INTRODUCTION Interest in multicommodity stabilization schemes has increased recently for several reasons, a most important one being the experienced wide swings in primary commodity prices. These prices rose sharply between mid - 1972 and end - 1974 giving commodity exporting countries an opportunity to gain sizeable increases in export earnings. But since then, prices have tumbled and these countries are searching for a means to stabilize if not to increase their earnings. While this problem is particularly serious for developing countries, the developed countries are concerned about the impending upward price swing, which would increase inflation before recovery from the world recession is assured. As a direct consequence of the emergency meeting of the U.N. General Assembly devoted to commodity problems in April of 1974, interest has been renewed in the Keynesian (4) plan for an international multicommodity buffer stock program. In particular, UNCTAD (8) is designing an integrated commodity scheme to be discussed within that body. In terms of approaches that have appeared in designing such a program, none exist which relate to the interpretation of the independence and interdependence of prices of the commodities of interest. Typical criteria for selecting commodities for the scheme have included their importance in world trade, their particular origin from developing countries, and their feasibility for storage. But the financial management of a multicommodity buffer stock requires a consideration of commodity prices, yields, and risks as does as any portfolio of assets. Remoteness of western Canadian coals has always been a barrier to the use of Canadian coals domestically. However, the world energy crunch, increased mining costs, stricter environmental controls, labor shortages, etc., are such that by 1980 a shortfall from traditional U.S. sources will prevail. Of necessity, Canada must then bring western coals east, requiring major new transportation initiatives. CN, CP Rail and Neptune Terminals are proceeding jointly with the design of a $30 million, fully automated, coal terminal at Thunder Bay. This element forms part of a $400 million integral transportation system to open new lines, improve trackage, acquire rolling stock and ships, for an initial capacity of 3 million tpy.

THE rapid development of the Portland-cement industry implies that the country is being very carefully searched for material suitable for its manufacture. Such material can be found at a great many places ; but deposits thoroughly satisfactory in chemical composition, and at the same time meeting all the other requirements connected with the economic production and profitable marketing of the product, are exceedingly few, if I may judge from the investigations which I have had to make in a number of States. The raw mixture which by its clinking and grinding forms Portland cement contains approximately 75 per cent. of carbonate of lime. This is found in nature as limestone or marl. The natural rock commonly carries either more than the required percentage of carbonate of lime (in which case it has to be reduced by suitable admixture of clayey ingredients) or less-in which case purer lime carbonate has to be added. The controlling ingredient, therefore, is carbonate of lime, or limestone of the right composition. Among the most serious difficulties is that of finding limestones low enough in magnesia to meet the exacting requirements of certain specifications. All engineers recognize that there is a limit beyond which it is not safe to let the magnesia go; but within that limit there is considerable difference of opinion. Until that difference is finally settled, no one would be willing to invest the large sum of money necessary for a Portland-cement plant, if it were not certain that the usual requirements in this particular could be satisfied. The usual limit in well-established specifications is 5 per cent. of magnesium oxide in the finished cement, but many specifications limit the amount to 3 per cent. These figures

In the May 1959 issue of [=] the authors reported on the gyrotheodolite as used for determining azimuths in surface and underground work. Further research has led to the development of a new type of gyro instrument, the band-suspended gyro attachment, which is essentially an upset gyro attached to the top of a theodolite. The new gyro attachment is light enough to be mounted on any angle-measuring instrument if the design of the telescope standard permits. Gyrotheodolite units have been used to transfer meridian lines underground in the Coeur d'Alene mining district, although they have not been used extensively in the U.S. In other parts of the world, however, they have been adopted as the standard surveying instrument by mining engineers.

