The geostatistical Discrete Gaussian (DG) model is demonstrated to be capable of providing an effective means of implementing change of support for Enterprise-style mineralisation and thus providing reliable global recoverable resource estimates. At Enterprise, sample grade distribution proves to be highly positively skewed, therefore significant deskewing of the histogram and reduction of variance occurs when going from sample to block support. The DG model was experimentally tested in'the Southern Primary Zone (SPZ) at Enterprise, where high anisotropy ratios and pronounced short range structures are observed in variograms. The experimental test was run for a change of support for which the variance reduction was. approximately 60 per cent. This reduction is similar to that predicted by Krige's Relationship ('the volume-variance relationship') for the practical situation of a change of support from 5 m vertical blasthole samples to 3 m x 8 m x 5 m selective mining unit (SMU) blocks. The DG model was found to correctly predict the grade tonnage relationships for a wide range of cut off grades. The experimental test indicated that, given a representative histogram and variogram, the DG change of support provides a computationally efficient and practical means of reliably assessing global mineable resources at the early stages of a mining project. Further, it allows a range of selectivity strategies to be meaningfully and comparatively considered prior to mining.

Mark Westfield, writing in The Australian on 16 May 1994 stated: The role of the independent expert is crucial to Australia's investment system. When it falls down, there can be very dramatic consequences. The scope of these consequences was dramatically illustrated in the decision of Rogers J. at first instance in Cambridge Credit Corporation v. Hutcheson (1983) 8 ACLR 123 when the auditors of the failed company were found liable for breach of contract and faced a damages award of $145 million, well in excess of their insurance cover. No comfort should be sought in the fact that this decision was overturned on appeal, for the result of the appeal rested on whether there had been a causal connection between the breach of contract which had occurred and the loss suffered, rather than on the fundamental principle of auditors' liability. Thus: Those who prepare experts' reports in company cases carry a heavy moral responsibility, whatever their legal duties may be... Unless high standards are observed by those who prepare these reports, there is a danger that systems established for the protection of the investing public will, in fact, operate to their detriment through reliance placed on those reports and on the reputations of those who furnish them. The Engel Model search simulator is described with particular emphasis on preparation of input parameters. The computer has a "black box" role in the same way a telephone or radio is a "black box" in communications. A search technique (sensor) is selected and applied in two stages of'search, namely, reconnaissance and detailed. The model relies on knowing and quantifying the parameters of the target sought and the search technique; this is usually done by analogy studies from available literature and experience. The parameters are then balanced by feasibility studies on the search area. Case histories show that the study makes the user aware of what he is likely to find rather than what he wants or needs to find to be viable. Two case histories are presented: one for Mississippi Valley type lead- zinc deposits and another for stratiform copper. The first study showed particular benefits in the input stage and highlighted the fact that one could expect a lot of encouragement by way of interesting results but with little chance of finding the high-grade,

There are a number of methods available for the determination of the fracture toughness of rock. Some of the most recognised methods include the hollow pressured cylinder, the short-rod, the chevron - edge-notched round bar in bending and the disc-shaped compact specimen. Most of these tests are difficult and expensive to conduct. In this paper the simple Brazilian testing of discs for tensile strength has been used to determine their fracture toughness. Tests were conducted on six different rock types and the values of the fracture toughness obtained for each type are in close agreement with the results of the well recognised the chevron edged types. Rosebery mine has had over 100 years of mining activity. The reserve has remained static for the last eight years with an expected mine life of six years. A move to rectify this was made in 1994 with the birth of the Deep Exploration Project (DEP). $45 M was committed to drill 100 km of underground exploration diamond drilling and develop 5.5 kin of decline aiming to add 9.5 Mt to the reserves and minimise lead time for development of P and K lenses discovered in the early-1990s. In 1996 this aim was expanded with the objective to build the resource base to 20 Mt by June 2000 allowing the mill to operate at 1.0 Mtpa (0.9 Mt from underground). Preliminary results of the project to-date are outlined and exploration diamond drilling techniques and strategies are described.

