The down hole hammer is widely used in specialty geotechnical construction. The common uses include tie-back anchor installation, micropile installation, and general soil/bedrock drilling operations. Veit used these techniques to develop a cost effective way of installing the foundation system for University of Minnesota Football Stadium. The soils present at the site of the stadium contained layers of concentrated cobbles and boulders. The geotechnical engineer recommended a driven pile system, and the base bid outlined in the project documents consisted of an H-Pile using a 14x73 pile section. Veit submitted an innovative alternate consisting of using a rotary percussion system to install a 12? O.D. pile. This paper will show that this pile type and installation method was the correct choice for the project. The design criteria for the compression, uplift, and lateral capacities and deflections were met, while eliminating pile damage. The method resulted in a significant cost savings to the University and maintained the project schedule.

Outside the oil and gas industry there is an increasing demand to install big piles for the foundation of ports, bridges, and wind-energy plants. This article introduces the design and techniques in using large MENCK pile driving hammers to install big foundation piles. Piles with a length up to 120 m, an outside diameter of 1.0 m to 3.15 m and weighing between 25t and 400t are being driven for these types of foundations. The required energy lies between 200 and 1700 kNm. Pile driving hammers that bring this amount of energy weigh from 38 to 300t and have a length between 10 and 20 m. Handling these big pile driving hammers requires a crawler crane on land or cranes on floating pontoons or jack-ups when working in water. Possible are either vertical or inclined piles, using a leader for inclinations up to 1:1.7 or up to 1:3 in a free riding version. Project descriptions demonstrate the versatility and practical use of the equipment under diverse operating conditions.

"BACKGROUNDLake Hamilton in Hot Springs, AR was created in 1932 when the Arkansas Power and Light Co. completed Carpenter Dam on the Ouachita River to generate electricity. Today, the 7,200-acre (2,914 hectares) impoundment is one of Arkansas’s most popular recreational and residential lakes.U.S. 70 crosses Lake Hamilton by means of a seven-span bridge featuring nine steel girders per span. Constructed between 1982 and 1984, the 1,410-foot long (430m) bridge carries four lanes of traffi c across the lake. The bridge is supported by six intermediate reinforced concrete piers composed of hammer heads, stems, footings and seals, which sit on the underlying rock. (See Figure 1). The bridge rises to a maximum of 33 feet (10m) above the surface of the lake and the footings and seals extend a maximum of 29.5 feet (9m) below the surface of the lake. The seals are situated on hard, fractured sandstone and shale.Routine underwater inspections in 1993 revealed large cracks in the lean seal concrete and refl ective cracks in the reinforced concrete footings. Infrastructure Engineers, Inc., The Arkansas State Highway and Transportation Department’s (AHTD) design consultant, then conducted an in-depth underwater inspection of the pier foundations. The investigation included cross-hole sonic logging, singlehole sonic logging, visual examination and strength testing of core samples, and petrographic analysis.The investigation revealed extensive cracking and low-strength concrete within the seals of all intermediate pier foundations. Many voids within the seal concrete had become fi lled with silt. There was evidence of continued seal deterioration between underwater inspections.AHTD and its engineers considered three rehabilitation solutions in the preliminary engineering stage: micropiles, a cofferdam supported concrete jacket, or a pile supported concrete jacket. The three alternatives were estimated to cost $1,250,000; $4,320,000; and $3,030,000 respectively. All three options would transfer the loads from the pier footing directly to the rock below, bypassing the seal concrete."

