The correct application of large crater blasts in unfrozen tar sand is an effective means of resisting frost penetration during winter. This results in much higher productivity and considerably less down time with excavators during winter operations. The resulting flatter angle of repose of the highwall has readily been accommodated with slight modification to bucket-wheel excavator operating procedure. Other mining schemes call for large draglines to be located on top of the highwall, which can be as high as J80 feet. The question now arises as to the effect that blasting might have on the stability of such a situation in which the highwall includes potential planes of weakness. This paper applies blast vibration data from large-scale blasting in tar sand to the stability analysis for typical production situations likely to be encountered and indicates safe scaled distances to be employed between dragline and blast.

"Responding to requests by the Canadian mining industry and the mine regulatory authorities, the Canada Centre for Mineral and Energy Technology (CANMET) undertook a major research project on evaluation of wire rope testing in 1986. The objectives were to document, analyze, and clarify - in basic operational terms the reasons for ongoing mine shaft wire rope failures that occur despite mandatory non-destructive testing (NDT) with electromagnetic (EM) instruments on a routine basis.The project's investigative scope and depth was unprecedented. It could not have been successfully completed without the wholehearted cooperation of industry, research organizations, and mine-inspectorates at both national and international levels.The project's goals were attained. II was shown that, at present, the problem areas in Canada are oj a human , rather than of a hardware-related nature. Consequently, the principal recommendations are concerned with a more widespread, more uniform and thorough operator training and certification process at industrial and regulatory levels. Secondary suggestions concern areas of hardware-related improvements.In this paper an up-to-date general overview is given of the major project results. A n extensive reference list is also provided of papers that contain all relevant documentation in detail."

It is shown that considerable benefits accrue from the use of an appropriate design in which a number of factors (process parameters) are varied simultaneously while the system response such as percent recovery, degree of separation, purity, etc. is monitored and ultimately optimized.Compared with the commonly encountered one-factor-at-a time approach, this schema exploits reduced experimentation (thereby requiring reduced resources [staff, time, dollars, etc.]) yet yields quantitative information on the significance of each factor and their combinations on the measured response."

"The main object of ore reserve classification is to assess the reliability of an ore reserve estimate. Because traditional classification schemes fail to provide a means of calculating this reliability, the terms 'proven "" 'probable' and 'possible ' ore were introduced as an attempt to qualify it.Geostatistics, on its part, allows the quantification of the precision of any ore estimate and thus appears as an appropriate tool for ore reserve classification.However, the problem of fixing quantitative boundaries for ore classes remains. In order to be meaningful, ore class limits based on the degree of reliability should be customized to the commodity, and the type and size of the deposit. In addition, the precision of an ore estimate will be affected by the cut-off grade and the size of selective mining units.IntroductionPrimarily, ore reserve classification should be seen as a communication tool between the geologist and the mining engineer on one hand and the management and policy maker on the other. By classifying ore reserves, the geologist tries to answer the very fundamental question: ""What quantity of metal is there in the ground and how sure am I that it really exists?""The difficult y of quantifying the degree of reliability of reserves has led to the creation of a large suite of terms and definitions, with almost every mining company having its own set of definition standards. As lower-grade deposits are brought into production, the margin of tolerable error in estimates of the grade and tonnage is becoming much narrower. Consequently, the need for unequivocal definition of the reliability of ore reserves is increasingly acute. Most of the generally accepted systems of classification, however, describe the reliability of reserves in qualitative, rather than quantitative, terms."

"INTRODUCTIONInco Ltd. has ten operating mines in the Sudbury district. Over the last ten years mining methods have changed at Inco with special emphasis on the introduction of bulk mining replacing conventional mechanized cut-and-f ill and undercut-and-fill methods. At the same time, the technology and size of LH D equipment has also progressed to meet the demands of bulk mining. This paper will concentrate on various aspects of the introduction and operation of electric LHD equipment a t Inco Limited, Ontario Division. BackgroundInco Limited received its first electric 2 cu. yd capacity LHD in July 1975 at Creighton Mine. The unit was tested pulling shrinkage stope muck and then was moved to a mechanized cut and- fill complex on 6600 Level. The electric scooptram received quick acceptance from the operators, due to its quiet operation and low heat generation, in a relatively hot operating environment. Although there are only two of these units operating a t present, this initial favourable experience, both in cost and efficiency, led to the development and purchase of electric scooptrams of the 5 cu. yd size. There are currently eleven 5 cu . yd electric LHDs in operation.The most recent development a t Inco is the move to yet larger electric LHDs in the 8 cu. yd size. The first electric ""Eight"" has now been in operation at Copper Cliff South Mine for over a year. This unit has the distinction of being the first one of its kind in service in North America. At the time of writing, there were ten 8 cu. yd electric ma chines operating in Inco's Ontario Division Mines, with three on order."

