The electromagnetic retransmission system is a new, automated method of locating trapped mine workers. This technique overcomes many 1 imitations inherent in electromagnetic direction finding by reducing the effects of the conducting ground to an acceptable maximum, by finding position accurately in the presence of antenna tilt, and by eliminating the need for the receiver to be located directly above the subsurface transmitter. Three transportable three-axis magnetic-dipole transmitters on the surface create a system of electronic grids in which the phases of the downlink Signals convey position information. The subsurface retransmitter modulates the uplink carrier of the existing beacon transmitter with the received downlink signal; the coal-pillar loop antenna is used for both receiving and transmitting. The uplink receiver uses a three-axis antenna and extensive digital signal processing. A small computer integrates data, estimates position, and controls system operation through VHF-FM communications. Both coal-mine and deep-mine operation are possible by selecting appropriate transmitting power and signal frequencies. This report shows such systems to be both feasible and practical.

A program was initiated tinder sponsorship of the U. S. Bureau of Mines to investigate pipeline behavior of raw and spent oil shale slurries. Slurries were recirculated in pipeline loops with 150-mm and 200-mm diameter horizontal test sections and a 150 -mm diameter vertical test section. Slurry concentrations from 10 to 60 weight percent were investigated. Critical and deposition velocities were observed. Head losses were measured at various velocities. Rheology measurements were made on representative homogeneous samples from the pipeline. From these data, pipeline energy requirements were predicted by computer and compared to pipeline data. Computer programs were also used to analyze pipeline data for two flow models: 1. Heterogeneous flow regime for coarse, settling slurries 2. Homogeneous flow regime for nonsettling suspensions The economics of slurry transport of raw and spent shale were examined. Cost estimates encompassed a range of pipe diameters to transport a wide range of throughputs of both raw and spent shale. Similar estimates were made for conveyor belt systems to provide a valid cost comparison. Economic comparisons are valid in a general sense, but a specific study must be made to determine the cost advantages of hydraulic transport for a given mine.

1. The 1952 Annual Report of the West Virginia Department of Mines lists nine beds that arc being mined in Logan County, of which the Cedar Grove and Chilton are the most important. The Cedar Grove group, No. 2 Gas, and Alma beds have the largest remaining reserves, in the order given. 2. Known measured and indicated reserves in all beds, based on a minimum thickness of 14 inches and 1,800 short tons per acre-foot of coal in place, are estimated at 5,411 million tons as of January 1, 1954. Of this total, 3,939 million tons is in beds 28 inches and more thick. Areas in each bed were omitted from the estimate because available data relative to the bed characteristics were too meager for making an estimate that conforms with the definitions of measured and indicated coal adopted for this study. Should future drilling or development prove reserves in these areas, such reserves should be added to the total estimate reserves.

The Duluth Gabbro Complex in Northeastern Minnesota possibly contains a significant domestic copper resource and the nation's largest nickel resource. Exploration has discovered large low-grade copper-nickel (Cu-Ni) deposits between Hoyt Lakes and the Boundary Waters Canoe Area (BWCA). The mining and processing of Cu-Ni will have environmental, economic, and social impacts. The purpose of this study is to relate major environmental, economic, and social considerations to various aspects of Cu-Ni extraction. An open pit and two underground (block caving and open stoping with backfilling) models were developed to generate information on the impact of Cu-Ni extraction. Important considerations having environmental, economic, and social impacts (luring various aspects of Cu-Ni extraction are identified and defined. These aspects are exploration, development, mining, beneficiating, smelting, transportation, and termination of operations. Considerations are grouped into the general categories of site, industrial, energy, climatic, resource, water, air emission, waste disposal, employee, tax and royalty, transportation, and community considerations. Cu-Ni extraction in Northeastern Minnesota presents major environmental, economic, and social risks. Decisions are required on trade-offs between adverse and beneficial impacts. The approach used in this study assists in assessing environmental, economic, and social impacts. It will aid in the examination of potential and projected short-term and long-term advantages and disadvantages and will aid in the development of Minnesota's Cu-Ni resource for the maximum benefit to society.