Ground vibrations are an unavoidable effect of driving piles and may pose a risk to nearby infrastructure and the comfort of adjacent occupants. Driven-pile-induced ground vibrations are known to vary widely based on ground conditions, pile material, and installation means and methods. A monitoring sensor to record ground vibrations during pile driving is necessary for understanding potential impacts to sensitive infrastructure and should be considered when implementing a monitoring program anticipating ground vibrations. The implementation of a vibration monitoring program historically relies on experiential-based decision-making, which may result in the costly vibration monitoring of low-risk infrastructure. Prior understanding of anticipated ground vibrations is necessary to create an appropriate monitoring program. A framework is proposed for organizing data from past monitoring programs and quantifying the anticipated risk of driven-pile-induced vibrations. An example of risk quantification from data imported to ]a cloud database is presented by comparing driven steel H-pile and prestressed precast concrete vibration monitoring measured and collected by Haley & Aldrich between 2010 and 2020. The methods presented within the example can be applied to quantify a first order approximation of risk for ground vibrations at proposed driven pile sites based on the measured performance of previous sites with similar ground characteristics and pile installation methods. The presented novel data managements tools allow for a quick aggregation of vibration data with similar site conditions.

Mai- Liao, in Yun Lin province of Taiwan, which was once a remote area on the coast of the South China Sea, has been developed into an offshore industrial complex. Approximately 100 million m3 of imported sand fill were used to reclaim the site from the sea with an overall area of almost 3.000 hectares. Land reclamation started in March 1994 and was completed at the end of 1998. A total of 41 industrial plants were constructed on the site, including an oil refinery, a naphta cracking plant, a cogeneration plant, a coal- fired power station, a heavy machinery plant, a boiler making plant, water purification plant, several petrochemical plants and a new harbour. From 1998 onwards, new plants were taken into operation in uninterrupted succession. The main purpose of the ground improvement by vibro- displacement, used predominantly to form the foundations of the oil storage tanks , was to reduce the liquefaction potential of the subsoil during earthquakes. The top layer across the site was treated by dynamic compaction before the installation of the stone columns. Heavy structures such as chimney- stacks and buildings were constructed on pre- cast concrete piles driven by diesel hammer. The earthquake design criteria specified an earthquake magnitude M = 7.3 and an acceleration a = 0.21 g. Stone columns were installed by the dry bottom feed process, which was controlled by an automatic monitoring system, to depths ranging from 13 to 20 m to provide flexible tank foundations. Installation of 1.500.000 linear m of stone columns commenced at the beginning of 1997 and was completed in August 2000. 60 % of the stone columns, in particular the deep ones, have been carried out by Bauer vibrators. The Chi- Chi earthquake ( M = 7.3 ) took place on 21 September 1999 and was followed by Cha- I earthquake ( M = 6.8 ) on 22 October 1999. A survey carried out after these earthquakes showed very positive results. The maximum observed settlement was 10 mm and none of the tanks suffered any damage.

Recently, large diameter drilled shafts are often used for foundations of large-scale marine bridges with high capacity and required to resist lateral loads. Steel casings are essential in supporting the hole-diving concrete installation of the drill shafts constructed in the sea. The casings, however, are usually not considered as the structural elements and their load bearing capacity is often overlooked in the design of drilled shafts. As the diameter of drilled shafts becomes larger, there are higher demands for more efficient and economical design of large-scaled drill shafts in the sea. Steel-concrete composite columns are popular for the superstructure of bridges, and the outer steel attached to the shaft increases the shaft resistance through confining the concrete. In this study, the lateral resistance of steel-concrete composite drilled shafts was evaluated quantitatively based on the numerical analysis. When steel casings are used as structural elements such as the composite columns. Ultimate lateral bearing capacity of composite drilled shafts with various diameters was numerically calculated through the 3D finite element analysis. For that, elasto-plastic model with the perfect plasticity is involved to capture the ultimate load. A commercial FEA program, MIDAS-GTS, is used in this study. Real field conditions of the west coast, Korea were examined to set up the ground conditions and pile lengths required for this parametric studies. Detailed characteristics of the stress and displacement distributions are evaluated for the better understanding on the mechanisms of the composite shaft behavior.

