Fuel cell application to mining has been indicated to be potentially beneficial to underground mine worker health and to energy efficiency. In order to define the economic advantages of using hydrogen fuel cell vehicles, a detailed study of operating and capital costs associated with underground loaders and power supply infrastructure has been carried out. The results show that for a typical medium-size mine, operating costs and infrastructure costs are less for the fuel cell option versus diesel. The reverse occurs for capital costs owing to the currently higher cost of fuels cells versus diesel engines. This disparity is expected to decrease given the decline in price associated with fuel cell technology advances. Related market issues for fuel cell manufacturers are also presented. Despite the difference in cost, the resources and mine infrastructure required to operate loaders, and base design of the mine loader, is similar for diesel and fuel call versions.

We present research on cable fault location methods for mines where coal dust and methane explosions are a frequent potential hazard. The methodology and devices for low- and medium voltage cables fault location are well known and applied in classical power distribution networks. They are based on solutions for underground mines with a high risk of explosion. The lack of a safe solution for the location of a fault has contributed to the initiation of a research project by a group of Polish companies. The consortium consists of research institutes (Institute of Innovative Technologies EMAG, Tele and Radio Research Institute, Central Mining Institute GIG-KD ?Barbara?), Silesian University of Technology and a private entrepreneur MARTECH PLUS. Fast and exact determination of fault location is one of the important factors for minimizing power outage time. The lack of technical solutions to obtain measurements in a secure way leads to the use of the methods connected with a high risk of explosion. For example, the application of high energy can lead to arc discharge where there is a fault in insulation, creating the risk of an explosion. Measurements of methane concentration along the analyzed section of the cable reduce the risk; however the shock wave generated by the electric arc may raise coal dust and make an explosive mixture, which is an object of ignition. Low energy methods, like those based on reflection waves, have low sensitivity for high- and medium-resistance faults. This technique has difficulties in joints, which create false echoes. The fundamental problem is to determine the topology of the network using a reflectogram and find anomalies of a different nature ? not only open and short circuit. Included in the scope of the project is an analysis of Polish legal regulations related to fault location and operational work for low- and medium-voltage networks. Two of the methods used on the surface were selected as feasible to implement under explosion hazard conditions. In the process of development of the fault location methodology, installation features characteristic of underground mines were used, namely access to the whole length of a cable. This is the attribute that provides an opportunity to do measurements that are usually not possible for typical surface power nets. To carry out laboratory tests, a dedicated measuring stand with various types of cables was built. The authors describe the principle of operation of the fault locator and the results of the laboratory tests carried out on the cables with built-in damage (prepared for tests). Results of the work will be the basis for the next stage of the project associated with operational analyses of the prototype.

"Increased efforts to improve mine safety have led to various successful forms of ground control in Canadian underground mines. At Inca Limited's T-3 Mine in Thompson, Manitoba, a perimeter blasting method has been implemented in jumbo drilled development headings.The technique utilizes an increased number of perimeter blast holes in the drill pattern while decreasing the linear charge density of explosives in any individual perimeter hole. The decrease in perimeter charge density means less blast damage to the surrounding structure.The benefits realized include increased safety through less loose ground and substantially less scaling time, less overbreak and improved long-term drift stability. This paper highlights the development and implementation of the perimeter blasting program.IntroductionThompson Mine Thompson Mine is a 6000 ton per day underground nickel mine located just outside the city of Thompson, 400 miles north of Winnipeg. The mine is serviced by the T-I shaft and by the T-3 shaft. The shafts are 10 000 ft apart and are connected on several levels with the deepest operating levels at T-1 and T-3 being 4000 ft and 2400 ft respectively.The T-3 Mine presently produces 52% of the total Thompson Mine production and 65070 of the 3000 ft of mine development each month. Current development of the 5 million ton 1, C orebody below 2400 level at T-3 will maintain these production and development ratios.Depending on equipment requirements, development headings at T-3 Mine vary in size. The 1, C ramp, at 17 1/2 ft wide by 10 1/2 ft high, is presently the largest development heading at T-3. Fifty- two per cent of the development footage is done with four Gardner Denver two boom electric /hydraulic jumbos and one Gardner Denver one boom electric /hydraulic jumbo. The remaining 48% is driven with hand-held jack-leg drills."