This report describes methods of reclaiming abandoned or inactive tailings ponds and dams. The investigated sites were selected tailings deposits adjacent to metal mines in the southwestern United States and the Pacific Northwest. The basic data developed for each site consisted of the following: a review of existing literature; a site visit that included sampling of the tailings and surrounding materials; laboratory and engineering studies; and development of reclamation plans. Laboratory tests determined the gold and silver content of each tailings deposit and the chemistry of the tailings and surrounding materials. Reclamation plans that include approximate costs were developed for five tailings deposit sites. These ranged in size from 52,000 to 103,000,000 tons. Our conclusions on the remining potential of each site are based on the tailings assay and other technical data. This study concludes that remining as a reclamation tool is feasible at certain sites. Included in this report is a remining program as part of the overall reclamation plan for two sites. Our preliminary results indicate that remining as a reclamation tool is feasible for only one of them.

[Recovery of core specimens from subsurface formations and their subsequent analysis are important aids in efficient development and operation of oil and gas fields. Core specimen first were obtained mainly for the geologic information they revealed; now they are on analyzed to determine many of the physical characteristics and conditions of the subsurface formations as well. Cores recovered from the producing formations may be analyzed for porosity, permeability, oil content, "connate" water content, and other physical and chemical properties of the formation, all to the end of furnishing enough data for making reliable estimates of the quantity and availability of oil and gas within reservoir and in devising efficient means for their withdrawal.]

This paper, describing the milling practices at the Minpro plant of the Tennessee Mineral Products Corporation, Spruce Pine, N. C., is the first of a series being prepared by the U.S. Bureau of Mines on feldspar milling methods and costs in the various feldspar producing areas in the United States. It describes not only the latest practices in feldspar grinding but includes studies of the cost of producing ground feldspar. These cost studies, obviously of interest to every consumer and purchaser of feldspar and to all feldspar grinders, are also of value to the small operator, who is generally prone to understimate his real costs. It describes the latest practices in feldspar milling and includes detailed costs of grinding. The cost tabulations presented show operating expenditures only and not total production costs. Details of costs are given only to the extent that they are essential to the technical discussion and study of the methods employed. A description of the recently installed milling unit for the preparation of granular glasspar by graded crushing, and magnetic separation is of particular interest. It illustrates how highly specialized feldspar milling has become, and to what an extent grinders are going to supply consumers with the products best suited for their particular needs.

The peacetime activities of the Bureau's petroleum and natural-gas program have been reoriented to serve the needs of a national-defense program. When the United Nations sent troops to Korea after the North Korean Army crossed the 38th parallel in the latter part of June 1950, the Bureau's coordinated national program on petroleum and natural gas, with each major project forming an essential member of its framework, was carefully reviewed by those in charge of the work. As a matter of fact, the era of normalcy in which the petroleum and natural-gas research of the Bureau of Mines prospered during the fiscal year 19502/ was no sedative to the need for alertness on a national-defense front. The program, although conducted along peacetime lines in general, was scanned critically and repeatedly during that period to see where - if the need should arise -the emphasis could be shifted from peace to defense or war. Judging from the experience of two wars, it would not be long before the Bureau would be asked to use its trained technical personnel in applying techniques already learned in peacetime research to the requirements of munition and fuel needs of national defense. Near the end of January 1951, petroleum and natural-gas engineers of the Bureau of Mines began a comprehensive study of reservoir conditions in the Canyon Reef fields of Scurry, Borden, and Kent Counties, Tex. This work was preceded by published analyses of crude oils from Scurry County as early as April 1950. Well-informed persons in industry have estimated that these fields hold reserves that will yield 3 to 6 billion barrels of stock-tank oil. Although generally accepted good operating practices have been followed, engineering tests have shown that the natural energy, except in some favorable parts of the reservoir, will not be adequate for obtaining a high percentage of recovery. Correct information regarding the extent and availability of this vast reservoir of hydrocarbons is therefore of great concern to the Petroleum Administration for Defense in carrying out its responsibilities under the Defense Production Act.

