The Ni-Ni,Ti lamellar eutectic alloy responds to unidirectional solidification by alig-nment of the platelets of the two phases roilghly perpendicular to the moving solid-liquid interface. X-ray diffraction and zetallographic experimenls show that the following cryslallographic relationships exist in the directionally solidified ingots: lamellar interface w [0001] Ni3Ti 11 (111 }Ni local growth direction (1120) Ni3Ti n (110) Ni These relationships are rationalized on the basis of the crystallography of the constituent phases. In recent years researchers in several laboratories have shown that an aligned or "controlled" micro-structure can be produced in many binary eutectic alloys by forcing the alloy to solidify unidirectionally in an elongated crucible.'-3 It also has been found that a unique crystallographic relationship often develops between the two phases in such a structure.4, 5 Since a parallel arrangement of phase particles in an alloy should, and, in many cases, does, produce unique and highly anisotropic properties, the alloys so produced are of potential interest in a variety of applications. Studies of these alloys are also of interest at the academic level because they help to improve our basic understanding of the way in which metals solidify. This paper reports the metallographic and crystallographic structure of another of these alloys—that between nickel and Ni3Ti. In a separate paper, hot tensile and stress rupture properties as well as deformation and fracture behavior of the same alloy are discussed.19 EXPERIMENTAL DETAILS AND RESULTS General Characteristics of the Eutectic Reaction. Several small exploratory Ni-Ti melts were made to resolve a conflict in Hansen6 over the eutectic composition. The alloy containing 16.4 at. pct Ti, Fig. 1, appeared metallographically to be closest to the eutectic composition, although small dendritic patches of proeutectic nickel are present. The eutectic morphology is lamellar and appears quite sharp and angular, indicating a strong influence of crystallographic factors upon the microstructure. Some of the eutectic nickel platelets are continuous with the primary phase, whereas in hyper eutectic melts a "halo" of nickel generally surrounded the proeutectic inter-metallic platelets, indicating that nickel is the nucleating phase in this eutectic reaction. Extensive precipitation of Ni3Ti has occurred in the primary nickel phase in a Widmanstatten pattern which makes the dendrites difficult to differentiate from the eutectic mixture. This phenomenon may account for discrepancies among the eutectic compositions reported in the literature. The sloping solvus line bounding the nickel primary solid solution explains the presence of the intermetallic precipitate. Poole and Hume-Rothery7 report that the solubility of titanium in nickel drops from 13.8 at. pct at the eutectic temperature (1304°C) to approximately 9 at. pct at 700°C (Ni3Ti, on the other hand, melts con-gruently and exhibits essentially no solubility for nickel or titanium). Lever rule calculations based upon Poole and Hume-Rothery's phase diagram indicate an increase from 21 vol pct Ni3Ti in the eutectic mixture at the eutectic temperature to 61 pct at room temperature. Selective point count measurements of the volume fraction of eutectic Ni3Ti platelets in the eutectic microstructure yielded a value of 46 i 2 vol pct, which required extensive precipitation of Ni3Ti from the nickel solid solution onto the eutectic intermetallic platelets during cooling from the solidification temperature. Influence of Directional Solidification. Nickel bar and titanium sponge of 99.9 pct purity were induction-melted in zirconia crucibles under argon in the proportion of 13.8 wt pct (16.4 at. pct) Ti to produce 14-lb master heats which were cast into investment molds yielding 5/8-in.-diam pins approximately 10 in. long. These pins were remelted under argon in horizontal zirconia boats and unidirectionally solidified to produce 1/2-in.-sq ingots approximately 44 in. long. The volumetric behavior of five mixtures of black oil and natural gas and of two mixtures of condensate and natural gas from a field in the San Joaquin Valley was experimentally established. This work was carried out at roo°, I9o° and 250°F in the pressure interval between 400 and 5000 psi. The viscosity of the liquid phase of four mixtures of black oil and natural gas was experimentally measured in the above-indicated temperature and pressure intervals. The effect of methane upon the precipitation of bitumen from the black oil was studied at 230°F. Introduction The solution of a number of the economical and technological problems which arise in connection with petroleum production is dependent upon the availability of the necessary quantitative information covering the materials involved. This requires data concerning physical properties of naturally occurring