A few years ago, the Ventilation Committee established the practice of resenting one topic each year for discussion at the annual meeting. The practice has met good response on the part of committee members and I suggest that it be continued. The topic chosen for this year, "Underground Anemometry," is a topic which has bothered me for more than 20 years. It seems to me that the coal industry is content to rely on slipshod methods for measuring the rate of flow of air underground, so I prefaced my discussional charge to committee members with the statement that I regard air measnrements made in the usual way, with hand held anemometer, as no good. Agreements and disagreements came in from more than a dozen engineers, some of whom are with operating companies, coal and metal; some with manufacturers; others with government agencies. The statement was accompanied by a questionnaire on the use of the rotating vane anemometer and by one describing two methods of using a mechanically held anemometer. The questionnaire will be considered first. The questionnaire and statement are as shown on pages 5 and 6, the committee members and respondents are given on page 4, and the general comments of the latter on page 5. Questionnaire 1. Has your company or agency issued written instructions for care and use of anemometers? If so, please enclose a copy with reply. Only one answer, McElroy's, was affirmative. It gave reference to Bureau of Mines publications1'5 which recom- mend the hand held anemometer for rough measurements and indicate that am accuracy of 5 pct can be had if calibration and method factors are used. Mathews said that instructions are principally oral while Maize reported that state inspectors of his department are well trained in use and care of anemometers. 2. Are your anemometers calibrated periodically? If so, by their manufacturer? or by? Are calibralion corrections applied to all observed mean velocity readings? Only one respondent, Lee, answered negatively as to calibration. This means that anemometers are generally calibrated but the questionnaire failed to ask how often this is done. As no one volunteered the information, we have no data on this point. In six cases the instruments are sent to their manufacturers for calibration. but Krickovic reports that his company limits manu-facturers' calibrations to anemometers which are used by operating personnel; those used by the engineering department being calibrated by U. S. Bureau of Standards. The Anaconda Copper Mining Co. has its ventilation engineers calibrate its anemometers. Most of the respondents say that a calibration correction is applied to each mean velocity reading, but Krickovic limits this to surveys made by the engineering department. Since Lee does not calibrate, he has no correction to apply. Maize reports that his department has its anemometers calibrated but does not apply corrections. 3. Do your men hold the anemometer by hand in measuring air flow? for 1 min? or traverse the section? for 1 min? or at? points for 5 sec each? Of 10 replies, 6 were "yes," 3 were "no," and one was "seldom" with respect to holding by hand. Among the six hand holders, four hold in a central position in the measuring section for a minute, except that two of them, Krickovic and Matthews, traverse the section by hand for survey or fan test. Their operating personnel hold by hand, centrally, for routine measurements. McElroy sometimes traverses with hand-held anemometer in rapid survey work. 4. If the anemometer is not held by hand, how is it supported? Augustadt supports the anemometer on an adjustable rod, Condon on "a rod of sufficient length to reach all points with observer standing in one position throughout traverse and at arm's length from plane of traverse." I presume that arm's length must be interpreted liberally enough to allow for arm movement, otherwise it would be impossible to manipulate the anemometer throughout the traverse section. Mancha upholds Condon in this method of traversing. Glanville hangs the anemometer on the end of a 4-ft staff by the hasp at the top of the anemometer frame. McElroy mounts it on the end of a rigid square shaft, 12 in. long, the staff being at right angles to the axis of the instrument. He traverses the section in two halves, holding the anemometer 3 feet from his body.

The work of Leon Guillet concerning the effect of nickel on the structural properties of brass is checked. The best value for the coefficient of equivalence t, that is, the amount of zinc replaced by 1 per cent. of nickel, is shown to be-1.1 per cent. The best hot- and cold-working nickel silvers, varying in nickel content between the limits of 4 and 18 per cent., are tabulated and plotted diagrammatically. Also, some data are given showing a comparison between the physical properties of a hot- and cold-working low copper-nickel silver, and a commercial cold-working nickel silver containing approximately 8 per cent. more copper. THIS investigation of low copper-nickel silvers was undertaken to check the work of Leon Guillet on special brasses and to determine, more accurately, the effect of the addition of nickel on the microstructure of the binary alloys of copper and zinc. It was hoped that the results could be successfully applied to the practical production of low copper-nickel silvers. To explain the results of his investigations on special brasses, Leon Guillet evolved his conception of "fictitious compositions." He states,1 in his general conclusions, that on the introduction of a small amount of a third metal to a copper-zinc alloy, it enters into solid solution with the normal constituents up to saturation, but by so doing it brings the ternary alloy into a state microscopically equivalent to a binary copper-zinc alloy of fictitious composition, and physically more nearly like the latter than the brass containing copper-zinc in the ratio actually present. The physical properties of the ternary alloy, when compared to the same properties of an actual brass of the fictitious composition, are modified by the natural properties of the third element. Beyond the point of saturation, a special constituent appears and the above generalization no longer holds.

