr/l of ambient radon at Sot relative humidity. The track densities on the surfaces of the CR-39 plastic nuclear track detectors were found to be non-uniform, making difficult the determination of average densities with high accuracy. The fabrication of electrets for use in the detector was investigated in accordance with published techniques with negative results.

[This is the third report related to fundamental retail roof-bolting research in underground mines (1, 2)3/ and describes an investigation of the torque-load relationship for 3/ -inch, expansion-type mine roof bolts. In a previous investigation the relationship between torque and bolt load was established for 1-inch slotted-type bolts (1). The two types of bolts differ in diameter and method of tightening and consequently may exhibit different torque-load behavior. The 1-inch bolt is tightened by turning the nut, the 3/4-inch bolt by rotating the beaded bolt itself. Experience indicates that roof bolts should be tightened to moors satisfactory anchorage sand to minimise nag of tie roof over the mine opening. The generally accepted means for determining the bolt load is to see a torque wrench to measure he torque applied in tightening the bolt and, from a predetermined relationship between torque and molt load, to, determine the corresponding bolt load. Because frictional effects may vary between one type of shell assembly or bolt and others, 7 types of expansion shell units and 3 types of 3/4-inch-diameter, mild steel bolts were tested.]

The Bureau of Mines used mathematical reliability theory to define, for use in the mining industry, the concepts of risk, safety, reliability, hazard, and mean time between accidents. In this report, the definitions are explained theoretically and illustrated by application to actual underground mine accident data extending over a 9-1/2-year period. The theoretical development proceeds along two parallel analytical paths. For each line of reasoning, the data are presumed to be independent. If they are not, the analysis stops, although there are interesting implications when dependency is demonstrated. The first method uses the elapsed times between accidents as the basic data. These elapsed times are fitted to a negative exponential distribution function using least squares and yielding the function parameter, P1 The P1 is used to form the Poisson distribution function for the data, which is then used to define the safety-related concepts. The second method uses the maximum likelihood estimator to formulate a Poisson distribution function for the data. The function is tested for adequacy by a goodness-of-fit test; if the fit is acceptable, the Poison function is used to define the concepts. Both methods were applied to the data base, yielding nearly identical results.

"In an earlier consideration of the vapor pressure of iron 3/ it was found necessary to estimate the specific heat of gaseous iron to write satisfactory free-energy-of-vaporization equations for the several forms of iron. That the specific heat of gaseous iron will exceed greatly the classical value of Cp = 4.967 calories per gram-mole per degree is evident from even a cursory Lamination of its spectrum. The two lowest energy states are separated by only 416 cm-1, which is small enough so that the second state is effective, theoretically, at below room temperature. Such phenomena are by no means uncommon, but, while they have been recognized with substances that ordinarily are encountered as gases, classical gaseous specific--heat values still are used, often without question, for the vapors of metals and other elements that are solids under ordinary conditions. The following calculations for iron and copper gases are presented to illustrate the sort of deviations from classical values that are encountered with metal gases.The methods employed in calculating from spectroscopic data of thermodynamic quantities such as specific heat, entropy, and free energy have been described, in detail by Giauque 4/ and others. These will be briefly reviewed here. It is customary to separate the translational energy of a molecule from the rotational, vibrational, and electronic energies. In the case of monatomic gases, only translational and electronic Energies are involved. The classical expression for the specific heat of a mona¬tomic gas, Cp = 4.967, deals only with energy stored in the molecule as translational energy and consequently is valid only in temperature ranges in which no appreciable number of molecules undergoes a change in electronic state."