"Solids concentration (% solids) profiles and the clear liquid/slurry interface level (mudline) were determined from conductivity measurements in thickeners at Falconbridge' s Strathcona mill (Ni concentrate and non-mag thickeners) and Kidd Creek Division (Cu, Zn concentrates and final tails in the concentrator and thickeners in the Zn plant).The conductivity measurement system consisted of a probe 1.5 m in length with 24 electrode cells, a 24-channel relay, a conductivity meter and a computer. A conductivity profile is collected which locates the mud-line by the sharp change in conductivity. The conductivity measurements are readily converted to solids concentration profiles without need for calibration.The results from the conductivity measurements were compared with those from pressure profiles and direct measurements on local samples obtained using a modified Noranda sampler.It is concluded that the conductivity technique is applicable to locate the mud-line and to estimate the solids concentration profiles in thickeners. This on-line information could improve the operational efficiency of industrial thickeners.INTRODUCTIONAn automated, on-line technique for detecting the clear liquid/slurry interface (or mudline) and the variation in solids concentration with depth would enhance thickener operation and control. In some processes such enhanced control offers significant benefits. For example, in hydrometallurgical operations solid/liquid separation is often the process limiting step. Water treatment plants are increasingly expected to operate remotely and reliable sensing is vital.Current attempts to detect the mud-line include reflection of some signal (e.g. sonar), floats (Dahlstrom, 1985) and measurement of pressure (Rosenblum, 1991), and in one case, natural radioactivity of the solids (Johnston and Simic, 1991). A recent commercial development uses reflection from a vertical array of optical transmitters/sensors, which also gives local solids concentration (BTG Inc., 1991)."

The Al-Mg-Sc-Zr alloys have shown exceptional potential as structural materials for transportation applications. These alloys have proved to be good candidates to be processed as thin strips via the Horizontal Single Belt Casting (HSBC) process. The HSBC process is a near-net-shape casting technology, which involves casting molten metal directly into thin strips, close to the final product thickness, at high cooling rates. It offers an efficient, economical and environmentally-friendly approach to the production of metal strips. Fluid mechanics and associated heat transfer are important aspects of any casting process, and the novel HSBC process is no exception. Three dimensional Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) simulations using ANSYS FLUENT 14.5 were performed, in order to assess the importance and effects of the various operational conditions of the HSBC process. This enabled process parameter optimization. Numerical predictions were validated against experimental casting results.

"In this paper, the electrochemical behavior of ferric and ferrous couple on the pyrite surface was studied by application of the chronoamperometry technique in an acidic solution at room temperatures and atmospheric pressure. The effects of the pyrite origin, ferric and ferrous ions concentration on the electron transfer kinetics of Fe3+/Fe2+ reaction were probed. Tafel behavior of all the test conditions were developed. The results showed that the ferric-ferrous reaction on pyrite electrodes with different origins have a common mechanism, despite different reaction kinetics. The exchange current densities of the redox reaction have the same magnitude of about 10-5 A·cm-2, which is far lower than the value reported for the gold and platinum electrodes, but larger than that of the chalcopyrite electrode. The cathodic transfer coefficients are between 0.4 and 0.5, while the anodic transfer coefficients appear unusual with the lowest value being 0.23. It was also demonstrated that an increase of one order of magnitude of iron concentration has no clear effect on the exchange current density and cathodic transfer coefficients of Fe3+/Fe2+ redox reaction.INTRODUCTIONPyrite, FeS2, is mostly considered as a gangue mineral which frequently coexists with valuable minerals and metals, such as gold, copper and nickel. Its separation from valuable minerals can be a costly process (Chandra & Gerson, 2010). In refractory gold ores, the fine gold particles are locked inside the pyrite structure. Oxidative leaching of pyrite is a hydrometallurgical method to destroy the structure of pyrite and expose the fine gold particles to the cyanide solution in the downstream cyanidation circuit. Pyrite oxidative leaching can be achieved by oxidation of pyrite via oxygen and ferric ion(McKibben & Barnes, 1986). In fact, pyrite oxidation by oxygen and ferric is a significant source of acid mine drainage(AMD), which adversely causes serious environmental problems(V. P. Evangelou, 1995).The pyrite oxidation mechanism is accomplished in three consecutive steps: (i) pyrite is oxidized by oxygen and ferrous ion formation (Eq. 1); (ii) ferrous oxidation by oxygen and ferric ion formation (Eq. 2); (iii) pyrite oxidation by means of ferric ions (Eq. 3). "Commercial coal mining has been recorded in Nova Scotia since 1863 and during this period an estimated 60,000,000 short tons of mine discard containing 10 1030% coal has been accumulated, Approximately 70% of these dumps are in the Cape Breton region and most are owned by the Cape Breton Development Corporation (CBDC), formerly DEVCO.The explosion of oil produced energy costs which created an increase in thermal coal demand as well as the desire to rehabilitate abandoned mine dumps encouraged coal reclamation. CBDC was receptive to a proposal from the Selminco Joint Venture and encouraged the building of the Princess Recovery Plant (1980) and The Summit Plant (1982).The mine dump contains scrap, waste rocks, coal and substantial quantities of fine shale. The scrap and oversize are removed and the remaining material slurried with water to a density of 1.45. The slurry is cycloned to separate the saleable thermal coal from the rejects which are returned to designated areas of the dump for contouring and revegetation.BackgroundThe recorded coal production in Nova Scotia from 1863 to 1980 was 390,000,000 short tons. This extraction was associated with an estimated 60,000,000 short tons of discarded material. This mining discard and coal washing plant reject are located in numerous, varying sized dumps throughout the mining areas. Approximately 70% of these dumps are in the Sydney coal field region of Nova Scotia. The coal content of these dumps varies from 10 to 30% coal with an average of 18%.Energy CostsThe explosion o f energy costs in the mid-1970s greatly increased the sale price of thermal coal which made recovery of coal from some of the dumps economical. The environmental benefit of these operations will be the rehabilitation of the dumps upon cessation of the coal reclamation operation."

