As far as the present writers know, this system of flotation has not been used elsewhere in this country, but in the last couple of years it has been introduced, with minor variations, at one plant in England and one in Wales. The system has been described and discussed in a number of publications. The following is quoted from an abstract of the latest of these," a paper presented at an International Conference on Industrial Combustion in 1952. On the basis of experience to date with the commercial plants, it is believed that the kerosene-flotation process incorporates all the necessary elements to make it greatly superior to anything else now available for treating of fines in wet processes of coal preparation. Additional study and investigation are still needed, however, to determine if certain phases of the process can be improved to such an extent as to make it generally satisfactory and acceptable to the industry. Further improvements will be needed with respect to the capacities of the flotation cells and the reagent consumption.

UehliNg, New York City (communication to the Secretary*):—In adding my mite to the discussion, I wish to touch on a few points which bear emphasizing and perhaps a little further elucidation. Mr. Grammer says that he "found the electric pig-breaker at Duquesne, if used in connection with the iron-chill, less expensive and more satisfactory " thau the casting-machine. The cost of handling the iron over the Duquesne casting-niachine is about double the average cost of the other Uehling machines at the several Carnegie plants. It is nearly as expensive to run as the Hey1 & Patterson machines, and while Mr. Grammer's statement is, no doubt, true, as applied to that particular machine and breaker, it should be borne in mind that the machine at Duquesne had embodied in it several new features, which were not improvements; also that it was taxed beyond its economic capacity. THIS essay is an attempt to present the elementary facts and ideas concerning the growth of crystals, especially of metals. Freezing, like all heterogeneous processes, is a process of nucleation and growth; it manifests itself in metallurgy primarily in the freezing of ingots. The preceding paper in this volume discusses nucleation; the paper to follow describes ingot solidification. The present paper will treat of the growth of nuclei to large crystals, embracing a long series of phenomena, many of which are familiar to metallurgists.† Crystal growth, it will be immediately noted, occurs not only in the freezing of metals, but in the freezing of all substances; and it is a prominent and familiar phenomenon in crystallization from solutions, aqueous or otherwise, and in crystallization from the vapor phase. It will be necessary to include such systems in this discussion, for so much of value to metallurgists has been learned from their study. Apart from this, so far as metals are concerned, it will be simpler to limit the discussion to the freezing of pure metals and of solid solutions. Other types of freezing-eutectic, peritectic, etc.-will be excluded, though they have much of interest and of importance. BASIC MECHANISM OF FREEZING Ideally, nucleation and growth processes can best be considered from the point of view of isothermal reaction and upon the assumption of random nucleation. In. such an ideal case, nuclei form at random, and at a characteristic rate either constant or changing with time, and grow to spherulites at a characteristic rate, constant or changing with time, Fig. I.. On the simplest assumption, the reaction rate-in this case the rate of freezing-is a resultant of these two component rates. The reaction rate equation may be written in terms of these two component rates. The formation of pearlite from austenite closely approaches this ideal case. The ideal case forms a very useful point of departure in considering real cases. Various factors of reality produce deviations from this assumed ideality. In freezing, the isotropic medium, the melt, passes to the anisotropic solid, the crystal. Crystals are lattices of atoms, and the unit cell is often referred to as a crystal unit. Rosenhain, many years ago, represented the nucleation and growth process on freezing in the manner shown in Fig. 2, feeling, intuitively, that there must be some crystal unit in crystal growth. It now appears that this may be true, though his picture requires much elaboration. The greatest deviation from ideality lies in the nonisothermal nature of the freezing process in metals. To approach this properly it should be recalled that many nonmetallic substances freeze slowly. THE mines are near the town of Gilmore, in the Texas mining district. This district was organized in 1880. The present producing mines are near the terminus of the Gilmore & Pittsburg railroad. This railroad connects with the main line of the Oregon Short Line at Armstead, Mont. The distance from Gilmore to Armstead is 70 miles. The town of Gilmore is near the head of the Lemhi river at an elevation of 7,000 ft., while the mines are from 400 to 1,300 ft. higher. The range of mountains upon which the mines are situated forms the water shed for the Little Lost river on the west and the, Lemhi river on the east. The winters are severe and the snow fall is heavy, but the mines ship right through the year. There is an abundance of timber suitable for all mining purposes in the immediate vicinity. Water is piped into the camp from a lake about 2.5 miles distant. This lake is about 1,400 ft. above the town of Gilmore. The water is exceptionally good for boiler and domestic purposes. The mining companies now producing are. the Pittsburg Idaho Co., Ltd. ; the Latest Out Mining & Smelting Co:, Ltd. ; and the Gilmore Mining Co., Ltd. Besides the above properties, there are a number .of prospects in different stages of development. The producing mines of the district are fissures in limestone, with a general northeast-southwest course .and a dip to the west of from 40° to 70°. These fissures are at about right angles to the bedding of the limestones. The veins are regular and the ore shoots strong, both laterally and in depth, so far as developed. The ore shoots have a rake or pitch to the south. The character of the formation is shown in Fig. 1, a section of the Latest Out mine.