The system Cb-Re was examined in detail utilizing pure metals, careful melting techniques, and heat treatments. Metallographic and X-my methods were utilized for phase identification. In addition to soli-dus determinations, the composition limits and mode of formation of the intermetallic compounds 0 and X were determined. The binary constitution diagram Cb-Re has been the subject of a number of investigations.'-7 Two intermetallic phases have been described and tentative diagrams have been proposed. It was the aim of this investigation to obtain a complete and more accurate diagram through the use of purer alloys and improved techniques. The diagram worked out by Knapton7 was published after our experiments were concluded. EXPERIMENTAL METHODS The starting materials were Re powder of 99.95 pct purity, supplied by the Chase Brass and Copper Co., and Cb rondelles of 99.6 pct purity, supplied by the Electro Metallurgical Co. Typical analyses are given in Table I. The alloys were prepared from compacted Re powder and Cb rondelles; for critical compositions master alloys were used. The melts varied from 5 to 50 g and were melted nonconsumably in an Heraeus arc furnace, under ti-tanium-gettered laboratory grade argon. It was necessary to invert the buttons and remelt, followed by crushing and further remeltings, the number of which depended on the nature of the fracture of the alloy. The weight of each alloy was carefully checked after each melting operation. It was found that significant weight losses occurred only when loose Re powder was used. These losses amounted to a maximum of 3 wt pct in such instances, but did not occur after the charge was once molten, regardless of the composition. Typical loss of weight after 4 remelts, including crushing, amounted to 0.2 wt pct. Oxygen pickup during successive melting cycles did not appear to be significant, since the weight gain values never exceeded 0.01 wt pct. Control of the composition of the alloys was not too difficult; however, the problem of homogenization was a far greater one. Optimum alloying conditions were finally achieved by a combination of master alloy production and repeated crushing and remelting cycles. The compositions of the alloys utilized to determine the constitution diagram are listed in Table 11. The weight balance method was used ultimately as the sole analytical method, since repeated checks indicated that it was accurate to 0.2 pct, if the weight losses were small. The results were double-checked by a metallographic study of the homogeneity of the samples, since this was presumed to be the more serious factor. Heat treatments at 1200°C or lower were accomplished by sealing the specimens in Vycor tubes, heating in a Globar furnace, followed by air cooling. This was considered to be an adequate quench because of the very low temperatures involved. For temperatures of 1200" to 1900°, alloys were homogenized and heat treated in a tungsten-filament resistance vacuum furnace. From 1900" to 2750" a tantalum-tube resistance furnace was utilized, operating under a vacuum of 105 mm Hg. The temperature measurements up to 1200" were made by means of platinum-platinum 10 pct Rh thermocouples, with an accuracy of 5°C. The Zener relaxation in alloys in the a! solid-solution region of the Cu-Ni-Zn ternary system has bear investigated. Of the binary solid solutions that bound this region, Cu-Zn and Ni-Zn exhibit measurable Zener peaks whereas Cu-Ni does not. At constant atomic percent copper, the Peak height drops uni.forinly from the value in the Cu-ZTL binary to zero in CIA-Ali. The cariation of peak ternperatuve with composition is linear. At constant atomic percent zinc, the peak height in the ternary alloys goes through a large maximum as compared with the binary values. The temperature of these peaks varies smoothly with composition. The half-width of the peaks in the ter nary alloys, however, are much larger than those in the binaries. A large enhancement of the relaxation strength of the Zener relaxation in ternary Au-Ag-Zn alloys as compared to the relaxation strengths in Au-Zn and Ag-Zn binary alloys was observed by Firson and ert.' Since this effect was unexpected, the present study was devised to investigate whether enhancement of the Zener relaxation in ternary alloys is a general feature or is particular to the Au-Ag-Zn system. We have chosen the Cu-Ni-Zn alloy system for this investigation. Measurable Zener relaxations are observed in both the Cu-Zn and the Ni-Zn binary systems, but not in the Cu-Ni binary system. A large solid-solution region extends to large concentrations of zinc, making it possible to vary composition of the alloys over a wide range without crossing phase boundaries. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE Two series of alloys were prepared. the first at constant atomic percent copper, the second at constant atomic percent zinc. The compositions of these alloys are shown by the circles in Fig. 1. The alloys were prepared by melting the individual components, each of which had previously been vacuum-melted, in an evacuated quartz capsule in an induction furnace at 1500 C. The capsules containing the molten alloys were quenched in water to reduce coring. Any individual melt which exceeded 0.001 pct weight loss was discarded. The ingots were swaged to a 50 pct reduction of area and annealed for 1 week in an evacuated quartz capsule to aid homogenization. The alloys were then