A load test program was performed on two auger cast piles constructed in the Inner Coastal Plain geology of North Carolina. Both test piles were installed through Coastal Plain deposits and into underlying Piedmont residual soils; one test pile was embedded into partially weathered rock (PWR). The recommended 100-ton design load was confirmed by a test program that included instrumenting the piles with strain gages. The two piles performed differently during the load tests due to the effect of embedment into PWR. Loading Test Pile No. 1, which was not embedded into PWR, to failure at about 230% of the design compressive load allowed for evaluation of the mobilization of the ultimate shaft and end bearing resistances. Mobilization pile resistance was evaluated by comparing shaft and end bearing resistances to top of pile deflection (?) normalized by the pile diameter (D). For Test Pile No. 1, the ultimate average shaft resistance was achieved at ?/D of about 7.5% and ultimate end bearing resistance at ?/D of about 9.5%. Test Pile No. 2, embedded into PWR, achieved a ?/D of only about 4% at 200% of the design load and was not loaded to failure. Shaft resistance was mobilized at a different rate within each individual geologic layer, i.e. ultimate shaft resistance did not occur simultaneously for all geologic layers. As the available total shaft resistance was exceeded and end bearing mobilized, the unit shaft resistances reduced from the peak values. A modified Davisson offset using ?/D of about 6.5% appears applicable for evaluating the ultimate capacity of auger cast piles in the Inner Coastal Plain.

Since patent expiration in 1973, ACIP piles are abundantly used in the United States, particularly in the southeast. However, most literature addresses driven piles constructed in sand and clay with lesser discussion of drilled piles. Conventional design methodologies (a- method, ß-method, SPT or CPT correlations, etc.) are based on data derived from numerous projects in a great variety of geologies. O’Neil (2001) notes that there are significant levels of uncertainty in the “universal” databases as evidenced by coefficients of variation of 0.35 to 0.40 for geotechnical parameters (su, SPT-Nvalue, etc.) used to estimate pile capacities.There is a need to develop local databases developed from data obtained from load tests that measure shaft resistance and end bearing. This paper presents the results of load tests conducted on axially loaded auger-cast-in-place piles constructed in the Inner Coastal Plain geology of North Carolina. Shaft resistance, end bearing, and movements that initiated mobilization of these resistances are described. The information presented herein can be used to refine geotechnical correlations and parameters applied in auger cast pile design methodologies."

Bitumen coatings have been successfully used to significantly reduce downdrag on piles. Thicker coatings of "soft" bitumens can accommodate downdrag so well that very little downdrag load is transferred to the pile. Many of the case histories describe better than 80 percent downdrag load reduction. Bitumen coatings have been used on several projects in Oregon. On the Mocks Bottom Bridge project (see Reference 1), experimentation and instrumentation confirmed the viability of bitumen coatings and provided insights for design and construction. Subsequent bridge projects have used this information and have raised issues to be resolved.

"For various reasons, dredging may become necessary in front of existing bulkhead walls, either for channel deepening or for environmental remediation of contaminated sediments. The removal of sediments at the base of bulkhead walls removes support for the toe of the wall that must be assessed. Evaluation of this impact can be problematic for aging bulkheads for which no design or construction records exist. This paper will address the steps that should be taken in investigation and analysis to assure proper assessment and means to address uncertainties and gaps in information. The steps include pre-investigation data review, field inspection, geotechnical and geophysical investigation tools, parametric analysis and design tools. Examples from several bulkhead assessment projects will be provided that include a variety of conditions and tools for application. The focus of the paper will be on the integration of technologies to assess bulkhead geometry, geotechnical properties and stability, structural safety and constructability issues with removal of support, and means of temporary and permanent stabilization for environmental applications.IntroductionBulkheads and quays have existed as long as there have been waterfront activities. Some of the earliest date back to 1200 B.C.E.(Raban, 1987), however in the United States few predate the eighteenth century. Most extant bulkhead structures, and all steel sheet pile bulkhead walls date from the early 20th century or later. These structures function to protect the shore from erosion, support landside activities, and serve as place to moor and offload vessels. Regardless of the age or usage of existing bulkheads, it is essential to assess and protect them if needed where removal of soils on the water side of the bulkheads is planned to dredging.Waterfront BulkheadsExisting bulkhead structures can be classified into two types: Cantilevered, and anchored. Cantilevered walls are completely supported by the soil on the water side, while anchored bulkheads are supported both by the soil on the water side and anchorage on the land side (Figure 1). Walls may be constructed of timber, steel, or concrete. Timber walls may be lagging with soldier piles, cribbing with soldier piles, or timber sheeted such as Wakefield walls (Figure 2). Steel bulkheads are most commonly constructed using sheet piling comprised of interlocking A or Z shapes, though some historic walls were constructed with flat sheets. Precast concrete sheet piling has also been used in construction of bulkhead walls. Anchorage may be provided by steel bars or tendons attached to deadmen, sheet piling, driven piles, or earth anchors."