"Review of prototype testing of two types of three-phase, argon stabilized reactor/furnace indicates specialized advantages for both, as compared with existing metallurgical furnace technology. They are: the direct-arc, plasma-torch furnace (Knipp); and the indirect, plasma extended-arc reactor (PEAR), developed at the University of Toronto.IntroductionA unique type of three-phase AC, plasma extended-arc reactor, (PEAR), shown in Figure la with gravity feed, has been undergoing development at the University of Toronto, during the past fifteen years: argon gas, introduced axially through drilled-holes in ordinary graphite electrodes, increases the length of indirect arcing and improves electrical stability while decreasing electrode consumption as compared with the performance of AC electric arc furnaces (EAF 's). Meanwhile and independently, a three-phase, transferred arc plasma furnace (Fig. 1b) has been developed by the Krupp Research Institute in Germany, using argon-stabilized, water- cooled plasma-torches with thoriated tungsten electrodes.Accordingly, the two types of furnace are similar as to both three phase and stabilized operation, but otherwise they differ in several respects, ranging from indirect versus direct-arcing to principal intended application and current state of practical development. Between them they raise questions: (I) of their present or fore seeable economics in comparison with existing processes they are intended to replace , (see Heinke and Neuschutz, 1986, for a review of the merit s of AC and DC plasma-torch furnaces); and (2) of the state of development and accessibility of their plasma theory-in-common."

"The increase in the price of gold in the last decade has led to a significant increase in placer gold exploration around the world. Placer deposits occur in depressions along ancient river and stream channels. In many instances these channels have been covered with materials from subsequent erosion or glacial activity. Use of high resolution geophysical techniques to map the bedrock and soil strata can improve the probability of finding the placer deposits. The buried bedrock surface is often the factor controlling deposition. Ground probing radar (GPR) and seismic sounding are complementary high resolution techniques which can be used to map bedrock topography and soil stratigraphy. Current radar instrumentation operates best in coarse grained soils. Penetration depths of up to 30 m have been attained, and stratigraphic horizons have been mapped with spatial resolutions of better than 0.5 m. Although its spatial resolution is considerably lower than radar, seismic refraction achieves superior penetration in electrically conductive environments such as clay and silt soils. The seismic refraction method thus proves to be complementary to the radar method. The seismic reflection technique is analogous to the radar method. Current seismic instrumentation and energy sources however, provide limited spatial resolution and do not permit the use of seismic reflection for reflecting horizons lying at depths of less than 20 m to 30 m.This paper discusses the use of both radar and seismic methods for placer exploration. The radar and seismic techniques, the field methods, equipment, and data displays are presented. Field examples illustrate the high resolution mapping capabilities of the techniques. The radar data agree very well with the borehole data, and in fact they sometimes detect subtle soil strata variations associated with changes of permeability that were not initially observed in the borehole logging. The radar method can give a continuous profile of water table and bedrock in sandy soils. Seismic soundings are necessary to differentiate between the bedrock and water table reflections observed by the radar."

Table I shows major end-uses for industrial minerals in manufacturing sectors. At Energy, Mines and Resources, industrial minerals are divided in three major categories: (I) agro chemicals and chemicals, (2) construction mineral s, and (3) ceramics and specialty minerals. A listing of the major groups of minerals is shown in Table 2. Agro-chemicals and chemicals are sold on the basis of their chemical content and purity. Construction minerals or structural minerals are distinguished by their performance as low cost and bulky commodities. Ceramics and specialty minerals are performance-specific and are sold for their property on imparting functions on end-products. Industrial minerals have unique characteristics that are useful in many stages of processing; from crushed size to micronized fillers a single mineral ca n serve a broad range of industries because of its intrinsic properties."

