Earlier work revealed that small amounts of silver (< 0,l at. pct) may exert a marked effect on the structure and aging characteristics of certain a1loys based on the Al-Zn-Mg system. Silver additions have now been made to other age-hardening aluminum alloys, and significant effects have been observed in the Al-Mg system and in several Al-Cu-Mg and Al-Mg-Si alloys. Similarities exist between the behavior of alloys from all four systems, notably that in each case silver stimulates nucleation of an intermediate precipitate which forms when the alloys are aged in the medium temperature range (-120" to 220°C). There is evidence to indicate that the effects of silver are unique to that element. The Smelting and Refining Department of Cerro de Pasco Corporation is located at La Oroya at an altitude of 3,720 meters (12,205 feet) in the Peruvian Andes. Producing lead, zinc and copper as well as twelve by-product metals and chemicals, the smelter is among the world&apos;s most complex. With the intake of high-bismuth ores in 1934, electrolytic lead refining by a modified Betts process was piloted and the plant went into commercial production in 1937 at a nominal capacity of 100 M.T. per day. After expansions in 1950 and 1963, nominal capacity has increased to 250 M.T. per day. Anodes spaced at 10.8 cm centre to centre and starting sheets are both set into the cells by overhead cranes. The asphalt-lined concrete cells are arranged in a Walker side-by-side configuration, and the electrolyte, circulating at 13 l/min./cell, is a solution of locally-produced hydrofluosilicic acid and lead fluosilicate. The corrosion cycle is limited to four days due to high impurity content of the bullion, which has successfully been treated at contents of up to 9% impurities. The cathodes are melted, drossed, and cast into blocks and pigs assaying 99.997 + % lead. The anodes with the blanket of slime adhering, are washed with electrolyte and condensate makeup water to remove the concentrated lead fluosilicate entrapped in the slimes. The slimes are then removed with high-pressure water sprays, centrifuged and sent to another plant for recovery of silver, gold, bismuth, selenium, tellurium, and antimony.

INTRODUCTION Activated charcoal has been used for several centuries in many capacities including the recovery, isolation and purification of various materials (1). The first use of charcoal in a gold metallurgical system was in the extraction of gold after chlorination (2, 3,4). The gold was dissolved in a chlorine system and subsequently filtered through charcoal. The application of charcoal with cyanide extraction was patented by Johnston (5) in 1894 and adopted commercially in Australia in 1897. The process consisted of dissolving the gold and silver in a potassium cyanide solution and passing it through a series of charcoal filters. The charcoal was subsequently smelted to recover the gold and silver. The interest in the use of charcoal diminished in the first part of the twentieth century as the practice of the use of zinc as a precipitating agent increased. However, in 1916, the Yuanmi Mine in Australia replaced their zinc precipitation plant with a charcoal adsorption plant. In 1926, Scott and Gross (7) of the U. S. Bureau of Mines con- ducted extensive research on the adsorption of gold and silver from cyanide leach solutions. Among their findings was the result that the most important factor in improving the adsorptive power of charcoal was heat treatment with oxidation by air or steam. The work of Zadra (8) in 1952 stimulated renewed interest in the use of activated charcoal in gold and silver recovery with the development of a method of recovery of the gold and silver from the charcoal other than its destruction by burning. IT has been reported frequently that the hardness and strength vary over the cross section of cold-worked, particularly cold-drawn, material. Brass rod and wire usually have been found to possess a maximum strength and hardness near the surface.1,2 According to Sachs,&apos; the center fiber has about the same strength as a wire stretched by the same amount in a tensile-test machine, the strength increasing toward the surface (Fig. I). These differences are particularly large for wire given a small reduction on drawing through a die with a wide opening. However, with increasing reduction and hardness, a tendency to form a thin soft surface skin becomes apparent. On the contrary, copper wire has usually been found to possess a soft surface skin3-5 and it has been reported by Harris3 that during the cold-drawing of hot-rolled wire the surface layer becomes increasingly softer than the core, while the layer of maximum strength moves toward the core, it being found near the surface at first. The increase of strength and hardness from the core to the skin is readily explained by the observation that, in addition to the stretching, the layers of a rod or wire are sheared more the closer they are to the surface.1,6-8 However, the presence of a soft surface layer can be attributed only to an annealing effect. First actual production of titanium metal at the newly constructed Henderson, Nev., plant of Titanium Metals Corp. of America occurred in mid-October. Production will be expanded rapidly until the initial goal of 10-tons per day is reached. This will be equivalent to eight times the present world production of titanium metal. W. Eberstady & Co., New York City, has announced plans for construction of a $400 million plant for the manufacture of synthetic liquid fuels from coal in southern Illinois, if the Government will guarantee a minimum price for the gasoline and other products to be produced.

