A major difference between electronic and pyrotechnic detonators is that, in almost all but the simplest of blast layouts, computer software is required to plan a blast using electronic detonators. While it may be possible to program delay times without software, using only the manufacturer’s control hardware, the full potential of electronic detonators can only be realized through software. Until recently, the only software available has been provided by the suppliers of the electronic detonators. These usually have just enough features to create a hole layout and to assign times to the detonators in the holes. The software is also able to communicate only with the manufacturer’s detonators. This means that the client may be compelled to change several parts of the blasting process when a different delay system is adopted, from design through to implementation and reporting, even though these may be sub-optimal at the client’s mine. While many authors have demonstrated improvements in blasting outcomes using electronic detonators, very few have discussed how the delay times were calculated. Where the calculations are discussed, it is also obvious that the delay times must be monitored and re-evaluated as conditions in the mine change. For example, the principles of superposition and scaled distance, burden relief and energy cooperation between holes should be checked constantly for different locations within the mine, changes in rock properties, or even for differences between design and actual hole positions. The most common methods in blast design software to calculate delay times are inter-hole interval, relief contour and direct editing. Although they are simple in concept, they can result in fundamental errors if they are not applied correctly. The software for electronic blast designs should be capable of not just a timing calculation, but also of showing, to some degree, the impact and interaction of the calculated times.

The combination of chemical analysis techniques as XRF and measurement-while-drilling (MWD) technology in underground mining is a novel approach to gather comprehensive on-line information about physical and mineralogical data. In this work their integration is investigated aiming to delineate the ore/waste boundary. The input data analyzed come from a narrow vein underground mine, where the ore correspond to fluorite, and gathered in two production levels with complex mineralogical characteristics. Two approaches are followed to build a generalizable classification methodology and a site-specific model: a k-means clustering heuristic algorithm to define rock classes based on their physicochemical features, and a machine learning (ML) ensemble model trained with drilling parameters. For an imbalance class problem, a good recognition is obtained for the ore when is related to a high content of silica and for the waste. To predict the ore with low silica content it is necessary to integrate an analysis-while-drilling method to recognize the fluorite content when this mineral is embedded in different rocks. MWD can be employing for the lithologies recognition when representing different structural and mechanical properties between them.

In an effort to recover Polychlorinated biphenyls (PCB’s) that had leached into bedrock below the Hudson River in Upstate New York, a shaft and tunnel complex was designed that would allow installation of inclined and vertical wells into the zones of contamination to recover PCB’s by gravity. A joint venture of Merco Inc., of Lebanon, NJ, and Obayashi Corporation, of San Francisco, CA, was awarded the contract for constructing the first Tunnel Drain Collection System in the world. Conventional drill and blast techniques were the most economical method to construct the project but due to the presence of PCB’s and community concerns, innovative drill and blast practices were needed.

Homestake Mining Company's Open Cut Mine is located in Lead, South Dakota, in the northern Black Hills. The mine is within 300 feet of occupied residences on the south end, and within 1200 feet on the north end. Mining began at the north end of the open pit in October, 1983, and blasting related complaints began almost immediately. Noise and ground movement comprised the majority of the structural damage claims. As a result of these complaints, Homestake purchased a recording seismograph and began monitoring nearly every blast. In addition, the company hired a consultant to review Homestake's blasting and monitoring practices. He was also asked to do a single, one-time study of the cracks in six homes. This initial work led to Homestake monitoring all blasts with three seismographs and having South Dakota School of Mines and Technology do a year-long study of crack development and propagation in five homes in Lead.

If the iron ore loss is 15% in the process of mining, the total iron ore loss in the world will be about 461 million tons, this is equal to the total production of 230 iron ore mines each of which produces 2 million-tons of iron ore per year. Based on a series of blast tests in the Malmberget mine, this paper shows that ore recovery can be markedly increased by improving blasting technology such as choosing a correct primer position and making use of shock wave collision. The paper further suggests that a high ore recovery can not only reduce natural resource loss and mining cost but also prolong the life of a mine. In addition, the paper shows an example of reducing blast-caused rock damage in the roofs and walls of underground drifts (tunnels) by using new blasting methods in the Malmberget mine. Finally, the paper shows how the Malmberget mine has successfully reduced the ground vibrations, without adversely affecting fragmentation and ore recovery in sublevel caving mining.

A consequence of eroding this competence is the increased likelihood of explosives accidents. These are often catastrophic as demonstrated by accidents in Nigeria, Russia, Toulouse and Enschede. In addition to the serious loss of life there was the very significant damage to houses, domestic and industrial infrastructure and to the environment at a cost of many millions of Euros.

Construction began in 1984 for a 5 megawatt hydroelectric power retrofit at the O'Shaughnessy Dam for the City of Columbus, Ohio. The construction necessitated excavation of limestone bedrock up to 27 feet below the normal water level of the river downstream of the dam. Proximity to the river and difficult terrain resulted in an interesting and challenging construction project.