ALTHOUGH many physical properties of superlat-tices have been studied intensively, relatively little attention has been paid to their mechanical properties until recently. Even for the well-known transformation in 0 brass, the effect of the transformation on plastic behavior has only lately been extensively investigated.''' A partial analysis of dislocation structure in superlattices has been given by cottrel13 and his theory agrees well with the experimental results on CU3AU.4,5 His analysis, however, is implicitly limited to low-temperature effects, since it does not include the behavior of dislocations at temperatures high enough for diffusion, and hence climb, to occur. The work of Herman and Brown2 on the creep of 0 brass indicates that important effects occur under such conditions, and consequently, the theory should be extended to include them. Such high-temperature effects cannot be observed in Cu3Au, since it disorders below the temperature at which diffusion occurs at a reasonable rate. There are materials of the same structure, however, such as Ni3A1, which retain their order up to, or close to, the melting point. GEOMETRY OF THE COMMON SUPERLATTICES The two best-known ordered structures are the 0 brass type, B2, shown in Fig. 1, and the Cu3Au type, Ll2, shown in Fig. 2. In the B2 structure the (000) and (1/2, 1/2, 1/2) sites are different in that they are occupied by different types of atoms. The symmetry of the structure is then lowered from a body-centered cubic, A2, in which the sites are equivalent, with atoms located randomly in the sites, to simple cubic. This lowering of symmetry has the consequence that two types of regions may occur within a crystal: regions where A atoms are in the (0, 0, 0) sites, and regions where they are in (1/2, 1/2, 1/2) sites. The boundary between two such regions will contain bonds between like atoms, and be a surface of higher energy. These regions are known as antiphase domains and the boundary as antiphase boundary. In the B2 structure, boundary formed during the ordering process should disappear as a result of domain growth, since any domain growing to the boundary of two others will join one and engulf the other.' In any well annealed crystal, only a single domain should exist, with antiphase boundary present only in connection with dislocations, as discussed below. The L1, structure is related to the A1 (face-centered cubic) in much the same way as the B2 is to the A2. The face-center sites are occupied by A atoms, and the corner sites by B atoms. The symmetry is again lowered to simple cubic, and antiphase domains can exist. In this case, however, there are four initially equivalent sites in the unit cell: (0,0,0), (0, 1/2, 1/2), (1/2,0, 1/2) and (1/2, 1/2, 0). In the ordered structure any one may be occupied by a B atom and the other three by A atoms. Thus four types of antiphase domains can occur in this structure. This is sufficient to permit a metastable "foam structure" to exist within a crystal.''7 Antiphase boundaries along three different planes are shown in Figs. 3, 4, and 5.* *The presence of a layer of disordered material between antiphase domains, as suggested by Jones and Sykes8 does not seem likely. Such a layer would be a region of unnecessarily high energy which could readily be reduced by the formation of the type of boundary discussed here.__________________________________________________________ The notation (111) [110] means a boundary lying along a (111) plane between antiphase regions related by a 1/2 [I10] translation. It may be seen in Figs. 3 and 4 that an antiphase boundary usually results in incorrect nearest neighbors (shown connected by braces). The original Burkley-Leverett theory has been extended and a more detailed formulation of the waterflood behavior in linear horizontal systems is presented. Particular consideration has been given to the evaluation of capillary pressure effects and differential equations permitting an explicit evaluation of these effects have been derived. On the basis of the developed theory it is recognized that the flooding behavior is