hydrocarbon mixtures at the pressures and temperatures characteristic of underground petroleum reservoirs. The experimental determination of the desired data for each situation encountered is relatively time-consuming. However, it is considered to yield results sufficiently more reliable than those obtained from correlations to justify the effort. For these reasons there was undertaken a laboratory investigation of the viscosity of the liquid phase and the volu- metric and phase behavior of mixtures of oil and gas samples obtained from wells in a field located in the San Joaquin Valley. Terminology The nomenclature of petroleum engineering is not at present entirely standardized. Many commonly used technical terms are not everywhere given the same meanings. For the purposes of this paper the following definitions will be adopted: Black oil refers to the dark-colored, hydrocarbon liquid obtained when the producing horizon of the well lies partly in the condensed hydrocarbon phase of the reservoir. Condensate is the term applied to the relatively volatile, pale yellow or amber-colored hydrocarbon liquid that is often obtained from the surface separator system when the producing horizon of the well lies in the gas cap of the reservoir. The gas obtained from the surface separator system is called natural gas regardless of whether the well is producing black oil or condensate. As might be expected from the multi-component character of naturally occurring hydrocarbon materials, the compositions of black oil, condensate and natural gas are subject to considerable variation depending upon the temperatures and pressures prevailing in the surface separator system as well as upon the overall composition of the material produced from the reservoir. STRICTLY speaking, ore-dressing does not commence until after the ore is in the mill bins, but where complex ores are treated and their minerals separated to make the best commercial concentrate with the lowest economical tailing, ore-dressing problems begin and often center in the mine itself. This does not refer to the grade of the ore, but rather to the frequent condition in which metallurgical results radically different from customary are obtained because of changes in the character of the ore treated. Different varieties of ore can usually be identified as coming from well-defined depths or zones in the mine, or from known sections of the orebody. Varying degrees of alteration of the ore, inclusions of harmful gangue material, or variations in the quantities of component metallic minerals are often causes of temporarily bad metallurgical results in otherwise successfully operated plants, especially those employing differential flotation to. recover several valuable minerals contained in the ore.

A generalized rate equation for the reduction of iron oxide was derived from which two particular equations were obtained: one for rate controlled by the transportation of gas, the other for rate controlled by the phase-boundary reaction. Pellets of pure ferric oxide having diameters of 8.5 to 17.5 mm and a density of 4.8 g per cm3 were prepared and reduced by hydrogen at 750° to 900°C. From the analysis of data obtairzed, it was observed that neither the phase-houndarv reaction nor the transportation of gas controlled entirely the rate of redziction. Rather, the mechanism of reduction can he divided into three stages. In the beginning, the process seems to depend predominantly on the surJrce reaction, hut after a layer of iron is formed the diffusion of gas becomes the controlling factor. Towards the end, however, the rate falls sharply due to a decrease in porosity. The times predicted by the generalized equation for a certain degree of reduction showed an excellent agreement with those obtained experinmentally for pellets of varying sizes. WIDE interest in iron oxide reduction has resulted in many valuable studies pertaining to thermody-namical properties, equilibrium diagrams, and chemical kinetics. Although the thermodynamical properties and equilibrium diagrams are now known with a fair degree of accuracy, the mechanism and rate-controlling step in the reduction of iron oxides presents a problem to research workers which is still unsolved. This is because the field of chemical kinetics is so highly complex. Besides the chemical reaction between oxide and reducing gas, several other processes are occurring simultaneously such as solid-state diffusion of iron through intermediate oxides (FeO and Fe3O4), the diffusion of reducing gas inwards and of product gas outwards, and the sintering of iron if reduction is carried out above the sintering temperature of iron. Furthermore, there is a large number of variables, including the nature and flow rate of the reducing gas, the chemical composition and physical properties of the ore, the temperature of reaction, particle size, and so forth, all