AT a recent meeting of the Utah Section. A.I.M.E., P. D. Nielson, general plant superintendent of the new Geneva steel plant at Provo, Utah, spoke on "General Operations of the Geneva Plant." Mr. Nielson explained that the plant was located at Provo, Utah, on account of railroad facilities, the proximity of coal, iron, and limestone, and the nearness of water for operating the plant. Water probably was the most important item in making the decision.

MACHINE mining on the pitch plays an important part in the produc-tion schedule at the Salem Hill Colliery of the Haddock Mining Co. This mine is just outside the city of Pottsville, in Schuylkill County, along the southern border of the Anthracite Region. The entrance to the mine is through a cross-measure tunnel 15 ft. above water level and running north 1500 ft. until it strikes the Rabbit Hole vein, where the machine mining is carried on. The main slope, dipping south, was sunk 1200 ft. in the Rabbit Hole vein with levels turned off at 300-ft. intervals. The vein is from 24 to 30 in. thick on a varying pitch of 20° to 40°. The overburden has differed from 50 to 466 ft., the most recent work having the maximum overburden. Immediately over the Rabbit Hole vein is a seam of soft sand slate from 1 to 4 ft. thick which presents a problem at times because it dis-integrates rapidly when exposed to the air. It will crack up and fall without any audible warning, therefore the workmen must always be on the alert, watching for loose slabs. The main top is sandstone, vary-ing in thickness from 8 to 20 ft. The bottom rock is similar to the top, but is finer grained and subject to a more complete disintegration. The vein has a 3 to 4-in. shelly band along the bottom, and all under-cutting has been done in this soft band.

THE object of this article is to point out the experimental relationship which exists among contact angle, adsorption density, zeta potential, and flotation rate data. In each of the experiments discussed in this article, the surface properties of quartz, as a function of pH, were measured in solutions to which constant quantities of dodecylam-monium acetate were added. Morrow1 and deBruyn2 worked with solutions containing 4.08x10-5 moles per liter, whereas Fuerstenau3 and Seele worked with solutions containing exactly 4x105 moles per liter, but this difference is not significant. The pH of the solutions was regulated with HCI or NaOH in all cases. In each case, the addition of collector was constant, but the concentration of dodecylammonium ions decreased because of the formation of dodecylamine at higher pH values.2 Contact Angles: Gaudin and Morrow1 presented data for the contact angle of quartz in solutions containing 4.08x10-5 moles of dodecylammonium acetate per liter between pH 2 and pH 10.15. Using the same captive bubble techniques, the writer measured contact angles on quartz in solutions containing 4x105 moles of dodecylammonium acetate per liter at pH values ranging from 9.9 to 13.2. INTERMETALLIC compounds are formed in many binary metal systems. Some compounds are stable to their melting points, and others decompose at lower transition temperatures. Even those of the first class are dis-sociated in the liquid state, as indicated by the continuous for in of their solubility curves at their melting points1. While the lattice structures of some of these compounds have been determined, their thermodynamic properties have not been investigated. In this paper is described the determination of the free energy and heat of formation of the compound CdSb, which is of the first class mentioned above, melting congruently at 455° C. This compound shows a rhombic structure, and the lengths of the edges of the elementary cell containing four molecules are: a =6.52, b = 8.60, c = 4.16 A.2 There are three possible methods of determining the free energy of formation of a compound of this type. The first method, applying the third law of thermodynamics, requires the measurement of its heat capacity preferably to liquid hydrogen temperatures, and a calorimetric determination of its heat of formation. The second method involves the study of the equilibrium of the compound in some gas reaction, such as: CdSb + CO2 = CdO + CO + Sb From the known free energies of formation of CdO, CO2 and CO the free energy of formation of CdSb could be calculated. No new oil fields were discovered in Brazil during 1945. Production for the year reached a total of 79.329 bbl., all coming from the four fields in the Baia basin; the Lobato-Joanes field produced 6728 bbl.; Aratu, 6717 bbl.; Candeias, 36,663 bbl. and Itaparica, 29,211 bbl. The total cumulative production from the Baia basin from 1939 to 1945 inclusive amounts to 210,000 bbl., all of which is utilized locally.

