A locked-cycle balling procedure has been designed to simulate continuous, closed- circuit balling drum operation in the laboratory. By this method, it is possible to simulate the surging in green-ball production rate and circulating load that is experienced in industrial balling circuits. Through an investigation of the effect of feed rate on the stability of the locked-cycle, balling process, it was found that higher feed rates lead to increasing instability in the process. An analysis of the experimental ,results is presented and the utility of the locked-cycle experimental technique for evaluating the stability of an industrial balling drum operation is discussed.

Tile National Research Council announces further appointments to National Research Fellowships in physics and chemistry. The object of the National Research Council in maintaining a system of research fellowships is to promote fundamental research in physics and chemistry primarily in educational institutions in the United States. Fellowships are awarded to persons who have demonstrated a high order of ability in research for the purpose of enabling them to conduct investigations at educational institutions which make adequate provisions for research: in physics and chemistry. THE outstanding characteristic of the last hundred years has been the world-wide rise in the standard of living. Man's dominion over nature is increasing with an accelerating pace and more and more the forces and materials of this world are being made to serve man's necessities and his convenience. We demand both quantities and varieties of goods that were beyond the dreams, to say nothing of the reach, of our fore-fathers, and our possession of them has become so much a matter of course that they excite no remark. Literally, thousands of young folks have required an explanation of a recent popular song, "Thanks for the Buggy Ride," for the reason that their own experience does not extend back into the pre-flivver age. This transition from the use of vehicles made mainly of wood and drawn by animal power, to metal made cars propelled by mineral fuels is all but complete and the memory even of older conditions is already fading. This is symbolic of what is happening all around us. In a recent book, Dr. Frank J. Goodenough, president of Johns Hopkins University, referred to Chinese civilization as a ?vegetable" civilization meaning thereby that the Chinese depend mainly upon the plant world for food, clothing and other necessities and luxuries. Our own people did the same hardly more than a hundred years ago. In 1820, this country produced and used only 5 lb. of pig iron per capita, but a quick and enormous change was wrought in the hundred, years that followed, and in 1920 the amount was 119 times as much, or 597 lb. It has since increased even beyond this and touched a peak of 809 lb. in 1923. In that year our output was more than twice that of 1903 and nine times that of 1883. This increase in production

SCHLESINGER,* Denver, Colo.-Two problems are of great interest to the radium manufacturer at the present tine: The first is to perfect a process, more efficient and more economical, which is capable of treating a greater variety of ores. . Practically all the radium now manufactured in the United States is extracted from carnotite ores and these vary a great deal according to their location. The amount of sulfates contained in the ore is of particular importance, and any straight acid-leaching method, such as developed by the Bureau of Mines, becomes prohibitive when the ore contains more than 0.5 per cent. of sulfates, as the sulfates go into solution and naturally precipitate the radium as insoluble radium sulfate. Since the amount of ore obtained from any one claim is usually comparatively small, it is necessary to work a number of claims in different localities, and a process, in order to be commercially satisfactory, should handle all of these ores. In other words, it would be entirely unprofitable for radium manufacturers to employ any process which cannot treat any but sulfate-free ores. He must deal with carnotite containing appreciable amounts of sulfates, and must be able to work this in with the other ores. Carbonaceous ores from certain sections in Utah; which are known to contain as pinch as 1.0 per cent. and more of volatile matters, are prone to a, nitric acid-leaching process. The second problem relates to the treatment of concentrates. There is no doubt that a very large amount of low-grade ore, containing less than 0.75 per cent. uranium oxide, is available. It has been demonstrated that these ores can be concentrated, but there is still room for research

Throughout the world nuclear power re- actors are being designed and constructed as the energy source for stationary power plants. They are built to power submarines, surface ships, and long-range aircraft and to provide small package power plants that can be set up with relative ease in outlying areas. Regardless of type, most of these plants are designed to operate at the highest permissible temperatures and with the greatest possible burn-up of fuel. On paper it is now possible to design a nuclear power plant that will out-perform all existing types of power-generating plants, and at costs which are attractive. Such plants, however, are not now being built, nor will they ever be built, unless major engineering advances are made in the realm of reactor materials. The reason for this is straight- forward enough. Although it is known that huge quantities of energy can be generated in nuclear fuels within short periods of time, as yet there are no construction materials capable of withstanding the severe conditions that would exist within a power reactor operating with ultrahigh output.

