"This paper will essentially update the information that is already known and published on the limestones of the Province of Quebec. The excellent report by M. F. Goudge (1935)m is difficult to improve upon and the areas of limestone quarrying are generally the same as they were at the time of Goudge's report. Our knowledge of the limestones of Quebec has been improved considerably in recent years by the publications of T. H. Clark, 2 who, since 1938, has been mapping and reporting on these lime-stones and has discussed their stratigraphy, their structural features, their history and their economic value. One economic aspect is the presence of natural gas in these formations and the possible occurrence of oil. A total of 150 test holes had been drilled to a depth of more than 500 feet by the end of 1967 and, in addition, at least 256 more shallow holes had been put down in the St. Lawrence Lowlands. The information from these test holes has greatly improved our knowledge of the thickness and extent. of the various formations of Paleozoic limestone and shale in Quebec.This paper will then review briefly the limestone occurrences in Quebec, using the old as well as the more recent reports as principal references"

"Recovering pyrite from the gangue with high sulfur content is of great significance for both economic development and environment protection in China. Due to the global water shortage and high cost in wet separation processes, it is urgent to explore more efficient energy and water conservation method in mineral processing field. This study has proposed an innovative method based on density difference for fine pyrite enrichment by vibration fluidized bed. In this study, the total sulfur content (TSC) of the gangue sample is 19.18%, and the pyrite is disseminated with fine granularity in the gangue which should be crushed for dissociation. The combination and dissociation experiment of -6mm gangue shows that the dominant density of -6+3mm, -3+1mm and -1+0.5mm comminuted material is +2.9g/cm3. Based on the analysis of characteristic, the effects of various factors on the separation performance were experimental studied. The results show that gas velocity, vibration intensity and bed height all have the significant effects. With the increases of superficial gas velocity, vibration intensity and bed height, the separation performance all presents a decreasing tendency. Additionally, the TSC of -6+3mm, -3+1mm and -1+0.5mm materials are respectively up to 37.94% , 35.43% and 30.61% at the optimum conditions, which are the 1.72?1.90 and 2.29 times as much as the TSC of raw material, respectively. This study demonstrates the vibrated fluidized bed can recovery pyrite from the gangue effectively.INTRODUCTIONWith the increasing mining and separation of coal, the yield of gangue has a further growth tendency, which has become one of the largest reserves of industrial waste (Querol et al., 2008). However, many harmful elements, such as S?NOx and Hg, is existed in the gangue leading the serious damage to the soil and environment (Hao, Yun, Zhanyuan, Sen, & Song, 2013). In addition, the economic would be suffered from the loss resulting in the occupied of arable land caused by the accumulation of gangue (Yeheyis, Shang, & Yanful, 2009; Zhou, Liu, Yan, Fang, & Wang, 2012). Therefore, the government has put forward the policies of ""green mining"" in China (Xing & Gao, 2009; R. Zhang, Ai, Zhou, Ju, & Zhang, 2015; Zheng, Du, Li, Qiu, & Yang, 2015). Among different research areas of coal utilization, extracting the useful minerals has become one of hot topics (Ledin & Pedersen, 1996; P. Patra & Natarajan, 2003; Partha Patra & Natarajan, 2004). At present, many researchers has devoted to the desulfurization of coal all over the world. As result, the sulfur element, which is mainly existed in the presence of pyrite, would transferred in the tailings, namely the gangue. Meanwhile, the pyrite is important raw materials to produce rubber, paper, textile and match. Consequently, recovering the pyrite from the gangue is not only suitable to the requirement of ""green mining"", but it could turn the waste into the treasure having the important significance."