The study commenced in October 2012, to understand the basic ecology of the spotted-tailed quoll (Dasyurus maculatus) and to confirm whether the species utilise previously mined land on the Mt Owen mine site that was rehabilitated in 1996 to 2011, as part of their home range. The spotted-tailed quoll is a widely distributed marsupial carnivore that is listed as rare or threatened in every state in which it occurs. The species is a forest-dependent marsupial carnivore that occupies a wide range of habitat types (Long and Nelson, 2004).The first part of the study involved trapping a spotted-tailed quoll and fitting the individual with a combined global positioning system / ultra high frequency (GPS/UHF) radio-transmitter collar (Telemetry Solution – Quantum 4000E). The benefit of the GPS/UHF collar is that it records locations (or fixes) at intervals programmed by the user. The UHF component allows the researcher to locate the individual at a frequent interval, and the Quantum 4000E also has a remote download function, enabling the GPS data stored in the collar to be wirelessly transmitted between the collar and researcher. The benefit of this new technology is that the animal does not need to be repeatedly captured to retrieve the GPS data.Daytime searches are also undertaken using the UHF receiver to locate the individual and locations of daytime denning and latrine sites. The location of each den site is recorded using a hand-held GPS. Data downloaded from the GPS collar is then imported and mapped using computer software program ARCGIS (geographic information system), to overlay the data points onto aerial photography.Results demonstrate that threatened species will utilise rehabilitation areas post mining. The data presented will be used to develop a greater understanding of threatened species ecology in and around rehabilitated areas, which will assist in the planning and design of native forest rehabilitation areas.CITATION:York, P, 2014. The magnitude of the payloads carried by mine haul trucks can have a strong influence on the mine production rates and costs. Consequently control of truck payloads is highly desirable, but in many mines the unavailability of means for measuring payloads reliably, accurately and easily has resulted in a low level of control over truck payloads. Consideration is given to two techniques which are applicable to the measurement of payloads carried by mine haul trucks, namely truck weighing and direct measurement of payloads with truck based systems. Accuracy assessments for two types of truck weighing platforms and two prototype truck based direct payload measurement systems are provided. Results show that weighing platforms based on hydraulic components have proved inadequate, while strain gauge type weighing platforms can estimate payloads to within 2% of true payload when installed, maintained and used correctly. The assessment of the two prototype truck based direct payload measurement systems shows that a high proportion of payloads were estimated to within 5% of the payloads derived from accurate weighing platforms and that these systems appear to have the potential to provide convenient and accurate measurement of payloads. This should enable payloads to be much better controlled than has been possible to date. Predictions of the effect of payloads on production rates and some components of truck haulage costs are possible and some typical results are presented. Accurate prediction of the effect of payloads are not yet possible for some major components of truck haulage costs.

Most coal mines in Chongqing Area are highly gassy mines and liable to outburst of coal cnd methane. In order to harness mine environment and raise the Prodction capacity, methane predrainage is generally taken as a main preventive measure against outburst by all mines. In the recent ten years, the drainage volume per year has increased from 38.25 million m3 to mote than 100 million m3 with a volume over 12 m3 per tome of coal. In some mines, the draining rate is approaching to 50 percent, the rate in mining districts is up to 60 to 70 percent. The predrainage volume accounts for one fourth of total drainage volume. All these have effectively prevented the occurrence of coal and methane outbursts.This is the current situation of methane predrainage in coal mines in Chongqing area, the methods of predrainage to prevent outbursts and related parametres comprise:1. methods, technologies, supervision and effect of predrainage in different geological and mining conditions,2. the change of methane parametres pre-and post-drainage and the analysis of the effect of methane predrainage to prevent outbursts, and3. ways to improve the effect of methane predrainage.Thus the safety, reliability and production of Changqing Coal Mines will be enhanced.

A technique is presented for the integrated forward modelling of the three-dimensional structure and the geophysical response of multiply deformed terrains. This technique allows information collected by field geologists and geophysicist to be reconciled by the development of a simplified kinematic structural history of the area. The structural modelling simulates the deformation history of the area in terms of a succession of structural events, such as folds, shear zones and intrusions. The interaction of these events with a starting stratigraphy results in the prediction of the geometry of the structures. By specifying geophysical rock properties for the units in the initial stratigraphy predictions are possible for the potential field anomalies for gravity and magnetics. This approach is suited to a range of applications, and its uses in the modelling of regional structures, testing of geophysical data processing, volume balancing, multiply constrained inversion and training are discussed.

Ashton Mining Limited is currently one of the active companies undertaking gold exploration in Indonesia. Presently 7 Contract of Work areas are being explored for hard rock and alluvial gold. Hard rock exploration is focussed on the Tertiary volcanic arc terrains in which a variety of epithermal mineralisation styles have been identified. At the regional stage remote sensing techniques using Landsat, Spot and SLAR imagery where available, and photogeological studies are carried out in parallel with regional reconnaissance fieldwork programmes. These involve geological mapping and geochemical drainage sampling. Remote sensing techniques have proven useful in both the extrapolation of known geology and the identification of tectonically favourable settings as controls to mineralisation and volcanicity. The variety of mineralisation styles and settings is reflected in the highly variable geochemical signatures encountered. This has necessitated the refinement of sampling methods and sample preparation techniques for pan concentrate, stream sediment and soil samples in specific project areas. At the detailed prospect stage, mapping with particular attention to structural controls, wallrock alteration assemblages identified by petrog- raphy and XRD clay mineralogy, have proved useful in focussing drill targets. Drilling to date has utilised conventional diamond core drilling methods, the use of lightweight, man-portable "Winkie"-type rigs and hammer auger bedrock sampling systems. Geophysics methods successfully employed on various projects have included airborne magnetics and radiometrics, detailed ground magnetic surveys, VLF-EM and SIROTEM.