The decline in deliverability of conventional natural gas supplies and the general energy crisis have resulted in national programs directed toward the commercialization of energy conversion technologies. Foremost among these efforts is the gasification of coal. Coal reserves represent our most abundant fossil fuel resource. Its utilization is hampered both by its form value and its pollution qualities. Coal gasification is commercially feasible today and projects requiring hundreds of millions of dollars and years of construction time are underway. This paper provides a perspective for the scope, time, and cost of these venture projects. Resource requirements, plant products, and coal gasification processes are discussed. Emphasis is placed on the effects of coal feedstock and prices on plant economics.

ThE tendency toward further oxidation of the intermediate oxides and the high volatilization rates of the higher oxides have prevented direct attainment of equilibrium data for the system tungsten-oxygen. As a result, St. Pierre et al.1 have proposed a phase diagram (to 800°C) based on thermody-namic data to 1200°C for the known tungsten oxides (WO2z, W18O49, W20O58, and WO3) and a report on a tungsten suboxide W3O.2 Recent modification of a technique previously described3 5 now permits adequate preservation of compositions of mixtures of metallic tungsten and metal oxides (e.g., of tungsten, cobalt, calcium, samarium, titanium) in order that condensed phase relations may be established to 1700 This method has been applied to study the high-temperature stability of tungsten oxides. In the method used, the desired compositions were sealed in nonreactive containers such that only a small gas volume remained. Each sample then established its own equilibrium atmosphere at temperature. This method has advantages in the study of systems of the W-0 type where knowledge of the condensed phases is desirable but for which composition and pressure of the gas phase are not readily attainable because of oxide volatility. Beryllium is the most soluble of the double-acceptor impurities in germanium; the solubility is at least 1 x 10 19 atoms cm3. Photoconductive, optical, and electrical measurements were made on a set of Ge:Be samples grown without other intentionally added imp~ivities. The excited-states spectrum of beryllium in germanium was determined both in zero field and in magnetic fields up to 30 kc. It was found that the absorption 0-f lines in the vicinity of the G line increased markedly with increasing magnetic field. The ioniza-tion energy of neutral beryllium in germanium was determined to be 24.3 * 0.1 mez: using the excited-states spectrum. An infrared detector using a Ge:Be element was found to have a normalized detectivity D* (50 p, 1000 cps, 1 cps) of 9 X ldO cm-~ps"~-w-'. The Ge:Be sambles exhibited low-field breakdown and inibzirity band conduction effects at low temperatures. WHILE the properties of most dopants in germanium have been thoroughly investigated, the properties of beryllium in germanium have had relatively little attention. Much of the work that has been done' has been concerned with the properties of singly ionized beryllium in germanium. The purpose of the present work was to determine the photoconductive and electrical properties of beryllium-doped germanium (Ge:~e) with a small concentration of other electrically active impurities. Ge:Be is of special interest since beryllium is the most soluble of the known double-acceptor impurities in germanium. MATERIALS PREPARATION A set of &:Be crystals with beryllium concentrations between 5 x 1013 and 1x 10'' cmm3 and without other intentionally added impurities was grown in a hydrogen atmosphere by the horizontal zone-refining techniques described by Swiggard and Shenker.2 The segregation coefficient of beryllium in germanium was found to be about 0.07 and its maximum solubility was found to be greater than 1 x 10'' atoms cm-3 which is in agreement with previous results.' Most of the crystals were found to have a small net concentration of shallow acceptors; for example, a crystal having a beryllium concentration of 1.1 X 1016 cm-3 was found to have a net concentration of shallow acceptors of less than 1.5 X 1013 cm-3. Ingots designed to have a beryllium concentration of 1 x 1017 cm-3 or less exhibited a loss of electrically active beryllium. That is, the beryllium concentration was lower than expected and the decrease of the beryllium concentration along the length of the ingot was much larger than expected. It is hypothesized that this effect is due to the oxidation of the beryllium by the residual oxygen in the system. This effect is similar to but not as severe as the effect observed with boron in germani~m.3, 4 OPTICAL ABSORPTION SPECTRUM The excited-states spectrum of neutral beryllium atoms in germanium was studied by measuring the infrared optical absorption spectrum. A typical spectrum is shown in Fig. 1; the labeling of the absorption lines follows that of Fisher and Fan.