Bismuth is a notorious contaminant in the electrolytic refining of Cu that can cause cathodes to fail to meet ASTM International standards and not be suitable for use in Cu rod and other downstream products. Bismuth can significantly decrease electrical conductivity, decrease the mechanical strength of the annealed wire, retard recrystallization, and sometimes induce hot shortness during the hot rolling process in the production of rod. As a result, the control of Bi in the refinery tankhouse must be carefully managed. This paper describes how SuperLig® Molecular Recognition Technology (MRT) is being used for Bi removal at the Birla Copper Dahej Copper refinery. The operation of the SuperLig® MRT Bi removal plant is described and data on Bi removal efficiency are presented. INTRODUCTION Hindalco’s Cu division, Birla Copper, operates one of the largest Cu refineries in the world at Dahej, Gujarat; India. The main feed for this refinery is produced at the company’s smelter. Due to its massive production capacity, this operation mainly relies on imported Cu concentrates resulting in a variety of metals being carried out as impurities in the Cu anodes because pyrometallurgical technologies alone are not enough to remove them to the extent required. Metal impurities found in Cu ores include Fe, Zn, As, Pb, Bi, and Sb. During electrorefining, less noble metals dissolve in the electrolyte gradually increasing their concentrations creating the need for electrolyte control mechanisms that remove these impurities with varying degrees of success (Wang, 2004; Navarro et al., 2013.) Bismuth is one of the most significant impurities in a Cu refinery because it has the lowest ASTM product specification. This situation is critical because the Bi potential is very close to that of Cu making it possible to plate in the Cu cathode directly. Also, Bi can precipitate at high concentrations causing floating slimes and reduction of current efficiency (Ballinas, San Miguel, Munoz, & Gyves, 2003). Production of high purity cathodes from feed stock containing a diverse range of metal impurities becomes a major challenge in the refining of Cu (Izatt et al., 2015). In this work, the purification strategy followed by Birla Copper for the removal of Bi using a separation process based on MRT is presented, outlining the loading and stripping performance of SuperLig®83 and the benefits of using MRT over other lower selectivity methods where hazardous materials are produced instead of high purity products.

"In many plant trial s(1,2) it has been proven that very small amounts (10 to 20 ppm) of uranium dissolved in mine water can be effectively recovered by the use of ion exchange resins and this uranium recovery has many advantages. In this paper an economic analysis at different levels of uranium contamination and at different market prices of uranium are described.For this study an operating mine-mill complex with a sulphuric acid leach circuit, followed by solvent extraction (SX) process, is considered, where contaminated mine water is available in excess of process requirements. lt is further assumed that the sulphuric acid eluant containing uranium would be mixed with the mill pregnant liquor stream that proceeds to the SX plant for final uranium recovery.Recovery by Ion ExchangeMine water, in this study, is defined as the water coming from the underground mine, or mine pits, and the run-off water from stockpiles, mine shops, crushing plant , washdown areas, etc.In nature, uranium mainly occurs in two stages; reduced (tetravalent) and oxidized (hexavalent) . The oxidation of sulphides present in the orebody often causes the presence of S04- and acidity in mine water, and this acidic water readily dissolves U+6 part of the depo sit. "Prior or simultaneous addition of ammonium sulphate can, not only enhance the activating effect of hydrosulphide ions on xanthate flotation of malachite but it can also eliminate possible detrimental or depressing effects of excess residual hydrosulphide . Use of relatively inexpensive ammonium sulphate appears to reduce the consumption of the much more expensive sulphidizing agent for optimal flotation recovery INTRODUCTIONOxidized copper minerals float poorly with conventional thiol-type collectors. This is believed to be due to the nonadherent character of the collector coating, which is readily re- moved by particle abrasion. Rosas and Polingr reported emulsion flotation seemed capable of resisting abrasion during the flotation of non-sulphide copper ores. It appears that the most common flotation technique for oxidized copper minerals comprises sulphidization with Na .S and subsequent treatment by sulphydryl collector. The principles of this method are available . Malghan recently reviewed the studies on the role of sodium sulphide in the flotation of oxidized copper, lead and zinc minerals.It is well known that in the sulphidized flotation of malachite, the activation process depends strongly on the concentration of the sulphidizing agent, i.e., insufficient sulphide gives poor recoveries because of inadequate sulphidization; excessive sulphide also causes poor recoveries due to the depressive effect of the residual hydro-sulphide ions in solution. A major difficulty in sulphidization, especially with a varying feed nature, is to establish and maintain the optimum sulphide concentration in solution. In plant practice, vigorous control of sodium sulphide is required and stepwise addition of the reagent is recommended to improve the efficiency of the process. Soto and Laskowskim have found that malachite, depressed by an excess of sulphide ions, can restore its floatability if air or oxygen is introduced to the pulp. They attributed this to the oxidation of the HS - ions on the surface of the mineral. Jones and Woodcockuvi showed that a sulphide ion selective electrode could be used to optimize the conditions (e.g . amount of hydrosulphide, sulphidization time, flotation time) more readily and precisely than existing methods in the flotation of oxidized copper ores."

