FROM time to time articles have appeared in the technical press on the interesting subject of surface combustion. The theoretical part of the problem has, for practical purposes, received ample consideration in those articles, but the number of practical applications of surface combustion referred to has generally been very small.It is the writer's object to review some recent developments in surface combustion, and also to try to arrive at an estimate of its advantages and possibilities. It is not necessary for this purpose to dilate upon the phenomenon of surface combustion itself. Many interesting things have been said on the subject by Pro£. W. A. Bone, of Leeds, to whose researches the recent developments are largely due. A few illustrations may make clear what is meant by surface combustion.Prof. Bone, in an experiment, took a platinum crucible, which he heated in the flame of a Meker-burner. Then he turned the gas off for a second, and, opening the stop-cock again, allowed the combustible mixture to impinge upon the crucible, thetemperature of which was still well below the ignition temperature of the gas. Although no flame was visible at this stage, it was soon clear that, nevertheless, the gas and air had continued to combine, as the crucible would attain a red heat after a few seconds.Another instance of surface combustion was shown by a Mr. Fletcher, in 1882. He placed an iron ball, weighing 3 lb., on a slab of fireclay, heated it for a few seconds with a blow-pipe, and blew the flame out, leaving the gas-mixture still...

The ore, as sent to the sulphide mill, is a mixture, in varying proportions, of oxidized ore from above the 450-ft. level and sulphide ore from above and below (to date mainly from above) that level. The oxidized ore consists essentially of quartz, with varying amounts of kaolin and clayey material which passes into the slime and, in excess, creates a serious problem in settling. Pyrite may be present in small amounts. The gold is free and extremely fine.The ore, classed as sulphide, consists of pyritic material in a quartz gangue. The sulphides have been exposed to weathering, leaching by descending solutions and attack by ascending gases and actual burning. The alteration products occur in widely varying proportions and this variation adds to the difficulties in settling and control of grinding and flotation.Copper Minerals.-Chalcopyrite is the principal copperbearing mineral with smaller and varying amounts of covellite, which is sometimes associated with chalcocite, both these minerals being apparently of secondary origin.Examination of tailing by Dr. Stillwell has revealed all stages between clean chalcopyrite, chalcopyrite tinged with covellite, covellite with residual cores of chalcopyrite and clean covellite.The chalcopyrite is free floating, very few particles of clean chalcopyrite being observed in the tailing from granular flotation. Longwall mining and related subsidence, and watercourse diversion for surface mining operations have the potential to impact on fluvial geomorphic processes and the health of river systems. This is evident in the Isaac River in central Queensland. The scale and likelihood of these impacts are a function of the extent of existing and proposed mining developments and of the ongoing geomorphic, hydrologic and ecological processes within the Isaac River. Understanding the objectives for the river, the past and ongoing processes at work, the cumulative impacts of longwall mining development and the options for managing those impacts is essential for the development of an effective strategy to manage the health of the river system. An assessment has been undertaken to identify and understand the cumulative impacts of mining subsidence and other mining influences on geomorphic processes and waterway health in the Isaac River over a river length of approximately 100 km near Moranbah in central Queensland. The assessment included the development of a vision and objectives for waterway health. The assessment has identified mining and landuse changes that have impacted on the hydrology, geomorphology, ecology and hence the health of the Isaac River. The assessment has then sought to identify the cumulative impact of longwall mining and related subsidence on current stream condition and the proposed vision for the system. The primary impact of longwall mining on the river was found to be associated with sediment transport. The investigation included assess- ment of total sand available for transport, the volume of sand transported annually and the fluvial process response to subsidence. Recommendations have been developed for the management of the system and for longwall mining to increase system robustness and achieve the river health objectives.

Froth flotation of iron ores is one of the most widely used methods to upgrade iron ore into high-grade concentrates. In recent years, reverse cationic flotation of iron ores has been specifically the subject of several studies. Since quartz is the most common gangue mineral in iron ores, understanding the behaviour of this mineral was the main target of the majority of such studies. However, with the depletion of mineral deposits considered rich and easy to process, it has become more common to find iron ores with complex gangue minerals, which are composed not only of quartz but by a variety of silicates. The mineralogical composition of the ore is an important factor for determining reagents and mineral processing parameters. The mineralogical suite of an ore also presents a paramount role for operational optimisation of any given flotation process. Some studies were performed with different types of amphiboles and other Fe-bearing silicates, for example, but the influence of the mineralogical nature of these silicates in reverse cationic flotation has not been fully explored and will be discussed here. Changes in the traditionally used reagent scheme for reverse cationic flotation, generally including alkaline pH values, polysaccharides as depressant (mainly starches) and primary ether amines and diamines, are expected when dealing with iron ores with complex silicate gangue composition.CITATION:Veloso de Melo, C H, Correa de Araujo, A and Filippov, L O, 2017. The following paper on the development of processes for the treatment of crude ore, accumulated dumps of tailing and slime at Broken Hill, has been prepared by a committee of the Broken Hill Branch of the Australasian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy, with the object of recording, in chronological order, the developments of the various processes which have led up to the metallurgical practice of the present day.