* The spacings between the observed lines and the D line are nearly equal to the corresponding spacings for the other ac -ceptors in germanium.5-7 By the use of the theoretical result67' that the neutral impurity ionization energy is 2.53 mev larger than the energy of the D line, the ionization energy of neutral beryllium in germanium was determined to be 24.3 * 0.1 mev at 4.2"K. This method yields a more precise value of the impurity ionization energy than the usual Hall effect method.' The absorption spectrum of Ge:Be was also measured as a function of magnetic field using a magnetic field parallel to the incident radiation and using unpolarized radiation. A typical spectrum taken at 30 kG is shown in Fig. 2. An unexpected observation is that the absorption of the lines in the vicinity of the G line (there is a strong possibility that some of these lines may be associated with lines other than the G line) increases with magnetic field. A new classification of eutectics is proposed, based on tlze entvopies of wzelting of the tuio eutectic phases. The clnssification was used to predict suitable tvansparent analogs of the metallic systems. Experimental confir?nation loas obtained for the theovetical shape of the lamellar solid-liquid interface, fov the fault mechanisms of lanzellar spacing changes, and for the development of low-energy solid-solid boundaries between the lamellae. An explanation is presented to account jov the irvegular and coinplex regular structures zrhich are found in some eritectic systems. FrOM experimental observations, single-phase materials can be divided into two groups according to their solidification characteristics, those that grow as faceted crystals and those that do not. acksonl' showed from thermodynamic reasoning that the type of growth depended on a factor a which was almost thg entropy of melting. Most nonmetals have high entropies of melting (a greater than 2) and grow with crystalline facets. Most metals have low entropies of melting (CY less than 2) and grow almost isotropically with no facets. The authors propose that eutectics may be classified in a similar manner. There are three groups of eutectics, those in which both phases have low entropies of melting, those in which one phase has a high and the other phase has a low entropy of melting, and those in which both phases have high entropies of melting. Lamellar or rodlike structures are formed in systems in which both phases have low entropies of melting. In these alloys dendrites of either phase may be formed, when the alloy is rich in the relevant component. Examples are Pb-Sn, Sn-Cd, Pb-Cd, Sn-Zn, Al-Zn. Irregular, Fig. 14((), or complex regular, Fig. 14(b), structures are formed in alloys in which one phase has a high entropy of melting and the other has a low entropy of melting. Examples are A1-Si, Zn-MgzZnll, Pb-Bi, Sn-Bi. When the alloys are rich in the low entropy of melting phase, dendrites are formed; when the alloys are rich in the high entropy of melting phase, faceted primary crystals are produced. These crystals are sometimes called hoppers or pseudodendrites. In this work the term dendrite will only be used to describe nonfaceted primary crystals. Dendrites are not formed during solidification in high entropy of melting single-phase materials. The third group of eutectics includes alloys in which both phases have high entropies of melting. Each phase grows with a faceted solid-liquid interface. Since most metals do not have high entropies of melting, metallic examples in this eutectic group are rare. However they may occur between some intermetallics and semiconductors or semimetals such as silicon, germanium, and bismuth. Attempts have been made to study eutectic solidification visually by watching the growth process.374 Since metals are not transparent, the observations had to be made on external surfaces. This difficulty can be overcome by using transparent analogs of the metallic systems. As was mentioned earlier, most single-phase compounds have entropies of melting greater than 2 and so grow as faceted crystals. Recently organic materials with entropies of melting less than 2 were investigated.' These materials grow in exactly the same way as the low entropy of melting metals. When the materials are pure, they grow with a solid-liquid interface parallel to an isotherm; when they are impure, cells or dendrites are formed. Since these materials are transparent, have low melting points, and even have cubic structures, they should be ideal for making up transparent analogs of the metallic eutectics. The purpose of the present work was to investigate these organic eutectics and to see whether this quite different series of eutectics could be classified in the same way as the metallic systems. The observations made on the organic alloys are also discussed with reference to the current theories of lamellar growth. Explanations are proposed to account for the structures formed in the other eutectic groups. EXPERIMENTAL Thin cells containing the organic alloys were uni-direction ally solidified on a specially constructed microscope stage.' Uniform growth rates were obtained by moving the cells, with a motor drive, through a fixed temperature gradient, so that the solid-liquid