dependent upon the length of the system and the rate of injection. At the same time it has been determined that systems of different lengths yield the same flooding behavior if the injection rates and or the fluid viscosities are properly adjrrsted or "scaled." It has also been found that the sensitivity of the flooding behavior with respect to rate and length decreases as any one of these {actors increases in value and that for sufficiently long systems and high rate.; of water injection the flooding behavior becomes independent of rate and length. or "stabilized." To such stabilized conditions the theory formulated by Buckley and Leverett is applicable. A number of laboratory flooding tests have been made and good agreement Iraq been found between theory and experimental observations. The experimental results are discussed and it is shown that under field conditions the flooding behavior is usually stabilized. As a result of these finding; a procedure is indicated for evaluating field performances either on the basis of tests performed with commonly available core samples or by means of calculations using relative permeability data INTRODUCTION In recent years the development of methods for evaluating oil recovery by waterflooding has been the object of considerable research. A theoretical analysis of the mechanisms involved in the displacement of immiscible fluids was originally established by Buckle!- and Leverettl and experimental investipatio~~s have been made by numerons workers." Many of the experimental results are in mutual agreement and bear out several significant features of the flooding mechanism as predicted by theory. Thus it lias been generally recognized that a flood corresponds to the movement of a steep saturation hank or "front" (primary phase), followed by additional gradual oil displacement (subordinate phase). It has also been found that for any porous medium the flooding behavior is largely dependent upon the oil-water viscosity ratio and that for increasing values of this ratio the relative importance of the primary displacement phase decreases while that of the subordinate phase becomes more pronounced. Although the studies to date have clarified certain aspects of the flooding process. they have given rise to observations of a somewhat contradictory nature that cannot he explained in terms of the original theory. These observations pertain mainly to the effect of injection rate or pressure gradient upon recovery. Some investigators report laboratory tests that indicate incresing oil recoverieq with increasing rates of water injectill, others find the flooding behavior to be independent of and other. mention lower oil recoveries with increased injection rates.3 The conflicting evidence indicated above creates considerable uncertainty with respect to laboratory testing procedures and the utilization of the resulting data for field evaluations. The principal purpose of this paper, then, is to resolve these Uncertainties by means of a comprehensive theoretical and experimental investigation of the flooding meanism. THEORETICAL DEVELOPMENT Derivation of Flooding Equations The mathematical description of transient flow phenomena is based upon the consideration of the various processes occurring during an infinitesimal time interval in an infinitesimal volume element and upon the correlation of these processes with those occurring in the adjacent elements. The volume elements are defined as being infinitesimal in comparison to the overall dimensions of the porous system, yet each sufficiently large so aS to encompass the full range of pore openings encountered throughout the system. If a porous system can arbitrarily be subdivided into an infinite number of volume elements all possessing the same distribution of pore openings and if this distribution is unformly continuous. the system may be said to be homogeneous. Such a homogeneous porous medium is considered in the present studivs. It is furthermore postulatecl that only oil and water are present in the pornu wediu. that they act a- totally incompressible and immiscible fluids. and that gravity effects are negligible. The self-diffusion coefficients of ß tin have been deterttlltled using a plating and sectioning technique. The principal diffusivities pavallel and perpendicu1ar to the "c" axis are given by the Arrhenius relations Dc = 8.2 exp (-25,600/RT) sq cnl per sec and Da = 1.4 exp (-23,300/RT) sq cm) per sec. The results are discussed in terms of a vacancy mecharism of diffusion. In conjunction with an investigation of diffusion in dilute indium-tin alloys we have reexamined self-diffusion in tin single crystals. The published self-diffusion coefficients of tin, eensham') have always appeared anomalous in comparison to diffusion data for other metals and do not correlate with parameters derived from creep tests.' In addition to the necessity of confirming the self-diffusion values for use in analyzing the alloy work, self-diffusion in an anisotropic lattice is of considerable fundamental interest and confirmation of the published data seemed worthwhile. For a crystal with an axis of symmetry three-fold or higher the diffusivity at an angle 6 to the axis is given by D? = (Da - Do) sin2?