"The remotely located Cockatoo Island iron ore mine off the Kimberly coast in Western Australia, which has been in operation since 1951, was recently expanded up to 50m below sea-level using staged construction of a rock-filled seawall around the open cut mining operation. The most recent stage of the seawall expansion required a seepage reducing cut-off barrier to be installed through the seawall into underlying seabed sediments. A line of grout holes at 1m centres was proposed to form the seepage barrier, with grouting extending 17m below the top of the seawall. Top hammer drilling techniques were used to penetrate the 12m deep rockfill to seabed level, and permeation grouting carried out within the rockfill to fill voids and stabilise material around grout holes. The local 10m tides meant that tidal washout of fines and grout would be a major risk, and so a combination of cementitious and chemical grout was used to create rapid gel times. Following permeation grouting, holes were re-opened to allow jet grouting to hydraulically mix and grout permeable seabed sediments below the seawall. Using the duplex jet grout system in a single pass to 17m below platform level, the jet grouting was extended upwards into the seawall fill itself to overlap with the earlier permeation grouting. Finally a soil/cement mixed capping trench was installed using slurry trenching techniques with soil/cement/bentonite mixed backfill in order to complete the grout treatment. The approach taken allowed considerable onsite flexibility in technique. An automated slurry batching plant allowed adjustment of mixes to suit the varying subsurface conditions which were encountered during the works.IntroductionLate in 2013 Wagstaff Piling was engaged to install a seepage barrier through a rockfilled seawall built to allow expansion of sub-sea iron ore mining operations on Cockatoo Island off the remote Kimberley coast in the North West of Western Australia. Earlier stages of seawall construction had used a variety of different construction techniques with varied success, and the history of sub-sea mining on the island had been plagued with failures, including failures in the slope of the seawall itself, hanging wall failure underneath and inside the seawall, and footwall failures as the ore was mined leaving the rock face inclined at 55 degrees, parallel to the bedding. The current expansion, known as the Stage 4 expansion, was more tightly constrained by the pit geometry and available materials than previous seawall expansion stages that adopted clay core and sheet pile seepage barrier solutions. In Stage 4, an innovative grout curtain seepage barrier solution was selected to ultimately provide the necessary cut-off to allow access to high grade ore, while protecting the mine from inundation by the sea."

NCHRP Synthesis 418 (2011) entitled, “Developing Production Pile Driving Criteria from Test Pile Data” details the occurrence of dichotomy between pile Skin resistance and pile Tip resistance mobilizations at different times for different hammer blows during pile driving operations. With increasing usage of High Strain Dynamic Testing (HSDT) the engineering community started paying more attention to this occurrence of dichotomy resulting in overdriving, pile damage, increased claims, and loss of time. To overcome the dichotomy limitations of HSDT, NCHRP recommends, “the use of superposition to combine the back-calculated tip resistance from a blow on initial drive or from redrive with the back-calculated skin resistance from the early blows at the beginning of restrike”. However, the current practice of external mounted gauges and signal matching for a single blow are unable to evaluate independently the Skin resistance and Tip resistance to achieve the goal of determining the optimum Total Pile Capacity using the superposition. This paper discusses advancements of science and technology with sensors embedded at the pile top and pile tip, the data collected is analyzed by the state-of-the-art FDOT Method to determine Skin and Tip resistances independently for every blow. Independent Tip and Skin resistances each with a Resistance Factor can be summed up to obtain optimum Total Pile Capacity. Additional benefits of determining independent Skin and Tip resistances include obtaining lost skin capacity due to scour, due to pre-drilling/preforming and uplift tension capacity. Furthermore, the benefits of embedded sensors include increased quality control/quality assurance through 100% testing, accelerated construction, life cycle monitoring and asset management.