Considerable progress has been made in studying the mechanism and effectiveness of using ultrasound waves to manipulate alloy solidification microstructure, However, uncertainties remain in both the underlying physics of how microstructure evolve under ultrasonic waves, and the best technological approach to control the final microstructure and properties. We used the ultrafast synchrotron X-ray phase contrast imaging facility housed at the Advanced Photon Source, Argonne National Laboratory, USA to study in-situ the highly transient and dynamic interactions between the liquid metal and ultrasonic waves/bubbles. The dynamics of ultrasonic bubbles in liquid metal and their interactions with the solidifying phases were captured in-situ for the first time. The experiments were complemented by the simulations of the acoustic pressure field, the pulsing of the bubbles and the associated forces acting onto the solidifying phases, providing more quantitative understanding for using ultrasound to control the growth of dendritic grains and to enhance grain multiplication effects for grain refinement.

"La Compagnie Minière Québec Cartier at Port Cartier. Quebec, utilizes six parallel wet grinding open circuit ball mills to grind iron ore concentrate for the pellet making process. In an attempt to improve grinding efficiency, a mix of 605 25 mm (1 in.) and 405 38 mm (1 ½ in.) grinding balls was charged to mill D while the opposite mix was used in all the other mills. Because media costs were higher for mill D, it was necessary to find out if the smaller balls provided a net economic benefit. Therefore, a test program was undertaken to determine the relative efficiency of the charge in mill D compared to the other grinding mills. Mill F was chosen for comparative efficiency measurements.The first problem was to choose a suitable definition of grinding efficiency. In management's view, previous attempts to quantify milling performance using population balance modelling were ineffective because they were unable to relate breakage rate functions to grinding circuit economical in any meaningful way. Work index analysis was also not favoured because of a number of complicating effects, including the fineness of the feed and product streams and open circuit grinding.It was decided to adopt a recent innovative approach which had been successfully applied to closed-circuit ball milling. For ""functional performance analysis of ball milling"" (McIvor et al., 1990; McIvor et al., 1991), a size criterion is first chosen to define ""fines·' and ~'coarse particles"". In this case 45 microns (325 mesh) was chosen to distinguish fines from coarse material. The relative grinding efficiency of each ball mill environment would then be ~e cumulative grinding (disappearance) rate of coarse (plus 45 nucrons) material per kilowatt hour of energy applied to the coarse material in the mill, divided by the grindability (measured in the laboratory) of the coarse material in the mill feed.Because the disappearance rate of coarse particles is also the production rate of fines, the following equation can be written for the efficiency of the mill environment, Effe, as defined above:"

Due to the detrimental effect of platelet iron-rich intermetallics on mechanical properties (particularly ductility) in cast alloys, it has been essential to transform these phases into Chinese script morphology. In the present work, the effects of Mn and/or Si addition and cooling rate on the phase transformation of the iron-rich intermetallics in 206 cast alloys with different Fe contents ranging from 0.15 % to 0.5 % were systematically investigated. The results obtained showed that platelet ß-Fe and Al3(FeMn), Chinese script a-Fe, Alm(FeMn) and Al6(FeMn) can be observed in the 206 cast alloys, depending on the Fe, Mn and Si contents as well as the cooling rate. It was found that the addition of either Mn or Si favors the formation of Chinese script iron-rich intermetallics but inhibits the precipitation of the platelet phases. In addition, the combined addition of both Mn and Si has a synergistic effect on the phase transformation. Furthermore, there exists a critical cooling rate to effectively suppress the formation of platelet iron-rich intermetallics for a given alloy. The threshold cooling rate decreases with increasing Fe, Mn and Si contents. Casting process maps are established to correlate the intermetallics precipitated with alloy chemistry and cooling rate for 206 cast alloys containing various Fe levels.