+ Do [1] where Da and Do are the principal diffusivities perpendicular and parallel to the axis. I T is generally accepted that no method of coal cleaning except froth flotation is effective in cleaning dust. In the majority of coals mined in the United States the dust sizes contain a high percentage of impurities, hence the removal of the dust from the coarse sizes lowers the impurity content of these sizes. Dedusted coal is desired as a means of providing a better feed to cleaning plants because of increased efficiency in both dry and wet plants. In dry-cleaning plants, a dedusted feed makes for a pervious and uni¬form bed. With a dusty feed the fines tend to segregate in the feed stream and pass en masse over the air separators, causing a lack of uniform aeration and fluidity of the bed necessary to efficient cleaning. In wet-cleaning plants deducting of the feed often decreases the sludge problem to the point of eliminating the necessity of wasting wash water. It may be advantageous to eliminate sludge-settling equipment in favor of dedusting equipment, to provide the advantages of a dedusted feed to the wet-washing process. Dedusting advantages may include: (1) the removal of fusain, especially advantageous in plants washing coal intended for metallurgical coke; (2) prevention of the gradual build-up of solids in the wash water, with a consequent variation in the washing ability of the system; (3) prevention of the loss of dust to the sludge ponds, providing instead a fuel for local consumption or special markets.

THE heavy media separation process plays an outstanding role in the concentration of 4000 tons of zinc ore per day at the Mascot mill of the American Zinc Co. of Tennessee. Of the total tonnage, 72 pct is treated in the heavy media separation plant to reject 56 pct of the ore as a coarse tailing, which has a ready market. Concentrates from this separation are beneficiated further by jigging and flotation. Approximately 25 pct of the total zinc concentrate production is made in the jig mill. Jig tailings are ground and pumped to the flotation circuit where the balance of the production is made. Fig. 1 shows a generalized flowsheet of the mill. The Mascot ore is a lead-free, honey-colored sphalerite in dolomitic limestone, with lesser amounts of chert and some pyrite. A mineralogical analysis is given in Table I. After 10 years of successful operation with galena medium and treatment of nearly 10,000,000 tons of ore, a decision to convert to ferrosilicon was made early in 1948 because of the increasing price of galena and consequent high operating costs. The conversion was made on Nov. 6, 1948, and the results obtained since that time have shown remarkable improvement over those made with galena. The Table I. For entire life of galena operation, a credit of 40 pct of the value of the new galena added was realized from the sale of waste galena. comparisons given in this report cover the first 6 months of 1950 as representing the ferrosilicon operation, and the year 1947 as representing the galena operation. This was the last full year in which galena was used exclusively and is representative of the best work done during the 10 years of operation with this medium. After only 2 years' operating experience, with ferrosilicon and treatment of 1,807,585 tons many advantages have been revealed and are summarized in Table 11. Development Prior to the introduction of the heavy media process, all the mill feed was crushed through 5/8 in. and treated by jigging. A finished tailing assaying 0.66 pct Zn was made on rougher bull jigs, and cleaner jig tailings were ground for treatment by flotation. The first test work on the sink-and-float method of mineral beneficiation was carried out at Mascot in 1935, using a 3-ft cone and galena medium for batch tests. The following year a 6-ft cone was installed for pilot-plant work. This unit became a part of the mill circuit on March 1, 1936, and handled a gradually increasing tonnage in the next 2 years as the process developed to the point where it could treat all the + 3/8-in. material in the mill feed. Coarse jigging was then discontinued on March 1, 1939, and all coarse tailings have been made by the heavy media separation plant since that time. Feed Preparation: The original feed preparation plant consisted of a