This Bureau of Mines report is the second of a series of process evaluations planned to determine the relative processing costs of producing metallurgical-grade alumina from low-grade aluminous materials. Included in these evaluations are recommendations for additional research and development to improve the processes and to lower their costs. The design for each process is based on published work. The processes considered in this report are designed to extract alumina as aluminum chloride from calcined clay with 20 percent hydrochloric acid and to remove the silica residue by filtration. Iron is removed by one of the following processes: Isopropyl ether extraction, in which iron chloride is extracted before decomposing the aluminum chloride; gas precipitation, in which the aluminum chloride is precipitated with hydrogen chloride while leaving the iron chloride in solution; gas precipitation-isopropyl ether extraction, in which the aluminum chloride from precipitation is extracted with isopropyl ether, if necessary; caustic purification, in which a crude alumina is produced and then purified by a modified Bayer operation; or sinter purification, in which a crude alumina is produced and then purified by a lime-soda sinter operation. "INTRODUCTION Sponge iron is a product resulting from the reduction of an iron oxide at such a low temperature that fusion does not occur, and the reduced particles retain substantially the same shape as the original ore. The removal of oxygen in the reduction process leaves the metal porous and reactive. Sponge iron may be compared in general to a chemically precipitated substance insofar as reactive properties are concerned. The high specific surface and the orientation of metallic structure are factors which probably contribute to the reactive properties of sponge iron.The term ""gaseous reduction,"" as applied to iron ores, required clarification. Strong evidence exists, for example, that ore is partly reduced to sponge iron by carbon monoxide in the blast furnace at temperatures around 800° C. at a point that may be as high as 30 feet above the tuyores. In 1923 and 1924, Sims and Wood attempted to reduce iron oxide with carbon in an Arsem vacuum furnace at 980° C. These investigators found that only 6 percent of the iron was reduced to metal when the iron oxide-carbon mixture was heated for 1 hour under evacuated conditions, whereas at atmospheric pressure 70 percent of the iron was metallized. Their results indicate that the process of iron-ore reduction at temperatures below the melting point of the ore may proceed largely, if not entirely, by the action of reducing gases even when the reducing agent is solid carbon. Therefore, the term ""gaseous reduction,"" as used heroin, is defined as a process in which iron ore is brought into intimate contact with a reducing gas produced in separate-equipment from the reduction chamber itself.A large amount of pilot-plant development on gaseous reduction of iron ores has been carried out by the Bureau of Mines at the Boulder Experiment Station and had as its objective the reduction of fine iron ore by means of producer gas. The use of use gas was prompted by two considerations: First, the possible utilization of large reserves of Western noncoking bituminous coals and lignites contiguous to iron-ore drewwing; and second, an investigation of the results that might be achieved in the pilot-plant gaseous reduction of fine iron ores by means of a relatively reducing gas. The results obtained, it was felt, would be of considerable value in indicating the direction which gaseous reduction experimentation must take for the development of a commercially practicable and economic process for the production of sponge iron."

This publication is devoted to the results of a study conducted in the coal mines of the Book Cliffs and Wasatch Plateau coal fields of Utah. To show the necessity of this study, a statement of the fatalities that have occurred during the period 1928-1930, inclusive, in the bituminous mines of the United States and of Utah, is presented (Table 1), followed by a brief description of this Utah district, its coal beds and immediate roof, thickness of cover, dip of coal beds, methods of mining, supervision, roof testing and timbering for roof support, all of which are factors in any plan devised for preventing accidents from falls of roof and coal.

An award is a form of recognition given for superior performance in a special field of endeavor. Each year awards are given by the Joseph A. Holmes Safety Association and the National Safety Council to mineral industries' mines, quarries, and plants that have worked a specific number of man-hours without a lost-time injury. These awards have a dual significance in that they prove that efficiency can be attained without injury to persons. Safety awards do not result from luck or good fortune but do result from sincere desire coupled with sufficient effort and cooperation to achieve a desired goal.

The first metal-mine accident-prevention course was prepared and published in 1942-45 as a series of seven miners' circulars (Nos. 51-57). The course has been broadened in scope, revised, and brought up to date and is being published as a similar series of seven miners' circulars (Nos. 51-57, revised) on accident prevention in metal and non-metallic mines. These circulars are as follows: Injury Statistics (Miners' Circular 51), dealing with general statistics on injuries from accidents at metal and nonmetallic mines, including causes, costs, and the use of investigations and reports of all injuries.

