1750 to 1850: The scene shifts westward across the Alleghenys to the young town of Pittsburgh; charcoal gives way to mineral coal as furnaces grow larger and the blast is heated; above all, Pennsylvania iron is adding strength to the new Nation and building an empire in the West. TWO names are inseparably associated with the Pittsburgh iron industry-those of George Anschutz and John Hayden. The iron ore deposits of southeastern Pennsylvania were found and developed early in the 18th century, and several forges and furnaces were built and operated. It was only after the revolution that the iron men crossed the Susquehanna River, built furnaces in the neighborhood of ore deposits of Franklin County, then along the Juniata River and its valley. Juniata Iron found a ready market in the Pittsburgh area. However, difficulty in transporting it across the Allegheny Mountains induced iron mas¬ters to seek ore and plant locations in the Pittsburgh district. One of the first to reach this area was George Anschutz, who migrated to America in 1789 at the age of 36, reaching Pittsburgh in the fall of 1790. Anschutz immediately set out to organize an iron company in Pittsburgh, and was able to interest some residents in his project. After being informed of an iron ore deposit located only three miles out of town (on the site of the present 26th St. and the Allegheny River) he decided to build there his blast furnace and foundry plant. Total cost of the installation was $300. When the furnace was put in operation, Anschutz, now known as Red George, found that the ore deposit was only an insignificant one and would last no more than a few weeks. A new deposit was found on Roaring Run, in the southeastern corner of Armstrong County. Anschutz transported some of this ore to the mouth of Two Mile Run, where it was loaded on horse wagons and transported to the furnace. World production of natural diamonds prob¬ably exceeds 50,000,000 carats a year. The Republic of Zaire is the leading producer, with an output which is primarily industrial rather than gem grade. The USSR ranks second, and the Republic of South Africa third. Diamonds are also mined in South-West Africa, Angola, Ghana, Sierra Leone, and other African coun¬tries. In the western hemisphere, Brazil and Venezuela are the principal producers (Fig. 1). A very small output of diamonds is mined today in India, which was the first source of commercial production. In the U.S., efforts at commercial diamond mining have been con¬fined to a small area near Murfreesboro, Ark. The first diamond was found in a kimberlite pipe there in 1906. Small-scale trial mining has not, however, proved economical. Since diamonds were first discovered over 2000 years ago, only about 130 tons have been mined. In order to obtain 1 g (5 carats) of diamonds, it is necessary to remove and process approximately 25 tons of rock. Recovering this small percentage involves a combination of highly developed techniques in mining, quarrying, and earth-moving, and extremely sophisticated recovery processes. End Uses Diamonds are used for two unrelated end uses; gem diamonds are jewels of great beauty while industrial diamonds are essential ma¬terials of modern industry. Although imitation stones are substituted for the gem diamond, none of these matches its properties sufficiently well to offer real competition. Synthetic indus¬trial diamonds are now of a quality that per¬mits wide substitution in the fine-grained sizes. Gem Diamonds A diamond is a natural prism. It has the ability to bounce light rays (reflection), to bend them (refraction), and to break them into all colors of the rainbow (dispersion). This ability to "modify" light gives the diamond three characteristics for providing beauty. First is brilliance, the reflection of light back to the eye. Second is fire, dispersion of light into the colors of the spectrum. Third is scintillation, the "twinkling" that occurs when the diamond is moved (Bauer, 1969). The skill of the diamond cutter is required to unlock the brilliant, fiery beauty of a gem dia¬mond (Fisher, 1966). Diamond-cutting skills have gradually developed over the centuries. The first cutters, in India, learned how to grind one rough diamond against another to remove their "skins" and to give them various shapes. This revealed some fire and beauty, but little compared to that of the diamonds that are cut today. About 1475, a Flemish cutter named Van Gerquem discovered that diamond dust on an iron wheel would polish facets on a diamond to provide more brilliance and fire. Cutters continued to experiment with facets, and shortly before 1700 a Venetian cutter named Peruzzi developed the 58-facet brilliant cut. Wildcat drilling for new supplies of gas and the expansion of previously