THERE has been a running discussion over the-past several years with respect to the life and adequacy of our natural gas reserves.. Some of the experts agree on one phase of the subject at least--that eventually it will be necessary to augment deliveries of natural gas in the northern markets by the development of a more or less comparable synthetic gas made from coal. The purpose of this paper is to point out: 1. It may be later than a good many people think-the demand for additional domestic and commercial pipeline gas in at least one section of the North will probably be felt rather keenly before an adequate synthetic pipeline-gas project, developed on economic lines, could be completed, even if &apos; initiated in the near future. 2. The evidence is considerable that such a project would be technically sound and economically self-supporting, although the margin of profit at first might be so small and the magnitude of an economic enterprise so great that financing would be impossible without Government aid in some form or other. The part of the country referred to is the heavily populated section in the northeast of the United States. To simplify an examination of the situation, let us take the potential marketing areas within range to the north and east of the three pipelines: 1. Tennessee Gas Transmission Co. as it enters Erie County, New York state. 2. Texas Eastern Transmission Corporation just before the tap that supplies the general Philadelphia area. 3. Transcontinental G& Pipe Line Corporation as it enters the state of New Jersey The sources of gas for these three pipelines are in Texas and Louisiana. The ultimate maximum combined capacity of the three lines at the points stated is approximately 1,200,000,000 cu ft per 24 hr at the maximum load factor probable of attainment in normal operation. The areas supplied by the three lines north and east of the points stated, or assumed as eventual markets, are: 1. Central New York state, from Buffalo to Albany (both inclusive).

Water supplies dependent upon induced infiltration can be developed by vertical wells, by infiltration galleries, or by horizontal water collectors. Each method is described and the advantages of water obtained by induced infiltration with respect to cost, chemical quality, and temperature are shown by specific water supplies. THE subject of ground water in industry is assuming increasing importance as new processes and new industries are developed. Industrial specifications of chemical quality and temperature for process water and for cooling purposes are becoming more rigid, and water must now have many properties to meet these requirements. As ground water is usually more constant in quality and temperature, many industries are turning to ground-water supplies to satisfy their growing need. As many published articles have stated during the past several years, the ever increasing demands have caused shortages of water supply in many localities throughout the United States. Although such shortages are generally of a local nature, they have given rise to many attendant problems, such as increased pumping costs, salt water encroachment, and rising ground-water temperatures. One partial solution to the problems of overdevelopment of the ground-water reservoirs in many areas can be accomplished by developing ground-water supplies that are dependent upon induced infiltration and by planning the use of underground reservoirs. These reservoirs can be filled during periods of excess precipitation and stream flow and can be emptied during periods of drought, in a manner similar to the use of surface reservoirs. In this way water that otherwise would be wasted into the oceans is salvaged during periods of excess. The development of water supplies dependent on induced infiltration is a relatively new concept and should be defined. When a well is pumped, the water level around the well is lowered in the shape of an inverted cone or cone of depression. As pumping is continued, the cone of depression will continue to expand, horizontally and vertically, until the quantity of water crossing the perimeter of the cone plus the recharge within the area of the cone is equal to the quantity of water being pumped.

The purpose of the Auxiliary is to build for all time and it therefore wishes to lay its foundations securely, feeling that the true understanding and adoption of the ideals of Americanism are the safeguards of our country from the perils of anarchy, and the bond of union between labor, brains, and capital. We hope to have reports from several directors to print next month and here append the report of the Director for the New York Section, Mrs. W. Y. Westervelt.