"Cobalt based super alloy stellite 6 was weld cladded on AISI 304 L stainless steel using SMAW process in order to improve the wear resistance for tyre crusher blades. Microstructure characterization and micro hardness testing was performed on stellite 6 cladding. The suitable parameters viz. 80 Amp current with arc weaving technique was selected by performing bead on plate experiment were further used for depositing multipass multilayer cladding to achieve full filler chemistry at the top surface. Further GTAW process was used for re-melting the top surface of the cladding. Comparative evaluation of the claddings showed that TIG re-melting resulted in increased microhardness and wear resistance in comparison to as cladded specimens even with lesser deposition of material. It was observed that TIG re-melting improved the hardness from 603 HV0.5 kg to 712 HV0.5 kg. Micro structures of stellite 6 contained cobalt solid solution matrix along with inter dendrite chromium carbides which resulted in the increased micro hardness values. Pin on disc abrasion tests were carried out at room temperature and the worn out surfaces were characterized using SEM and EDS.INTRODUCTIONThe crusher blades are used in many industries for crushing various types of material and its wider applications in tyre rubber crushing mills, metal-powder crushers industries etc. Most of the crusher blades are damaged by the wear and impact loading conditions. It is because of metal to metal abrasion and the temperature also plays a vital role in blunting the cutting edges of these blades. The wear is the major cause which leads to loss of material and thus the productivity that can never be recovered (Kotechi et al., 1992). The wear can be reduced by coating of various super alloys which could reduce the behavior of metal degradation even in aggressive environments. Cladding of cheaper low alloyed material with expensive superalloys to enhance the performance of components at low cost has been investigated by many scholars (Deng et al., 2010, Kennametal, 2007, Lolla et al., 2014, Singhet al., 2014, J.N et al., 2003, Ramkumar et al., 2012). Many researchers have reported that cladding is an application of build-up deposits of specialized alloys to resist abrasion, high temperature corrosion and impact loadings. Cladding is used for providing required mechanical strength properties as well as inhibition of oxidation and other corrosive degradation. Coatings are used to protect the heat affected areas like tubes of fluidized bed combustor etc. (Kirchbner et al., 2008, Wang et al., 1994, Hocking et al., 1993, Ananthapadmanabhan et al., 1991, Staia et al., 2001). Coating techniques are widely used for the protection of turbine engine and boiler tubes against high temperature corrosion attack, power generation equipment, chemical process equipment, aircraft engines, pulp and paper processing equipment, bridges, rollers and concrete reinforcements, orthopedics and dental, land-based and marine turbines, ships. Coatings of stellite 6 are widely used in steam turbine blades and boiler tubes for power generation because of an excellent combination of impact, wear and other properties. It can maintain its properties even at high temperature and in harsh environments (Kobayashiet al., 1999, Alam et al., 2009, Munehru et al., 2009). The loading and unloading conditions experienced by the material may induce the surface cracks which lead to its breakage and leaving large pits in the surface (Meng et al., 1995). Forecasting productivity of construction operations is a difficult but crucial task in planning construction projects. Over the past decades, many models have been developed to forecast productivity for different construction operations. Models made up of several functional relations and controlled by a specific number of control rules are more in line with human reasoning and logic. Neural-Network-Driven Fuzzy Reasoning (NNDFR) structure as one of these models shows a great performance for modeling datasets among which clear clusters are recognizable. Lack of the compatibility of conventional NNDFR with fuzzy clustering algorithms besides the insufficient attention paid to the optimization of number of clusters in this model, created a potential area for further research. The main contribution of the proposed model is to develop a modified NNDFR system to model construction data. To this end, Fuzzy C-Means (FCM) algorithm is substituted for K-means in NNDFR structure, and its parameters such as the number of clusters and weighting exponent are optimized through genetic algorithm. The proposed model is further verified through simulation of a construction operation in which several qualitative and quantitative factors are considered. Its implementation to the case study shows a considerable improvement of model performance with lower Mean Squared Error (MSE). The developed model assists researchers and practitioners in utilizing historical construction data to forecast productivity of construction operations with a high accuracy that could not be obtained by traditional techniques.