This paper examines a complex earthwork project in the Washington DC metro area that had project delivery directly impacted by questionable instrumentation monitoring data. The case study summarizes the impacts to the project caused by questionable instrumentation data and reveals how the authors were able to utilize data to extract meaningful insights. The case study also demonstrates how clear data presentation became a key factor in maintaining stakeholder trust and facilitated progress of the project schedule. The case study highlights key points to collecting high quality instrumentation data, approaches to assess and improve value of the data collected, and techniques to reduce and interpret questionable data.

The Detroit Water and Sewerage Department (DWSD) provides water and wastewater services to the Greater Detroit Metropolitan Area. Sewerage is treated at the DWSD Wastewater Treatment Plant (WWTP) located at 9300 W. Jefferson Street south of the City of Detroit, Figure 1. PARTICIPANTS Engineering and design of the project for the DWSD was performed by Harza Engineering Company, Inc., C.C. Johnson & Malhotra, P.C. and their sub-consultants, including Worley Engineering and Wade Trim. The Prime Contractor is a Joint Venture of Traylor Brothers, Inc. and Jay Dee Construction. The shaft drilling and riser installation was performed by The Millgard Corporation in joint venture with the Prime Contractor (MTJD). The selection of specialized drilling equipment and the supervision and performance of the access shaft and riser installations was primarily the responsibility of The Millgard Corporation (TMC).

The construction industry has one of the largest numbers of injuries compared to other industries. Thus, reducing accidents and determining construction risks are extremely important. One of the essential steps for construction safety management is hazard identification and risk assessment, since the most unmanageable risks are from unidentified hazards. While the urban rail transit systems are being developed rapidly in almost all major cities of India, adjoining Existing Building Structures and historic sites are facing possible threats of unexpected damages and accidents. The protection of these structures becomes one of the major challenges specifically when the infrastructure being developed involves construction of underground tunnels passing through old cities. The assessment of settlement induced damage on buildings during the preliminary phase of tunnel excavation projects, is nowadays receiving greater attention. Analyses at different levels of detail are performed on the surface building in proximity to the tunnel, to evaluate the risk of structural damage and the need of mitigation measures. The current paper presents current practices being adopted in India for prediction and excavation of tunnelling induced ground movement and building damage risk-assessment. The paper highlights empirical and numerical approaches towards predicting settlement induced damages on buildings during the tunnelling, detailed step by step methodologies for conducting building condition surveys, evaluating associated hazards, and adopting adequate building risk identification and mitigation methods. The paper also discusses associated technical and contractual challenges and highlights way forward to overcome them.

Europe’s second-largest seaport has installed a new combi wall consisting of pipe piles, sheet piles and inclined shaft grouted piles to support it. The new Liebherr piling rig with swinging leader was used to drive shaft grouted piles into a very dense soil layer of sand with glauconite. The 60 m Liebherr swinging leader was suspended at an inclination of 45° via a suspension frame and suspension ropes from the crawler crane. This inclined installation of shaft grouted piles via freely hanging swinging leader, as used for this project, is unique in Belgium. Moreover, the pile length of 43 m is a novelty for this type of pile. Shaft grouted piles consist of a steel profile with a separate box-like pile shoe with an open top. A thin grout is injected via an injection pipe during driving and emerges just above the pile shoe. As the pile is driven further down, so compressing the ground, the space above the pile foot is immediately filled with grout under pressure. This piling system is ideally suited for the transfer of high tensile loadings. It is a method to increase geotechnical load-bearing capacity and to reduce negative skin friction during pile driving.

