"Norm calculation procedures originally designed principally for igneous rocks are very rigid in their application and, in general, do not utilize important alteration minerals. For instance, volatile components are essential constituents of many metasomatic rocks but either are not used or are not used effectively in determining normative minerals by the CIPW norm or Niggli-Barth norm procedures. Our approach to determining norms for metasomatic rocks allots all major, minor and volatile constituents to a set of standard normative minerals which are commonly observed as products of hydrothermal alteration. A useful procedure is to have a metasomatic norm approximate the mode as closely as possible. Petrographic information helps to provide the necessary mineralogical constraints. With the recognition of an immobile component and knowledge of sampling and analytical errors in lithogeo chemical data, it is possible to recast norms into amounts of alteration minerals relative to a given amount (100 grams) of parent rock. Combining these results with the calculations of absolute loss or gain of individual chemical constituents and considering errors (e) for an appropriate confidence level, an overall (net) material exchange equation can be presented as follows:<equation>where all items have extensive units (e.g., grams). The model includes the initial and final mineralogy of rocks (evident in the field) as well as gains and losses of specific elements. Only those constituents whose calculated losses and gains are significantly different from zero are retained in the above model, and only the normative minerals with abundances significantly different from zero are included in the model (equation). One advantage of the chemico-mineralogic model is that parent rock and product are modeled in mineralogical terms that are familiar to and easily usable by exploration geologists."

Economic viability of base metal mining is complicated by a volatile market that can cause fluctuations in the growth and stability of the mining industry. Nickel is mined primarily for use in manufacturing industrial stainless steel and plating materials. It is essential that nickel production be sufficient to respond to current and future market demand. A Post-Pillar cut and fill mining complex is currently producing nickel sulfide in Northern Manitoba. From 2006 this area has shown a steady increase in the annual production, rising from 11 million pounds to 25 million pounds in 2010, and accounting for 33% of the total production for the Manitoba Operations. It is expected that fine-tuning the mining process can safely enhance ore recovery, improve production consistency, and increase economic viability of the deposit. The Post-Pillar Optimization study was initiated by the local technical and operational departments at the mine and analyzed from July 2010 to March 2011. The purpose of this study was to determine if portions of non-recoverable pillars can be slashed without jeopardizing pillar strength. This ideal case would optimize ore recovery and reduce variability in the ore mining rate. Numerical modeling and geo-mechanical material properties analyses, completed by the rock mechanics group, define the maximum drift width at 32 feet and the minimum pillar width at 18 feet. Thus, it was suggested that up to 3 feet could be slashed from two sides of the standard 24 foot pillars without damaging ground integrity. The field data collected indicates that additional ore could be recovered without compromising the safety of the workplace and the integrity of the complex. Consequently, technical and operational groups work jointly to achieve pillar optimization. Approximately 500,000 pounds of nickel was extracted from the complex via pillar optimization from July 2010 to March 2011. Economic analyses show the pillar optimization method developed for the mining complex is a proven, value-added opportunity. The mining complex remains a safe workplace and has retained ground integrity.

World copper refining tankhouse practices have been surveyed. This survey is a supplement to previous surveys that have been carried out in the 1987, 1991, 1995, 1999, 2001 and 2003. On a world basis, process technology trends include the further installation of automated electrode handling systems including permanent cathode systems, automatic anode preparation and cathode handling machines, section switches, fully automatic cranes and polymer concrete cells. General plant process control has increased with more automation of material handling in the copper refining tankhouse. The general trend for most greenfield copper refining projects remains in eastern Asia.