"Coal is rapidly becoming a major alternative to oil. According to the World Coal Study Final Report, total world coal trade could approach one billion tons annually by the year 2000. To facilitate the increased production and export market potential of the coal producing countries, advancements must be made to improve the transportation systems. Coal slurry pipeline systems could play a significant role in achieving these market forecasts.There are three major components to a coal slurry system the preparation plant, the pipeline and the dewatering plant. The experience and expertise gained from the Consolidation Coal Company system in Ohio, the Black Mesa system in Arizona and ETSI's Coal Evaluation Plant demonstrate that slurry pipeline technology is proven and available to meet the coal transport challenge.The costs of transporting coal by slurry pipeline can offer significant savings, as about 70 per cent of its costs are fixed. The reverse is true for railroads, where 75 to 80 per cent of the costs vary with inflation. All forms of transport-rail, barge and pipeline-will be required to move the massive volumes of coal. Coal slurry systems can provide a viable transport alternative.IntroductionThe importance of coal as a major alternative to oil is now well known and accepted throughout the world. Increasing oil prices over the last eight years have had a serious effect on national economics, particularly in those countries that are heavily dependent on oil. Coal can replace oil as the principal fuel source which could support world economic growth over the next two decades. This is the main conclusion of the World Coal Study (WOCOL) Final Report, published in May 1980.The product of that report was a result of considerable deliberation by key industry leader s and energy experts. The underlying message of the World Coal Study is that our energy and economic problems can be faced with confidence if coal use doubles by the early 1990s and triples by 2000, and if steam coal trade expand s considerably."

The deep-hole surface blasting technique is a prime method of iron ore mining. Blasting fragmentation is one of the important economic indicators that measures the blast method to obtain the iron ore. To improve the efficiency of the blasting method and further reduce the cost of the subsequent processing of iron ore, this paper summarizes measured data gained from a certain amount of blasting test conducted in an iron ore mine in Guangdong province, China. According to the data analysis, there are differences on iron ore blasting fragmentation by different indicators of deep-hole blasting, such as decoupling coefficient of charge, contact state between charge and borehole wall, and change of detonation position in charge. These factors were compared in terms of relevance and impact. Research shows: under certain rock conditions, the decoupling coefficient of the charge has a best range related to blasting fragmentation. Since the detonation position in charge determines the direction of propagation of the explosion stress wave through ore and rock, bottom initiation and mid initiation will help to improve the iron ore blasting fragmentation in joints fractured rock and ore. The research conclusions have important application value for program design of iron ore surface blasting and to guide other types of rock surface blasting.

The extraction and concentration of nickel from aqueous solutions by emulsion liquid membranes (ELMs) using tributylphosphate (TBP) as extractant has been investigated in this research. The emulsion liquid membrane consists of a diluent (kerosene), a surfactant (Span 80), a mobile carrier (TBP), and a stripping solution (ammonia solutions). Important factors influencing the separation process including membrane composition, feed composition, and mixing speed have been examined. The results show that more than 90% of nickel in the feed solution could be extracted by ELMs under the experimental conditions, indicating the feasibility to use the designated ELMs to detoxify nickel-containing industrial waste solutions.

For example, block cave mining involves development of kilometers of drifts with multiple pillars. ? The cyclic nature of drill and blast, and its inherent tendency to damage the surrounding excavation rock mass and increase support demand often result in poor advance rates ? This has motivated mining companies to replace the conventional drill-and-blast as the main excavation method with alternative methods such as mechanized excavation. ? There is little experience with mechanized or non-explosive excavation methods in hard rock metalliferous underground mining.

Increasingly sophisticated rock mechanic tools are becoming more and more available for today?s ground control specialist. However many problems are still beyond our ability to explicitly calculate or measure. There is often a gap between the ?art? and the ?science? of rock mechanics. This paper focuses more on the ?art?, giving relatively simple examples of underground observations and micro-seismic records to help explain ground control issues. Ground support techniques such as in cycle shotcrete with high pressure water scaling, mesh and bolting, pumpable resin bolts/cablebolting, and yielding bolts with load spreading straps are discussed. The use of primary/secondary type blasthole sequences in moderate to high stress situations is also discussed with several examples of the micro-seismic response to the stoping. Relatively erratic geology with high material strength contrasts is currently being mined with blasthole methods at Nickel Rim South. Although the mine is still in its? ?early? days, over 1 million tonnes has been extracted and some empirical experience is highlighted with potential longer term issues also being discussed.

In this section we will discuss the various techniques utilised worldwide to effect feed preparation.Primary ProcessingWhere the diamonds are recovered into a high grade concentrate suitable for the more expensive and selective final recovery process. In this section we will discuss the development of primary processing from jigs and pans to the more current techniques utilised worldwide.Final RecoveryWhere there is selective rejection of waste particles until only diamonds remain. The diamonds may then be acidised prior to packing and marketing.Within these distinct phases a variety of unit processes have been utilised and this paper will discuss their relative merits, limitations and suitability in respect to the various stages of diamond project development from prospecting through to production.Basic capital and operating costs are compared for the autogenous milling route developed in the CIS and the crushing and scrubbing route utilised in the west."