The notes from which this paper has been prepared were set down at the time of the author's departure from Australia in 1935. Mr. Frank Forman, Government Geologist of Western Australia, who has very kindly read the paper in manuscript, affirms that the views here set forth are now accepted by most geologists. Thus, Forman's recent presidential address before the Royal Society of Western Australia (1937) mentions sediments in the Kalgoorlie Series "including banded jaspers and jaspilites."While it may, therefore, be superfluous to belabour the question further at this time, Mr. Forman has encouraged the author to publish this paper as a summary or both past and present views.To those specially interested in the subject of the paper, a study of pertinent Plates attached to Western Australian Geological Survey Bulletin No. 71, 1917, is suggested.The type of rock which is variously called "jasper bar," jaspilite, or "ferruginous quartzite" is familiar to all mining men who have worked in the West Australian goldfields.In its typical form it is a "striped" rock consisting of alternate layers of white or pinkish silica with red to brown bands of iron-bearing silica.In the course of geological work in many parts of Western Australia I studied exposures of jasper bar and was repeatedly impressed with the similarity of much of the material to the sedimentary "banded iron formation" of Canada. It was, therefore, a surprise to learn that the jasper bars were not generally regarded in Australia as sedimentary horizons. The Batu Hijau porphyry Cu-Au deposit in south-western Sumbawa, Indonesia is an ideal natural laboratory to study the fractionation of iron isotopes in magmatic rocks that range in composition from basaltic andesite to tonalite. Intrusive rocks are associated with a porphyry system that contains well-preserved early hypogene copper mineralisation. We analysed pre-, syn- and post-mineralisation igneous intrusive rocks. We also separated magnetite, chalcopyrite and bornite from hypogene porphyry-style quartz veins, and measured the Fe-isotope ratios of samples by solution multi-collector ICP-MS. Iron isotopic composition of samples from the magmatic suite show an increasing d57Fe with increasing SiO2, supporting geochemical and textural evidence that the Batu Hijau Tonalites underwent closed system fractionation. Equilibrium and co-existing mineral textures allow the calculation of the following preliminary empirical mineral-mineral fractionation factors at 500°C for certain mineral pairs.Iron isotopes have the potential to provide geothermometric data to complement fluid inclusion data, especially where heating stages have operational limitations and where fluid boiling results in a wide variety of inclusion types that may make analysis difficult.CITATION:Wawryk, C M, Foden, J D and Garwin, S L, 2015. AMONG the multifarious duties which fall to the lot of a mining engineer it is safe to say that there is none of more fundamental importance than the study of the ore-deposits on which it is thefunction of his profession to operate, inasmuch as the whole business of mining in all its complicated ramifications rests first of all on the existence of something to mine. -When the ore supplies in a mine fail, the enterprise comes to- an end, and nothing, therefore, is of more importance than a thorough understanding of the conditions under which the ore occurs, so that everything possible may be done to open up the mines well ahead of their immediate output requirements, and develop new ore reserves to take the place of that which is raised from day to day. The great aim which the mining engineer has to keep before him in his study of his ore-deposits is to obtain such a knowledge of them that he will have sound grounds for prediction as to how they will behave in parts of the mines which are well beyond the point of the pick. It is on his judgment of probabilities in this respect that mining operations are entered upon, and the more thorough his knowledge of all the factors affecting the problem, the more is the judgmentlikely to be a sound one. The test of any theory is experimental confirmation of the truth of predictions based upon it, and our aim should be to try to perfect our knowledge of the rules governing deposition of ores, so that our theories may prove themselves equal to the task of successful prediction.