Coalbed gas content measurements are commonly used in mine safety as well as coalbed methane resource assessment and recovery applications. Gas content determination techniques generally fall into two categories: (1) direct methods which actually measure the volume of gas released from a coal sample sealed into a desorption canister and (2) indirect methods based on empirical correlations, or laboratory derived sorption isotherm gas storage capacity data. Direct gas content determination techniques may be further. subdivided into quick-crushing and extended desorption methods. The quick-crushing methods are primarily used in mine safety applications outside the United States, but have also been used for resource recovery applications. Quick-crushing methods rely on crushing the coal sample soon after collection to release all the desorbable gas, thus significantly shortening the amount of time required for desorption measurements. However, some data useful for resource recovery applications are lost. Extended desorption techniques are most commonly used for resource assessment and recovery applications where information on desorption rates is useful for reservoir modeling, and for fundamental coalbed methane research. Extended desorption methods allow the gases in the coal sample to desorb under controlled laboratory conditions until a defined low desorption rate cutoff point is reached. The sample may then be crushed to measure the amount of gas remaining within the sample. Direct method techniques for gas content measurement are the focus of this paper.

Provide the National Park Service (NPS) with guidelines for closing abandoned mine openings such as shafts and adits. Approach The NPS needed alternative methods of closing a variety of abandoned mine openings on National Park lands. Because the U.S. Bureau of Mines (USBM) has a long history of mining-related experience, the NPS requested that the Bureau provide them with technical mine closure information. USBM engineers compiled information on various types of mine closures and prepared technical illustrations of those closure techniques. Multiple closure options, by type of opening, were prepared as one-page field guides to assist NPS field personnel in determining the most appropriate closure method for a given situation and detailing the construction of the closure method. Results Guidelines provided to the NPS included a description of the method, use applications, construction techniques, technical illustrations, and technical support information. The following provides a brief description of 11 mine closure techniques identified for use by NPS personnel. Most of the closure methods, except the backfill methods, allow for construction that can provide access to the mine. However, providing access makes the closure susceptible to vandalism. Most closure methods require periodic monitoring for subsidence and corrosion or deterioration of construction materials.

[The use of vapor-tight tanks has proved so effective in reducing the evaporation losses of petroleum that today practically all operators are using this typo of equipment. It has boon shown, however, that vapor-tight tanks should be supplemented with additional measures which will further reduce evaporation. Probably the most effective use of the supplemental measures are found on the small producing leases where the breathing losses from vapor-tight stock tanks materially affect the volume and gravity of the stored oil. The breathing loss from a vapor-tight stock tank that is filled and emptied daily is a negligible quantity. Also, the filling loss, which on the average varies between 0.1 and 0.2 per cent, usually is not of a sufficient quantity to affect materially the value of the crude. However, the combined breathing and filling losses from a vapor-tight tank requiring several days to fill are of sufficient importance to warrant the use of measures in addition to the vapor-tight tanks. The breathing losses are caused by atmospheric variations. Probably the greatest are the changes in atmospheric temperature which cause changes in temperature of the vapors in the tank. During the day, as the temperature increases, the gasoline-saturated vapors in the tank expand and are forced out into the atmosphere. At night the vapors are cooled and contract, drawing into the tank fresh air, which becomes saturated with gasoline vapor and is forced out of the tank during the following day. In Addition to the maximum and minimums temperature variations there are many smaller variations throughout a twenty-four period caused by showers, clouds, winds, and other atmospheric conditions which likewise cause the tank to breathe. The two mist common measures used by lease operators for reducing breathing losses in vapor-tight tanks are, first, operating; lease tanks under pressure, and second, the use of light colored paints anti tank houses. In this report these two methods are discussed together with their adaptability to lease operation. Results of experimental observations are given which show the reduction of evaporation looses where these supplemental measures have been used.]