discovered oil and gas pools were the principal petroleum activities in West Virginia .during 1942. Much of the new gas exploration is still uncompleted and still indecisive but various wildcats made substantial extensions to existing pools. Out of 53 wildcats drilled 27 resulted in commercial gas and 6 in commercial oil. Four of the oil discoveries also had commercial gas. No strictly new pools of oil or gas can safely be described as discovered but several scattered oil and gas wells previously drilled have been confirmed as the openers of definite pools; also, various completions closed wide gaps between apparent gas pools already discovered. The proved oil territory of the state was increased about 4850 acres and the proved gas territory about 51,000 acres. The new proved oil reserves should about balance withdrawals and the new gas may represent a substantial increase. Aside from the drilling in four rather lively pools, oil activity was slight because of unfavorable operating conditions and prices. Gas drilling also declined for reasons beyond the control of the operators. The account of operations, as gathered from trade journals and other reporting services, shows that 797 new wells were drilled, providing 119 new oil wells with 2762 bbl. of daily new production; 536 new gas wells with 1,228,501,000 CU. ft. of daily open flow: and 142 dry holes. Also... 76 old wells were drilled to deeper sands, with 71 bbl. and 26,034,000 cu, ft. of added production. On the new wells the oil average was 23.21 bbl. per well per day; and the gas average was 2,270,406 CU. ft. per well per day. On new wells the ratio of dry holes to completions was 17.82 per cent. On deeper drilling the ratio of failures was 21.05 per cent. Production of oil for the year was estimated by the Oil ad Gas Journal as 3,492,000 bbl., as compared with 3,378,000 bbl. in 1941. Production of natural gas for the year is estimated by the author as 220,000,000,000 cu. ft., as compared with the U. S. Bureau of Mines final figures of 207,000,000,000 cu. ft.* in 1941. The copper industry in the Province of Katanga, in the Belgian Congo, which is now controlled and operated by the Union Minére du Haut Katanga, had its inception many years ago in the vision of a Scotsman, Robert Williams, now Sir Robert Williams, Baronet. He it was who personally negotiated the mineral concession with King Leopold of Belgium, sent in the prospecting parties who located most of the present mines of the company, later arranged for the Belgian participation from which the present company was formed, and has been its active mentor ever since. The idea back of his efforts was the establishment of an industry on the Congo-Zambezi divide, of sufficient importance to draw up to it the head of the Cape to Cairo Railroad, the dream of Sir Cecil Rhodes, and the consummation of which he had left as a legacy to Mr. Williams, his successor. The reports of the prospecting expeditions showed that copper in profitable quantity was there, but many difficulties lay in the way of the establishment of the infant industry. The isolated location of the mines, various tribal wars, the Boer War, and many other factors contributed to making progress very slow. However, in spite of these difficulties the railroad was finally built and a blast-furnace plant erected at Lubumbashi, near Elisabethville, the capital of the Province. Operations of this plant were started in 1911, treating high-grade oxidized ores and producing pig copper by a reducing smelting. Production has been continuous since that time and the company has grown so that at present it ranks as the largest individual copper producer in the industry. It is a fitting monument to the foresight, optimism and driving force of its founder, and the progressive policies of his Belgian colleagues. In January, 1914, the Union Miniere du Haut Katanga engaged as its consulting engineer, Archer E. Wheeler, metallurgical engineer, at that time general superintendent of the Great Falls plant of the Anaconda Copper Mining Co. Mr. Wheeler was commissioned by the Board of Directors to proceed into Katanga, and make all necessary investigations to enable him to report on a comprehensive development program, and to recommend a scheme of treatment particularly for their low grade