drag washer followed by two 4x10-ft Allis-Chalmers washing screens. A surge bin and two additional 5x12-ft AC washing screens were added in 1943. Use of primary and secondary washing screens was found essential to provide the cleanest possible feed for the cone and thereby avoid excessive contamination of the galena medium. Improved washing was obtained by replacing the drag washer with a 7x20-ft Allis-Chalmers scrubber, shown in Fig. 2, which has been in service since May 1944. Throughout the life of the galena operation, delivery of extremely muddy ore to the mill overloaded the medium cleaning system, and it frequently was necessary to cut off the feed and clean the medium for several hours until its normal viscosity had been re-established. THE Federation of Engineering Societies has been created for the sole purpose of public service. This initial meeting surely warrants some discussion of a few of the problems to which this organization, for expression of the --. engineering mind, can quite well give consideration. Some of the greatest of the problems before the country and, in fact, before the world, are those growing out of our industrial development. The enormous industrial expansion of the last fifty' years has lifted the standard of living and comfort beyond any dream of our forefathers. Our economic system under which it has been accomplished has given stimulation to invention, to enterprise, to individual improvement of the highest order, yet it presents a series of human and social difficulties for the solution of which we are groping. The congestion of population is producing subnormal conditions of life. The vast repetitive operations are dulling the human mind. The intermittency bf employment due to the bad coordination of industry, the great waves of unemployment in the ebb and flow of economic tides, produce infinite wastes and great suffering. Our business enterprises have become so large and complex that the old personal relationship between employer and worker has to a great extent disappeared. The aggregation of great wealth, with its power of economic domination, presents social, economic ills which we are constantly struggling to remedy.

Gypsum, the dihydrate form of calcium sulfate, has a history of usefulness to man dating back several thousand years, and a worldwide industry has been built on the mining and processing of this versatile industrial mineral. However, anhydrite, the other principal calcium sulfate mineral has very limited use, so much so that separate statistics for it are not always kept, but are usually included with those for gypsum. Although often found in close association, the two minerals have important chemical differences in that anhydrite is the anhydrous form of calcium sulfate (CaSO,) whereas gypsum is the dihydrate (CAS0;2H20). These two molecules of combined water result in significant differences in hardness, density, and solubility of the two minerals. However, of most importance is the difference in thermal properties wherein gypsum, upon the application of a modest amount of heat, can be converted to the hemihydrate of calcium sulfate (CaS0;Vi H,O) or plaster of paris, an intermediate product upon which is based over 90% of the value of all calcium sulfate end products. Anhydrite, on the other hand, is inert at these temperatures and its uses have been limited to only those few cases where calcium sulfate in the anhydrous form may have an advantage. The earliest known use of gypsum plaster dates back some 5000 years to the time of the Pharaohs of Egypt who had discovered that gypsum rock, when exposed to fire, broke down into a powder which when mixed with water would form a putty that could be "plastered" on a rough mud brick or stone wall to make a smooth finish. It was used down through the centuries in a limited way for ornamental purposes, but did not achieve wide acceptance because of its quick (25 to 30 min) setting or hardening time which made it difficult to use. The first real understanding of gypsum chemistry was developed in France about 1755, and the gradual growth of its present utilization dates from that time. In the United States, the first utilization of gypsum was to grind it to a fine material for use as a soil conditioner at about the time of the Revolutionary War, and the term "land plaster" for ground gypsum has remained in use. Another cementituous material-lime or calcium oxide-had become the usual plastering material, but by about 1870 a method for retarding the set of gypsum plaster was discovered and it has today almost completely replaced lime as a plastering material. In recent years, gypsum products sold in the United States have reached a total valuation of approximately $500 million per year as illustrated in [Table 1].