A BLAST can be "full of sound and fury," signifying nothing but a poorly confined charge, or it can be a muffled, well controlled explosion which moves the rock efficiently and places it in the desired location with the least amount of fuss and bother. Why one method will do the job and another proves to be almost useless is shown by the machine-gun camera studies of quarry blasting made by the Atlas Powder Co. staff. The sequence, or machine-gun, camera is the latest scientific device for the study of cause and effect factors in blasting. Movie cameras, previously used, although of some use, were limited because slow shutter speeds and small negatives failed to give clear, sharp prints. During World War II, the AAF developed the sequence camera, which figuratively stops the blast at regular intervals, making study and evaluation feasible. The camera is simple and inexpensive and offers material for accurate examination of blasting techniques. The machine-gun camera takes three 5x5 in. exposures per sec at a 1/450 sec shutter speed, four times faster than a movie camera. Negatives are 30 times larger than those of movie cameras, giving large, sharp prints. The rock movement is frozen on the picture as the sequence of the blast takes place. Pictures on this page show the advantage of individual machine gun photographs. But the sequences made possible by this camera give graphic, dramatic and conclusive support to recently developed detonation theories.

It is common knowledge that the iron orebodies of the Mesabi Range lie nearly horizontal and are of trough or blanketlike types. These orebodies are from a few feet to several hundred feet thick and vary from a few acres in extent to the size of the largest one, at Hibbing, Minn., which is over 1 mile wide and 3 miles long. They are covered with sand, boulder and clay overburden and occasionally shallow depths of ledge material, varying in total depth from about 20 to 200 ft. Large areas are not capped with overlying ledge material; the top of the ore lies directly underneath the surface material. Because of the comparatively great tonnage of ore, open-pit mining has made tremendous strides since the first open-pit ore was shipped from this range by the Merritt brothers, from the Mountain iron mine in October, 1892, and along with the great development of open-pit mining on the Mesabi Range has gone a tremendous change in the character of. equipment used. Early Stripping Operations The first stripping at the Burt mine at Hibbing, Minn., started in 1902. The engineers spent a long time in selecting the most suitable location for a small pit area, involving a stripping contract of 350,000 cu. yd. This property afterwards had several million yards of stripping and several million tons of ore removed from it, but inasmuch as it was the first open pit of the Oliver Iron Mining Co. in this district it was necessary to try several different locations for the small pit area, to uncover maximum tonnage and the best grade of ore so as to sell the idea of open-pit mining and discontinue the underground operation then going on. The writer's first open-pit work on the Mesabi Range was in 1903 as an Oliver company mining engineer on a stripping job of 1,500,000 cu. yd. at the Monroe mine, Chisholm, Minn. Here the contractor, an old-timer used to railroad methods, was, to a small extent, using teams of horses hitched to 2-yd. narrow-gage cars and hauling the stripping material from the pit area to outside of the pit limits. RAPID progress has been made in the automatic control of open-hearth furnaces in the past few years and many firms today\supply such control apparatus. It is somewhat surprising that so little was heard about open-hearth control up to about, 1928, and that thereafter the practice of automatically controlling open-hearth furnaces spread very rapidly. Before discussing the reasons for this it may be advisable to list the quantities that can be controlled. One of the easiest quantities to be controlled in the open-hearth furnace is pressure. The reasons for controlling it are plain. If there is excess pressure in the furnace, products of combustion leak out around .the .door and through all the cracks in the brick-work. The stability of the piers between the doors is seriously endangered, and front wall repairs become frequent. Furthermore, hot gases are lost that might be usefully employed in heating the checkerwork. If there is a slight vacuum in the furnace, cold air entering through the doors and cracks cools the interior, slowing down the reactions and making it impossible to secure the highest degree of preheat from the checkerwork.

Mining men, quite as exploration minded as petroleum interests, are in the position where most of the exposed crustal portions of the earth have been examined, where the demand for metals is high and likely to continue so, and yet where, perhaps, the tools fail for the economic exploration of many of the possible mineral areas more deeply covered with drift, alluvium, and later formations. At the same time the incentive exists to create acceptable substitutes for many of the duties of metal. The problem of the economic exploration of possible mineral-bearing areas is hence a vital one. In oil exploration, the absence of surface or shallow occurrences and the high cost of test drilling has led to the intensive study of geophysical techniques. Hence the development of the seismic method with its high certainty factor and its adaptability to standardized procedure.