Some are passed on from father to son, some are part of the pride of good farming, some wells are famous for tapping that huge underground stream or have been mysteriously witched or have been part of a rip-off by an unscrupulous well driller. Some have to be babied so that the cows can be watered, the children can have showers and the dishes can be done. All wells represent a significant $5,000 to $10,000 investment and is a key to making a living or sustaining a reasonable lifestyle.Most wells continue to provide water faithfully - until there is a problem. For those people living next to a mine, there is the additional concern that mining has or will affect their water well supplies. Water well problems reported to the mining company have to be dealt with promptly and responsibly. The mining company's groundwater specialist must gain the trust and confidence of well owners living in the area ."

"A mathematical procedure for determining the underground mining level layout which minimizes the total costs of excavation and haulage is described. This procedure has the advantage over previous graphical procedures of being easily amenable to microcomputers. The paper demonstrates through examples how the procedure can be applied to minimizing discounted costs of level layout as well as providing the optimal location of a production shaft.IntroductionIn recent years there have been numerous publications in mining journals concerning the minimization of mine haulage costs. With the rapid escalation of energy costs during the last decade it is not surprising that several studies applying queuing theory, simulation and mathematical programming to mining related transportation problems have been successfully undertaken. Because of the increasing availability of various sizes of computers these techniques have gained considerable popularity as evidenced by the numerous commercial packages presently being marketed.The publications concerned with haulage cost minimization are generally concluded along the lines of ' ... haulage costs at production rate x will be minimized by assigning y units to location z...'. Details about the route followed and whether it guarantees a minimization of costs are seldom considered. Route data has to date been manually resolved and used for input to developed programs. It would appear that no program has been developed to date which simultaneously minimizes costs by both fleet assignment and routing network resolution.Another important factor in transportation problems is the investment cost associated with the routes; road construction costs or, in the case of underground levels, drift excavation costs. Except for special cases the transport network which minimizes haulage costs only will not provide a minimum excavation cost solution.Zarnbo(1) illustrates by graphical and mathematical procedures how central 'facilities' can be located to simultaneously minimize investment in the transport network and haulage costs. Unfortunately these procedures and others recently applied to mine haulage problems do not provide solutions to the generalized problem. Also because these procedures are geared to graphical solutions and hand computations whereby certain possibilities can be 'visually' eliminated, they can be tedious to program and present storage capacity constraints with current microcomputers."

Dissociative adsorption of hydrogen (deuterium) on thin gold films grown on Ir{111} surface has been studied with temperature-programmed desorption using a quadrupole mass spectrometer and nuclear reaction analysis. Thin Au{111} films are epitaxially grown on Ir{111}. Surprisingly, H2 (D2) can dissociatively adsorb on these Au{111} films, although it is well known that Au surfaces are noble enough not to dissociate hydrogen molecules [B. Hammer and J.K. Nørskov, Nature 376, (1995) 238]. We attribute this to the sensitivity of hydrogen to changes in the local surface properties, e.g., electron localization (the narrowing of the s-band, the s-band center model), which could explain the upto now unexpected high for the reactivity of a thin Au{111} surface. Moreover, we found that H (D) atoms can be confined into a Au thin film and/or the interface between an Ir surface and the thin Au film. We demonstrate how anomalously reactive thin Au films grown on an Ir surface are, and also compare the Au films with Ag films grown on Ir to test the validity/generality of our proposed s-band center model.