A study of the effect upon oil recovery from an un-consolidated porous medium of chromatographic transport of selected reverse-wetting additives during water displacement is described. Flow tests were performed on hydrocarbon oil-saturated sand columns (containing connate water) into which small volumes of short-chain aliphatic amine solutions were introduced during water flooding. Concurrently, meusurements of oil-silica contact angles, oil-water interfacial tensions and oil-water distribution coefficients were measured us a function of additive concentration. Certain treatments were found to cause a slight reduction in oil recovery, while others produced a significant increase (up to 50 per cent of the normtzl irreducible rninimum oil saturation). Recovery eficiency was correlated most satisfactorily with the maximum degree of reverse wetting produced during additive transport; conditions which resulted in only mild oil wettability of the sand reduced recovery, while those favoring strong oil wetting increased recovery. A mechanism of reverse-wetting additive action during chromatographic transport is developed which ascribes the results to transient changes in oil-solid contact angle during flow, with consequent release of oil trapped by capillary forces. Implications of these observations with regard to improved waterflood efficiencies are discussed. INTRODUCTION The need for finding improved methods of oil production is amply illustrated by the large volume of oil considered economically unrecoverable by existing production practice. Water flooding has long been an excellent method of secondary recovery. However, even in those areas of a formation which are well swept by a water flood, 20 per cent or more of the oil remains trapped within the formation and is not recovered. This trapping of oil within the pores of the rock structure results primarily from interfacial forces. If these interfacial forces were altered, it is possible that the trapped oil could be released and recovered. The addition of surface-active agents to a water flood to alter the interfacial properties of the oil-water-solid system has received considerable attention as a method of increasing oil recovery. Studies of surfactant treatment have yielded varied and, in some cases, apparently conflicting results. Increased oil recovery using surface-active agents has been reported by a number of investigators. Others have found that use of surfactants in a water flood either has no effect upon oil recovery or decreases it. Since surface-active agents tend to alter the formation wettability and oil-water interfacial tension simultaneously, several investigators have tried to determine the role these two factors play in oil recovery. Data have been presented which indicate that the most desirable condition for the solid surface is strongly water-wet. Other results indicate that, although breakthrough recovery may be less, the greatest ultimate recovery is obtained when neutral wettability prevails.", " The desirability of low interfacial tension seems to depend upon the wettability of the formation. Reports of higher recoveries, when the interfacial tension is high in a water-wet system and low in an oil-wet system, are at odds with reports of increased recovery in water-wet systems when surfactants which decrease the interfacial tension are added to the water flood. A review of previous work studying the effects of using surface-active agents in a water flood shows that these agents produce widely different effects and that opinions as to the role of the various interfacial properties are diverse. The consensus, however, is that the interfacial properties are quite important in the displacement of oil from a porous medium by water. Even in those investigations where appreciable increases in oil recovery resulted from treatment with a surface-active agent, economic considerations generally made practical application of the treatment unattractive because surfactants tend to be adsorbed within the formation. This adsorption would necessitate using large quantities of surfactant if all of the flood water were treated to contain a given surfactant concentration, even if this concentration were quite low. Preston and Calhoun suggested that the principles of chromatography could be applied to the use of surface-active agents as a means of increasing oil recovery. For more than 100 years, the Republic of Chile has been one of the leading copper-producing countries of the world. Between 1877 and 1880 Chile accounted for over 50 pet of total world copper production. Today it has the world's largest known reserves of copper ore and a capability of producing over 600,000 tons per year. This capacity can and will be increased as the world demand for copper grows steadily during the remaining years of this century. The Potrerillos mine of Andes Copper Mining Co., a subsidiary of The Anaconda Co., was developed in the rugged, high Cordilleras in the early 1920's, and the townsite, concentrator, leaching plants, smelter, railroad, power and port facilities were completed so that it came into full production in 1927. Since then and until the closing o f the mine in June of last year, 1,762,192 tons o f copper were produced.