Due to the perceived potential to extract the second economic manganese seam at its Black Rock Operations in the Northern Cape Province, South Africa, Assmang commissioned an investigation with respect to mining method and sequencing of the two orebodies in 2007. Based on this initial study into multiseam potential, conditions and impacts, the rock engineering aspect was expanded to determine conceptual rules to govern the extraction of both manganese seams using the normal bord-and-pillar layout implemented at this operation. This work included the theoretical analysis using basic pillar design practices and numerical modelling, including the use of Map3D, UDEC and Phase2 codes.In 2013, Assmang launched a large-scale investigation into the potential to increase mine output from all possible manganese sources at the operation. Included in this investigation was the requirement to confirm or modify the conceptual multiseam extraction rules to implementation. As part of this confirmation process, stress measurements, borehole camera audits and additional numerical modelling were performed at a particular site on the operation where a limited extraction of both seams had been undertaken. The results obtained from this process provided confidence in the conceptual extraction rules and allowed the derivation of final extraction rules that will be implemented at the operation as the multiseam mining process becomes more widespread.CITATION:Hanekom, J W L, Roberts, M K C, Magwaza, M G, Lousteau, R and Piper, P, 2014. The cost of power is an important matter to mining companies generally and this thought that the members of the Australasian Institute of Mining Engineers, as well as the engineering and mining professions generally would be interested in any proposal for the reduction of that cost-has led to the presentation of this paper.The writer trusts that the description will be found clear and increase the interest in this exceedingly interesting subject. In the working up of the electrical arrangements touched on in this paper, the author has had the able assistance of hisfriend Mr. F. J. Mars, to whom he offers his hearty thanks. The selection of the best class of power plant for a mine is a very difficult and large problem and it is quite out of place to dogmatise that anyone of the many systems that offer isbetter than another, eg that the all electrical is better than the partly direct steam-driven and partly electrical, or that a gas plant is better than a steam plant.Such a selection is one that calls for very careful and close consideration, in each particular case, of a large number of regulating factors before it is possible to arrive at a proper decision.

The mining industry continues to have major disasters (Bingham Canyon, Pike River, Upper Big Branch, Mount Polley and Samarco), which often have a devastating effect on the enterprise, in terms of personnel deaths and injuries, environmental destruction, and financial and reputational loss. These disasters are not imposed from outside the business or organisation, they are almost always a function of loss of control of the management of the organisation’s critical assets and processes that they contain or to which they are exposed.Asset integrity is discussed as an effective response to business risks in order to mitigate, control and recover from loss scenarios that could expose a mining operation to significant property damage and business interruption, or even total loss. Vital to this process is the identification and control of risks to critical assets. Components of a critical asset assurance program are presented for discussion.Formal risk assessment has a longer history in industries other than mining, eg petrochemical, nuclear, military, aviation and space industries. Risk assessment is a structured, proactive approach to understanding and improving risks, as opposed to a reactive ‘fix-it-when-it-breaks’ mentality. Risk assessment techniques were triggered by major public disasters, such as the Flixborough chemical plant disaster (1973), Three Mile Island nuclear plant event (1979) and others.Today, most industries see risk assessment as an inherent part of their business, but do mining sites capture business risks that are related to major loss scenarios, which could have a significant impact on the operation?Does your risk assessment process:- involve a team having the right skill set so that the discussion is both stimulated and technically sound?- use generic assessment when a site-specific assessment is needed?- fail to consider all possible outcomes, including maximum foreseeable loss (MFL)?- fail to identify all hazards and controls associated with a particular activity?- fail to monitor controls effectively?This paper addresses the issues identified by these questions and provides some direction for developing a risk management process where business risk associated with critical asset integrity is integrated with other business and safety and health risk processes to provide a robust method for managing your business. Research conducted into backfill drainage at Mount Isa Mines since 1992 is described. Piping in draining backfilled scopes has been the primary cause of bulkhead failures and emphasis is placed on research into the piping mechanism. Laboratory and in situ tests aimed at understanding the piping mechanism have been conducted and the results are presented. A case history of piping in a draining bench scope fill mass is described and a technique for reducing the potential for bulkhead failures in hench stopes is presented. Hydraulic fill is produced by standard cycloning of tailings and the overflow (reject material) is sent to thickeners prior to placement in the tailings dams. Research into the partial introduction of thickener underflow into the backfill system and its influence on backfill drainage is also descrihed.