Gold in the stibnite veins of Costerfield, Victoria, was described in 1922 1, prior to any mineragraphic examination, as (a) free yellow gold (b) free rusty gold and (c) combined gold. The free yellow gold occurs in quartz and will amalgamate with mercury. The free gold of dull, rusty or copper-red colour occurs in massive stibnite and has been stated to resist amalgamation with mercury. The dull colour is only skin deep and the colour is bright when the rusty gold is scratched. The appearance of the rusty gold is spongy or cellular and it generally occurs near small cavities in the stibnite. The suggestion that the cellular character indicated the removal of a certain amount of stibnite leaving a residue of se.condary gold cannot be sustained.It now appears probable that the rusty gold is formed by the primary dissociation of a gold antimonide and is distinct in origin from the normal yellow gold which is deposited with quartz or stibnite from auriferous mineral solutions.The combined gold referred to in the earlier paper was the gold contained in the stibnite as revealed by assay. Such gold was at first thought to be either dissolved in the stibnite or else present as free interstitial particles too minute for observation in transmitted light in thin sections.Subsequent examination of numerous polished,surfaces disclosed the small particles of gold occurring in the grain boundaries in aggregates of fine grained stibnite 2. The assumption that all the gold in the stibnite, as revealed by assay, occurred in this way is now known to be incorrect, because limited amounts of a gold antimonide have been found in the veins.

The Pilbara region of Western Australia is well known for its abundant exports of hematite-goethite deposits, which have been mined and exported since the 1960s. Magnetite has also been mined in Australia throughout this period, although historically of much lower production volumes (WA Iron Ore profile, 2016). Magnetite offers a source supply of material >66 per cent iron grade product, which is used as premium feed (predominantly pellets) to blast furnaces or specialised steel mills.The Iron Bridge project area contains outcropping magnetite and hematite banded iron formation (BIF), which within the region was recognised as having potential to host economic mineralisation during the 1960s. Development within the project area, however, did not commence until Fortescue Metals Group acquired the tenements based on a 2004 agreement, formed a joint venture with interested groups and then initiated an assessment for magnetite (rather than hematite) mining potential. The combined deposits now have an identified large mineral resource inventory, with test work demonstrating they are able to produce a magnetite concentrate of greater than 66 per cent Fe over an extended mine life. This concentrate would be suitable for forming pellets or feed for direct reduced iron products.The deposits form a singular orebody, approximately 12 km in length by 1 km in width and extending to depths beyond 600 m. The four main deposits are geographically separate and have subtle mineralogical differences, thought driven by the degree of deformation and alteration within each area.Definition of the stratigraphy, structure and key mineralogy of the deposits has been carried out through several stages of exploration and project development. This has also included recent mining and processing of more than 1 Mt of feed material to an on-site processing facility. This demonstrated at a production scale that dry plus wet processing techniques can efficiently separate the magnetite from the gangue minerals to form a suitable (marketable) product.Geometallurgical classification of the host stratigraphy has been carried out from analysing the high volume of quantitative data available for this deposit. This has allowed definition of mappable units within the fresh BIF to be used as a driver in mine scheduling, delivering optimal feed to the processing plant.Construction of mine and processing facilities is expected to commence once all technical risks have been addressed, market conditions are deemed appropriate and approval is given by the joint venture partners.CITATION:Simpson, C, 2017. The epithermal gold-silver deposits wall poster is one in a series of posters on different mineral deposit types being produced by GNS Science to raise awareness of the characteristics of New Zealand mineral deposits and their prospectivity. Epithermal deposits consist of quartz veins, quartz vein stockworks and hydrothermal breccias that are mainly hosted in subaerial andesitic or rhyolitic rocks of Tertiary age. The deposits were formed at depths of typically less than 1 km and at temperatures between 180¦ and 320¦C, although ore grade mineralisation was generally deposited at less than 270¦C.   In New Zealand, epithermal deposits occur in association with late Cenozoic volcanic rocks in the Northland, Coromandel and Taupo volcanic regions. All of the past and present gold production, estimated at greater than 380 t (along with 1300 t Ag) comes from the Miocene-Pliocene Coromandel Volcanic Zone, where about 50 epithermal gold-silver deposits occur over a 200 km long belt. In Northland, silver and mercury have been produced from hot spring type epithermal deposits, and several gold-silver prospects have been identified. Ore grade gold-silver mineralisation is currently being deposited in several active geothermal fields of the Taupo Volcanic Zone, and extinct geothermal systems occur on the western side of the zone. The active systems have provided natural laboratories to help understand the processes of epithermal mineralisation.