of which can affect both the mechanism and the kinetics of reduction. Despite the controversy and diversity of opinion about the mechanism of iron oxide reduction, three main schools of thought have emerged. According to the first, the rate is controlled by the diffusion of gas through the boundary layer of stagnant gas; the second claims that the rate is proportional to the area of the metal-oxide interface, while the third believes the transportation of reducing gas from the main stream to the metal-oxide interface and of product gas from the metal-oxide interface to the main stream to be the rate-controlling step. 1) The boundary-layer theory is true mainly for packed beds where the flow of gas through the bed is important. For a single particle, the boundary layer may be prevented from being the rate-controlling step if a gas flow rate of reducing gas above the critical flow rate is used. 2) Several workers have reported a linear advance of the Fe/FeO interface which provides excellent support for the belief that reduction is controlled by the surface area. McKewanl has given formal shape to this concept with mathematical derivation and has shown it to be valid for reduction of several iron ores, hematite, and magnetite, both by H2 and H2, H2O, N2 mixtures. Some other investigators, however, do not find this theory to be entirely valid. Deviations have been observed2 and further confirmedS3 Hansen4 also agrees that deviations do occur, at least in the latter stages of reduction, while from the data of several investigators summarized by Themelis and Gauvin,5 it is clear that the theory is not always applicable and further that, when it is applicable, it does not hold in the final stages of reduction. 3) Among those who claim the transportation of gas to be the rate-controlling step are Udy and Lorig,6 Bogdandy and Janke,7 and Kawasaki el a1.8 The validity of the theory has also been acknowledged indirectly by other research workers who show that the sintering and recrystallization of iron cause a decrease in reduction rate, for it is only if the transportation of gas is important that this sintering has any bearing. However, the theory has been rejected by some because they have failed to obtain

In March 1962, over three months ahead of schedule, production began from the Ventersdorp Contact Reef of the Western Deep Levels Ltd. mine on the West Witwatersrand. Few mines have captured the interest of mining men and the public as has Western Deep Levels. It has presented the gold mining industry with a challenge which involved the opening of an ultradeep mine with the attendant problems of exceptionally heavy capital commitments ($77 million to start of production), high rock temperatures and pressures at great depths, cementation and pumping in an area notorious for the volume of subsurface water, and the necessity for entirely new thinking and the application of new ideas. HISTORY Not all the problems facing Western Deep Levels were, however, new. Situated 43 miles from Johannesburg, just off the main road to Potchefstroom, Western Deep Levels was the sixth company to undertake mining operations on what is known as the West Wits line and it could draw on the wealth of experience gained by other pioneer mines in the area.

INTRODUCTION The longwall method of mining coal underground is now a highly developed and accepted mining technology. However, it was only through a long history of successes and failures that this technology now has the potential for reversing the declining trend in underground mining productivity in the United States. From its early beginnings in the United States during the 1800's, several species of longwalls have evolved. The evolutionary record consists of a series of overlapping birth-death eras, with each era giving way to another unique longwall technology. Typically, an era begins when some new longwall technology appears in response to a new technical opportunity or economic need. This new technology is adopted initially by only a few innovators. Later, other imitators get on the bandwagon and the technology diffuses throughout the user population. But evolving technical demands and socio-economic circumstances eventually cause many of the adopters to discontinue its use. This paper chronicles seven eras in the history of the evolution and utilization of longwall technologies in the United States. Some of the important factors that have influenced this history are discussed. Some distinctions are drawn between the operators who were first to adopt longwalls (innovators), and the imitators who followed. Statistics are presented which show that longwall mining is being adopted at an exponentially increasing rate, substantiating the forecast for a significant number of new longwall installations in' the future. Potential barriers to this increased utilization of long- walls are noted.