"INTRODUCTIONThe Red Dog Project in Alaska is being developed by Cominco Alaska, a subsidiary of Corninco Ltd. of Canada, and the Nana Regional Corporation, one of the 12 native corporations created by the Alaska Native Claims Settlement Act of1971.The State of Alaska is also a very key part of the project through its financing of the transportation system for Red Dog. Red Dog will be the third, and largest, of Cominco's Arctic mining developments in the past thirteen years, after the Black Angel Mine in Greenland, which started up in 1973, and the Polaris Mine in the Canadian Arctic, which began production six years ago in 1982.Red Dog is one of the world's great mineral deposits, with a unique combination of large size, high-grade, and a waste-to- ore ratio less than I: I, which will make it the world's largest, and one of the lowest cost zinc producers, when at full production. The present mineral reserve is estimated to be 85 million tons , at a grade of 17.1010 zinc, 5% lead, and 2.4 ounces per ton of silver. Based on the current production forecast, this will give a mine life of almost 50 years, and the deposit is still open in two directions, although the structure is becoming thinner at depth. As well, there is a satellite zone about one mile south of the main deposit which could contain up to another 8 million tons of mineral at Red Dog grades or better. This is not presently included in the reserve due to potential processing difficulties.In relation to other zinc deposits, Red Dog is the second largest ever discovered, smaller than the original Broken Hill deposit in Australia, but larger than Cominco's own Sullivan Mine in British Columbia, which is number three. It is quite possible that, when the area is adequately explored, Red Dog will be number one."

"The Arthur W. White Mine (formerly Dickenson Mine) is a structurally controlled, hydrothermal gold deposit. A gold producer since 1948, it has, to December 31, 1990, processed 6.9 million (m) tons (T) of ore grading 0.45 ounces per ton gold (oz/T Au). As of December 31, 1991, Proven and Probable Ore Reserves were 3.2 m. T. at 0.32 oz/T Au. The mine is located just east ofPlacer Dome Inc. 's Campbell Mine, within the Cochenour-Gull.rock Lake deformation zone. It is situated on the hanging-wall side of a southeast-plunging anticline in a sequence of metamorphosed Archean volcanic, sedimentary and plutonic rocks of the Red Lake greenstone belt. Ore-bearing structures, found mainly within basaltic rocks, are brittle within greenschist-facies rocks to the northwest, but become more ductile toward the southeast, in amphibolite-facies rocks. Within and proximal to these structures, carbonate and arsenopyrite alteration decreases, whereas biotite, actinolite, pyrite and pyrrh otite all increase to the southeast.Ore and shear structures occur symmetrically about the northwest-trending, steeply southwest-dipping, flattening foliation . The three most common ore trends are on average: (A) northwest trending with a 55 degree to 85 degree dip to the southwest; (B) north-trending with a 40 degree to 50 degree dip to the west; and (C) due east-west-trending with a vertical dip. In general, the dominant direction of economic gold concentrations are explained and thus predicted by considering deformation style (brittle or ductile), rock anisotropies such as bedding and lithological contacts, and direction/magnitude of relative block movement. Direction ""A"" can be found adjacent to both right- and left-handed faults. Direction ""B "" occurs with dominantly right-handed systems and direction ""C"" is found with predominantly left-handed movement. Major faults active prior to, during, and after ore formation can have offsets in the order of 2500 feet. Movements along these faults were transpressive while their conjugate breaks were dilatant, thus creating zones for alteration and ore solution emplacement. A series of faults , each with offsets up to 30 feet were established under lower temperature brittle conditions during late- to post-ore formation. In more complex zones, formed during more ductile deformation, these faults controlled the localized geometry and, thereby, the depletion and enrichment of ore shoots, causing a high nugget effect.Although an important aspect of production planning and monitoring, grade control is also very important within a complex ore zone so that the nuggets are not missed. Detailed observation of structure at the hand-sample scale and detailed mapping at the stope scale give valuable clues to interpreting the structures on a mine-wide scale. Determining the relative movement along fault structures is very important so that using an action-reaction- type logic, potential dilatant areas can be predicted and targeted for development and diamond drilling."