interface remained stationary with respect to the microscope objective lens. The cells were made by fusing two microscope cover slides 7/8 by 7/8 by 1/100 in. together on three sides, leaving a gap of 1 to 3 mils between the slides, and these were filled by surface tension. A preliminary investigation of the phase diagram between two components could be made very rapidly. One side of the cell was filled with component A and the other side with component B. Since only a small amount of mixing could occur every composition from pure A to pure B was present in the cell. When the cell was placed in the temperature gradient a pictorial representation of the phase diagram was obtained. Eutectics, peritectics, "interorganics", and solid -solid transformations could be readily detected. Fig. 1 shows part of a eutectic phase diagram. The Sample was first grown slowly then stopped. THE function of a pyrometer protecting tube is to maintain an atmosphere about the thermocouple most favorable to its continued accuracy and long life, and at the same time permit the weld of the couple to attain the full temperature of the area or object being measured. In addition to protecting the thermocouple from the chemical or alloying effects of the products of combustion or bath being measured, the tube must also protect the couple from mechanical injury. The conditions met in practice vary so much that no one material is suitable for all applications. The usefulness as well as the expense of maintenance of a pyrometer system are influenced greatly by a choice of the most suitable protecting tube. The tube must protect the couple without itself becoming too great an expense item. The protecting tube should have the following qualities: (1) A melting point well above the highest temperature to be encountered. (2) Sufficient strength through the entire range of temperatures to hold up its own weight and resist such shock and jar as are unavoidable. (3) It must be impervious to the atmosphere or bath to which it will be subject. (4) It must not give off any vapor injurious to the couple. (5) It must not form any oxides fusible below the highest temperature to be measured. The proper location of the tube in the furnace is almost as important as the choice of material. The tube must be placed as near to the work to be heated .as possible. It must be kept out of the direct path of flame, both because that would give too high temperature readings and because partly burned fuel will destroy the tube faster than the quiet products of combustion.

This paper deals with the practical application of the Dutch State Mines cyclone separator for fine-coal cleaning. The more important operating variables are discussed, and results of a number of continuous-scale tests on various fine coals with a 6-in. cyclone separator are given. Descriptions of the Cyanamid Pilot Plant and the 50 tph Cyclone Separator Plant at the Emma Washery in Holland are included. TODAY, as never before, the coal producers of this country are faced with the necessity for obtaining maximum yield of marketable coal of all sizes down to and including the finest. Particular interest is being displayed in a more effective means of recovering the finer sizes which in the past so often have been discarded to waste or treated by inadequate equipment. The reasons for this interest are easily understood. Rising mining costs have resulted in the increased use of mechanized equipment underground for full seam mining. This, in turn, means more refuse in the run-of-mine and also more fines in the feed going to the cleaning plant. Stringent antistream pollution laws now make it necessary at least to impound the fines, and usually it is a paying proposition to recover the coal from these fines before sending them to the storage area. Finally, the market and price of the finer sizes has increased, but at the same time specifications have tightened and the demand is for higher grade products. During the past four years a great deal of publicity has been given to this new process and apparatus for treating fine sizes of ores as well as coal. Excellent discussions of the apparatus itself and the theoretical aspects of the basic operating principles involved in its operation have been presented by M. G. Driessen,1-3 M. R. Geer and H. F. Yancey,4,5 J. W. Hyer6 and more recently by D. A. Dahlstrom8 as well as others.7,9-11 In view of this, it has been decided to include in the present paper only a brief description of the cyclone separator and its operating principles. This paper deals primarily with some of the more practical commercial aspects of the process and equipment required for its operation; the variables in the operation of the cyclone, their effect and means for control; and the results obtained with a 6-in. semicommercial size separator on a variety of fine coals, bituminous and anthracite, using finely ground magnetite for the separating medium solids. A description is included of the commercial-size cyclone separator pilot plant installed by the Dutch State Mines at its Emma mine in Holland, where finely ground slate is utilized as