Afghanistan's mineral industry continued to be dominated by the production and export of natural gas, although several mining and related industrial projects, all under the supervision of Soviet technicians, were in the planning stage in 1982. Afghanistan produced minor quantities of barite, cement, coal, fertilizer materials, iron, and lapis lazuli, all for domestic consumption.2 Large-scale projects being investigated were a copper mine and concentrating plant at Ainak, extensive mining of the Hajigak iron ore deposit near Kabul, construction of an oil refinery at Angot, increasing production and processing of natural gas, and implementing an intensive geologic prospecting and exploration program for areas of mineral potential. Afghanistan's gross domestic product (GDP) was estimated at $2.76 billion3 and has remained stagnant for the past several years. Total exports in 1982 were estimated at $700 million, only a marginal increase from the 1981 figure of $694 million. Exports of natural gas to the U.S.S.R. earned $385 million in 1982, representing just over one-half of Afghanistan's total exports. Natural gas revenues were down approximately 11% from the 1981 level, owing primarily to increased antigovernment activity in the northern part of the country.4 About 90% of the country's natural gas production was exported to the U.S.S.R.5 About 38% of Afghanistan's development budget had been earmarked for mining and industrial projects in 1982.6

The Bureau of Mines studied 780 acres of the 24,130-acre Sheldon Contiguous Wilderness Study Area (CA-020-1012) in 1985. The study was done at the request of the Bureau of Land Management and authorized under the Federal Land Policy and Management Act (Public Law 94-579, October 21, 1 976) in order to evaluate the mineral resources. The study area is located in Washoe County, NV, about 35 miles northeast of Cedarville, CA. A search of county courthouse records and an examination by foot traverses through and adjacent to the study area did not reveal evidence of any mining or mining exploration activity past or present. In addition, evidence of any form of rock alteration was not observed. Evidence of mineral resources is not apparent. Although basalt, the only rock-type present in the study area, can have some limited industrial applications, sources closer to potential markets probably would preclude rock from this area being economically competitive. INTRODUCTION This report describes the USBM (U.S. Bureau of Mines) portion of a cooperative study with the USGS (U.S. Geological Survey) to evaluate mineral resources and potential of the Sheldon Contiguous study area at the request of the BLM (U.S. Bureau of Land Management). The USBM examines individual mines, prospects, claims, and mineralized zones, and evaluates identified mineral and energy resources. The USGS evaluates potential for undiscovered resources based on areal geological, geochemical, and geophysical surveys. Results of the investigations will be used to help determine the suitability of the study area for inclusion into the National Wilderness Preservation System. Although the immediate goal of this and other USBM mineral surveys ;s to provide data for President, Congress, government agencies, and the public for land-use decisions, the long-term objective is to ensure the Nation has an adequate and dependable supply of minerals at a reasonable cost.

Injury experience in the mineral mining and processing industries during 1968 was slightly improved in the nonfatal-injury record but worse in the fatality record. The resulting frequency rate of all injuries was slightly better, whereas the injury-severity rate retrogressed appreciably from the figure for 1967. Overall operating activity, as measured by man-hours of worktime, was slightly higher in 1968. However, there were several major segments of the mineral industries in which activity was lower owing to reduced demand for mineral products and to several major work stoppages. These statistics comprise the injury and work experience of all personnel engaged in production, exploration, development, maintenance, repair, and force-account construction work, including supervisory and technical personnel, and working partners and owners at mineral-producing and mineral-processing establishments in the United States. Data concerning officeworkers are excluded except for the oil and gas industry for which such information is not separable. All injury rates and totals are calculated from data before rounding. The data for 1968 are preliminary except for the anthracite, coke, petroleum and natural gas, native asphalt, peat, and slag industries, which are final. The figures represent full coverage for all industries except oil and gas for which coverage is not complete, particularly with respect to small companies.