"This paper has reference in a general way to the region extending from the north shore of lake Buron to the northern limit of the elliptical-shaped area generally known as the Sudbury Basin, and more especially to the district lying south of the Basin (Fig. 3). Attention is concentrated mainly on the structure of the district and, as space does not permit of much geological description, it is assumed that the reader has some knowledge of the general geology. "At the May 15, 2006 and the May 1, 2007 Canadian Securities Administrators (CSA) Canadian Institute of Mining, Metallurgy and Petroleum (CIM) meetings in Vancouver and Montreal, CSA requested CIM consider certain issues arising out of the CSA review of Technical Reports and public disclosure, in general, regarding the practice of estimation and reporting of Mineral Resources and Mineral Reserves. The following is a summary of the issues raised by the CSA and the responses of the CIM.Preamble: At the May 15, 2006 and the May 1, 2007 Canadian Securities Administrators (CSA)-Canadian Institute of Mining, Metallurgy and Petroleum (CIM) meetings in Vancouver and Montreal, CSA requested CIM consider certain issues arising out of the CSA review of Technical Reports and public disclosure, in general, regarding the practice of estimation and reporting of Mineral Resources and Mineral Reserves. The following is a summary of the issues raised by the CSA and the responses of the CIM Reserve Definition and the CIM Estimation Best Practices Committees (the Committees). This information is intended to provide the Qualified Person (QP) with further guidance when estimating Mineral Resources and Mineral Reserves and in preparing a technical report written under National Instrument 43-101 (NI 43-101). Several members of the CIM Reserve Definition Committee, the CIM Estimation Best Practices Committee and some members of the Committee for Mineral Resources International Reporting Standards have reviewed these issues and provide the following commentary.Issue 1. - CSA requested CIM review and comment on the selection of an appropriate commodity price to be used in Mineral Resources and Mineral Reserves estimates.Commodity prices are used in the estimation of Mineral Resources and Mineral Reserves and in the economic analysis of a property. In times of rapidly changing commodity prices, or when prices are at the extreme ends of a commodity price cycle, the QP has a difficult job in selecting an appropriate commodity price.• The selection of appropriate technical variables, including commodity price, is clearly the responsibility of the Qualified Person (QP). The QP must describe the reasons for selecting these variables, including price, in the technical report.• The definition of a ""Mineral Resource"" contains the wording ""reasonable prospects for economic extraction,"" therefore, a QP must select economic parameters, including commodity price, that will result in an estimate of Mineral Resources and Mineral Reserves that have ""reasonable prospects for economic extraction""."

A petroleum well that is not in use because it has ceased to produce oil/gas economically and dry holes are referred to as abandoned wells. Once a well is abandoned it is plugged with cement and can take anywhere from two days up to a week to cure depending on the number of plugs in the well. Since plugging a well costs capital, most wells are abandoned at the lowest possible cost and with the minimum obligations set by regulation agencies. These wells can present an enduring liability to petroleum companies. However, the depth and abundance of abandoned petroleum wells makes them an economically attractive source of geothermal energy. Geothermal energy harvested from an oil/gas well is a renewable energy source as long as it is extracted in a sustainable manner. The energy can be used to generate electricity, used directly for heating, incorporated into a water desalination process, or used by a heat pump for heating/cooling applications. In this paper we examine the possibility of extracting geothermal energy from abandoned oil/gas wells by studying the heat transfer in underground geothermal heat exchangers installed in these wells. The design configurations for the geothermal heat exchangers embedded inside a petroleum borehole can be a u-tube design or a shell and tube design (i.e. double pipe). Using in-situ gathered information from some representative petroleum boreholes, the effects of key parameters such as geothermal gradient, ground temperature values, and the flow inside of the tubes are evaluated. In order to provide a constant power production the inlet temperature can be adjusted to keep the difference between outlet and inlet temperatures equivalent. Higher differences between inflow and outflow temperatures will result in a less sustainable load put on the in-situ geothermal energy. Adding insulation to certain sections of the designs can minimize the transfer of thermal energy from the fluid to the surroundings. Insulation can also limit the thermal loss between the inflow and outflow tubes in the shell and tube design. Minimizing the energy loss of these designs leads to an increase in the outlet temperature, meaning a higher grade of heat. The sustainability of long term geothermal heat extraction is a balance between the rate at which geothermal energy is extracted and the rate at which the ground formation can replace this heat. Higher outlet temperatures can lead to a larger amount of power generation, and a higher coefficient of performance for heat pump applications.