The subject is one that is worth a great deal of thought and research at this time. It is a well-known fact that the strong affinity of steel or, iron for oxygen is perhaps the main detriment to sound production, and, as the author states, it is-indeed remarkable that today there are no analytical methods in general use in steel works for determining the gaseous con-stituents of steel.

The wetiability of single crystals of MgO by specimens of vacuum-cast iron was studied using the sessile drop technique in vacuo at 1550ºC. Formation of FeO at the liquid-vapor interface caused the contact angle (6) to decrease from 117 to 65 deg during the first minute. After cooling, all specimens possessed a peculiar annular interfacial deposit of Fe,O,. Within the annulus the interface showed no sign of chemical attack. Chemical reaction occurred where the iron was alloyed with Ti, V, Cr, Nb(Cb), Ta, cmd Zr. Vnriation of 6 with alloy concentration was studied. Although vanadium md chromium improved the wettability of MgO by iron, the effect of Zr, Ti, Nb, and Ta was indeterminable because the 8 derived from sessile drop considerations was that of the metal against a restrictive peripheral volume of liquid oxide wetting the substrate. INTEREST in the nature of metal-ceramic interactions has been stimulated by progressive development of metal-ceramic combinations. One of the more valuable methods used for bond investigation is the sessile drop technique. Recent attempts to improve wettability through solute additions to the drop have revealed that the solute may a) react with the oxide creating new compounds at the solid-liquid interface, b) adsorb at the interface in a monolayer formation, or c) distribute throughout the drop uniformly causing no wettability variation. This work, part m in a series1,2 of investigations of interface reactions between metals and ceramics, embraces a study of the Fe-MgO system. MgO possesses a large negative free energy of formation (-173 kcal per g mole 0, at 1550ºC) compared to FeO at this temperature (-73 kcal per g mole 02). Hence the electronegativity difference between the drop and substrate allows selection from an extensive group of metal solutes with intermediate electronegativity differences that would, in the absence of chemical reactions, be expected to adsorb pre- ferentially at the solid-liquid interface. However, the high oxygen pressure of MgO in vacuo creates an oxidation environment which influences the solute behavior. Recent studies of the Fe-MgO systemJ74 have been restricted by chemical reactions that obscured observations. In view of the current interest in liquid-phase sintering of metal-ceramic combinations under partial oxidizing conditions,5 a more comprehensive study of the Fe-MgO system seemed beneficial. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE 1) Specimen Preparation. Optical-grade MgO single crystals and Ferrovac vacuum-cast iron were used in all experiments. A spectrographic analysis of the iron indicated 0.008 C, 0.05 V, 0.005 Mo, 0.01 Ti, 0.002 S, 0.01 Cr, 0.001 Mg, 0.01 Si, 0.003 A1 (wt pct). The MgO crystals were cleaved along (100) planes into plates approximately 20 by 20 by 1 mm. Following annealing in vactto at 1100°C for 3 hr, surface irregularities were removed by a chemical etch in phosphoric acid at 100°C. The iron rod was machined into small cylinders approximately 0.250 in. in diam and length and these were carefully cleaned in organic and acidic solutions to remove surface impurities. All specimens were weighed to the nearest 0.1 mg. 2) Apparatus. The apparatus described in detail by previous authors1,2 was modified for this work. A Polaroid Land Camera was incorporated into the optical system so that drop measurements at ten-second intervals after melting were possible with ultra-high-speed self-develop ing film. 3) Procedure. The iron cylinders were placed upright on the MgO plates and positioned in the molybdenum susceptor. After furnace assembly the system was pumped down to a vacuum of 1 µ and flushed with H2 at 800°C. The system was again evacuated to 5 x 10-5 mm of mercury and the temperature raised to 1550°C within 2 min. The molten drops were photographed at appropriate time intervals. TWO min after melting the iron vapor pressure caused gas discharge, or corona, within the tube. The specimens were then slowly cooled to room temperature, sectioned and examined metallographi-cally.