TO date there has been but limited interest in alloys of 80 to 95 pct Co and Fe with or without other additions. In 1932, S. R. Williams' reported practically zero magnetostriction for the 90 pct Co-10 pct Fe alloy. This same composition was used for pole pieces to control the magnetic field in magnetrons operating at high temperatures.' In 1947, a 90 pct Co, 9.5 pct Fe, and 0.5 pct Mn composition was investigated3 for use in ballast lamps because of its high temperature coefficient of resistance. Recently, as part of a survey of ductile and malleable magnetic alloys capable of being processed to thin gages for possible applications in memory devices, the high Co-Fe alloys have been re-examined to determine their fabricating and magnetic characteristics. Alloys from 80 up to 95 pct Co and Fe with and without additions such as vanadium were prepared. In general these all had excellent ductility and malleability. Wire was drawn to thin gages without difficulty and fine hard-drawn wires flattened to 2) The phenomenon may have potential in estimating the carbon content of molybdenum. A given solution-treating temperature and cooling rate could perhaps be calibrated so that the area fraction of surface covered by carbide could be interpreted in terms of carbon concentration. By segregating to the surface, a big "magnification" of the carbon content is obtained, which should make the method cheap, direct, and sensitive and, therefore, perhaps of interest to the molybdenum industry. This work was conducted at Battelle Memorial Institute. Similarly, strip was cold-rolled as much as 99.75 pct reduction to a 0.25 mil thickness without intermediate anneals. Samples of round and flat wire and foil, in the severely cold-worked and annealed states, were checked for magnetic characteristics. The alloys exhibited widely divergent magnetic characteristics depending on the processing and heat-treating procedures used in preparing the samples. Direct-current hysteresis loops showing the different magnetic characteristics of 90 pct Co, 9.5 pct Fe, and 0.5 pct Mn alloys are shown in Figs. 1 to 8 inclusive, while Figs. 9 and 10 show the loops for an alloy of 82 pct Co, 11.75 pct Fe, 5.6 pct V, and 0.65 pct Mn. Figs. 1 and 2 show the high remanence and exceedingly square-loop characteristics of the hard-drawn wire and ribbon roll flattened therefrom. With the change in processing from roll flattening to flattening by drawing through flat diamond dies the resultant change in texture is accompanied by the drastic change in the shape of the loop as shown in Fig. 3. This skewed loop on annealing reverts to a more normal loop as shown in Fig. 8. The most unique loops are obtained with flat rolled strip. These are shown in Figs. 4 and 5. In the case of the hard-rolled material, Fig. 4, there is little change in induction until the magnetizing force reaches 50 oe. From 50 to 60 oe there is a sharp increase in induction to over 15,000 gauss, which for all practical purposes is saturation. The induction remains at a constant value while the magnetizing force decreases to 40 oe. At this point the

FOR many years more money was spent in the search for and the production of gold than the gold that was produced was worth. The same thing is now true of petroleum. More money is spent for the search and. production of petroleum than the market value of the petroleum produced. The first thought concerning this statement will be that men would not embark in a business in which more money was expended than the value of the product produced. Few people realize that more money is spent in the oil business than the market value of the oil produced. This would not stop the spending if they knew it. Everybody knows that more money goes into a lottery than comes out of it, yet the instinct for gambling is so widespread and so easily excited that lotteries are forbidden by law. The hope of winning the grand prize is what lures men on. The search for and production of oil has become a more frenzied game than the search for gold ever was. THE OIL BUSINESS PAYS NOW BUT THE PUBLIC WILL PAY FOR ALL ETERNITY The public could sit back and enjoy all of this, knowing they were being supplied with petroleum products at less than their real cost, if it were not that our most valuable and least plentiful natural resource is being dissipated at an alarming rate, which is constantly increasing. Here is an industry that for many years has not been governed by natural laws. The so-called laws of individual and mass psychology play a more important role than natural physical and economic laws. Even the law of supply and demand works only in the most remote way in this industry. The oil production business as a whole is now paying the price for this folly; but the public will pay the price for all eternity. The seriousness of this matter, as an outstanding national problem, has been under consideration by many men for a long time, but nothing has been done to conserve our petroleum resources and prolong the supply, although very important steps have recently been taken to make this possible.

L. and W.) and New Jersey Central lines; freight and coal being forwarded by the Morris and Essex to tide-water at Hoboken, and by the Central Railroad to Elizabethport and Port Johnson ; also, by the Belvidere and Delaware connections through Trenton to South Amboy.

