Recent developments in the application of solvent extraction in hydrometallurgical processing make it desirable to reassess the present state of availability of suitable equipment for these applications. The range of solvent extraction applications now includes very large scale applications with a modest demand on separation performance (the treatment of some base metals) and applications in which the decisive factor is a very high requirement on separation performance. The extraction column to be described in the present paper is of the type in which mechanical energy is provided for the two- liquid system inside the column. The active elements for this are reciprocating sieve plates designed and mounted so as to uniformly load the driving mechanism, to eliminate vibration of the plant, to have sufficient control over the degree of dispersion of the dispersed phase, and to reduce axial mixing effects, which are highly detrimental to the separation performance of production-scale plant. The operating features of the reciprocating-plate column will be illustrated mainly by experimental results obtained on a 4" diameter column in the extraction of uranyl nitrate with TBP. Some mechanical features of the operation of reciprocating-plate columns will also be discussed.

Both centrifugal and reciprocating-type pumps have been widely used in the transport of slurries. Although with some limitations, centrifugal pumps may be used, especially for short-haul systems, however, for the long pipelines the reciprocating pumps are better suited. A state-of-the-art review is presented in which a discussion of applications is made and some of the problems associated with meeting the proper design conditions for satisfactory service are discussed. Several developments underway give considerable promise of better pumps in the future, although the current level of development provides for an economical means to move slurries. The movement of liquids in pipelines necessarily occasions the use of pumps. The petroleum industry is familiar with the transport of solids through mud pumps and cementing and fracturing pumps where the movement of slurries is an everyday matter. In the drilling of an oil well, the circulating fluid utilized to remove drill cuttings is called drilling mud. This substance is usually a fairly sophisticated material designed to develop certain characteristics desirable in the drilling process. The cuttings are suspended in a moving column of this fluid and brought to the surface. The separation of the cuttings from the drilling fluids is accomplished by the use of shaker screens and settling pits; however, it is impractical to remove the cuttings completely and as a result they are pumped through the mud pumps back into the circulating stream. Over the years, mud pumps have been improved so that rather long life can be obtained from liquid end parts subject to the attritional effects of the abrasive-laden fluid. It is from this background that reciprocating-type slurry pumps have been developed. Centrifugal Pumps Centrifugal pumps have also been used to transport solids, where low heads are required, typically up to 200 ft or so, and for short hauls. The centrifugal pump is a hydrokinetic device wherein the increase in velocity of a fluid stream is converted to head, and to achieve high heads a large change in velocity is necessary. Abrasive laden fluids cause wear on impellers and casings as a result of erosion by the fluid and the suspended particles. Centrifugal pumps, therefore, can only be used where the internal velocity of flow is rela- tively low. The advantage of centrifugal pumps is their high capacity at relatively low capital cost and usually relatively small space requirement. One of the disadvantages of the centrifugal pump when used in slurry pipelining can be seen in its typical pressure-volume performance relationship, which tends to work against the application (see Fig. I). If an increase in pressure (head) is occasioned by flow restrictions in the pipeline, say by the dropping out of solids, a desirable characteristic of a slurry pump would be that it develop increased pressure to overcome the restriction. The centrifugal pump provides the increased pressure only at the expense of considerably reduced volume which then results in a lower flow velocity. With the reduced flow rate, adequate velocity to hold the material in suspension and keep it flowing in the line might not be achieved. If centrifugal pumps are considerd for the movement of solids in a long line, a series of pumps must be staged in order to provide the necessary motivating force. THE Eötvös torsion balance permits the measurement of certain second derivatives of the gravity-potential, which are known as the gradients of gravity and the curvature values for an equipotential plane of gravity. These quantities are influenced on level ground by the configuration of the masses underneath. Hence, the torsion balance has gained great importance for the location of geological structures and thus indirectly for the discovery of oil and other mineral deposits. If the ground is not level, however, the measurements become more difficult, because the superficial mass-irregularities also produce more or less considerable disturbances. It is necessary, therefore, to determine the shape of the surrounding topography by leveling as well as by consulting topographic maps and to compute its influence upon the torsion balance. The correction thus determined is called, in general, the topographic correction; it is composed of two constituents, the terrain correction and the cartographic correction. The terrain correction would be that part of the topographic correction as derived from the direct leveling of the area surrounding the station; whereas the data for the computation of the cartographic correction are obtained from a topographic map, usually beginning with a radius of 100 meters, as under most circumstances it is difficult to level along a larger concentric circle about the station.