The technology of nickel-activated sintering of tungsten powder has been successfully applied to the densification of plasma-sprayed tungsten. Nickel was added by infiltration in a zinc solution followed by evaporation of the solvent. After sintering one hour at 1300°C density 95 pct of theoretical and transverse rupture strength of 74,000 psi were obtained. Shrinkage was found to be anisotropic and the mechanism of densification was comparable to that found in the nickel-activated sintering of tungsten powder. 1 HE use of a plasma spray gun for the fabrication of massive tungsten parts has become increasingly interesting. Applications now exist where a deposit in the as-sprayed condition is satisfactory. However, these deposits are generally characterized by a lamellar anisotropic microstructure containing 15 pct porosity of which, typically, two-thirds is open to the surface. Mechanically, the as-sprayed deposits fail at relatively low stress levels with a biscuit-like fracture. As a result of these problems the possibility of improving structure and strength by sintering treatments subsequent to spraying is particularly attractive. Preferably this sintering treatment should be adaptable to large bodies of sprayed metal. The similarity between the as-sprayed tungsten structure and that of a powder compact suggests that the relatively low-temperature activated sintering technique1 might be profitably employed in the densification of plasma-sprayed tungsten. It was the purpose of the present investigation to develop a technique for introducing the nickel-activating agent into the sprayed structure, to evaluate the amount and mechanism of densification obtained as a function of time and temperature, and to obtain an indication of the relative strength before and after sintering. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE Powder used for spraying was purchased from the Wah Chang Corp. in several size fractions ranging from an average size of 4 to 150 . These powders were sized further for an explicit study of the influence of average feed size on densification. All powders were dried at 200°C before use. Spraying was accomplished with a Plasma Flame unit manufactured by Thermal Dynamics Corp. Several modifications of the unit were helpful in conducting the investigation. A variable speed auger feed mechanism coupled with the carrier gas mecha nism facilitated the use of fine particle sizes. A coil of ten turns of copper tubing in series with the arc power and concentrically would around the nozzle improved nozzle life and extended the range of operating currents available. The function of the auxiliary coil was to cause the arc to spin and to prevent impingement at only one point in the nozzle. Normally air sprayed deposits were made with an arc maintained at 400 amp at 50 to 70 v. The arc was blown by a gas mixture containing from 5 pct H, 95 pct N for the finest powder feed sizes ranging to 20 pct H, 80 pct N for the coarsest size. The flow rate was maintained at 100 cu ft per hr NTP through a nozzle of 0.25 in. ID. When apraying in air, the powder stream was directed toward an aluminum substrate for ease of mechanical removal of the deposit. The substrate was cooled by diverting the plasma flame with an air jet, and a second jet was directed on the deposit surface. In this configuration a gun-to-work distance of 2 to 3 in. was found to be satisfactory. Fig. 1 represents a typical as-sprayed deposit micro-structure. Laboratory studies of protective atmosphere spraying were carried out in cylindrical chamber 8 in. in diam by 18 in. in length. In operating the nozzle attached to such a chamber, particular care was required to avoid nozzle burn out due to reduced gas flow. The structure and density of the chamber sprayed deposits varied over wide ranges depending on substrate temperature. For the purposes of this investigation, flat deposits were made approximately 2 in. sq by 3/8 in. thick. From these deposits individual samples were cut an ground to a rectangular shape typically 1 1/2 in. by 1/8 in. sq such that the long dimension was perpendicular to the spraying direction. For the study of shrinkage anisotropy deposits up to one inch thick were produced. From these, rectangular samples were cut having a longer dimension parallel to the spraying axis. Prior to the addition of activating agent, the samples were deoxidized in hydrogen at 800°C for 20 min. No detectable dimensional or microstructural change was observed after this treatment. TOWARD the close of 1925, a British geologist, T. Landell Mills, brought to the notice of .A. Chester Beatty and selection Trust Ltd. certain mineral areas in southern Yugoslavia. Mills' data, which included rough maps and preliminary reports by' a Yugoslav engineer, Jules Draskocy, appeared interesting to Reatty, and early in 1926, I, with three British assistants, proceeded to Serbiaand commenced the investigation of several groups of ancient mine workings. They were found to be extensive and the geological conditions-schists, limestones, and andesitic intrusive-favorable for mineral deposits. At Stan Trg, on the Trepca Concession, five rniles east of Kosovska Mitrovica, an ancient filled adit was found, a shelter-hut erected, and work started in reopening this adit.