THE geophysicist is interested greatly in the resistivities of different formations or parts of the earth's crust; sometimes he is interested in a single figure in the nature of an average, or what may be called the effec-tive resistivity, of all the formations or parts of the crust at a given location to a certain depth. Conversely, the engineer whose work is concerned with the coordination of power and communication lines in such a manner as to avoid electrical interference between these two types of facilities is concerned very much with this effective resistivity; to a lesser extent he is interested in the resistivities of individual forma-tions. In connection with his work the coordination engineer often estimates the effective resistivity; of the earth from measurements of the mutual impedances of lines; in other instances he derives front measure-ments of a different type the resistivities of different layers of the crust and synthesizes these to obtain an estimate of the effective resistivity. In connection with problems concerning the coordination of power and telephone lines, measurements from which earth resistivities can be estimated have been made at many points in the United States by the American Telephone and Telegraph Co. and its associated companies, in cooperation with various power companies and with railroad companies having electrified sections of line. Other such measurements have been made by the Joint Subcommittee on Development and Research of the Edison Electric Institute and the Bell Telephone System. A study has been made of the correlation of these data with the ages and types of materials of the strata of the earth's crust at each of the test locations. The purpose of this study has been primarily to provide information to assist in predicting the order of magnitude of effective resistivities to be used in the preliminary consideration of problems con-cerned with the coordination of power and communication lines. To make the results of such a study, most useful, it is essential that the geo-logical data to be secured when such a prediction is wanted be readily obtainable. In order to establish whether or not there is a real temperature effect in fatigue (independent of environment) , poly crystalline copper and Cu- 7.9 A1 alloy have been cycled at 298° and 7° K in vacuo and the fatigue lives compared with those in air and in liquid nitrogen. The lives of both copper and the alloy were found to be highly temperature-dependent in the absence of environment. This result casts serious doubt on the validity of the cell structure hypothesis for stage I crack propagation as presently formulated, because it predicts that there should be no such tempevnture dependence. On the other hand, the plastic blunling process is consistent with the result. Effects of environment aside, the homogenization of slip which accompanies testing at low temperature, and at low strains, seems to be the main cause for increased fatigue life. At high strain amplitudes, the fatigue lives of wavy slip materials, typically copper, are independent of temperature.' It is well-known, however, that low-strain lives greatly as as the temperature of testing is decreased. By contrast, the lives of planar slip materials, such as Cu-7.9 pct A1 alloy, increase to an even greater extent with decreasing temperature throughout both the high and low strain ranges.1'2'5 The mechanism of this temperature effect is associated with the earliest stages of fatigue failure,'" crack nucleation, and stage I growth,"' which is slow propagation along slip bands to the depth of a few grain diameters. Such life behavior has been interpreted on at least two different bases. On the one hand, those interested in the temperature effect at high strain amplitudes1 believe that stage I growth occurs by the plastic blunting process of crack propagation.7'9 They explain the effect in planar slip materials by the homogenization of slip* which accompanies fatigue testing at low temper- atures and serves both to delay crack nucleation and to decrease the rate of stage I propagation. On the other hand, Holt and Backofen,2 who have studied the effect in low strain fatigue, believe that stage I growth can be interpreted by a cell structure hypothesis.10-12 They have challenged2 the conclusion that there is a real temperature effect in this regime of fatigue testing and have interpreted the increased fatigue lives almost entirely in terms of the "environmental-protective'' effect of the liquid nitrogen and helium baths used to obtain low temperatures. This interpretation by Holt and Backofen2 may offer a means of discriminating between these two mechanisms as currently formulated and used to explain stage I growth. On the basis of the plastic blunting process applied to stage I crack propagation,7* the low strain fatigue lives of both wavy and planar slip materials should be increased with decreasing temperature. This follows because both materials show increased slip homogenization in this strain regime."13 Consequently, crack nucleation in intensified bands will be delayed and the linking of such small cracks into larger stage I cracks will be difficult. In addition, the blunting process required to lengthen a stage I crack from the order of 2 to 10 (where the strain concentration of the crack begins to overcome the slip homogenization property of the material) will also be retarded. These delays will give rise to longer lives in both kinds of material. In contrast to the blunting hypothesis, no temperature dependence has been predicted on the basis of the cell structure hypothesis, because it is well-known that materials cycled at low temperature show no differences in type of dislocation structure for a given strain amplitude.18"20 If the lives of wavy and planar slip materials do show a temperature dependence when the