In 2003, Phelps Dodge Mining Company decided to pursue the design and construction of a Central Analytical Laboratory to provide chemical analyses for their Arizona and New Mexico operations. This centralized approach was selected in place of refurbishing six (6) older laboratories that operated at the various Phelps Dodge sites, and which would not have permitted full automation and use of robotics. The new lab was designed by the Process Technology Center (PTC) Material Characterization Group in cooperation with IMP Group. The Central Analytical Service Center (CASC) encompasses fully automated sample preparation of blast holes and geological samples weighing up to 15 kg/sample. The CASC also includes the first "wet chemistry module" worldwide to be operated by robotics systems to perform Total Cu, Acid Soluble Cu, and Quick Leach Tests (QLT), and a fully automated lab for electrowon copper cathode. The new lab also offers flexibility for handling specialty samples and analyses by either semi-automated or manual mode. Data handling and transfer is accomplished using the commercially available StarLIMS system. Commissioning was accomplished within five (5) months of startup during which the CASC also handled 86% of a full production load. The 24/7 lab operation has already exceeded its design capacity, has achieved considerable savings in operating cost, reduced sample preparation errors, and significantly increased analytical quality.

Fatalities resulting from ground workers colliding with objects and construction equipment accounted for approximately 18% of the total construction fatalities experienced in 2010. Current injury and fatality measuring methods have proven to be inadequate due to their use of passive measures of safety rather than a more active approach, such as the use of leading indicator data (also called near misses) of hazardous proximity situations between ground workers and heavy equipment on construction sites. The objectives are to create and evaluate the effectiveness of a reliable algorithm for collecting and analyzing the resulting leading indicator data from hazardous proximity situations. Numerous experiments emulating typical interactions between workers-on-foot and heavy equipment are used to evaluate the proximity sensing and detection technology. Safety leading indicator data (also called near misses) generated by the proximity sensing and detection technology during the experimental trials are used to create and assess the resulting algorithm. Results from the experiments indicate that leading indicator data generated from these systems can be processed and analyzed to identify hazardous proximity situations and incidents on construction sites.

"Froth stability has an overriding effect on metallurgical recovery and grade for many ore types. Froth recoveries of less than 10% are common for low stability froths such as those in sparsely mineralized ores or in cells at the back end of flotation circuits. It is well known that, aside from chemical factors such as frothers and electrolytes, the mineral particles themselves have the dominant influence on froth stability. The particle properties of size and hydrophobicity are expected to have the greatest effects on froth stability. The aim of this study was to understand the effects of particle size on froth stability and to quantify these relationships.The study compared a synthetic ore of pyrite and quartz, with carefully controlled size ranges and hydrophobicity, with conventionally milled platinum-bearing UG2 ore and the bulk reverse flotation of hematite ore. A novel bench-scale continuous column flotation cell and continuous mechanical hybrid cell with large relative froth volumes, as well as a three-phase froth stability column were used to characterize the froths.It was found that froth stability could be related to the concentrate particle surface area by a Langmuir-type relationship. This is indicative that the mechanism by which particles stabilize the thin films in froths is similar to the mechanism by which surfactants lower surface tension. Different froth stabilities were found for different ores and this was thought to be the result of different particle sizes and distributions, which resulted in different packing densities in the thin films and Plateau borders. Interestingly, there was a clear relationship between the feed particle size and the froth stability even though froth stability was dependent on the concentrate particle surface area. It seems that the feed particle size is a good predictor of the surface area of particles in the concentrate. Concentrate particle size did not show a clear relationship with froth stability since it was already shown that it is both the size and the amount of the particles in the froth that contribute to the stability.INTRODUCTIONThe stability of the froth in froth flotation is important to the recovery and grade of the valuable mineral. Too stable a froth and the grade is reduced; not stable enough and the recovery may be compromised. Platinum-bearing ores with fragile, poorly mineralised froths are known to have froth recoveries that are routinely less than 10% (Crosbie et al, 2009). There are a number of chemical, physical and operating parameters that can affect froth stability, including reagent dosages, air flow rate, pulp density and particle properties. Arguably, the largest contribution to froth stability is from the particles that stabilise (or destabilise) the thin films in froths. Particle size, hydrophobicity and shape all affect froth stability to some extent."