Elementary concepts of seismic wave properties are reviewed to establish a framework for discussing seismic noise and its suppression. A liberal number of references is included for those who wish to pursue the topic in detail. A base motion noise level is established for a single surface seismometer. It is argued that simple array processing and seismometer burial should regularly permit us to approach this base noise level which is found in areas free of conspicuous man-made seismic noise sources. The sensitivity of the base seismic level to a number of common disturbances is presented. Solutions that promise to hold the "effective" seismic noise at a site near the base level are given for acoustic, meteorological and fixed local surface sources. Guidelines are suggested for controlling other local man-made sources, e.g. vehicular traffic, by keeping them at sufficiently large distances away from the seismometers to keep noise at permissible levels. These guidelines are speculative and conservative. They should be the subject of future study. The ability to process against general local activity, drilling, and intra- mine sources is limited. Certainly no dramatic gain is to be expected. When strong man-made and/or intramine noise sources are not controllable, detection may well be impossible to achieve, unless the seismometer can be moved close enough to the suspected miner position, i.e. via very deep holes, to compensate for the likely vast differences in strength of the miner signal and the uncontrollable man-made noise sources. However, many intramine sources, e.g., falling water, rock bursts, explosions, etc., may well preclude the existence of a hale miner in their vicinity, and therefore any need to attempt detection of a miner at such locations. The following recommendations are made to enhance the detection and location of a miner signaling seismically. They are: 1. Seismometer burial in slim holes. 2. Narrow band detection, using multiple narrow band filters to cover the likely signal band. 3. Broadband recording and analysis for time-of-arrival estimation.

The attention of this group was focussed on four through-the-earth communication systems that are presently of high interest to the U.S. Bureau of Mines; four systems for providing operational/emergency communications on the working sections of coal mines, indeed up to the very face of the section. The systems are: uplink-data, downlink-voice, sidelink-call alert coded page, sidelink-roof bolt voice page. Each of these systems makes use of the mine overburden as the signal transmission medium, as opposed to the guiding wires, cables, and tunnels treated by the operational communications working group. Each of these systems satisfies one or more of the Bureau's objectives for mine communications systems; namely • reliable links for monitoring the mine environment under both operational and emergency conditions. • reliable links for communicating with miners during emergencies. • special links for increasing the efficiency of day-to-day operations of the mine. Each of these systems has been successfully demonstrated on a limited experimental basis, and prototypes of all these systems are installed and operating in the USBM experimental mine in Bruceton, Pa. Each of these systems must now be optimized regarding its performance, and engineered for practical routine application to the working sections of actual operating coal mines, particularly those of the room and pillar type. This optimization and engineering must take place subject to the principal constraints listed by Howard E. Parkinson in his Workshop paper entitled, "Objectives and Constraints of Through-the-Earth Electromagnetic Communications Systems'' and enumerated below. • Depth of Mine Overburden • Overburden Conductivity • Electromagnetic Noise In and Above Mines • Limited In-Mine Electrical Energy (Stationary or Man Carried) During an Emergency • Intrinsic Safety for In-Mine Equipment • Practical and Rugged Equipment for Use Under Both operational/Emergency conditions • Severe Weight Limitations for Man Carried Equipment • Reasonably Low Costs Especially for Man Carried Equipment Part II of this paper provides a brief description of each system, while Part III summarizes the present status of developments related to these systems and some recommendations for future work needed to advance these systems to the practical application stage.

This description of process evaluation techniques used by the Bureau of Mines for studying proposed processing techniques has been prepared to provide those interested in using these studies with an understanding of the methodology. The methods used for preparing both capital and operating cost estimates are described. Each step in preparing the evaluations is described. Types of equipment costs are shown and factors used in the estimates are defined. Uses of the estimates are suggested and several examples are included. The accuracy of various types of estimates is discussed, along with an explanation of the reason for selecting the type used in the Bureau's process evaluation studies.

The Government's ban on all commercial mining operations, except for small-scale artisan exploitation of alluvial gold deposits, continued throughout 1985. Minerals produced were kaolin and lime for agricultural uses, and experimental peat harvesting for energy applications. The total value of the minerals produced during the year was estimated at $1.1 million .2 In early 1985, an agreement between the Government and Amoco International Oil Co. was ratified for a petroleum exploration concession covering 248,000 hectares of Lake Tanganyika. Onshore exploration in the Ruzizi Plain was already under way the last half of 1985. By yearend, enough seismic information was available that Amoco hoped to complete data analyses, determine onshore drilling sites, and begin drilling operations before the end of 1986. Also to begin in the latter part of 1986 were seismic studies of Lake Tanganyika. Throughout 1985, Amoco officials were negotiating with the Government of Zaire for expanding the exploration acreage into that country's portion of northern Lake Tanganyika and the Ruzizi Plain. An agreement between Amoco and Zaire could have important beneficial economic implications for both Zaire and Burundi, and onshore seismic work in Zaire logistically supported from Bujumburi could begin almost immediately.