Peñoles is a Mexican Company, and since 1887 ranks as one of Mexico's main natural resources industrial groups.Peñoles Mining Group includes six operating Companies producing mainly gold, silver, lead, and zinc. All mines are underground operations, and the ore is milled in ten concentrator plants near the mine sites. Plant throughputs range from 150,000 to 810,000 tonnes per year.This paper gives a general view of the Peñoles Mining Group, their type of deposits, mining methods, and mineral processing work practices.The paper also discusses some of Peñoles work philosophies and measures being adopted to become more competitive. Due to the small size of the deposits, the mining methods used and size of the concentrator plants are somehow different to those typically seen in large deposits. "Many water inflows in Saskatchewan potash mines are linked to salt anomalies. Potash ore and three anomalies in the PCS Cory potash mine in the Patience Lake Member of the Prairie Evaporite Formation were studied to understand the processes involved in their formation. Another goal was to find geological indicators of the proximity of anomalies. A geological model that relates the potash to the salt anomalies has been developed.Up to five post-burial facies may be recognized. These range from carbonate-mud collapse breccias to bedded sylvinite, and probably result from post-burial leaching. In this model, the same fluids that caused widespread recrystallization and possibly enrichment of the potash salts, started by dissolving huge cavities in the evaporites. The effects of the leaching were highly variable, indicated by selectively preserved delicate laminae and chevron textures, to deformed and totally dissolved salt beds. In at least two major events, Late Devonian and Cretaceous, collapse structures may have acted as conduits for overlying formation waters to cause pervasive leaching and recrystallization of the Prairie Evaporite Formation.Geological indicators of the proximity of an anomaly may include: a change in insoluble seam color from greenish-gray to mottled brown and greenish-gray, unusual local increases in ore grade, large patches (e.g., >200 cm2) of sylvite-poor potash crosscutting units near the top of the ore wne, and drops in topography > 10 m of the marker seams. Anhydrite was more common in an anomaly than in ore. The local abundance of anhydrite in ore may indicate the proximity of some salt anomalies. Once an anomaly has been encountered, indicators of a major collapse feature may include: stretched clay seams, folded beds, small collapse features (1 m to 20 m), numerous washouts, or split clay seams with injected salt. Any number, or none, of these indicators may be found close to a major collapse feature."