"Research on the control of exposure to respirable contaminants in mine atmospheres is conducted in five areas; 1) control of dust generation, 2) dilution, dispersion and collection of dust in mine airways, 3) characterization of dust particles, 4) interaction of dust and lungs, 5) relationship of mine environment, geology, and seam characteristics to dust generation and mobility. The distribution of research findings to the mining industry, to government agencies, and to scientists at other universities is accomplished in several ways.A data bank of respirable dust samples displaying a wide range of characteristics (low volatile, medium volatile, high volatile, silica fireclay, rockdust) has been established by the Center. This data bank is being utilized by Center researchers in a suite of medical, scientific, and engineering tests (FIGURE 26).The Center has honored requests for educational and informational materials from several sources, including MSHA and CANMET who received information on Center generated software and used the Center's expertise in developing a computer program for particle distribution model (DISFIT).The Generic Mineral Technology Center for Respirable Dust has organized two dust conferences on respirable dust, the Coal Mine Dust Conference, held at West VirginiaUniversity, Morgantown, West Virginia from October 8-10, 1984 and Respirable Dust in the Mineral Industries: Health Effects, Characterization and Control, an international symposium on Respirable Dust in the Mineral Industries held at The Pennsylvania State University, University Park, Pennsylvania from October 14-16. 1986. These conferences were co-sponsored by the U.S. Bureau of Mines, Mine Safety and Health Administration, National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH), and the American Conference of Governmental Industrial Hygienists (ACGIH). On August 23-26, 1988, the VIIth International Pnuemoconioses Conference was held in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. While not a sponsor of this conference, researchers in the Generic Mineral Technology Center for Respirable Dust had significant participation with sixteen (16) papers presented (see Volume 8 of this series for abstracts and papers). These conferences provided a significant forum for the exchange of ideas on dust research and the interchange of research findings. The proceedings from these conferences are available from NTIS and ACGIH.In sum, significant benefits to mine worker health have resulted and should continue to result from the synergistic scientific, engineering, and medical research in respirable dust (FIGURE 27). As always, an important objective is the rapid dissemination of the results of this research to industry. Video tapes and the Bureau's Technology News series have been a very effective means of USBM technology transfer. The feasibility of using small-scale models to simulate residential masonry foundation walls subject to fatigue loading was investigated. Five wall segments were modeled in one-quarter scale using dynamic similitude equations. The walls were dynamically loaded using a sinusoidal base motion and wall accelerations were monitored. The stiffness, natural frequency response, and damping characteristics were measured. The number of cycles of testing necessary to cause initial visible cracking was recorded. Analysis of the data indicated the importance of the relationship between the forcing function and the natural frequencies of the structure in influencing cracking damage.

In 1949 the Coal Committee of the Economic Commission for Europe, Geneva, Switzerland, established a Classification Working Party, to develop an international system for classifying coal. This project was necessitated by the increased trade in coal among various nations following World War II. Although national classification systems existed, they had been developed to cover the characteristics of domestic coals without reference to coals of other countries. Different terms for describing similar or identical coals in each nation caused confusion in evaluating coals shipped in international trade. Experts from Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Czechoslovakia, Denmark, the Federal Republic of Germany, France, Greece, Hungary, Italy, the Netherlands, Poland, Sweden, the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics, East Germany, the United Kingdom, the United States of America, and Yugoslavia participated in various stages of the classification work. Walter A. Selvig was appointed by the Bureau of Mines as the technical expert to represent the United States because of his experience in developing and standardizing methods of analyzing and classifying American coals. He served on the Classification Working Party until his retirement from the Bureau of Mines early in 1956. Extensive laboratory work was done in connection with the classification studies at the Pittsburgh Experiment Station of the Bureau of Mines.

Nine organic derivatives of fluorine, silicon, boron, and aluminum were purified for thermodynamic studies using distillation, zone melting, and gas liquid chromatography, The unusual properties of these compounds required the development of special techniques for handling and purification. To determine purities of purified samples, new techniques for analyzing spectral data were developed.

The Bureau of Mines and the Alabama Power Co., jointly, conducted the first experiment undertaken in the United States in underground gasification of coal in place, at Gorgas, Ala. Milton H. Fies, manager of coal operations, Alabama Power Co., proposed the cooperative investigation to Arno C. Fieldner, chief, Fuels and Explosives Branch, Bureau of Mines; and assisted in supervising the experiment. The objectives of the experiment were to determine whether coal in place could be burned successfully and whether the burning could be controlled; the effect of the fire on the coal bed and the overlying strata; and the yield and quality of gas that could be obtained.