Mt Waruwari, host to the Porgera underground gold mine in the Highlands of Papua New Guinea (PNG), is a prominent ridge of sediments and dioritic intrusives rising approximately 600m above the surrounding valley floor. Consequently, mining occurs in a low stress environment where structural and material considerations are foremost in the design of ground support and reinforcement. Three major rock types are encountered in the underground mine. These are locally referred to as "black sediments" (slightly indurated mudstones and clayey siltstones), "altered sediments" (derived from black sediments by thermal metamorphism), and "intrusives" of dioritic composition. The rocks are moderately to highly fractured, the black sediments being generally weak and occasionally sheared while the altered sediments and intrusives are quite strong but often brittle. Mining takes place from a series of stopes extracted by either slot and mass blast or a modified vertical crater retreat method (VCR), which are backfilled with a cemented rock fill. Ground support and reinforcement has been relatively conserv- ative to date and generally relies on pattern reinforcement of all development with cement grouted "rebar" bolts and mesh, extending to pattern cable bolting with occasional mesh in stope backs. In addition there has been considerable reinforcement of stope hangingwalls in some cases. A programme of broad scale structural mapping, monitoring with extensometers, material property testing, and stress analysis has been devised to allow optimum design of ground support and reinforcement in the future. Particles of a complex nickel sulphide concentrate (containing pyrite, pyrrhotite, pentIandite, and violarite as the major mineralogical constituents) were entrained in a stream of hot gas the temperature of which was varied from 500 to -1000°C. Chemical analysis of the particulates collected from the furnace was used to detect the rapid change in sulphur content which accompanied the ignition temperature jump. X-ray diffraction analysis was used to characterize the oxidized material.These techniques showed that ignition was dependent on the mineralogical composition and occurred over the temperature range 500-900°C. Pyrite ignited first in the range 500-600°C; pyrrhotite was the least reactivemineral and required temperatures in excess of 800°C for ignition. The nickel minerals <pentIandite and violarite decomposed before ignition and ignited at temperatures intermediate to those required for the pyrite and pyrrhotite. The ignition temperature for the pyrite was found to be independent of particle size and concentration of oxygen in the atmosphere.Ignition temperatures determined by the simulated flash smelting method were compared with the results of differential thermal analysis (DTA) measurements performed on the same concentrate. Temperaturesdetermined in the DTA test as corresponding to the start of exothermic activity were shown to be at least 100°C below those determined by the simulation test.

For each tonne of chromite ore mined in Sukinda, approximately ten tonnes of fine overburden material is generated. The overburden typically contains about 30 - 60 per cent Fe2O3, 0.3 - 1.1 per cent Ni, four to nine per cent Cr2O3 and 0.04 - 0.2 per cent cobalt and is being discarded leading to loss of valuable metals and creating environmental pollution. In order to take the advantage of presence of iron, nickel and chromium, the present studies advocate the utilisation of nickel lateritic chromite overburden for production of Ni bearing pig iron through blast furnace extracting maximum iron and nickel from the chromite overburden. The present paper deals mainly with the beneficiation of chromite overburden, sintering characteristics and thermodynamic studies. The beneficiation study shows that a beneficiated concentrate having Fe - 50 per cent and Ni -- 1.1 per cent can be achieved from chromite overburden having Fe - 30 per cent and Ni -- 0.7 per cent. Sintering studies have been carried out with bed height of 300 and 450 mm at a suction of 600 and 900 WG respectively. The results reveal that good quality sinter can be produced from chromite overburden concentrate with a basicity of about 1.0 and coke breeze consumption rate about 16 per cent. In all the experiments, Tumbler Index, Abrasion Index and Shatter Index was found to be in the range of 65 - 70, 4.5 - 5.5 and 85 - 90 respectively. The other parameters namely softening temperature, melt down temperature, reduction degradation test and relative reducibility have also been determined. A thermodynamic analysis has also been carried out to make a technological assessment of the process for the production of alloyed pig iron from chromite overburden in blast furnace which shows that it is possible to produce nickel bearing pig iron in blast furnace using the sinter up to 80 per cent. Techno-economic analysis reveals that this route will yield a substantial profit even after accounting for cost of beneficiation, extra coke, raw materials and extra slag produced.