medium solids. Field of Application: The Dutch State Mines cyclone separator operates most efficiently on ores and coal in the size range of % in. to about 48 mesh. On some types of feed, effective separation can be made on sizes as small as 100 mesh, but up to the present, this may be considered exceptional. Depending upon the type of medium used, the specific gravities of separation can be varied within wide limits, up to as high as 2.70, if magnetite is used as medium. THE martensite transformation in lithium, dis- covered by Barrett,' has been studied extensively by X-ray techniques by Barrett and Trautz,² and Barrett and Clifton.V he present paper reports the results of an investigation into the metallographic characteristics of lithium martensite. Such an investigation has not been carried out before. The spontaneous transformation in lithium consists of a change from a body-centered cubic to a close-packed hexagonal structure with the hexagonal layers in imperfect stacking sequence." As far as is known at present, this transformation can be regarded as being crystallographically equivalent to the body-centered cubic to close-packed hexagonal transformation that occurs in zirconium,5 although stacking errors have not been reported in zirconium. From a study of the orientation relationships in zirconium, Burgers5 as proposed that the martensite transformation, b.c.c. to c.p.h., occurs by a heterogeneous shear on the system (112) [111]. The crystal-lographic principle underlying this proposal is that the configuration of atoms in the (112) plane of a b.c.c. structure is exactly the same as that in the (1010) plane of a close-packed hexagonal structure based on the same atomic radius. The pattern in 2v2 both these planes is a rectangle d X 2v2d where v3 d is the atomic diameter. Thus a close-packed hexagonal structure can be built up from a body-centered cubic structure by displacing the (112) planes relative to each other.* This mechanism leads to orientations that can be described by the relations: (110)b.c.e. // (0001)c,p.h.; [111]b.c.c. // [1120]c.p.h Observations confirm these relations. In zirconium, Burgers' measurements indicated an angle of 0" to 2" between the close-packed directions, while Barrett's measurements on lithium indicated an angle of 3". According to the Burgers' mechanism, the martensite habit plane for this transformation would be expected to be the (112)b.c.c. plane, for this plane would not be distorted by the transformation. One of the purposes of this investigation was to find out whether the observed lithium habit plane agrees with this prediction of the Burgers' mechanism. Experimental Procedure Materials: The lithium was from the same purified ingot used by Barrett and Trautz.² The Bridgman technique was used to produce single crystals. To maintain a temperature gradient in the melt, during the production of these crystals, it was necessary to use a steel mould with a wall thickness of only 0.015 in. Metallographic Techniques: Lithium specimens could be given an excellent metallographic polish by swabbing them gently with cold methyl or ethyl alcohol.? The best results were obtained with methyl alcohol saturated with the reaction product, lithium alcoholate. With higher alcohols the reaction became progressively slower and the attack became an etch pit attack rather than a polish attack. Butyl and amyl alcohols were used for macroetching. After polishing, it was necessary to remove all traces of alcohol from the specimens; otherwise, on subsequent quenching in liquid nitrogen, the alcohol froze to a glassy film. The alcohol was removed with dry benzene. The benzene in turn had to be removed before quenching, but since it does not react with lithium it could be allowed to evaporate. The specimens could then be quickly quenched before they began to tarnish. This operation could be carried out in air on all but excessively humid days when it was advisable to use an atmosphere of dry nitrogen or argon. For examinations at room temperature, the specimens could be transferred directly from the benzene bath into a bath of mineral oil. In mineral oil the specimens oxidized slowly by the diffusion of oxygen through the oil but the structure remained visible for about an hour. Lithium Martensite: Specimens prepared in the manner described above transformed spontaneously to martensite with an audible click when quenched into liquid nitrogen; i.e., M, was above the boiling point of nitrogen (77°K). The disparity between this result and the M, temperature of 71°K, found by Barrett and Trautz, is probably to be attributed to the large grain size and freedom from mechanical deformation of the specimens used in the present work. The relief effects produced by the transformation did not disappear when specimens were quenched from liquid nitrogen into mineral oil at room temperature. This permitted the microstructures to be studied at room temperature where, of course, the martensitic phase was no longer present. g samples of Cu-20 wt pct Ag alloy have been mdercooled to a maximum of 197°C by melting under a slag of commercial soda-lime glass in a