In 2008 a paper from the same source describing four actual cases of exposure of electronic detonators to lightning strikes was presented. It was shown that electronic detonators, like other initiation systems, are vulnerable to very close or direct lightning strikes. At the time of submitting this abstract no further incidents with lightning have been experienced. As a result of those original incidents, and in order to understand how the safety devices inside electronic detonators break down, two series of tests have been done, each with 2 detonator designs. In the first series detonators were subjected to capacitor discharges up to 6kV and 1kJ in energy. In the second series the intensity was increased to 800kV and 24kJ in energy. In the second series, more electrical energy was delivered to the detonator assembly than the explosive energy of the detonator. In both series both detonators showed a spectacular ability to resist very high discharge energies. The tests are described in detail with supporting photographs. The data for both pin-to-pin and pin-to-case (more relevant to lightning) are presented and discussed. The mechanism of breakdown of safety devices is now understood better and the learning is being used to design more robust products. This study introduces the X-2Mill solution, a refined two-step methodology aimed at optimizing blast designs by aligning explosive energy with rock properties. The approach employs the X-4Traits Model, which uses drill-monitoring data from both autonomous and manual drilling modes to develop two critical indexes: the Drilling Rock Factor (DRF) and the Drilling SAG Power Index (DSPI). The DRF integrates the Size-Energy Fan Model with rock fragmentation results and blast design parameters, while the DSPI adjusts Specific SAG Energy (SESAG) based on Bond’s theory, incorporating ore X80 results, SAG mill capacity (TPH), and power draw to estimate milling difficulty. To enhance prediction accuracy, the X-2Mill solution incorporates, to a Principal Component Analysis of the normalized drilling data, a Meta Machine Learning model with a 3D spatial function, accounting for information from surrounding drill holes. This integration improves the precision of the DRF and DSPI estimates. The methodology unfolds in two main steps: Step 1: Bench-Scale Pattern Design, involves defining the target P80 size for ore based on the SESAG and the DSPI. It also establishes target X80 sizes for waste and oxide materials and iterates to determine the optimal Burden x Spacing (BxS) using the Size-Energy Fan Model and the DRF. Step 2: Blast-Scale Selective Explosive Density/Energy focuses on refining explosive density on a hole-by-hole basis to achieve the specified X80 values for ore, waste, and oxide materials. The X-2Mill Solution was developed at Minera Escondida Limitada (MEL) using data from 162,761 blastholes across 356 blasts conducted over three mine expansions. This solution addresses the challenges of blasting harder and more difficult rock, particularly in the lower levels of the mine. By adapting the blast pattern and explosive density to the specific rock properties and ore/waste designation, the X-2Mill Solution aims to achieve precise size distributions and improve overall blasting performance. The results demonstrate that the X-2Mill Solution balances ore fragmentation to meet SAG mill throughput requirements while optimizing powder factor costs for waste material and maintaining digging efficiency. By efficiently distributing explosive energy, the solution not only enhances throughput but also improves blasting efficiency while ensuring stable slopes and minimizing fault activation.

During the last several years the FBI has been involved with a detailed study of explosives designed to replicate formulations utilized world-wide by terrorists. In addition, numerous formulations , based on literature and internet sources were examined. During the early stages of this work, a good many of the energetic mixtures studied were based on simple ammonium nitrate fertilizer. While the use of ammonium nitrate in commercial explosives is well studied and documented, the characteristics of the mixtures produced by criminals and terrorists have been less well researched. To aid law-enforcement in understanding the properties of these poorly understood formulations, a “cradle to grave” examination of their characteristics was conducted.

It has long been common practice to conduct drilling and blasting operations at surface quarries in the Midwest in close proximity to near-vertical highwalls. The main reasons for such an approach, and the limited use of adequate safety controls, can be associated with higher costs, operational constraints, lithological requirements, property boundary restrictions, inadequate quarry planning, or a lack of understanding of highwall risks. Working in proximity to highwalls, without effective controls, exposes personnel and equipment to increased risk of incidents. In recent history, there have been isolated incidents involving equipment damage, or personnel injury/fatality around the United States. However, the Midwest market has largely escaped the effects of such incidents, even though the exposure rate is high. Awareness about this matter greatly increased on January 19th, 2021, when a significant incident occurred at a quarry near Green Bay, Wisconsin. As a crew was loading a typical blast near a highwall, a ground fall occurred, and multiple rock fragments struck a laborer working on the bench below. This individual sustained significant and life-altering injuries.

Cerro Vanguardia is a known gold and silver deposit located in the province of Santa Cruz, Argentina. The mine has been in operation since 1998 and is thought to be one of the most important mines in Patagonia. More than 102 epithermal quartz veins have been identified in the area, with variable lengths, thicknesses, orientations and dips that constitute what is possibly one of the most extensive outcropping vein systems on earth. Veins are vertical and have variable depth. For this reason, the deposit is currently mined with a variety of extraction methods. This operation is made up of more than 60 open pits and 20 underground access ramps to exploit the deepest high grade narrow veins. This study is focused on the combination of underground exploitation with open pit blasting. That is, those production stopes in the upper levels of underground mines and their interaction with the damage levels in the final slope of open pit mines, as well as in the study of the impact of the generation of vibrations from the blasting of open pit mines and their influence on underground mines. Considering the current stage of the mine, after 20 years of operation, Cerro Vanguardia faces the need to mine deeper deposits in the face of increasing costs and declining grades. For this reason, it is essential to study the interaction of these exploitations. From a personnel safety point of view, this interaction must be well coordinated so as not to affect people and equipment. Likewise, the generation of vibrations due to blasting must be studied, which would produce new cracks, potentially generating overbreak and dilution. The main objective of this study is to determine the possible causes and influences of the blasting interaction in open pit and underground mines, seeking an optimization of the blasting process and a safety standard for personnel and equipment. To achieve these goals, this study includes a vibration monitoring plan to analyze the charge performance and determine rock constants. With the use of specialized software, damage modelling and simulations are used to determine values of damage in order to reduce overbreak. In addition, this plan contemplates the estimation of flyrock in blasting where underground work is connected to the surface, determining safety distances when carrying out a blast.