A large magnesite-talc body is locared in Delora Township, 11 km sourh-southeasr of Timmins, Onrario. The deposit occurs in part of an Archean greensrone belt dominated by volcanic and sedimenrary rocks and large bodies of ultramafic intrusions. The magnesite-talc zane is abour 1800 m long, has a maximum width of 300 m and has been drilled ro 120 m below surface. Chemical analyses of rhe main carbonate zane average 20 ro 28% soluble MgO (magnesia), 5 ro 6% rota/ iron oxide and less rhan 0.1 % CaO (lime). Mineralogically, the zane consists of approximately 54% magnesite, 28% rate, /5% quartz and 3% hematire. Perrographic srudies suggest that rhe various assemblages of magnesite, rate, quartz and serpentine were derived from a parenr serpenrinire (after dunire). An early carbonitization stage, which produced a high-magnesite, low-talc assemblage, preceded a farer decarbonitizarion stage, which formed rhe main magnesite-talc assemblage. Despite a favourably low calcium oxide content of rhe magnesite-talc rock, considerable iron in the magnesire /at rice has limited the quality of the beneficiared product: rhe besr flotation concentrate to dare yields 92 to 94% dead-burned MgO. The Tartan Lake deposit 12 km northeast of Flin Flon, Manitoba, was discovered in March of 1984 during the investigation of a VLF anomaly. The discovery hole intersected 16.83 metres averaging 21 gm Au/tonne. Since then, 99 holes, over 21,000 metres, have been drilled outlining 419,491 tonnes grading 11.79 gm Au/tonne in a di stinct group of mineralized lenses referred to as the Main Zone. Three other mineralized zones are known on the property but no reserves have been allowed for these, the South , East and Base Line zones. The Main Zone consists of seven parallel, east-west striking, quartz lenses. The lenses dip steeply to the north and plunge steeply west to northwest. Lens number l strikes for 160m and extends vertically to the 90m level. Within th is lens there is a 60m interval of low grade materi al. Lens number 2 is located about 5-l0m within the foo twall of Lens number I. Near surface this lens stri kes for 40m, at 200m level the strike length increases to 200 m. To date the deepest mineralization on Lens 2 has been intersected at a vert ical depth of 527m. Five smaller lenses are located in the foo twall of Lens 2 , containing gold va lues similar to the two main lenses but erratically distributed. The South Zone, located 100m south of the Main Zone, strikes east-west fo r l00m above the 100m level. The East Zone, found 230m east of the Main Zone, strikes fo r 80m and may possibly be an ex tension of the South Zone. The Base Line Zone is located 275m south of the Main Zone. Sporadic, but very significant gold intersections have been obta ined1n all three zones. Gold-bearing quartz-ca rbonate tourmaline veins are generally confined to a silicous crystal tu ff hori zon. The crystal tuff exhi bits fi ve distinct types of alteration: silicification, sericitization, ca rbonati zation, chlorit ization and pyritization. Silicification has resulted in a perasive addition of silica and the generation of multiple quartz veins. Sericiti zation is restricted to the crystal tuff. All rock units are pervasively carbonatized . Ankerite is abundant in the quartz veins and within the shear zones, particul arly those located along the chilled margin of a nearby gabbro-diorite intrusion. Chloritization is widely spread th roughout the rock units, while pyritization fo rms a broad alteration halo associated with the orebody. Sulphide accesso ry minerals associated with the gold , whi ch fo r the most part appears to be free, are chalcopyrite and pyrite. Generally, the higher grade gold values are related to an increased content of sulphides in the qua rtz veins. The average sulphide content in the deposit is less than 5 %.

A fleet management system such as Minestar with CAES and Aquila could basically be defined as a tool for production control and distribution of drill and load maps, but should also be considered as continuous improvements and a never ending production study. The objective of production studies is to establish facts to be used for production improvements. In a mine operation there are many issues to improve and they spread from achieving productions plans, drilling precision, improved spotting while loading to equipment utilisation. This gives that there is not one single key value to present; we need to manage information presented on maps, as trends, graphs, tables and pre-calculated data for ?free-use? normally in spread-sheets to be able to turn data into useful information.

Requirements of both local permitting and international fundraising are forcing increasing numbers of projects in Russia and CIS to carry out dual technical studies. The principal focus of Russian mining project design is to satisfy local regulatory requirements. However, the technical documents are not generally accepted by international banks for project finance outside Russia. Similarly, international study documents are not accepted for permitting in Russia. The purpose of this paper is to compare and contrast Russian and international approaches to mine technical studies and draw conclusions from this. The Russian design and permitting system is centered around two key statutory technical documents termed the TEO Konditsy and the TEO Project. These documents are subject to regulatory approval and are broadly equivalent to the international prefeasibility study and the feasibility study respectively. A comparison of study criteria suggests similar approaches are used for the main technical disciplines in project design by the time projects are at the point of construction, but there is divergence on environmental matters where the OVOS (Russian ESIA equivalent) differs from an ESIA in some significant areas. The key differences relate to project footprint, level of technical detailed required for baseline studies, level of public consultation, consideration and disclosure of information, labour, coverage of community and social issues and the preparation of a Social and Environmental Management System (SEMS). It has been noted that the Russian Design Institutes often leave the detailed economic analysis until after the TEO Konditsy. A common problem is design teams tend to look for ?technological solutions? without due concern for project economics. The end result of this can be mines that are overcapitalized and hence sub-optimal. It can be concluded that Design Institutes have the monopoly on Russian permitting reports and this is likely to continue. Similarly, Russian institutes generally do not prepare feasibility studies to international standards and this is likely to continue to be the case. Therefore to achieve the requirement of dual technical studies, the international consultants and Russian Design Institutes will need to cooperate on a joint work program. Key issues will be to ensure the most appropriate option studies are carried out at the right stages, that project economics are considered throughout the study, and that the environmental work program covers the additional studies necessary for the ESIA.