While investigating on the aerodynamic resistance of airways supported with peripheral timber sets, at regular intervals, the following theoretical equations were developed by the author to estimate the resistance coefficient of such airways: [ ] for S < 1, where f is Darcy-Weisbach resistance coefficient of the airway, C is modified drag coefficient of the supporting member, D is equivalent diameter of the bare airway, 8 is ratio of the approach velocity over the sets to the average velocity of the bare airway, A is cross-sectional area of the bare airway, a is projected frontal area of the sets, A., is cross-sectional area of the air stream at the vena contracta inside the set, S is spacing of the sets, f, is resistance coefficient of the bare airway, l is length of aerodynamic influence of sets, p is perimeter of the bare airway, p, is setted portion of the perimeter of the bare airway, pe is unsetted portion of the perimeter of the bare airway, and P shielding factor. The equations were verified experimentally in a model rectangular airway supported with one- (bars), three-, and four-piece sets of square-section timber of three different sizes and were found to hold true. The work has been further extended to one-, three-, and four-piece sets of round timber of 2.6, 3.2, and 3.8 cm diam with the same experimental set up. Tests have been carried out for spacings of 25, 50, 75, 100, 150, and 200 cm over a regime of flow defined by the Reynolds number (with respect to the equivalent diameter of the bare duct) ranging from about 1.5 X 106 to 5 X 106 using the same experimental techniques. The values of f are calculated in the manner indicated in [Ref. 1]. Unlike with square-section timber, the resistance coefficient f of the airway setted with round timber shows a distinct variation with the Reynolds number of flow. This conforms to observations made by Sales and Hinsley.2 In order to have a comparable value of f for all types of sets with all sizes of timber, it was necessary to select the value of f at a fixed Reynolds number of flow. Since f is chiefly a function of the drag coefficient of the sets, the appropriate Reynolds number RE is that with respect to the diameter of timber in the set. Considering the diameters of timber used and the regime of flow over which measurements were made, f was chosen at a value of RE = 20,000 in all cases. The f vs. S curves are maximal in nature and in conformity with theory, the f vs. 1/S curves are straight lines up to a value of S = 1 beyond which they show a distinct flexure. The observed values of 1, the length of aerodynamic influence of sets, agree with the relation 1 = 42 e, developed for square-section timber sets, thus suggesting that the shape of timber has little influence on the length of aerodynamic influence. The value of the modified drag coefficient CD for round timber was calculated in the same way as for square timber in Ref. 1, taking the contraction factor Z = 1.5 for round-edged constrictions. CD has an average value of 0.96 with a standard deviation of 6.08% as compared to the free stream drag coefficient of 1.2 at RE = 20,000 for long cylindrical obstructions The shielding factor [ ] is plotted against S/1 in [Fig. 1]. The curves are more or less independent of the size of timber, but are different for the different types of sets, possibly due to their different degree of symmetry. Values of f calculated by the author&apos;s [Eqs. 1 and 2], using experimental values of CD&apos; and [ ] and taking I = 42 e, are plotted in [Fig. 2] against experimentally measured values of f for different types of sets with different sizes of round timber. The values agree closely with a standard deviation of only 5%, thus establishing the veracity of the theoretical equations developed by the author for round timber as well. A comparison was made between the Xenofontowa4 equations (the only other reasonable relations available for the estimation of the resistance coefficient of supported airways) and the author&apos;s [Eqs. 1 and 2] by comparing in [Fig. 3] the values of the resistance coefficient f computed by the Xenofontowa relations with those experimentally measured by the author. It has been proposed1 on the basis of slip and flow that the ideal deformation texture of drawn wire for face-centered cubic metals is a (111) direction parallel to the wire axis. Under these considerations, an intermediate [loo] texture is permissible but should eventually change to the stable [Ill] orientation. This theory does not explain why copper and its alloys containing up to about 30 pct nickel, 5 pct zinc and 1 pct aluminum were found to have a double [Ill], [100] texture, while alloys with at least 8 pct zinc and 2 pct aluminum developed essentially a single [Ill] texture.1,2 It does suggest, however, that the [loo] component of the former alloys should disappear with additional deformation.3 Some evidence exists to support this suggestion. Howald4 reported that annealed copper wire previously drawn 93.8 pct and 98.5 pct developed a single [Ill] texture. Since, in wire, the drawn and annealed textures are similar, these wires probably had a single [Ill] deformation texture before annealing. In addition, although cold rolled polycrystalline copper and 80-20 brass were found to form different types of pole figures,5,6 single crystals of these metals when rolled from the stable (110) [112] orientation were found to produce essentially the same polo figure.7.8 It may be, therefore, that while the addition of solute elements changes the path by which the final texture is obtained, the final texture is not changed. Experimental Results The wires remaining from the previous investigation1 already drawn about 50 pct reduction in diameter were further drawn to 86 pct and then to 96.4 pct total reduction in diameter. The textures were determined after these stages by transmission X ray photograms taken with a copper K-alpha beam rotated 0 degrees toward the wire axis. It was found that the ratio of the [111].] and [100] intensities of the double texture in copper and its alloys containing 0.94 pct aluminum, 30.70 pct nickel, 2.61 pct zinc and 4.99 pct zinc increased from about 3:l for the 50 pct reduction to about 9:l for the 86 pct reduction. After 96.4 pct reduction, these wires exhibited essentially a single [lll] texture. Summary Thus, the drawn wire deformation texture of copper and its alpha solid solution alloys containing aluminum, nickel or zinc is essentially a single [Ill] texture as predicted by theoretical considerations of slip and flow.&apos; For copper and its alloys containing up to about 1 pct aluminum, 5 pct zinc and at least 30 pct nickel, an intermediate [loo] component is found after about 50 pct reduction in diameter, but disappears after about 95 pct reduction in diameter. For alpha solid solution alloys containing at least about 2 pct aluminum and 8 pct zinc the single [Ill] texture is developed considerably more easily and is found after about 50 pct reduction in diameter. Economics of drifters and air-leg drills are compared, as well as costs of shrinkage and sub-level stoping. Economy of large haulage equipment and underground crushing is shown.