A process has been developed for leaching copper, lead and calcium from molybdenite concentrate. The leachant is a solution containing an oxidizing chloride (e. g., CuC12, FeC13) and an alkaline earth metal chloride (e. g., CaC12). Cupric chloride and ferric chloride, in the presence of 20-30% calcium chloride, are effective oxidants for chalcopyrite and galena. Calcium chloride, in addition to promoting the rate of leaching, serves to lower the solution pH and raise the boiling point. Leaching for two hours at 110'~ with a 1 % CuC12-10% FeC13- 30% CaC12 solution results in the extraction of up to 98% of the copper in molybdenite, 98% of the lead, and 79% of the calcium. Less than 0. 5% of the molybdenum is dissolved. The leach solution can be rapidly and effectively regenerated with gaseous chlorine and recycled. Build-up of copper and lead in the leach solution is controlled by discarding about 30% of the leach solution each cycle.

A commercially available microprocessor-based system capable of monitoring 512 channels has been interfaced with monitors for radon, working level, air velocity, and fan power. The basic system utilizes both 280 and 8080 microprocessors in a desktop central processing unit (CPU). CPU hardware includes keyboard, video display (CRT), and disk drive; a printer is used to keep permanent data records. Signals from all channels are transmitted to the computer in digital form where they are processed for alarm status. Software developed for the system allows for audiovisual alarms in the event of low and high readings, rate change, change of state, or communica- tion failure. Up to six channels can be continuously displayed on the CRT for current readings. Shift reports and trend logs may be generated to help the ventilation engineer determine average working levels and ventilation effectiveness. Additional software permits the operator to program command sequences which may be used to automatically restart fans after a power outage.

Coal mining in the State of Washington offers many interesting problems for the mining engineer, due to the varied physical conditions occurring in different fields, and often in, the same mine. The different coal seams worked in the same mine commonly require different mining and transportation methods for economical operation. The coal measures have inclinations ranging from 5° to vertical, and in the same mine the dip of the coal may vary from 30° to 50°. In all fields, the seams are extensively faulted, folded, and sheared. The quality of the coal produced ranges from brown lignite to bituminous- coking coal, the following being typical analyses: Lignite Sub Coking Coal bituminous Moisture 23.5 14.30 0.57 Volatile hydrocarbon 31.0 33.03 23.57 Fixed carbon 37.4 41.30 65.55 Ash 8.1 11.37 10.31 100.0. 100.00 100.00 Very little of the coal contains as much as 0.75 per cent. sulphur. The brown lignites occur mostly in Lewis and Thurston Counties, and, as a rule are very cheaply mined. This coal has been successfully used in locomotives of the Oregon & Washington Railroad, after equipping them with specially designed fireboxes. The sub-bituminous coals occur in all the coal-mining counties. Their cost of production varies widely, according to the character of the formations, the pitch, and the wall conditions. This makes a fairly good steam coal, but the lump is used mostly for domestic trade, after grading into lump, nut, and pea.

The molybdenite flotation operation of Climax Molybdenum Co., Division of AMAX Inc., near Leadville, Colo., generates a rougher tailing containing 0.03% W03 and 0.005% SnO2. This tailing is subjected to a series of mineral beneficiation steps for production of wolframite and cassiterite concentrates. However, these byproducts are contaminated by small quantities of UsOa. This paper describes application of sulfuric acid-sodium chlorate leaching for substantial elimination of the radioactive impurities, particularly the mineral brannerite. The leached residue is amenable to magnetic separation of wolframite from cassiterite.

Some years ago, the writer described heat checks or thermal cracks that occur in die-casting dies.' The life of dies was considered in relation to. the casting temperature, the material used for the die and the heat to be absorbed by the die per unit volume of casting made. The mechanism of the action that results in thermal failure of dies was described. In the present paper the writer proposes to describe some additional observations in regard to heat checking, make one or two suggestions as to the method or methods for further attack of the problem, and give the results obtained on some work carried out along these lines. Importance of Heat Checking Heat checks in steel are the source of trouble in many industries besides that of die casting. Every shop where metals are subjected to hot working is searching for improvement and hoping for a cure. The development of a material of sufficient strength to be used as a die and yet devoid of the property of heat checking would be a godsend to many shops and many industries. The need for thorough study and research on the subject is evidenced by the wide variety of hot-working die steels on the market. It is peculiar, but true, that in practically every case the maker of the steel can give concrete evidence to prove his contention that his type of hot-working die steel is as good as or better than any other. A number of steel companies have several hot-working die steels from which choice can be made to fit a particular set of requirements. Possibly to expect one material to be universally the best hot-working die steel is unreasonable. In some hot-working operations, as in drop forging, the die must have great toughness to withstand the stresses developed; in other operations, as in hot piercing or punching, resistance to erosion at high temperatures, possibly defined as strength and hardness at elevated temperatures, is required. In still others, as in die casting, only sufficient hardness to resist scoring between moving surfaces is required, whereas the resistance to sudden changes in temperature must be at a maximum.