This paper explores the importance of operators in the overall efficiency of mineral processing plants. With the potential of future control configurations becoming more remote, it is time to review the implementation of control and utilisation of operators. This paper is based on a preliminary review of operators and control room operations and clearly shows that, in the minerals industry, operations are typically run in a reactive mode (with a focus on ensuring equipment operation), rather than in a proactive mode (with a focus on optimising the process performance). The primary reason for this misguided approach is the short sighted thinking applied to the challenges of designing technology and organisational tools capable of addressing the essential operational needs: an approach which inevitably results in a disconnect between people and technology. Contrary to the popular approach of replacing operators with expert systems, the thesis of this paper is that the shift to more complex circuits, with higher demands on processing capability and control, will require the actual upskilling of operators. Experience in mineral processing and other industries indicates that expert systems cope well with small changes but are typically unable to respond to major changes in feed material and this is where the expert operator becomes crucial. Providing operators with ongoing high level training in process understanding, and restructuring how they interact with the plant and interface with the control system is the approach being proposed here - an approach surprisingly underutilised and often absent in the minerals industry today.CITATION:Li, X, Powell, M S and McKeague, W, 2012. Efficient project planning during the detailed feasibility to final engineering stages of a project requires not only the accurate prediction of the grade, tonnes and recovery, but their degree of variability as well. An understanding of the major parameters involved in the grade and tonnage estimates is essential, and the communication to those receiving the results is most important. The personnel involved in the project require more than just a global reserves classification. Quality parameters other than grade should be evaluated as carefully as the estimate itself. This paper does not present any novel ideas to overcome or enhance any of this. Rather, it takes a step back and tries to look at the global picture of requirements for proper project planning.

This is the time of year tor the presidential address, and with the present incumbent engaged in the coal mining industry, it will therefore come as no surprise to you that the theme of my address this evening is concerned with coal.There are other reasons for this apart from my contact with the coal industry. At present, coal is supplying considerable overseas revenue at a time when the remainder of the mining market is in a somewhat depressed state. That times will change goes without saying, if history is to be believed.However, so far so good for coal. My first reaction when The Institute indicated its wish that I be president for 1976 was to become deeply conscious of the honour bestowed on me.On consideration, I realized that very few past presidents have been intimately connected with the coal mining industry to the extent of indulging in it for lengthy periods as a full time occupation or, conversely, a part time interest for a long time. It also appears that not one had started their career in the industry. In my case, 'also, there were 8 very interesting years ,as a gold miner and metallurgist before commencing in coal.It therefore seemed appropriate to endeavour to discover ,why this should be so, as coal mining is now a very important part of a very important industry. What were the reasons why the industry took so long to emerge when there were ample reserves of easily accessible coal?Frankie and Johnnie in their bar room epic of the depression years concluded, and I paraphrase, that "their story held no moral, their story told no tale". If my story has such a message, it could perhapsbe construed as reinforcing the oft-repeated dictums, true or false, that "history repeats itself" or "man never learns".Coal mining is by far our oldest major Australian industry except for agriculture. The statistical nature of the variability in detonation times of pyrotechnic delays is discussed, and how to evaluate the probability of required detonation intervals is shown. Some methods (analytical and stochastic) are given for designing blasts to ensure that any adverse effects on the variability in the delays is taken into account and minimised. Using computer models of blasts, detonation simulations can be used to check the initiation sequence for the probability of sequence reversals, indicating areas of high blast damage potential. Charge consumption rates, which relate directly to the resulting vibration levels, can be examined for their susceptibility to variation from delay variability. Models that synthesize vibration waveforms for production blasts, when taking delay variability into account, indicate the difficulty in vibration level prediction.

The power station went into operation in 1931, when the installed capacity was 12,500 kVA. with a loading of 4,000 kVA. In 1936 the loading increased to 6,750 kVA. which necessitated the addition of a third set which went into operation in 1937, the installed capacity at that date being 18,750 kvA. with a loading of 7,000 kVA. This remained fairly constant until 1945, when a gradual increase was noticed, the loading in 1952 being 10,598 kVA.With the addition of the copper plant, additional generating capacity was required and it was decided to raise the installed capacity by the addition of a fourth set to 34,375 kVA. with an expected loading, when producing copper, of 20,000 kViA.MAIN POWER PLANTThis consists of three GiE.e. alternators of 6,250 kVA. or 5,000 kW. at 0.8 P.F. rating and one G.E.C. alternator of 15,625 kVA. or 12,500 kW. at 0.8 P.F. rating, making a total generating capacity of 34,375 kVA.Each alternator is driven by Fraser and Chalmers turbines at 3,000 r.p.m.SYSTEMThe main 3 phase 3 wire 3,300 volt distribution system has the neutral point of alternators earthed through by one or two earthing resistors designed to limit earth fault current to 3,000 amp. for 20 seconds, in the case of the large machine, and to 1,100 amp. for 10 seconds, in the case of the smaller machines, or full load of either size machine at rated voltage.