The primitive mode of mining clay by open workings, in which the overlying beds of earth (commonly termed the " bearing ") were removed, and the clay then dug out by sinking shallow pits, is still the prevalent and almost universal mode of extraction. This is particularly true of our cretaceous and tertiary clays, which are generally earthy in character, and but slightly covered by drift and alluvium. The most accessible beds in many of our clay districts have been worked out, and clay miners are compelled to search for new outcrops, or to remove thicker beds of top dirt or bearing. Under this stimulus subterranean working, or mining proper, has been suggested. A brief notice of this new mode, as employed by Mr. Otto Ernst, near the head of Chesquake's Creek, three miles south of South Amboy, New Jersey, is here presented for your consideration. To comply with the California Mine Safety Orders pertaining to transportation of mine workers over mine railroads, the management of the New Idria mine in San Benito County, Calif., designed special man-cars. The new regulations, dated October 1958, make it mandatory for mine man-cars to be designed for carrying five or more men to and from the mine workings. At the New Idria mine, largest single producer of mercury in the U.S., each shift normally employs about 70 men. However, with the possibility of a future increase in the work force, seven man-cars were constructed with a total carrying capacity of 84 men. The general design of the mine man-cars was dictated by safety regulations plus the physical characteristics of the mine-low headroom, limited side clearance in haulageways, and track irregularities due to ground swells. The cars measure 10 ft long, 44 in. wide, and 50 in. high and were built at an average cost of $450 per car. All assembly work was done at the mine site.

As is well known, the alloys of iron containing 18 ± per cent chromium, 8* per cent nickel and less than 1.2 per cent carbon exhibit the same allotropic modifications as iron. The face-centered cubic or gamma phase is stable at high temperatures and the body-centered cubic or alpha ferrite is presumably stable at room temperature. The transformation from the gamma phase to the alpha phase in alloys of the above composition (18-8 or stainless steel) is sluggish; even moderately rapid cooling permits the retention of the gamma phase. Cold-work, however, causes the transformation from gamma to alpha to occur at room temperatures. It is difficult, nevertheless, to induce complete transformation regardless of the method of cold-working. Since metallographic polishing is very effective in transforming the surface austenite to ferrite, as indicated by the magnetic studies of Buehl and Wulff,1 it was decided to investigate the phenomenon by electron diffraction methods. Apparatus The apparatus used (Fig. 1) was a hot-filament type employing movable slits, similar to that described by Germer.2 The sample-to-photographic plate distance was 69 cm. and the accelerating voltage 30 kv. Since electrons do not in general follow geometrical paths, it is necessary that either the electron source or the sample be movable in a plane normal to the beam. In this case the sample is fixed and the electron source is movable. The source is adjusted until the shadow of the sample appears in the brightest part of the beam as viewed on the fluorescent screen, then the slits composing the two pinholes are inoved into position one by one. The system is evacuated by means of a mercury diffusion pump backed up with a Cenco Hypervac oil pump. Pressures lower than 10- mm. of Hg are read on a calibrated ionization gauge.

As is well known, the alloys of iron containing 18 ± per cent chromium, 8* per cent nickel and less than 1.2 per cent carbon exhibit the same allotropic modifications as iron. The face-centered cubic or gamma phase is stable at high temperatures and the body-centered cubic or alpha ferrite is presumably stable at room temperature. The transformation from the gamma phase to the alpha phase in alloys of the above composition (18-8 or stainless steel) is sluggish; even moderately rapid cooling permits the retention of the gamma phase. Cold-work, however, causes the transformation from gamma to alpha to occur at room temperatures. It is difficult, nevertheless, to induce complete transformation regardless of the method of cold-working. Since metallographic polishing is very effective in transforming the surface austenite to ferrite, as indicated by the magnetic studies of Buehl and Wulff,1 it was decided to investigate the phenomenon by electron diffraction methods. Apparatus The apparatus used (Fig. 1) was a hot-filament type employing movable slits, similar to that described by Germer.2 The sample-to-photographic plate distance was 69 cm. and the accelerating voltage 30 kv. Since electrons do not in general follow geometrical paths, it is necessary that either the electron source or the sample be movable in a plane normal to the beam. In this case the sample is fixed and the electron source is movable. The source is adjusted until the shadow of the sample appears in the brightest part of the beam as viewed on the fluorescent screen, then the slits composing the two pinholes are inoved into position one by one. The system is evacuated by means of a mercury diffusion pump backed up with a Cenco Hypervac oil pump. Pressures lower than 10- mm. of Hg are read on a calibrated ionization gauge.