Beginning with a joint session on engineering research and production engineering, Tuesday afternoon, conducted by E. A. Stephenson and H. C. Fowler, problems of petroleum technology, domestic and foreign production, proved oil re- serves, economics, and stabilization were mooied almost without interruption until nearly everyone was "talked out,&apos; and the meeting was adjourned at the end of the annual Petroleum Division dinner, late Thursday night.

SINCE the publication of the paper of Mr. Scholz, The Effect of Humidity on Mine-Explosions,&apos; I have undertaken a study of the meager available data of barometric and temperature conditions it times of mine-explosions, and have arranged these data in a manner which may be of interest to other students of mine-explosions. This study covers the period from 1898 to 1909, during which an ever-increasing percentage of collieries has been ventilated by fans giving air-currents of high efficiency. Previous to 1898 this percentage was smaller than at any time since. The vari¬ous States have become, from time to time, more exacting in their demands upon poorly-ventilated mines. This general im¬provement in ventilation throughout the Appalachian field has undoubtedly brought about a condition which is annually the cause; .or a very important attendant, of the high percentage of fatalities in mine-explosions, through the daily passage of from hundreds to thousands of gallons of water, invisibly suspended in the air, carried out of the mines by the ventilating-currents during the existence of certain temperature- and humidity-conditions. There is a wide-spread opinion that these conditions exist from November 1 to March 31; but it is more likely that they have a much wider range, which varies from year to year. Certain years show an increase or decrease of rain-fall from the mean ; the daily temperature may fall far below or rise far above the mean established by a record of a period of years; and the daily humidity varies likewise. If mine-explosions are influenced by a lack of moisture in the mines, certainly it may be expected that the influence will be felt at times when the

LOW prices have made 1938 a difficult year for the zinc industry of the world. Particularly in the United States, output had to be radically curtailed to bring production into line with consumption. Despite these unfavorable conditions, some additional plant construction is contemplated. In Jugoslavia, through co-operation with the Government, Trepca Mines is lo build a zinc plant to produce 10,000 metric tons annually, the plant to be ready for operation in July, 1941). Cerro de Pasco is proceeding with its plans for an electrolytic plant in Peru. A pilot plant, to be ready next summer, is under construction. In eastern Canada an electrolytic plant is planned in Quebec to treat concentrates from Yoranda and other mines but no defi-