vitreous silica crucible. No grain refinement of the primary copper was observed in samples undercooled to the maximum of 197°C. When the samples contained a small amount of oxygen, the copper dendrites were partially recrystallized at undercoolings greater than 97°C. In previous papers'-3 reporting the grain structure of undercooled silver and copper, it was observed that grain refinement was dependent on both undercooling and oxygen content. Grain refinement occurred in undercooled silver when the degree of undercooling exceeded the range 153" to 175"C, while in Ag-0 alloys (0.12 wt pct) fine equiaxed grains were exhibited when undercooling was greater than 50°C. Similarly, copper samples undercooled as much as 208°C displayed fan-shaped growth from a single nucleation site, while the grain structure of Cu-O alloys (0.08 wt pct) was fine and equiaxed at undercoolings larger than 150°C. Thus the presence of oxygen greatly reduced the undercooling at which grain refinement occurred. It was also observed that the change in grain size resulted from recrystallization and was not due to an enhanced nucleation rate in the liquid-solid transformation. It is possible that the influence of oxygen on recrystallization is due primarily to its presence as a solute element. walker4,' reported that, although a grain size change did not occur in pure nickel until the undercooling exceeded 150°C, small grains were observed in samples of Ni-Cu alloy solidified at small and large degrees of undercooling. Jackson et al.6 suggested that the fine grained structure of the Ni-Cu alloy resulted from the melting off of dendrite arms during recalescence. This remelting process may occur in alloys as a result of segregation during freezing which causes a variation in liquidus temperature from point to point within a dendrite. It was therefore decided to undercool copper with a metallic alloying element to ascertain whether the presence of a metallic solute would have a similar effect to oxygen in inducing grain refinement. A Cu-Ag alloy was chosen, since both metals had been shown to behave similarly on undercooling. The alloy Cu-20 wt pct Ag was selected since the eutectic constituent outlines the initial growth form of the primary copper, so that the as-frozen grain structure is not obscured if subsequent recrystallization occurs. This paper describes the results of undercooling experiments carried out with Cu-20 pct Ag samples undercooled to a maximum of 197°C and the effect of oxygen content on the grain structure of the undercooled samples. EXPERIMENTAL Melting was carried out in a small cylindrical resistance furnace using "fine" silver granulate and oxygen-free high conductivity copper. The procedure adopted was to melt the required quantity of silver in air in a clean vitreous silica crucible for approximately 15 min, freeze, and add granulated commercial soda-lime glass to form a complete surface slag cover, after which the sample was melted and frozen several times to reduce the oxygen content. The glass slag cover was approximately 3 in. thick. Pieces of copper (=50 g) were added to the crucible until the required quantity to make 350-g samples of alloy had been charged. Each piece was added quickly to the crucible which was held at a temperature slightly above the melting point of silver. The piece was quickly pushed beneath the glass to minimize oxidation and any oxide coating usually decomposed before the piece had settled down into the silver. After the full quantity of copper had been added, the melt was stirred with a silica rod to hasten homogenization and a Pt/Pt 13 pct Rh thermocouple enclosed in a vitreous silica sheath inserted for temperature measurement. Heating and cooling curves were recorded on a potentiometric chart recorder fitted with a zero suppression unit. The milli-voltage range of the recorder was adjusted so that temperatures could be read to 1°C. Heating and cooling curves were taken every hour until three consecutive readings gave the same solidus-liquidus range, consistent with the solidus-liquidus range for this alloy composition by reference to Hansen and Anderko.7 Metallographic examination of samples frozen at this stage, failed to show any variation in composition from bottom to top of the ingot. This paper describes the computer-assisted development and implementation of new written examinations for persons desiring to become certified as underground or surface mine electricians in the State of West Virginia under the certification program defined by the WV Department of Mines and the Board of Miner Training, Education and Certification. The procedures used to develop and validate the new certification tests have simplified the administration of the new tests. Future developments in mine electrical work can also be easily incorporated into the certification program by augmenting the existing computerized pool of test questions prior to computer-production of future test forms. Most important, computerization now facilitates continual evaluation of the certification program, to contribute to greater safety in mine electrical work in West Virginia.