"Dust size distribution and aerosol size distribution measurements have been carried out in several Canadian underground uranium mines. In addition, dust samples have been analyzed for long-lived radioactive products of the U-238 and Th-232 natural decay chains using ex-spectroscopy and -y-spectroscopy techniques.From the data collected one may summarize: (a) most airborne particulates are of size below I u-m and 50% by mass are found above 1 u-m; (b) dust clouds are bimodal; (c) preferential deposition of radon (thoron) daughters takes place on airborne particulates in the sub -micron range at about 0.1 u-m; (d) deposition of radon (thoron) daughters is proportional to particle surface area; and (e) ex-spectroscopy and -y-spectroscopy of dust samples reveals the presence of U-238, Ra-226 and some of their short-lived and long-lived decay products.IntroductionExtended inhalation of airborne radioisotopes poses a potential health problem to occupational workers. Because of this, monitoring of radiation and dust levels for dose exposure calculation purposes is not only recommended but in most cases mandatory.CANMET (Energy, Mines a nd Resources Canada) has long since been engaged in a comprehensive monitoring program aimed at determining dust concentrations in the respirable size range, aerosol concentration in the sub-micron range, and in the radioactivity associated with these particulates in underground uranium mines. Measurements have been carried-out with gravimetric dust samplers, dust size selectors (including a horizontal elutriator , a fineparticle spectrometer and Nuclepore* filters of different pore sizes) and a condensation nucleus counter(1 – 6). Inactive and active working sites have been monitored according to some typical mining operations. A summary of these data has been given elsewhere(3- 5)."

"The pendulum in Ottawa has swung dramatically from fiscal policy to monetary policy over the last several years. International trends indicate that the pendulum has to start its swing the other way, if Canada's mining industry is to maintain its preeminent position in the global mining arena. This article, which is based on a paper presented by the author at the 37th Annual Meeting of the Newfoundland Branch of CIM, identifies these trends and how they could interact with Canadian policy.IntroductionThe title of this paper is not a very imaginative or catchy one, but it states the topic quite succinctly, if not tersely. This paper looks into a crystal ball to see what might be in store for mine financing over the balance of the current decade.In the event that the reader feels some trepidation about the prospect that such a paper could seek to be the definitive work on the subject, it should be made clear at the outset that this is not the case. The author is, after all, not an economist, a scholar, a financial analyst, or a soothsayer, but is rather a simple accountant who has been closely involved with the mining industry, and the financing thereof, for some twenty years.The paper recognizes that, while a mine may be born when production begins, the mine is conceived when exploration starts. As this act of conception is obviously an essential part of mining, the financing of exploration is also covered in this paper. To attain a focus, this paper approaches the topic of mine financing in the nineties as follows: first, the major emerging forces in the industry are identified: and, second, the implications of each of these forces on financing are considered."

"The Iron Ore Company of Canada (IOCC} has mined and processed an iron deposit in Western Labrador along the Labrador-Quebec border since the early 1960' s. Current capacity is approximately 19 million tonnes of concentrate, 70% of which is converted to pellets at these facilities.The ore deposits are located in hills rising 150 to 300 meters above the adjacent lakes, and most of them are covered by very little overburden. The iron minerals are mainly specular hematite and magnetite hosted in a quartz formation. Crude ore averages 40% Fe that is concentrated to 65.5% Fe. IOCC is an extensive operation extending from Labrador City NF to Sept-Iles Quebec. It consists of open pit mining, concentrating, pelletizing, railway, and dock loading facilities.The Concentrator liberates iron from the silica by crushing and grinding the ore to -14 mesh (-1190 microns}. Ground ore is concentrated in spirals and filtered for transportation. Spiral tailings are treated in a Magnetic Recovery Plant (Mag Plant} that recovers lost magnetite. Mag Plant tailings are treated in a Hematite Spiral Plant (Hem Plant} that scavenges fine iron remaining in this stream.This report deals with ongoing iron recovery initiatives within the ConcentratorIron Losses in the ConcentratorIron recovery at IOCC is approximately 70.5%. This compares with recoveries that range from 65% to 86% for other iron mines in our area. Other world large iron ore producers dig and ship concentrate quality ore directly out of the ground and have an effective recovery of 100%. With increasing costs for labour, equipment, and supplies an increase in iron recovery is required to keep the operation viable.More than 90% of our iron concentrate is produced by gravity separation using spirals. The physical characteristics of the iron minerals that most effect recovery are mineral grain size and degree of liberation. We divide ground ore into three size categories -coarse, intermediate, and fines. A brief description of each size fraction follows:"