An intensely sheared and mineralized zone occurs in the quartz dolerite greenstone (or younger greenstone) mass on the western limb of the Kalgoorlie syncline. This zone comprises the western part of the Golden Mile and has produced the greater part of the 33,000,000 oz of gold produced to date from the main mining belts. A study of the general geological and structural features suggests that the lode shear system will continue southward on a pitch similar to that of the main syncline. Although payable ore has been found recently further to the south, the expectation of large quantities extending southward from the present mining areas is problematical.INTRODUCTIONUntil the late 1930's the principal mining activities in the western lode system were centred on three major ore-shoots formed on the No. 4, No. 3 and to a lesser extent on the No. 2 lode shears (Fig. 1). With the gradual reduction of grade in depth on these main ore shoots, increasing attention was paid to the "Minor Lode" system of lode shears known to exist in the same area. A large quantity of payable ore was found on these "Minor Lodes" particularly in the central part of the mining area. In recent years more attention has been given to exploration in a southerly direction.ROCK TYPES AND STRUCTURESThe western system occurs on the western flank of a dragfolded, south pitching syncline. The rock succession consists of Black Flag sediments overlying the younger greenstone horizon which overlies the fine grained older greenstone horizon. The axis of the syncline is regarded as a tight infold of the overlying Black Flag sediments. This paper describes the results of VLF-EM test surveys, using the Ronka EM-16 equipment, over a selection of environments in Australia and Papua.Using comparisons with known geology, drilling information and other geophysical work it is shown that the maximum depth of penetration of the method is about 100 ft but is considerably less than this in most areas.The author believes the method could aid in geological mapping and provide a useful adjunct to aeromagnetic surveying in some areas.

GOLD has played a part in the development of Australia. The total yield exceeds SIX hundred million pounds sterling, while the glamour of gold-mining and the unfailing demand for the product have enhanced its influence. The production is still considerable, but the yield is less than one-quarter of that twenty years previously, while the number of men employed has dropped from 70,000 to 11,000. Not only has there been a marked decline in production, but it is anticipated that thisdecline will continue, and continue more markedly. It is therefore desirable to ascertain the causes of the decline and inquire into means for diminishing or preventing it.The problem under discussion is far from being only local. Finlay states: The grand feature of the history of the business has been the progress of an economic cycle unfavourable to gold milling. The USA yield fell from $101,000,000 to $44,000,000.South Afriea has for some time produced one-half of the world's gold; yet in the Mining and Scientific Press of 11th February, IH22, General Smuts is quoted as saying that if the premium disappeared entirely 24 out of 34 mines would shut down. Various steps, and complete sequences, for the recovery of lead and zinc from a mixed sulphide concentrate, high in silica and pyrite, have been tested.Oxidation steps of roasting in air or in a sulphating atmosphere and use of aqueous acidic, ammoniacal, and near neutral oxidation media were compared. Oxidation roasting or use of acidic media appeared most useful. Procedures for dissolution of zinc from calcines using sulphuric and sulphurous acid to avoid silica gelation problems are compared and a direct leaching procedure with sulphuric 'acid at controlled pH shown to be the most useful.Methods for the removal of germanium, nickel, and magnesium from zinc sulphate solutions prior to zinc electrodeposition were tested. The recoveries of zinc from ammoniacal solutions by electrolysis and distillation are compared.The dissolution of lead compounds from the residue of zinc extraction by amine and ammoniacal ammonium sulphate (AAS) solutions Was tested. Lead, sulphide was precipitated in filtera'ble form from AAS solutions. The reduction of lead sulphate to lead sulphide with sulphur was difficult, but possible. The various steps were used to deveiop five complete processing sequences, of which two were shown to be technically feasible and have potential economic viability.

THE machine from which the following results were obtained makes one of a row of seven at work in the Junction North, Concentration Mill at Broken Hill, New South Wales. It consists essentially of a belt for dressing purposes, which travels round two 12-in drums situated at either end of a wooden frame. This frame is supported on wooden legs, and the whole is affixed to two iron castings, one on either side of the frame. A to-and-fro motion is obtained from an eccentric shaft, which, together with the stationary end of the supporting legs, is carried by the iron castings. A belt drive to the forward drum provides a constant rate of travel to the dressing belt.The top half of the dressing belt is supported on 3-in rollers spaced about 12-in centres along the frame of the vanner. A fairly thick dressing belt is used, and no trouble whatever is experienced from the formation of gutters between the rollers.These belts are 28 ft 4 in long, 4 ft wide, 3-16 in thick, and are made of two-ply 32-oz duck, with a coating of rubber on either side. The surface available for dressing is about 10 ft 6 in x 3 ft 8 in- ie, about 38'5 square feet. The machine is driven atthe rate of 245 i-in strokes per minute, while the dressing belt travels at 15 feet per minute...