environment is eliminated as a variable, then it is questionable whether cell structures per se have a fundamental role in fatigue fracture. Accordingly, specimens of copper and Cu-7.9 wt pct A1 have been cycled at 298° and 77°K in vacuo and the fatigue lives compared with those in air and in liquid nitrogen, in order to establish whether or not there is a real temperature effect in low strain fatigue. Since it is difficult to measure the strains in specimens when cycled in vacuo, S-N curves have been used as the basis of comparison. In studying the influence of temperature on fatigue life in ordinary environment, Holt and Backofen2 used the superior basis of E-N curves. However, they also published S-N curves and thus established the relationship between E-N and S-N curves. This relationship is used to support the S-N comparison reported in the present investigation. EXPERIMENTAL Materials. THE introduction of the tungsten-carbide bit and the single-use bit to the mining industry has had far-reaching effects on the advancement of drilling techniques. Six years of testing these new bits has disclosed new factors not previously considered. The mining industry, which is ordinarily slow to change, has accepted the new methods of drilling as a possible relief for the reduced manpower available to the mines. In 1950 an extensive program of testing was begun at the Calloway mine of the Tennessee Copper Co. to gather data on rock-drill bits and drill steel: When these tests are concluded the information should be sufficient to establish a drilling program. The scope of this article is a progress repor the years 1950 and 1951. The deposits of the Ducktown, Tenn. mining district are massive sulphide replacement lenses in folded and metamorphosed Cambrian schists and graywackes. The primary ore consists of pyrrhotite, pyrite, and chalcopyrite with minor amounts of zinc blende, bornite, specularite, magnetite, quartz, chlorite, and iron-magnesium-lime silicates. The deposits are high-temperature hydrothermal replacements. The drilling conditions vary from a hard highly siliceous rock to the softer material of the ore body, thereby giving a range of hardnesses to be considered. Single-Use Bits Test work was done first on two single-use bits to determine life expectancy, costs, rate rate of penetration, gage wear, and ease of use. Every new mining district has had its own peculiar experiences in inventing and experimenting upon new methods for the various operations of mining, and more particularly in the processes of crushing and dressing ores. As a matter of course, during this period many old things have been reinvented, patented, and cast aside, there to remain until at a future day other geniuses shall bring them forth again as new. In this respect the Copper Region of Michigan has not been behind other mining centres, and probably in no other part of the country has more money been expended in devising new machines and improvements upon old ones for the crushing of the rock. The appliances for washing the sand have not been so varied, simply for the reason that, having but one mineral, or rather metal, of high specific gravity to separate from rock material which varies but little in its character in any one mine, it requires much less care than is necessary in most mining centres of the world. At the beginning of operations in that district most of the work was in the control of Cornish miners, who introduced the simplest of Cornish mills, namely, wooden stem pestles, with wooden shafts and cams. These were well suited to the small mines, and particularly to the limited means of transporting more expensive machinery. As these facilities improved, they were enabled to change to iron, and to vary their patterns of rods, shafts, cams, and mortars. The most approved pattern, finally obtained, is the square or round stem, with collar adjustable by means of keys. In its present form it is a bar of cold rolled shafting, an eye in the top, an adjustable collar with key-plate and keys, the head and a shoe of chilled iron. The stem is fitted into the head by a slight taper. The battery has heretofore been of wood, lined with chilled cast plates, and bed-plate of the same, but within the past year the California pattern has been introduced. The screens are of sheet-steel, drilled with 16 holes to the inch. During this period of trial and gradual improvement in the pestle stamps, in the years 1855-6, the Ball steam-stamps were introduced, and after years of labor and expense, have been made the most efficient and powerful machines ever yet used for the purpose. An empirical study of the nature of the embrittle-ment which occurs in martensitic and semiaustenitic precipitation hardening stainless steels upon exposure at temperatures of from about 550" to 875°F has been undertaken. This work was aimed at determining cazusation and means of controlling this phenomenon. A commercial copper bearing precipitation hardening alloy was used as a basic material for study. The effect of heat treatment variables was studied as was the effect of variations in analysis. It is concluded from the evidence that martensitic and semiaustenitic precipitation hardening stainless steels are subject to 885°F ernbrittlement similar to that observed in the straight chromium stainless steels. A characteristic of precipitation hardening stainless steels which has limited their use in certain applications is that they embrittle when held at temperatures in the range of from about 550" to 900°F. This is true to a more or less degree in all currently available alloys, either the basically martensitic type or the semiaustenitic type. The rate of embrittlement varies markedly with exposure temperature, being low at 550" to 600°F and in-creasing as the temperature increases. In spite of this embrittlement, these alloys with their