"In this study, the Fe(II)/Fe(III) redox reaction kinetics on the surface of pyrite, have been investigated in a 0.5 mol L-1 sulfuric acid solution for a temperature range of 22 to 65°C. Based on mixed potential theory, chronoamperometry is introduced to study the Fe(II)/Fe(III) kinetics by subtracting the current density of pyrite oxidation in an iron-free acidic solution from that in an iron-containing solution at the same applied polarized potential. Tafel behavior was established by this method to analyze the kinetics of the Fe(II)/Fe(III) redox reactions. The results showed that exchange current densities increased slightly with temperature, however remained on the order of 10-5 A cm-2. The activation energy for Fe(II) oxidation and Fe(III) reduction on the pyrite surfaces was calculated to be 102.0 and 32.7 kJ mol-1, respectively. Anodic transfer coefficients also increased, from 0.24 to 0.39, with increasing temperature, which indicates a weakened n-type semiconductor property at higher temperatures. Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy measurements have indicated that at lower anodic over potentials the charge transfer is the rate determining step of pyrite oxidative dissolution in sulfuric acid solution. In the presence of Fe ions, the major contribution of the total current density comes from the Fe(II)/Fe(III) redox reaction. INTRODUCTION Pyrite, an abundant sulfides mineral in the nature, is commonly considered a valueless gangue mineral frequently associated with other valuable sulfide minerals such as chalcopyrite, or metals such as gold, or coal (Lin & Say, 1999). Pyrite oxidation has been the subject of extensive research in view of gold metallurgy, as oxidation of pyrite is the initial step to break down the pyrite lattice and expose the encapsulated fine gold particles (Gasparrini, 1983). Fe(III) ion and dissolved oxygen (DO) have generally been considered as the two most important oxidants with respect to pyrite oxidation, having been studied extensively in previous research (Zheng, Allen, & Bautista, 1986; King Jr & Lewis, 1980). The process of pyrite oxidation can be viewed as a series of reactions amongst pyrite, ferrous, ferric and oxygen in which pyrite is initially oxidized by the dissolved oxygen in water forming ferrous (Eq. 1), and then the ferrous also is oxidized by he dissolved oxygen to form ferric (Eq. 2). The ferric, produced by reaction 2, then could potentially oxidize pyrite (Eq. 3) and convert to ferrous."

The adsorption of gold complexes on inorganic metal oxides has been mainly discussed in geochemical literature, but it is also of interest to the hydrometallurgical industry. This is so because it could be responsible for valuable metal losses or because it could potentially serve as alternative adsorbent material to activated carbon in certain cases such as from hot and acidic process slurries. This paper constitutes an early investigation into this subject by focusing on the effectiveness of FeOOH, Fe3O4 and Al2O3 as sorbent materials. All tests were done in a batch stirred-tank reactor under atmospheric conditions with synthetic gold(III)-chloride solutions at 23°C and 80°C, in the pH range of 1.6 to 9.0. Detailed kinetic tests were performed at different pH values (3 and 6) on FeOOH and Fe3O4 with solutions having gold concentrations from 5 mg/L to 130 mg/L. The adsorption of gold was found to be best both in terms of kinetics and loading characteristics at 80°C and pH=6. This was explained by a change in Au(III)-Cl speciation from a gold(III)-chloride complex to a gold(III)-chloride-hydroxy complex. By far, magnetite (reagent grade chemical) yielded the best gold adsorption characteristics making it an interesting sorbent material for further development considering that it can be advantageously recovered from slurry streams via magnetic separation. On the other hand, the tendency of gold(III)-chloro complexes to adsorb on metal (hydro) oxides needs to be taken into account to minimize undesirable metal losses in chloride-containing leaching media.