"A convective dispersion model has been utilized to calculate the real-time airborne dust concentration in mine airways using re-entrainment as the only source term for airborne dust. It incorporates two important sources of re-entrainment in mines -- air velocity and movement of objects. The model has a sink term accounting for the deposition of particles along the airway. The model is solved using a finite difference scheme which is coded for computer. The computer model outputs airborne respirable and total dust concentrations along the airway as a function of time. The real-time and average gravimetric concentrations from several in-mine experiments were compared with the results from the simulation of the experimental conditions. This model can be used for estimating airborne dust entrainment due to air velocity, equipment movement, and persons walking. INTRODUCTIONEdwards and Ford (1988) developed a model for coal dust explosion suppression and utilized a predetermined value of threshold velocity for flowing air to pick up dust from floor. Depending on the strength of the removal forces, re-entrainment can increase the airborne dust concentration in mine airways. The most prevalent forces causing re-entrainment in mine airways are the drag and lift forces due to flowing air, and removal forces due to the movement of persons and vehicles. Shankar and Ramani (1991) have investigated the unique characteristics of the re-entrainment phenomenon in mine airways. Experiments on re-entrainment of coal dust particles were conducted in mine airways, and in a wind tunnel (Shankar and Ramani, 1994a, and 1994b). The results from the two experimental studies were found to compare well (Shankar and Ramani, 1995). There is no reported model to determine the airborne dust concentrations due to airflow or persons walking under conditions existing in mines. The present study is a part of a continuing research project in the Generic Mineral Technology Center for Respirable Dust on the spatial and temporal behavior of airborne dust in mine airways (Ramani, 1983)."

Inhaled particle contact with pulmonary surfactant in the hypophase lining pulmonary alveoli was modeled in vitro by exposing two respirable sized dusts, kaolin and silica quartz, to lecithin, a major component of pulmonary surfactant, emulsified in physiologic saline. Lecithin adsorbs to the dusts upon incubation at 37º C and suppresses their cytotoxicity as measured by pulmonary macrophage and erythrocyte assays, suggesting that pulmonary surfactant provides a defense system against prompt cell membrane lysis by inhaled dusts. Subsequent pulmonary macrophage phagocytosis and lysosomal enzyme digestion of the coated dusts was modeled in vitro by incubation with phospholipase A2 for one hour. With increasing lipase activity, silica hemolytic potential was restored to native silica levels. Kaolin was retoxified to levels far in excess of native kaolin hemolytic potential. Elution, thin layer chromatography and phosphate assay of treated dusts indicate most lecithin on silica is digested to lysolecithin and desorbed, silica retoxification being due to surface and adherent lysolecithin effects. Most lecithin on kaolin is not digested in this same time; that which is results in adherent lysolecithin which is responsible for the kaolin retoxification. Digestion with phospholipases A2 and C together produces only weakly retoxified kaolin. Results suggest that surface adsorption properties which control the adherence of prophylactic surfactant distinguish the pathogenic potentials of quartz, kaolin and mixed dust.

In 1986, at the request of the Bureau of Land Management, the U.S. Bureau of Mines studied the 7,940-acre Southern Otay Mountain Wilderness Study Area (CA-060-029), and the 5,750-acre Western Otay Mountain Wilderness Study Area (CA-060-028) in order to evaluate their mineral resources. The wilderness study areas are located in San Diego County, CA, about 20 miles southeast of San Diego. No mineral resources were identified in the Southern or Western Otay Mountain Wilderness Study Areas, based on literature, field observations, and sample results. The wilderness study areas are underlain by a complex blend of Late Jurassic, moderately metamorphosed sedimentary and volcanic rocks. Evidence of mineralization is not obvious.