SEVERAL years ago my firm was representing the Mt. Lyell Co. of Australia, which was shipping its blister copper to a refining works in the United States. After the contract had been running for many months, the superintendent of these works discovered that if water was poured upon the surface of the bars much of it would disappear into the interior through blow holes. -Some experiments made by him showed that this could be a considerable amount, so that copper which had been rained on before it was weighed, although the surface appeared dry, nevertheless would contain water. It had frequently occurred in our experience-as samp-lers that the drillings from a lot taken by boring would come out quite wet, and in some cases, indeed, water would drip into the sample pan placed below the bars, due to the fact that the drill had penetrated a cavity or cavities containing water, which presumably got into the cavities at the time the copper was water-cooled after casting, there being, perhaps, no outlet to the surface. So far as I know, until this discovery at the refining works, no. one had thought that rain could penetrate into the interior of blister copper; at least in any quantity sufficient to be considered.

SEVERAL notable studies of the effects of sub- stitutional solutes have been reported. Outstanding among these for its elucidation of general principles, is the summarized work of Hume-Rothery and coworkers.1 For a systematic study of the effects of substitutional solutes on the mechanical properties of the solvent lattice, the work of Brick, Martin, and Angier² on copper; of Frye and coworkers³,4,5 on copper and silver; and of Lacy and Gensamer6 and of Austin7 on iron may be mentioned. Titanium is one of the few elements offering the possibility of a similar study of interstitial solutes since, unlike most metallic elements, it exhibits extended solid solubility for most of the interstitial solutes—hydrogen, boron, nitrogen, oxygen, and carbon. This paper reports a survey of the effects of dilute solutions of nitrogen, oxygen, and carbon on the mechanical properties of high-purity alpha titanium. Previous Work: Van Arkel and De Boer showed" that high purity titanium was quite ductile and De Boer, Burgers and Fast established".' that not only were oxygen and nitrogen very soluble in solid titanium but that, long before the limit of solid solubility of either had been reached, these interstitial solutes rendered the metal brittle. A great deal has been written of late regarding the loss of silver in assaying; very discordant results have been published by different writers, and much uncertainty exists concerning even approximate losses in a careful determination of silver, as represented by a fire-assay. In the present paper it has been the aim of the writer to determine as accurately as possible the losses sustained by silver, under certain specified conditions, during the process of cupellation. Such losses are well known to be due to absorption by the cupel and volatilization. The conditions, however, which govern these losses are not believed by the writer to be so well understood. The most important of these are : 1. The effect of variable quantities of silver used. 2. The temperature of cupellation. 3. The character and quantity of impurities in the lead button. 4. The weight of the lead button. 5. The nature of the cupel. The following experiments were made for the purpose of demonstrating, as nearly as possible, the total loss of silver in cupellation under the most favorable conditions to be obtained in commercial assaying. Chemically pure silver and pure lead were taken. The latter was obtained from test-lead, first melted into a bar, from which pieces of the desired weight were cut and accurately weighed. The experiments recorded in this paper were planned by the writer, but executed throughout by Mr. J. N. Walker, whose ability as an accurate, careful and painstaking assayer is too well known and recognized throughout the West to require any further endorsement from me.