"The Oxford Hydroelectric Station was a unique project that incorporated a variety of dam strengthening methods to stabilize the facility in order to meet the standards required by Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC). The dam stability and Probable Maximum Flood (PMF) remediation work consisted of (1) construction of a new emergency spillway; (2) installation of 75 high capacity rock anchors; (3) construction of an anchored concrete powerhouse buttress; (4) construction of cast-in-place and sheetpile flood walls; and (5) design and construction of a permanent soil nail wall. INTRODUCTIONThe Oxford Hydroelectric Station is one of 11 hydroelectric facilities owned and operated by Duke Power along the Catawba/Wateree River. The Catawba River originates in the foothills of the Appalachian Mountains just west of Morganton, North Carolina. The river flows east out of the mountains and, at a point just below the Oxford Dam, the Catawba River turns and heads southeast. The Catawba River continues to flow southeast past Charlotte and into South Carolina where it eventually becomes the Wateree River. The Wateree River eventually flows in to the Atlantic Ocean.Located a few miles east of Hickory, North Carolina, the Oxford Dam and Hydroelectric facility is in the upper reach of the Catawba River. Oxford Dam creates the third impoundment along the river known as Lake Hickory. Lake Hickory is well known locally for providing many outdoor activities such as boating, jet skiing, canoeing and fishing. The dam and powerhouse were put into operation in the spring of 1928.Key features of the dam include a short embankment section on the south end of the structure, a 391-foot (119m) long south bulkhead and powerhouse, 540-foot (165m) long gated spillway section and a 235-foot (71.6m) long north bulkhead. The maximum height of the dam is approximately 100-feet (30m) from the crest to the dam/rock interface. (See Figure 1).The work associated with this project is the result of licensing requirements of the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) which mandates that all hydroelectric facilities have the capacity to safely discharge runoff created by a critical rainfall event defined as the probable maximum flood (PMF). Duke Power, a division of Duke Energy (DUKE) submitted an initial PMF report in 1992 which indicated that at the Oxford Dam would be overtopped by approximately 10-feet of water during the modeled PMF event. Given the duration and depth of the overtopping, significant damage to the facility and a possible breach could result. Therefore, modifications to the existing facility were necessary to satisfy the report of the PMF model."

"The University of California’s new Berkeley Art Museum and Pacific Film Archive will showcase a collection of art and film in a facility that pairs an existing 1930s-era printing press facility with a new, architecturally unique auditorium wing. The centerpiece of this adaptive-reuse project is the existing 3- story art-deco Administrative Building, which will be integrated into the new museum and provide approximately 18,000 square feet of usable space. Degenkolb Engineers, as the shoring engineer of record, along with Condon Johnson & Associates Inc., the shoring contractor, worked together with general contractor Plant Construction Company to design and build a temporary structure to facilitate the complex retrofit, renovation, and expansion of the Admin Building. This paper will discuss the challenges faced by the design and construction team, the sustainable solutions implemented on the project, and the collaboration between teams to meet the unique constraints of the project and the site.INTRODUCTION AND PROJECT BACKGROUNDThe Berkeley Art Museum and Pacific Film Archive (BAMPFA), which currently resides in a 1970s-era post-modern concrete structure just south of the University of California Berkeley (UCB) campus, was in need of a new home after an engineering evaluation revealed that the building possessed seismic deficiencies. The South Bank Place project comprised the redevelopment of the iconic Shell Corporation headquarters in Waterloo, located on the Southbank of the River Thames in central London. The site was originally developed in the 1950’s and due to the monitoring of the underlying Bakerloo Line tunnels by the Building Research Station it has become a seminal case history for the long term swelling behaviour of London Clay. The redevelopment, undertaken by a joint venture of Canary Wharf Group and Qatari Diar, included demolition of the existing building (with the exception of the main towers) retention of the existing basement structure and the construction of eight new mixed use buildings, up to 31 storeys in height. The foundations for the new buildings varied according to the building height and the below ground constraints. Two of the buildings are partially founded in reused under reamed piles that were installed as part of the original 1950’s development. The paper describes the novel methodology developed to assess the re-use of the under reamed piles which builds on the guidance published by CIRIA and the BRE for straight shafted piles. The paper also describes the physical investigations and numerical analyses undertaken as part of the assurance process and the procurement of latent defect insurance by the client.