The tremendous interest in development of surface- mineable coal throughout the western US will bring with it a requirement for many manhours spent in mine planning and equipment selection. One problem in particular that engineers face during the planning stage is that of selecting a dragline with the proper reach capability. Reach, expressed in terms of operating radius and effective spoil radius, can be a major problem when mining deeper than originally planned, and aside from production requirements, the ability of a particular dragline to spoil across a strip is essential. Determination of dragline reach needed for a multiple-seam western coal operation can be simplified by use of an equation derived below that eliminates the need for tedious and repetitive calculations.

J. C. WRIGHT.-The problem of organizing and maintaining a vocational class for those employees who are engaged in the mining industry depends on several most important factors. The first is the sympathetic cooperation of employer and employee; the second is to find the subject matter that must be presented to these men; and the third is to find the instructor who can present that subject matter. This is perhaps the most difficult, for we usually find a man who knows the material that is to be presented but is not a teacher or does not know how to organize his material. The man must know the subject matter from the standpoint of absolute contact with industry in order to be a successful teacher. I have come into contact with two kinds of schools organized in connection with mining occupations. In one type the instruction leans very largely toward elementary subjects, arithmetic, reading and writing and spelling; it is not of such a character as to help or improve the working man in his occupation in the sense that we are attempting when we speak of vocational education. In the other type of school, an engineer is usually employed as a teacher. He immediately begins to give the things with which he is most familiar and the instruction becomes such as only those who possess a high-school or college education, perhaps, are able to receive. In between these two schools is the school we are trying to, promote, a school that will meet the needs of those employed. MARGUERITE W. This vocational education can do; for it can supply many of those deficiencies in upbringing and. environment that make for the discontent and restlessness of our varied classes of unskilled labor: the Anglo-Saxon mountaineer; the Southern negroes who have crossed Mason & Dixon's line by the thousands, "searching satisfaction for our minds;" and the still greater number who have sought across the sea America, "the promised land.

Durhm has a well earned reputation for supplying some of the finest coking caals in the world. The caals, in general, vary in rank from 301 to 501/2. Durham has traditionally produced foundry coke for the major proportion of the foundries in Great Britah. Durham coals can be described as clean, soft coals, which yielded, with the old hand methods of coal getting, low ash small coal because the extraneous shale was normally harder than the coal and occurred in larger pieces. Under these conditions, with a plentiful supply of cheap labor, it used to be sufficient, at most collieries, to hand clean the large sizes of coal which could then be remixed with the untreated small coal to produce carbonization coals, ready for the coke ovens, at under 5 pct ash. With the introduction of mechanical methods of coal mining, the coal gradually required more cleaning. The first method adopted to resolve this problem was the introduction of pneumatic dry cleaners for the small coal. Although such machines had little effect on the fine coal (say below 1/8 in.), they could clean the intermediate sizes of coal. This, coupled with hand cleaning the larger sizes above 1-1/2or 2 in., resulted in a combined run-of-mine mixture below 6 pct ash, capable of maintaining the quality and reputation of the cokes produced. In more recent years, the intensification of mechanization and power loading, coupled with gradual exhaustion of the cleaner seams, has created the need for a more complete method of coal cleaning. This particularly applies in the fine sizes (say below 1/50 in.) which normally vary, under present day conditions, between 15 and 35 pct ash and are much too dirty to be included in the raw state in a carbonization mixture. This pronounced change has been accelerated because legislation controlling the dust conditions of mine airs for the prevention of pneumoconiosis has resulted in tk~e extensive use of water underground and a consequent increase in moisture content of the run-of-milie output. The presence of damp fine coal decreast the efficiency of prescreening and dry cleaners, so that this type of preparation for low ash coking coals is decreasing, although it is still used satisfactorily for industrial coals in the medium ash range. Table I shows the gradual increase in mechanization, the reduction in manpower, the increased use of explosives per ton of coal extraction, and the increase in the proportion of coal cleaned by mechanical means in Great Britain. Although similar figures are not available for Durham Div. until after the date of nationalization of the coal industry, it is probable that the increase in mechanical cleaning, particularly by dry cleaners, was more marked in the Durham collieries than elsewhere in the country. As dry clealiers were replaced by coal washeries in the Gritish ccal industry, no special attempts were made to recover the slurry, with the result that large outflows of dirty water were allowed, deposits of slurry came in to lagoons and neighboring streams, and a proportion of fine material was lost from the coking coal. This position, coupled with the higher moisture of the washed coking coal, resulted in adverse effects on coke oven throughputs and coke quality. It is now realized that the natural coal fines are an essential ingredient of coking coals in obtaining the correct coke structure in metallurgical cokes. This, together with economic pressure, led to the introduction of flocculation and filtration plants for the recovery of slurries, and later, when the ash contelits of the filter cakes were too high, to the introduction of froth flotation equipment. After this position had been reached, the tailings from the froth flotation pIants were, in many cases, still allowed to constitute an undesirable effluent. Recent legislation on river pollution has changed this picture; it is now necessary to provide a circuit which is completely closed so far as solids are concerned. The gradual increase in the coal cleaned by wet methods and froth flotation in Durham Div, is shown in Table 11. It is now an accepted feature of new Washeries that. froth flotation should be an integral part of the washing process from the initial installation of the plant.