It is nearly three years since the metallurgy of the Homestake ore was discussed with considerable thoroughness, in a paper1 read before the Institution of .Mining and Metallurgy. Certain changes have been made in this period which are perhaps of sufficient interest to justify a brief description, and it is chiefly with such details and miscellanies that this paper will deal. In the circumstances, a certain amount of repetition is inevitable, but matter treated of in the former paper will be referred to here only when it is necessary for the sake of coherency. For full descriptions of equipment and technique, the former paper should be consulted. The mineralized slates and schists which constitute the ore vary considerably in composition, but the unoxidized ore, perhaps constituting the major part of the reserves, contains either chlorite or hornblende (cummingtonite), with quartz, carbonates of lime, magnesia and iron, and arsenopyrite, pyrite, and pyrrhotite. Ferrous minerals predominate, and this fact has been an important factor in determining the metallurgical treatment. With one or two exceptions the minerals noted are of relatively high specific gravity, and the ore as a whole is exceptionally heavy, many determinations giving an average specific gravity of 3.00. This high specific gravity presents one decided advantage, when the cost of treatment is compared with operations elsewhere, in that the ton, almost universally the basic unit, represents a volume probably less by 10 per cent. than that of many gold ores. On the other hand, this high gravity renders more difficult the discharge of pulp from mortars, its distribution on amalgam tables, and its transportation in launders. In the same way, as attesting the usual balance of such variations of different ores, it may be noted that the needle-like fibers of hornblende (cummingtonite), interlacing throughout the mass, render the ore more difficult to crush than would be anticipated, but on the other hand assist

Discussion of the paper of A. P. WATT, presented at the St. Louis meeting, October, 1917, and printed in Bulletin No. 130, October, 1917, pp. 1476 to 1563. THE CHAIRMAN (0. M. _BILHARZ, Miami, Okla.).-Mr. Watt's reference to sorting or hand-picking of the ore in the lead district, which is being introduced at Mine La Motte, is especially interesting. I believe, from my former experience in the district, that hand-picking should be practised to some extent by all the companies in the Lead Belt. I know that a great many thousand tons containing only very small amounts of lead are passed through the mills, which, of course, is not to the advantage of milling machinery. That procedure may be Warranted at times of high prices, but I think that hand-picking should ordinarily be adopted to some extent: ERNEST GAYFORD, Salt Lake City, Utah.-On page 1525, speaking of the settling of slime previous to treatment either on slime tables or by flotation, Mr. Watt states: "The settling area allowed per ton of dry slime varies from 11 to 16 sq. ft.-an average for the district would be about 13 sq. ft. of settling area per ton of dry slime. This figure applies when the, discharge contains 20 per cent. solids." Mr. Ramsey, of the Dorr company, is here and I would like to ask him whether a settling area of 13 sq. ft. per ton of dry slime per 24 hr. is not considerably above the average area of Dorr settling tanks, and whether 20 per cent. solids is not above the general dilution for that' capacity? I should also like to know what is the general average on slimes of that character. E. R. RAMSEY, Denver, Colo.-An allowance of 13 sq. ft. per ton does seem rather large. I am not familiar with the settling characteristics of the dolomitic gangue, but as an average over the country, I should say that 6 or 7 sq. ft. would be nearer correct for discharge at that consistency. DELANO, Bowie Terre, Mo.-We have had an opportunity to try our tanks at the highest capacity, and-find that by thickening the slime to 30 per cent. solids we average 12 sq. ft. per ton of dry slime. ERNEST GAYFORD.-DO you find any definite ratio between the thickness of the discharge and the settling capacity of the tank? Do you consider that the tank has a larger capacity if the discharge is 3 to 1 than if it is 50 per cent. solids? L. A. DELANO.-I think it has greater capacity with the thinner discharge. It depends a good deal on the density of feed to the tanks; in our case the feed contains 2.5 per cent. solids.

This paper addresses a process by which both the disposal and utilization of preparation plant coal refuse can be simultaneously accomplished with an attendant benefit of significantly increasing the percentage of extractable coal. A laboratory study is described in which coal refuse was successfully utilized as an aggregate in low cost concrete (coal-crete) mixes under simulated mine environments. Coal-crete specimens with compressive strengths of 14 000 kPa (2000 psd were consistently produced. A construction sequence and mining plans are offered for placing the low-cost coal-crete pillars in accessible areas in room and-pillar mines so that a substantial portion of the remaining coal pillars could be extracted. The method could be applicable in areas where mining procedures do not permit pillar extraction because of possible surface subsidence, roof problems, or other conditions. Possible structural difficulties with the coal-crete pillar support system are discussed. Using a discounted cash flow analysis, the economic feasibility of mining with the coal-crete pillar system is investigated. The cost of the system is compared to the cost of a mining system which would have less coal recovery. The analysis indicates that although at higher coal selling prices the coal-crete mining system may yield an acceptable rate of return, the alternative of leaving the coal pillars is more attractive at the present time.