unique combination of high mechanical strength, reasonable toughness, and good corrosion resistance are used in many hundreds of applications. Nevertheless, there are potential applications where the embrittle-ment described is a limiting factor. The purpose of this investigation was to study the embrittlement of these alloys and to find a way to control or eliminate it. GUIDELINES USED IN PRESENT WORK The work reported in this paper is based on a study of 17-4 PH*, a very widely used alloy. It has been used *Trademark of Armco Steel Corp., licensor. in pressurized water and boiling water atomic reactors operating at about 550°F for a number of years. As the life of such equipment is extended or operating temperatures are raised, the possibility of embrit-tlement becomes of increasing concern to materials engineers. Much investigation work was done with respect to the use of 17-4 PH at 550°F. K. C. Antony' states "Such estimation" (of an activation energy for the diffusion of chromium in iron) "would indicate W. This statement is modified however by the recognition of the accelerating tendencies of applied stress and internal stress as well as the possible effect of irradiation. In this investigation of 17-4 PH, the H 1100 (1900°F-1 hr oil quench or air cool + 1100°F-4 hr-air cool) condition was used, partly because this condition is normally used in atomic reactors. As shown later, the precipitation hardening temperature has no real bearing on the rate of embrittlement. An exposure temperature of 800°F was selected since embrittlement at 800°F is rapid, permitting development of relative data in time periods of 400 to 500 hr. For those not familiar, a nominal present day analysis of 17-4 PH is: C Mn P S SiCrNiCuCbN 0.04 0.30 0.015 0.015 0.60 16.00 4.30 3.25 0.23 0.030 TYPICAL BEHAVIOR OF 17-4 PH Figs. 1 and 2 show the behavior of a commercial heat of 17-4 PH under the conditions defined. Characteristically, 800°F exposure causes a rapid drop in Charpy V-notch impact strength. Tensile and yield strengths gradually increase and a gradual loss of elongation and reduction of area occur, accompanied by an increase in hardness. Notched tensile strength increases to 125 hr exposure and then sharply decreases after exposure for 500 hr. The notched vs un-notched tensile ratio remains virtually constant to exposure for 125 hr (1.67 to 1.56) but drops to 1.15 after 500 hr. Tensile ductility is not alarmingly affected even after much longer exposure times than these. For example, samples aged at 1100°F for 1 hr exposed at 800°F for 4000 hr showed a drop in elonga-tion of from 13 to 11 pct and in reduction of area of from 58 to 37 pct. A new device based on a constant rate of loading has been developed for the compression testing of green and dry pellets. This device has a lower test variation for green pellets than the existing constant deformation rate tester. While the test variations for dry pellets are similar for both types of machine, the new tester is sensitive enough to measure dry pellet deformations of 15 µ in. for cyclic loading studies. In the study discussed here, the compressive load at which a pellet breaks proved to be a normally distributed random variable, and the load-deformation relationship was found to be linear for dry pellets but not for green pellets. The paper emphasizes the need for a standardized test procedure throughout the industry. For many years the green and dry compressive strengths of pellets have been considered as possible criteria of pellet performance during induration. Little attention, however, has been given to standardizing the unfired pellet compressive strength test or to determining the characteristics of this test. At a large meeting of the members of the American Fund for French Wounded it which Mr. Franklin D. Roosevelt presided and at which Mrs. B. Girault Lathrop, President of the Paris Administration A. F.F. W., gave a most interesting address, special rows of seats were reserved for the members of the W. A. A. I. M. E. Those who were unable to be present will be glad to hear that Mrs. Lathrop complimented our organization on having supplied the largest dispensary operated by the A. F. F. W. and the Red Cross in northern France. The A. F. F. W. is going to erect an American Memorial Hospital at Rheims and it is hoped that the one hundred beds in the hospital will be endowed in memory of the men who gave their lives for the liberty of the world. It will be possible not only to endow beds, for which sums of $6000 each are needed, but also to give, as. memorials, sun- parlors at a cost of $10,000 each, two roof gardens at $5000 each, a laundry at $10,000 and a garage at $10,000. The New York Section has undertaken to endow a heel in memory of members of the A. I. M. E. who gave their lives in the Great War. Perhaps other Sections or groups of Sections may wish to do the same thing, or if no other Section cares to assume so much responsibility possibly individuals may like to join the fund already growing in New York, in which case they should send their contributions to Mrs. W. Y. Westervelt, 1 Lexington Ave., New York, N. Y.

Since advances in the understanding of gravity thickening reflects the development of knowledge about suspensions themselves, the paper starts with the discussion of flocculent and nonflocculent suspensions. The properties of flocculent suspensions and their behavior in different concentration regions (zone settling, channelling, compression) are defined and discussed. In the main portion of the paper, the behavior of flocculent and nonflocculent suspensions during batch as well as continuous thickening, is presented, together with a brief review of the gravity thickening theories and sizing methods. The classical as well as the most recently developed methods are presented and their use and limitations are discussed.