"AbstractA technique is described for preparation of palladium sponge and for spectrochemical analysis of the metal in this form. The precision and accuracy of the method are discussed. Analyses are compared with previous spectrochemical analyses of palladium in the black form. Good agreement was found in the two sets •of results and it is concluded that they are more reliable than wet chemical .analyses of the same material.IntroductionFOR SEVERAL YEARS the problem of platinum metal analysis by spectrochemical methods has been under investigation at the Spedtrographic Laboratory, Department of Geological Sciences, Queen's University. The problem, briefly -stated, is as follows: Samples of platinum, palladium,-rhodium, ruthenium, and iridium are received as fine metal powders, called sponge. Direct spectrographic analysis of this material has not been found satisfactory due to its heterogeneity •as regards contaminant metals, which may be present up to a total of one per •cent or more. Further-more, spectrographic standards are difficult to obtain and difficult to prepare accurately by adding weighed portions of contaminant metals to the sponge. The fact that •contaminant metals in original samples are probably alloyed with the major constituent is a further difficulty since complete fusion of these refractory metals proved impractical in the present case as a means of standard preparation. It •has, therefore, been found most satisfactory to dissolve the metals, prepare standards by addition of solutions of contaminant metals, and to reduce both standards and samples to a homogeneous form. A previous paper, by Hawley, Wark, Lewis and Ott (2) dealt with a method for spectrochemical analysis of platinum and palladium in their black form. Since completion of research on the black technique, the possibility of analyzing palladium accurately in its sponge form has• been investigated."

"Scientists throughout the world have observed radioactive disequilibrium in the uranium decay series. Radiometric and fluorometric determinations of U in plants from the Goldfields district and in sediments and rocks from the Beaverlodge district exhibit marked radioactive disequilibrium. The eU/U ratio in plants rooted in mineralized ground shifts from greater than unity to less than unity for those rooted in background soils. IntroductionDisequilibrium in the U decay series has been studied for many years and is observed in almost all surficial environments. Rosholt (1959) measured U, 234Pa, 23O'fh, 226Ra, 222Rn, and 210Pb in a large number of U ores and outlined six types of situations to explain disequilibrium. Davy (1974) outlines the geological significance of radioactive disequilibrium situations with respect to exploration. Levinson and Coetzee (1978) discuss possible mechanisms by which separations of parent and daughter elements are affected and suggest analytical pitfalls that may be encountered in the use of radiometric techniques when disequilibrium has occurred. Generally, it is the oxyphile and easily complexed parent 238U (with its associated isotopes 235 U and 234U) that is leached from rocks and soils at a faster rate than are the daughters, 230Th, 226Ra, 2loPb, and 206Pb. "The mining industry is taking advantage of the increased performance resulting from the use of variable speed A C drives for large motors. This technology provides increased efficiency under the variable speed and torque requirements of such drives as mine hoists, conveyors, and air moving equipment. The technology does introduce voltage spikes on the voltage wave form that stress the insulation system to a greater degree than would occur with a constant voltage source. These voltage spikes must be considered in the design of the insulation system used for these motors.BackgroundHistorically the insulation systems for large AC motors were designed to withstand with reasonable life the voltage stresses of a 60 Hz constant sinusoidal voltage. One of the design tests is a voltage endurance test that requires the application of a 60 Hz voltage from conductor to ground equal to four to five times normal and establishing a time to failure. These higher than normal voltages accelerate the normal aging process by causing extensive partial discharge activity (corona) within the insulation system and the time to failure is a relative indication of insulation life.In addition to the voltage endurance test at 60 Hz, the individual coils are subjected to a surge voltage test to establish the withstand capability of the turn to turn insulation under switching surge conditions. The surge voltage is a fast rise time, 0.2 microsecond to crest value, voltage spike that can be caused by a circuit breaker or contactor closing operation. These voltage spikes can have a crest value of greater than 3.5 times the normal line to ground crest voltage of the normal 60 Hz power supply. The standard withstand test value is thus 3.5 times normal line to ground voltage. Because the voltage surges or spikes occur mainly during start and stop switching conditions, voltage endurance under these conditions has not been a major factor in insulation system design."