THE objeet of this paper is to describe the electric equipment at the iron-ore mines of Penn Iron Mining Co., Vulcan, Mich. and of Republic Iron Co., Republic, Mich.; to give the result's of tests; and to discuss the methods in use from an operating as well as from an efficiency standpoint. Electricity was introduced at the Penn mines for pumping, hoisting, and compressing air in the spring of 1907, upon the completion of a hydro-electric plant built by that company on the Menominee river about 4 miles from the mines. This plant was described in a paper1 presented before the Lake Superior Mining Institute. A paper2 presented at a meeting of the same Institute describes some of the operating features, and the safety devices of the electric hoist at the Curry shaft were briefly described in the Proceedings of the First Co-operative Safety Congress held under the auspices of the Association of Iron and Steel Electrical Engineers at Milwaukee, Wis., Sept. 30 to Oct. 5, 1912.

THE problem of reaction rates in the open-hearth process is essentially that of trying to form a fairly clear picture of the "chemical mechanisms" in the bath. Quantitative data on reaction rates would perhaps not be of much practical importance even if they were available; however, what few approximate data there are can be used in combination with data given in Chapters 16 and 17 to sketch a picture of the "chemical mechanics" of the open-hearth process that is consistent with essentially all the present available evidence. The result may later be found incorrect in many details but even so it will illustrate certain useful methods for obtaining a clearer understanding of the process. Consistent with the treatment in Chapter 15, but in simpler terms, we may say that chemical reactions in general involve the following elements or steps : 1. The reacting molecules are mixed together in space in such fashion as to favor collisions among them. 2. Units of what is usually an intermediate molecular arrangement called an activated complex are formed at a certain rate, depending on temperature and concentrations. 3. .These activated complex units decompose into the reaction products (this step usually assumed to be so rapid as never to limit the over-all process). 4. During the past year (1967-68), there have been many instances of either partial or complete failure of a tunnel-support system. It looks like the art is in a pretty sad state, but as long as we permit the field of tunnel design to remain basically an art, that's about what we can expect. The application of scientific principles to tunnel design involves much more than assigning values to a series of factors in an equation. I am reminded of the case where the engineer calculated that steel ribs with struts were required to support a horseshoe-shaped tunnel in firm ground. The contractor had driven several hundred feet without installing the struts when the engineer visited the job. When he was informed that the struts had been left out, he fled the tunnel in alarm. As one authority has so aptly put it, "There is far too much calculating and too little observing." Initially, one might think of a tunnel support as a structural member, such as a strut or arch which is installed in order to support some definite load. Similarly, a tunnel lining might be considered as a treatment of the interior surface of the tunnel in order to produce desired aesthetic, hydraulic, or architectural results, or to serve a protective function. Actually, many linings, such as a concrete lining, serve a dual purpose and support a load as well as satisfy other requirements. Not too many years ago a tunnel, during the driving or excavating stage, was considered to be either supported or unsupported. In recent years, however, several techniques have been developed, which by helping the tunnel to support itself, permit the elimination of separate structural support. Since these techniques in many cases actually become a substitute for the conventional types of supports and linings, a state-of-the-art review would hardly be complete without including them for consideration. Thus, for the purpose of this discussion, we shall define tunnel supports as any system or technique which effectively maintains the integrity of the tunnel opening. It has been demonstrated that for fine grinding operations, the energy input (E) and the product size modulus (k) are related by an equation of the form E = Ak1-n (1) where "A " and "n" are constants.(1) Also, it was suggested that "A" is determined by the comminuting device and that "n" depends primarily on the rock. It was the purpose of this investigation to study these constants by determining the form of an energy-size reduction relationship over an extreme range of energy inputs, and at the same time, to evaluate the minimum particle size produced during grinding. The comminution system consisted of a stainless steel laboratory ball mill in which quartz was ground at 60% solids for times ranging from 1 minute to 700 hours. The mill which measured 10" diameter by 12" long was loaded with about 60 pounds of balls ranging in diameter from 3/8" to 1-1/8" and was driven at 55 r.p.m. Quartz was selected for the tests because it is a brittle material for which size distribution data were expected to show a constant distribution coefficient regardless of product size.