The ancient copper-mines of Lake Superior, having been destroyed or covered by modern mining-dumps, are not accessible to the present inhabitants of that region, and, since no more are likely to be found, some account of those already discovered, from one who has seen them, may be acceptable to the Institute. Early in May, 1855, I took a party of men to open an ancient pit on the Quincy mine-location. Mr. C. C. Douglas was the " Agent," as mine-managers were then called on Lake Superior. The Quincy Co. had previously done work on a fissure-vein, several hundred feet west of the Amygdaloid lode (afterwards called the Pewabic lode), on which was the ancient pit herein described. 'It was at this pit that the Quincy main shaft was subsequently sunk. The ancient pit showed an apparent depth of about 4 R., but when cleaned out it was shown to he 14 ft. deep, having been filled up by the sliding-in of material composed largely of broken rock, taken out in sinking the ancient shaft, and left near its mouth. Midway of the shaft, and below water-level, was found a scaffolding of white-birch poles, which had been used as a landing, to assist in removing the excavated rock. The shaft was 7 ft. in diameter. The excavation had been done by first building fires in order to disintegrate the rock, as was proved by the abundance of charcoal found; then breaking the softencd rock with hammers of diorite, such as is found in the greenstone range on Keweenaw point. These hammers had about the size of large paving-stones. Only broken ones were found, the whole ones having been doubtless carried away for other work, such as could be traced on the lode for a hundred feet or more to the south. THE writer's first experience with flotation was during World War I, in the beneficiation of Alabama graphite schist ores. One plant used a cone with a peripheral overflow; dried ore was distributed by a rotating disk onto the surface of the water. No reagents were added. The flake-graphite film floated along with some fine silica. Dewatering screens separated the flake. Naturally unit capacities were low but results were satisfactory. Minerals Separation mechanical flotation machines were used in another graphite mill. Pine oil was added directly to the head cells, with very good results. All the graphite concentrates from both types of flotation were carefully refined after drying by passing through burr mills, followed by very close sizing on sifters. In March 1927, the writer ran a very successful flotation test on minus 28-mesh, deslimed, Tennessee brown phosphate "sand,"[t] using a mechanical laboratory machine built in the shops of the Anaconda Copper Mining Co., through the courtesy of Ernest Klepetko. The machine was soon converted to a subaeration type, with improved results. This phosphate research program was greatly enlarged and led to the formation of the Phosphate Recovery Corporation. The development of nonmetallic flotation followed rapidly. The first flotation machine for beneficiation of phosphate was installed in January 1928, in a pilot mill, by International Minerals and Chemical Corporation, at Mulberry, Florida. These machines were Minerals Separation, 24-in., subaeration types, with weir control of pulp between cells. The sand bleeders were very small-about 1 ¼ -in. diameter. As the feed contained 15 to 25 per cent plus 28-mesh material, the cells choked up frequently. This was corrected by cutting a 2 by 6-in. bleeder opening above the impellers, at grid level, which short-circuited the coarse fractions directly into the feed of the next cell. The matter of size classification and grinding was a considerable problem, which does not come within the scope of this article. Because of the troubles noted above, cascade-type roughers were installed in the second flotation plant, built about 1930. Experimental cells had been tried in 1928. General plant layout is shown in Fig. I and details of the cascade construction in Fig. 2. The cascade installation in plant No. 2 gave good results and eliminated troubles due to choke-ups and coarse feed. The capacities and metallurgical results equaled those of the modified 24-in. Minerals Separation flotation machines in plant No. I The objections to the cascade installation are the floor space and mill height required.