"The Central Patricia mine is in the greenstone belt north of lake Sc. Joseph in northwestern Ontario. It is 90 miles north of Allanwater on the Canadian National railway and 220 miles east of the Manitoba boundary. The unusual feature of the ore of this mine is that the gold does not occur in quartz but in sulphide minerals filling fractures in iron formation.AREAL GEOLOGYThe rocks of the area in which the mine occurs belong to the Early Precambrian. They consist · of andesite lavas and tuff interbedded with greywacke-like sediments and iron formation . A siliceous phase of the sediments lying north and south of the greywacke enclosing the ore-bearing iron formation in places resembles a sheared and sericitized quartz porphyry. This is shown in the legend of Fig. 1 as quartz porphyry and quartzite, but it is possible that the quartz porphyry-like phase is sediment. A northwest- striking dyke of diabase crosses the property 3,000 feet east of the shaft ( Fig. 1).IRON FORMATIONAlthough there are numerous bands of iron formation in the v1cm1ty of the mine, ore has been found to date in only one main and two lesser zones. The iron formation bands range in width from a few inches to 60 feet, and are interrupted along their strike by gaps that are parallel and rake to the east at about 65°. The iron formation is definitely banded and laminated."

Introduction During the past few years emphasis has been placed on the importance of major faults, fault zones, and associated structures in localizing ore deposition. This interest has developed partly through experience in mining camps in other parts of the world, and partly by the discovery of such structures associated with ore deposits in the Abitibi region, northwestern Quebec. The recognition of these structures has been brought about chiefly by detailed mapping that has been gradually extended along most of the southern gold belt of Quebec and across adjacent parts of Ontario. In the Chibougamau region of northern Abitibi, progress has been made in the mapping of major faults by using aeroplane photographs with a scale of about 1,000 feet to one inch for field mapping. These studies have shown that many large faults occur in the Abitibi region; also that there is a relationship, direct or indirect, between faults and mineral deposition. The faults are, however, of more than one type and age, and this should be clearly appreciated in any planned programme for prospecting this great region adequately. The information regarding faults and structure is so widely scattered that it is difficult to obtain a clear picture of the essential features, either for planned prospecting or for analysis and development of ideas for further study. This paper, as originally conceived, was intended only to discuss and compare the regional structure of southern Abitibi county-where detail mapping and diamond drilling have been carried on intensively for the past ten years-and of the less well-known Chibougamau district, in order that the experience gained in the one area could be usefully applied in the other. However, a comparison of the two districts leads naturally to a consideration of their common relationship to certain major late-Precambrian structures that form an important northeast system across the southeastern part of the Canadian Shield.

Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) and Feasibility Studies (FS) were carried out to evaluate the potential use of treated acid mine drainage (AMD) occurring at the Kingsmill Tunnel in the Central Andes of Peru. The 11-km long tunnel drains the underground works of the Morococha Mining District and discharges about 1.25 m3/sec of AMD directly into the Yauli River, which is located within the Amazon Basin. The communities living downstream cannot use the Yauli River water due to its low pH and elevated concentrations of metals (e.g., Cu, Zn, Fe, Mn, As, Cd) and sulfate. Studies carried out for this project included technical feasibility, EIA, economic viability and social impact assessment phases. During the "Technical Feasibility" phase, the treated AMD was produced by simulating a high density sludge (HDS) lime neutralization/precipitation process and was evaluated for various potential uses. Mining companies located in Morococha, in particular Centromin Peru S.A., and the Water Works Company of the City of Lima (Sedapal) collaborated with Golder Associates during the studies. The Canadian International Development Agency (CIDA) provided the financial assistance. The results of the physical, chemical, biological and toxicological analyses demonstrated that the treated AMD could be used for supplementing the drinking water supply of Lima and for agricultural (e.g., irrigation and livestock) and recreational purposes. Process design and scale-up parameters were also determined for the implementation of the full-scale treatment facility to the site. The use of the treated AMD as a drinking water supplement would be economically feasible.