(1) This permitted specification of product size by a size modulus alone. The quantities measured were the time of grind (measure of energy input) and the specific surfaces of the products. Since no accurate method is available yet for determining particle size directly in the very fine size ranges specific surface data were used for this purpose. The relationship between these two quantities may be expressed as where Cis a constant which includes a shape factor, p is the specific gravity of the solid,_S is the specific surface and D is an equivalent particle diameter. For a material in which the distribution coefficient does not change with size the term (l/S) may be substituted for k in equation L if the proportionality constant "A" is changed correspondingly. This substitution was made in this work but in addition, screen analyses were made on several products to verify the equivalence of the two methods of size specification. EXPERIMENTAL DETAIL QUARTZ Quartz from two sources was tested. One series of tests was made on a clear, high purity crystalline quartz from Brazil and Arkansas, and another series was run on massive quartz fromNewHampshire. Grinding charges of the high purity material consisted of 2000 gram samples of -3-8 mesh particles, while the charges of the New Hampshire quartz were 500 gram samples of a -35+48 mesh screen fraction. The difference in the sizes of these two series of charges was not significant in view of the extreme size reduction accomplished, and the New Hampshire samples were smaller to permit ginding to finer sizes in shorter times than required for 2000 gram lots. SAMPLING AND ANALYSIS Separate charges were ground for all tests in which the grinding times were less than one hour and for all tests on New Hampshire quartz since these products were difficult to sample accurately without affecting the entire charge. The chief purpose of this note is to call attention to the triaxial diagram as a convenient means of illustrating the properties of slags, and by this example of its use to commend it to those inclined to graphical studies having other possible applications. Explanation.—In the common or di-axial diagram, the properties corresponding to any point are determined by its perpendicular distance from each of two axes. For example, in an ordinary stress-strain diagram the properties of a given point in the curve are, first, a stress cd so many pounds per square inch, because its perpendicular distance from the horizontal axis of the diagram corresponds by the vertical scale to that stress; and second, a strain or elongation of so many per cent., because its perpendicular distance from the vertical axis corresponds by the horizontal scale to that elongation. SEVERAL very interesting articles have been written on the caving system of mining, but most of these papers have dealt separately with the slusher system or the chute and grizzly system. In this paper, a comparison will be made of the two methods, both of which are being used at the Climax mine. The mine is on the Continental Divide, in central Colorado, at an altitude of approximately 11,500 ft. above sea level. The long, cold winters, characteristic of the high Rockies, create a number of operating problems not usually found in other mining areas. THE ORE BODY The Climax ore body is just east of the Mosquito fault. This structural deformation has brought the granite on the east against the sedimentary rocks on the west. The ore occurs in an intensely altered granite and schist around a silicified granite core. The ore is in a highly fractured zone of moderate silicification. The principal mineral, molybdenite, is found in these fractures. Barren dikes of granite porphyry cut through the ore body and core with no apparent regularity. The grade of the ore is fairly uniform and gradually decreases toward the footwall core and also into the hanging-wall granite. The footwall and hanging wall are determined entirely by assays. The ore body is roughly dome-shaped, with the apex truncated at the surface. It is covered to varying depths with talus. A horizontal section of the ore body on the Phillipson level appears as an annular ellipse surrounding the footwall core. The ring of ore varies in width from 300 ft. to as much as 800 ft. The north-south axis of the core is about 1200 ft. and the east-west axis is about 1800 ft. In the ore zone, the rock is sufficiently strong to maintain reasonably large openings, and openings larger than haulage drifts usually have to be supported. The ore is cut by a great many fractures and shears and breaks into rather large blocks when caved, necessitating considerable secondary blasting. The waste that overlies the ore body breaks relatively fine in comparison with the size of the blocks of the caved ore and tends to run through the broken ore in the cave, causing dilution unless the draw is carefully controlled. MINING SYSTEMS For several years the ore was mined by the chute and grizzly system, a system that differs from that used in other caving mines only in the size of openings and equipment.