Eveleth Taconite Co. was chartered on July 29, 1963, and is 85% owned by Ford Motor Co. and 15% by Oglebay Norton Co. The latter also serves as managing agent. The location of the company&apos;s facilities is depicted in Fig. 1. The Thunderbird mine is located midway between the cities of Eveleth and Virginia, Minn. (Fig. 2). The Fairlane plant and General Office are located approximately 10 miles south on the St. Louis River near the community of Forbes (Figs. 3 and 4). The crude ore and the finished pellets are transported by a common carrier railroad, the Duluth, Missabe & Iron Range Railway Co. The facilities are also serviced by the Duluth, Winnipeg & Pacific Railway Co. Pellets are hauled year around by the DM&IR to its docks 60 miles south in Duluth, Minn. Ford Motor Co. consumes its share of the high grade pellets at its Rouge plant in Dearborn, Mich., and Oglebay Norton Co. sells its share in the open market. HISTORY Following six months of preliminary engineering by the initial staff of Eveleth Taconite Co. and the Western Knapp Engineering Div. of Arthur G. McKee & Co., the project was approved by Eveleth&apos;s board of directors on Apr. 17, 1964. On May 1, 1964, contracts were awarded to McKee for the mine, coarse and fine crushing and concentrating facilities, and to Allis-Chalmer for the pelletizing facilities. Much has been written and said concerning the alleged wasteful and uneconomic use of natural gas and petroleum. Espccially condemned has been the use of natural gas for the production of carbon black and the use of heavy fuel oil under steam boilers.&apos; The critics of these usages of gas and oil have sought to make effective their verbal attacks on the industry by the repetitive expression of the words "inferior" and "superior" uses2 of petroleum. Thus, to employ natural gas for residential heating was to use it in a superior way; to use it for the production of carbon black was to use it in a wasteful and uneconomic way. To use petroleum for the production of automotive fuel was to use it in a superior way; to employ it as a residential fuel and as the prime source of power in an industrial plant was to use it in an inferior and uneconomic way. No doubt the objections to such employment of gaseous and liquid natural hydrocarbons originated in the belief that natural gas and petroleum are limited, nonregenerative mineral resources, and that the functions they perform can be just as well performed by other natural resources like coal13 of which practically unlimited reserves are known. The generations that have dominated each of the last four decades have counted reserves4 of petroleum in terms of a few years supply. Meanwhile, domestic demand for motor fuel rose spectacularly from a few million barrels in 1900 to more than 500,000,000 bbl. last year.5 The more imaginative and vocal critics drew startling word pictures of the catastrophe of 25,000,000 motor vehicles made useless and of the great automotive manufacturing and allied industries brought to an untimely end, and millions of workers left hopelessly unemployed by what they called the deplorably rapid depletion of the petroleum reserve. Many of the critics have been sincere advocates of the conservation of natural resources; many others, and in recent years probably the majority, have espoused the doctrine of conservation to promote their own self-interest rather than that of the public. The latest advocate of severe restriction in the use of petroleum for the alleged purpose of conserving the petroleum resource proposes to achieve that end by a bill,6 now before

The eastern part of the state of Rhode Island on both sides of Narragansett Bay, including the island of Rhode Island, is underlaid with carboniferous rocks which carry veins of anthracite. This formation extends into the neighboring portion of Massachusetts, including the area from the state line, the towns of Mansfield, Brockton and Bridgewater,: and extending probably ten miles east of the latter two towns, to Middlesboro, and to Fall River. In Massachusetts the coal formation extends over nearly the whole of Bristol, and parts of Plymouth and Norfolk Counties. In Rhode Island and Massachusetts the area covered is about 400 square miles. In both states the exact limits of the coal measures cannot be determined on account of a thick layer of drift which overlays it. Along parts of Narragansett Bay, the coal measures outcrop in the cliffs on the west side of Rhode Island, and the presence of coal here seems to have been noted as early as 1760, and in 1768 a patent was granted to parties who "were about to dig after pit, coal or sea coal" at the back of the town of Providence. In 1807-08 Benjamin Silliman, later a geologist, visited some openings,&apos; and in 1808 a mine was opened near Portsmouth, in the northeast part of Rhode Island. Work was done here until about 1814 when the mine was abandoned. No anthracite had been used in New England at that time, all coal used came from Nova Scotia, Virginia or England, and was high volatile bituminous; neither experience nor the means of firing favored the use of the local fuel? This mine was again working in 1827, was again abandoned and operations were resumed in 1847. In 1837 a note in a magazine mentions, "the immense coal mine in Cumberland-about six miles from the city of Providence" as having a shaft 14 ft. in diameter and 80 ft. deep, that the horses then used for hoisting the coal were to be superseded by a steam engine and another shaft was to be sunk. With these improvements 30,000 to 50,000 tons were to be produced the following year at a cost of $1 per ton and a sales realization of $6.1 Hitchcock&apos;s report refers to a number of localities in both states where definite knowledge of coal existed.