"The flotation of fine minerals less than 10 µm in size is an age old challenge spanning both the precious metal and industrial mineral sectors across a range of commodities. This problem has been brought into sharper focus by the emergence of the practice of fine grinding of flotation feed to effect better liberation of the targeted minerals. However, the ability of conventional flotation cells to effectively float the liberated fines remains questionable. In order to overcome this problem, Gold Ore postulates the “Bringing the Mountain to Mohamed” hypothesis which comprises the steps of gas nucleation on particle surfaces, aggregation of particles and levitation of aggregates. Testing of this hypothesis at Mintek, South Africa, showed a ~180% increase in the Kelsall kfast factor coupled with a projected recovery improvement of ~4 % for the Mach Reactor case coupled with a final concentrate grade of ~2 times that of conventional flotation. These fundamentals were then extrapolated to plant scale with Mach Reactors installed on the flotation feed at Platmin’s Tailings Scavenger Plant (TSP) with the objective of scavenging the fine minerals lost to tailings by the main plant. This paper details the theory, pilot plant results as well as key aspects of the full scale plant design supplemented by operational plant observations after commissioning. This game changing application is regarded as being pivotal to future flotation plant design whilst providing the technology leverage required for the survival of mineral operations in an economically unfriendly environment.INTRODUCTION - THE CONUNDRUM OF FINE PARTICLE FLOTATION“If the mountain won't come to Mohamed then Mohamed must go to the mountain” is an age old saying written into the book of proverbs in 1670. Aluminum alloys are increasingly used for automotive body construction but are susceptible to filiform corrosion or paint blistering in service. Filiform corrosion resistance of two 6000-series aluminum alloys was investigated in this work. Test panels were produced with full automotive coating layers and scribed parallel and perpendicular to the rolling direction. The corrosion exposure comprised an inoculation step with acidified salt solution followed by a 6-week exposure period at 95% relative humidity and either 25°C or 70°C. Greatest corrosion activity was measured on the alloy with higher copper content, AA6111. Higher temperature exposure led to greatly enhanced corrosion activity for AA6111 compared to the lower temperature exposure. The 70°C exposure also led to greater mean corrosion-affected area measurements for the low copper aluminum alloy, AA6022, but the effect was not as stark as that observed for AA6111. Rolling direction affected the propagation direction, and possibly mechanism, of the corrosion effects. Cross-sectional analysis revealed dense corrosion products within the filament, comprising mostly aluminum and oxygen but with traces of chloride and sulphate. Development of varying filament and blister types on a single test panel and the progression of corrosion underneath a filament into the substrate indicate that several corrosion mechanisms can develop on the test panel, testament to the complexity of the corroding surface developed on an aluminum automotive body panel.

The Molopo Farms Complex is a major, layered ultramafic/mafic, early Proterowic intrusion which is totally covered by sediments of the Karoo and Kalahari Fonnations and situated in southern Botswana and northeastern South Africa. The approximately 3000 m thick, generally fine- to medium-grained ultramafic and mafic cumulates are intrusive into equivalents of Thmsvaal Supergroup sediments and lavas. Multiphase defonnation resulted in tilting and segmentation of the Complex into individual tectonic blocks. Sr isotopes document at least two chemically distinct parental liquids which interacted in a complex manner to form an approximately 1000 m thick rhythmically layered succession which straddles the ultramafic/mafic boundary. Repeated mixing resulted in a complex cryptic layering pattern and numerous sulfide-enriched layers which contain significant PGE+Au concentrations.

This paper, in the form of a progress report, deals with new methods, processes and materials used by Canadian steel foundries for regular production, as well as with developments still in the initial but promising stages. T HE casting of steel to shape is the most direct method of producing steel parts in their final form. It is a basically economical process both as to cost and production time; it is also a process that offers design engineers the greatest flexibility and highest metallurgical versatility. "Surface crown pillars are important Canadian,mining structures. Mines operating in the Canadian Shield usually have several, forming a first line of protection from surface elements.Detailed technical information from twenty-four Canadian hard rock mines show that the deposits dip steeply and are generally either single or multiple veins. Considerable overburden usually cap the deposits. The rock mass is often altered and intersected by important discontinuities.The designs for these types of pillars lack basic data and are based on experience rather than a scientific approach. Regardless of the competence of the rock mass, the surface crown-pillar thickness to width ratios (an unscientific design tool used by the industry) are usually less than five. Rock bolting is, in almost every case, used as a support measure. However, there are many openings neither backfilled nor monitored.The characteristics of openings with surface crown pillars are also examined."