THE ASSAY FOR COPPER. SOMEONE some time ago remarked that some chemists still insist on telling us how to determine copper by the electrolytic method. The. writer must confess that he believes that everything is not known definitely as yet as to how the exact amount of copper is determined in such material as purest commercial electrolytic copper. Some of us are not yet convinced that the pure copper atom is at all times deposited from an acid solution and that no oxygen or hydrogen will, under certain conditions, accompany it. Difficulties with impurer material are frequent, but erroneous results are not always apparent, since these do not speak so readily for themselves as those in the first case. By this is meant that if a chemist finds 100 per cent. of copper in electrolytic copper it is pretty certain that he perceives the result to be wrong, while if he finds 0.1 per cent. of copper too much in a very impure material he is far more likely to be unconscious of his error. These, in a wide experience, are frequent happenings and the writer has always looked with interest to publications on this subject. In turn, he :feels justified in giving to others a few of his own observations. Up to a few years ago there were two methods of electrolytic copper assay in technical use, which had in common, that the amount of copper deposited on the cathode did not exceed 2 g., and they differed in that, for the one a large sample 1 (20 to 80 g.) was taken from the general sample by a splitting device, dissolved, and from the solution a small portion (to contain 1 or 2, g. of copper) measured out for the electrolytic deposition; in the other Method the copper was determined, generally in 1-g. portions of the separated coarse and fine portions of the sample, all of which passed -a 16 or 20-mesh screen, being accomplished by a 40-mesh screen,

Systematic investigations on silver-rare earth metal systems have been extended on the Ag-Ce system in order to clarify the discrepancies reported in literature. The phase diagram has been reinvestigated on the base of thermal analyses and of microstructure examination on cast and annealed specimen. All intermetallic phases Ag4Ce, Ag3Ce, Ag2Ce and AgCe show no extended range of homogeneity, they melt congruently fm), or decompose peritectically (d) at 815 °C (d), 1030 °C (m), 855 °C (d) and 855 °C (m), respectively. The system shows eutectics at 793 °C/10 at.%, 780 °C/42 at.%, and about 505 °C/81 at.% Ce. d-Ce dissolves up to 2 at .% Ag and decomposes metatectically at 710 °C. Furthermore, the phase transformation of the intermetallics would be clarified. The phases Ag5Ce and Ag51Ce14 reported in literature could not be verified.

I. A. Sirel—I would like to ask Mr. Sims what would the preferred hot metal analysis be as far as manganese and silicon are concerned if you used specially made iron for this process instead of basic iron. C. E. Sims (authors' reply)—A preferred composition would contain somewhat less silicon than the basic pig iron used in these experiments. High silicon requires a large lime addition. Lime must be added in sufficient quantity to neutralize the silica formed and to leave an excess for dephosphorization. Manganese presents almost no problem in operation. It is almost completely oxidized and, in burning, develops considerable heat. The evidence indicates, however, that, in continuous commercial operation, there will be an excess of heat produced, and the bath will need to be cooled in some manner as by the addition of scrap or by utilizing the energy for the direct reduction of ore. There do not seem to be any serious limitations on composition of pig iron. One heat was made with an iron containing 2.27 pct silicon and the phosphorus finished at 0.007 pct. In another, the iron contained 0.45 pct phosphorus which was lowered to 0.019 pct. This indicates considerable leeway in composition. D. R. Loughrey—We are all very much interested in the recent discovery of very large deposits of iron ore both in Labrador and in Venezuela. I would like to ask Mr. Sims if the iron ore at either or both of these places is such that it would lend itself to the manufacture of iron suitable for use in the turbohearth. C. E. Sims-—According to my information, those ores are not essentially different from ores now used in this country for making basic pig. They should, therefore, be adaptable to this process. D. I. Brown—You have spoken about the leeway, or spread in analysis of the various irons you can use in the vessel. I would like to have you tell us, if you can, about the different kinds of steels which can be made in such a vessel. The turbohearth process, or it might more aptly be called pneumatic openhearth, is a little different from that used in most Bessemer shops and in the one in which I worked. If we had a blow in the air over 10 min, the boss was in the pulpit in a hurry

THE principal costs of making a pound of aluminum are for 9 kw-hr of electricity and for 1.9 Ib of the oxide (A1203) called alumina. A pound of alumina is made by digesting 2 or 3 lb of bauxite in hot caustic solutions, settling and filtering out the oxides of silicon, iron, and titanium and precipitating and calcining the A1203 as a pure, white powder. The cost of foreign bauxite delivered at an alumina plant in the U.S. may equal or exceed the cost of its chemical treatment to make alumina. Some of the principal factors affecting costs in the utilization of foreign bauxites are: transportation from mine to market, mineralogical and physical composition of the bauxite, thickness of the bauxite beds and their clay and forest overburden, amen- ability of the bauxite to beneficiation and to caustic extraction of the alumina, and lastly size of bauxite deposits and rate of mining employed.