A study of certain fundamental characteristics of liquid-oxygen explosives has been made. A discussion is given of the factors affecting the life of the cartridge and the relation between explosive strength and oxygen content. The explosive properties of L.O.X. cartridges packed with a variety of lampblacks, gas blacks, and other materials have been experimentally determined by means of the ballistic pendulum, Bichel gage, and measurement of the rate of detonation. DURING the past year, the Bureau of Mines has carried on an investigation of liquid-oxygen explosives (L.O.X.) to supplement the work described in previous publications.' The present paper gives results of the first part of this work, which was a laboratory investigation of the properties of typical combustibles used in L.O.X., and the relation of these properties to the absorption and retention of oxygen by the explosives and their explosive characteristics. No attempt will be made to describe the development of liquid-oxygen explosives, because this phase of the subject has been well covered. The L.O.X. cartridge consists of a paper wrapper filled with an absorbent combustible material that is saturated with liquid oxygen by soaking it therein. Petroleum has been found in Russia in various localities from north to south, as may be seen from the list given below: (a) In the basin of the Petchora river, Northern Russia. (b) In the basin of the Volga river, in the governments of Samara and Saratoff. (c) In the government of Astrakhan and in the Uralsk territory, close to the northern and eastern coast of the Caspian sea. (d) At Grozny in Northeastern Caucasus. (e) In the Daghestan territory, Eastern Caucasus, on the Caspian sea. (f) On the Apsheron peninsula (Baku and other districts) close to the Caspian sea shore. (g) On the island of Tcheleken in the caspiah sea, also on the island of Sviatoi. (h) In the Transcaspian territory on the Neftianaia Gora (Oil hill) and on the surrounding hills. (i) In the Ferghana valley in Russian Central Asia. (j) On the Kertch-and Taman peninsulas on the Black sea. (k) In Siberia it has been discovered in the Transbaikal territory and on the island of Sakhalin.. ' ' In the above-mentioned districts petroleum has been found to exist under different geological conditions and to vary in its chemical and physical properties. At the present time petroleum is produced in Russia at Baku, Grozny, on the island of Tcheleken, in the Ferghana district, and in the Uralsk territory. The yearly production in 1912 throughout the Russian Empire amounted to 69,400,000 barrels, of which the Baku fields were responsible for 52,000,000 barrels. This shows that the Balm fields on the Apsheron peninsula are the chief oil-producing centers in Russia, being at the same time the oldest of all our oil fields. In this paper I shall discuss the Baku fields only, leaving all the others until a later date. The Apsheron peninsula in the Eastern Caucasus protrudes into the Caspian sea in the shape of a triangle some 47 miles long covering a total area of some 750 square miles. A problem often encountered is the provision of materials which have impurity contents below a certain specified level. This problem is in some cases solved by making use of the segregation of the impurity with respect to the liquid and solid states of the material: an ingot of the material is subjected to directional solidification and the ends of the ingot. which are richer in solutes which respectively raise and lower the melting point of the solvent, are removed. An important extension of this process is the zone-refining process invented by pfann,' in which molten zones are passed successively along the length of an ingot and displace solutes towards the ends. Pfann's process is particularly appropriate in cases for which the segregation coefficient k does not differ greatly from unity, or when the impurity content must be kept extremely low (-=,6 atom fraction); it is widely used, particularly in the purification of materials for use in semiconductor electronic devices. It is the purpose of this paper to investigate theoretically the efficiency of the above refining processes; that is! we determine the most economic method of attaining a given yield of solvent of specified purity, taking into account the variables of the process. One variable of interest is the effective value of the segregation coefficient. which depends on the rate of movement of the liquid-solid interface and on the degree of stirring in the liquid; in addition to this, in the zone-refining process we are also interested in the choice of zone length for most efficient operation. A mathematical determination is made here of the lengths of successive molten zones which give, for an initially uniform distribution, the most efficient removal of a solute of arbitrary distribution coefficient. In order to be able to give a quantitative treatment of efficiency, we first define figures of merit applicable to a given distribution of solute. FIGURE OF MERIT Let an ingot of length L contain a distribution y(x) of solute: we confine our discussion to mono-tonic distributions, in order to avoid inconsistencies in the subsequent analysis.