ION exchange is one of hydrometallurgy's new tools, new in application, vet old in principle. Cation exchange between solution and a solid exchanger has been known for more than a century, but ion exchange is still in its infancy for metallurgical use. Still hampered by cost of media, it is faced with much development of actual physical handling. Growing consumption of the rarer metals and need to treat leaner ores are pushing extractive methods ahead. Public concern with stream pollution, or legal requirements, are forcing a clean-up of waste discharge. Industries are finding it vital to make some recovery from heretofore waste material to help pay costs of discharge treatment.

The use of strain gauges and compression pads for an underground bolt installation in a central Pennsylvania coal mine revealed that satisfactory anchorage could not be maintained in the shale stratum that constituted the immediate roof. Comprehensive laboratory tests resulted in a new shell designed with an increased area of contact and smaller surface serrations. Retightening of the bolt was also found to be beneficial for maintenance of high load values. Roof bolting in coal mines has progressed very rapidly in the last decade, and today this method of support is in general use. There are many theories concerning the functions of roof bolts, but the importance of beam building is indisputable. Proper tension in the bolts minimizes shearing along bedding planes and creates a thick, competent beam from individually weak layers. Bolting must be accomplished immediately upon exposure of the roof, and bolt tension must be maintained if roof failure is to be prevented. Seams are being mined today with roof bolt support where conventional timbering was not effective.' The widespread use of continuous mining equipment was made possible by roof bolts which permit long supported spans free of obstructions. Since adequate anchorage is the key to successful bolting, better methods for determining the efficiency of anchorage are continually being sought. Attempts have been made to measure bolt loads, thus assessing anchorage efficiency by employing sensing devices between the bolt head and roof. 3-s None of the techniques appears to be very accurate, and all have at least one serious deficiency. The greatest efforts are being directed toward the standardization of the pull test.6" Nevertheless, the author believes that the pull test is only one criterion for establishing the efficiency of anchorage and not necessarily the most important one. The conventional pull test involves the short-term application of forces, whereas the success of roof bolt installations is dependent upon the ability of anchorage to sustain relatively long-term forces. Therefore, it would appear that the time-dependent function of the anchor is the single most important parameter for the success of roof bolting in many types of rocks. UNDERGROUND TESTS Strain gauges and compression pads were employed to measure bolt loads in a central Pennsylvania coal mine.8 Bolting had been employed only sporadically in the shale top since dubious benefits were obtained with this type of support. Table I shows some typical results from this investigation. Anchorage losses were extremely variable among the bolts, but all showed a considerable degree of bleed-off. The tests indicated that anchorage efficiency was extremely low in this type of shale. The results confirmed that bolting under these conditions was practically worthless, and thus a waste of material and labor. Probably even more important, bolting constituted a hazard when reliance was placed upon it for support. Certainly the complete lack of confidence in roof bolting, which was apparent in the mine personnel, was justifiable since the bolts did not accomplish their purpose. PRELIMINARY LABORATORY BOLT TESTS The extreme losses in bolt tension that were detected in underground installations prompted a comprehensive study to assess the causes. However, preliminary studies were first made to determine the combined stresses in a roof bolt and to prove conclusively that the observed bleed-off phenomena were due to anchorage: slippage and not to some other physical manifestation.