In the leaching of chalcopyrite with sulfuric acid solutions, the copper extraction rate reaches a maximum at a given redox potential. This article reviews our studies on the determination of the optimum redox potential for chalcopyrite leaching. Shaking flask and column leaching experiments for a chalcopyrite concentrate were performed under various conditions, and the results were analyzed using a normalized redox potential defined from a reaction model assuming the formation of an intermediate CU2S from chalcopyrite. Factors, such as metal ion concentrations, solid/liquid ratio, and presence of iron-oxidizing bacteria, caused significant variations in the copper extraction versus time plots. However the copper extraction rate versus normalized redox potential plots were independent of the above factors and the copper extraction rate reached a maximum at the normalized redox potentials around 0.43. Converting the normalized redox potential to the solution redox potential gives the optimum redox potential for chalcopyrite leaching as a function of cupric and ferrous ion concentrations. This semi-empirical equation can be used to predict the optimum redox potential during leaching operation, and is useful to design the redox-controlled heap leaching for chalcopyrite.

The cyanoaurate anions [Au(CN)2]- and [Au(CN)4]- are shown to be useful building blocks for synthesizing supramolecular coordination polymers. For the gold(I) unit, aurophilic interactions often increase the structural dimensionality of the system and can impart increased thermal stability to the metal-polymers produced. A series of polymers of the form M[Au(CN)2]2(Ligand)x have also been prepared and show large colour changes upon changing the ligand, thus illustrating a sensor-type application. Both building blocks can mediate significant antiferromagnetic and ferromagnetic interactions between transition-metal centres in the polymers. For the gold(III) unit, no metal-metal interactions are observed, although weak Au-N(cyano) interactions control the intermolecular packing. Several structural examples of cyanoaurate-based coordination polymers are presented, including 2-D and 3-D arrays and a supramolecular square.

"Uranium, thorium and yttrium have been recovered, since the 1950s, from pyritic quartz-pebble conglomerates occurring in the basal sediments of the Quirke syncline at Elliot Lake. Gold, an element of interest in similar type deposits occurring worldwide, is a very minor constituent of the Elliot Lake conglomerates because the provenance area of the sediments had few gold-bearing rocks.Uranium, thorium and rare elements are found in resistate and diagenetic minerals occurring in the matrix of the conglomerates. The valuable elements are recovered from the acid soluble minerals during the milling process.Large uranium reserves occur in mines found on both limbs of the Quirke syncline. Major reserves are being developed on the South Limb of the syncline, where the Stanleigh Mine, among four past-producers, has been reactivated.IntroductionUranium and thorium commonly occur in anomalous amounts in coarse basal sediments. Radioactivity in basal conglomeratic sediments is generally attributable to resistate minerals, that rarely occur in concentrations high enough to be of economic significance. One type of basal conglomerate found worldwide, in Precambrian cratonic basins, has uranium or uranium and gold concentrations large enough to be of economic interest. Principal among the occurrences are the pyritic quartz-pebble conglomerates of the Huronian in Canada, of the Witwatersrand in South Africa and at Jacobina in Brazil.The uranium and gold mineralization of these conglomerates was derived from provenance areas where both elements occurred and were later concentrated through source degradation and deposition in placers in a reducing environment. Only the Huronian conglomerates, generally much richer in uranium but with negligible gold, have been exploited solely for their uranium content.The uraniferous conglomerates of the Huronian at Elliot Lake, 500 km north of Toronto, continue to represent a major world source and supply of uranium concentrate."