Many firms in the minerals industry are facing enormous capital-equipment requirements for existing operations, planned expansion programs, pollution control systems, etc. Yet, because of existing economic conditions, mining companies find it increasingly difficult to obtain reasonable financing for the acquisition of large, high-cost capital equipment. One way of obtaining the use of mining and other major pieces of high-cost capital equipment is through leasing. The popularity of this approach is evidenced by the growing number of leasing companies, equipment manufacturers, and financial institutions now offering this service to their customers. Indeed, leasing has become a billion-dollar industry, and many commercial banks have developed sizeable portfolios in this area. "Should we buy or lease?" This question eventually comes up whenever a mining company needs additional major capital assets. SUFFICIENT testing has been performed with the Dutch State Mines Cyclone for thickening and desliming flotation feed at the concentrator of the National Lead Co., Tahawus, N. Y., to prove its application for this work. It is the purpose of this article to present some of the test results, operational details and advantages of cyclone thickening and classification. The metallurgy of the mill operation was described by Frank R. Milliken, assistant manager of the titanium division.l The present flowsheet for the recovery of ilmenite consists in grinding the crushing plant product in four open-end rod mills in closed circuit with mechanically vibrating screens to approximately -20 mesh. The screen undersize is treated in Crockett magnetic separators which produce three products: magnetic concentrate, nonmagnetic tailing containing ilmenite and gangue, and a Crockett slime overflow. The non- magnetic tailing is classified into eight sizer spigots products and a classifier overflow. The spigot sand products are tabled separately to produce a rough ilmenite concentrate, a middling product and a tailing. The table middlings are returned to Crockett feed. The table concentrate is dewatered and dried and further concentrated on Wetherill magnetic separators to produce the finished ilmenite concentrate.

Exploratory work was conducted in the fabrication of integrated circuitry, specifically linear amplifier circuits, by three general methods: 1) monolithic diffused silicon; 2) a combination of metal thin-film and monolithic diffused silicon; and 3) a hybrid of metal films and diffused silicon on an alunina substrate. In these linear amplifier integrated circuits the followzng conditions were desired: very high-frequency response, high voltage gain, and good thermal tracking stability of electrical characteristics. The resulting circuit designs imposed problems of isolation between elements, layout and smallness of size of active elements, and close tolerances on electrzcal characteristics of the passive elements. Interconnection problems for specific designs resulted from the small dimensions involved and the topography of the hybrid fabrication techniques. The desired integrated-circuit characteristics were achieved with the technologies of categories 2 and 3 above. Solutions to the problems imposed by these characteristics lay in the ability to isolate czrcuit elements of small size while providing a layout designed to minimize element-to-element variations. Sufficient freedom in the formation of passive elements was achieved by uniting the metal film and the monolithic silicon technologies. The most satisfactory designs were based on the beam-lead interconnection and isolation technique. SINCE the advent of integrated circuits, major emphasis has been on fabricating digital integrated circuits. Linear circuits require high performance, high voltage, and tighter tolerance components which are not always compatible with the capability of process technology available for fabrication of these circuits into integrated form. Fortunately the growth of newer and improved processes and materials for fabricating integrated circuits has been an accelerated one. This has now made possible the translation of stringent performance requirements of the linear circuits into microminiature integrated circuits of the same performance. In the exploratory work of fabricating high-performance Linear Integrated Circuits—LIC, the following objectives were formulated: i) fabrication of high-frequency transistors such as the type 2N918 isolated on a single silicon substrate; ii) fabrication of medium-frequency transistors having a very high gain at low collector currents such as the types 2N930/2N2484 isolated on a single substrate ; iii) fabrication of tight-tolerance, high-valued resistors having low temperature coefficients of resistance and stable thermal tracking characteristics, these resistors to be fabricated on an active or passive substrate; iv) simultaneous fabrication of complementary transistors—pn and pnp-on the same silicon substrate; v) fabrication of newer active elements such as MOS, FET transistors along with the conventional active and passive elements on the same silicon substrate. State-of-the-art assessment f all the available processes, materials, and technology to meet above objectives indicated that economic fabrication of LIC cannot be achieved by a single technology for all types of linear circuits. Where design and performance of a given linear circuit can be modified and tolerated to the extent of a particular technology, then alone is it possible to fabricate a LIC using a single process technology such as all diffused, planar technology. In order to evaluate this economic breakpoint with design and performance compromise in fabricating LIC, it is essential that a thorough understanding be obtained of techniques, potentials, and limitations of all the various process technology and materials
